Dean Whare Talks Fatherhood Family the centre of attention for Whare. It’s not every day that a serious injury could be seen as a blessing. Especially for a professional athlete. However, for Panthers centre Dean Whare, a horror run of injuries afforded him the opportunity to be around his young family and take an even more active role in their upbringing. 2016 was a season to forget for Whare who was braced to make his return from a calf injury only to rupture his ACL in the lead-up to his comeback game and undergo seasonending surgery. Rather than be negative, he would use his lay-off to spend more time with daughters Mila (5) and Zahlia (3). “You only get a couple of months off a year so it (the injury) was sort of a blessing in disguise getting all that time off. I got to spend a lot more time with my family than I normally do,” said Whare. The road to recovery from a potentially career-threatening injury is long and lonesome. The process requires toiling away in a gym and going through a gruelling process of rebuilding strength and confidence to return to the paddock. The mental recovery can often be just as difficult. “When I first got told I was out for the year…I was sad for a week but being with my family and everything they did distracted me.” “In my early days of rehab, running and going to the gym, the kids were right there with me at training. Now fully fit and back in to the weekly routine of a rugby league player, time spent around his daughters and partner Natasha isn’t something Whare is taking for granted. He is determined to be a positive influence and role model.

From left, Mila, Dean, Natasha & Zahlia “Every day off I have we’re trying to do as many things as we can together as a family and [I’m] trying to teach them as much as I can.” The determination to be there for his family was none more evident than when he rushed home just days before the final of the Four Nations tournament to be by Natasha’s side for the birth of their second daughter. Whare left the Kiwis training camp and flew back to Sydney before returning in time to take his place in the team as they defeated the Kangaroos to lift the trophy in their home country. “Natasha was booked in for a C-section so we knew the time it was going to happen. I wanted to be there as support for her.” “I knew she had our families here (for support) but it would have been different if I wasn’t there for her.”

on to the field and the first people he looks for as soon as the final siren sounds. “My little ones complain if they don’t come to the game. They’re at every game…and love coming to training when they can.” Despite his injury troubles, Whare’s attitude and determination in his recovery meant the Panthers were keen to secure his services for the long-term and agreed a five-year deal earlier this year. After arriving from Manly Sea Eagles in 2013, it’ll bring his stay in Penrith to almost a decade. With his family settled in at the foot of the Mountains, Whare is pleased he can provide stability for his family. “My eldest (Mila) is going to primary school next year. She has got a lot of friends at preschool so having that stability and support for her was a big part of the decision to stay so long.”

“It’s an experience I never wanted to miss. In my mind I was always going to be there and if I had to miss the final I would’ve missed the final.” Now old enough to recognise that their dad plays football for a living, his daughters are there cheering him on whenever he steps
