VALE

from the chairman DAVID OLSSON

A warm welcome to all members to this edition of our regular Superstar magazine. This year seems to have gone by quickly again and Christmas will be upon us before we know it. I wish all members well for the remainder of the year. The end of this year however also marks a special milestone in the history of your Club. December 5 2018 will be the 50th anniversary of the opening of the original Club premises. We have planned a large number of special events to celebrate the occasion and there is more detail around those outlined elsewhere in this publication. Keep an eye out for special announcements as the year goes on. In addition, Jeff McGill has been retained to produce a book detailing the history of our Club and I am excited by what I have seen of it so far. We had another successful year in 2017/18. The details of our Club’s financial performance can be found in the Annual Report. We were able to donate around one and a half million dollars in cash to various charities, schools and sporting clubs, again a level which is well above that legislated for community assistance. This figure of course doesn’t account for the many sponsorships we undertake nor for the non-cash support we provide to many different groups and individuals in our community. The above cash donation figure is a little higher than the previous year, with our schools being the main recipients along with increases to many charities and community groups. Debt levels have fluctuated due to the renovations we are undertaking but our debt profile remains well within manageable levels. Generally the results are very pleasing and I am optimistic about the future. I have previously mentioned we were working towards extensions to our hotel, including the addition of 40 odd rooms, the renovation of the existing hotel and conference rooms and the addition of function space.

This work, whilst a little delayed is now tracking towards completion. I am sure you will be very pleased with the new look which should be finalised in early November. A number of other projects are also under consideration by the Board and should span several years if they go forward. More news on that as our plans progress. Members may be aware that the Club recently purchased the Emily Cottage and Kendall Mill sites, both near to our Club. The Kendall Mill site is probably more commonly now known as the old Fishers Ghost restaurant site. These were strategic purchases and plans for their future are still in the very early stages. Both old buildings will be initially assessed by architects who will report back on renovation needs and, in the case of the old Mill, just how much damage the fire of some years ago did to the structure. Meanwhile at the Golf Club the course is again starting to feel the pinch of the state wide drought. The Course Superintendent and his staff are working hard to keep the course as green as they can while we look at longer term options in relation to water supply. The club itself is still proving to be very popular as a dining experience and continues to grow its market. Feedback has been consistently positive. The management and staff are doing a great job to provide a venue which is so popular with members and guests. Our recent annual Communion Mass and luncheon was again a huge success. The mass was this year held at St John the Evangelist parish in Campbelltown in celebration of our 50th operating birthday and was well attended with our schools again providing wonderful inspiration for those in attendance. The luncheon held afterwards in The CUBE was a joyous occasion with 600 people attending and a lot of old friendships were renewed. Tom Burlinson entertained the crowd and proved to be a very popular choice. Thanks to Father Ho for his hospitality on the day and to our new Bishop Brian Mascord for his presence and support. These occasions seem to be getting bigger and better each year and I’d encourage anyone who is able to come along next year and see what it is all about. In closing, as always thank you to members for your loyal support and I trust you continue to enjoy the benefits provided by your King of Clubs. I’d like to wish all members all the best for Christmas and the New Year. I sincerely hope you have a safe and happy festive season.

Club Reports

FROM tHE GENERAL MANAGER MICHAEL LAVORATO

I trust that you have been well and have managed to keep warm throughout this particularly long and cold winter. The good news is that Spring has arrived and with it marks the commencement of a busy and exciting time around the Club. 2018 is a significant year in that it coincides with the anniversary of the club opening it’s doors on 5th December 1968. From the 17th October the club will be counting down with 50 days of celebrations, promotions, activities and excitement. On pages 6 and 7 of this edition of Superstar Magazine – you find details of just how you can share in all the fun. I also encourage you to connect with our Facebook page where you will find videos and pictures that span the 5 decades of the Club. You never know – you might just recognise yourself, a family member or friend. It’s also a great way to receive regular updates as well as sharing in the journey towards this important milestone. As I announced in a previous edition, Campbelltown Catholic Club has been striving to become a White Ribbon Accredited work place. Violence against women continues to be a serious, prevalent and preventable issue in Australia. “On average one woman in Australia is killed every week by a current or former partner”. As a leader in the local business community we’re determined to make a difference by promoting respectful relationships and gender equality within the workplace and broader community and demonstrating a culture of zero tolerance to violence against women.

As part of this process the Club established a White Ribbon Committee who work collaboratively with a wide range of Domestic Violence (DV) advocacy groups in the local area. The White Ribbon Committee has been instrumental in organising a range of Domestic Violence initiatives including a Youth Forum on Domestic Violence and Healthy Relationships with guest speaker/domestic violence survivor Anj Barker. We have also established a Safe-T- Card program which is featured on page 18 of this edition. I am pleased to advise that our formal submission for White Ribbon accreditation was lodged on 30 August. This now enters an intense assessment phase and we anticipate a positive result by late November. Look out for announcements around that time on this significant achievement Last year Campbelltown Catholic Club staff engaged in Learning Links ‘Reading for Life” program. Staff underwent training and provide oneon-one support to primary school children with reading difficulties. For many of these kids the program can be life changing. Without reading and literacy skills they are at a high risk of disengaging as they enter High School so it’s incredibly important that we help these kids in their formative years. I am pleased to advise that the Club has increased its commitment to the Learning links program for 2018 funding both a Reading and Counting for life program at Campbelltown Public School. I’ll also be joining our staff volunteers and going back to school to help in the program. President David Olsson in his column announced that the Club enjoyed a very good trading result for the year ended 30th June 2018. The details of this result can be found in our Annual Report which can be accessed via the Club Website. I would like to thank the directors of the club for their vision, support of the execution of the strategies required to ensure our great club continues to be financially viable, relevant in these modern times and a leader in the community. I am proud to lead a group of hard working and committed staff members who do great work for our members and guests across all our businesses – every single day. Finally – thank you to our members for your ongoing support and loyalty. It is always appreciated and never taken for granted.

