34 WELFARE REPORT

The new outdoor area at Workers Sports is nearing completion and at the time of this report should only be a few weeks away until you get the chance to experience this area. This area is a family friendly area where family and friends can have some time out to relax and enjoy. Check out the new children’s play area which will be a special place for the kids.

George Vella, who came in next in the election voting was invited to join the Board. I feel confident that George will be an asset to the Board and work towards the goals we have envisaged for the Clubs future. Please make George feel welcome. I would like to welcome our new Operations Manager, Brad Woodhead. Brad is replacing Morgan Stewart who has moved on. Brad comes with plenty of Club experience and I feel sure he will do the position justice with his friendly manner and expertise.

At the AGM all the resolutions were favourably passed. The 2 year elections were finally approved and I thank the members for this. It will be voting again in 2017 and then every 2 years after that. We will still have our AGM every year where the reports will be presented and you have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments and if there are any changes to the constitution they will need to be approved by the members. On a sadder note Mark Cowgill has given up Mark’s Haircare and resigned from the Board for early retirement further up the Coast. Mark has had over 40 years at the Club and will be missed. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff I wish him and Debbie a happy retirement.

I wish to start this report by thanking all the members who took the time to vote in our recent elections for the 2016 Board of Directors. I was overwhelmed with the results and so pleased to see the whole Board re-elected. This showed that the members had confidence in our ability and vision for the Clubs future.

Congratulations to Jan Layton who had Life Membership of Workers Women’s Outdoor Bowls bestowed on her by the members for her dedication, service and hard work for over 10 years. These nominations do not come easily. Well done Jan.

The Workers Women’s Outdoor Bowls is second to none so if any members are interested in social or competition bowls give one of the committee members a call. It is a great way to meet new friends and I know you will be made very welcome. Thank you to all the ladies who made me feel so welcome at the Friendship Day. Thanks Elaine for the invite, I had fun and really enjoyed the day.

We didn’t win the first two but Ms Jhan Leach, who the Club nominated for the work that she does with Blacktown Women’s and Girl’s Health Centre and domestic violence won the “Heart of the Community” award. An extremely well deserved award. I am privileged along with my Board colleagues to be invited to our Sporting Body presentations. In May I attended the Junior Cricket where the young cricketers were applauded and presented with their various trophies on their season results. Two teams won their Grand Final. Under 14 Division 2 were Minor Premiers and Premiers whilst Under 16 Division 1 Black were Premiers. The other teams showed good sportsmanship, teamwork and had fun during the season. It was a great honour for me to present the “Maureen Mackey Memorial Trophy” on behalf of the Mackey Family. I voiced to the young cricketers that Maureen was a Director and Treasurer of the Club and my very good friend. She loved and supported all our sporting bodies and was always interested in what they did. It wouldn’t matter how many accolades I gave it wouldn’t be sufficient to describe this lady. She would be looking down feeling so proud of this trophy. The trophy was for The Best Blacktown Workers Club Junior Cricket Player. It was awarded on point’s basis. 1 point per run and 10 points per wicket or catch. It was won by Daniel Dellow. Congratulations to Daniel. I also attended the Senior Baseball presentation. The men and ladies looked superb and had a good night. Lots of trophies were given out. I was very impressed to hear how many of our players were Country, State and National representatives. You can be very proud of your achievements. How proud are we of Jacob Hansford. Jacob is a local boy living in the Blacktown area and came to the Club through the Employ an Athlete program from the NSW Institute of Sport 18 months ago. Jacob works in the coffee shop as a barista and also behind the bar. He is living his dream by being selected for the Rio Olympics starring in the 4 x 200m Men’s Freestyle Relay team. With his training, studies and work I do not know how he does it. I know we are all behind Jacob wishing him every success. Go for gold Jacob. We have a busy year in front of us as we continue to work on the Over 55’s Resort and Aged Care Facility and our Sporting Precinct of Excellence. I will keep updating you with information as it comes to hand. Make your membership work for you by joining in the activities, entertainment, promotions and many sporting facilities and groups that are available for you to access. Enjoy your time at your Club.

I attended the Clubs & Community Awards in May with fellow Directors and Staff. We were finalists in 3 categories:  Support of Amateur Sport  Environment  Heart of the Community

Keeping Smiling and be

It is part of our Club policy and our pleasure to be involved in many local community projects and charities so to be a finalist is a very rewarding achievement and all members can feel very proud. The event was hosted by Sandra Sully. What a beautiful, bubbly lady she is and she put so much fun into the presentations.

