Each year, the staff of The Daily Orange produces this Orientation Guide, which is meant to serve as a resource for new students to be better informed about the community they’re coming to. This year’s guide aims to be as practical as possible. In News you’ll find stories about some of the most pressing issues at the university. In our Opinion section you’ll learn about our editorial board. In Pulp, our feature section, there’s a guide to the SU food scene.

And if you’re a sports fan, our Sports staff has you covered with goal-line-to-goal-line coverage of SU sports.

The first major construction project of Syracuse University’s 20-year campus renovation plan, the University Place promenade, was completed on Aug. 22. But a few faculty members remain skeptical of the project — as well as future updates to the SU campus contained in the Campus Framework.

Frustration over where SU’s money is spent and a lack of transparency about the promenade were at the forefront of the initial complaints about the project. These particular concerns are still present among some faculty, even though the promenade has already been built.

“The issue is more than just informing us, which (the administration) didn’t do. It’s about letting us participate in decision making. W here is shared governance? W here is transparency?” said Deborah Pellow, an SU anthropology professor in the Maxwell

School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

“It’s about where our priorities are as far as expenditure.”

The promenade is a pedestrian walkway in front of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and E.S. Bird Library. The project, which cost an estimated $6 million, was built over the summer, replacing the street originally there before it.

But before construction crews broke ground at the end of May, two petitions against the promenade with more than 300 signatures were sent to Chancellor Kent Syverud. Soon after, a protest was held.

Despite the petitions and the protest, the university went forward with construction.

The project was kept on schedule even though the administration initially delayed construction to hold open meetings with those skeptical of the promenade.

The core complaint about the promenade was that the university should not be spending money on SU’s appearance. Instead, crit-

ics say, that money should be put toward academics, which is a lasting concern with major renovations planned for the future of SU. “Syracuse University, like all private universities, is competing to attract high tuition paying students. When prospective students visit Syracuse how it looks on the surface matters. So, the university prioritizes surfacelevel appearances over substantive improvements and investments in actual education,” said Matt Huber, a geography professor at SU, in an email.

In one of the open meetings held with critics of the promenade before construction started, Syverud himself admitted that communication about the promenade was “not as good as it should have been.”

There is an official website where people can leave comment on the Campus Framework, but construction on the promenade started before the plan was released.

People to know: New 2016-17 university administrators

Syracuse University will have some new faces in its administration for the 2016-17 academic year.

Michele Wheatly, Craig Boise, Michael Tick and David Van Slyke are each entering their first full

academic year at SU. Here’s more information on each of the new administrators: Michele Wheatly: Vice chancellor and provost Wheatly was named SU’s vice chancellor and provost in March and took over the position in May. Previously, Wheatly served

as special assistant to West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee. She was also provost at W VU from January 2010 through June 2014.

As SU’s provost, Wheatly will lead the implementation of the Academic Strategic Plan, one of the three components of Chan-

cellor Kent Syverud’s Fast Forward Syracuse initiative.

Wheatly replaced Liz Liddy, who had previously served as interim vice chancellor and provost. Liddy returned to serving as dean of the School of Information Studies, the position she held prior to becoming interim

provost, after W heatly was appointed.

News briefs: SU releases Campus Framework; Deacon wins

It was a busy summer in Syracuse University news. Here are some major stories you may have missed: Campus Framework is released The university released a set of nearand long-term updates and renovations in June planned for SU’s physical campus over the next 20 years. The Campus Framework is still in its draft phase and feedback is still being accepted on its website. Here are some highlights: Near-term: • The University Place promenade was completed Monday, transforming the street into a walkway. Another promenade will be built on Waverly Avenue, though it will be different in form than the University Place promenade and will not prevent traffic from passing through.

• SU will renovate the Carrier Dome with a roof replacement and accessibility improvements.

• Archbold Gymnasium will be transformed into “The Arch,” a new studentfocused health and wellness complex. The Arch will include a multi-purpose group space, two pools, an exercise gym, a pharmacy, four basketball courts and a track and cardio balcony.

• The National Veterans Resource Complex will be built on Waverly Avenue.

The building will house a veteran-focused medical school and become an important location for resource and programming related to veteran and military affairs.

Long-term: • All housing on South Campus will be moved to Main Campus within the next 20 years. The university will build more residence halls to fit all of its students on Main

Campus, adding more than 3,600 beds in the process.

• The Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center will be convertedinto student housing. A new boutique hotel will replace it nearby.

• The houses currently on Ostrom Avenue — including the LGBT Resource Center and The Daily Orange — will be torn down and replaced with student housing.

• The Schine Student Center will be renovated, adding more space to become a hub for all student organization offices.

• E. S. Bird Library will be renovated and a bridge connecting Walnut Park, Bird Library and the University Place promenade will be built.

• A promenade will connect West Campus and the Quad, making that area more pedestrian-friendly. The Physics building will be demolished to make room for the promenade.

Juice Jam to be held at later date This semester’s Juice Jam will be a few weeks later than when it is normally held.

The fall concert will be held on Sept. 25 at Skytop Field on South Campus. The later date is because University Union did not want the concert to held on Sept. 11, a UU spokesman said when the announcement was made on Aug. 7.

Colleen Deacon wins primary SU alumna Colleen Deacon defeated SU professor Eric Kingson in New York’s 24th District Democratic primary. Deacon will face Republican incumbent John Katko in November for a congressional seat representing Syracuse.

Enrollment Management and Student Affairs merged SU announced that two administrative offices, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, will be consolidated into one

Breakdown of Syracuse University’s health resources, services

Heading off to college at the end of the summer is often equal parts exciting and stressful — especially when it’s your first year.

It is easy to become overwhelmed, but it’s important that you take the time to care for yourself mentally and physically.

Here is a breakdown of the many resources available to you on campus, should you have any issues or inquiries regarding mental or physical health: Counseling Center 200 Walnut Place; 315-443-4715 The Counseling Center’s mission is to support and enhance student health and wellness through their services.

“These services include, but are not limited to, individual counseling, group therapy, referrals, consultation, and advocacy,” said Shannon Feeney Andre, communications manager of the Division of Student Affairs in an email. “The Counseling Center also provides 24/7 crisis support services, including 24/7 support through the Sexual and Relationship Violence Response Team.”

The center is staffed with experienced clinicians who are readily available to assist students in addressing their concerns related to adjusting to college life, mental health, sexual and relationship violence and substance abuse.

All services are free for full-time students.

Syracuse University Health Services works in collaboration with several other health, wellness and safety units on campus with the goal of assisting students in maintaining good health. “It’s a place for everyone to come to learn about their identities and build community with others,” said Abby Fite, program coordinator, in an email. “Students might want to connect to the LGBT Resource Center to make friends and build community, to learn more about themselves and their identities, to talk about and act towards social justice.”