THE FUTURE IS LOOKING BRIGHT This year we are celebrating the Clubs 50th Anniversary. From humble beginnings in 1968 in the new suburb of Campbelltown, the Club has grown with the community and our staff and members have been key to our success. Along with celebrating our history, this milestone provides a great opportunity to look to the future. As we celebrate our Anniversary, we will be unveiling a brand-new logo that will see us into the next chapter of the Club. The goal will be a modern approach that also links to our past. You will also see a new direction in our Marketing with a stronger focus on digital mediums, building content that connects with our community and building stronger relationships through social media. The Marketing team are also in the process of building a new Club website that will take our online presence to a new level. Keep your eye out for two new projects in particular – the canning of a special edition 50th Anniversary Pale Ale from OTIS Brewing Co and the production of a new online cooking show for kids and families in our community. Exciting times ahead...

Club Reports

FROM tHE WELFARE director ALAN SCOTT

Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of Superstar 2018. On Sunday 12 August 2018, the Club celebrated its 54th Annual Mass and Communion Luncheon. The Mass was concelebrated by our new Bishop Brian Mascord DD in conjunction with Parish Priest of St John the Evangelist Church, Fr John Ho. It was wonderful to see the Church full to the brim for this great celebration of the Mass. This year, our 50th year of the Club operation, the luncheon in The CUBE was a sold-out event and from comments made on the day was said to have been the best day ever. It was very special to look back on where we’ve come from in 50 years of club trading and celebrate what we’ve achieved within the Macarthur Community over that time. Many of our Foundation Members were able to join us for this celebration. Over the past few months, I have had the privilege of meeting with and looking over the new book on the 50-year history of the Club with Jeff McGill, who has been commissioned to put this together. I am a proud 50 year Member of the Club (I think I joined when I was in 6th Class at St John’s). It has been amazing to look back and read about the different stages of the Club’s growth. The one thing that has remained constant during all this time is the many lifelong friendships made and are still being made through the many sporting and internal clubs over 50 years. When the new book is printed in a few months time I recommend this to you as a great read from the comprehensive work of great wordsmith, Jeff McGill. In the last edition I hinted that we weren’t finished welcoming babies of Director’s children and now I can happily report that our Club President, David Olsson and his wife Rosemary are the proud grandparents of Bodhi David, born to their daughter Catherine and her partner Aaron. Congratulations to all the family.

1990’s

2000’s

Former Club Director, Bernie McGrath and his wife Therese celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in our Kyubi Restaurant on 19 April 2018 with family and friends present to celebrate this auspicious occasion. Congratulations Bernie & Therese. A milestone birthday was celebrated by Colleen Egelton on 8 May 2018 when Colleen turned 93 years young. Well done Colleen. Another significant celebration was held for Joan Seymour who celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends on 5 August 2018. On a sadder note, long time Member and great club man, Kevin Nott, passed away on 31 May 2018 after a long battle with cancer. Kevin was a Foundation Member of the ‘infamous’ Cork Club where he held the position of President for 31 years. We extend our sincere sympathies to his wife Barbara and all the family. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Geoffrey Lamont who passed away on 2 March 2018. Geoff was a great club Member, having been involved with the Collegians RLFC and Cork Club. Geoff was one of our great characters and will be sadly missed. Entertainer Dee Donavan OAM passed away on 9th July. Dee regularly compered ‘Morning Melodies’ at The CUBE. Known as The Silver Baron because of his silver hair, he was also rightly called “The Gentleman of Showbiz”. He was an accomplished MC, Comic, Vocalist and Musician, and was very popular with many Members. Another recent loss was the passing on 28 July 2018 of Br Charles Aquilina fms, after a long illness. Br Charles was a great friend of the Club and his wide circle of friendships was mentioned at his Memorial Mass when one year, Br Ernest, also from St Gregory’s Community, offered to help Br Charles write his Christmas Cards and there were over 240 cards sent out, such was his great and valued friendship circle. Our thoughts and prayers are also extended to the families of other Members who have passed away recently. The Vale list appears further in this edition of Superstar. May they all rest in peace. Should any Member have an announcement, significant achievement or celebration they would like to share in the next edition of Superstar, please feel free to leave details with our wonderful Club Receptionists who will pass this information on to me. We are always looking for good new stories. As we head towards the festive season I wish all Members a safe, happy and blessed Christmas and look forward to seeing you around the Club over the coming months. Don’t forget to check out the entertainment lineup we have in store for our 50th year Celebrations.

The Catholic Club of 1968 could easily fit into the foyer of today’s Catholic Club. So, as we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary in December 2018, we offer this pictorial overview of how the Club has grown over the decades. Our original 1968 building stood where Kids Kingdom and part of Kings Food Court stands today, and basically grew outwards north and east. For example, older members will recall that the window-lined McGoldrick Dining Room of the late 1970s was at the front of the building, but now that same space is approximately today’s Samba Cafe – well inside. The second floor of the Club was added in 1989, and it was the grand extensions of 1994-95 that gave the club its present facade. And, of course, with The CUBE, Rydges, Aquafit and Quondong, the “Club Precinct” now stretches far beyond that original starting point of the 1960’s.

Safe-T-Card program

“On average one woman in Australia is killed every week by a current or former partner” Shocked by the high local statistics surrounding domestic violence, Campbelltown Catholic Club is setting out to make a real difference. Violence against women is a serious, prevalent and preventable issue in Australia. As a leader in the local business community we’re determined to make a difference on this issue. Campbelltown Catholic Club is proudly working towards a White Ribbon Accredited work place. We’re promoting respectful relationships and gender equality within the workplace and broader community and demonstrating a culture of zero tolerance to violence against women. As part of this process the Club has established a White Ribbon Committee and is working collaboratively with a wide range of Domestic Violence (DV) advocacy groups in the local area. The White Ribbon Committee has been instrumental in organising a range of Domestic Violence initiatives including the Safe-T-Card program. This project is specifically targeted to help Women in the highest risk category of Domestic Violence. The Club has provided ten hi-tech SafeT-Cards and is working in close collaboration with Macarthur Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service to identify and distribute these potentially lifesaving devices.

