Flint Hall housekeeper connects with students

Medina Aboui considers herself to be a mother of the first-year student body at Syracuse University.

While Aboui is kept busy with her daily operations as a housekeeper in Flint Hall, she finds pleasure in interacting with new students as much as possible, especially when it’s close to exam time.

“I know these kids one by one,” Aboui said. “When exam time comes, I tell them, ‘It’s going to be okay, you’ll get through it.’”

Aboui connected quickly with the first-year students this year when she attended the annual “Citrus in the City” — an event where the new students enjoy music, entertainment and food from local vendors in downtown Syracuse.

“I thought,‘They, my kids, they playin’,’” Aboui said, as she recalled the event with a smile.

The opportunity to be with the students as they explored the city was a long-needed break from the hectic events that came along with the initial move-in this year.

“It’s the hardest part of the job,” Aboui said, “and every year it’s the same.”

From breaking down mountain piles of trash to cleaning up the aftermath of the first week at SU, Aboui was kept busier than ever. Yet, she said she considers herself lucky to have ended up here at SU after a long and difficult transition from one side of the world to the other.

Originally from South Sudan, Aboui moved to Egypt 14 years ago before arriving in Syracuse two years later as a refugee. Unable to speak English for the first few years of her working career, Aboui became accustomed to using her body language to convey messages.

“If I need it, I have to point it,” she said.

But now, after having taken classes at a refugee school, Aboui is able to enjoy long and meaningful conversations with the many students she looks after in Flint.

Said Aboui: “Every floor, I have my kids. I see them now, I joke with them and then I see them grow — it’s the best part of my job.” jlnich02@syr.edu

Trans* activist Laverne Cox to speak at SU

“Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox will be coming to Syracuse University as the keynote speaker for the LGBT Resource Center’s Coming Out Month on October 29.

Coming Out Month is the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center’s month-long celebration of support for the LGBT community.

Previous keynote speakers include Emi Koyama of eminism.org and Kenyon Farrow,

the former executive director of Queers for Economic Justice.

Cox has gained recognition and

acclaim for playing Sophia Burset, a trans* inmate and hairdresser, on the hit Netflix program “Orange is the New Black” and for being the first openly trans* actor nominated for an Emmy. She is also the first trans* woman to appear on the VH1 show, “I Wanna Work for Diddy.”

Off-screen, Cox is an activist and advocate for trans* issues. She was named one of Out Magazine’s “Out 100” and the Huffington Post named her one of the top 50 trans* icons.

Chase Catalano, director of the LGBT Resource Center, said in

an email that Cox is an exciting speaker whose pop culture appeal will allow the center to reach a wider audience.

“We chose Laverne Cox as our keynote for her inspiring insights on justice and community building,” he said. “We believe Ms. Cox will be a speaker who will encourage more students to engage in conversations about marginalized genders and sexualities at SU and help continue to transform our campus into a more inclusive space.”

Bookstore offers online price comparison tool

Students now have access to automatic textbook price comparisons when they go to the Syracuse Uni-

versity Bookstore’s website to buy or rent textbooks.

Offered for the first time this semester, the price comparison feature provides more buying options through popular websites like Ama-

zon.com and allows students to shop competitively for their textbooks.

Kathleen Bradley, the text and general book division manager, has worked at the bookstore for more than 20 years and said this new fea-

ture has been in the works for the past six months.

Syracuse launches parking app

Students and commuters in downtown Syracuse can use a new mobile app to pay for 280 parking stations.

Mobile users can access the new app Whoosh! which allows people to remotely manage and pay for parking on their smartphones.

Whoosh! is available for free download on any iOS or Android device. Users make a free account, sign in and use their camera to identify vehicles and spots.

Motorists can use credit cards to remotely pay for their parking, and in addition, the app will notify them when their time on the meter is running out and allow see parking page 4

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner addressed reporters on Aug. 19 to discuss the 90 parking stations currently online in downtown Syracuse. The parking stations are located from S. Salina Street to Armory Square, and from Armory Square to Willow Street. Hundreds more will soon follow.

Alex Marion, the mayor’s press secretary, said in an email that the mayor’s office anticipates rolling out the parking app to all pay stations citywide in the future.

“So far the process has gone smoothly and we expect it to continue.” Marion said.

