From The Chairman David Olsson Welcome to this edition of our regular Superstar magazine. As I write Easter is again fast approaching. I wish everyone well for this solemn season. I am pleased to report that our Club is tracking along quite well considering the tightening economic environment, a regular occurrence around election time. At this stage, we are trading near to budget and our subsidiary businesses are also reasonably on target. Our debt levels are better than projected, however we are now planning some more internal Club works which will slightly increase our debt for the short term. For all that we remain financially sound, more than meeting our debt targets. More below on the planned works. Members would be aware that the extensions to our hotel, which included the addition of 38 rooms, the refurbishment of all of the original rooms, the renovation of the hotel conference facilities and the addition of function space, were completed last November. I have said before demand for rooms at Rydges had reached a level whereby the numbers for expansion stacked up nicely. I am very pleased with the new look and I’m sure members will also be happy with the finished product. Room and function bookings are already exceeding projections. As indicated above we have been working with architects on the design for internal works at the mother Club with those areas not recently renovated under review. The major areas to be refurbished are the indoor gaming area and Café Samba which will have a significantly different and improved look. We are intending some work on the foyer and staff amenities as well. Overall this will further enhance the entrance to the Club, giving it a great new look. One of the major issues we are wrestling with is the timing of the work due to the disruption it will cause to Club operations. Once we are satisfied we have optimised the staging of the works we will push forward to complete the refurbishment as quickly as is possible. I’ll keep you informed about this as our plans progress. Meanwhile at the Golf Club the course is holding up remarkably well in spite of extreme summer temperatures and a lack of recent rain. A full dam has enabled our grounds staff to keep the greens
and tees alive and the course is looking great. They’ve done some terrific work in recent times despite some serious challenges and continue to make enhancements as time permits. More rain in the coming months would certainly be welcome though. Several tees have recently been refurbished and more are planned to be improved soon. Our popular golf professional, Scott Martin is doing a great job and is working tirelessly to provide the kind of services members want. Keep up the good work Scott. In the club itself visits from members and guests are on the rise and the dining experience continues to go from strength to strength. Feedback has been consistently positive and the chefs are working wonders. Members may be aware that the Club last year purchased the Emily Cottage and Kendall Mill sites, both near to our Club. The Kendall Mill site is probably more commonly now known as the old Fishers Ghost restaurant site. As I have said previously these were strategic purchases and plans for their future are still in the very early stages. However, you may have seen in the local press efforts to clean up the Kendall Mill site which was a mess. Now that it has somewhat been restored to a reasonable state we will further assess it and secure the site pending an architect review. On a lighter note the new school year is well under way now and I wish all associated with our schools all the best for the year. This of course includes parents and the students themselves as well as teachers and administrators. As always our club will again strive to give our schools all the support we can. Once again thank you to members for your ongoing support and I trust you continue to enjoy the benefits provided by your Club. I’d like to wish all members all the best for the rest of the year and I sincerely hope we continue to prosper in the face of lingering challenges for the industry. From The General Manager Michael Lavorato As we experience the final days of what has been a long and hot summer, our thoughts turn to the football season, cooler days and warm cosy meals with family and friends. I am sure that in this issue you will discover many dining promotions, entertainment offers and special event celebrations that you can enjoy. Members who have attended the Club recently will have noticed signs depicting the Club’s new logo. This new logo, which is part of our new visual and branding identity was unveiled at an event last December to celebrate the Clubs’ 50-year anniversary. The new identity pays homage to the past – and looks towards an exciting future. As part of the process in establishing this new identity we took a deep dive to truly understand the essence of our brand. What it truly means to be Campbelltown Catholic Club. The end result is something we are very proud of and trust our members will embrace. I invite you to read more about our new brand on Page 6 of this issue. The Rydges Hotel upgrade and refurbishment was completed in November last year and the result there is stunning. If you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy a meal or drink at the Hotel’s Bar and Restaurant, Otis Bar & Grill, then I would highly
recommend a visit soon. I am pleased to say that the business and leisure community has responded very favourably to the refreshment and demand for accommodation, conference and events continues to remain strong. It won’t be long now before work commences on refurbishment of the main Club. As previously advised, there will be significant remodelling of the foyer, a new restaurant to replace Café Samba, work on the indoor gaming floor and the upstairs prefunction zone will also be refreshed. Builders are expected to commence in early June and construction will take approximately 12 months. These works are likely to be quite disruptive and members understanding will be appreciated as these occur. I am certain that the end product will be worth the inconvenience, but I thank you for your patience in advance. I hope to see you around the Club soon, there is always something exciting happening at your Club. Come and see why we say Campbelltown Catholic Club is ‘a caring community of fun’.
The A-League is coming to Macarthur South West Australia’s premier soccer league will expand to 12 teams in the next two seasons after licences were awarded to Western Melbourne and Macarthur South West Sydney. On 28 February The CUBE hosted the first community forum for the new Macarthur South West Sydney team giving fans the opportunity to help shape everything from team colours, name and vision for the Club. It’s an exciting time for our local community and we were delighted to provide the venue for the first of many community forums. The event MC’d by FoxSports commentator Daniel Garb gave community members the opportunity to direct questions to an expert panel including Brett Emerton, Lang Walker, Gino Marra and Sam Krslovic. More details on the forum as well as a link to the online survey can be found on page 31.