Fite added that the resource center itself is a community space, open for students to meet people and do homework from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Recreation Services Just off the Quad, next to the Carrier Dome; 315-443-4386 The Department of Recreation Services offers an abundance of ways to keep fit while at SU. Fitness classes are open to all SU and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students, faculty and staff with a valid SU or SUNY-ESF ID. Free fitness classes are offered on Mondays and Fridays, and others are available for a fee. Intramural sports and late night at the gym are also offered.

North Campus has six fitness centers: Archbold and Flanagan gymnasiums, Brockway Fitness Center, Ernie Davis Fitness Center, Marion Fitness Center, Marshall Square Mall Fitness Center and the Women’s Building.

South Campus has four fitness facilities: the Goldstein Fitness Center, Skytop Recreation Area, Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion and the Outdoor Education Center and Challenge Course.

They offer one-on-one support for students of color and reach out to all students who are struggling with issues of race and diversity.

One can also become involved with the OMA through their many programs, including those based on leadership, mentoring, intergroup dialogues and spoken word poetry. OMA opens its doors to any student seeking a home away from home on campus.

5 ways for first-year students to stay plugged in on SU’s campus

L

eaving behind the days of weak high school Wi-Fi and strict no-cell-phone policies for the technological jungle of college might be a culture shock for some.

With so many academic, social and experiential opportunities and privileges, Syracuse University gives students brand new ways to interact with their devices while learning in the classroom, finishing work outside of class or just enjoying leisure time. Here are five tips for making the most of your time at SU with the devices you know and love.

INTERNET EXPLORER ITS is helpful for pretty much any miscellaneous tech-related issue you’re having, and being a free service, it can never hurt to give them a shot if you need help.

Forget to buy a printer for your dorm?

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other options.

Don’t let privileged upperclassmen tell you otherwise – you’ll be more than fine without a printer in your place. Included in your student fees is a mandatory $20 printing charge and you can use it to its fullest by heading over to any printing center on campus, from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications to the Schine Student Center.

Computer labs with printers are also conveniently located in or near every dorm on campus, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble locating them in whatever building you’re living in.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of logging in to a school computer and locating the file you want to print, you can print wirelessly from your personal computer using the SURA utility. SURA, which stands for Syracuse University Remote Access, can connect you to whatever printing location is most convenient to you, and the cost of printing – 2 cents per page – will be deducted from your account. You can download SURA and learn more about it on its website.

If all else fails, one of your friendly new neighbors probably brouht a printer. Just don’t mooch off of them too much.

Something wrong with your computer, phone or tablet? SU’s IT Services can help you out – for free.

It’s inevitable that at some point in your college career, something awful will happen to your computer during a time that you really need it most. You can lessen the blow of these moments by heading over to the ITS Service Center, located in the Life Sciences Complex. Walk in through the main glass entrance — you can’t miss it.

The Service Center can provide support for issues like removing computer viruses, setting up your device with the school’s printing system or helping to diagnose any technology-related issue you might have. All basic services at the Service Center are included in your tuition at no extra charge.

If you have an Apple or Dell device, under warranty or past it, you can get more specialized help at ‘CuseTech, which is located in the SU Bookstore at the Schine Student Center. Unlike the Service Center, ‘CuseTech is authorized to make hardware repairs to a device if a part needs fixing or replacement.

If you’re a more independent spirit or just can’t be bothered to walk all the way to the other end of campus, ITS provides support over their phone hotline for free, reachable from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays at 315-443-2677. If you need help outside of the usual hours, you’re welcome to leave a message via the hotline and a representative will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

Support extends beyond basic tech issues, too; I had an issue while moving into my new place last year where the on-campus cable wasn’t showing up on the new television I brought to school. Working through the problem step-by-step over the phone with an ITS service representative, I was able to figure out the problem quickly and turn on the Yankee game in no time.

Ignore the haters, AirOrangeX is a blessing

Any huge wireless network will have its weak spots, but SU’s campus-wide AirOrangeX is still one of the best perks you’ll get during your time here. Wireless speeds on campus are up to 12 times as fast as your average Wi-Fi at home (according to my own speed measurements from Speedtest.net compared to national data from OpenSignal), so downloads will download faster, Netflix will buffer a lot less often and Blackboard will load in an instant.

But something worth investing in to improve your online experience is an Ethernet cable. Available for as little as $6 on Amazon, an Ethernet cable will make your web browsing experience in your dorm miles better. With an Ethernet cable, you’ll get internet speeds on your laptop up to twice as fast as wireless connections.

Plus, your connection will never randomly drop out like the wireless network may tend to do at times.

school, an Ethernet cable will be essential, since you can’t get online on any PlayStation or Xbox without it. Depending on how your dorm is set up, this might involve draping a 25-foot cable across your room to your television. Speaking from personal experience: duct-taped cable across your room might not be the most aesthetically-speaking tech solution out there — but life in a freshman dorm is full of sacrifices, after all.

Take advantage of the student services available to you Besides the well-known service centers and computer labs, it’s also good to know about the additional resources available to you for whatever kind of project you want to get done.

Among those is a place you won’t find at many colleges: the MakerSpace. Located in the Kimmel Hall Computer Lab, this unique resource gives students access to tools like 3-D printers, laser engravers and embroidery machines. Machinery is free for students, but additional materials may be necessary depending on the project.

The Schine Copy Center is probably the best general purpose printing center on campus, with its high-quality printers and paper for any kind of project you want to print. Whether it’s a graphic design project, flyers for your student organization’s upcoming event or a cool new poster for your wall, the printing center can get it done, all for a very reasonable rate.

But beyond all the physical resources available, one that Bird Library’s Head of Learning Commons Lesley Pease says is most underutilized, is the experienced staff stationed at most tech centers around campus.

Pease says that students often don’t realize “how much help there is available to them,” and that it’s “totally OK” to ask specialists for help if you need it.Pease, who is stationed at Bird Library on campus, notices how surprised students are when they learn more about the printing technology available there for free.

“Some students are surprised at how much tech help and resources there are at the library,” Pease said. She says students aren’t aware that “there is help for all kinds of printing, assistance with the plotters, that they can scan to email, and how many color printing options there are.”

No matter where you use your technology around campus, never forget to be aware of

your surroundings. In a place as diverse in talents and interests as SU, you never know who could be of tremendous help to you next.

Use your technology responsibly If you’re planning on using your on-campus internet connection to pirate movies, TV shows or music, you should be wary of some of the school’s restrictions on illegally downloading copyrighted material.

While the school doesn’t track any of your internet activity, torrents — the types of files distributed on sites like The Pirate Bay which often contain copyrighted materials — are completely blocked on the campus internet connection. You can try all you want to download that movie, but odds are the school won’t even let you.

And while there are ways around that restriction, doing so can come with some pretty steep consequences. ITS can trace any reported downloads to your device’s IP address. According to the Syracuse University ITS website, computers violating copyright laws will be quarantined from the network.

After repeated offenses, students face loss of all network privileges at SU. These aren’t rules to take lightly, so be sure to be careful with how you use the network during your time on campus.