Marion added that the Whoosh! system in the city’s streets opens up new possibilities in terms of urban parking.

“The goal of this is really to make the parking payment process simpler and more convenient for those traveling to Syracuse’s business districts and we look forward to the opportunity to expand convenient options for drivers to enjoy downtown,” he said.

Jeffrey Kurkjian, a senior broadcast digital journalism and political science dual major, said he was impressed with the convenience of the parking app.

“It’s a cool app. I used it recently to extend

In addition, DPS pulled stats for all of 2013 to look at the calls they received from BBB. “It’s usually injury calls, illness calls, maybe a larceny call, but there really hasn’t been the type of calls where it’s non-affiliated people getting into the building,” she said.

Bill Longcore, associate director in the Office of Residence Life, said eliminating the 24-hour staffing policy had come up in discussions with DPS in the past, but this year they decided to enact the new policy. There were several things that have changed over the last 10 years that influenced the decision, he said.

One example is the many closed-circuit television cameras on campus that are installed at all residence halls, which monitor main entries, public areas on campus and pedestrian

Syracuse is not the only city using apps to make parking more convenient though.

The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) announced on Aug. 4 that the downtown area of the Fort Myers River District in Florida would be using the PassportParking Mobile Payment app. This app functions nearly identically to Whoosh!, allowing users to pay for their parking online in certain areas, according to an article from ABC-7 news.

Chicago is also using an app similar to Whoosh!. The city began implementing its payfor-parking app, ParkChicago on April 15 and continued the full rollout to all 36,000 parking spots over the summer, according to an article from the Chicago Tribune.

Kurkjian said that Whoosh! is also being used in some notoriously automobile-congested areas such as Washington D.C., where Kurkjian is originally from.

“Honestly, I think it’s exciting that stuff like this is spreading and being used in more places,” he said. “Everyone is walking around with smartphones in their pockets, so why not make more things accessible to them? It’s an exciting time in regards to the intersection of new technology and society.” tjbeckle@syr.edu

“We feel we have really good coverage and an understanding of traffic that comes into and out of residence halls,” Longcore said.

Another factor that has changed is the surrounding area of the residence hall complex, Longcore said. Campus West apartments, additional parking and the opening of the new College of Law building have all made the surrounding area more populated.

“It no longer has the perception of isolation it had a number of years ago,” he said.

Longcore said residence life staff that has worked in the building in previous years thought making the change was a good decision, saying there was really no reason to have RSAs in the building 24 hours a day.

Lentz added that it was a decision that all parties involved agreed upon and DPS hasn’t received any concerns or questions about the new procedure.

SU-themed clothing line to close web store on Aug. 30

Syracuse University-themed clothing line Syracutie will no longer be available for purchase online and two area stores have said they may also stop selling the brand.

The clothing line was created by SU graduate Alyson Shontell, who announced she’ll stop selling the clothing in her online store on Aug. 30.

“In our heart of hearts, we know a clothing business based on ‘Syracutie’ alone is a tough one to run. After a lot of soul searching and an acquisition of our trademark, we’ve decided to close up our online shop,” Shontell said in an email to customers.

Gale Youmell, the divisional merchandise manager at the SU Bookstore, said in an email that she will probably not continue to sell Syracutie clothes, saying “it would not allow me the chance to reorder and would be a disadvantage for my customers.”

But Youmell said Syracutie was a good addition to the bookstore’s clothing options.

“I am constantly looking for new and different designs; especially for my ladies wear area,” she said. “The Syracutie design was a catchy and fit in well in my assortment.”

Shirt World on Marshall Street also offers Syracutie clothing, but was unable to comment on whether they would continue to sell the products after the website is discontinued.

Shontell declined to comment further, saying that she had said everything in her announcement to clients.

Syracutie offers onesies for infants, as well as t-shirts, sweat jackets and yoga pants for women. The website is offering 50 percent off all items to customers with the promotional code “THANKYOU.”

In the past, Bradley said they simply didn’t have the technology available to offer a price comparison feature. Now that technicians have set the new option up for the bookstore, SU students are able to potentially save money on textbook purchases, she said.

The purpose of the website’s new feature is to expand upon the textbook selection offered through SU’s bookstore and to make purchasing textbooks as inexpensive as possible , she said.