CLUB REPORTS From The Welfare Director Alan Scott The Club has finished a very busy period with the 50 Years celebrations and 50 Years Book Launch, all of which were very well received by our Members. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Therese and Jim Dengate on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary back on 4 October 2018, what a fantastic achievement! Therese and Jim celebrated their big event at the Campbelltown Golf Club with family and friends. Jim is a Life Member of our Club. On the subject of the Golf Club, I can personally recommend having a lovely leisurely lunch there overlooking the water and greens. Value for money is exceptional. Wedding bells were ringing for well known Foundation Member Kerry Hooton when he married Lorraine Brophy on 12 December 2018. Our warmest wishes go out to you both for a happy future together. Club Member Kenneth Cockcroft celebrated his 70th birthday on 7 January this year and we extend our best wishes to him. Other Members who have celebrated milestone birthdays since our last edition of Superstar include Bernie McGrath and Pat Comerford. Long time Member John Evans, was honoured by Sydney Cricket Association when he became the 12th Umpire to officiate 400 games of grade cricket. Well done John.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Gavin Driscoll who passed away in February. Gavin was one of our very early Members and as a lot of our older Members will recollect, he was quite a character. The story goes, our first Club Manager, Leo Callaghan, had strict dress regulations, especially with Tradie work wear. Gavin and a few of his mates came up with a plan for Gavin to wear a suit under his overalls. When the time came for him to leave the club he went into the Men’s toilets to change. Leo was at the door waiting to throw him out of the Club for unsuitable dress but out came Gavin in a suit. Leo wasn’t impressed, but Members present had a laugh because they knew of the plan. Our thoughts and prayers are also extended to the families of Members who have passed away recently. May they all Rest in Peace. CLEANUP OF THE MILL
Five giant skip bins filled with rubbish, eight sets of hands, and buckets of sweat. That was the official tally from Campbelltown Catholic Club’s clean-up in February of the historic Kendall’s Mill House ruin in Queen Street (also known as “old Fisher’s Ghost Restaurant”). That means heritage experts and club staff can now safely access the site – previously a vandalised, overgrown “meth house”. Tony Holmes, the club’s operations manager said the internal work took three people two days to clean, and the grounds took five people two days.
“The team did a great job in difficult circumstances.” The Catholic Club hasn’t got a firm plan for a future use of the site yet, but hopes to fully restore the heritage building. Kendall’s Mill is where the industrial revolution began in Macarthur – the first local mill powered by steam, not wind. Built in 1844, the mill dominated the southern end of Campbelltown as a symbol of hope and prosperity until rustdevastated wheat farms began to be replaced by dairy farms in the 1880s. The main building was demolished in the 1920s, but the attached Mill House – this building – was redeveloped by Dr William Mawson (namesake of Mawson Park) as Milby Maternity Hospital, before becoming a restaurant. It has been a ruin since a fire swept through in 2005.
But the love local people obviously have for the building was clear in the hundreds of emotional online comments, when the clean up was reported in the local press. But it was confronting for Club staff to walk through the ruin, even after the clean-up: graffiti, missing floors and ceilings, even a giant crucifix carved into the old floorboards. The bright note is that, within years, we hope to be able to stand in the same spots and photograph a beautifullyrestored building. Members just have to visit Quondong to be reminded how good their Club is at respecting and restoring our gems of the past. And doing things well. Hopefully peace can return to this old gem and wounds may now be healed.

KENDALL MILL
• NSW Office of Environment and Heritage lists Old Kendall Mill House as being of State significance as “a very rare early 19th century mill house, the only remaining fabric from the first steam powered mill in Campbelltown.” • The builder of the mill, Lawrence Kendall was the uncle of famous Australian poet, Henry Kendall. • In 1878, Kendall sold his Campbelltown Mill to James Bocking, a prominent landholder and retailer, and it became known as Bocking’s Mill. The ground floor facade of the Mill House facing Queen Street was modified in Bocking’s time (c. 1880s) – a single storey shopfront extension with an attached verandah. • NSW Office of Environment and Heritage notes: “The Old Kendall Mill House is a very rare mid 19th century mill house in NSW. It is one of only two colonial mill houses known to have survived in NSW.”