Being 100% Verified Duress Alarm, reduces the NSW Police Resources being wasted on False Alarms and ensures Women at the greatest risk receive immediate attention

When the alarm is activated the device emits a discrete pulse (heart Beat) every 10 seconds so the victim knows the call centre is listening in and help is on its way.

Tanya Whitehouse of the Macarthur Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service tells us: “Women at the most risk now have a very clear option for their safety; They don’t have to get to their phone to dial 000, this is something they actually wear and all they have to do is press it… if he pulls it off, it will alarm, it even has a GPS function. “When we did five month surveys every woman said they felt safer’’ “Credit to the Catholic Club for identifying this need, and the results are really clear. “This is something we would normally have to apply to Victim Services for, and that can take up to two months, so for two months those women are highly vulnerable, so the Catholic Club’s help in this vital stage is huge and has made such a difference to women.” The Safe-T-Card program commenced in August 2017 with the Club committing to fully fund 10 Safe-T-Card devices for 3 years. In the first 6 months 15 women have accessed the device.

Here’s how it works. The Safe-T-Card device is worn around the neck similar to an ID Card. •

One press of the button activates a Red Alert and the device connects with a call centre where operators can listen live to what is being recorded on the device. This can also be used for evidence at a later date. The Safe-T-Card operators verify the Duress by listening to the aggression that is taking place and can then relay that information and the exact location to the Police from the GPS within the device.

do something day 2018 Injured koalas needing to be nursed back to health will have a handy supply of food, thanks to Campbelltown Catholic Club. Club staffers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty in July for ‘Do Something Day’ and planted $1,000 of eucalyptus trees in Pinaroo Reserve, Bradbury. Once grown, these carefully-chosen food tree species will be harvested. “The idea is for Sydney Wildlife and WIRES to come here and, in a couple of years’ time, take the top of the trees,” said Mitchell Clark, Campbelltown Council’s Environmental Project Officer (Ecological Protection). “Unfortunately we have a lot of koalas that get struck by vehicles, or attacked by dogs, and these trees will provide a future food source for them.” Our staff were also treated to a tour at the end of the day where they were lucky enough to spot a koala in its habitat at Ruse. It wasn’t the only thing done by the Club on Do Something Day. We also supported the St Vincent de Paul Nagle Family Care and Support Centre by acting as a collection point for a huge stack of new or slightlyused warm winter clothing. From collection points at the Catholic Club, Campbelltown Golf Club and Aquafit Health Fitness Wellbeing we received over 40 bags of clothing,

OUT & ABOUT 1.

On Tuesday 31 July during a Personal Expression session, we were treated to a sneak peek of some of the projects from local school students participating in this year’s Max Potential Program. Built on coaching, goals, and the tools needed to make a difference, this year’s program culminated with a grand Showcase of projects at The CUBE on Tuesday 18 September.

Club Piano Bar favourite and homegrown talent Lauren Azar has experienced a whirlwind ride recently, joining the Pink Beautiful Trauma World Tour in August for the Sydney and Brisbane leg of the Australian shows. The soulful singer united with local group sensation ‘The Rubens who were selected by Pink herself to be the nation’s Support Act for the tour. Lauren said “It has been the wildest ride. The best part is performing such an incredible song with your mates in front of thousands of people. The Rubens set is so electric to watch and they smash every show. At a Pink concert, everyone in that arena is a part of the show. The audience are so supportive of you, and that’s testament to the artist she is. I have savoured every moment and am so inspired now to make more music and play more shows.” Catch Lauren at the Club Piano Bar on Friday 26 October from 6pm.

Looking Back

LOOKING to our past & ou In the 1980’s, the Club commissioned local artist Sandy Inglis, to paint this image of Kendall’s Mill – one of Campbelltown’s most historic landmarks – as it looked in its 1840’s heyday. Little did we know that more than three decades later the Club would be stepping in again...to help preserve the same site in a realistic, not just a virtual, sense. Club president David Olsson announced the purchase of the site – best known as “the old Fisher’s Ghost Restaurant” – at a packed annual Communion Luncheon at The CUBE on Sunday 12 August. With that purchase, comes great responsibility, which is why David Olsson says it is too early yet for solid plans. “The first thing we’ll do is get some architects in there to have a look at the old mill site, just to see what the situation is after the fire,” Mr Olsson said. The site has been a ruin since a blaze tore through the structure in 2005. “Our priority at this point is simply to secure the site. I can say that Campbelltown Council is very happy that we’ve bought the site, and everyone I’ve spoken with so far seems ecstatic.” Indeed, Mayor George Brticevic told the Campbelltown-Macarthur Advertiser the Catholic Club’s strong track record – such as the painstaking restoration of the 1840 Quondong building – meant it was an “ideal” purchaser. Kay Hayes, president of Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society, called the news brilliant. “We’re so pleased this site has been purchased by an organisation known to support local heritage and history,” Mrs Hayes said. The flood of warm social media feedback is also typified by this example: “So grateful to the Campbelltown Catholic Club. They understand what this means to us. They understand the significance of our heritage buildings.” For those of you not aware of the history of the site: Colonial Campbelltown was covered by golden wheat fields, with windmills dotting the local hills. But, the problem with windmills is that they need wind. So, Laurence Kendall, uncle of the famous poet Henry Kendall, erected a steam-powered mill at the bottom of the main street, bringing the Industrial Revolution to Macarthur. Sandy Inglis’ artwork shows how James Bocking ran a bakery and store in the attached mill-house. Things were booming until “rust” – a type of fungal disease – wiped out the local wheat, forcing our

ur future WITH JEFF MCGILL farmers to switch to dairying, and the mill fell silent. In the 1920’s, Dr William Mawson (namesake of Campbelltown’s local park) pulled down the mill and used the bricks to erect the old Macquarie Cinema, but the old mill-house was renovated as Milby Private Maternity Hospital, where many locals were born. Then, by the 1970’s, it had become the Fisher’s Ghost Restaurant. Club CEO Michael Lavorato pointed to the restoration of Quondong and said, the track record is strong. “I look forward to identifying with the Club board a great use for the property for years to come.”