Beyond pirating materials, make sure to use your devices responsibly while in class. SU doesn’t have any rules on the books about using computers and phones in class — in fact, some professors even encourage using them sometimes — but you should exercise common sense when using them at all times.

It might seem harmless to check in on iMessage or Facebook in the middle of a long lecture, and in many cases you should be fine, but policies on technology use are up to the professor’s discretion. Be sure to look out on your new classes’ syllabuses for individual policies on technology, since some professors are a lot more lenient with technology use than others.

Go forth and make the best of tech on SU’s campus Whether you want to be adventurous and experiment in the MakerSpace, want to figure out the easiest and most convenient ways to get your work done or want help when you need your computer most, SU provides plenty of options for you to take advantage of.

As a main takeaway, don’t be afraid to venture out of your comfort zone with your devices. At the end of the day, your life will ideally be easier and more stressfree because of the new ways you’ll use technology — providing that you play all your cards right.

Freshmen, meet The Daily Orange Editorial Board As first-year students arrive to the Syracuse University campus with bulging storage boxes and tightly packed suitcases, the reality of opportunity to meet a community full of new faces, floormates and professors’ names becomes clear. And in the rush to get into the swing of student life, we wanted to introduce our editorial board, too.

Made up of the editor in chief, the managing editor and the head editor from each newspaper section of The Daily Orange, The D.O. Editorial Board serves as the voice of our nearly 113-year-old institution, one that has been independent of the university since 1971.

The editorial board aims to contribute the perspectives of students to discussions that concern Syracuse University and the greater Syracuse community and are often centered on policies, events and administrative actions.

As a board, we value full transparency in the ways in which our daily editorial comes together. Our topics are selected by the editorial editor on the basis of news value and relevance to SU student life . Once a general consensus is reached during the nightly roundtable, the editorial editor condenses the primary points of the conversation into the edit board, though they do not offer their opinion during these discussions.

Because we are financially independent from the university, our board has the opportunity to hold the SU administration accountable for discrepancies in policies and programming. It also gives us the freedom to

be critical and talk about tough issues. And as an institution that is able to contribute an SU student perspective on campus and regional news, The D.O. is always open to considering topical pitches from the university body and local community.

Through these editorials we hope to spark a dialogue and communicate varying perspectives to the campus community in a way that is digestible. Of course, it’s up to the reader to decide whether or not the argument is valid. But regardless of whether D.O. readers agree with the stance of the board on any given topic, we encourage our readers to express their own thoughts through letters to the editor.

The central idea of the editorial board is to unite student body, Syracuse community and newspaper staff in discussion. In the News, Sports and Pulp sections, The D.O. is rightfully bound to objectivity. But the editorial board, which is housed under the Opinion section, is the one place where the staff behind the newspaper can take a stance on pertinent issues with an emphasis on accountability.

It’s about making sense of the news to give commendation where it’s due and to make sure that institutional lapses don’t fall through the cracks. And it’s for this reason that we encourage freshmen and other new students to challenge us, engage with us and acknowledge that the editorial board does not end these discussions, but rather nurtures them.

Men should step up, strive to embrace feminism in college

W

ith the high tensions surrounding the upcoming presidential election, it seems that many have taken to voicing their opinions on social media platforms without first educating themselves on what they are speaking out against.

While some Americans are marveling at the possibility of Hillary Clinton becoming our first female president, others are scoffing at the idea that a woman could effectively run the country.

Even on a daily basis, terms like “feminazi” are thrown around on Twitter at the women who don’t apologize for their beliefs on gender equality and it’s almost as if “feminism” is a dirty word.

President Barack Obama recently made his stance on the feminist movement crystal clear in his essay on feminism published in the September issue of Glamour.

Obama wrote that it is “absolutely men’s responsibility” to join the fight against misogyny and that men need to “work hard and be deliberate about creating truly equal relationships.” The president touched on an important gap in understanding the gender equality movement: by standing up for one

another, we become more united.

Somehow, in this Internet age, the fourth wave of women’s rights movement became synonymous with man-hating for a lot of millennials. But that’s not what it’s all about.

Young people’s fight for the empowerment of women should never imply the oppression of men or setting of social standards across genders. Instead, conversations on gender equality — whether in the classroom, among friends or on social media — should be an opportunity to bring men and women together, and create a more welcoming campus climate at Syracuse University.

Obama isn’t the only man in a position of great political power taking a stand for women’s equality.

Just last fall, SU alumnus and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden came to Syracuse to teach us a little lesson on feminism and anti-sexual assault efforts with the “It’s On Us” initiative. The activism of both Obama and Biden demonstrate that your identity — in this case, gender —

should not make you indifferent to the struggles of others. In fact, it should make you more willing to raise your voice for those who can’t.

Joining the fight means being an active advocate for the cause and educating those around you so that the message is heard. Some fraternities at the University of Maryland, have shown their solidarity with women by educating their members on consent and making it clear that they do not tolerate sexual assault.

These efforts take place on our very own campus with organizations like A Men’s Issue that work to spread awareness of sexual and

relationship violence. As a former three-term president of A Men’s Issue, 2016 SU graduate Anthony McGriff is a prime example of why it’s vital that men use their voice to bring light to these issues.

“As an outspoken, male feminist, you get to see how male privilege allows me to move in this work,” said McGriff. “I’d tell men to embrace it: feminism leads to a healthier masculinity.”

It’s not that women haven’t been preaching these ideas for decades, but the importance of these beliefs are more likely to be heard by the masses when it’s brought up by men — who have the privilege of their gender to give them a different reason for speaking up.

As we enter college and begin to form our own sets of beliefs, the men who support concepts like equal pay and a woman’s right to her body should not be afraid to identify as feminists. On the other hand, the men that hesitate to stand up for social, political and economic gender equality should re-evaluate their feelings and take the true objective of feminism into consideration.

We see every day why we need feminism on college campuses.

Whether it’s her personality, her sexuality or her intelligence, it seems that women are always “too much” or “too little” of something, but never quite enough. The young women that step foot on SU’s campus should be able to do more than just exist in the classroom or the workplace: they should be able to thrive and rise as high as they hope to with their education, without a glass ceiling getting in their way.

And in the same way that women should be allowed to make it as far as they dream, they should also able to make their own decisions about their bodies. SU students, both men and women, made a radical statement about sexual assault and slut-shaming when they organized the first ever on-campus Slut Walk.

“Being a man” doesn’t mean that one has to promote the mistreatment of women or the idea that women are somehow lesser. It’s about having the courage to stand up for women’s rights, even when it doesn’t fit into traditional ideas of masculinity. So, to all men on campus: it’s time to “man up” and be feminists.

Incoming students should seize SU opportunities for growth

C

ollege is the elusive place from movies and TV shows where you cross off a bunch of firsts, “find yourself” and leave thinking it was the best four years of your life. But what will make college the best four years is not all that it promises you, but the way you go about fulfilling those promises.

