COMMUNITY SUPPORT

from the chairman DAVID OLSSON

Welcome to this edition of our regular Superstar magazine. As I write Easter is again almost upon us. I sincerely hope this year has been a happy one for each of you thus far. I am pleased to report that our Club is tracking along quite well in a tightening economic environment. Retail trade generally is down and this usually reflects in Club trading. Whilst we are not bucking the trend we are, at this stage, tracking to budget and our subsidiary businesses are also reasonably on target. Our debt levels are again better than projected, however we still have some hotel works to complete and we are looking at some more internal Club works which will slightly increase our debt for about twelve months. For all that we remain financially sound, more than meeting our debt targets. More on the planned works shortly. As indicated above we are in the final stages of extending our hotel, which includes the addition of 50 odd rooms, the refurbishment of all of the original rooms, the renovation of the hotel conference facilities and the addition of function space. As I have said, demand for rooms at Rydges had reached a level whereby the numbers for expansion stacked up nicely. I am sure you will be very pleased with the new look which is scheduled to be completed mid year. The Board is also in the advanced stages of approving some more internal works at the mother Club with those areas not recently renovated under review. If things stack up the way we would like, the indoor gaming area and Café Samba will have a significantly different and improved look and we are intending some work on the foyer as well. Overall this will further enhance the entrance to the Club, giving it a great new look. I’ll keep you informed about this as our plans progress.

grounds staff some serious challenges. More rain in the coming months would certainly be welcome to green things up again and to replenish the rapidly draining dam. The Course Superintendent and his staff have been working long and hard to keep the course open and we are thankful for their efforts. Our golf professional, ‘Scott Martyn’ is proving to be very popular with members and is working tirelessly to provide the kind of services members want. Well done Scott. In the club itself the dining experience continues to go from strength to strength and feedback has been consistently positive, our chef attracting much praise from Club regulars and guests who are happy with the range and quality of food offerings. Head Chef Shaun Holmes is working wonders and, having eaten there regularly myself, I can highly recommend the dining experience. I have previously spoken about the Board adopting a Charter so as to formalise a broad governance structure for the conduct of the Board and for the actions of Board members themselves. I can report that we have implemented a Board Charter and all Board members have signed off on a pledge to always act within the bounds of this document. The Charter covers such things as Board member behaviour, training requirements and conduct in meetings and is another step in our goal of being a world class Corporate Governance enterprise. Many members would personally know, or at least know of, long term Director Alan Scott. Alan recently celebrated 30 years as a Director of this Club, a mighty achievement and one of which he is rightly proud. For many years Alan served as liaison to our Sporting and Internal Clubs and was also a long time Secretary to the Board. His more recent role has been as Welfare Director which has brought him into contact with a huge number of members. Congratulations Alan and thank you from all members for your wonderful service to our Club. On a lighter note the new school year is well under way now and I wish all associated with our schools all the best for the year. This of course includes parents and the students themselves as well as teachers and administrators. As always our club will again strive to give our schools all the support we can. Once again thank you to members for your ongoing support and I trust you continue to enjoy the benefits provided by your King of Clubs. I’d like to wish all members all the best for the rest of the year and I sincerely hope we continue to prosper in the face of lingering challenges for the industry.

Meanwhile at the Golf Club the course is looking a little parched as extreme summer temperatures and a lack of rain combine to set our Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

Club Reports

FROM tHE GENERAL MANAGER

FROM tHE WELFARE director

MICHAEL LAVORATO

Welcome everyone to this Autumn/Winter edition of Superstar Magazine. This time of the year is my favourite. The weather is a little cooler, the football season is underway and as always there is lots to enjoy at our club. I hope this edition inspires you to come and visit soon to experience all that is on offer at the King of Clubs. You will have noted by the cover of the magazine that the club turns 50 this year. We are very excited to be celebrating this significant milestone and we have many events, member offers and lots of surprises in store as we count down to our birthday on 5 December 2018. There is a lot more to reveal but you can get a taste of some of what is in store on the adjacent page. I had the privilege to catch up again recently with Bill Meehan – who we affectionately refer to as our “Founding Father”. We spoke about the club and he was as alert, witty and interested as always about the future redevelopment plans of the club – and genuinely excited about the 50year milestone. You can read more about Bill as he reflects on those early years on page 16. Speaking of founders – you could make a case for that term to be attached to Kristen Green. Kristen is Aquafit’s Executive General Manager and has been at the helm of this amazing business since opening in 2004. I am proud to advise that the international Fitness community has recognised Kristen’s achievements by honouring her as the recipient of the Women Leader Award – the first Australian to receive such recognition. You can read more about this deserved award on page 8. Work on the Rydges expansion continues with an expected completion date of late August 2018. The works encompass the construction of an additional 38 rooms, the soft refurbishment of all existing 116 rooms and a complete remodelling and transformation of the meeting rooms and outdoor terrace. On completion the impressive product will ensure Rydges remains one of Sydney’s best performing and appealing hotel properties. Whilst construction is underway – I am happy to report that it’s still business as usual in the Hotel restaurant and bar – Otis. The menu has been refreshed and High Tea is still as popular as ever. I can’t recommend a lunch or dinner at Otis highly enough. Whilst on recommendations – I have had the pleasure of spending the occasional Sunday afternoon (or two) enjoying $5 Corona’s and 50 cent chicken wings on the Terrace at the far end of the club. Do yourself a favour and don’t miss out on discovering this very pleasant club space. It’s the perfect place to unwind. Finally – the Entertainment guide is definitely worth checking out with lots of shows sure to appeal to a wide and varied audience. Me – I’ve marked 24 August in my diary and am looking forward to Pete Murray’s first visit to the King of Clubs. As always – thanks for your continued support patronage, hope to see you at an event at the Club soon. PS – Look out in the next edition of Superstar for exciting news about the Club’s next proposed refurbishment. It promises to be one of the best yet.

