PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello Members, Another year has passed so quickly and we are now in 2017. On behalf of the Board, Staff and Management I would like to wish you a Very Happy, Safe, Healthy and Prosperous New Year where we can all come together for friendship and to enjoy our life. I am so pleased that you are here again in 2017 to enjoy another year full of social gatherings, entertainment, promotions and fun. We as a Board are aware there will be challenges ahead. We always try to make decisions for the benefit of our members and the ongoing future of the Club, and I feel that if we continue to have the support of the members, this Club will always be an icon supporting and assisting our members and the community and the Workers brand will stand proud. I do get the opportunity to attend many of our Sporting Body presentations which is great as it gives the Directors the opportunity to participate in their social event and acknowledge their success. I attended the Small Boats Presentation prior to Christmas. It was a great evening with a good crowd. This is something all the family seem to join in and enjoy, well done. New seasons of Sporting Body activities start all over again and I thank the members who work so hard on these committees to keep them running so successfully. Good luck to all teams in 2017. Our White Ribbon Charity Breakfast was held again at the Club in late November with over 550 guests attending. Many Special guests attended including Premier Mike Baird, Police Commissioner Andrew Scippione, Blacktown State Labour Representative John Robinson, Blacktown Deputy Mayor Tony Bleasdale and Neil Bare the CEO of Manly Warringah Rugby League. Also in attendance were TV personalities Andrew O’Keefe, Sarah Ferguson and Simon Bouda. We heard many moving stories which bought tears to our eyes, particularly when the boys from Bankstown Public School performed a song that sent out a strong message regarding domestic violence and included the line “you can be angry but still be a gentleman” very simple but puts the message out there.

Thank you to all the staff that put in a little extra to make your visit to the Club more enjoyable, it is greatly appreciated. I cannot close without thanking our Old Tin Shed, Foundation and 50 year members for the invaluable effort and support they have put into making our Club what it is today. We cannot forget it was their foresight to start the Club that gave us the foundations to build on and to keep adding to create what we have today and continue our dreams for the future. We all work together to make this happen and I thank my Board colleagues, Management and staff and of course you the members for continuing on this venture with us all. A special day was held in December to acknowledge and personally thank the early Pioneers and VIP’s (these members have given over 50 years of support to your Club). This day also gives them a chance to meet up with old friends and reminisce. It was great to have Life Member Les Bassett in attendance on the day. Apologies were received from Life Members Keith Queen, Shirley Carpenter and George Stewart who also contributed greatly to the success of our Club. Sadly George Stewart passed away on Sunday, 4 December 2016, my condolences to all the family. We are still working with Council and other organisations on the Sporting Precinct of Excellence and the Over 55’s Resort and Aged Care Facility and I will update you in my next report. My condolences to anyone who has lost loved ones and friends. This is a sad time for you and my words probably won’t make it better, but please take care. Until next time, Keep Smiling and be kind to each other

Kay Kelly President

Congratulations to Stephen Bali on his re-election as Mayor and to Kathie Collins on being re-elected as a Councillor of Blacktown City Council.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Hello Members; Happy New Year and welcome to 2017. I hope your 2017 is happy and prosperous. We are looking at an exciting new year for the club group with a lot of development works to take place that will diversify the clubs business model and ensure the long term viability of the club group. As you would all have seen, works on the installation of the new boom gate and ticketing system in the Main Club carpark are just about complete, and the 3 mth trial period will now take place with the system expected to become fully operational by the 2nd quarter of 2017. You will be able to ask our staff how the system will operate as they will be trained to advise both members and guests of what you will need to do when parking at the club. Watch out also for the extensive signage that will be placed both in numerous areas in the carpark and the club to assist you all. Nomination forms for the Board of Directors elections for 2017/18 will be available from Friday 3 February 2017 and nominations will close on Wednesday 22 February 2017 at 12 noon. The ballot draw for positions will take place on Thursday 23 February 2017. The election for the Board will take place from Thursday 23 March 2017 and close on Monday 27 March 2017. Hours for voting will be 10.00am to 7.00pm each day. Information on the Directors elections and the Annual General meeting will be placed at all 3 clubs in January. Members should note that as voted and approved under a special resolution at the 2016 Annual General Meeting that this year’s election and all future Directors elections will be for a 2 year period. The 2016 Annual Report will be available for all members prior to the Annual General Meeting, if members have any questions relating to this report they will be required to put their questions in writing to the General Manager at least 7 days prior to the AGM. I will have a more comprehensive report on the 2016 financial performance in the Annual Report itself. Please note the 2017 Annual General Meeting of Blacktown Workers Club Ltd will take place on Sunday 2 April commencing at 9.00am in the Diamond Showroom at Blacktown Workers Club 55 Campbell St Blacktown. Again we will be having a great array of promotions, raffles and event for all members throughout the year, look in our journals and on our website for all upcoming events and promotions. I am happy to say that the first Development application for the bulk earthworks for our new Sporting Fields on our land adjacent to Walters Rd was lodged with council in late 2016, we hope to have a favourable response early 2017 to enable commencement of works.