As Syracuse University freshmen start their first year on the Hill, don’t passively wait for the clubs and courses you’re passionate about to find you. Starting college gives you a four-year-long blank slate and it’s for this reason that you should come into college with a completely open mind — a readiness to expand on what you already know and find out what you don’t know at all.

These years at SU are when you can discern your own beliefs and ideologies. At time when you may want to cling to the familiarity of your parents’ political party and religion, freshman year is the chance to use the tools that SU offers and figure out who you are before you head out into the real world after graduation.

The early years of college should be the time when you take the courses that interest you. Take that intergroup dialogue course, that political science class, psych class or sports class that sparks your interest now,

instead of later. It’s important to pursue classes for your major and get your prerequisites done, but don’t wait until junior or senior year to learn about the different lenses that others see the world in and challenge your own perspective on life.

Across every department at SU, there are esteemed faculty that have spent years digging through each and every topic. By taking these classes now, you will start considering ideologies and viewpoints you just may have gone your entire life without thinking about. One of the worst things you can do is squander the early time you have to explore your curiosities, only to feel confused and second guess yourself when the time comes to focus on a track.

But the learning doesn’t have to just stop there: get involved in one of the student groups SU has to offer. Particularly in an election year, it’s important to figure out where you stand on the problems that young people today face in America. No one is ever too young to make the effort to educate themselves on social issues

and their legislation, because the outcomes of these votes affect everyone. Whether or not you’re looking to get your foot in the political door, joining a political organization like College Democrats or the non-partisan Political Dialogue Group forces students to pay attention to politics as well as broaden their social stance by listening to different ones.

Another prevalent group on campus is the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), which is New York state’s largest student-directed research and advocacy organization. The group has chapters at 17 college campuses across New York state, including SU. Teaming up with NYPIRG gives students the chance to learn more about pressing concerns such as environmental protection, higher education, government reform, and public health, to name a few.

These issues do and will continue to affect young people of this generation. As such, SU sophomore Anissa Vasquez, who has worked for NYPIRG’s New York City office, said she believes that it is important for young people to know they have a voice and the opportunity to challenge the status quo.

“The incentive to having hard conversations and challenging yourself to have an open mind

about all things going on right now, is that you are far more aware, and a lot more conscious on a large range of issues,” said Vasquez.

And ultimately, that’s what you should want when you leave these four years: to learn as much as you can so that you know much more when you enter the real world.

Because really, the real world is just one big college. Put aside the questionable party behaviors that seem to work now but probably won’t be accommodated outside the parameters of these four years, and what you have is a bunch of different people, exploring a bunch of different ideas, actively trying to create themselves and their own world.

So teach yourself to be open to all the opportunities that people, classes, and groups will present to you over the next four years. Opportunities to solidify and challenge your beliefs, to learn more about what the world you live in is all about and how you fit into that narrative.

Teach yourself how to be a student of life, and college won’t just be the best four years of your life — your life will be the best years of your life.

A freshman’s guide to social, sexual pressures on campus

hen it comes to partying, your first semester in college can feel like a blur of confusion: for many freshmen, the first few nights of socializing at Syracuse University are filled with the awkwardness, experimentation, and the trial and error of going out on a Tuesday.

As you find your squad and get your costumes ready to dive in to SU’s night scene, it’s important to have a strong sense of self, even when alcohol and sexual pressure are in the mix. It’s undeniable that you will feel the need to establish yourself socially and you might feel that being “down for anything” or out drinking your friends would be the way to do this. And while it’s frightful to have to start all over as a freshman, it’s much scarier to wake up one morning unaware of what happened the night before and unsure if any sexual misconduct occurred.

Don’t be afraid to say “no” and stand up for your fellow classmates In the face of unwanted sexual pressure, it is crucial to speak up and say “no.” It’s your body and your rules, so you should not agree to have sex if you feel at all uncomfortable or hesitant about the person or circumstances. It is always OK to say “no” or to make some excuse to leave a party if you feel uncomfortable — I guarantee people won’t remember your excuse. It be may hard for freshmen to feel confident saying “no,” but you can’t let the pressure of your peers or your perceived social expectations of college interfere with your own safety and well-being.

The same rule applies for your peers.

Make sure your friends don’t fall into the same trap by being candid about uncomfortable experiences and look out for others at the party, even if they are not a friend. If another someone seems to need help, offer to bring them home or find their friends.

At SU, there are many campus organizations that you can get involved in to learn more about how to effectively combat sexual pressure and dismantle rape culture. The SU chapter of the It’s On Us campaign, Peer Educators Encouraging Healthy Relation-

ships & Sexuality (PEEHRS), Students Advancing Sexual Safety and Empowerment, (SASSE), A Men’s Issue and The Girl Code Movement all work to address these problems. Each one of these groups are all student-led and are at the forefront of campus activism about sex education, consent training and anti-sexual assault efforts.

Understand the effects of overdrinking Survivors should never be blamed for sexual assault, but it is important to acknowledge that alcohol is an important factor as it impairs students from making rational decisions and consenting to sexual activity.

Last school year, more than half of the calls for the Syracuse University Ambulance were for intoxicated freshmen — while some students pace themselves as they go out to fraternity houses or South Campus apartments, some students don’t make it out of the pregame.

Given the high rate of alcohol consumption among SU freshmen and the fact that up to 75 percent of physical and sexual assaults at colleges involve drunkenness on the victim’s or the assailant’s behalf, it’s unsurprising that the first six weeks of the fall semester have earned the reputation of the “Red Zone.” This period is the time when college women are the most vulnerable to sexual assault. So while it is understood that you are getting to know your limits in those first few nights of partying at SU, it is important to know your limits in order to stay safe.

Seek out help when you need it In the event that you are a survivor of sexual assault, don’t recede into the darkness of your dorm room. It’s key to know your options for support on SU’s campus and to know that you are never alone. The Counseling Center at SU has Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence services that are available 24/7 — students can go to the

center in person during office hours or call its staff directly. This is sort of accessibility is crucial to the center’s mission to help survivors feel comfortable and safe again.

In addition to the center’s dedication to educating the campus community about sexual assault, administrative support like this is a prime example of how colleges can combat and end rape culture by working together as faculty, staff and student body.

Girl Code Movement President Ellie Freeman is a senior inclusive early childhood and special education major who joined the group in her sophomore year of college after being sexually assaulted twice the year before. Freeman’s first assault occurred in January 2014. The perpetrator was a boy she was friends with at the time.

The second assault occurred in March 2014 by a guy that she had just met that night.

“GCM is a huge support system for me because many of the girls involved have

been sexually assaulted and/or know someone who has been sexually assaulted,” Freeman said in an email. “The bond created between people who have shared this experience is so unique.”

Freeman emphasized the importance of survivors not falling into a cycle of selfblame and seeking out resources after their assault. Senior public relations major and Girl Code Movement public relations vice president Mandisa Shields, on the other hand, wants all incoming students to understand that having sex with someone who won’t or can’t say “yes” is sexual assault.