ALAN SCOTT

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter edition of Superstar. Thankfully our long hot Summer is behind us and we can look forward to some cooler nights. It’s always sad to report the loss of valued Members and we were advised that Life Member, former Board Member, Peter Athanitis, (19671969) and (1971-82) passed away on 4 December 2017. Peter held badge number 153 and in early Club days was the printer of our Superstar magazine. We extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Shirley, his children and all the family. The year 2017 brought a great deal of sad news in the passing of long time Member, Paul Noonan, who was President of the Collegians RLFC for many years and Alison Ticehurst who was Secretary of Collegians RLFC for a lengthy time too. Also Bryce Regan, a former Mayor of Campbelltown Council and served the Campbelltown Community well throughout its early growth years. We were shocked to hear of the untimely death of our long time Member and good friend, Paul Tosi. Paul was General Manager of Campbelltown Council for 16 years and during that time was a visionary leader. Paul loved Campbelltown with a passion. Our condolences are with his wife, Denise, children and all his family. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the families of loved ones who have passed away recently. The list of deceased Members appears towards the back of this edition. May they all rest in peace. On a brighter note, we extend congratulations and best wishes to Pat and Ron Thorpe who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary back in November 2017. Well done to you both. Well known and long time Member, Mrs Kerrie Beatty, was honoured by Meals on Wheels for 40 years of selfless dedication to serving the community by assisting others. Well done Kerrie. Mrs Delore McDonald celebrated a significant birthday back in November. Delore celebrated her 80th birthday in fine style with a high tea at Rydges with family and friends. There’s certainly something going on with the offspring of our Board Members, some of whom have expanded their families since our last Edition. Peter and Carolyn Meadows welcomed their first grandchild (parents Elyse and Daniel), Layla Kate, in December. Quickly followed by seasoned grandparents, Mary Ellen and Bruce Bland (Katherine and Nathan) who outdid them in welcoming twin girls, Pearl Megan and Alexandra Mason. Parents are coping well and grandparents are run off their feet! Then when all was quiet after Christmas, our own family (Alan and Christine Scott) welcomed the early arrival of (Emmerson Rose) to parents Kathryn and Chris Lawrence. I have heard a whisper that we’re not finished welcoming babies yet. Watch this space in the next edition! Now that we are in the early season of Lent and will be welcoming Easter very soon, we wish all Members a blessed, safe and happy Easter and look forward to welcoming you in our Club again soon. Don’t forget to leave your Members announcements that you would like featured in Superstar with our friendly Receptionists. Alan Scott

International Recognition for Aquafit Leader

Aquafit’s Executive General Manager Kristen Green has always aimed to bring out the best in her team. Now, she’s been hailed internationally as one of the best. Kristen has been named as the 2018 recipient of the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA) Woman Leader Award. The Woman Leader Award is presented each year to a woman in the fitness industry who exemplifies the qualities of courage, perseverance, excellence, and professionalism. IHRSA President and CEO Joe Moore praised Kristen for her exceptional commitment, leadership and service to the Macarthur community. “Kristen has pursued her passion for the health and fitness industry, and today is a successful club operator and inspiring leader who serves as a positive role model for her team, her community, and aspiring leaders in the fitness industry.” Kristen says she is truly humbled and honoured. “It is my hope that through my own story, I can inspire, empower and motivate other women on their own journey to achieve their professional goals,” she said. Kristen will accept the award at the IHRSA Convention in San Diego, California in March, and will be the first Australian to receive this recognition. Campbelltown Catholic Club CEO, Michael Lavorato said “I am extremely proud of Kristen, her achievements and the positive role model she is for her team and our community, and she is a worthy recipient of this prestigious award. Kristen is responsible for the success of Aquafit since it’s opening in 2004, building a highly trusted and respected brand in the community, providing remarkable leadership, innovative strategic vision and a commitment to customer service excellence that has set Aquafit apart from the competition” Kristen, who holds an MBA with Distinction and a Bachelor of Sports Science (Exercise Science), has been at the helm of Aquafit since it opened in 2004. Celebrating

50 YEARS OF THE CLUB

Club CEO Michael Lavorato pointing out some of the latest growth to the Club’s founding father.

Catching up with our founder, Bill Meehan “Build it and they will come.” That famous line from the movie, ‘Field of Dreams’ is often used by Bill Meehan to sum up the early days of Campbelltown Catholic Club. Bill, 85, is our founding father – Member No. 1. It was his idea back in the 1960’s to create a social club to provide good meals and entertainment, and help fund local schools. So, he and his fellow pioneers did build. And they did come. In fact, we’re now celebrating the half century that has passed since that original Clubhouse opened its doors in 1968. Bill admits that never in his wildest dreams, did he imagine the growth and success that lay ahead. Even today, he still can’t believe it when he walks through the doors – while noting that the original Club would fit inside the foyer of today’s building. “I’m very proud to look around and see Rydges, THE CUBE, Aquafit, and of course this place (the main Club),” Bill said. “None of us back then imagined it would ever be this big or have this many Members – more than 50,000!” The Club is, of course, now a multi-million dollar landmark, the unrivalled entertainment hub of Macarthur, and backs countless schools, community groups and good causes. A special 50-year history book is now being compiled, with Bill’s support, but… in a nutshell… Our Club traces its origins to a working bee at St John the Evangelist Parish School in 1964. A group of parents were working up a sweat as volunteer labourers, which was the only way the school could afford to get extra classrooms built. After a hot day, some of these parent labourers were relaxing at a pub and, looking at the drinks they had just paid for, Bill spoke up: “There’s an easier way to build schools than this.” With the support of his mates – including Bruce and Ron McDonald, Noel Hill and John O’Reilly – they held their first social gathering in May 1965 (27 parishioners rolling up to an old scout hall). Their first year’s profit was $182. From little things, big things grow. On 5 December 1968, the new Club opened. It stood about near where the food court is now, and from there, it just kept on expanding outwards. Bill said that growth is thanks to generations of visionaries.

