SU officials detail ‘benchmark’ college community investment analysis

wo high-ranking Syracuse University administrators on Wednesday provided additional clarification as to why several “benchmark” universities were cited in a report that indicates SU is reassessing community investments throughout the city.

The report, compiled by Seattle-based boutique consulting firm Enlight Advisors, was released earlier this semester. It came two weeks after Syracuse.com reported the university was pulling back financial support for the Near Westside Initiative, a project spearheaded by former Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s administration.

“To be clear, it’s not that we have made such an assessment at this point. But, it could be that there are things we have focused on, in the context of community engagement, that are misaligned with the future aspirations of the institution,” said Mike Haynie, SU’s vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation. “In those instances, it becomes an exercise in understanding if we can realign, shift that engagement and position in different ways.”

When previously asked if SU strives to be like the “benchmark” universities it compared its community investment strategies to

The five major universities listed in the report as benchmarks were: Northeastern University, Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University at St. Louis. Secondary research for the report was also conducted at: The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry; the State University of New York Upstate Medical University; Le Moyne College; the University of Rochester; the Rochester Institute of Technology; Cornell University; Vanderbilt University; and the University of Michigan.

Haynie said university administrators discussed what peer institutions or “aspirational peers” to include in the report with an Enlight consultant.

Certain universities were selected as benchmarks because they were informative of what SU wants to be, the vice chancellor said. The colleges were also roughly similar in regard to how they are resourced and organized, he said.

Pizza chain to open in student housing complex

A sign of looming change on University Hill is literally hanging over the Marshall Street area. A red crane, recently set up near South Crouse Avenue, towers above the former Hungry Chuck’s property.

The Marshall, a luxury student housing development that displaced the popular bar, is quickly going vertical. Steel beams are being placed across the construction site, which is adjacent to the Marshall Square Mall. And, as one developer confirmed, a tenant is already planning to move into the building’s first floor of commercial space.

Blaze Pizza, a fast-casual pizza chain based in California, is the

first business to announce that it will operate out of the apartment complex, which will include 278 units and is expected to be completed in fall 2018.

Jared Hutter — owner of Syracuse 727 LLC, the real estate development company spearheading The Marshall project — said Blaze Pizza initially contacted the company about space because the chain wants to expand into central New York.

“They were looking to grow, and we are excited to have them,” Hutter said. “It kind of worked out well.”

Blaze Pizza was also looking to move into an upscale location, he added.

3 Syracuse residents stabbed City police investigate fight in Acropolis Pizza

Three Syracuse residents were stabbed in Acropolis Pizza on Marshall Street early Sunday morning, police said, in a restaurant the city once threatened to shut down in 2012 unless it took steps to increase security after a Syracuse man was stabbed in the pizzeria’s doorway.

In a public safety notice sent to the Syracuse University community at about 5 a.m., the Department of Public Safety said police were searching for two suspects with knives who were last seen running north from the intersection of Marshall Street and University Avenue.

According to a Syracuse Police Department press release, one of the victims, 19, was stabbed in the neck and the other, 19, was stabbed in the abdomen and back. Neither of their injuries appear to be life threatening, said an SPD spokesman.

The third victim, 20, was also stabbed in the neck and is listed in critical but stable condition at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. The other two victims were also transported to SUNY Upstate. see stabbing page 8

Buy your friend a reusable coffee cup

Nothing says winter like a steaming hot holiday drink from Starbucks. Not only are reusable coffee cups a stylish accessory, but they can help the environment as well. Starbucks produced 4 billion cups last year, and most of them ended up in landfills, according to its 2016 Global Social Impact Performance report. Many cafes also offer discounts for customers who bring in their own reusable cups. This year, your gift could save both the environment and your friend’s wallet.

Offer to clean while conserving water Chore coupons for your parents are a classic, low-cost holiday present.

Mother of student reflects on his death On December 13, 2017, it will be 15 years since I lost my eldest son Andrew J.K. McClune when he was at Syracuse University. Andrew was a Lockerbie Scholar and was immensely proud of his achievement, as was I. He fell from the seventh floor of Sadler Residence Hall. Why or how, I will never know.

This has once again been an emotional, traumatic year for me. Chancellor Syverud and his wife Dr. Chen quite unexpectedly and very kindly invited me back to visit Syracuse University. I never thought I would ever return to the place where I lost my beautiful eldest boy. However, I now realize why Andrew loved everything about Syracuse, the opportunities the scholarship offered him and why he had so many plans for his future — probably out in the U.S. It was his adventure.

