We come face to face with Panthers superstar winger and Bowel Cancer Australia advocate, Josh Mansour, discussing how he has overcome the odds after a recent career threatening injury.
J
osh ‘Sauce’ Mansour, an inspirational advocate both on and off the field. The young Canterbury born boy has shown strict determination and heart in his Rugby League career, especially over the last few years. Representing both Australia and Lebanon at an International level plus New South Wales at Origin, ‘Sauce’ is a natural role model for our young rising stars. After experiencing what could have been career ending facial injury, we go close and personal with Josh as he tells us how he has tackled both the highs and lows of what life has passed at him. It has been a crazy year for you Josh and we are glad to see you back in action. How are you feeling both physically and mentally? I am feeling great now. Undergoing two surgeries in the space of two months has been really tough. But to be back with the team and into the rhythm of things, it’s an 4 • #PANTHERPRIDE
amazing feeling. Going into the surgeries, I didn’t know what to expect, I was going into the unknown. Thankfully, the surgeries couldn’t have been any better and now I’m feeling great both physically and mentally. My physio is going great, I’m feeling healthy and in the right mind frame. During the time off recovering, it was great to spend time with my family and I have also taken up a course in Construction which I have been enjoying and it has kept me occupied. But all things aside, I’m really looking forward to be playing again this year.

Especially the fact that there was a risk of losing my vision in my left eye. In the end, we stayed strong and it all went really well. All the potential bad situations all went out the window and it was a huge relief. The biggest thing for me was that I kept my eye sight. Now it’s done, I have just been focusing on getting back on the field.

But again the support was amazing, even from the nurses and staff at Nepean Hospital, they looked after me really well. You have been very active in the community. How do you feel about being a key ambassador of Bowel Cancer Australia? It has been an awesome experience from day one. It’s a huge privilege for me to be representing something that is so important to me. Playing in the NRL is a dream that so many people want to reach and it has been mine since the first time I touched a football. I am completely aware of how lucky I am to be in this position and from this I feel like I need to give back as much as possible. I have always had so much help along the
way. I get so much satisfaction from helping people, I really enjoy it and in the end I just want to be a good person. I saw Bowel Cancer Australia as the opportunity for me to give back. It really hit close to home as my wife’s uncle, plus my good friend’s sister have both fought and won the battle against bowel cancer. Seeing the impact first hand, I wanted to do anything I can to help out and spread the message. Ending on a positive note, what is your top tips on growing and maintaining that lush beard? I was completely gutted when I had to shave my beard off before the surgery. It was so bare, I left like a ghost! But when I had some size and depth in my beard, I would always maintain and groom it. I use a variety of products to keep it looking full and lush. I always got my barber to
professionally maintain it as I was never confident enough to do it myself. I recently bought a 9 in 1 shaver which has got everything including a nose trimmer which has boosted my confidence to do it myself! We look forward to seeing Josh back on the field for the mighty Panthers. Follow Josh to keep up to date with his recovery, Rugby League and community ambassador roles.

Helping THE HAVEN Nepean Women’s Shelter Shining a light on domestic violence. Sadly, the Penrith LGA has the second highest reported incidents of domestic violence in Sydney. Between October 2016 to September 2017 alone, there were 1,094 incidents of domestic violence reported in the Penrith region. This does not take into account the incidents that go unreported, which can be as many as 70% of incidents. The statistics are alarming and the reason why Chair of The Haven, Sharon Levy, began having sleepless nights. “When I heard that one-intwo women, who get up the courage to leave [their partner and home and], are then 8 • #PANTHERPRIDE