Our Club member No 1 enjoying a beer, handed to him by Maddison Rullis, who is one of the Club’s first ‘Cadet’ staffers – handpicked and extensively trained after graduating from Magdalene Catholic High School.

“Over the years we’ve had very good men and women who had the same foresight we had, but in a different way,” he said. “Back then in 1968 we would never have thought of building a hotel, or a gym, or so on. But successive waves of people, in different eras, have progressed the Club into the next era.” Movement grows out of movement. Bill remembers with great fondness the enthusiasm of early pioneers such as the McDonald brothers, or Stan Simmons, who made Superstar Magazine his passion for so many decades. But he gives special praise to Club Member 25 – his late wife, Valerie. “That’s something I’ve really got to say,” Bill said. “For that first Club Board… their wives were just marvellous. “We had to spend a lot of time in various meetings, and on trips around Sydney, getting the Club started, often missing out on family time, etc., and it was our wives who provided the back up. “Without the wives, there wouldn’t be a Club.” Bill dominated Club leadership in those early years, as president from 1965-68 and again in 1970-80. That stability has become a tradition, evident by the small number of presidents after Bill – Paul O’Loughlan, Noel Burton, Kevin Goonan and, since 2005, David Olsson. David has great respect for the Club pioneers, but is also clearly proud of the strides the present board is making, not only in the number of Club facilities, but the extraordinary reach of Club funding in our community. Bill says the biggest change he’s seen in the Club’s culture since 1968 is that back then the membership – like Campbelltown – was small. Everyone knew everyone else, all packed together in one big room. Now, of course, it’s a lot larger. “I come down here some nights for dinner and I wouldn’t know a soul,” Bill laughed. But he also acknowledged new generations are making their own stories. They might be a couple on their first date at Kyubi, or a young family enjoying lunch on the Terrace on Sunday, or a married couple at morning bingo, a music fan attending a concert at THE CUBE, or a swimmer doing laps at Aquafit. The list goes on and on. Ask a dozen people what Campbelltown Catholic Club means to them and you’re likely to get a dozen answers — all of them correct. Here’s to the next 50 years!

Bill reminiscing over the Foundation Members Board.

In the Community

INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE

Campbelltown Catholic Club has moved beyond diversity to inclusion in our workplace. We have been employing people with varying disability since 1990. During this time we have formed strong alliances with several disability groups such as OTEC, MDS and NOVA within the Macarthur region to provide opportunities to young people regardless of differences. Currently Campbelltown Catholic Club employs 5 staff with disability, each working to their own strengths to achieve their maximum potential either in administration, catering, maintenance or food and beverage. Each of these staff are valued, integral members of our team. We believe this inclusion is an important part of the Campbelltown Catholic Club’s culture of celebrating differences in the workplace Mater Dei, one of the Clubs long term partners has recently launched a new program in which the Club will participate. We thought it was timely to share some of the extraordinary work they are undertaking to ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the workplace and achieve their full potential.

Mater Dei launches Work and Community Path ways It’s a rare opportunity to be able to build a service without any precedence. It has been a fulfilling experience to be able initially invest time understanding the research surrounding transition from school to adulthood and then see the implementation of the research start to come to life . However, the real reward is yet to come, when we see it translate into goal achievement for each of these young adults.” Tennille Bertram, Director of Continuous learning In the second half of 2017 Tennille Bertram (Director of Continuous Learning) joined the Mater Dei team. Since that time she has been exploring offerings in the post school space. This has included numerous interviews, navigating the current environment, and formulating her model for the Mater Dei Post School Program, now called Work and Community Pathways. As with all Mater Dei programs, the model if evidence based, and the rigour Tennille has bought to this process has been exhaustive. Excitingly on Monday 29th February Mater Dei welcomed their first cohort to the program. Six young adults have commenced their journey in the “Launch Pad” working on personalised goals towards inclusion in our workplaces and the greater Macarthur community, after they graduate from the program. The first week has been a significant step for each of the young adults participating in the program, but also Mater Dei. Some of the young adults became more familiar with sending emails, while others began to think about the goal that will drive their work in the program. While it’s very early in the program, we are optimistic that this program is going to give the students the tools and skills to set their paths for the future. A future where they will be able to use each of their unique talents to their full capacity in our community. If you would like to learn more about this program please contact Simone Wilson, Mater Dei Development Office at simonew@materdei.org.au

Pete Murray Heartbeats Tour

It’s an unlikely story… a rising Rugby football star gets so badly injured that he has to leave his sport behind. He picks up an acoustic guitar, teaches himself how to play it and records an indie CD that he sells after shows from the back of his Kombi Van. His debut album, the roots/rock infused ‘Feeler’ (2003), sold 6 x platinum in Australia (450,000 copies) and earned 12 ARIA Award nominations. ‘Feeler’ eventually spent over two and a half years, in the Top 100. The acclaimed album spawned his classic ‘So Beautiful’ which went on to become the ‘Most Performed Australian Song of the Year’. Don’t miss Pete Murray in his debut at THE CUBE this August!

Looking Back

LOOKING BACK WITH JEFF MCGILL From Midnight Oil to Normie Rowe, and from Marina Prior to The Wiggles – famous acts have been coming to Campbelltown Catholic Club since 1968.

At the time, Steve was so impressed he rather boldly told the Campbelltown-Macarthur Advertiser that a major talent had just been discovered.

But did you know our Club has also launched stars before they were famous? A classic example is the 4 Trax – a young trio from Hurlstone Agricultural High School – who were doing doo-wop stuff.