“Yes means yes,” and if your partner is unable to consent: don’t ruin your life doing something you will always regret. Again, it’s important to understand the role that alcohol plays in the prevalence of sexual assault in party settings. Drinking responsibly while you have fun is the way to go.

Shields also says that students standing up for other students is a concrete way of preventing some incidents of assault.

This piece of advice also goes hand-inhand with the need to stand up and say “no” — for yourself as well as for your fellow students who aren’t in a state to make safe choices for themselves.

“This isn’t an inevitable problem.

Each and every one of us can do our part in making sure this doesn’t happen,” said Shields. “Don’t be a bystander. Don’t turn a blind eye.”

Go out and have fun — just make sure you do so safely.

The first few social nights at school can be some of the best memories and stories of freshman year. Go out with your new friends on your floor and from your classes, and start life in college off right. But while you’re having the best times of your life, be sure to know when to stand up for yourself and your fellow SU partygoers and seek help when you need it.

David Van Slyke: Maxwell dean Van Slyke’s path to becoming dean of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs was an unusual one. Prior to being appointed to the position over the summer, he had served for months as the chair of the Maxwell dean search committee.

That committee was disbanded in June, and the university named Van Slyke dean the following week. He previously served as associate dean.

University Place promenade causes changes to the bus system The University Place promenade is a new pedestrian walkway running along University Place on the SU campus. The promenade is part of the Campus Framework, a roadmap for SU’s physical campus construction renovations over the next 20 years. The Campus Framework is one of three parts of Chancellor Kent Syverud’s

Fast Forward Syracuse initiative.

All of the Centro bus stops originally located on University Place will be rebuilt on Comstock and Waverly Avenues, or rerouted to College Place. Pete Sala, vice president & chief campus facilities officer, said in an August email interview with The Daily Orange, that it was cheaper to start building the promenade earlier because the university was already going to replace the nearly 100-year-old water main beneath the University Place. It made “fiscal sense,” Sala said, to build the promenade over the summer instead of digging it back up at a later date.

“The promenade was mentioned in meetings several months ahead of time, but no details about the cost or specifics were given until a few weeks before construction was set to start,” Huber said.

The university has not released specifics on how much the Campus Framework will cost or where that money will come from. The $6 million estimate for the promenade was only disclosed to faculty in an open meeting in May, which would not have happened in the first place if the petitions weren’t sent to Sy verud.

As of Aug. 22, the final cost of the promenade has not been finalized, Sala said.

The lack of transparency about the budget specifically is not limited to the promenade, as faculty in the University Senate have complained about budget transparency before. Pellow said it will continue to be an issue as long as the administration makes important budgetary decisions without consulting the University Senate or the SU community.

SU orientation to include SU construction update: new transfer student event changes made to bus route

Syracuse Welcome 2016, Syracuse University’s new student orientation program, will be similar to last year’s program.

The schedule of events will closely mirror last year’s orientation, but will feature at least one new addition: a Transfer Student Welcome on Thursday.

Carrie Abbott, director of First-Year and Transfer Programs, said she and others found transfer students had a lot of SUspecific questions. The Transfer Student Welcome will provide an opportunity for these students to ask questions.

Most transfer students aren’t in residence halls, so they don’t get the opportunity to ask questions during floor meetings or other gatherings, Abbott said.

Thursday’s events will kick off with New Student Convocation, immediately followed by a picnic on the Quad for students and their families and ending with Home to the Dome.

Academic events will be held on Friday, giving students a chance to hear from the deans of their respective colleges as well as faculty and staff.

Citrus in the City will be held on Saturday and will introduce students to the city of Syracuse, Abbott said.

The schedule reflects a change made last year allowing students to first connect with the larger SU community on Thursday and then with their home schools and colleges on Friday.

“Our goal is to help students in their

transition to Syracuse University by meeting peers, by connecting with their schools and colleges and connecting to the city,” Abbot said.

Juwan Thompson, a junior marketing and entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises dual major, is one of 44 Orientation Leaders who will be facilitating Syracuse Welcome 2016.

Orientation Leaders train for about a week prior to students arriving on campus, Thompson said.

Thompson decided being an Orientation Leader would be a natural segue after running last year’s pre-orientation program. He said it will give him the opportunity to interact with new students and be in touch with their experiences.

“I think that’s what’s special about Orientation Leaders, it’s that it’s all 44 of us. It’s the impact that we all have. It’s the fact that we all collaboratively work together,” Thompson said. “That is what makes it work. That’s what makes the first year experience in our orientation program so great.”

Some of the other activities students will have a chance to participate in during orientation include the Hendricks Chapel Ice Cream Social and The Slice is Right Game Show on Wednesday evening. On Friday, ice skating will be held at the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion and a student involvement fair will be held on the Quad.

A senior university official said an email update regarding Syracuse University’s ongoing construction projects will be continued on a monthly basis after the summer break is over.

Pete Sala, vice president and chief campus facilities officer, said in an email that the weekly updates have allowed him to communicate with the SU community members and answer questions in real time.

The monthly updates will begin on Monday, Sept. 5 and will continue on the first Monday of each month until the school year ends.

Reflecting on how the project was put forward during the summer, Sala expressed his satisfaction over the progress it made during the summer in spite of its “aggressive schedule.” He also said a drought experienced in upstate New York worked in the project’s favor because of fewer rainy days.

Sala provided details of upcoming information sessions on the construction project in an effort to enhance communications between the university community and the Division of Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC). All of the information sessions will take place in the Heroy Geology Building, Room 113 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Dates are: • Tuesday, Aug. 23 • Tuesday, Sept. 20 • Wednesday, Oct. 19 • Tuesday, Nov. 15 • Wednesday, Dec. 7 Sala said most of the larger projects will be complete by August 22. Yet, he said,

there will be several projects that carry into the fall semester.

Changes to bus routes: New transportation options will be available for students’ return to campus in an effort to create more efficient traffic flow on campus, improve roadway safety and have increased accessibility to transportation services. Centro buses will be able to better serve the campus community on ADA-friendly route between the campus and the Centro transit hub located downtown. New stops are now in operation along College Place and Waverly Avenue. Four bus stops are now located on Waverly Avenue, two buses will be eastbound and two will be westbound. Passengers taking city routes to the downtown Centro transit hub will now be picked up on the Life Sciences Complex side of College Place.

Water main replacement: The majority of the 24-inch water main replacement in Sims Drive was completed Tuesday evening. However, testing, connecting and opening process could take about two more weeks.

Construction on the National Veterans Resource Complex: The NVRC, SU’s new flagship effort to establish itself as a hub for research and programming related to veteran and military affairs in central New York, was proposed in October 2015. The NVRC would be built on the western portion of Waverly Avenue near the SU campus, and the current building will be demolished in coordination with the city.

It’s fall again, and that means four thousand-odd students are stepping on Syracuse’s campus for the first time. In the flurry of buying textbooks, moving into dorms and meeting new friends, freshmen have a lot on their plate.