CAMPBELLTOWN CHALLENGE WALK Aquafit was once again well represented with 75 members and guests forming the Aquafit teams for the 6km & 11km walk at this years Campbelltown City Challenge Walk held on Sunday 10 March. The Australian Botanic Gardens in Mount Annan provide a stunning scenic backdrop for this annual event, encouraging the community to participate in a healthy lifestyle initiative. CAMPBELLTOWN CATHOLIC CLUB LAUNCHES NEW YOUTUBE SERIES “Foodie School” is a fun and educational YouTube series hosted by dad and award-winning chef, Peter Sheppard. The series aims to help kids and families in Australia enjoy the steps in food preparation and mould good eating habits by cooking with fresh, quality ingredients.
“Foodie School encourages kids to learn about fresh ingredients, flavours and cooking techniques, while being creative and bonding with the family. As both a dad and chef myself, I see it as an education which is vital at an early age, particularly as this is the time when kids are the most curious and open to learning,” said Sheppard. 16

Foodie School features six, bite-sized 3-minute episodes, highlighting one family friendly recipe in each. Filmed to be light, wholesome and highly engaging, Sheppard, along with two student assistants, prepare meals based on simple yet delicious recipes across breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. You can also sample the menus items from each episode at Kings Food Court. A new episode will be released every fortnight. Once an episode goes to air the menu item will be featured in Kings Food Court for a limited time. WHAT ABOUT TOMORROW? CELEBRATE SAFE The celebration season has drawn to a close and Youth Solutions and Campbelltown Catholic Club are looking back on another successful annual Safer Celebrations campaign.
“The What about tomorrow? Celebrate Safe”, campaign ran between November 2018 – February 2019. The campaign sought to provide support and resources for young people in our community about how to minimise their risk of experiencing alcohol-related harm. The campaign specifically targeted young people aged 18 – 25 years, with a purpose of also reaching the broader community and those who support and care for young people. Through the implementation of several multimedia and health promotion strategies, the campaign sought to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions to keep themselves and their friends safe while out celebrating. Importantly, the What about tomorrow? Celebrate Safe. campaign also raised awareness about basic emergency first aid and how to manage a crisis situation should one arise during a night out or while celebrating. Throughout the campaign period, Youth Solutions staff and volunteers hosted interactive stalls in the community and in the Club to share the campaign message and promotional products. Nearly 2500 safer celebrations guides and resources were distributed to young people and the community during the campaign period. Campaign co-lead, and Youth Solutions Community Relations and Communications Coordinator, Brooke Manzione said the campaign resources were well received in the community: “The resources that the team and volunteers distributed were timely and relevant. The Safer Celebrations Guide included tips about how to respond in emergency situations and sought to raise awareness about respecting others’ limits. The resources were successful in sharing the message that it is perfectly acceptable to not drink if you don’t want to, to plan ahead, and to be confident enough to drink at one’s own pace”. 18

January. Youth Solutions have also collected anonymous information about young people’s partying practices, to inform program work and to ensure future campaigns are relevant and appropriate.
Youth Solutions CEO, Geraldine Dean said she was pleased with the reach of the campaign and grateful for the support of Campbelltown Catholic Club:
Youth Solutions will keep the campaign messages alive year-round, distributing the campaign Safer Celebrations Guides and promotional items to the thousands of young people it works with each year.
“Each year we are able to connect with thousands of young people through the annual Safer Celebrations campaign. This year we are celebrating 10 years of Safer Celebrations with Campbelltown Catholic Club. On behalf of the Youth Solutions team I would like to extend my thanks to the Campbelltown Catholic Club for partnering with us again this year and to our media partners C91.3FM and the Campbelltown-Macarthur, CamdenNarellan and Wollondilly Advertisers, for circulating the campaign messages in our local community”. In line with the campaign, Campbelltown Catholic Club provided free soft drink to all designated drivers on Friday and Saturday nights in December and

2019 JAMM & SLAMM The 2019 Macarthur Disability Services (MDS) Jamm & Slamm Wheelchair Basketball Challenge was held on Friday 1 March. Twelve corporate teams competed in the event including Campbelltown Catholic Club and Aquafit based teams raising over $10,000 for MDS. All money raised goes towards MDS programs that support people with a disability and/or mental illness in Macarthur.
Local radio station C91.3FM were triumphant once again edging out Aquafit (15 – 6) in a very competitive Grand Final. Other teams included: Campbelltown City Council, BNI Morningstar Maroon, Austbrokers City State/ QBE Insurance, BNI Morningstar Black, East Campbelltown Eagles Football Club, Marsdens Law Group, BCRG Networking Group, BNI Power and Ingleburn RSL Club.