“As Nevin McLeod from The Delltones [one of the judges] told me afterwards, you will be hearing an awful lot about the 4 Trax in the future,” Muter said. “They were just great. Their act was a bit like a cross between The Delltones and the Four Kinsmen.”

Toby Allen, Phil Burton and brothers, Andrew and Mike Tierney won the Catholic Club’s Star Quest competition in 1992, and posed for this photo with our club’s then-General Manager, Steve Muter.

Well, Steve Muter was wrong…the Australian public didn’t get to hear a lot about the 4 Trax – but they did get to hear a lot about the new name the quartet gave itself shortly afterwards – Human Nature. Andrew, Mike, Toby and Phil released their debut album, ‘Telling Everybody’, in 1996 and have since become four of the top-selling artists in Australia. They even opened for Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, and dazzled Las Vegas and Oprah. A long way from the stage at King Auditorium in the Catholic Club, but not so far away they have forgotten. “It was one of our big wins,” Mike Tierney told the Macarthur Advertiser in 2012. “Back then there was no Idol or X Factor. “That win at Campbelltown spurred us on.” Human Nature also became famous for being one of only two acts ever signed on the spot by Sony Music. The other was Picton singer Missy Lancaster – another former Catholic Club performer – who is now one of the top young country music stars in Australia, with two smash LPs.

Aquafit’s LivingLooking StrongerForward - Celebrating 10 Years!

Jack Crawford’s legacy If you see Kayla Crawford’s beaming smile as she pours you a drink, you’ll also be catching a glimpse of history. Because her grandfather, Jack Crawford, was one of the great pioneers of Campbelltown Catholic Club. “It feels good because I guess I’m carrying on the family legacy,” Kayla said. “It’s also a great place to work when I’m doing uni.” This generational heritage is nothing new: young staffer Lachlan McDonald (son of Board Member David McDonald, (and grandson of Club Member number 3, the late Bruce McDonald) is another typical example. But to Kayla, is helps forge a link with a grandfather she never knew. Jack died in 1987, although he is still remembered with the annual Jack Crawford Games at Rosemeadow’s John Therry Catholic High School, and the Crawford Maths Block at St Patrick’s College. Jack was not only a Club Director, (from 1969 until his death) but was a key financial advisor. We were not the only local institution to benefit from his big heart. Jack, a senior bank executive, was also the honorary auditor of no less than 23 different church, sporting, cultural and charitable organisations. In 1983, Pope John Paul II rewarded him with a citation Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, and medal – only the 9th Australian to receive that award, the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity. The Club recently presented the Crawford family with a posthumous Life Membership, as a symbolic gesture of thanks. “Jack Crawford was one of the true unsung heroes of Campbelltown Catholic Club,” said CEO Michael Lavorato, “so, in taking this step, we hoped to sing Jack’s praises a lot louder.”

New Bishop of Wollongong

MOST REV BRIAN MASCORD ORDAINED AS

THE FIFTH BISHOP OF WOLLONGONG

In one of the largest Catholic episcopal ordinations in Australian history, a “full-house” of some 4,500 guests, including the Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, His Excellency Most Reverend Adolfo Tito Yllana, witnessed the ordination of Most Rev Brian Mascord as the fifth Bishop of Wollongong at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Thursday 22 February 2018. Livestreamed to a national and global audience, the principal consecrator, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP (Archbishop of Sydney) and coconsecrators, Bishop Peter Ingham (now Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Wollongong) and Bishop William Wright (Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle Diocese), presided over the Mass of Ordination for the new Bishop Mascord. They were joined by 34 Australian bishops and 113 priests concelebrating the Mass; parishioners and families from all the diocesan parishes; principals, staff and students from more than 40 Diocesan Catholic schools; staff and families from diocesan agencies and affiliated organisations; leaders of other churches and faiths; civic leaders in government and business, along with over 700 of Bishop Brian’s family, friends, parishioners and community members from the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle where he has ministered since being ordained to the priesthood in 1992. Bishop Mascord said, “Life can throw up many challenges—ones that can, at times, seem almost insurmountable. When the Apostolic Nuncio rang me at the end of November with the invitation from the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to be the bishop of Wollongong, it all seemed totally insurmountable. But, here I am—overwhelmed, nervous, yet open to what the Lord has in store for me and for all of us. I am very conscious of the incredible trust that Pope Francis now places in me.” Bishop Mascord said, “I look forward to living and working with you as together we continue to build up the presence of the Kingdom of God in this area of the vineyard.”

World Triathalon Series

Natalie Van Coevorden takes podium on World Stage!

Final placings: 1st Rachel Klamer – Netherlands, 2nd Jessica Learmonth – Great Britain, 3rd Natalie Van Coevorden - Australia

Many Club members will know local triathlete Natalie Van Coevorden. Campbelltown Catholic Club has proudly supported Natalie for several years now as she aspires and trains towards representing Australia at the highest levels. When based in Australia Natalie can be found training regularly at Aquafit taking advantage of our world class strength training and pool facilities. Natalie competed in the first leg of the 2018 ITU’s World Triathlon Series (WTS) in Abu Dhabi on 2-3 March, achieving her first podium finish at a WTS event. We’d like to share some of the excitement with you…. Race day threw everyone off guard with rain starting to fall and a colder air temperature. Abu Dhabi gets about three days of rain a year and racing on the F1 track was going to make critical moments even trickier. Before I even got to the race site, I was covered in sand, water and muck off the roads.

ender. After the second lap on the bike, I got more familiar with where it was still quite wet and I become more comfortable in taking a line I thought worked best. By the end of the ride I was in a group of six girls that entered the cycle to run transition (T2) together and the race was anyone’s to be won with 50 seconds to the next group.