I am immensely honored that he is included in the Rose Laying Ceremony and by a paving stone in the Orange Grove. As a parent who will never come to terms with the loss but one who has — and is trying to live with it — I feel deeply proud that he is honored in this way.

I live on the hill in Lockerbie that overlooks the town, and had only just moved back to Dumfries and Galloway that spring and into my home in the March of 1988. At the Rose Laying Ceremony and Convocation of the Remembrance Scholars last month, meeting some of the families and parents of the students lost on the plane — Pan Am Flight 103 — brought back memories of that dreadful, fateful night and put my loss into perspective. The disaster in Lockerbie and terrible loss of life caused by that awful act of terrorism must never be forgotten.

It is sadly all so relevant in the world we live in today.

May I offer my thanks to Chancellor Syverud and Dr. Chen once again and my extended thanks to Doc Mason and his wife Elaine, and Melissa Chessher for all their time, kindness and consideration during my visit to the University this year.

What else can I say but LOOK BACK, ACT FORWARD.

Cut calories by having a Meatless Monday If you’ve been going overboard on the comfort food goodies, a great way to save money and your waistline this holiday season is to cut out meat. Reader urges green energy investment I understand that the Department of Public Service and the New York Independent System Operator are considering carbon pricing options for New York’s wholesale electricity markets. While this may be a step forward, it is a small step for a state that barely burns any oil or coal to generate electricity. The thing we burn most is natural gas.

Natural gas produces methane emissions, which are much

more potent than carbon dioxide emissions. To amp up the fight against climate change, New York must focus on methane emissions as well. But the state seems to be moving forward with plans to build natural gas conversion power plants, which will import gas from out of state through a labyrinth of pipelines. $1.4 million award to fund SCSD after-school programs

Several after-school programs in the Syracuse City School District were recently awarded a total of $1.4 million in state funds to develop and expand programs and workforce skill training.

The funding, awarded by New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will also be provided to other city organizations, such as the YMCA of Greater Syracuse and the Westcott Community Center.

Stacey Stassi, program coordinator for the SCSD, said the funding will be distributed among four schools: Clary Middle School, Delaware Primary, LeMoyne Elementary and Salem Hyde Elementary.

Stassi added that the funding will be used to expand previously established after-school programs, primarily by increasing staff capacities. from page 3

benchmarks regional economic impacts, detailing local investments like SU. For example, Washington University at St. Louis estimated that in fiscal year 2016, the university supported more than 43,000 jobs throughout the St. Louis area.

UPenn, meanwhile, contributed $10.8 billion to Philadelphia’s economy in fiscal year 2015, according to a report by consulting firm Econsult Solutions, Inc. Northeastern plans to spend more than $100 million to help Boston renovate and maintain a city playground.

SU, under Cantor’s leadership, pumped millions of dollars into big community projects such as the Connective Corridor and Near Westside Initiative.

In a separate economic analysis report recently prepared for SU, an Idaho-based consultant called Emsi estimated that the university had a $1.1 billion economic impact on

“We don’t pay any full-time staff,” Stassi said of the current after-school program model. “It’s all part-time staff since it’s after school hours.”

She said the extra staffing will help bring the student-to-teacher ratio down from 15:1 to 10:1. Low teacher-to-student ratios are key to student development, she said.

With the new funding, Stassi said she hopes to expand the current Monday through Thursday after-school program to Fridays.

The funding will specifically benefit lowincome and minority students by providing dinner, academic support and a safe place for students as part of an anti-bullying initiative included as part of the grant, Stassi said.

“Without a safe place to be, they would be missing out on a big opportunity,” Stassi said.

“Without this funding, we would not be able to have these programs.”

The grant will allow the programs to offer more “enrichment opportunities” such as chess, yoga and theater, she said. The program will also offer students opportunities to learn more workforce skills.

The money will be used to expand current programs at the YMCA of Greater Syracuse, said Stefanie Noble, the organization’s director of communications.

Noble said the YMCA usually relies on charitable donations to make sure its programs keep functioning.

“The schools that we work with are our partners, and we couldn’t do these programs without them,” Noble said.

Joan Royle, executive director of the Westcott Community Center, said in an email the school district contracts the community center to provide additional services to schools such

as Edward Smith K-8 and Webster Elementary.

“We are happy to work with the district and enjoy a strong partnership with them,” she said.

Royle added that the community center also offers programs at its facility on Euclid Avenue for students ages eight to 14.

Quality after-school programs have an investment rate of return of $3 for every $1 spent, according to Cuomo’s press release.