MACARTHUR SOUTH WEST A-LEAGUE COMMUNITY FORUM One Team, One Vision, One Community A-League is coming to Macarthur South West Sydney. And we are excited. In October 2020, the new A-League team representing the communities of Sydney’s South West will run onto the pitch at Campbelltown Stadium. A combined bid called Macarthur South West United, beat a strong representation from Southern Sydney to win the right to be the next A-League club. Backed by local soccer identities, administrators, the Walker Corporation and Campbelltown City Council, the bid team were thrilled when they were announced as Sydney’s official third team. The new team will call Campbelltown Stadium its home and community forums are currently being conducted throughout the region asking people for their opinion on team name, colours and identity/nickname. “This is a community owned team. We want our local community to get behind the team and help us develop its identity,” Deputy Chairman Gino Marra says. “Our forums provide opportunities for the community to engage with club officials and find out how the Club intends to support not only football but also local community programs. We want input on what they want to see from the Club.
“The support so far has been outstanding with over 700 people attending our forums to date and over 2,000 people engaging with our on-line survey.” The Club is determined to build a club that is not only for today’s fans and supporters but becomes a club for tomorrow with a strong foundation of business acumen, football pathways, community connection and culture. The anticipated population growth of the region, the strength of its grassroots football and a young, family orientated community that is diverse and passionate about football were all winning factors for the A-League to choose South West Sydney. “This region has a strong, proud history in football. We come from a background of hard work, honest football and aspiration. All values we want to see come through in our club.” At the recent Campbelltown Forum, local and former Socceroo Brett Emerton, spoke about growing up in the area and how this club will help build pathways
for players to be more involved with the game. The Club is talking with local associations about how to nurture young players through youth programs and academies, that develop them into being better people both on and off the pitch. The new club name, identity, and colours will be announced in July along with the launch of foundation memberships. The Club is already engaging with local businesses and community groups to build support for the new club. Campbelltown Stadium will be developed in a game day hive of activity for each match, with affordable ticket packages for families and a kids’ friendly fan zone. “The unofficial anthem is “It’s Your Team, It’s My Team, It’s Our Team”. So we encourage everyone to get online and have a say. This will help us define a club for your future.” Marra said. THREE of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s most iconic sporting ‘subclubs’ will be celebrating their 50th birthday in 2019. The Social Golf Club, the Fishing Club, and the Collegians Rugby League Football Club were all established in 1969.
This was soon after ‘The Catho’ itself had opened its doors in 1968. So, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane… Social Golf Club: The first of our subclubs, it began informally around 1966-67, but was officially established in January 1969. Members played every second Saturday at Picton, the ‘home course’ for decades, although Campbelltown Golf Course today plays a major role. Some well-known pioneers included Ron Connor, Terry Brien, Kevin McCue, Allen Cowdroy, Jim Over, Bill Meehan, Keith Miller, Jim Dengate, Barry Wright, Roy Murray and Frank O’Loughlan. The club still has 40-50 members and Alan Smith is the longest-serving president (2003-now).
Fred Borg, who had a role in founding several of the sub-clubs, including the Fishing Club.

Fishing Club: This group of keen anglers was born from the efforts of club patron Fred Borg and foundation secretary Gary Yates. The first meeting was held in December 1969 and the first proper ‘outside’ trip was to Wollongong. Keith Anderson served as foundation president for 16 years (1969-1985). The club is still running strong – and is a close-knit social group as much it is a sporting group.

Collegians Rugby League Football Club: Formed for seniors in 1969 to prepare for the 1970 season of the Group 6 country competition. The first A Grade coach was Bob McDonough, with first team manager being George Maloney and first team captain Gerry McGarry. A juniors club had also been formed by 1972. The club was dominated in its early days by well-known identities such as John O’Reilly, Gerry McGowan, Daryl Martyn, Gordon Fetterplace, Max Comerford, Ted McAnespie, Geoff Bourke, Geoff Lamont, Marty Hyland, Elwyn Spencer, and Keith Scott. The Collegians never won a Premiership but did make the grand final in 1973 and the semi-finals in 1977, 1978 and 1982. The “Collies” eventually played under the Wests district competition (post 1987), but it has only been a juniors club since 2009.