Luckily, Syracuse University assigns a plethora of advisers to guide the new students through their first couple of days. Though having a bunch of people around, throwing advice in your face can be a lot to handle. These resources can affect the initial college experience for the better. Here’s how to make the most of your adviser, whether it be residential, peer or academic.

Before any new student steps on campus, an advising counselor reaches out to them to help them with picking classes and makes them feel welcome about moving to upstate New York, said Kandice Salomone, associate dean for the advising and career Services office.

“Students are becoming very proactive, they want to know what’s going on around campus before they get there,” Salomone said.

“There’s an expectation to build relationships over the summer.”

Once students move in, they are offered more support. Each student is assigned an advising counselor to help build excitement about the school and the core curriculum. Once a student decides on a major, they are assigned an additional major adviser.

In addition, first-year students are required to take a one-credit seminar, CAS 101, led by a faculty member. Salomone said the faculty member’s goal is to help inspire see

A comprehensive, essential guide to surviving freshman year

A

h, freshman year orientation. I remember those days like they were only three years ago. My dad pulled the car up outside the Brewster/Boland/ Brockway Complex as I sat in the backseat, eagerly awaiting the moment I would roll that gray bin up to my room and spend the next two hours arguing with my mom over where I should put my lava lamp. I found out lava lamps weren’t allowed twenty minutes later when I got written up for the first time.

Though temporarily traumatized and significantly less hip and groovy, I made it through my first day by putting myself out there and making friends I now am awkwardly obligated to say “hello” to on campus even though we haven’t talked since that day we met. With that in mind, here are some tips and tricks to help you adjust to this strange, new, orange world.

1. No one else is nervous You’re the only one who will sometimes feel awkward making this huge transition this year. Everyone else is adjusting perfectly. Out of the four-thousand incoming freshmen, there is only one person who will have some uncomfortable moments. That person is you. from page 15

advisers students by discussing what makes them personally excited about their profession.

“What makes a science professor excited about science? It’s important for students to get a different perspective,” Salomone said.

Though it may seem like a lot advisers may for just one new student, Salomone said the goal of the advising office is to provide as many outlets as possible to students and make them as prepared as possible by the time they get to campus.

Reaching out to professors may seem overwhelming, Salomone said the biggest piece of advice she can give new students is to ask questions, and to make an appointment to see an adviser if you still are unsure.

“We are really excited about this program and just want students to feel comfortable here,” Salomone said.

••• When Katherine Tran stepped onto Syracuse University’s campus for the first time freshman year, she felt the way many other freshmen feel: overwhelmed. However, she said she quickly learned the ropes from her peer adviser, an older student in charge of helping freshmen with their schedules and transition into college.

Now, three years later, Tran, a senior advertising major, is still friends with the other four students in her peer advising group and stays in touch with her peer mentor. She says this initial experience at Syracuse pushed her to become a peer adviser as well.

Last year, Tran was abroad and missed last year’s freshman coming to campus for the first time. This year, she wants to play an important role in this class’ transition.

“I’ve always wanted to help the incoming freshman,” Tran said. “It’s my way of giving back.”

Tran will have her own group of five Newhouse students. She says her main job is to walk them through the process of finalizing their schedule, understanding the Newhouse core curriculum, and showing them where the academic buildings are.

2. If you stand very, very still, your RA can’t see you RAs are like dinosaurs. Some RA’s are like Tyrannosaurus rexes, ruthlessly hunting their prey with write-up pad in hand, tiny arms outstretched and all. Some RAs are like brachiosaurus, who just want to hang out and get to know you. And even some RAs are like pterodactyls, because oh my god, dude, pterodactyls are the coolest.

3. The dining hall food will destroy you You’d never have guessed your body could be so, uh, efficient. I’d recommend bringing some literature for your post-meal digestive sit. Everyone will be impressed when you tell them you read “War and Peace” — just don’t tell them where.

4. You can only join greek life after taking a semester of the Greek language

Tran said it is important not only for students to have someone to help with their schedules, but to have a student who has already been in their shoes and can relate to them and give them advice. She said freshman should use their peer adviser not just to talk classes, but to calm any nerves or homesickness.

“I want to ease the process of coming to college,” Tran said. “I know they are going to be scared and nervous, it’s natural, but I can relate to them as a student who’s been through Newhouse already.”

Though none of Tran’s five advisees share her major, she said she can still be there as a resource, and can always point them in the right direction. She said as a freshman, the most important thing is to use the resources given to you.

••• You’ve moved into your dorm. You’re attending your first floor meeting, and you find out your resident adviser is just a year or two older than you. They’re an authority figure, but they could still end up sitting next to you in statistics. That’s a little different from high school, and it might have you a bit freaked out.

Aside from Goon Squad members, an RA was probably the first person you met at Syracuse. Almost immediately one might have came by your door just to say hello.

Maybe it all seems a bit forced from someone you just met, but Devin Nonnenman, an RA on the Mount Olympus Complex living on the floor 8 of Day Hall, said they’re only trying to help.

“An RA isn’t a forced friend, an RA is your first friend,” Nonnenman said. ”If you want to use them, they’re there for you.

They’ll know your name, they’ll know what you’re into.”

Nonnenman said it’s a good idea to get to know your RA a bit too. You don’t have to be best friends, but at least the basics will enable you to keep them as a resource in your back pocket.

“It’ll be surprising when you’ll need them and then they’ll be able to help you,” Nonnenman said. “If you reach out to them before you have problems, it’s going to make it a little easier on you if problems do arise.”

Works by the philosophers of Ancient Greece are required reading before rush. All brothers and sisters speak in fluent Greek to protect chapter secrets. Members drink nothing but red wine, especially when they all go to the baths together. Know your stuff, or it’ll be all Greek to you.

5. Otto is inescapable He might not know who you are. He might not know where you’re from. But he will find you, and he will high-five you.

6. You can always find a party by following the North Star And you can always find yourself by following your heart.

7. The fastest and most popular way to get across campus?

Rollerblades Followed by Razor scooters and Ripstiks.

But so help me God, if I see anyone riding on a hoverboard, I will personally have Otto find you and teach your ridiculous self a lesson in proper transportation. It doesn’t hover, therefore it is not a hoverboard. Also, you just look so incredibly stupid going 5 mph on that thing when you

8. Be yourself Or, alternatively, change literally everything about yourself. Completely reinvent every aspect of who you are. Change your name. Change your hair. Cut off all relationships from your past and leave the old you behind. Call yourself Hannah Montana and pursue a successful music career. Welcome to college — it’s the climb.

9. Only skip the classes you don’t want to do well in You’ll have more time to count the money you’re wasting.

10. Call your parents Unless you pulled the Hannah Montana move, just give them a call. They sent you here. They care. Just do it.

Nonnenman said it’s not just any job —both parties can really benefit from getting to know each other. Just spending a little bit of time together, like at a floor program, can open up new comfort zones.

Nonnenman, who worked last year as an RA in Lawrinson Hall, said one his residents became an RA herself.