“Sometimes students see the Syracuse University Bookstore as really expensive, but it’s almost always the book itself that is pricey, which is usually due to custom printing,” Bradley said. “However, we try our absolute best to offer the lowest prices to our students, which is one of the reasons why we’ve worked so hard to provide a price comparison feature.”

Klaire Moller, a sophomore majoring in psychology, said that she wasn’t aware of the new feature, but she would definitely use it when she purchases her textbooks.

“I never thought about comparing the prices of my textbooks, so the fact that the

Shontell published an article depicting her struggle with SU on the website Business Insider, where she is an editor. In the article Shontell explains how the university’s power prevented her from selling her clothes at other stores in the area. She even avoided using the colors orange and blue for fear of how SU might retaliate.

Shontell reported that she had already made some money selling her clothes online, but would be far more successful using the bookstore.

Syracuse lawyer Matt Van Rynn saw the article and offered Shontell legal help on the matter.

Sixteen months later she signed an agreement with the university and the bookstore began to sell a Syracutie crew neck and V-neck.

In her email to customers, Shontell thanked clients for their dedication.

Lan Pham, a junior mechanical engineering major, was aware of the new price comparison tool and plans on utilizing it when she purchases her textbooks.

The bookstore’s website makes it easy to find the right textbooks for specific classes, Pham said, adding that the price comparison is useful when certain books are especially expensive.

Bradley added that the bookstore has received positive student feedback so far, and plans on continuing to use the price comparison feature in upcoming semesters.

“This new feature — it’s competitive, but it’s also transparent,” Bradley said.

The bookstore is competitive in finding the best prices for students and the new price comparison tool allows them to be transparent about the prices offered at the bookstore and through other outlets, Bradley said. Ultimately, she said, the new feature is designed to benefit students.

Pay to Play Syracuse earns competitive grant for universal pre-K programs

yracuse City School District will receive a grant of nearly $1.7 million for universal full-day prekinderwgarten programs, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced in a statewide preliminary awards list.

The awards list was announced on Aug. 18.

Syracuse was seeking a $3 million grant, but received $1,682,448 in funds. The grants are still pending the approval of the state comptroller.

Several of the pre-K programs in Syracuse are funded by the government through the Early Head Start program.

PEACE, Inc., is an EHS program in Onondaga County that helps children ages three to five achieve their potential by providing early childhood development, health, family services and other support to participants and their families, who are typically from lower

income backgrounds, according to the company’s website.

“Early Head Start at PEACE is solely government funded,” said Sharon Barrett, the PR and marketing director at Syracuse’s PEACE, Inc. The Syracuse EHS programs begin on Sept. 3 this year, she added.

Other Syracuse city schools with universal pre-K programs besides PEACE, Inc. are the Huntington School, Edward Smith School, H.W. Smith School and J.T. Roberts School, Barrett said.

There are 10,431 children under the age of three enrolled in EHS programs in New York, according to the website for Grow America Stronger, a national campaign devoted to improving the quality and priority of early childhood programs.

During the 2012-13 school year, the campaign said on its website that 45 percent of New York’s 4-year-olds were enrolled in the state-funded universal pre-K program, and

Schools across New York will be distributed a total of $340 million, of which $300 million will be allocated to New York City. Nine other central school districts will receive more than $5.5 million for pre-K classes during the coming school year.

School districts and community-based organizations applied for the pre-K grants, which were available as part of the state budget, in early July.

Only 84 of the state’s nearly 700 school districts, including New York City, applied for the funds, and 54 school districts were awarded grants, according to an article from capitalnewyork.com. Under the structure of the grant funding, districts have to pay for the program up front and wait almost a year before the district receives funding.

The press release added that the Syracuse City School District proposal included working collaboratively with partner agencies to increase the number of full-day pre-K seats.

The grant includes funding to reinforce “the vast system-wide health, social/emotional and language needs of students and families,” the press release said.

Obama’s low approval rating benefits GOP in midterm election

P

resident Obama’s approval rating has averaged 42 percent in his second term, according to the most recent Gallup Daily tracking from Aug. 25. Just a few weeks ago, President Obama’s approval rating was the lowest it had ever been, at 40 percent, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll from Aug., 5. With the midterm elections fast approaching, these low approval ratings will further propel the rising Republicans to take the Senate in November.