JUST FOR THE TRIVIA BUFFS… • There are 23 sub-clubs associated with the Club today, but there have been a total of 51 sub-clubs over the years. • S ome of these extinct clubs were as unusual as a pigeon racing club, a squash club, a horse-riding club, and a carpet bowls club. • O ther long-surviving sub-clubs include Collegians Cricket (since 1970), St John’s Netball Club (since 1972), Collegians Soccer/Football Club (since 1973), Collegians Chess Club (since 1974), the Snooker Club (since 1974) and Collegians Hockey (since 1975). • T he three most recent additions to the sub-club family are Mountain Devils Bushwalking & Social Slub (since 2005), the C4 Choir (since 2010) and Camden Cats Senior Australian rules Football Club (since 2015). He is excited about some big changes coming to Samba – watch this space – but the Food Court has drawn much of his focus in past months. “This is by far the most popular place in the Club, our biggest market, so the food needs to be speak to people,” Tim said. To keep the welcoming bistro atmosphere everyone knows, but also make it more than “just” a Food Court. “It’s a real balancing act,” Tim admits.

“We’ve also been building up the talent and skill level of all the staff, and getting them to take pride in what they do – and they’re really embracing it and coming ahead leaps and bounds. “Things are no longer brought in from outside or pre-made, such as desserts or sandwiches, we’re making everything from scratch, in-house.” It’s also a very personal mission for Tim, because although he’s a master chef who has worked all over the world – from Uluru to London – he’s also a proud local boy. A former student of St Johns’ Primary School and St Gregory’s College, he grew up in Campbelltown and now lives in Camden, with wife Amanda (who is also a talented chef). And Tim hopes patrons will embrace the changes. “We’re just taking little steps, taking pride, and getting better and better each week. That’s our goal.”

WINNERS
Darcey Malone Macarthur has produced no shortage of Matildas – and Darcey Malone looks set to be another big name in women’s soccer. The 15-year-old from Mount Annan is the latest recipient of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s monthly Sports Hot Shot award. She wins $500 to help her family expenses as she blazes a trail through the women’s soccer ranks. Last year she was selected into the Young Matildas team to represent Australia in the Asian Football Confederation u16 Women’s Championships in Kyrgyzstan. She played 3 full games in their resounding victories over Palestine 11-0, Indonesia 11-0 and Chinese Taipei 7-0. She is now aiming to be a part of the Young Matildas in 2019 as they try to cement a spot in the u17 World Cup. “A big thank you to the Catholic Club for this support,” Darcey said. “My dream is to be not only playing for the Matildas in the next few years, but to be playing with my sister, Maddie. “She’s a really good player and is in Football NSW with me, in process of trialling for next round.” Both girls follow in some big footsteps. In 2007, the Matildas famously made it into the World Cup Quarter Finals with three of the team being Campbelltown stars – Jo Burgess, Sarah Walsh and Heather Garriock. Darcey, after honing her skills with the local Macarthur Rams, has had a big year playing for Football NSW. Her proud dad, Bernard, lists her achievements. “In 2017 she had her first taste of representative football when she was selected for NSW u14 team at the National Titles held in Coffs Harbour,” he said. “Last year she went a step further, being chosen for the NSW u17s at the NTC challenge held in Canberra. She was the youngest player for NSW, who ultimately won this event without losing a match. “This success was followed last September, by her being chosen for the Young Matildas team to represent Australia in Kyrgyzstan. “She has maintained a level head throughout all this excitement and is the same girl she was before any of this occurred.” Darcey attended St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Narellan and St Patrick’s College, before recently joining Westfields Sports High School. As well as her representative level games, she plays FUTSAL with the Campbelltown Quake.