The swim got off to a good start and having such a lengthy straight to the first buoy gave me a chance to put myself in a good place before the turn. Coming back into the swim exit, I moved up a few places and exited the water in sixth position. I could see the few athletes in front of me so I knew I would have to work hard on the first part of the bike and not panic.

The run quickly split the group into a lead group of four. After 3.5 km of running together we started to split and I fell off the back into fourth place. Coming into the final 400m, we were all still close when I saw the third place girl pull in to the penalty box. I just kicked as hard as I could to the finish line. It was definitely a moment of how much do you want this. It was a photo finish and I couldn’t be happier to get third by one second. It took a while to sink in but I am ecstatic getting my first WTS podium as it is something I have worked hard towards for so long. I knew I had to back myself and race with intent from start to finish.

The cycle course is one of the most demanding courses on the WTS circuit. I knew if I wanted to stay upright I had to do the basics right and keep focused on my own ability. Within minutes people were crashing and I knew that I had to ride to myself even if it took one or two seconds more to get around the corner, it wasn’t worth the risk of doing a season

SOUTH WEST SYDNEY ACADEMY OF SPORT

The aim of the Academy is to assist athletes gain recognition, within individual sports specific ‘emerging athlete programs’, junior Australian teams, the NSW Institute of Sport and ultimately the Australian Institute of Sport, and senior Australian teams. The Academy also continues to perform exceptionally well in the representative arena, with a significant number of athletes winning selection in age specific NSW and Australian teams. In that time, we have seen the Academy grow to be the premier sports development organisation servicing Sydney’s south west region. The Academy often goes under the radar when it comes to acknowledging the success of its athletes and programs. It now provides quality development opportunities for talent identified local junior athletes between 13 and 19 years of age, across 17 varied sports.

Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

The Academy is one of a network of ten regional academies of sport located across NSW. Regional academies provide talent identified athletes the opportunity to gain the quality support they need to develop, without having to move away from their family, friends, school, or religious organisation. The Academy is also financially supported by the NSW Office of Sport, our local Councils and local businesses. ClubsNSW sees the benefit of supporting the development of talented junior athletes through its principal corporate sponsorship of the annual ClubsNSW Regional Academy Games and the development of the regional academies ‘Your local Club’ athlete education program resource.

Western Sydney Sports Academy

21 Year Celebration

When fully operational the resource will provide sports education in the areas of Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Drugs in Sport, Youth Leadership, Sports Medicine, Injury Prevention, Media Training, Public Speaking, Mental Health, Financial Fitness and Integrity in Sport. The ability to be able to provide so many opportunities for our local youth, only comes about through the hard work, of many supportive people and organisations.

And, as our region continues its amazing growth and more and more young families move into the region, the need for the Academy’s services will continue to grow. Therefore, a continued close relationship with such a supportive organisation such as the Campbelltown Catholic Club, is imperative for the Academy going forward”. Proudly sponsored, naming rights partner

When recognising the wide-ranging support provided the Academy there is no more important support provided, than that provided by the Academy’s own 70 plus, volunteer coaches, managers and support staff members. These local time-generous volunteers, are the life-blood of the Academy, and the Academy could not function without their hard work and absolute dedication to their varied sports programs. They are an integral part of the component’s, that make the Academy and its athletes so successful. Recognised as a very proud Academy Executive Director, Mr. Gerry Knights said, “The Academy works hard to maintain and include additional sports within its program to allow local athletes the opportunity to participate equally with other regions for representative success.

Sub Clubs AUSSI MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB Oh what a feeling! No, we’re not selling cars. We’re just celebrating our second consecutive national endurance swimming title; first out of over 150 Masters Swimming Clubs across Australia! Yes, we’re smiling because it was an incredible effort from all Campbelltown Masters Club Members. Back-to-back national titles are very rare. Even rarer is 18 consecutive NSW titles (no, that’s not a typo – 18 years in a row) for the NSW Endurance Swimming Award. At Campbelltown Masters Swimming we are very proud of our achievements, especially since it is such a combined team achievement from a fairly small group. Our ‘team’ of 26 swimmers achieved the highest average endurance swimming point-score in NSW and Australia. Mr President, Greg Jacques, summed up the performance perfectly: “We worked really hard in 2016 and were not sure we could repeat the effort in 2017. The results came out recently and our reaction was obviously ecstatic”. “It came down to really gutsy individual swims, like Bev Conley, Kerry Tier and Linda Beveridge doing hour-long swims before and after Christmas just to boost our points tally,” added Greg. “It might sound exhausting but we pace ourselves, have rests, and then go again – it’s a bit like doing laps of a backyard pool, only longer.” Lesley Keogh, in just her second year at Campbelltown Masters, became our latest individual Australian endurance swimming champion. Lesley joins Heather Rouen, Katie Lewis, Russell McLeod, Jim Pelosa and Owen Sinden as individual national champions, while Hans Preiss, Lindsay Risk, Pat Lewis, Helga Duncan, Lesley Thompson and Kerry Tier completed all their possible swims. Other major contributors were Diane Baker, Linda Beveridge, Bev Conley, Kay Hough, Greg Jacques, Victor Libdy and Mark Thompson; so, an all-round Club effort, really. We welcomed a new Member, Suzie Haddad, to the Club in 2017. Suzie has added a spark to our Sunday morning swims and has been a regular at inter-club competition and NSW championships. Speaking of our Sunday swims, Campbelltown is unique in masters swimming in that we hold weekly races, with points adding up to the ‘Club Champion’, ‘Most Improved’, and some other awards. Our Sunday morning swims are the backbone of our Club – and always attract most members for a relaxed-but-semi-competitive start to Sunday mornings. Our Club would not be as good and successful as it is without a lot of work behind the scenes, so a huge thank you to everyone who works to make our Club run as smoothly as it does. A (very!) close second to swimming is our wonderful social calendar, capably run by Lesley and Mark Thompson. Sometimes I wonder how we have time for swimming, with the annual Australia Day BBQ hosted by the Thompsons, two separate ‘Big 0’ birthday celebrations for Lesley Keogh and Lindsay Risk, the Peter Allen ‘Tenterfield to Rio’ show at Casula Powerhouse, our Club Presentation hosted by Heather and Terry Rouen, and a Sydney Harbourside walk around Olympic Park at Homebush. But wait, there’s more… ‘Kinky Boots’ at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, the City to Surf, ‘Dusty and The Divas’ at Casula