The GOP needs to take six seats away from the Democrats in order to win control of the Senate. Ten seats will be highly contested, including Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina and West Virginia.

On Aug. 4, FiveThirtyEight.com predicted that five out of the 10 competitive seats should swing Republican, including Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and West Virginia, while only three for the Democrats, including Colorado, Iowa and Michigan. With a tossup in right-leaning North Carolina, the six seat mark could easily be met.

With the President scoring so low with the American public, Republicans should have more than enough fodder to gain the necessary seats. Obama is losing with the American people on a variety of issues,

including the economy at 42 percent approval rating and foreign policy at a 36 percent approval rating. Along with these poor presidential numbers, 64 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the economy, 62 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with America’s role in the world and the American public prefers a Republican controlled Congress by a one point margin.

Recent history suggests that unpopular presidents severely hamper their party’s performance in midterm elections. Just look at 2010, when a Gallup Poll from Aug. 8 shows President Obama’s approval rating at 43 percent. The Republicans gained six seats in the Senate and 63 seats in the House of Representatives. Similarly, in 2006, according to a Gallup Poll from July 30 of that year, President George W. Bush had an approval rating of 40 percent, equal to Obama at the same time of his presidency. The GOP ended up losing six seats, giving the Democrats a 51-49 control of the Senate.

Some Democrats have tried to distance themselves from their party leader in order to

increase their chances of victory. For example, Alison Lundergran Grimes, the Democrat running against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky, is fully against Obama’s new Environmental Protection Agency regulations that severely hamper the coal production and could cost jobs. According to a June 2 “Washington Times” article, she stated that, “When I’m in the U.S. Senate, I will fiercely oppose the President’s attack on Kentucky’s coal industry because protecting our jobs will be my no. 1 priority.”

Despite Grimes’ efforts to disassociate herself with Obama, she is still losing to McConnell by a four point margin, according to a “CBS News/New York Times” poll released July 27. At the end of the day, Grimes represents the same party as the President in a red state. That situation will almost always be an uphill battle.

Similar to Grimes, Senator Mark Pryor, the incumbent from Arkansas, has distanced himself from President Obama as well. According to a politico.com article from Aug. 19, 2013, he has stated that, “I think that President Obama has, in some ways, what you would think of as a hard-left agenda in various ways, and that agenda is not popular in our state. And a lot of that agenda, I don’t support.” Despite trying to cut ties from Obama, a “CBS News/New

York Times” poll released July 27 shows Pryor at 45 percent, with the Republican challenger, Tom Cotton, leading at 49 percent.

Clearly, the main element of the 2014 midterm elections is Democrats trying to distance themselves from an unpopular president. If Republicans are successful in linking Senate Democrats with the failed agenda of Obama, then 2014 will be a great year for the GOP. Congress must formally acknowledge climate change as real issue

y Congress formally acknowledging climate change, the debate can be shifted from whether it actually exists, to how it can be best controlled. Climate change is a time sensitive issue and the longer our government fails to even acknowledge its existence, the harder it will be for future generations to correct the consequences of our current politicians defiant ignorance.

On July 28, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) blocked a resolution seeking to formally acknowledge climate change’s existence and its threat to the United States. Since then, there has been no further legislative discussion. On Sunday, The Washington Post ran an editorial board saying that, “The National debate on climate change has devolved.” This is an issue that needs to move forward, not backwards.

The issue of climate change has become increasingly politicized and has served as a divider between most Democrats and Republicans in Congress. Inhofe may be our nation’s most prominent and outspoken denier. A July

In response to Inhofe blocking the resolution, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) delivered an impassioned speech directly criticizing all climate change deniers. Whitehouse points out that the Dept. of Defense, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration all unanimously agree that climate change is a dire threat to our country and that steps must be taken to ensure the safety of our people. These entities are established to serve the public interest. Claims of collusion are preposterous.

Whitehouse is no stranger when it comes to publicly challenging climate change deniers.

saying that 53 percent of Republican voters under the age of 35 would call climate change deniers “ignorant,” “out of touch” or “crazy.”