Only months old, The Haven provides three months crisis accommodation for up to six women and their children with approximately 19 beds available. This equates to almost 7,000 bed nights a year. With a Shelter Manager, trained caseworkers and community volunteer services, The Haven offers women in crisis a huge amount of support including counselling, finances, employment, education, healthcare, legal advice and support, as well as stable accommodation to name a few, with the aim to help DV victims build their confidence and self-worth back.
How we have helped Panthers Penrith is a proud supporter of The Haven and it’s initiative to assist and protect domestic violence victims in our community. To show our commitment to The Haven and the Nepean community, we have pledged financial support until 2021 to assist with running costs and ongoing accommodation. How can you help? Roasted Spice
Cauliflower Salad Looking for a healthy winter alternative that will make your tastebuds sing? This salad is a popular choice on the Kelly’s Brasserie Winter Menu.
Ingredients: • 200g snow pea tendrils • Freshly picked mint, parsley, coriander and dill • 1 tsp nigella seeds • 1/4 cup toasted almods • 1/4 cup puffed quinoa • Extra virgin olive oil • 1kg cauliflower florets Dry Spice Mix Ingredients: • 1 tsp fennel seeds • 1 tsp cumin seeds • 1 tsp coriander seeds • 1/4 tsp cloves • 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper • 1 tsp salt • 2x tbsp. ground tumeric Yoghurt Dressing Ingredients: • 200g Greek/plain yoghurt • 1 tsp garlic crushed • 1 tbsp. lime juice • 1 tsp sugar
Method: Preheat the oven to 160˚C For the spice mix, dry roast whole spices in a small frying pan over high heat until fragrant (30-40 seconds). Cool, then grind in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Add turmeric and pulse in grinder or stir to combine. 3. Coat cauliflower with small amount of vegetable oil and sprinkle evenly with spice mix. Roast in oven for 10 minutes until tender. 4. To create the yoghurt dressing, combine Greek yoghurt, crushed garlic, lime juice and sugar with a whisk until smooth and sugar has dissolved. 5. To assemble salad, place warm cauliflower on platter, drizzle with the yoghurt dressing. Add all other ingredients together in a bowl and toss with a little extra virgin olive oil and sea salt. Pile high on top of the cauliflower and serve immediately. 1. 2.

We’re really excited that you are bringing your show to Penrith! Excited to be back in the West? I’ve been waiting to get back to Penrith so I’m really excited! I have a special show planned of all the favourites as well as some new ones. Can you tell us what audiences can expect from the show? I like to work on each show individually to create a story and flow for the show. The audience can expect the favourites and some new ones too… it’s going to be a fun night! Unbroken is your first album in seven years – how does this album compare to your last? Why the long gap between the albums? I’ve either written or co-written every song on this album, this
is probably the most personal release I have ever done, so I wanted it to be perfect. I’m really proud of it. What do you believe is the secret to having such a long and successful career? Just being honest and true to you, I’ve never pretended to be anyone else. I don’t and I reckon people see through that if you do. You have been on Australian Idol and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me out Of Here – are there any other television show goals you would love to conquer? Nothing at all, if anything I wouldn’t mind exploring acting but I think I might be done with reality TV although both have been great experiences for me. You have been a prominent figure in raising money for charity.
What do these charities mean to you? To hear recently that I have raised over one million dollars for charities was pretty cool. I’m always glad to give back; this has been a fortunate life. What’s a random fact that fans may not know about you? I love to cook. At home and off the road I love to grow vegetables and I love to cook for my family. What’s next for Nollsie? Bingo Panthers have a great range of Bingo games available from Monday to Friday. With morning sessions starting 9am week days, TC’s Sports Bar is the place to be for some bingo fun. We also offer a night session on Tuesday nights from 6pm and, if you are looking for something a little bit cheeky, we offer Drag Bingo once a month in Dom’s Cocktail Lounge. FREE Trivia Every Tuesday from 7pm in Kelly’s Brasserie you can stretch your brain muscles and test your knowledge at our free trivia night. With free entry and a weekly cash jackpot, our Tuesday Trivia is a barrel of fun. If you can’t make Tuesday, try our Wednesday Triviaology session in Squires Terrace Bar. IT offers general knowledge questions with a hilarious twist. FREE Gentle Exercises Start your week with a bounce in your step with a Gentle Exercise class. Line Dancing If you like to boot, scootin, boogie, every Wednesday night award winning choreographer, Mark Simpkin from the Southern Cross Line Dancers, teaches Line Dancing classes. If you have never danced before, Mark runs beginner classes from 6pm to 7.30pm followed by intermediate classes from 7.30pm to 9pm. Available to members for only $5 and $10 for visitors, purchase your tickets on the day from Reception. Cricket Club (Seniors) Part of our sub clubs, the Panthers Cricket Club meets on the first Monday of each month. Social Euchre If you have ever wanted to learn to play a game of euchre, the Panther
