How a potential 3-year housing requirement at SU compares to schools nationally

NVRC timeline detailed By Sam Ogozalek asst. news editor

Construction is expected to start on Syracuse University’s $62.5 million National Veterans Resource Complex by December or January, university officials announced Monday. The project’s anticipated completion date has now been pushed back to the spring 2020 semester. SU initially expected to finish NVRC construction by the spring or summer of 2019. Officials on Monday publically provided the first concrete timeline detailing NVRC construction since the project was announced in 2015. Mike Haynie, vice chancellor of strategic initiatives and innovation, said the NVRC will be open to students in spring 2020. Haynie and other high-ranking SU officials detailed NVRC plans at a public forum held near downtown Syracuse at the Syracuse Center of Excellence. A handful of residents attended the meeting. The NVRC will serve as a regional veterans community hub, housing see nvrc page 6

f Syracuse University implements a three-year on-campus housing requirement, it will be one of only a few universities in the country to require students to live in university-owned residences for more than two years. A Daily Orange analysis of the U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 Top National Universities list found only seven of the more than 100 schools studied had an on-campus residency requirement of three or four years. Most universities with the three-year requirement were SU peer institutions and/ or Atlantic Coast Conference schools. All were private. Many universities and some experts say there is a possible link between student academic performance and oncampus residency. “We have a fair amount of research indicating that living on campus can increase the likelihood that one will stay from firstyear to second-year and will also graduate,” said Kevin McClure, an assistant professor of higher education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Michele Wheatly, SU’s vice chancellor and provost, said at a public forum in Feb-

ruary the university was considering a three-year housing requirement. The latest Campus Framework draft, a 20-year infrastructure plan SU updated this summer, includes a proposal to build new dorms on Ostrom Avenue and convert the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center to student housing. SU has yet to decide whether they will require students to live in on-campus housing for three years or build new student housing. Currently, SU students are only required to live in university-owned housing — such as dorms and South Campus apartments — for two years. Duke University, Brown University, Georgetown University, Wake Forest University and George Washington University, at present, are the only colleges in the top 100 list that require students to live on campus for three years. Notre Dame will introduce a threeyear requirement next year, the South Bend Tribune reported last week. Vanderbilt University is the only school on the top 100 list to require on-campus housing for all four years. Four of the schools shifted to a threeyear housing requirement in the last seven years. see housing page 6

syracuse mayoral race 2017

Nicoletti drops out of election By Kennedy Rose asst. news editor

Joe Nicoletti, a mayoral candidate who lost last week’s Democratic primary, dropped out of the race Monday and endorsed Juanita Perez Williams for mayor of Syracuse. The common councilor said previously he would consider staying in the race as a Working Families Party candidate. The party endorsed him earlier this year. Perez Williams beat Nicoletti and city auditor Marty Masterpole in the Democratic primary last week. Both Nicoletti and Ken Warner, the upstate political director for the Working Families Party, endorsed Perez Williams at Monday’s press conference. Nicoletti said he will continue his work in public service as a private citizen in January. He did not