30 Under 30

exceptional recognition Kyubi Modern Asian Dining Restaurant Supervisor Madeleine Salter has been hailed as one of the most exciting young restaurant managers in NSW.

The Foodservice Industry Association has included her on its inaugural ‘30 Under 30’ list – an awards program to showcase the rising generation of hospitality professionals. “We combed the country to find the best and the brightest under 30’s, and were staggered by what we found,” an awards spokesman said. Madeleine’s achievement is even more impressive when you consider that she is way, way under 30 – in fact, she’s only 21. Yet the proud Campbelltown girl, who has just completed a Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management, is standing out from the pack. “I love my job,” Madeleine says, as she folds napkins with the precision of an origami master, selects fine wines, and carefully rosters her staff based on their strengths in personality, skill and experience. “I believe we will see Kyubi become the first hatted restaurant in Macarthur within the next five years,” she added with great confidence. “I would be delighted to lead the team into this award.”

36

Campbelltown Catholic Club kingofclubs.com.au

Madeleine has certainly got expert support, as she is mentored by Peter Sheppard, the previous owner of hatted restaurant, Caveau, in Wollongong, and now overseeing culinary development at Campbelltown Catholic Club. Madeleine has been learning on-the-job at the Catholic Club while studying, working her way around different areas over the past 4 years including function preparation, bar work, cafe, food court as well as the new restaurants. “I started at the bottom, washing dishes and clearing plates in the bistro, working my way up to supervising staff and overseeing Kyubi,” she said. “At first, some were sceptical about me being so young, especially the older waitstaff.” But now Madeleine is making her mark as Kyubi continues to challenge pre-conceived notions of what “club food” means.

Kokoda Trail

Kokoda youth leadership challenge When you’ve just crossed Papua New Guinea’s the Owen Stanley Mountains, the big staircase outside The Catho suddenly doesn’t look so big. Club CEO Michael Lavorato was on hand to welcome back Melanie Tincknell and Craig Butler – the latest Catholic Club staffers to walk the famous Kokoda Track. “It was a lot tougher than I thought it would be, a real mental challenge,” said Craig, our assistant IT Manager. “Once your legs start aching it’s very difficult to do that day after day.” “But it was good to learn more about the individual battles of the campaign in 1942 and meet some of the descendants of the fuzzy wuzzy angels. “It also taught me that we’re more capable than we understand, when put in situation where you have to dig deep and achieve something, you can do it, whereas in our day-to-day lives a lot of people don’t believe in themselves.” Melanie, one of our gaming attendants, said it wasn’t just the mental and historic lessons, but the cultural ones. “Seeing the way the villagers still live really hit home, so not having phones and everything else like that on the trip was quite nice,” she said. “Seeing how simply they live compared to how we do.” “Thank you to the Catholic Club and Board of Directors for sending us, it was a great privilege to walk in the footsteps of the young soldiers who fought at Kokoda to keep us safe.” Other staffers to take up the challenge in recent years have included Mitch Dwyer, Maddie Rullis, Amanda Lauric, Celeste Raack, Jacelyn Crofts, Luke Cantrill and Makedonka Stoilova.

We do try to look after each other and it’s been a busy year in that respect, with Marguerite Davidson well on the mend, and Kay Hough, Hans Preiss and Doug Cooke progressing well after surgery. We wish Pat Lewis all the best with her progress, too. One of the main reasons for our club’s success… Our social events! Apart from celebrating everyone’s birthday, we also party for the Big 0 Birthdays (40, 50, 60…) in a big way too. Lesley and Mark Thompson are the architects of our social calendar and don’t they do a great job. While we’re here crowing about how good a club we are, we’d like to congratulate the Campbelltown Catholic Club on their 50-year anniversary – well done and thank you for supporting our community! Sunday morning and oh what a day ahead... It will set you up for the week ahead. We can take you all the way to international competitive swims, or just getting to 25m, then 50m, then… We have ladies’ swims, fitness swims, distance swims – and lots of social events.

Club Champion Victor Libdy shows his form at Homebush Olympic Pool

There was an ad on TV a year or ten ago that started with the line, “Sunday morning and oh what a day ahead”. It was an ad for Shell Petrol – but I sing it to myself every Sunday morning. Why? Because Sunday morning is our club swim day and it is a simply wonderful way to start the day! Ok, yes, not for everyone, especially a Sunday, but read on, I’ll try to convince you.

Check us out on the web or Facebook. Swimming; it’s gentle on your body while getting you fit and healthy. Cost is minimal (basically a swimming costume and pool entry) but the benefits are endless. Trust me, I’m not a politician. www.campbelltownmasters.org.au

‘Fun, friendship, fitness’ – These are the simple aims of our club, with the emphasis on fun and friendship; we have a great time trying to get, um, fit, too. The swim races cover all distances and you compete against yourself. What? Yes, the races are handicapped so you compete against your own times. You improve your time, you win the race, simple. Our name, admittedly, is a little confusing: we’re not ‘Masters’, rather ‘Adult’ swimmers. We certainly aren’t ex-Olympic swimmers! Some have struggled to swim one lap when they first join but, with coaching and encouragement, we surprise ourselves with what we can achieve. Since the last Superstar, we have held our Annual Presentation, kindly hosted by Heather and Terry Rouen. In a very interesting year, the top two places for the Club Championship came down to the last few weeks. Because we all help each other, these two swimmers swapped hints and ideas on how to improve. Incredible! Victor Libdy charged to the front with just one week remaining to win one of the closest championships ever. Other winners on our presentation day were Jim Pelosa for Club Attendance, Victor Libdy for Carnival Attendance, Heather Rouen for Club Spirit, Lesley Thompson for Encouragement, Victor Libdy again (he was the big winner from 2017) for Most Improved and Lesley Keogh as our newest National Endurance Swimming Champion. Of course, every one of our Club Members is an Australian endurance swimming champion, too! Campbelltown won the National Award for the second consecutive year to go with our (are you sitting down?) 18 consecutive years as NSW Champions. And here’s the good bit: members who may have struggled with 25m when they joined were huge contributors to our winning points tally! “Sunday morning…” – It’s an early start (7.30am) at Bradbury Pool, but we love it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lesley Thompson receives the Club Encouragement Award from Greg Jacques

CAMDEN CATS SENIOR AFL CLUB The 2018 season was a historic one for the leading AFL club in the Macarthur region; with the Camden Cats Senior AFL Club fielding an AFL Sydney Premier Division side for the first time and fielding a club record six men’s and women’s teams in the AFL Sydney Competition (continuing the club’s rapid growth over the last five years). The Camden Cats would firstly like to extend its gratitude to the Campbelltown Catholic Club whose 2018 sponsorship enabled the purchase a new set of playing jumpers and equipment for our newly formed Premier Division side (pictured).

