FOOTBALLER,
ACADEMIC, CEO Born and bred in the West, Corey Payne is taking Panthers to the next level. Corey Payne’s background proves he is the man to lead the Panthers into their next chapter and with Penrith quickly becoming the new western corridor of Sydney, he is eager to make the club its central hub. The new Penrith Panthers CEO, who played for three NRL clubs, began his role at the foot of the mountains on May 16 after finishing his tenure at Woolworths where he was part of the supermarket’s transformation team. His rugby league experience coupled with a masters of commerce makes him the perfect fit for the Panthers and he has hit the ground running on a range of initiatives to make the Panthers the best sporting organisation in the country. “I think the main ambition and it is a vision that Gus set out some time ago, is to be the number one sporting organisation in Australia,” he said. “I believe having this facility gives us the best opportunity to not only attract talent from outside but from within our local region. It allows us to retain them and helps us develop them. “Second to that we have the largest junior league association in Australia. The development system that has been put in place is producing results. We went one
game short in the Harold Matthews, we won the SG Ball and won nationally, we are defending Premiers in the under-20s and are on top of the competition, we have produced three or four Junior Kangaroos and Kiwis, we had half a dozen in the CityCountry and couple in the State of Origin. “The other part of it is you are in western Sydney, the new West or western corridor. This is the growth engine of Australia. If you look at all the estimates and projections of what the population and growth looks like over the next decade, this is where it’s all going to be. “All the people that live out here all need to dress themselves, buy groceries, use banks and financial services, there is going to be more people here to consume it so that it is an untapped market which should in turn look like more corporate dollars flying, more corporate business moving to the region and the Panthers being central to all of this should put us in a fantastic position moving forward.” The former nominee for Young Australian of the Year also established the Future Directions Network to provide financial support, mentoring and career advice to young people in western Sydney.
Couple that with being awarded a Churchill Fellowship, working overseas for two years and a rugby league career spanning 7 years proves he has the right credentials for the job. Despite admitting he still loves being around rugby league, Payne ruled out any chance of him lacing the boots up again. Rather he will use his all-round knowledge to help shape Panthers into a dominant sporting force. “I’m not new to rugby league. I am new to the Panthers and new to learn about Penrith and its surroundings but I am not new to western Sydney. I am born and bred in St Johns Park,” he said. “This is the new west. It’s not Parramatta and Liverpool anymore. But definitely having an understanding of rugby league and playing that game at the highest level being the NRL with three different clubs puts me in good stead. WALL ACIA.PANTHERS.COM.AU