40

Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

Powerhouse, the hilarious Wharf Review in Wollongong, our Club Christmas party hosted by Annie and Doug Cooke, another Christmas breakfast at the Campbelltown Regional Art Gallery Café, quarterly ‘Ladies Luncheons’ and the odd bike ride along the M7. We really aren’t that serious about swimming, we’re only here for the fun! It wasn’t all fun, though. The club has been amazed at the fighting qualities of Marguerite Davidson who is battling back from a stroke, ably assisted by husband Bill. A fall from a ladder with subsequent broken bones stopped Kay Hough for a few months too. Finally, thanks to Campbelltown Amateur Swimming Club for their unwavering support whenever we host a swim meet and to Campbelltown Catholic Club for their continued sponsorship. Thank you! Last year I wrote “Here’s to another record-breaking year in 2017”. Well, we did it! Sunday mornings at Campbelltown Pool, Bradbury - it’s the best way to wake up on a Sunday. Trust me, I’m a doctor! Sub Clubs C4 CHOIR This year has already been a blockbuster for C4 with the performance of our first Symphonic Concert, ‘C4 Sings Songs of the Stage & Screen’. The concert was the first event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Campbelltown Catholic Club. Our 40 Choir Members performed our repertoire alongside 50 talented musicians on THE CUBE stage in the largest concert that the Campbelltown Catholic Club has ever produced. It was a monumental undertaking that was achieved through the hard work and dedication of a great team of people in our choir. Special thanks go to our talented Choral Director, Margaret Glynn, our Creative Director, Matthew Glynn, and the Vision Team, Katie, Zsuzsana, Amanda, Georgie, Anne and Mike. C4 is always looking for new members, so get in contact with us and come join in with Campbelltown’s premier choir! CAMDEN CATS SENIOR AFL CLUB The Camden Cats are delighted to announce that the Club has been elevated to the AFL Sydney Premier Division competition for the 2018 season. We are immensely proud to have achieved this promotion; which we believe recognises our efforts over the last five years in achieving sustained on-field and off-field success, our contribution to the local community and the standing of the Club in the continued growth of Australian Rules Football. Our elevation to Premier Division is important not only for the Club, but for the greater Macarthur Region and South-West Sydney; as we will now bring the highest level of community AFL in the state to our doorstep. We can’t wait to firmly establish the Macarthur Region as one of the great New South Wales-based AFL communities. Last year the Club’s first grade side made the finals in our first year in the AFL Sydney Division One competition, following a premiership in Division Two in 2016. We also showed off our playing depth in 2017 by making finals in all three senior men’s grades and taking out the Under 19s Division Two Premiership (pictured).

In addition, the Camden Cats will expand again this season; with a sixth team. We will field four men’s, one women’s and one Under 19’s side; so no matter your gender, age or level of playing ability, we have the team for you! If you or somebody you know is interested in playing AFL, please contact Joshua Leys (0420 279 293) or Greg McGuiness (0413 257 516). Alternatively, you can visit the Camden Cats Website, Facebook Page (Camden Cats Senior AFL) or follow us on Twitter @CatsAFL for more information. Games are played on Saturday morning or afternoons from April to September, with training held on weeknights from 7pm. Camden has a family-friendly, social and inclusive club culture that welcomes new players from all walks of life. The Camden Cats AFL season is set to commence on Saturday 7 April with our inaugural Camden Cats Premier Division game to be played against Western Suburbs at our home ground at Fairfax Reserve, Harrington Park. All grades are playing at home that day; so we are expecting it to be a massive day, with a massive local crowd to match! Make sure you get down there and see history made. We look forward to the ongoing support of the Campbelltown Catholic Club and its Members during the 2018 season. And thank you for your support last season. CCC FISHING CLUB The Campbelltown Catholic Club Fishing Club annual week-long trip for 2017 was held at Ulladulla Headlands Tourist Park on the NSW South Coast in the last week of October with approximately 30 Members meeting at the Headland Caravan Park to begin the setup of our camp for the week. This included a marquee and various items to make the week enjoyable, and with everyone pitching in to provide a hand the job was done in record time! Special thanks must go out to Frank Muscat who volunteered to tow the club trailer to Ulladulla for us. A sausage sizzle was cooked up for lunch, allowing everyone to start discussing their plan of attack for the upcoming week of fishing. Overall, it was an excellent week with the weather being reasonably kind to us allowing us to fish 6 of the 7 days (Mother Nature was allowing us to rest for one day and encouraging us to fish on another). Great results for the week - total fish weighed 446kg (of this, 244kg were Snapper) Largest Fish - Snapper 3.28 kg, caught by John Ockers Champion Male Angler – Johnny Van Heeswyk Champion Female Angler – Natalie Harrison Champion Boat – Wayne (Spider) Harrison

The 2017 season also saw the Club field a women’s side for the first time in a number of years; with women’s AFL having seen massive growth in popularity the last few years. Our Camden Cats women’s side was extremely competitive last season, winning their last four games in a row. We can’t wait to see how they go in their second season!