Speaking of other ways… It’s not just Sundays, though. A small group meet on Wednesdays at Bradbury from 11am to about 1pm for some easy catch-up swims and some easy catch-up coffees. Four members trained hard for the National Championships in Perth, with young gun Suzie Haddad, Annie Cooke, Lindsay Risk and Russell McLeod making the trip. Annie and Russ were medal winners. Annie went a step further to the World Championships and returned victorious in her pet event, backstroke.

Team Premier Division

Sub Clubs The season started in perfect fashion for our Premier Division side with a 58-point opening round win against Western Suburbs. The Cats’ first grade side would go on to win five games in our first season at the highest level; including claiming the scalp of second-placed UNSW Eastern Suburbs at Henson Park. The losing of three home games by under a goal within a few weeks of each other cost us dearly mid-season; just as we were starting to build some momentum. But even the narrow losses showed that we were able to match it with the best teams in the competition. The club was extremely competitive in our first season in the top flight of the AFL Sydney competition; with plenty for us to build on for the 2019 season. The Camden Cats women’s side were a stand-out during the 2018 home and away season; improving dramatically from last year. The women’s side finished Minor Premiers with 15 wins and 1 loss. At time of writing they are preparing for their first finals game against arch-rival HolroydParramatta for a place in the Grand Final. Having finished 8th last season, the improvement of the team has been exponential, and we can’t wait to see how they go during their first finals campaign. Good luck ladies! Our AFL Sydney Division 3 side saw over 80 players pull on the Cats jersey this year, many playing AFL for the first time as soccer or rugby converts. The club’s “fourth grade” side had an outstanding season under the guidance of new coach Callum Robinson, winning games, having fun, and improving their skills as individuals and as a team. They finished the home and away season as Minor Premiers and at time of writing are about to get their finals assault underway. Good luck gents! The Camden Cats “third grade” side has continued its winning ways during the 2018 season under the guidance of Coach Wheeler; finishing third (on percentage) at the end of the home and away rounds. His simple mantras of “positivity, commitment and fun” have ensured continued success for his charges this year. At the time of writing, Division 2 are preparing to play finals for the second successive season, aiming to go one better this year after finishing Runners Up in 2017. All the best! The club’s Premier Division Reserves and Division One Under 19’s sides were both very competitive during the season. Both missed out on a finals berth, but they each played an attractive brand of footy and were extremely competitive; taking it up to some of the top sides in the AFL Sydney competition. As a club, we are very proud of their efforts and are already excited about season 2019. If you or somebody you know is interested in playing AFL at the Camden Cats in 2019, please contact Joshua Leys (0420 279 293) or Greg McGuiness (0413 257 516). Alternatively, you can visit the Camden Cats Website, Facebook Page (Camden Cats Senior AFL) or follow us on Twitter @CatsAFL for more information. Pre-season for the 2019 AFL season will officially get underway in late-January, though you might see a few dedicated players running the streets of Harrington Park as early as November. Games are played on Saturday morning or afternoons from April to September, with training held on weeknights from 7pm. Camden has a family-friendly, social and inclusive club culture that welcomes new players from all walks of life. The club is looking forward to the biggest night on its annual calendar; with the Camden Cats Club Presentation Night coming up on Saturday 20 October at the Campbelltown Catholic Club. We look forward to the on-going support of the Campbelltown Catholic Club and its members in season 2019 and thank you for your support this year.

CCC FISHING CLUB The Fishing Club had been reasonably active earlier in the year with several members staying at Greenwell Point. Reef fishing was a bit hit and miss but there were plenty of good size flathead on the sand south of the river entrance. Rob Cook was lucky enough to catch a nice Kingfish which ended up being the largest fish for the year. Four of our members spent a few days fishing on a charter boat out of South West Rocks with plenty of reef fish taken including Snapper and Pearl Perch (one of the best eating fish in the ocean). Unfortunately, the water was too cold and dirty for the usual catch of Spotted Mackerel and the current was too strong to chase the Dolphin fish around the FAD. Several trips have been arranged to Greenwell point throughout winter with winds playing havoc with our attempts to get out. On the few occasions that we did manage to get the boats wet we were rewarded with some nice fish including plenty of Flathead with one memorable catch being a PB Snapper of 2.3Kg for Phil Russo. July saw our annual Christmas In July Dinner/Presentation Night which was a huge success, the ladies did a fantastic job with the catering but a special thanks must go to Natalie and Wayne Harrison for providing the venue. Some of the major award winners for this year were Mark Shanley (Champion Angler), Natalie Harrison (Champion Lady Angler), John Van Heeswyk (Champion Boat) and Rob Cook (Largest Fish). We are all looking forward to or annual 8-day trip to Ulladulla in late October, hopefully the Snapper will be as plentiful as previous years. As always, the CCC Fishing Club welcomes families as well as singles who may be into spending quality time on the water with likeminded people. We meet at the Catholic Club on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm.