“Your role is making them feel welcome and making them feel like they are a member,” he said. “It’s a role that can push them to feel comfortable stepping out of their boundaries.”

Here today, gone tomorrow: past freshman traditions

Shouts of “tip it frosh,” echoed across the SU campus. Beginning in 1893, freshmen were made to wear beanies during their first semester, as per the student handbook.

The soft orange hats made first year students stand out while walking through campus, possibly one of the only positive attributes of the tradition.

Freshmen were required to tip their hats to older students, among other tasks and requirements, according to the SU Archives. The hat implicated a requirement to hold doors for their “lofty peers, the upper classes.”

Use of the beanie was strictly enforced.

Members of the Goon Squad made sure that no freshman was seen without their beanie.

Failure to sport the hat lead to public humiliation at the Penn State pep rally.

In 1964, freshmen began burning their beanies at the end of the year. Within a decade, the era of the beanie was over, according to the archives.

New students arriving to the Syracuse University campus are experiencing a lot of firsts. Settling into a strange place, leaving pets behind and getting used to that lingering smell in the dorm bathrooms are just a few of them.

Meanwhile, older students are preparing to welcome the freshmen. There are orientation leaders in orange polos, goon squad members pushing giant grey carts and resident advisers smiling while pinning cute and informative decorations to a bulletin board.

These events happen every year, and while some traditions last the test of time, others change or fade away completely. Here are just some of the ordeals freshmen have had to survive in the past and some that still live on.

Goon Squad

They greet your parents with a large grin, they wheel an impossibly large cart of your clothes and room decor upstairs, they remind you that, “no, you may not keep your dog in your dorm.”

Today, the Goon Squad acts as an official welcome crew, helping freshmen move into their new home. But in the past they had many more responsibilities, according to the SU Archives.

Goons would leads cheers at football games and put on an annual Goon Show in addition to acting as the move-in crew, all while wearing large straw hats and Jiminy Cricket buttons.

Although the group was originally limited to sophomores, it now also welcomes the help of juniors and seniors.

One other responsibility of the Goons of the past was to ensure all freshmen sported their beanies. If a freshman was spotted without one, they were subject to hazing and public humiliation.

The Goon Squad of today, fortunately, will not shout at the incoming students or throw anything their way other than a smile and some advice.

Today, the word “rush” evokes scenes of sorority girls and frat boys milling around campus in huge flocks, discussing bids and Greek letters in pretty much every combination. In the early 1900s, however, it meant something a lot different.

“Salting,” a tradition that originated at Genesee College, describes when sophomores would sprinkle salt onto freshmen benches in the chapel. The idea was “to take the freshness out of the first year men,” according to the SU archives.

The tradition quickly evolved upon its arrival on the SU campus, with sophomores throwing the salt at freshmen and rubbing it into their hair. The first rush was held in 1875, according to a Syracuse Post Standard article published in 1941.

The salt rush led to the emergence of a number of other rushes, including cane, flour, orange and snow.

The salt rush was cancelled in 1916 and was officially placed on hold during World War I. In 1941, the rivalry between the sophomores and freshmen led to injury during the rush and the tradition died out.

Freshman floormates, three years later: where they are now

lot of things about college are really strange and really exciting and really petrifying —t he first being living in very close quarters with 20-40 people who you previously did not know existed.

You’ll get to know these people incredibly well over the next few months. Probably more than you ever would have liked to in most cases. There will be a host of awkward interactions with them that you will cherish for years: in the dining hall, in the lounge and in the bathroom — especially the bathroom. You have the distinct privilege of watching the beginning of a particular group of incompetent weirdos learn and grow and come into their own over the course of a year, or even the next four years.

To save you the trouble of waiting, I am here to tell you exactly where your freshman floor will be going into your senior year of college.

The Girl from Los Angeles Who is Too Cool to Be Your Friend She will run a semi-famous Instagram account for food pictures, all of which are prettier than you are. Projections indicate

she will choose havarti cheese to be the next “trendy food.” She might end up modeling on the side as well. You’ll be acutely aware of this by the multitude of Instagram photos using the hashtag #model. And yes, she’s going to write a semi-successful screenplay as well.

Mr. 420BlazeIt Who Probably Gave You Your First Hit of Weed and Laughed While You Coughed for Five Minutes He will get into a great grad school program and do something genuinely good with his life. Throughout college, he will be known as The Guy Who Never Turns Down A Smoke Sesh, and always provides some great music that is way cooler than anything on your Discover Weekly playlist. The best guy you’ve ever and will ever meet.

The Girl Who Joined Every Club She will have a really great internship in

the city the summer before senior year, and her boss will be so blown away by her almost robotic work ethic they will offer her a full-time position after graduation. She will continue to go running everyday at 6 a.m. despite staying up until 2 a.m. actually doing the readings for class. Will one day kill her husband.

OD Orange Fan He will end up being president of Otto’s Army. He’ll have a picture of him throwing up a “Number One” next to two seriousfaced basketball players on his mantle next to empty decorative handles of alcohol in his house on Sumner. He will turn on the Alma Mater when he needs a good cry.

The Guy Who Moved In Wearing a Button Down and Boat Shoes He will drop out of school to focus on his passion for volunteer work. It definitely won’t be related to failing out of his classes. And it definitely will not be related to his frat.

Everybody from New Jersey They will still be talking about what exit they live at on the parkway and whether it’s Taylor Ham or Pork Roll. For the record,

exit 63, it’s Pork Roll and central New Jersey does not exist.

The Girl Who Vomited the First Night After she writes her three-page essay to the Department of Student Affairs discussing the dangers of alcohol, she will continue to spend a lot of nights similar to this one.

Honestly, she’ll probably become an alcoholic— but a functional one, so it won’t be a problem she deals with for another few years. Hey, you aren’t an alcoholic until after college, right?

Your RA – Will still be underappreciated.

Needless to say, you won’t talk to any of these people regularly in three years. But when you see them at Chuck’s, be sure to buy them a drink and wish you could go back and do those four years all over again.

PUT IT ON MY CARD Lots of people use SuperFOOD to pay for snacks or meals in-between classes in various on campus dining centers like Schine Dining and cafe’s like food. com. SuperFOOD is the life and blood that keeps so many students alive between classes. Basically, it’s a declining debit balance on your SU ID that allows you to pay for food in non-dining hall campus eateries.

DINING HALLS There are 5 residential dining halls on campus: Brockway, Sadler, Graham, Shaw and Ernie. They all serve pretty much the same food, but some of them are better than others. Here’s the breakdown:

Sadler: This dining hall is consistently average. The food is never terrible, but never great either. They have a burger station, a pizza station, a stir fry station, a salad bar, both self-serve and made-to-order sandwich stations, as well as daily entrees. Sadler basically has everything you need, but on a smaller scale as compared to Ernie or Shaw.

