Riding For The
Disabled Association
Nested in Orchard Hills for the last 35 years, the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Nepean Centre has been giving disabled people the opportunity to ride and enjoy a range of activities connected with horses and riding.
Taking anyone with any or all disabilities, programs such as horseback riding and horse skills are both therapeutic and recreational for participants, allowing them to gain a huge range of benefits including: • Improved balance and posture • Assisting with the development of fine and gross motor skills • Promotes decision making and thinking ahead • Motivation and learning – encourages reading and speech through games • Develops hand and eye co-ordination • Development of language and communication skills • Memory improvement and concentration • Personal challenge leading to achievement • New mobility and access to new areas • Social integration • Mental stimulation 10 • #PANTHERPRIDE
• Increased self-esteem • Learn the value of rules and • Promotes a general feeling of well-being. During each of these incredible programs, horses are matched to a participant according to their needs and goals. At the RDA Nepean Centre, there are 15 beloved horses that range in a variety of shapes and sizes including standardbreds, thoroughbreds, a draft cross, stock horse, an Arabian, Welsh ponies, a Shetland pony and mini horses. In their own special ways, each of them are very smart, gentle, huggable and patient. Horse riding programs not only give the disabled the confidence to ride regularly, but many will even participate in competitions such as the Mounted Games. For people with disabilities that prohibit them from riding, the horse skills class allows for people to connect with
horses while learning how to care for them by grooming, feeding, leading and even learning how to conduct first aid on them. This year there are 33 riders and 12 horse skills participants, but next year the RDA is planning on expanding with two brand new programs: carriage driving and connections EFMH&L. Carriage driving will allow participants to learn how to drive a horse in a carriage with a coach. Specially built carriages will give opportunities to both ambulant people and those who use wheelchairs. It is yet another activity in which participants can grow to participate in competitions, dressage and Mounted Games. The Connections EFMH&L program combines equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) and equine-facilitated learning (EFL) to create experiential forms of psychotherapy and learning that involve horses. Participants are given the opportunity of bringing their own psychologists or therapist to help them grow. While the horses might be stars of the show, it is the incredible volunteers that are the real unsung heroes. This volunteer-led organisation ensures that these programs are not only possible, but the horses are also looked after and cared for. Dedicating their time and skills, volunteers get to watch people watch people with disabilities achieve goals they never thought was possible.

Always looking for volunteers, the RDA require assistance in the cost of looking after the horses, fundraising, and growing programs to accommodate all the people who are in need of it. Here are our top tips on planning your wedding day.
1.
GUESTS Work out the approximate number of guests before booking a venue or room. This will ensure you allow enough room for dance floors, bars and waiters.
2.
BLOCKOUT DATES Some venues organise more than just weddings for example conferences, concerts, exhibitions, birthdays, anniversaries, grand finals and more. Pick a few dates that suit you and be flexible, just in case your first option does not work out.
3.
WEATHER If an outdoor ceremony, always have a backup plan. The weather may be unpredictable, but your wedding day doesn’t have to be if you choose an indoor option in advance.
4.
VENDORS The venue that you book will have many contacts that they work with regularly. Consider asking them who they choose to work with to help ensure your event runs smoothly.
5.
ACCOMMODATION It’s easy to think about the accommodation you want on your special day, but what about your guests? Consider something close to the ceremony location ie, a short walking distance or taxi trip away. Ask them if they can hold a number of rooms for your guests to book. Trust us. Your guests will thank-you for this.
6.
SCHEDULE SETUP If you are renting a venue space and are bringing your own vendors, ask the venue what time you can commence setting up. Why not see if you can start setting up the day before the wedding?
7.
READ EVERY CONTRACT Read over every detail of your contracts with your vendors to ensure everything is correct. Particularly important to note is payment and cancellation terms, as well as the event times.
8.
FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE Every bride and groom will tell you that something on your wedding will go wrong, but guess what? Most of the time, your guests will not notice. Don’t get hung up on the small details. You’re getting married! Enjoy every moment you can with your family and friends as they celebrate your momentous occasion.

San Choi Bao
A popular dish on The Ming menu, try making it at home with this easy to follow recipe
Ingredients: • 1 iceberg lettuce • 3 tsp vegetable oil • 3 shallots finely sliced • 2 tsp fresh ginger • 500 g chicken mince • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tsp sesame oil • 230 g can water chestnuts, drained and chopped • 1 tsp sesame seeds Try it for yourself at The Ming $15.50
Method: Select six lettuce leaves and trim with scissors to make large cups. 2. Refresh with ice water to crispen. 3. Heat oil in a wok on high heat. Stir-fry shallots and ginger for 1 minute. 4. Add chicken mince and cook for around 5 minutes, until colour changes. 5. Add hoisin, soy sauce, sesame oil and water chestnuts and continue to stir-fry for another 2 minutes. 6. Check seasoning and transfer to a serving bowl. 7. Arrange lettuce cups on a platter. Spoon a little chicken mixture into each leaf, garnish with some shallots and sesame seeds. 1.
