Guiding Journey From the Farm to the Footy Field
The ‘Footy Gods’ often have much to answer for to the average punter who witnesses their team cruelled by bad decisions, injury to key players or the bounce of the ball not going their way. But for two happy-go-lucky country boys from the north island of New Zealand, those same footballing deities are playing a part in their meteoric rise in to the limelight of the National Rugby League.

Fisher-Harris recalled the mixture of emotions as he discovered the moment he worked for was finally about to happen. “The club rang mum and told her. His debut was extra special given it fell on his mother’s birthday. With her name etched on his wrist as a source of inspiration, he gave her the perfect present by scoring in a 40-0 win over Newcastle.

“It was another moment where you think it’s fate. There were a few tears afterwards. It was a really special occasion.”
That moment would instead arrive months later. Again against the Warriors. This time in Auckland. Surrounded by their loved ones. And rather than running around on the paddocks of their country towns, they were on the hallowed turf of Mt Smart Stadium.
“She’s everything to me. Everyone’s got that one person that’s done more for you than anyone else. I remember on my 8th birthday my wish was for her to quit smoking. So she did and hasn’t smoked since. I want to start looking after her now that I’ve got a bit more money in my pocket.” The Footy Gods weren’t done there. They both made
“That was like another Footy Gods kind of thing,” said Harawira-Naera. “It was special because we both got to see our families. We needed a lot of tickets.”
To cap off a memorable year, in October, Fisher-Harris and his partner Natalie welcomed their first child, a daughter named Tahira. His approach to fatherhood is much like his approach to his football. “I’m nervous to be honest. But I’ll take it as it comes.” Now both fully-fledged members of the Panthers squad and having had a taste of the Finals, the next step for the pair from Ngāpuhi is to hoist the NRL trophy aloft. And you wouldn’t bet against it. The Footy Gods will be watching over them.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard performed outstandingly in the green and gold and stamped himself as a long-term representative player of the future. It was also a welcome return to the Australian team for Josh Mansour.
Dean Whare and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak have come through their NZ Kiwis campaign unscathed and are looking forward to the new season.
Young Jarome Luai performed admirably for Samoa against top quality opposition. That experience will further aid his development at this stage of his career and he has already returned to training with the top quad.

The big news coming out of the 2017 RLWC was the performances of Viliame Kikau, who starred for Fiji in their run to the semi-finals. ‘Billy’ is now injury-free and we all saw how well he performed at the back end of the season in our premiership-winning ISP side. He carried that through to the World Cup and earned the accolade of selection in the RLWC Team of the Tournament. Without doubt the biggest news for Panthers this year has been the signing of James Maloney. Jim has been a success for several clubs in the NRL and at the highest
levels of representative football sides. He brings a wealth of playing experience, but more importantly a wealth of successful experience. We welcome Jim and his family to the club. Over the past couple of months we have announced several contract extensions for some of our younger players. Our fullback Dylan Edwards thoroughly deserved an upgrade and extension to his existing deal. Tyrone May has established himself as an NRL player of the future and has also extended his contract until 2020. We are also very pleased to announce that the reliable
Isaah Yeo has agreed to extend his contract until season 2021. Still only 23 years old, Isaah has already played over 80 NRL games and we view him as a long-term leader at our club. At the moment the coaches and players are well into their pre-season preparations and looking forward to a successful season ahead. We again thank the Board and Management of Panthers Group for their generous and unwavering support of the Panthers Rugby League program and the Penrith District Junior Rugby League.

Cooking Secrets
Crisp Fried Barramundi
with Three Flavour Sauce Spice up your barramundi recipe with this easy-to-make dish. With the use of chillies, this meal is jam packed with flavour.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
• 1 each Whole Baby Barramundi (Cleaned) • 100g Rice Flour • 20L Crisco Sunola Oil • 100g Bok Choy • 100g Garlic • 8 each Long Red Chillies • 50g Coriander Roots • 25g Salt • 25mL Cooking Oil • 150mL Tamarind Water • 40g Caster Sugar • 75mL Fish Sauce • 500mL Water

Finely chop the chillies and dice the garlic and coriander. Place the herbs into the Robot Coupe with a pinch of salt and blend them until a paste forms. Scrap the mixture into a pot; add a teaspoon of cooking oil and place on medium heat for 10 minutes. 2. In a separate saucepan, combine the fish sauce, tamarind and sugar, then scrape in the chilli paste. Stir the ingredients together and then place it back on a low heat for 10 minutes or until it begins to simmer. 3. To prepare the fish, cut off the fins and tail. Then, score the fish to create a surface area. Coat with rice flavour and drop the fish into the deep fryer with Crisco Sunola Oil at 180 degrees for six minutes. 4. While the fish cooks, boil water on the stovetop to lightly cook the bok choy. Place the vegetable in the water for a couple of minutes, until it begins to soften a little bit. 5. To plate, create a bed using the bok choy, then place the fish on top. Pour the chilli sauce paste over the top of the fish and finish it off by adding coriander leaves and a wedge of lime.