President

Kind to each other.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

TREASURER’S REPORT

Hello Members;

Hello Members,

I would like to congratulate the Board of Directors for their re-appointment at the recent Club election. Further congratulations are extended to Kay Kelly President, Terry O’Loughlin Senior Vice President, Les Winters Vice President and Jim Buckley Treasurer on maintaining their executive positions. I look forward to working with the Board over the coming 12 months as we proceed with our diversification model for the Club Groups’ future.

At the time of writing this report, work at the Workers Sports on the new outdoor family area is almost completed and builders are hoping for the end of July for it to be ready to open.

The Sports Club outdoor area is nearing completion and we look forward to showcasing the marvelous new facilities. With new catering options, state of the art outdoor mega screen and a brand new playground guaranteed to excite kids of all ages the Sports Club will be the place to be. The long awaited GRAND OPENING will be a hive of excitement so keep an eye out for more information.

Please see the Financial Data supplied below at the time of writing this report.

We have some of the best dining options available across our three venues. From dining with altitude, Cucina Locale to all you can eat buffets. The Workers Group has something to tantalize every taste bud. The Impressions Café at Workers Blacktown has $10-week day special which have proven popular with our members. I am proud to advise we have helped many other causes with donations exceeding $250,000 over the last year. Some of the worthy recipients include; Special Olympics Australia, Beyond Blue, Blacktown City Lantern Club, Rotary Club of Blacktown, Lalor Park Preschool, Riding for the Disabled to mention a few. In addition, we pledged $50,000 to Grace’s Place to establish a place of refuge for children devastated by homicide in memory of Anita Cobby and her parents.

The Men’s Bowling Club, with help from the Women’s Bowling Club, held the NSW Combined State High Schools Bowling Triples Championship over two days in June. A pat on the back to the bowlers (male and female) for a great achievement on holding this event. Best wishes to all the members and families for the rest of 2016.

The Australian 2016 Rio Olympic Swimming Team has been selected, and one local athlete and Workers employee has got his name on the team sheet! Jacob Hansford at the young age of 20yrs is living his dream, competing in his Olympic Debut at the Rio Olympics starring in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay Men. Oktoberfest 2016

will be bigger and better!

Save the dates - Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October. Last year we held our first Oktoberfest at Workers Hubertus Country Club over the October long weekend with 3 days of non-stop celebrations. Inspired by our love of the traditional Bavarian festival and great beer, Workers Hubertus Oktoberfest featured make shift beer halls, authentic German food stalls, entertaining performers, fun filled rides, face painting and live music. Something for everyone! The Workers Group are immensely proud to be able to hold this illustrious event again in 2016! Keeping with traditional authentic German cuisine, there will be an array to taste, including freshly cooked pork knuckle, sauerkraut, bratwurst and so much more.

We are kick starting the festivities with one of Sydney’s favourite covers band, The Bandits on Friday 30 September. The Bandits bring to life all the fun and excitement of the best loved hits of the last five decades the perfect way to launch a long weekend jam packed full of festivities. On Saturday we officially start our German celebrations from 10am. Experience the best of the German Folk Dancing Group with the traditional and some cheeky adaptions. The Tirolean Band will keep the festivities going with their music till late evening. The kids will love the range of rides and activities guaranteed to keep them entertained for hours. Stalls have always been a big part of Oktoberfest and being the community club we are, we gladly invite locals and their businesses to showcase their craft. To make an enquiry about having a stall at Oktoberfest 2016, please contact Brett Lane on (02) 4773 4444.

12

So raise your steins, for the love of beer and all things German, it’s time to dust those dirndls off and join in the Oktoberfest festivities. You know you’ll have a foot-tapping, thigh-slapping good time!

THE MEN’S OUTDOOR BOWLING CLUB This year we put in five pennant teams with one of our teams playing in the Metro one this is a new format for 2016, the competition at this level is very strong. Our no 3 team are doing well and still in with a chance but the other three teams are struggling, but they are all doing their best and we have to thank all the players for participating. On Anzac Day we put on a special mixed game of bowls, 48 players turned up for a fun day. In June our club is having a combined high school tournament; some of the players come from all parts of the State to play in this game. We also have bare foot bowls at our club any organisation or party can book the greens for a night or day to play barefoot bowls.

A new award was added to this year’s presentation – The Maureen Mackey Memorial Award. To present this award Kay Kelly gave an emotional insight into the person behind the name, the late Maureen Mackey.