It’s not as if our government has always had a partisan stance on our environment. The Environmental Protection Agency was formed under President Richard Nixon, as well as the Clean Air and Water Act, in 1970. Somewhere down the road, regulating our affect on our environment became a wedge issue, one that is currently endangering the lives of our generation and generations to come.

According to 2011 data from the PEW research center, 71 percent of millennials and 69 percent of Generation X believed that the United States should prioritize developing alternative energies rather than continuing to use current energy sources linked to climate change.

Young voters are gaining increasing power on this issue and soon it will be in the best interest of anti-climate change politicians to switch their stance. Unfortunately, votes are not the only thing politically valued right now.

To attempt to understand why an issue as straightforward as this is met with vehement opposition, it is best to follow the money. A May 8 Huffington Post article detailed how Wyoming, the nations leading coal producing state, is the first state to reject new K-12 science education standards. Republican Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead described them as inclusive of “global warming components.”

This is no coincidence.

Those who reject climate change represent states that financially benefit from existing industries. The problem is that these existing industries have deep pockets and a vested interest in continuing business as usual. The politicians who benefit from these industries, however, need to consider the bigger picture rather than short-term economic gain.

The longer our politicians fail to act, the more ground we will have to make up and, at a certain point, it will be too late.

SU should continue to improve dorm security It was a good decision for Syracuse University to review the necessity of 24-hour check-in at Brewster, Boland and Brockway halls, as it is better utilizing university resources. However, dorm safety should continue to be a priority throughout all residence halls.

This summer, the Office of Residence Life and the Office of Housing, Meal Plan and I.D. Card Services made the decision to end 24-hour check-in after meeting with the Department Public Safety during the summer.

The office found that BBB did not have any more activity during the day than other residence halls on campus.

Another factor in the decision was that the areas surrounding BBB are now more populated with parking garages and the law building. Cameras also now monitor the building’s main entries.

In addition to updating BBB security protocol, SU should continue to update security measures at all of the dorms on campus. Continuing to improve students’ safety in all residence halls should remain a high priority. The 24-hour check-in prevented potentially dangerous people from coming into students’ dorms during the day. Though BBB is on the edge of campus, so are residence halls such as Shaw, Ernie Davis and Sadler. If someone can enter BBB during the day unnoticed, they can do so at any residence hall — or any campus building.

SU should continue to review the security procedures on campus, which will save money and ensure employees are being efficiently utilized. But while reviewing what services are no longer necessary, student safety should continue to be as carefully examined.

Explore 44 extends SU orientation

Redhouse Arts Center engages community, announces new location

or the past decade, an unassuming three-story brick building on the corner of West Fayette and South West streets has been home to an ever-growing community of artists, all dedicated to improving the city of Syracuse through art.

This year marks the Redhouse Arts Center’s 10th anniversary, and the non-profit organization has begun to move from its original building into the old Sibley’s department store on Salina Street. Rachel Boucher, the center’s marketing director, said it is a great accomplishment.

“Redhouse started as a music venue and has morphed into a full performing arts center, which contributes to our huge growth,” Boucher said, in an email. “We were able to diversify our offerings to attract larger crowds.”

After a recent surge of success, the center’s original space can no longer meet its growing needs, according to a Redhouse presentation.

Since 2011, annual membership has grown from 35 to 500, average attendance has grown from 30 to 92 percent and full-time employment has grown from three to 24 employees.

Boucher believes that executive artistic director Stephen Svoboda’s idea to start educational

and community outreach programs has accounted for much of the center’s recent growth.

Svoboda, who is entering his fifth year with the Redhouse Arts Center, has shifted the center from being purely professional-based, to being a space that engages the community.

“We’re saying ‘Come participate in the creation of art. Come participate in watching what happens,’ and so we’ve built this entire education program that didn’t exist before that’s really fueled attendance and participation across the board,” Svoboda said.

For Svoboda, the mission of the Redhouse Arts Center is not to create art just for admiration, but to have a practical use and to use art as a tool for a greater reason.

“I think it’s important that art doesn’t play the role of art for art’s sake in the community,” he said. “I think art has a reason. There’s a reason we do art. It’s about understanding who we are as people — it’s about building connections.”

And by reaching out to the community, connections have been made. The Redhouse Arts Center now has partnerships with more than 50 businesses, and has an educational partnership with the Syracuse City School District.