Ernie: Ernie is by far the busiest of all the dining halls as it’s most central to campus and serves residents from not only Ernie, but Watson, DellPlain, Booth, and any other students who may be in the area. It’s big and has a lot of options. Their salad bar has pretty much every reasonable option for a salad bar and changes its selection to some degree. They also have all the food options that Sadler has, but on a scale that can cater to a significant portion of the student body.

Pro tip: Ernie puts out a jar of Nutella near the fruit station from time to time.

Brockway: Brockway is the dining hall that serves Brockway, Brewster and Boland Halls. It’s on the smaller side, but still offers most of the same selection that the other dining halls do. Perhaps Brockway’s best feature is the large windows that surround the cafeteria space; the panoramic view is pretty nice.

Shaw: Shaw is not one of the most popular dining halls, as it only serves a small part of campus. However, if you are willing to make the trip over, it will become a favorite as the food is always good and there are plenty of options. The fact that it is never too busy is also a plus, because the quiet environment is perfect for reading through a textbook or doing some last-minute studying while you grab a bite to eat.

Pro tip: Shaw is the only dining hall on campus with Honey Nut Cheerios.

Graham: Graham serves the residents of Mount Olympus. Its biggest plus by far is the tunnel that connects it to both Flint and Day Halls. The underground passageway might sound unnecessary at this stage of the year, but just wait until winter when you won’t be taking it for granted.

Pro tip: Sometimes they have snack bar legends like mozzarella sticks and fiery chicken tenders, which could be overflow from the Junction, a snack bar found under Graham.

2. WOMEN’S BUILDING The Women’s Building is a multi-use facility at the edge of main campus off Comstock Avenue.

It’s main gym is home to the Orange volleyball team. Fans can sit on pull-out bleachers to the side of the court or in a small balcony overlooking the court. To get there from main campus you can walk or get off at the first bus stop on any bus heading toward South Campus.

1. CARRIER DOME The Carrier Dome, which opened in 1980, is home to five of Syracuse’s sports (football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse) and is located to the southwest of Hendrick’s Chapel and the Physics Building.

Nicknamed the “Loud House,” the Dome holds an on-campus attendance record of 35,446 for a men’s basketball game. Student season-ticket holders must enter through Gate E (gate nearest the Quad) despite the student section being located on the opposite side of the stadium.

Johnny Oliver, the president of Syracuse’s student section, Otto’s Army, spoke with The Daily Orange about what freshmen can expect at games, changes to the student section and Syracuse’s true rival.

The following is edited for clarity.

The Daily Orange: What should freshmen know about attending Syracuse football and men’s basketball games?

Johnny Oliver: Attending a Syracuse game is special because it’s in a dome, especially for football. And the Carrier Dome doesn’t hold as many people as other football stadiums do, but we have a roof on top of it. So even though our crowd numbers can be relatively small (compared) to other stadiums, if we get people in there and if people cheer, that noise has nowhere to go and the Dome gets loud when people are cheering.

The D.O.: What should freshmen know about Otto’s Army?

J.O.: What we’ve been trying to do the past two years is let people know that we’re not just whoever shows up early to the game, but that we do other stuff, too.

For instance, we’re going to have our flag football tournament this year. We always donate the money to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation. We are also kind of a liaison between Syracuse Athletics and the student body. This year the student section isn’t going to be the exact same as football

games in the past because the band is going to change locations a little bit. SU Athletics came to us and had the idea and they wouldn’t really have gone forth with it if we had said, “Well, we really like the student section where it is.”

The D.O.: So where is the student section this year?

J.O.: It’s going to change a little bit. The band used to be right behind the end zone.

They’re now moving toward the corner of the student section. Now more of the student overflow will be where the band was.

It’s kind of like the band will be flanked by the student section a little bit.

The D.O.: Which program should current SU students and incoming freshmen consider their biggest rival and be more excited to see this year: Duke or Georgetown?

J.O.: I’d be most excited for the students to see the Georgetown rivalry game.

Although Duke really has been the flavor of the week recently for Syracuse, I mean if you want to go to the rich history. After the last game at Manley Field House (1980) when we lost to Georgetown,

John Thompson, Georgetown’s coach, famously said “Manley Field House is officially closed.” You can’t erase that history.

Unless someone is a fifth-year student or a grad student, no Syracuse student has seen Georgetown play in the Dome. Once the bad blood gets going again, I’m very excited for that to be there.

The D.O.: How do you think last year’s “Dress like Coach Boeheim” night went and what other events do you have planned?

J.O.: I think it went great. This year, I would love for us to celebrate what will be Jim Boeheim’s 1000th win, and the NCAA be damned. Because they’re not going to recognize it, the school can’t recognize it, but if students show up with signs congratulating Boeheim, then to my knowledge, we can’t get in trouble. The one huge drawback is that 1000th win is probably going to happen when we’re on winter break, but I would still like for us to see something.

The D.O.: With punter Riley Dixon gone, whom is Otto’s Army endorsing as the SU Heisman trophy candidate?

J.O.: (Laughs) Oh man, I don’t know if there is anybody. If I had to pick an early candidate to fill the fan-favorite role, I think it would definitely be (sophomore quarterback) Eric Dungey. I think he endears himself to the crowd by the way he plays. Sometimes he probably gets hit a little harder than you want your starting quarterback to get hit. CARMELO ANTHONY POSITION: Forward • TEAM: USA Men’s Basketball Anthony won his record third gold medal, the most for any men’s basketball player. He scored 12.1 points per game and averaged 5.3 rebounds per game. He’s now the USA Basketball record holder in points, rebounds and games played.

MICHAEL GBINIJE POSITION: Guard • TEAM: Nigeria Men’s Basketball Gbinije averaged five points, two assists and three rebounds per game for Nigeria in the team’s five games. Nigeria didn’t advance out of group play, winning just one game, which came against Croatia.

NATALIE MASTRACCI POSITION: Coxed Eight • TEAM: Canada Women’s Rowing Mastracci participated in her second Olympics on the Canadian women’s eight, this time finishing fifth in the competition with a time of 6:06.04. She helped Canada win a silver medal in London in 2012.

ALYSSA MANLEY POSITION: Screen • TEAM: USA Women’s Field Hockey Manley, the 2015 Honda Award Winner, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and national champion, saw significant minutes as a substitute on the national team, playing between 20 and 40 minutes in each of USA’s six games. The U.S. went 4-2 and lost to Germany in the quarterfinals.

KATIE ZAFERES POSITION: Triathlete • TEAM: USA Zaferes finished the 0.93-mile swim, 24.8-mile bicycle ride and 6.2-mile run in 2:00:55, good for 18th place and about four minutes slower than the top time. The 2012 Syracuse graduate broke several school records as an Orange, including in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the indoor 5,000-meter run.

UHUNOMA OSAZUWA POSITION: Heptathlete • TEAM: Nigeria Women’s Track & Field Osazuwa competed in the shot put, long jump, 200- and 800-meter dashes and the javelin throw. In her junior and senior years at SU, 2009 and 2010, Osazuwa placed first in the Big East in the heptathlon. She also represented Nigeria at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