A fantastic week with not only snapper making up the numbers but plenty of Morwong, Flathead and Pig Fish also filling the eskies. Great week for all! As always, a couple of trips were planned to Greenwell Point in November and December with conditions being reasonable on both trips, good bags of snapper and flathead made up the numbers on both trips

Sub Clubs February 2018 Greenwell Point Trip: At the time of writing this submission, a few of our Members are packing for a weeklong trip to Greenwell Point. This trip should be pretty good based on some of the local reports down that way. Watch this space in the next Superstar for an updated Report. The CCC Fishing Club is very active throughout the year, welcoming families as well as singles who may be interested in spending quality time on the water with likeminded people. We are continuing to grow and love the fact that we have more ladies joining and enjoying the adventures on the high seas. We meet the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm, if you would like to join us please feel free to pop in at the meeting. New Members are always welcome. Good luck and until next time, tight lines..!

second round saw some average scores due to the rain I guess, Jeff Wright & Liam Murphy had a 48, followed by Alan & Mark Smith with a 45. The winner of this year’s 2BBB was Jeff Wright & Liam Murphy with a combined total of 93 points. The Presidents Trophy was won by Steve Kemp with a nice score of 48 points, and runnerup was Wayne Parkes with 41 points. The Captains Trophy was won by Elwyn Ward with a good score of 42 points. We managed to win the association shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club for the third year in a row 4-1, Adam Welton from Lidcombe won the Club Champion with a 79 nett and Lidcombe took home the Paul Ryan, a good effort by all those involved. The annual Canberra match saw a closely fought out game with Canberra coming out on top. Sad to see the shield go back to Canberra, but we will be trying harder this year. The annual RSL challenge against Campbelltown RSL was a tightly fought contest with Campbelltown RSL coming out on top and winning with 504 points and the Campbelltown Catholic Club on 492. Alan Smith (President) noted that it would be good to see the trophy cabinet full again this year. Our Cock of the Walk (matchplay) is still underway with Bob Piefke to play Paul Weidenhofer for the title, good luck to both golfers. We had 20 golfers attend our annual weekend away which this year was at Catalina at Batemans Bay. We had some great weather, good golf and camaraderie for an enjoyable weekend. This year we will be going back to Catalina at Batemans Bay and Members are encouraged to signal your intentions early as it is expected to book out this year. Our Club welcomes all players, in particular we would like to see ladies and juniors participate in the great social atmosphere that exists at this Club. The Committee and Members greatly appreciate the support received from The Catholic Club, which has been ongoing since our inception in 1969. Most games are played fortnightly early on a Sunday and those interested in joining can access our website at: www.cathogolfers.com.au or through the link on the Catholic Club Website. We are well underway into the competition year, with the championship rounds not too far away. Before then we still have the Max Berthon Shield and we will start our defense of the association shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club.

Reflecting on our successes from last year, some of the highlights would have to be our Ladies B Division team winning the Grand Final. In a nail biter they came away with the win. A truly great bunch of ladies, both young and old. Well done team!

Feel free to stop by at a training night any Thursday during school term to learn more! Finally, a huge thank you to our major sponsor, Campbelltown Catholic Club, their continued support of ‘Collies’ is greatly appreciated. COLLEGIANS CRICKET CLUB In the junior ranks, we fielded four sides and even though we did not make the semi-final in any grade, the juniors had a very enjoyable year. We need to all get together and spread the word amongst our friends to come and play cricket with this great Club.

In addition, many of our Collies hockey players were selected to represent the local Association, Metropolitan South West (MSW) Hockey, in various age groups from Under 13 through to Masters at State Championships across NSW in 2017. The selection made even more exciting with one of our Masters Teams finishing as runnersup. Our successes didn’t just come in the form of grand final victories… The MSW Hockey Association awards a Best & Fairest for each division in the competition. A huge congratulations to Club President Ashley Clinch (Men’s Division), Maddison Logue (Under 18’s) and Morgan Ryder (Under 13’s) for being selected as Best & Fairest in the Association for your division!

In seniors we entered 5 sides in the CDCA Competition and had two sides, our fifth and seventh grade, make the semis but both were unable to convert into grand final appearances. This year we saw our entry back into first grade and although it was a challenging year, there were good performances from our younger players to keep the energy in the side to continue this pursuit. Once again, our All Abilities Cricket Program (AACP) was the shining light in a very successful season. This year our co-ordinator Alycia Cantrill ran a structured program for 10 weeks and our numbers increased. AACP consisted of over 30 junior members and we have continued our partnership with Macarthur Special Olympics, hosting a round game of their representative season early in the year at St Gregory’s College. Once again the program is a resounding success because of the willingness of people to volunteer their time, and involves volunteers from not only Collegians, but all over the Campbelltown district. This year the All Abilities Cricket Program saw the nomination by one parent Lorraine Grout for Stephen Cantrill in the P&O Homegrown Hero Competition held nationally on Channel 10 during the BBL. Stephen and Lorraine were rewarded the win and will both be off on cruises later this year. The Collegians Cricket Club will also benefit with a contribution from P&O of $1,000. Alycia Cantrill, Stephen Cantrill, Lorraine and Matt Grout at the Presentation to Stephen and Lorraine for the Channel 10 P&O Homegrown Hero Competition, at Campbelltown Golf Club. In the coming years, the committee will work hard to grow the Club and try to expand our playing ranks. We will look to provide a stronger base to our young cricketers and increase our community involvement for the benefit of all. We will expand our All Abilities Cricket Program and hope to increase its numbers and its exposure to bring cricket for all into the spotlight. If you or one of your friends wishes to play cricket next season, please contact the Club as per addresses below. Our relationship with the Catholic Club and St Gregory’s College remains strong and this will hold us in good stead. This season we

MOUNTAIN DEVILS BUSHWALKING AND SOCIAL CLUB

As always, we thank the Campbelltown Catholic Club for its continued support in all aspects of our Club. Providing meeting rooms and function rooms as well as letting us run raffles at the Golf Club each week to benefit our Members. The Golf Club is our home during summer and we really do appreciate all that they have done for Collegians Cricket. Email: spc17n@gmail.com.au Web: www.colliescricket.nsw.com.au Facebook: Campbelltown Collegians Cricket Club, Campbelltown Collegians All Abilities Cricket Team