CCC SOCIAL GOLF CLUB Campbelltown Catholic Club Social Golf Club finalised another successful season with our AGM and Presentation Dinner at the Catholic Club on Sunday 5th August 2018. Special guests for the evening were Life Members Jim Dengate, President Alan Smith and Betty Berthon, a Memorial Trophy presenter. Apologies from Arthur Smith and Campbelltown Catholic Club Directors who were unable to attend. The AGM was well attended with members having an input into the running of their club. President Alan Smith in his report noted the trophy cabinet was not a pretty site with only the Association Shield in the cabinet. Committee members for the coming year are: - Alan Smith (President), Paul Gerrard (Vice President), Bob Piefke (Treasurer), Rod Kennedy (Secretary), Phill Wright (Captain), Peter Rogers (Handicapper). Life Member Jim Dengate officiated for Committee and Club Person of the Year elections. Congratulations to Rod Kennedy for being voted the Club Person of the Year. Thank you, Jim, for your time and guidance given to the golfers. The match play title goes this year to Paul Weidenhofer, who defeated Bob Piefke. The foursomes event this year was changed to a 2BBB which was won by Jeff Wright & Liam Murphy - Congratulations to the winners. The Roy Murray Trophy went to Matt Greene (Junior), with a very nice score of 59 Nett, followed by Gary Garven with a 66 Nett. The Max Berthon Memorial went to Wayne Golby on a countback, with a very impressive score of 43pts, closely followed by Matt Greene with 43pts. The President Versus Captains Trophy this year went to the Presidents team, with a resounding victory of 470 points to the Presidents 442 points, congratulations to Al Smith and his team.

COLLEGIANS BRIDGE CLUB Playing cards is a fun activity that many of us grew up doing. Bridge, however, is not like any other card game, it’s the ultimate card game - not easy, but for most people that’s its very appeal.

The Club Championships were played in some excellent weather conditions which led to some good scores being recorded. The Club Champion was a close contest which was won by Phil Wright with a scratch score of 231. Congratulations on winning this coveted title. A Grade Champion was won by Shane Pulbrook with a Net score of 203, Runner-Up was Rod Kennedy with a Net score of 207. B Grade Champion was won by Matt Greene (Junior), with a Net score of 205, Runner-Up was Rob Greene with a Net score of 209. C Grade Champion was won by Peter Rogers with a Net score of 211; Runner-Up was Peter Copus with a Net score of 226. Congratulations to all players on their efforts throughout the championships. The Cock of the Walk (match play) competition has just begun, with last year’s winner unable to play. First round winners were Rod Kennedy, defeating Peter Rogers 5 & 4, Steve Kemp, defeating Phil Wright 6 & 5, Matt Greene (Junior), defeating Al Smith 4 & 3, Bob Piefke, defeating Nick Viskovich 2 & 1, David Windeyer, defeating Shane Pulbrook, Rob Green, defeating Reece Pulbrook (Junior) 1 up, Wayne Parked, defeating Jeff Wright 2 & 1, and Mark Smith defeating Elwyn Ward 4 & 3. It is good to see the juniors in our club succeeding, keep up the practice as it is already starting to pay off. Our club welcomes all players no matter what your ability is and in particular we would like to see ladies and juniors participate in the great social atmosphere that exists at this club. The committee and members greatly appreciate the support received from The Catholic Club, which has been ongoing since our inception in 1969. Most games are played fortnightly early on a Sunday morning and those interested in joining can access our website www.cathogolfers.com.au or through the link on the Catholic Club website. Until next report, enjoy your golf and keep swinging!

You play in pairs, against other pairs. During the game, we follow detailed movement charts depending on how many people are there and the type of competition we are playing. The Director keeps the game moving smoothly and decides on any issues that may arise. Unlike other places, our Club is increasing in membership, due in part to new people attending the beginner classes that we run once or twice per year and experienced players moving into the area. We’ve recently held two competitions. Renate and Richard Riedel took out the Kellerman Pairs, named after Dr Gordon Kellerman, one of the founders of our club and Christine Derrig and Lucia Mendonca won the Glad Ray Pairs, which honours one of our favourite late members who played well into her 90’s. Our next upcoming event is the Tuesday night Club Team Championships which will be held over three consecutive weeks. We are a friendly group and that means members come together for lots of informal activities as well as the social club events sponsored by the club. We’re serious about our bridge but we love having fun. If you are interested in learning to play we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Ted Lilliss, Club President on 0419 255 162.

CCC SNOOKER CLUB We held our AGM early this year and last year’s committee was reelected. This year however David McDonald was not present as he is no longer our representative on the sports council, so we would like to thank him for all the years he has attended our meetings and acted as our representative. Our thanks now go to Steve Carter who attended our meeting as our new representative and to act as returning officer. We finished last year with comps at Club Marconi and at Rooty Hill RSL, which was a new venue for us and we had another new venue last year with a trip to Wests Leagues Club at Unanderra, so we are still getting out and about and still with varying fortunes; we had a win at Marconi but got trounced at Rooty Hill. So far this year we have been to Revesby Workers Club, then another new venue at the Shellharbour Workers Club and our latest trip was yet another new venue at the Guildford Leagues Club, a club that removed their snooker tables some years ago but have now had a purpose-built snooker room constructed and fitted out with four tables. Again, all this travel and playing at various new and old places would not be possible without the backing of the Catholic Club and we thank them for their continued support. We look forward to another year representing the Catholic Club far and wide. To all members of the Catholic Club we again extend an invitation to joins us. We don’t play much but when we do we have a great time. Just get in touch with any of the Committee Members and let us know if you want to come along.

COLLEGIANS CHESS CLUB The 2018 Chess Club Championship was recently completed. The crucial game between Adam and Kerry decided the championship. In a sharp middle game, Kerry sacrificed his queen for three minor pieces, resulting in a crushing position. Leading final scores, 60 minutes each on the clock, six rounds: Kerry Lee 5.5, Adam Grzelak 3.5, Douglas Adams 2 and George Marfutenko 1. We would like to thank the Catholic Club Board of Directors for their generous support of this event. The Chess Club meets every Tuesday at 6 pm. New players are always welcome. Please contact Doug on 0420 477 827.