The DA for the grandstands and other facilities is due to follow. Works on the preparation of the DA for the first stage of the over 55’s resort are still being undertaken with the hope that the DA will be lodged in early 2017. More information sessions for members are planned for this year to keep you all up to date on the progress. My thanks to all the Sporting sub club volunteers for their help at the 2016 Kids Xmas party, these wonderful people each year give up their time to make this event an enjoyable one for all, their assistance is appreciated by the Board and myself. Again I remind you of our Responsible Service of alcohol policy under the NSW Liquor Act 2007 and the various signs throughout all of our clubs indicating the Code of Practice for the supply and service of alcohol. This is the law and our staff are all trained and are following the requirements of legislation when enforcing these rules.

To those members who lost loved ones, my condolences.

Thanks to the amazing support of all the sponsors, special guests, volunteers and staff this sensational event couldn’t be as successful as it was. Those survivors past, present and future now have a chance to heal, see the light in dark times and to make that difference, thanks to exceptional people coming together to say NO! to domestic violence.

“Whilst it is an opportunity for them, it is also good for Manly when we are a bit thin on numbers with injuries or we have blokes still returning from surgery.” Weisner said the partnership allows Manly to tap into the enormous pool of talented rugby league players in the Blacktown region. “We have got a lot of good kids out west. Manly can supplement the local talent out here and help make the Sea Eagles stronger,’’ Weisner said. “That’s the key to it. The opportunities now for guys out west to join Manly is awesome.”

The Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles will have their first trial match against the Illawarra Steelers on Saturday, February 4 (venue to be advised), before tackling North Sydney Bears at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on February 11.

BWC SOCCER CLUB

2016 was a hectic but rewarding year for BWSFC.

We ended up with 13 teams playing in the finals and 4 teams winning a Premiership. Once again it was our aim to cater for the social and competitive needs of our members, develop the full potential of participants, be aware of the diversity of our community and play the game with spirit in a fair and sporting way. But most of all it was about having fun in an environment that was safe and supportive. It was also with great pride that we were able to raise $7633.00 for our charity this year – The Cancer Council – a big thank you to all our members who pulled together to make it happen! To register for 2017 you first need to go to http://www.myfootballclub.com.au and register online then come along to one of our registration dates below and don’t forget to keep an eye on our website www.workersfc.com.au for updates and info. Playing WEDNESDAY SOCIAL INDOOR BOWLS, you’ll enjoy an exciting game in air-conditioned comfort. Visitors are very welcome to come on any of our bowls day, you just have to turn up on the third floor (level 3b) of the main club in Campbell St. If you have a problem getting to the BWC then you may get a No 721 bus from Stand No 7 at the Blacktown Railway Bus Interchange, which also stops at Westpoint Bus Interchange (bus stop No 8) on its way to the Workers Club. It leaves on the hour every hour with the first one leaving at 8am. Arrive to register for play by 9.45am. All we ask is that you wear flat soled shoes, preferably bowls shoes or similar and bowls are provided. To play bowls, you do not need to bring a partner or bowls with you, as we draw registered names by number to determine who plays with whom. We resume play on the 11th Jan 2017. SMALL BOATS & RECREATION CLUB

MODEL BOAT CLUB

The summer & early spring months are a fantastic time for our club to enjoy the million dollar views our waterways have to offer. Naturally there is no better place to see this than from your boat.

Every Sunday the lake at the Hubertus club is the venue for the enthusiastic boat modellers to show and sail their creations. All types of boats and ships are to be seen from scale warships to tugboats to paddle steamers to yachts.

The bonus is the fish are more active from the increased water temperatures. This is reflected by our Fisho’s usually recording their best catches during this period in our comp.

The club has some 100 members and new members are always welcome. As well as our regular Sunday sailing a dedicated group of sailors race the new class of DF95 radio controlled yachts every Wednesday. The new DF95 class yacht is a small, cheap, easily transportable model which is both and excellent learning boat as well as an ideal one class competition boat. (one of our members is competing in the USA nationals at the time of writing).

Boating & fishing in a social group is by far the best way to go! Offering safety in numbers along with bragging rights for ”the one that got away”? Our club ventures onto the water on the 3 Sunday weekend of every month! So come along & join us www.smallboatrecreation.com

Whether you are a model builder, someone who enjoys the fun of sailing a boat or just a spectator it is worth visit (and a good opportunity to lunch at Workers Hubertus).

Darren McIntosh Club Secretary smallboats@optusnet.com.au

In March next year (date to be finalised) the club will be hosting a model show in the Hubertus Club auditorium. This will be another opportunity to see and admire the model maker’s skill.

BWC DEEP SEA FISHING Members of Blacktown Workers Club are welcome to join our fishing club, if you require further information you can contact John Attard 0412 124 935, Danny Wan 0414 621 616 or Colin Gardiner 0414 356 181. This club meets every Friday 4.30 – 6pm in the Jack McNamara lounge where we conduct a weekly seafood raffle. Come along for some great fishing. SEPTEMBER:
