James Maloney

GOES WEST After moving from Orange to the Central Coast as a nine-year-old, James Maloney is no stranger to the drastic lifestyle changes that he and his family have faced throughout his rugby league career. It’s been a journey that has taken him and his family interstate, across the Tasman and back to Sydney, culminating in his arrival at the heart of the city’s west. Whilst some may struggle with the pressures of juggling the career of a professional athlete and being a parent, Maloney credits the constant change for bringing him and his wife Jess closer together. “We got together just before I went down to Melbourne and she fell pregnant with (eldest) Kade down there. The opportunity at the Warriors came up and she was happy to go and support me in that.” “It was a big move having our first kid and going to another country away from family and friends… but it was good in that it made us stronger. We didn’t have help and we had to do everything on our own. We leant on each other.” Maloney admits the constant change has more of an effect on his wife than it does on him. “The beauty with footy is you come in and meet 30-odd blokes you become really good friends. It’s a little harder for Jess. She has to move away from friends and make new friends, which takes a little bit more time.” After spending much of his life on the beachside, Maloney is excited to embrace the change of scenery that presents itself in Penrith. “I don’t mind that it’s a little quieter and away from the hustle and bustle. It’s something that we’re looking forward to. I might get down to Cables Wake Park and have a crack at that because I used to do a bit of surfing.” And whilst a third Premiership ring remains his main goal after the move to Penrith, his winning pedigree is already making an impact on a different green playing surface to the one he’ll run out on at Panthers Stadium.“I enjoy my golf. I went out for a hit with the boys…there’s quite a few handy golfers [but] me and (Tyrone) Peachey got the cash on the weekend.”