Sub Clubs MACARTHUR SAINTS RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB Macarthur Saints Junior Rugby League Football Club have experienced a successful 2018 season both on and off the field. This year the club has had over 160 registered players from ages 4 to 14 years old, with 14 teams in total and more than 70 volunteers in a variety of roles. At Macarthur Saints we try to promote a club culture of positivity, striving to make our training and matches enjoyable, fostering a love of our game and promoting skills development and improvement. The biggest improvements we have seen this year have to be in our 3 under 6 teams, we have 6, 5 and 4-year-olds in these teams and they generally start the season with limited skills, and an unpreparedness for cold 7am winter starts. However, by round 16 they are little bundles of enthusiasm, passing and tackling in a blur of blue and gold. Our other non-competitive teams in the 7’s and 8’s age groups have also progressed well, concentrating on team work, learning the rules of the game and fair play. Under 14’s newspaper article

At the other end of the age scale are our under 14’s team, who are currently Macarthur Saints most senior age group. Some of these players have plenty of football experience, first joining us 8 – 10 years ago, and consequently they tend to be the role models for our younger players. We believe it is important to teach our players life lessons along with their fitness/skills training. Our club values hard work and sportsmanship whilst also encouraging our senior players to give back to the local community where possible. In line with this philosophy our Under 14’s team recently gave up some of their precious school holidays time to pack and distribute food hampers for those in the local area who were doing it tough. Working alongside the Rosemeadow/ Ambarvale Community (R.A.C.) Group and Oz Harvest, these young men contributed a helping hand in a well organised and practical exercise, they even managed to get themselves into the local newspaper. The aim was to instil a sense of gratitude within these teenagers, but more importantly, a feeling of satisfaction in supporting a worthy cause and assisting people in need within their local neighbourhood. As this article goes to print we are about to kick off the Junior League Semi-Finals with our clubs’ teams participating in the Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12’s and Under 13’s age groups. We wish our players and coaching staff all the best of luck for the finals and would like to thank all our hard-working volunteers and dedicated sponsors for your

Let’s walk backwards in this report for the last six months of Mountain Devils Bushwalking and Social Club. Starting with the last walk done in Darkes Forest in Dharawal National Park (NP). Michael was the leader and it felt like we were walking with the pioneers, breaking new ground, crossing creeks in icy water on a track that was no longer there. It was exhilarating as all Mike’s walks are. For me another memorable walk was the Starlight’s Track in Nattai NP. A walk that I had waited 12 years to do. Challenging but rewarding when achieved. 7kms down, 7kms up. Lead on Mike to many more bushwalking adventures.

Sub Clubs Two of our newish members Andy and Phil have leapt into the fray leading the group and have taken us to Dharawal NP. down to O’Hare’s Creek and further afield to Blackheath Grand Canyon Track. Also, Fitzroy Falls western rim tracks with views to die for. Also 24 of us had a very sociable picnic in our own Mount Annan Gardens. Phil is about to take a group of us for a week’s walk in the Warrumbungles.

game it was!! Mount Carmel verses Mount Carmel had sisters versing sisters and friends versing friends. A great game that ended with Mount Carmel team 4 heading to the Grand Final to face St Johns as this article goes to print. Once again Mount Carmel has had another successful season of umpiring, proudly lead by our new Umpires Convenor Georgia Sirec. With 3 Grad teams and many of our umpires playing at 12.10pm, Georgia had a battle on her hands to find and swap games for the continuing progression of the amazing Mount Carmel Umpires. Congratulations to Larissa Tomlin and Ameilya Petkovski on achieving their Association 1 Badges. We also had 3 juniors graduate the ‘Have a GO Program’ and they will take their place beside our existing umpires in the future. As finals approached, all the Mount Carmel Umpires nominated for Finals were allocated a game. This is a major achievement for a small club and one we are very proud of. With the Tuesday Night season approaching Mount Carmel hopes to have many of our teams continue into the summer season and continue with their success.

The Snowy Mountains walking trip in April was fantastic. A great farm stay with many walks including the top of Kosciusko and Dead Horse Gap, with 14 walkers led ably by Mike. Harry led us to Curra Moors in RNP, with lovely coastal views and his old favourite along the Cronulla waterfront. A new walk was introduced; a circuit from Maroubra to Malabar and back, following the coast. Rosslyn walked closer to home along the Georges River. Jenny has had us exploring Dobson’s Cave at Buxton and Thirlmere Lakes in a different way through ancient forests and ruins. Lorraine took us to Parramatta to walk along the river to Meadowbank wharf and Kevin led the Two Creeks Walk in Garigal NP, with more great water views and forest, as well as to Mittagong to the Gibbergunyah Reserve. Kerri has led some fun walks combining social aspects as well as the walks. One from Hyde Park to Kirribilli markets, 10kms of enjoyment. Another outing saw the World Press Photo Award Exhibition and Wendy’s Secret Garden at Lavender Bay, this walk continued to Government House for a tour, which the group declared an excellent day. Nena went to Winifred falls in RNP. A large pool at the base of the waterfall was inviting for tired feet. Once again, the 6 months have hurried by with our members, (66 at last count), enjoying great walks and outings with all of us benefiting from not only the physical fitness, but the joy of being with friends. Our club has a range of ages from young to older walkers and all enjoy the camaraderie. Our monthly meeting takes place at the Catholic Club at 7.30pm on the first Monday of the month. Come join us, walk with a registered club. Our website is www.mountaindevils.org.au