After-school programs help students develop social skills and lead to better behavior in the school environment, according to the release.

“We value our after-school programs greatly,” Stassi said. “So the additional funding is needed so immensely. If there are any other opportunities to apply to expand these programs and serve more students, we will take it.”

the surrounding central New York region, the equivalent of supporting 15,481 jobs.

A key takeaway for administrators, after analyzing the benchmarks, is that there’s no “one size fits all solution for how to do this well,” Haynie said. Each university has to take into consideration the very specific conditions of surrounding areas when determining community investment strategy, both González and Haynie said.

“If we just look at our statistics in this region, all of our efforts haven’t helped alleviate some major issues in this community,” González said. Syracuse, according to a 2015 report by a think tank, has the most concentrated minority poverty out of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the country. About 41,710 people in the city lived below the federal poverty line in 2016, according to United States Census Bureau estimates.

González has previously said she wants SU to help better address multigenerational poverty in Syracuse. On Wednesday, she said

the university is having “conversations” with the South Side Innovation Center and equity unit of CenterState CEO about expanding the “entrepreneurial fabric” on the South Side, a traditionally low-income community southwest of Main Campus.

But in early October, Syracuse.com reported that SU was pulling back its financial support for the Near Westside Initiative, a 2006 project launched under Cantor’s “Scholarship in Action” philosophy in hopes of revitalizing one of the city’s lowest-income communities. In an October interview, González said SU’s committment to the Near Westside neighborhood is not over, “it’s just different.”

“I also want a better understanding of expectations,” González said on Wednesday.

“I think if we’d had some of those conversations, and those things documented, we might not have found ourselves in this situation of being seen as withdrawing from an organization, or an investment, or a community, when

… from the onset ... sustainability was a value and an expectation.”

Listed in Enlight’s report are four “important” differences between the university’s community investments strategy and the benchmarks’. In the list, Enlight notes that unlike SU, the benchmarks “do not consider access scholarships to be part of their community investment efforts.” According to Emsi’s economic analysis, SU invests $20.7 million annually in regional access scholarships for more than 800 “underserved and talented students” in central New York.

When asked if the benchmark findings will influence SU to change how it handles access scholarships, Haynie said all he wants to do is “celebrate” access programs including Syracuse Say Yes to Education, which provides financial aid to lower-income students living in the area.

“I think we should continue to give kids a chance,” he said.

stabbing An SU spokeswoman on Sunday confirmed that no students were involved in the reported stabbing incident “nor was anyone involved affiliated with SU.” Steven Papazides, who manages Acropolis but was not present at the incident, said there was a pool of blood on the Marshall Street sidewalk in front of the store. It was cleaned up by 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

All victims had addresses listed in the city, Helterline said in a follow-up email.

The stabbing occurred at about 2:30 a.m.

Sunday morning in Acropolis, according to a first public safety notice sent in a campuswide email just before 3 a.m.

Crimes have repeatedly occurred over the years just outside or near the pizzeria. In September 2015, four people not affiliated with SU were stabbed during a fight outside Acropolis. In September 2012, a Syracuse man not affiliated with SU was stabbed in the business’s doorway.

Following the 2012 stabbing, then-SPD Sgt. Tom Connellan said in an email to The Daily Orange that Acropolis had “been a focal point for late night problems over the last several months.” In response to the 2012 stabbing, DPS and SU’s Student Association sent an email to students suggesting they not go to Acropolis late at night. Dellas said he sees Varsity and Blaze Pizza working together. A new pizza place will help expand the food options in the area, he added.

“The area is changing, and we are getting more diversified, we’re growing, more people are living in the area, bringing the students to the Crouse Marshall area,” Dellas said.

Hutter, a Syracuse University alumnus, said he wants to improve the dining options on Marshall Street based off his own experience

when he attended SU 15 years ago.

“My opinions are that there is nothing good beyond Varsity and Faegan’s. I don’t think anything is good right there,” Hutter said.

Some other managers who own businesses near the project site had varying opinions about Blaze Pizza. Erin Southworth, assistant manager of 3fifteen, a thrift shop in the Marshall Square Mall, said she did not hear much about the project until reading about it in the news. Pizza House, said he’s seen many local businesses come and go on the Hill.

Blaze Pizza is the only confirmed tenant in the new retail complex, Hutter said. He added that he is trying to contract retailers that will be in high-demand.

transition Association, where Simpson was previously the president and CEO, and the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce. Walsh started his career at the Metropolitan Development Association shortly after graduating from SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

According to New York Board of Elections campaign financial disclosures, Simpson donated $5,563 to Walsh’s mayoral campaign.