Kurtis Becker Kurtis Becker is a special young man representing Australia at the Special Olympics in March. The 19-year-old from Ambarvale is the latest winner of Campbelltown Catholic Club’s monthly Sports Hot Shot award. He wins $500 to help his family’s expenses getting him overseas. Kurtis has been selected to represent Australia at Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for the 2019 Special Olympics World Games. “Thank you to the Catholic Club for the support and helping to get me over there,” said Kurtis, who works in sound engineering. Kurtis, who attended John Therry Catholic High School and Ambarvale Public School, has been involved in Little Athletics since tiny tots. He has also been embraced by Special Olympics Macarthur which offers sports for athletes with an intellectual disability. Proud mum, Karyn Becker, said Kurtis has achieved many goals from regional and state level to junior nationals, to his most previous national games in Adelaide in 2018 in which he competed in the 800 walk (1st place), Shotput (2nd place) and 100m run (2nd place). “He trains three times a week in fitness, drills, track and field events at Campbelltown Stadium with the support of his coach and mentor, Marc Ferguson,” Karyn said. “He will be participating in 100m sprint, shotput and 4x100 relay. “Kurtis is so looking forward to the experience and wearing the green and gold, making new global friends and a first time traveller overseas. “He will not only do his best, but a personal best.” “As the Special Olympics Oath says: Let me win ,If I cannot win, Let me brave in the attempt.” Coach Marc says Kurtis’s best event is long distant walk, but at the Games in Abu Dhabi his best chance to place us in shot put – but he has some strong international competition. CCC SOCIAL GOLF CLUB We are well under way into the competition year with the championship rounds not too far away. Before then we have the Max Berthon Shield and we will start our defense of the association shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club. Major trophies contested so far have been the 2BBB; leaders after the first round were Peter Rogers & Beau Dowton on 43 pts then Wayne Parkes & Gary Billingham on 42 pts. The winner of this year’s 2BBB was Peter Rogers & Beau Dowton after a second round 48 pts giving them a total of 91 pts followed by Bob Piefke & Peter Copus on 86 pts. The Presidents trophy was won by Bob Piefke, congratulations on winning this prestigious event. The Captains trophy was won by Mark Smith, congratulations on the win. The Max Berthon trophy was 38
won by Liam Murphy on a countback from Reece Pulbrook (Jnr) well done Liam. We managed to win the association shield against Lidcombe Catholic Club for the 5th year in a row 4-1, Matthew Greene a Campbelltown Catholic Club junior won both the club champion (Best scratch score on the day) and the Paul Ryan trophy (best 3 stableford scores) congratulations to Mathew on a good year of golf, showing that practice does pay off. The annual RSL challenge against Campbelltown RSL was a tightly fought contest with the Campbelltown Catholic club coming out on top and winning with

600 pts & beating Campbelltown RSL on 597. Alan Smith (President) noted that it would be good to see the trophy cabinet filling up again this year. Our Cock of the Walk (matchplay) is still underway with Bob Piefke to play Steven Kemp & Mark Smith to play Rob Green, winners to meet in the final, good luck to all golfers. We had 20 golfers attend our annual weekend away which this year was at Catalina at Batemans Bay. We had perfect weather, good golf and camaraderie for an enjoyable weekend. This year we will be going back to Catalina at Batemans Bay, members are encouraged to signal your intentions early as it is expected to book out this year.

CAMPBELLTOWN COLLEGIANS AUSSIE MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB Bryan Ferry sang the classic song ‘Lets Stick Together’. So what? So, that’s precisely what we do at Campbelltown Collegians Masters Swimming Club – we stick together! We encourage each other, we help each other, we volunteer for each other, we step forward when things need to be done. Our recent 2019 carnival was the perfect example of our wonderful club spirit. And it’s not just the club members who show this spirit; it’s our spouses, partners, children, family, friends, even prospective members (now full members); we all do it. Thank you for sticking together; this is the heart of our club.
No-one typified this spirit more than Hans Preiss who, out of swimming for six months with injury, still turned up every Sunday morning to time keep. “Its just part of what we do at this club” admitted Hans. “Even if we can’t swim, we still help out.” 2018 was a ‘different’ year for our club. After a record 18 consecutive years’ dominance as NSW endurance swimming champions, last year we were knocked off the top perch. We finished
2nd in NSW and 3rd nationally, so still a wonderful year. And coming second was the best thing that could happen to our club! Why? Our club membership was ageing and we needed new (especially younger) members. So late 2018 saw a huge and refreshing time of new recruits: Sharon Carpenter, Laura Lawrence, Janette Towel and Fiona Woods, then in January 2019, Jenni Goodhew, Kyle O’Brien, Brian Sutton and Paige Tomkins all joined.

Suzie Haddad, who joined in 2017, was ecstatic about the newcomers. “This is the best thing that could happen to our club!” exclaimed Suzie. “Now we’ll have lots more going to carnival and swimming relays.” And Suzie was spot-on with her judgment as most have competed at the first two carnivals of the year.

Lesley and Mark Thompson are the social sparks, heading up the year with their annual Australia Day BBQ celebration. Our carnival was next, a social event we share with the state – and one very special duck! A Saturday walk to/around Manly followed, then Heather and Terry Rouen hosted our presentation BBQ. We always celebrate members’ Big 0 birthdays, so scattered through the year Greg Jacques, Elly Ramon, Linda Beveridge, and Sue Heins all (hopefully) enjoyed reaching another decade. Live shows are big on our list of social activities: The Music of the Carpenters, Donna Lee Sings Petula Clarke, Grace Knight, The Piano Man, All Hail Chuck Berry, Elvis an American Trilogy, The Book of Mormon, and The Wharf Review, along with respective lunches or dinners, were all thoroughly enjoyed.

