Reagan Campbell-Gillard The man behind the mo
He’s the NRL enforcer that’s renowned for his signature moustache, but for Reagan Campbell-Gillard he’ll always be the humble Westy living out his dream playing for the team he loves and doing what he can to help those less fortunate.
It could have been different for the man they call ‘Reg’, who ‘retired’ at the age of nine because of the heavy contact and injuries. He would venture in to other sports before returning to the game he would eventually make his name in. “Back then I didn’t really like footy. I was getting hurt all the time and mum reckons I would come off the field crying, so I started playing soccer and hockey instead,” CampbellGillard recalled.
Campbell-Gillard would enter the Panthers junior development system as a teenager and go on to win a Premiership with the under-20’s Holden Cup side in 2013. Then making the step up to New South Wales Cup in which he would win his second title in two seasons. In 2015 he made his NRL debut in round one against the Bulldogs. All that is remaining in his collection is an NRL Premiership.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play in the Holden Cup and “Then I grew and wanted to NSW Cup Grand Final wins. play Rugby League again. Now To get the trifecta (with an NRL I love the contact. I love getting Premiership), I can’t possibly absolutely smashed. It takes me explain what that feeling would a couple days to recover from be like,” he said. it but then it’s on again the next week. I love it.” Community spirit is something that spurs him on every time 4

he’s on the field wearing the Panthers jersey. Growing up in Mount Druitt, Campbell-Gillard learnt the values of what makes the area so special. “The community out here is the best. I really love the people.” Campbell-Gillard is very community minded, in June this year he was named as the first official Ambassador of Street Swags, a charity providing basic shelter to people experiencing homelessness. Created in 2007, Street Swags have provided close to 40,000 swags to those sleeping rough throughout Australia. “I wanted to do something that had a positive impact to the lives of those who really needed it. I came across Street Swags
and was keen to help however I could. They’re doing a lot of good.” He said. The swags are made by Australian prisoners who are gaining TAFE qualifications and skills while making the products. This helps their chances of getting a job when they are released, which is helping break the cycle of poverty, crime and homelessness. After the swags
are made they are rolled and packed by school children, who by doing this are learning the importance of giving back to the community. Campbell-Gillard adds “I really like that this one charity is helping so many people. I’m really proud to be their first ambassador.” At just 23 years old, CampbellGillard is still in the infancy

of his career but has shown maturity and a level-head beyond his years. An established star of the Panthers side with a strong community focus, his future is bright. When asked if he had any advice for avid moustachegrowers, he said his tips are to keep it clean, trimmed and occasionally add some styling wax.