David Van Slyke, dean of Syracuse University’s Maxwell School

Van Slyke, dean of the Maxwell School, will work on the City Finances team.

He also serves as SU’s Louis A. Bantle Chair of Business and Government Policy.

His focus areas include public-private partnerships, government contracting, policy implementation and public and nonprofit management, according to his faculty webpage.

While the mayor-elect was enrolled as an SU master’s student, Van Slyke was working as a professor, said Walsh spokeswoman Stephanie Crockett, in an email. Van Slyke has worked with several federal government and international agencies including the United States Coast Guard, Office of Management and Budget and the World Bank.

In 2010, Van Slyke was also elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, a nonprofit that focuses on government and public administration trends.

Kimberly Boynton, president and chief executive officer of Crouse Health

Boynton will also serve on Walsh’s City Finances team along with Van Slyke. Boynton, a Syracuse native, has served on the boards of several organizations, such as United Way of Central New York and the American Red Cross. She worked as the chief financial officer of Crouse Hospital for 11 years before assuming the role of chief

executive officer in 2014.

Boynton is also the chair of the University Hill Corporation, a 501(c)(3) that aims to promote growth through development and cooperative projects, according to its website.

Chancellor Kent Syverud serves as a vice chair of University Hill Corporation.

Prior to joining Crouse Health as a financial analyst in 1998, Boynton worked at Coopers & Lybrand, which eventually merged with Price Waterhouse to form PricewaterhouseCoopers, a multinational professional services network.

Sharon Owens, chief executive officer of Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility

Owens will serve as one of the three co-chairs of the transition team. An SU graduate, Owens has held several positions at nonprofits in the area. She was also recently appointed deputy mayor by Walsh.

She’s planning to leave her current role as CEO of Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility, a nonprofit that runs the Southwest Community Center and provides educational, and recreational support to area residents.

She previously served as deputy commissioner of the department of neighborhoods and business development. Walsh served as the other deputy commissioner at the time.

Syracuse.com reported in late October that Paul Driscoll, the current commissioner of the department, lashed out at Owens over Facebook for supporting Walsh.

Howie Hawkins, Green Party candidate from the 2017 mayoral race

Hawkins ran against Walsh during the mayoral race as a Green Party candidate. Hawkins has run for public office 20 times for positions including governor, senator, city councilor and mayor. In the election, he garnered about 4 percent of the total electorate — 970 votes.

Hawkins will serve on Walsh’s City Finances team as well.

Hawkins currently works at UPS unloading trucks and is on the Eat to Live Food

Cooperative’s board. He’s also treasurer of the Southside Community Coalition, an organization that aims to revitalize the South Side neighborhood.

A major aspect of Hawkins’ mayoral platform was aiming to improve the city’s finances by implementing a city income tax to generate more revenue.

Linda LeMura, president of Le Moyne College

Linda LeMura is currently the president of Le Moyne College. Prior to her appointment

in 2014, she served as the school’s provost and vice president of academic affairs. She also worked at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania for 11 years before moving to Le Moyne.

LeMura serves on the board of the Syracuse Symphony, Everson Museum of Art and the Syracuse International Film Festival. She served on the transition team for U.S. Congressman Dan Maffei. Stranded Syracuse University student returns to campus

While browsing online this past summer, Jezrel Sabaduquia saw an advertisement on the computer screen in front of him. “$385 to Bali,” the ad read.

The rising Syracuse University junior took a gap year before college, visiting 11 countries and crisscrossing the globe. When he saw the ad, he had it all worked out: take advantage of the bargain during Thanksgiving break, spend the layover in Shanghai and arrive back to campus before classes resumed after the holiday. Sabaduquia and his friend enjoyed a week on the island of Bali, located near Australia.

“Then, on our last day, that’s when everything started to fall apart,” he said.

The Bali volcano eruption in late November stranded thousands of travelers, including Sabaduquia and a friend from high school, Christopher Sperrazza, who does not attend SU. Sabaduquia, an information and technology major, did not get back to campus until Dec. 2.

Beginning on Sunday, Nov. 26, Bali’s airport started to postpone flights because tremors radiated outward from the volcano, an indication of danger that could be potentially increasing, according to The New York Times.

On Nov. 27, the Bali government raised the volcano alert to the highest level and expanded the evacuation zone around Mount Agung to a 6-mile radius. More than 400 flights were canceled and about 60,000 passengers were affected, per The New York Times.

Sabaduquia hoped to depart at 1:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27. Instead, he and Sperrazza weathered a seven-hour delay, flight cancellation, 12-hour cab ride, a full day without food and two connecting flights

before finally arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Dec. 1. Sabaduquia said the journey spanned about 140 hours.

“It felt like we were in a hole of hopelessness and uncertainty,” Sperrazza said in a text message. “We would sit in our hotel rooms unsure of when we were going to get home.”

The first flight was scheduled to take off from Denpasar International Airport, Bali’s main airport, at 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 27. A self proclaimed “aviation geek,” Sabaduquia — who has Delta, United and Boeing stickers on his MacBook Air — monitored the volcano conditions and tracked his China Eastern Airlines flight throughout the afternoon. He tried to switch to an earlier flight, but couldn’t.

The original flight to Shanghai, which would connect him to the Kennedy Airport, was delayed seven hours, until 8:30 a.m.

The airline provided them a hotel room.

By 5 a.m., they were back in the airport to check in and pass security and immigration checkpoints. They ate breakfast, sat at the gate and relaxed.

“It was like ‘Yes, we’re finally going home,’” Sabaduquia said.

But at 8 a.m., an airport employee announced that all flights were canceled and the airport had to shut down due to the volcano’s tremors.

“I’m usually such a calm person,” Sabaduquia said. “But I started tearing up and called my mom. I was like, ‘We don’t know when we’re coming home.’”

The airline provided Sabaduquia and Sperrazza another hotel room. They watched the news and learned a volcano explosion was imminent. The wind was blowing from the volcano toward the airport, Sabaduquia said. They figured they could not stay any longer.

The next morning, Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 4:30 a.m., they took a taxi from Denpasar to

Surabaya Juanda International Airport. The ride lasted about 12 hours.

“A few days ago we were sitting on the beach,” Sabaduquia said. “And now we were pretty much in survival mode trying to get the hell out of Bali.”

Sabaduquia said he teared up.

“We were very helpless,” Sabaduquia said.

They arrived in Surabaya at about 4 p.m. on Nov. 28. They enjoyed a hamburger and steak, their first meal in 24 hours. They took showers and watched Netflix. From their hotel, located near the airport, they could see planes taking off and landing.

Their flight was delayed 90 minutes because of a cyclone, but they eventually boarded and made a connection to the Kennedy Airport from an airport in Jakarta. They bought $8 Budweiser beers to celebrate.

“I felt my peak happiness when we were at the airport waiting for our flight to New York City,” Sabaduquia said.

Sabaduquia said he felt indifferent when they landed at the Kennedy Airport on Nov. 30. He was still processing what happened. It had been almost 140 hours of travel.

He slept all day at his home in Queens because he “was literally knocked out.”

Sabaduquia emailed professors, who gave him extensions on his assignments. On Dec. 2, he flew from the Kennedy Airport to Syracuse Hancock International Airport. He reached his Ernie Davis Hall dorm room at about 1 p.m. Over the course of six days, he had circumnavigated the globe.

“It was just a long, insane ride,” Sabaduquia said.

Norcross said the store selects beers by what is available geographically and what the customers look for.

This is the 28th year Lights on the Lake has brightened up the holiday season in central New York. The 2-mile drive-through light show features holiday scenes and movieinspired light displays, including a Land of Oz, a Twinkling Fantasy Forest and a Fairytale Magic grand finale. Beaver Lake Nature Center features 9 miles of trails, which are home to more than 200 species of birds and 800 types of plants. The center also offers more than 400 learning and exploration programs each year, including several that are seasonal, according to its website.

The center hosts a variety of events in the winter, including winter trails, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, according to the website. The center also offers a program for visitors to learn about animals’ tracks and the territorial signs they leave behind.

Beaver Lake also offers guided snowshoe hikes for beginners on weekends. Participants can rent snowshoes for $5 at the nature center.

Rentals are available from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and snowshoes must be returned by 4 p.m.

Visitors can also participate in guided walks on the weekend every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. A “Night Tree” event will be held this weekend, where a special story will be read before the hike.

The nature center also offers guided moonlight snowshoeing for visitors to enjoy nature at night. In January and February, there are events like midnight skiing and snowshoeing, and also “The Shimmering Winter Sky” event. This event offers stargazing for people who want to learn more about constellations and major stars.

Beaver Lake Nature Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The visitor center opens at 8 a.m.

nature Baltimore Woods Nature Center 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is located on 182 acres of land in Marcellus and has been part of the community since 1966. Visitors can go for hikes on the trails and participate in on-site nature day camps, public programs and fundraising events.

The center offers winter activities including caroling in the woods, hiking, snowshoeing and fire building. The center’s trails are open every day of the year, and there are no admission or parking fees, said Stacy Drake, the center’s marketer.

The center will host a “Star Party” on Thursday so visitors can watch the Geminid meteor shower. The meteors are caused by asteroid Phaethon 3200, and the display starts much earlier than other showers, according to the center’s website. The all-ages event costs $6 for members of the nature center and $9 for nonmembers.

Baltimore Woods will host a Solstice Hike on Dec. 21 from 7-8:30 p.m., during which visitors can take a lantern-lit hike through the woods to experience the longest night of the year. The event is for ages 8 and up, but children must be accompanied by an adult. The activity costs $6 for members and $9 for nonmembers.

In January, Baltimore Woods will offer an art exhibit in its Interpretive Center and an “Under the Owl Moon” event, where people look for owls at night and then come inside afterward for hot chocolate, Drake said.

When there’s snow on the ground, visitors can go snowshoeing — rentals are $5 — and partake in the fire-building program.

“We have a really nice diversity of landscape at the Woods,” Drake said. “We’re part of the Central New York Land Trust and have lots of hills, valleys, switchbacks, deep forests and a brooke that runs through it all.”

In addition to on-site programming, Baltimore Woods hosts a “Nature in the City” program that provides a hands-on science education to 19 elementary schools in the Syracuse City School District, according to the center’s

website. The program is in its 16th year.

Baltimore Woods Nature Center’s Interpretive Center is open from 9 a.m to 4 p.m.

Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The center is closed on Sunday.

Whiskey Hollow Nature Preserve Whiskey Hollow Road, Memphis

Whiskey Hollow, a part of the Central New York Land Trust, is home to 43 acres of trails.

The woods provide nesting sites for many bird species, and the National Audubon Society has named the hollow an “Important Bird Area,” according to the land trust’s website.

The hollow provides signs to help visitors navigate the area. To locate the trails, look for a log cabin house on your right just before Whiskey Hollow Road.

Whiskey Hollow Nature Preserve is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Green Lakes State Park 7900 Green Lakes Road, Fayetteville

Located 20 minutes from Syracuse, Green Lakes State Park features two glacial lakes and forest areas. Activities and amenities offered include cabins, campsites and nature trails.

Snowshoeing is offered at the lake for $2 per hour, or $10 per day. The park will host a First Day Hike — a 2.1 mile walk around the lake — on New Year’s Day. Green Lakes State Park is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week.

The common cold-weather beers include ales, India Pale Ales, lagers, stouts and porters.

They’re usually brewed with traditional holiday spices and have a darker color from coffee or chocolate, said Purdy and Scott Jackson, who has been bartending for Now and Later since its opening.

Jackson said he frequently directs customers to varieties of holiday beers depending on their preference or what they’re used to drinking.

“If somebody came in and wanted a little bit of nutmeg flavor, or cinnamon, I would direct them toward Southern Tier 2XMAS,” Jackson said, explaining that the beer is a spiced double ale brewed with orange peels, fig paste, ginger root and cinnamon.

The store gets craft beers from the

Founders Brewing Co. and Bell’s Brewery, Inc. in Michigan from New York state distributors licensed to sell certain out-of-state drinks. The store also buys beers in kegs when smaller local breweries lack wholesale representation and packaging for their drinks, Norcross said.

Many customers hang out on the bar side of the store, but also wander to the store side and buy beers to take home, Purdy said.

washington gone, that’s one of his teammates. But obviously that opens the doors to showcase what he can do,” said Howard Washington Sr., Washington’s father. “… He’s just excited for an opportunity.”

Washington has seen time on the court in every game since Thorpe left. In the first half against Kansas — the first game after Thorpe left — Howard picked up three first-half fouls.

Washington played eight minutes against the then-No. 2 team in the country after sitting out the previous two games.

Washington decommitted from Butler before going to prep school and turned down other offers just to get his shot at Syracuse.

Washington Sr. said the coaching staff made no promises as to how many minutes Washington would play when he got to Syracuse.

As many freshmen do, Washington had to get used to not playing much after coming off years of being one of the leading players on his own team. It’s difficult to not know when he’s going to be coming into the game, Washington said. And playing spot minutes sometimes prevents him from getting into a natural rhythm.