MT CARMEL NETBALL CLUB Mount Carmel Netball Association proudly registered eight teams in the 2018 Winter competition. The club had three Junior teams, three Graduate teams and two Senior teams. Out of eight teams, Mount Carmel had four successful teams make the semi-finals. One Junior team, two of our Graduate teams and one Senior team. Our Junior team unfortunately did not make it past the semi-finals. Our senior team won their semi and headed to the finals. Our Senior team was successful in their final and head to the Grand final as this article goes to print. Our club wishes them Good Luck. OVER 50’S SOCIAL CLUB How time flies. We are coming to the close of another great year for the over 50’s Social Club. Our membership has grown immensely, greeting over 45 new members, enjoying our regular indoor bowls or the companionship for a chat and a complimentary cuppa. Our trivia days, which are held every third Sunday of the month are always a fun day with tea, coffee, biscuits, nibbles and light refreshments supplied. Everyone is a winner! Congratulations to Helen Sterland who celebrated her 100th birthday. Helen received a letter and photo from her majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball, congratulating Helen on her very special day. Congratulations Helen from all your friends at the Over 50’s Social Club. Our day trips this year have been a great success. A mystery tour and a BBQ lunch (which unfortunately was a wash-out due to a heavy downpour), but the day ended on a happy note going to the Mittagong RSL, enjoying a lovely hot lunch. A free BBQ lunch and games day was organised at Koshigaya Park to make up for the BBQ day we lost on our mystery tour. We celebrated our birthday for the 33rd year of Over 50’s with a Hawaiian theme, it was terrific to see everyone in their bright colours and wearing a lei. Thank you to Margaret Harris for the birthday cake and palm tree decorations, they looked amazing. Christmas in July was celebrated at Briars Restaurant in Bowral with a traditional hot lunch, followed by Christmas pudding and custard. We travelled to the Sydney Bus Museum at Leichhardt, bringing back a lot of fond memories for us all, and enjoyed a buffet lunch at Ashfield RSL. On our last bus trip for the year we travelled to the Arms of Australia Museum at Penrith, enjoying a Devonshire tea, including a buffet lunch at Penrith RSL. last of all our annual holiday in October, we will be travelling to Albury, Bendigo and Ballarat, visiting many great attractions.

Sub Clubs ST JOHNS NETBALL CLUB Wow, what a season! St Johns again registered 10 teams throughout the Campbelltown District Netball Association. The Club was represented in the following grades: 8 Red, 10B, 11A/B, 12B, 13C, 14B, 15B, Graduate C, Division 11 & Division 3. From our teams above, we managed to have six teams play semi-final netball. Our Grad C side went straight through to the Grand Final and a further four teams played in the finals. Our 13C & 15B sides went down despite playing great games, leaving us three teams to play in their respective Grand Finals. Grand Final day arrived with our 10B side playing first at 8:30am. After finishing the regular season in 3rd place, the girls were up against the 1st place side. They started the game in sensational fashion and were able to hold off their fast-finishing opponents to claim the Premiership with a 20 – 17 victory. Next up were our Graduate C side at 12:10pm. These girls finished the regular season in 1st place and were up against the 2nd place side in the Grand Final. Our girls started fast, held a nine-goal lead after the first quarter, and were never in trouble. The girls increased their lead at every break and in the end, ran out 46 – 26 winners to claim the Premiership. Finally, we came to our Division 3 side who were on court at 1:40pm. Our Division 3 girls had finished the regular season in 4th place. They defeated 1st placed team the previous week in the final to book their place in the Grand Final and were now up against the 2nd placed side. Our girls started a little slow until a controversial “own goal” was awarded to our opponents. (There are no own goals in netball – it should have been play on). This fired the girls up and they started slowly reeling in the lead. Down 3 at the first break, down 2 at the half, then at the end of the third quarter they girls were in front by 1 and held on for a 38 – 36 victory to claim the Premiership. With talk of retirement for some of the girls, this was a fitting result for the team.

Thanks to all the parents who made the coaches jobs easier by your efforts of ensuring the girls were at training and down at the games on time each week. A special mention to the parents of our girls in the sides that were notably over-graded this season. The club could understand your frustration, but we were also pleased that you continued to bring your girls every week to the game. A big thank you to all involved! We must thank a very special organisation who supported the Club this Season. Little Elves Childcare Centre (Bargo) for continuing their sponsorship and we also welcomed on board Sports2U (Leumeah), GB Painting, Salute` Restaurant (Ingleburn RSL), F & A Scarcella Roadfreight Transport and Cherry Apparel. Their support was greatly appreciated. Finally, we would like to thank the Campbelltown Catholic Club for their continued support. Without the many years of support from the CCC some of our families may never have had the opportunity to play netball. For the diary: 21st October: Junior Presentation Day Sunday at the Campbelltown Catholic Club, 19th November: Annual General Meeting at the Campbelltown Catholic Club, and late January 2019 Registrations commence (Please check the website closer to the date). You can keep up to date with our upcoming events via our Website: stjohnsnetballclub.com or our Facebook Page: facebook.com/ stjohnsnetballclub/. The Club is very proud of all our players and the way they play the game. With the experiences gained this season it should place our teams in a good position for 2019, and we look forward to another successful season.

A big thank you to those who scored during the finals. It is not an easy job sitting away from everyone and just watching the scoreboard. However, especially in the close games, your contribution cannot be understated. Whilst the Club was pleased to achieve Premiership success in three grades this season, our other sides all contributed to a successful season. Having six teams play finals netball was a great achievement in itself. The gradings and late regrading by the CDNA this season disadvantaged us. This directly affected a couple of our junior teams. However, to their credit, the girls turned up every week, gave their all in the games and at training and are keen to back up again next season. These girls are a credit to their families.

10B Premiers

Division 3 Premiers

We had a solid bank of umpires this season. Only twice did the club need to use other club’s umpires to fulfil our duties. We were able to lend our umpires out to CDNA & other clubs on a regular basis. On the Representative front with our umpires: We had Brooke McGovern umpire at the CDNA Rep Carnival and the CDNA Club Gala Day. Olivia Sheppard also umpired at the CDNA Club Gala Day. We had Erin McGovern selected to the SWSAS program for her umpiring. Erin umpired in Newcastle for the Academy Games in April this year and was awarded the coaches recognition for her umpiring at the recent SWSAS Gala dinner. Erin again umpired at the State Age Carnival this season.

Grad C Premiers

We had the following umpires chosen throughout the finals: With Tara Stephens & Trevor Williams umpiring the semi-finals. We had Maddie Phillips umpire a final & grand-final, whist Damian McGovern and Kathleen Spence umpired through the semi-finals, finals & grand-finals. Our coaches and managers did an outstanding job again this season.