It’s never too soon to start reminding ourselves of our 2017/2018 Spring/Summer Walks. Those lazy, hazy, sizzling days of the last six months have seen the bushwalkers go to wonderful places that we rarely would see, unless with a delightful group of like-minded walkers. Where to begin? At the beginning I guess, but first our membership has climbed to 60 with new enthusiastic young walkers joining the group. September saw us off to Fuller’s Bridge with Lorraine, along the Lane Cove River followed by an historic Camden walk with Trish, which was close to home and coincided with the Open Day for Camden House. Then off to the Nattai NP with Michael to really stretch our legs. A walk for experienced walkers, but aren’t we all after all these years? We finished off the month with a change of scenery and pace with Kerri leading a walk around Barangaroo and Miller’s Point. As you can see, our walks are varied and we get around. October took us off to Bondi to Watsons Bay followed by the Boobera Pool in Heathcote NP. Sculpture By The Sea rounded off the month with an extension of walk to Centennial Park. Thank you to our walk leaders. November had Harry leading us to Brokers Nose along the Escarpment at Illawarra. Next week we were on a great off track walk in the Dharawal NP, a 12km romp through virgin bush.

COLLEGIANS SOCCER CLUB (COLLIES FOOTBALL CLUB) The Campbelltown Collegians Football Club is looking forward to an exciting 2018 season with 22 teams registered for an action packed winter season. Although a majority of our players are returning from previous seasons, we are very happy to welcome the numerous new faces that have decided to join the Collies Family.

Sub Clubs With Christmas approaching, our December walk was local along Peter Meadows Creek. Our social event was the Christmas Lunch at Ingleburn RSL arranged by our President Rosslyn who also organised our car camp to Bents Basin, a happy social occasion. January walks were cut short because of extreme heat. We managed a walk to the Boxvale Track, led by Ros with great views over the Burragorang Valley. Last Sunday of the month saw us playing “spot the water” at Thirlmere lakes. We did get very lush scenery. February concluded our six months programme again, requiring quick changes because of bushfire in the Royal NP. So Curra Moors changed to the Bundeena Loop with a fish and chip lunch to finish it off. Thanks to Harry for quick thinking. Jenny got her walk in to Little River Buxton along a lovely sandstone gorge. Our last walk for the month saw another quick change as the Illawarra Escarpment was shrouded in mist and rain. This is Australia! So Mike led us to Minerva Pool, a gorgeous spot so close to home. All in all a great walking time. Come join us! Walk with a registered club. Our website is: www.mountaindevils.org.au

Our last function in December is our Christmas party; we hope to see many Members attend. Not forgetting our worthy winners, Jess Newham our All-Day trophy winner, and Michael Etheridge our Half-Day winner. Congratulations and well done! Thank you to all our Members for their support through the year. ST JOHNS NETBALL CLUB Whilst we have seen some personnel changes from 2017 to 2018, the Club is pleased to have kept our numbers on par and 10 teams will again represent us. We again have teams in every age group and this year we have added an extra ladies team. The season starts April 7 with the traditional March Past down at Coronation Park Minto. The Association have again made some minor changes to last season’s time slots, mainly affecting our 13’s. We will update our Club Website with all essential details as soon as CDNA confirm our grades for 2018. We are pleased to have a couple of new coaches joining our ranks this season and a couple returning to us after a few years away. All of our coaches have completed their National Foundation Course or have attended the CDNA Coaching Clinic. It is always great to see more people getting involved with the kids sport. It is also important to know that all coaches have to maintain their accreditation to enable them to continue to coach at Club level. Therefore, our thanks go out to these dedicated people. We offer our congratulations to Damian McGovern on gaining his National C Umpire’s Badge during night comp in November last year and also to Erin McGovern on been selected to the South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) as an umpire for 2018. We are hoping for another big season for our umpires and hope to see them all progress along with their badges. We hope all of our players, coaches, managers and umpires enjoy the season ahead, no matter the results on the courts.

OVER 50’S SOCIAL CLUB Here we are already the third month into 2018, welcoming many new members to Our Over 50’s Social Club, joining us for Monday Carpet Bowls, Trivia and Day Trips. Our planned tours for this year are our Mystery Tour and BBQ Lunch in March. Scheduled for May is a trip to the Bus Museum in Leichhardt, with a tour in a vintage double decker bus, followed by lunch at Ashfield RSL. In June our Birthday Party will be a Hawaiian theme, so we look forward to dressing up for the occasion! We will celebrate Christmas in July at Briars in Bowral. August will see a trip to the Arms of Australia Museum in Penrith, including a buffet lunch at Penrith RSL.

Our pre-season started with a Bunnings BBQ to help raise funds for the upcoming season. Thanks go to Bunnings for allowing us the opportunity. We must also thank Salute Restaurant (Ingleburn) for their sausage donation. Also to the families who donated the bread and drinks. It was a very successful day (very hot and exhausting as well). Our Club would like to thank the Campbelltown Catholic Club for their continued support over many years. Our thanks also to Little Elves Child Care at Bargo, Sports2U Uniforms Leumeah, GB Painting and Scarcella Roadfreight Transport for their generous support. Finally, for those who want to keep up-to-date with our Club we have many different social media platforms, from ‘Facebook’, ‘Twitter’ and ‘Team App’. Please visit our website for all the links: www.stjohnsnetballclub.com Go The Saints!

Planned for October is our annual holiday to Ballarat, visiting many exciting places, such as Albury, Shepparton, Bendigo, Geelong, Werribee Zoo, Sovereign Hill, The Grampians , Kryal Castle and The Great Ocean Road.
