SU honors service members through Veterans Day events By Justin Mattingly news editor

A

lot of the “unique” culture of Syracuse University comes from veterans and their families, Chancellor Kent Syverud said Wednesday. While introducing the keynote speaker at this year’s Veterans Day Ceremony in Hendricks Chapel, Syverud discussed SU’s work in veterans affairs and praised the veterans in attendance and all veterans for their service. “We here believe that the best way to show our thanks is to make every day Veterans Day at this uni-

versity,” he said. Syverud said all parts of the university have embraced the mission of making SU a leader in veterans affairs. Standing behind the same podium about a year and a half ago, Syverud said one of his main goals as chancellor is to make SU the best place in higher education for veterans. The chancellor spoke for about five minutes before Brig. Gen. Michael Fantini, the keynote speaker who is the principal director for Middle East policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Father, ROTC cadet daughter spend Veterans Day together By Justin Mattingly news editor

Brig. Gen. Michael Fantini smiled as his daughter walked down the aisle. Elizabeth looked ahead with a straight face — her eyes set on Chancellor Kent Sy verud and Jake VanMarter. Elizabeth stopped at the end of the aisle, delivered the U.S. flag to VanMarter, who then gave it to Syverud. Elizabeth turned and marched away — she had done her job. Now, her father was about to do his. Michael Fantini served as the keynote speaker of this year’s Vet-

erans Day Ceremony at Syracuse University. His daughter, Elizabeth, is an Air Force ROTC cadet and a sophomore psychology major at the university. On this Veterans Day, the two were able to put aside their busy schedules — one as a college student; the other working in the Pentagon — and have a day they won’t soon forget. It started before the sun rose, on the Quad in front of Hendricks Chapel. The two took part in the Veterans Day Run along with other cadets and administrators. About 10 minutes before 7 a.m., the two crossed the finish line together. see fantini page 4

A former Syracuse University student who currently lives in Syracuse was arrested and charged after posting an alarming message on Yik Yak, police said. Another SU student who was alarmed by the Yik Yak post notified the Department of Public Safety about it on Oct. 28. In order to identify the individual, DPS collaborated with other entities, including Yik Yak, according to a public safety email sent Wednesday night. The email did not specify what the former SU student who made the post was charged with. Hannah Warren, DPS’s public information officer, did not return an email asking for more information. smswann@syr.edu