Svoboda also believes in the idea of mentorship and apprenticeship. Michaela Geldmacher, a

For new students, finding out about the activities and opportunities offered at Syracuse University can be overwhelming, but this year they have 44 easy options.

Every year, new students receive a poster with ‘44 things to do at SU’ during Syracuse Welcome, the freshman orientation program. The Office of First-Year & Transfer Programs wanted to create something more concrete, so on Monday they launched Explore 44, a campaign with 44 days worth of activities in and around campus.

Lisa Chestney, the assistant director of the Office of First-Year & Transfer Programs said the idea for the campaign stemmed from a desire to help students after Syracuse Welcome ends.

“I think the strategy was to try to match as many things on the list of 44 to actual events going on campus,” Chestney said.

Freshman Steven Szachara was one of the nearly 150 people who got their picture taken with Otto on the campaign’s first day.

“Why not take a picture with Otto?” Szachara said, a systems and information science major.

Social media is the driving force behind the campaign. Carrie Abbott, the director of the Office of First-Year & Transfer Programs, said the high amount of Twitter followers they have would help them communicate with students.

Geldmacher said she had never experienced as much responsibility or opportunity in any of her prior work experience. She attended every rehearsal and performance at the center, keeping track of actors, props and sets.

“The Red House is really open to having people be involved and giving them responsibilities that you wouldn’t find other places, because they’re all about learning and they are definitely open to student involvement,” Geldmacher said.

What Geldmacher noticed most during her time at the Redhouse Arts Center was its dedication to the community. She said professional

and community actors worked side by side in productions and were both treated equally.

This community outreach will continue to grow as the Redhouse Arts Center moves into its new space in 2015. The move represents a new model for arts in the community, Svoboda said.

By partnering with for-profit developers, the Redhouse Arts Center will become part of a project to create a multipurpose space.

Svoboda said the center’s next goal is to raise $3 million dollars to build its own facilities.

“There’s a lot of interest because it’s not just an art place,” Svoboda said. “This is going to be responsible for a massive economic development of downtown, a transformation of that block.”

Once the move is complete, the larger facilities will generate more profits to create an endowment and become self-sustainable. The

center will use its excess money to support itself and other local arts organizations, Boucher said.

The Redhouse Arts Center will also continue to own and operate out of its original space, Svoboda said. He said they are leaning toward rebranding it Redhouse West, and using it as a music venue for local bands.

After a decade, the Redhouse Arts Center has learned from its growth and is committed to creating a strong arts community and a sense of vibrancy and excitement to downtown Syracuse.

Said Svoboda: “Think about Salina Street right now, and you walk by and it’s like depressing and it shows that the city’s dying in a way…

Said Chestney: “This is a great way to continue informing new students about different campus traditions and events.”

s the owner of four fashion boutiques, Amanda Gold is no stranger to fashion and popular trends. One of her boutiques, Jet Black, is located in the heart of Armory Square and features women’s clothing and accessories. The Daily Orange sat down with Gold to talk about Jet Black, her own personal style and this season’s most popular trends.

The Daily Orange: When did Jet Black open, and when did you start managing the store?

Amanda Gold: Jet Black has been open for upwards of 15 years, but I have worked for the company since April of 2009 and have owned the company since March of 2012.

The D.O.: Does the name ‘Jet Black’ have any significance?

A.G.: When Jet Black first opened everything in the store was actually black if you could believe that.

The D.O.: How did you know you wanted to work in fashion?

A.G.: I have always loved to shop — I don’t know many girls who don’t — but never really knew how I could turn that into a career.

When I started working for Joel Shapiro, the previous owner of Jet Black and owner of Mr. Shop, it was a perfect fit and the rest is history.

The D.O.: Do you have a favorite designer?

Do your clothes resemble any of his or her pieces?

A.G.: Depends on the day and my mood.

Sometimes I feel a little edgy and in an Alexander McQueen-kind-of-mood. Other times super girly and more Oscar de la Renta. Just depends how I’m feeling.

The D.O.: What trends have you seen this fall?

A.G.: One thing about retail is that there is no typical customer. One of the first things I learned is not to judge a book by its cover because you just never know. We obviously see more females than males, but that is because we are a women’s clothing store. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t see males, especially around the holidays, shopping for gifts for the women in their lives.