Campbelltown’s Sunday morning swims are the backbone of our club – and always attract most members for relaxed (but still energetic) competition. We are unique in masters swimming clubs around Australia as no other club competes like this. No wonder our club spirit is so high.
Every three months the club’s ladies, friends, wives, etc. had lunch together. Another walk, this time around Rose Bay, Woolloomooloo and the Royal Botanic Garden, was well attended, as were the end of-year events – Christmas breakfast one Sunday morning after swimming and the final BBQ of the year hosted by Annie and Doug Cooke. Whew! What a list.
The Sunday swims - and attendance at carnivals – all contribute to the Club Champion award, plus other trophies like Most Improved, Encouragement Award, etc. Unfortunately, the secrecy surrounding the winners over the past three months is so tight even Mr President isn’t told. The announcement must wait, as always, for our club presentation BBQ. If our Sunday swims are our club’s backbone and club spirit our heart – then the sense of humour gene/ gland/organ would have to be our social events! Someone mentioned the word ‘multitude’ but that would be an understatement for the number of social outings. Even our Sunday morning 40

The future looks very promising for Campbelltown Masters Swimming. We are leading the way in forming a new endurance swimming category, which has more than a little interest shown by other clubs – and NSW and Australian Masters Swimming organisations! There’s also a list of suggestions/ strategies/objectives that we have to improve our club and attract new members. CCC FISHING CLUB The CCC Fishing Club has been a little quiet more recently with weather conditions not very favourable. October 2018 saw approximately 30 members head to Ulladulla for our annual 8 day trip with most meeting at Appin at 7am for the 3 hour trip. After a quick stop of at Bewong to wait on any stragglers we again carried on in our convoy to arrive at the Headlands Caravan Park (Ulladulla) early morning. After booking in we set about to erect the club marquee a relatively easy task with plenty of helping hands on board and everyone settled into their accommodation just before the arrival of a storm. The club members, families and friends fished 5 out of the 7 days due to unfavourable weather conditions on the other 2. Overall it was a successful fishing week with almost 300 fish being caught by the 13 boats, lots of pan sized snapper, flathead and several pig fish making up most of the weeks catch. All in all, a great week for all.

Further weekend trips have been arranged at Greenwell point recently but with the weather not being that friendly fishing has been difficult with flathead being the most targeted species, not a problem really as everyone loves a good feed of fresh flathead.
The CCC Fishing Club is a social club welcoming Families as well as singles who may wish to spend quality time on the water with like minded people. We try to organise a few weekend fishing trips throughout the year, our annual fishing trip towards October/November each year and we have a Christmas in July Dinner Presentation Night which is a lot of fun and enjoyed by members. Our Meetings are held at the Catholic Club on the 2nd Wednesday of the month commencing at 7.30pm.
Several weekend trips to Greenwell Point were organised before Christmas, again with Snapper and Flathead making up most of the catch. A Port Kembla Trip took place in mid January with boats meeting at the ramp to find perfect weather conditions, boats were quickly launched with the first task to catch live bait (Slimy Mackerel) which were in good numbers around the Campbelltown Catholic Club cathclub.com.au

COLLEGIANS HOCKEY CLUB Campbelltown Collegians Hockey Club, also known as Collies, is a family orientated and friendly club. As a club, we are always looking to recruit new players of any skill level from U7’s to open seniors teams. Hockey is a fun sport that allows you to keep fit and make new friends, with the added bonus of not having to travel each week to games and training. Each Thursday night from 6pm training is held, with games played from Friday night to Sunday at Narellan Hockey Complex.

