Hello members,

Welcome to the winter issue of Talk of the Town.

We are now on the other side of an AGM and an election of the Board of Directors. I thank every member who participated in either event as your engagement and input into the future of your club is so crucial. From here, there will be an election every year as we commence our triennial elections, which is three Directors going up for election each year.

My congratulations go to our team of Directors who have returned to their roles, including our President Kay Kelly, Senior Vice President Terry O’Loughlin, Junior Vice President Jack Miller, Treasurer Gary Callaghan and Directors, George Vella, Murray Searle, Brett Fielding and Paul Hayes.

I would like to thank our outgoing Director, Ange Humphries, for her seven years of service. Ange has stood down to focus on her many other commitments, including her role as an elected Councillor with Parramatta City Council.

We are pleased to welcome your new Director, Liz Star. Liz will be a familiar face to many, having served as Entertainment Manager at Workers, and has been responsible for many of the iconic acts having performed in the Diamond Showroom for over 20 years.

Speaking of your President, Kay Kelly, it is my great pleasure to announce that Kay was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for her 50 years of service to Workers Lifestyle Group at the recent Clubs & Community Awards.

Kay has been nominated for the Club Person of the Year, a prestigious award that acknowledges Kay for going above and beyond to provide an extraordinary contribution to the community. Kay’s nomination recognised her for being a respected leader within the club industry and Blacktown community as well as forging the way as a female Club President and female business owner.

Rather than winning that award, our industry body ClubsNSW, deemed it appropriate to award her the Lifetime Achievement Award, an extremely exclusive award that has only been granted on several previous occasions. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Kay.

Kay, we couldn’t be prouder of this well-deserved award recognising you for your outstanding service to us and to your community.

Your club was also recognised for our work within the community. In the category of Health Care, we received the award that recognised your club for supporting and improving the physical health of the community through our ‘Western Sydney Changing Diabetes’ program.

This program, run in conjunction with Western Sydney Diabetes and Novo Nordisk, aims to defeat diabetes within the Blacktown region. In 2022, we committed $500,000 over five years to the cause, with Sisu Health stations, healthy cooking classes, diabetes detection program and healthy menu options some of the real-life ways that we are demonstrating our commitment to a healthier community.

We were finalists in many other categories including Arts & Culture for our Indigenous artwork program, Education for Creating Resilient Kids, Heart of the Community for our work with BYSA; and Mental & Social Wellbeing for our Domestic & Family Violence commitments. I thank the team of directors, managers and staff that make this possible.

Our annual CEO & CO Winter Sleep Out is coming up this June. Myself, our managers and staff, as well as your Directors, brave the cold to sleep rough in order to raise funds for a local organisation. This year we have selected Carevan Blacktown, in recognition of an organisation that is working on the front lines to support those in need in community, which is all the more important during this cost-of-living crisis. Turn to the back cover to find out how you can either register or donate. Any support is welcomed.

In other news, I’m pleased to report that Parkside Lifestyle Community continues to make progress. Currently we have a tender process underway to determine the building company that will construct the Seniors Living Development.

We are also very close to announcing the opening of the Parkside Sales Suite, which will be located just down the road from your club on Campbell Street. Those that have made expressions of interest will be able to see and touch all the options that will be available in their new home.

At Workers Blacktown, we are pleased to have been able to launch a new menu at Blue Gum Café in May, which has now been followed by a new menu at Hub Dining at Workers Hubertus. Chef Steve will soon be launching a new menu for Eucalyptus Dining after some works in the kitchen have been completed.

If you haven’t ventured up to level one at Workers Blacktown for a while, I encourage you to do so and check out our latest entertainment offering, Slice Virtual Golf. You don’t need to be a pro to play, it is a fun and interactive game for the family or a group of friends. Regular prices start from just $15 per hour and currently, if you book on a Wednesday, you can play for just $10!

Lastly, I pass on my condolences to those Members who have lost loved ones.

Please take care of yourselves and of each other and reach out to your Welfare Team, Harold and Tina, if needed. Your club is here to support you.

I look forward to seeing you around our Clubs.

Sincerely,

Chief Executive Officer Workers Lifestyle Group

Workers Lifestyle Group has been recognised in the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Awards for its ground-breaking Western Sydney Changing Diabetes campaign and the stalwart community service of President Kay Kelly.

Kay Kelly has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her 50 years of exceptional service to Workers Lifestyle Group (previously Blacktown Workers Club) and the Blacktown community.

“Kay has been President since 2008, a director for 28 years, and a member since 1976, three years after she joined the staff of Workers Blacktown, and she has volunteered more than 5,000 hours of work,” said Workers Lifestyle Group CEO Morgan Stewart.

“She ran her own business for 35 years, raised a family and advanced the role of women in the club’s industry.

“During Kay’s leadership, we have transformed, in contributions to the community, in services to our members and in supporting our staff.”

Western Sydney Changing Diabetes, launched in December, won the Health Care category of the Awards.

Morgan said Workers Lifestyle Group’s community service ethos is clear from Western Sydney Changing Diabetes, a campaign to counter the epidemic of type 2 diabetes now challenging Western Sydney.

Developed in collaboration launched in collaboration with Western Sydney Diabetes and Novo Nordisk, the campaign aims to boost diabetes awareness, detection and prevention.

“We contribute $500,000 over five years to the campaign and we have free health testing stations, healthy menu options and a healthy lifestyle approach at Workers Blacktown and Workers Sports.

“We have given millions to community causes, directly and through ClubGRANTS – this is what community engagement means for our group.”

Workers Lifestyle Group was also Clubs and Community Awards finalist in categories of Arts & Culture (for Recognising Blacktown with a RAP and also TDP Graduate Makes a Splash on the International Music Scene); Education (Workers Creating Resilient Kids); Heart of the Community (BYSA Sustainability in Action); and Mental & Social Wellbeing (Prevent the Cycle of Domestic & Family Violence)

Workers Lifestyle Group is a member-owned group that operates Workers Blacktown and Workers Sport clubs in Blacktown, Workers Hubertus in Luddenham and the soon to be developed Parkside Lifestyle Community.

Golf has long been a sport that brings people together, providing a perfect blend of competition, relaxation, and camaraderie. While hitting the greens and fairways of a real golf course has its charm, virtual golf allows families and friends to experience the joy of golf in a unique and exciting way. Virtual golf brings the game indoors, allowing players to tee off in simulated environments that replicate famous courses from around the world.

Thanks to advanced graphics and sensor technology, the experience is incredibly realistic, providing a thrilling alternative to traditional golfing. The best part? You don't need to be an expert golfer to enjoy virtual golf. It's accessible to players of all skill levels, making it an inclusive activity for everyone.

To elevate the fun factor, add some delicious treats to the mix. Picture this: you and your loved ones taking turns swinging the club, cheering each other on, and savouring refreshing cocktails and mouth-watering pizzas. Whether it's a classic margherita, a meat lover's pizza, or a vegetarian option, pizzas are an ideal choice for a casual and social setting. Pair them with a selection of beers, wines, or signature cocktails, and you've got the perfect combination for an enjoyable activity.

Virtual golf with family and friends is a fantastic way to spend quality time together, fostering friendly competition, laughter, and shared memories. It's a social activity that breaks the mould of traditional indoor gatherings, offering a unique and immersive experience. So, gather your loved ones, fire up the virtual golf simulator, and let the fun, cocktails and pizzas take your golfing adventure to new heights.

Workers Lifestyle Group is continuing to develop our (Reflect) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

We are currently working with a number of Elders and key community partners to develop our program.