The D.O.: What are Jet Black’s most popular items right now?

Rebecca Taylor, and her clothing is doing very well for us. But in a more general sense, with school starting and fall and winter just around the corner, we have been selling a lot of denim, coats, sweaters and boots.

The D.O.: What would you say is the overall style of Jet Black?

A.G.: The style of Jet Black changes season to season. We have to keep up with the trends while still having casual and easy-to-wear styles.

The D.O.: Is there anything specific you are trying to feature through your boutique?

A.G.: Jet Black is one of the very few stores in the Syracuse area that features name brands and highend denim. We have styles to fit every lifestyle and need, and we have great accessories as well.

2015 commit Lindor works to fit Orange’s tight end mold

As the role of the Syracuse tight end expands, the recruiting specifications for the position do the opposite.

The SU coaching staff has detailed the qualities it looks for with the tight end’s transforming identity, mainly an athlete with the speed and size to take on various positions, including blocking out of the back field.

The only tight end or wide receiver that has committed to the Orange’s Class of 2015 thus far — Affton (Mo.) High School senior West Lindor — currently poses a dominant pass-catching and route-running threat. But in order to round out his game to contribute when he arrives at SU next year, he said that his speed and blocking need to be improved in his final high school season.

“If you have a tight end that can block for the run and also take off, the linebackers are going to have to have another thing on their mind besides just stopping the run,” Lindor said. “If a football team knows how to utilize the tight end, it can really benefit them.”

Ever since verbally pledging to the Orange on July 9, Lindor has been aware of the role he’s expected to play. He’s been working to fit that mold, one that running backs coach and Lindor’s main recruiter, DeAndre Smith, has been urging him to become.

Before he arrives next summer, Lindor says he’d like to refine his already potent speed, but most notably his pass- and run-blocking abilities.

“I’ve been improving on my blocking because I want to be ready for the next level,” Lindor said. “I need to learn how to block better, especially at the next level with bigger pass-rushers.”

To become even faster, Lindor said he and

his team will begin running sprints with resistance parachutes. He’ll also take longer runs to build up his endurance and lung capacity, vital for anyone hoping to play in Syracuse’s new no-huddle offense.

Scout.com lists the 6-foot-4.5, 215-pounder as having run a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, which is even better than what SU tight ends coach Bobby Acosta desires for the position.

“If we could get that big kid that could run a 4.6-4.7,” Acosta said, “he could do what the tight ends used to do here, blocking line and also be a pass receiver.”

In the new role, Lindor may also have to retreat as a fullback and protect in the run game.

Affton offensive tackle Davondre Love will be lining up next to Lindor for a fourth year this fall, and while he too said Lindor’s blocking can improve, he expects him to succeed with the Orange.

“He’s not the best run blocker, but for his position, I think he’s a pretty good run blocker,” Love said. “Tight ends can be some of the most dangerous players. They can help you with the run game and, of course, the passing game.

“I think he’ll be really good for Syracuse.”

Lindor is anxious to assume a role in the Orange’s transformed offense, as his game already partially fits the need for not just a tight end, but also a wide receiver.

“I would say that the tight end is a very underrated position,” Lindor said. “Most colleges have slowed down on that roll, but I think the tight end position is actually a very important role.”

Livers walked on with the Wildcats in 2011 and earned a scholarship after his sophomore year. As a junior in 2013, Livers led Villanova in receptions with 53 and receiving yards with 580. In the spring of 2014, Livers was voted as a co-captain by his teammates for his upcoming senior year at Villanova, which plays Syracuse this Friday, but he still approaches the game as if he’s being counted out.

“He plays with a very big chip on his shoulder,” Mann said. “He understands the fact of this size but he doesn’t let it mentally affect his performance. He feels as if he can compete with any athlete.”

Livers was raised by Belinda Solis, a single mother, and credits her for his learned fearlessness on and off the field. Both Livers and Solis say the other inspires them. Livers saw her come home from work, tired, before she made time to play ball with him in the yard.

one and a half years old. Livers started talking about playing professional football when he was 5.

When he was 10, 11 and 12 years old, he won three consecutive Punt, Pass and Kick competitions.

football and basketball at VFMA but left after one semester to live and train with Mann, a family friend, in Miami, Florida.

