Stepping forward When Chancellor Kent Syverud came to SU, he launched Fast Forward Syracuse, a three-part initiative that will serve as a framework for administrative decisions at the university moving forward. Going into the spring semester, there will be many important decisions made relating to Fast Forward. To help you better understand the initiative, The D.O. collaborated with SU administrators to provide a breakdown of the three components and what you need to know.

ACADEMIC STRATEGIC PLAN
? ...
The Academic Strategic Plan emerged from a year-long collaborative process to refine the university’s institutional vision and mission in light of current and emerging needs and opportunities, and identify broad university-wide goals that will advance progress toward achieving that vision. SU’s Academic Strategic Plan Oversight Committee announced the appointment of faculty, staff and students to six working groups that will help inform the committee’s work to implement the university’s new Academic Strategic Plan. Each of the six working groups is charged with focusing on one of the themed areas of the plan: The Student Experience, Discovery, Internationalization, Commitment to Veterans and Military-connected Families, Innovation and One University. The working groups are prioritizing the objectives and developing clear plans of action for achieving them. This is a multi-year plan and a living document, which means that SU fully expects it to continue to evolve even as it moves more deeply into the implementation phase.
WHAT IS FAST FORWARD?
For more than a year, The Campus Framework Advisory Group, comprised of faculty, staff, students has partnered with Sasaki Associates to make the Syracuse campus — both inside and outside of the classroom — even better. Sasaki has gathered thousands of input points and developed a draft Framework Plan that was shared with the Board of Trustees at its November meeting. The draft Framework Plan is being assessed and aligned with university priorities. That process is underway and will be further explored in the coming weeks. A comprehensive update will be provided to the campus community at that time.
Fast Forward is Chancellor Kent Syverud’s three-part initiative to improve SU and focus on what the university needs to do moving forward. The plan emerged after the consulting firm Bain & Co. produced a report on how the university could improve.

Cross-functional teams, including faculty, staff, and students, continue to re-think how the university buys goods and services to fully leverage the purchasing power of “One University” while being good stewards of students’ tuition. Initiative teams are improving and refining university processes; modifying or implementing systems and communicating these changes. Identification, evaluation and selection of further opportunities for operational improvements are moving forward. Metrics and other assessments are being developed and refined to report progress on university savings.

University to expand employee health, wellness program By Ali Linan asst. copy editor
Syracuse University has partnered with Carebridge Life Resources to provide comprehensive health and wellness services — including mental health services — to all eligible employees of the university. As part of the university’s ongoing Wellness Initiative to expand the Faculty and Staff Assistance
Program, Carebridge will help SU provide 24/7 year-round health and wellness services, said Andrew Gordon, chief human resources officer at SU. The company is currently contracted for two years with potential to expand in the future. SU announced on Nov. 19 that the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, which provides counseling services confidentially like the Counseling Center, would soon be led by a third-
party organization like Carebridge. The announcement sparked concern from members of the University Senate at its Dec. 2 meeting. “It just seems quite surprising that it’s closing without any public information besides a 1-800 number telling us how the services would work,” one senator said. Carebridge will provide services during “green-days,” or days when classes are not in session. Previously,
when school was not in session, neither were the services. In addition, faculty and staff will have access to local counseling, crisis support and resources, mental health professionals with specialized training and on-demand worklife learning opportunities, according to an SU News Release. Carebridge works to bring “individuals and families a comprehensive treasury of information and
tools to make contemporary life manageable and successful,” according to its website. Calls will be answered by a “qualified and licensed clinician” who is trained to assess the situation and direct the caller to be the best answers, he added. Gordon said faculty and staff will also have access to work-life resources. This includes child and
