elcome to the first edition of The Panther. This magazine is a revision of our What’s On Guide and includes content that you’ve told us you want to see. We hope you like it. We have some great news to kick-off The Panther with the announcement of a new multistorey car park. The construction of the car park, to be located at the northern side of the club, will begin in March and is expected to be completed in approximately 10 months. Most importantly, it will make it easier for you, our members, to enter the club. It will include a car wash, retail space and a 40m air-conditioned walkway into a third entrance to the club via Lakeview Bar (see page 20 for more details). Still on developments we can announce the EVAN Theatre’s renovation is complete with the first show to take place on 3 March. We have a full line-up of entertainment booked in (see pages 8-13) so don’t miss out on your chance to experience the new EVAN Theatre.

Rugby league is back for another year and we can’t wait to watch our mighty Penrith Panthers vie for glory this season. Trent Merrin has been a standout since joining us last year and has opened up on the way he turned being bullied into a healthy lifestyle and becoming a NRL player (see page 4). While you are into the footy reading, check out our Q&A with Coach Anthony Griffin and find out all about the man behind your Penrith Panthers (see page 15). Easter is also around the corner and we have a Family Fun Day planned for you (see page 23). Our first home game of the NRL season is against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday 18 March. I hope to see you cheering on our boys at Pepper Stadium.

TRENT TALKS HEALTHY LIVING

F

rom bullied and obese youngster to NRL star, Trent Merrin is aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The Panthers forward was forced to keep an eye on his diet over the years having battled obesity from a young age including being bullied at school. 4

#PANTHERPRIDE

Taking it personal, Merrin was determined to turn it around by working hard on the training paddock and living a healthy lifestyle. “I was probably one of the bigger kids growing up. I have always battled obesity and over the years

I have been pretty harsh on myself and kept track of what I eat and my dietary intake,” Merrin said. “Especially being a professional athlete there’s a lot of things you need to know about your nutrition.

“Obviously I faced bullying. As a kid I had to train hard and work harder than the other kids around me. I had to train at such a young age to balance it out.

you upbeat and ready to take on the day. There are a lot of positives that come from it, as well as looking good and feeling good, it gives you a lot of confidence.”

“That’s where I was having some issues at school and everything that comes with it. In saying that it was a blessing in disguise, I learnt a lot about myself as a kid and it really put me in a good position to learn a lot about the body.”

The Panthers NRL side take their lifestyle choices seriously as well with a nutritionist now a part of the team.

Nutrition is the key to a healthy diet which should include green vegetables, a source of protein and low complex carbohydrates, according to Merrin. The 27-year-old believes there are several positives that come out of eating healthy that makes a difference to everyday life.

The nutritionist sets out menus for the entire NRL squad on a daily basis with all meals cooked in the kitchens of Panthers Penrith. Coupled with his own dietary plan, Merrin believes he is in the right frame to have another successful season at the foot of the mountains. “I think that if you are eating well, your body is going to respond better, you are going to look after yourself more and stay clear of injuries and sickness,” he said.

I think portion sizes are of a key and to eat consistent during the day in small amounts has really helped me fight obesity.

“I think the main goal this year is to go better than we did last year and build on it,” he said.

“A healthy, nutritious diet is something that everyone needs. It really helps you throughout the day, gives you more energy and keeps

“The grand final is in everyone’s minds, but the hard work is between here and there and that’s what we will focus on.”

FAVOURITE MEALS Baked veggies with a source of protein whether it is fish, chicken or red meats. In summer, especially out here, a nice cold salad with some hot baked veggies in it. I don’t mind my stir fries as well.

LOVE & LIFESTYLE Merrin shares his positive and healthy lifestyle with fiance and professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons. Despite admitting it gets interesting in the kitchen, he says it is great to bounce ideas off each other. “It’s great that we both eat the exact same sort of food and love the exact same sort of food. It’s a battle in the kitchen because we both want to get it all done. But it is a great balance there, we both love the same nutritious foods and it’s easy when we go shopping.”

FEATURING THE ROBERTSON BROS & SCOT ROBIN

S

ince their early childhood Ben and Geoff Robertson have listened to the country rock “n” roll hits of the Everly Brothers. The duo took up singing together during their teenage years and have been working on music since they left Springwood High School and are best known for singing the theme song for hit TV soapie Home & Away, as well as being regulars on the Ray Hadley Show. Fast forward to 2017 and local boys The Robertson Brothers have created a show that has sold out theatres across Australia for the last two years and they cannot wait to grace the stage at Panthers Penrith on July 1. “Three years ago we put together the show and it’s been the best thing we’ve ever done. We’ve gone 8

#PANTHERPRIDE

around the country on tour and been sold out for 2 years,” Ben Robertson said. “When we were little it was mum and dad that used to play the Everly Brothers music as they were fans. Because we were used to listening to the music and enjoying it as well as our own type of music it was pretty easy to adapt. We enjoy it that much that I wish we did it 15 years ago.” Joined by internationally renowned Scot Robin, who plays the perfect Buddy Holly, the show is not to be missed. Despite admitting the show would be well received by an older audience, Robertson is confident the younger crowd will also appreciate the fantastic music they have in store.

“If you are into Buddy Holly you definitely have to watch Scott as he looks and sounds exactly like him. They used him in West End London for a show titled Buddy so he is fantastic,” he said. "It is also good for the younger audience because there are a lot of songs from the Everly Brothers which pop up in movies or animated films and out of nowhere they are singing along. “We’ve got lots of video screens and images for people to remininsce during the show. Overall it is a lot of singing, dancing and reminiscing.” To book your tickets to see The Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly LIVE in our EVAN Theatre on 1 July, call 1800 061 991 or visit our website.

GETTING TO KNOW HOOK

O

ur editor Chris Georgakopoulos sits down with Penrith Panthers head coach Anthony Griffin to learn all about the man behind our side.

You’ve been in Penrith for over a year now, how are you enjoying being here? I’ve really enjoyed it. From the first time I got here it just felt very right both from a football and community point of view. I’m a Queensland country boy so a town like this the size of Penrith is an environment that I am used to. I’m from Rockhampton originally. There’s a similar feel to it, the people are grassroots people, love their football. I spent a lot of time at Redcliffe as well which has a lot of similarities as well because it is a one team town 12

#PANTHERPRIDE

and everything revolves around the team and the leagues club. I really like the feel of the place.

What do you enjoy doing away from football?

I have three children so my wife and I spend a lot of time on the weekends following them around with their sport and different things. We’re a nice tight knit family and whatever spare time I get I try and devote to them. My kids are 13, 16 and 18 now but the two younger ones play a lot of school sport so I try and get to that as much as possible in football season. Also whatever time I can get socially to be around the house is nice. That’s the main thing, I don’t have much time for anything else. Once the season starts if I get a day off here or there I'm normally trying to do something with your family.

Do your kids play rugby league?

My son plays rugby union. He doesn’t get an opportunity to play rugby league at the school that he goes to and cricket. My daughters are into water polo and netball. It does give me a break from rugby league.

We know that being an NRL coach is a very difficult job, can you run us through one of your normal days?

I try and be as hands on as possible. It’s a type of role these days that you can easily find yourself getting dragged away from day to day coaching because of the size of staff and other commitments you can fall into the trap of designating. Basically in the off-season we train every morning so I am in here at about 5.30am. I like to do a bit of training myself before the

day starts. We will train at 7am. We video every session so after training we check it and if there is anything we want to show the players either individually or as a group we do so. Then the players will go through a series of weights groups. I like to, where possible, be at those sessions as well. In the afternoon we are planning the next day or next week. We like to stay well-planned of where we are. We liaise with all the staff, and talk to the physios about injured players. Normally it is a pretty full day. I also like to, where I can, watch the NSW Cup train and even the younger grades.

Any advice you would give to young players aspiring to make the NRL?

Number one is get yourself a goal and believe in yourself. You also

need to have a target or a goal that you are wanting to chase. Also they have to enjoy what you are doing and not get too far ahead of yourself. In the end it is

a lot of hard work and the harder you work the luckier you will get. Depending on your age if you are younger you have to have something to aspire to.

QUICK FIRE Hobbies? Not many. I’m not a golfer or someone that needs to be somewhere all the time. It’s pretty casual. Favourite meal? I got a couple but probably steak and chilli sauce and I also love pasta or a pizza. Favourite Drink? XXXX Gold – going back to my roots. Favourite TV Series or movies? I’m a mad sports fanatic so I watch anything on sport. If I’m home Super Saturday is always good. You have the NRL and AFL all at the same time. I do like going to the movies with my wife if there is a good movie on

WORK TO COMMENCE ON MULTISTOREY CAR PARK

C

onstruction on a new multistorey car park at Panthers Penrith will begin in March this year.

“The construction of a new multiplatform car park will be of great benefit to our club,” Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher said.

Located at the northern end of the club, the new car park will hold 517 car spaces and will cost approximately $18 million to build.

“Our existing foyer entrance will remain, there will be a second entrance from the carpark’s walk bridge next to Lakeview Bar, and the level 1 rear entrance will also remain.

It will include a 40m air-conditioned walkway which will connect to a new entrance from Lakeview Bar, a car wash and retail space downstairs. Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher said the new car park will make for a more comfortable entrance to our club.

“Most importantly it will give our members sheltered parking, a shorter walk to our club essentially making it much more comfortable.” Our VIP car park will not be in use during construction with alternative options currently being decided. An alternate route to Aqua Golf will also be created.

• 517 car spaces • Approximately $18 million construction • Located at the northern end of the club • Carpark will create sheltered parking • 40m air-conditioned walkway to enter the club • Creating third entrance to the club via Lakeview Bar • Construction expected to take approximately 10 months

“It’s all a bit of fun, I can’t believe the excitement most of our participants get playing a game of Aqua Golf. You wouldn’t find any better scenery

for this and the night time lighting at the facility are just wonderful. “The aim is to hit the targets. There are nets in the targets and hole in one is cash prizes which are smaller holes. On occasions I have seen 7 holes in one in a day so they are definitely achievable. “There are also smaller targets for the little ones which are images from Finding Nemo. Panthers is in the process of

upgrading a number of aspects of Aqua Golf after acquiring it recently. Mr Kelly, who has most recently been a motel manager and a keen golfer, said the park is ideal for kids birthday parties or corporate events. “We are in the process of sprucing a few things up as well to enhance everyone’s experience here and we are definitely looking forward to it.,” he said. “We have had a lot of kids birthday parties and I think it is because it is probably an easy option for the hardest working people on the planet being mothers. It is reasonably cheap, you can come and have a bucket of balls and have a lot of fun for a couple of hours.”