Still, even when he wasn’t playing, Washington found ways to contribute. While on the bench, he normally sits between head coach Jim Boeheim and the assistant coaches.

He’ll talk with assistant Gerry McNamara and point out things that he sees going on in the game. Washington said it helps him stay engaged in the game, and that McNamara has been impressed by Washington’s eye.

“If you’re interacting with the game on the bench,” Washington said, “then it’ll just translate right onto the court when you’re in.”

During the Colgate game, Washington said he told Oshae Brissett to do a quick spin move after catching the ball on the low block since the defender wasn’t in a position to stop it. When Brissett was asked postgame how Washington helps him out, he pointed to that exact moment. Coming out of the timeout in which the two discussed it, Brissett caught the ball, did a quick spin and got fouled.

“I look to him as a leader. He was my point guard last year. I always listen to what he has to say,” said Brissett, who played alongside Washington last year at Athlete Institute Prep. “He’s got high basketball IQ and he helps me out a lot.”

After the Kansas game, Boeheim said Washington played “fine.” Against Colgate, he said that he wished he could have given him more minutes. Brissett said Boeheim praised Washington in the locker room postgame.

Washington stressed that he tried to prepare the same way the whole season and to keep the same approach whether he was playing or not. Against Colgate, Washington drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing, his first-ever college basket. He ran back on defense with the same expression on his face

as he normally has.

Washington Sr. and Washington talk a few times a week, Washington Sr. said, and always after games. The postgame talks usually consist of making sure Washington is always ready.

Brooke Avery tied for team lead in goals in her 2nd year

Brooke Avery has had to be patient throughout her entire collegiate hockey career. She struggled to make a mark on the ice in her first two seasons, tallying eight points combined in those seasons.

But now, in her third year of eligibility, Avery has finally found success.

After transferring to Syracuse (5-11-2, 4-3-1 CHA) from University of New Hampshire before the 2015-16 season, she was forced to sit out and watch for one season, per NCAA rules regarding transfers. Even when she stepped on the ice, she did not see immediate success. Currently a redshirt junior, Avery is contributing at SU. The winger has six goals and three assists thus far this season, tied for the team lead in goals.

“Last year, she struggled a bit,” SU head coach Paul Flanagan said. “We always knew she would come along and be a good player for us.”

In high school, she was offered by both UNH and SU. Deciding to stay close to home, Avery chose UNH, approximately 45 miles from her hometown of Concord, New Hampshire. Over 36 games in her freshman season as Wildcat, Avery tallied one goal and one assist.

Women’s basketball

Syracuse (10-0) women’s basketball will wait eight days to play its next game after winning on Saturday evening against Drexel 72-62 in the Carrier Dome. The first three games once students leave campus will be the conclusion of Syracuse’s nonconference schedule. All three games will come in some type of tournament play.

First, Syracuse travels to play Coastal Carolina in the Carolinas Challenge on Dec. 17 before traveling to Las Vegas for the Duel in the Desert. In that tournament, Syracuse will play the host school UNLV after a matchup with No. 6 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were the only team to beat perennial powerhouse and No. 1 Connecticut last season, snapping the Huskies’ streak of 111 victories.

The Orange will open ACC play three days prior to the men when it travels to No. 3 Notre Dame on Dec. 28. Notre Dame is one of three ranked opponents Syracuse will play over break, with the other two being the Bulldogs and No. 13 Florida State.

scorers started in the summer. Drummond said it began the first time they played and snapped her fingers in affirmation.

“We read the defense,” Mangakahia said.

“We make eye contact and I know she’ll catch it … She cuts everywhere.”

“I like to cut,” Miranda affirmed.

The Orange (10-0) have been led by Mangakahia and Drummond, two-first year players whose styles of play complement each other. The pair rank first and second in a number of statistical categories for Syracuse, including steals, points per game, and minutes played. Mangakahia leads the Orange with 113 assists, 45 of which have been to Drummond. SU’s star point guard has assisted 68 percent of Drummond’s field goals. “(Drummond) is a smart player,” Hillsman said. “Tiana is a fantastic passer … I don’t want to mess it up. Whatever they are doing, let them keep doing that.”

Last year’s squad relied on two players that formed “America’s best backcourt,” Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes. That pair-

Following a difficult freshman year, she looked to transfer. Wishing to mix intense athletics with challenging academics, Avery came to SU, intending to transfer into the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Success didn’t immediately coincide with her transfer. She spent much of the season sitting on the sideline, watching her teammates and learning the system.