Reflecting on the 2018 season, we had many of our teams be successful in reaching the finals, including U11’s, U13’s, U18’s, Ladies B grade and Mens 2nd grade. The Under 13’s in particular showed their determination to win in a nail biting grand final, resulting in a welldeserved win for the team. Thanks to the support of the Catholic Club, Collies had the ability to reward the team with jackets to celebrate being premiers. In addition to having many teams play in the grand finals, Collies were lucky enough to have four of their umpires represent the club by having the privilege to umpire finals games. Well done to Daniel Noble, Travis Carstens, Lisa Clinch and Ashley Clinch for representing our club. We would like to take the opportunity to thank our major sponsors, Campbelltown Catholic Club. MOUNTAIN DEVILS BUSHWALKING AND SOCIAL CLUB Six months of Mountain devils walking and hiking has seen them tramp up hill and down dale and in the process been lucky enough to enjoy the Australian bush and some quirky places in between. Early in September Phil led 10 keen walkers and climbers, they soon found out, to the Warrumbungles for a 5 day glamp. The experience was amazing and they all stretched themselves beyond what they thought was their capacity. Each days adventures were told and retold when gathered for “Happy Hour” A great trip. The picture is of the Breadknife and the group actually climbed higher than this.
for a beach walk and led quite a hot one around the Bay Walk - Iron Cove. He finished the walks with the Empire Pass Lawson. A very pretty walk but another one to stretch the walkers capabilities. As Summer got to its high point the walks were pared back a little and a few more social events took place such as the Xmas Party at Flower Drum Palace organised by President Rosslyn. Another was the afternoon tea down The Old Ford Road. The Symphony in the Park was fabulous and enjoyed by all who went.
Kevin was back leading walks to Lime Kiln Bay where wildflowers were everywhere. His walk to Barren Grounds had to be cancelled because of heat. Lorraine led a walk from Gordon to Roseville through remnant bushland along the Lane Cove River where water dragons and birdlife were seen and heard by all. Michael as usual had his challenging walks such as the one to Taffy’s Rock in Ku-ring-gai Chase. When Michael says undulating in the walk description he means it. He also led the Twilight Walk through Dharawal NP to Minerva Pools and the torch was essential. His last walk for this time was to Hilltop and Cave Creek Tunnel, another new walk.
Kerri has been very busy over the time taking members to all different and varied walks and social activities such as visits to art galleries, wildflower gardens, markets, Sculptures By the Sea and as far afield as Dangar Island, even examining the dead heart of Rookwood. Great walks for the hotter summer months. Thank you Kerri. Andy not to be outdone by his brother has led many walks including the lovely Lockleys Pylon with magnificent views over the Grose Valley. He led a walk to Little Marley in RNP, Bradleys Head walking from Balmoral to Taronga Zoo with views of the harbour at every turn. He led the walkers to Seven Mile Beach
undulating but picturesque. The social gathering at the end revived us all. Another walk was from Rose Bay to Watsons Bay, great coastal views all the way and gate crashing a 40th Birthday Party, by mistake, at the conclusion of the walk only added to everyone’s enjoyment.
Lots of new walks were tried this period and that’s thanks to our walk leaders, without whom our club would not function. Only a couple of walks had to be cancelled because of heat or wet. Phil added more walks notably the Kiama to Gerringong Coastal Track very
So once again the Mountain Devils have enjoyed their walks over the last six months regardless of undulations and technical difficulties (steps) and have all felt fabulous when the goals were achieved. ST JOHNS NETBALL CLUB The 2019 Netball Season is quickly approaching. The first matches for this season will actually be played this month (March!) so organisation and preparations are escalating to an all-time high. Our 2019 Committee have had some changes in leadership but all new members have been welcomed and thanked for their commitment and support in their voluntary roles. We are registering 8 teams this year, with many new faces coming along to our uniform night to ensure they are well-equipped for the new season. Our teams range from a ladies team playing in the Division competition all the way to the youngest of competitors in the Net Set Go competition. We are pleased to have a couple of new coaches joining our ranks this season and many experienced coaches
returning. All of our coaches have completed their National Foundation course or have attended the CDNA coaching clinic. We even host our own St. John’s coaching clinic to develop more skills in this area. Our girls would not be able to participate without our dedicated coaches so we thank them for their time and commitment to ensuring young girls can participate and keep fit in team sports. MACARTHUR SAINTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB Macarthur Saints Junior Rugby League Football Club finished last year on a high with our under 10’s team taking out the first division premiership in a thrilling game at Campbelltown Stadium. We held another successful presentation day in November, the formal ceremony and award announcements took place at Campbelltown Catholic Club in The Cube, followed by a family BBQ held at Bradbury pools. We are now eagerly anticipating the start of season 2019 in April. Training has begun, and our teams are preparing for three upcoming trial games which will see them test their fitness and skills against other local clubs. Our club currently fields teams in a variety of age groups, from the little under 6’s who are starting their football journey with learning about team work and practicing new skills up to the more experienced under 15’s group who play

in a combined competition with local teams and those from the Canterbury district. At Macarthur Saints JRLFC we proudly cater for a range of abilities and skill levels with teams in first, second and third divisions. We encourage our players to focus on performance improvement’s, fitness development and good sportsmanship, resulting in a positive experience when they take the field whether they actually win the game or not.