There, in the summer of 2011, Livers watched film of Wes Welker and Don Beebe to learn the nuances of his position. Mann had Livers box, do burpies, perform ladder drills and box jumps, run a mile and finally run routes without a break in between.

“It wasn’t really heavy weights because again you don’t have to be the strongest man on the field to make plays,” Livers said of the workouts with Mann. “You’ve got to be smart and you’ve got to know what you’re doing.

You’ve got to have a plan.”

His plans have made him one of the Wildcats’ most dangerous players.

As a slot receiver, Livers has carved out a role, utilizing his low center of gravity and agility to escape defenders with what Villanova wide receivers coach Brian Flinn calls “shortarea quickness.” Livers also said that with his size, he has to be a daredevil with running routes over the middle.

Sometimes, teammates have to remind him not to dive for balls in practice so he stays

healthy for games. His speed in a Tuesday practice is the same as it is on game day. For Livers, Villanova’s optional workouts are mandatory.

“We have this tennis ball machine that he’ll be out there before everyone shows up just catching tennis balls with one hand,” Villanova quarterback John Robertson said.

In both high school and college, Livers’ personality has helped him become a leader.

He drove 20 minutes out of his way to pick up St. Francis teammates for morning workouts and Miller said that he created a “concert-like atmosphere” with his vocals in the car.

At Villanova, he frequently organizes extra work with the wide receivers. Sometimes it’s staying after position meetings, watching film or sitting down one-on-one with a younger player to talk about route-running.

When Villanova takes on Syracuse on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome, Livers’ teammates will know who to look to.

“He’s upbeat, he never has a bad day, he never has bad body language,” Flinn said.

“He never rolls his eyes, never complains, he never takes a play off.”

Shafer said he told his players to make sure Villanova isn’t capitalizing on SU mistakes, but earning whatever yards it gets Friday.

“But we’re not going to take away from our aggressive style on defense, but I think Coach Bullough and the rest of the defensive staff — they have the boys ready to play.”

It’s just defense Villanova runs an offense in which it will leave a defensive tackle unblocked, Shafer said Saturday.

But the SU head coach said he isn’t talking to his players any differently this week. He just wants them to stay aggressive, recover from any unusual plays Villanova pulls off and stick to basic defensive principles like knocking opponents backward.

Livers goes from walk-on to offensive, locker room leader for Villanova

oppy Livers often knows what defenders across from him are thinking. Livers is 5 feet, 7 inches and weighs 168 pounds. He looks like an underdog, and for him, it makes the game more exciting.

He takes pleasure in outrunning someone bigger.

As he jukes out a defender, Livers sometimes cracks a quick smile, taking pride in proving him wrong.

Livers was barely recruited out of St. Francis (Calif.) High School. College scouts would take one look at him and think he was too small. If they looked at his 40-yard dash time — 4.47 seconds — they’d think he wasn’t fast enough to make up for lack of height.

“I just didn’t let it stop me from my dream,”

Livers said.

To get to Villanova, Livers had to turn discouragement into determination. He would wake up at 5:30 a.m. when he was at St. Francis to work out with quarterback Kyle Miller, sneak into the team’s weight room during the day without the school’s administration knowing and spend hours working with former NFL player Maurice

Austin Wilson is the No. 2 quarterback for Syracuse on Friday night, quarterbacks coach Tim Lester said Tuesday evening.

Wilson, a sophomore, was listed in the top backup spot alongside AJ Long when Syracuse released its two-deep depth chart Monday. But AUSTIN WILSON Lester said he won the position battle with a strong arm and improving footwork, maintaining that Long and Mitch Kimble will still get meaningful reps in practice.

“His feet are comfortable and things are starting to come out of his hand on time,” Lester said. “And everything last year, he could throw it, but it was just a second late. And he was really the first one of those three to relax and let his arm be a positive for him.”

Starting quarterback Terrel Hunt also spoke highly of Wilson’s development and he constantly pushes Wilson.

“I tell him that all the time. He says, ‘Going into camp last year I was fourth string, now I’m second string.’

As training camp winds down, classes begin and Syracuse’s first opponent looms, tensions are high on Scott Shafer’s team. And he likes it that way.