While she tallied more points than her first year at UNH, Avery only accumulated six points in 2016-17. Despite the improvement, she still was not reaching her full potential, Flanagan said.

“Hockey comes naturally to her and her game is only going to get better,” sophomore Savannah Rennie said. “She’s got great skills out there. She sees the game really well.”

Yet even when she was not having success on the ice, Avery said she was always confident that if she worked hard enough, she would develop.

This season, the work has finally paid off.

On Nov. 11, as the Orange faced a onegoal deficit against Penn State with eight minutes remaining, Avery made her mark.

After a Rennie shot missed the net, Avery jumped on the opportunity, tipping it in for the game-tying goal.

against formidable opponents. Thus far this year, Syracuse has only played two games in which it didn’t win by double digits.

Syracuse entered winter break last season on a four-game winning streak while already having three demerits that year with ing scored 42.6 points per game and led the Orange to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Hillsman declared his team would need to be led by more than two players, but he didn’t foresee Mangakahia and Drummond’s fast start. The pair averages more than 35 points per game.

“When you had Lex,” Hillsman said on Nov. 7, “when you had Britt, you could give them the ball and say go get a bucket for us. Right now, we don’t have that player.”

Throughout the season, he’s admitted that Mangakahia has become SU’s go-to scorer with her ability to dribble past defenders. Hillsman said that Mangakahia is the reason the Orange was winning games after Hartford.

Drummond has become an all-around scorer with her ability to shoot the 3 and score inside the paint. When the Orange defense forces a miss, Drummond and Mangakahia are the two leading its transition offense.

Mangakahia often brings the ball up the court while Drummond either cuts inside or drifts to the corner for a 3-pointer.

In years past, Syracuse picks up its play after Winter break. In the last two seasons, Syracuse boasts a 22-9-1 overall record after the New Year. Last season, Syracuse netted 49 goals after the break,13 more than it scored before the pause in play.

Both Syracuse head coach Paul Flanagan and his players see the break as a benefit, citing the rest time as beneficial. SU captain Stephanie Grossi also noted the added time to work out during the over three week break as particularly important for building strength to help in the latter half of the season.

When Syracuse returns to play on Jan. 5, it will face defending CHA champion and No. 10 Robert Morris. Syracuse will visit the Colonials, which were picked to win the CHA title prior to the 2017 season, for a two-game series.

It will be the Orange’s first shot at redemption from last year’s conference title game until Robert Morris travels to Syracuse on Feb. 23 and 24 to finish Syracuse’s regular season.

Syracuse Athletics will play 20 contests over winter break

W

hile students leave for winter break between the fall and spring semesters, Syracuse athletes’ winter seasons carry on. Classes officially break Friday, Dec. 15 and won’t pick up again until the start of the spring semester on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

In all, eight games will be played on Syracuse’s campus while students are gone on break. Here’s what to know about the 20 Syracuse sporting events that will take place, both home and away, while students aren’t on campus.

Men’s basketball

Syracuse (8-1) men’s basketball team will play nine times during the break, including its last four nonconference games of the season. The most notable of those will be its first game over the break against Georgetown on Dec. 16 in Washington, D.C. Syracuse lost to the Hoyas last year, 78-71, in the Carrier Dome in one of its five losses before Atlantic Coast

Conference play in the 2016-2017 season. Syracuse played 10 times in between semesters last year and broke even with a 5-5 record, including a 30-point loss to St. John’s in the Carrier Dome.

If Syracuse can win just one of its last four nonconference games, it will surpass its 8-5 nonconference record from last season.

Six hours before the ball drops to celebrate the New Year, Syracuse will tip off its ACC slate against Virginia Tech in the Dome. Last year, Syracuse lost its opening ACC matchup at Boston College, 96-81.

The Orange went on to lose seven more games in ACC play on the way to a second round exit from the National Invitational Tournament. It’s safe to say if Syracuse wants to make the NCAA Tournament come March, it will need to perform better in conference this season.

Washington fills Thorpe’s void Duo of Mangakahia, Drummond leads SU

Ever since he was a kid, Howard Washington dreamt of playing at Syracuse. Despite donning the SU jersey this year, the freshman point guard hadn’t played much to start the season.

ing guards. At the beginning of the season, whenever one of them saw some time off, it’d be graduate transfer Geno Thorpe coming on.

On Dec. 1, it was announced that Thorpe was leaving Syracuse.

With Thorpe gone, that leaves Washington, Howard and Battle as the only three scholarship guards for SU (8-1), meaning Washington will naturally be stepping into a larger role.
