After receiving negative feedback from students last spring, instructors have restructured the lecture format of COS 226: Data Structures and Algorithms this fall. The new organization allows students to choose among attending in-person lectures, viewing recorded lectures on online learning platform Coursera or attending one supplementary “flipped lecture” a week.

COS 226 was first offered on Coursera during the spring of this year through videos created by computer science professor Robert Sedgewick, a vocal proponent of online education. Sedgewick has also taught the course and designed other materials for it, including the textbook and lecture slides.

sity is the dissemination of knowledge, and this seemed like a fine opportunity to do that,” Sedgewick said of Coursera.

Last semester, computer science lecturer and course instructor Joshua Hug decided to incorporate Coursera materials into the COS 226 curriculum by replacing seven regular lectures with “flipped” lectures throughout the semester. Before these lectures, students were required to watch the corresponding video on Coursera in preparation for active learning activities, problem solving and Q&A in class, according to the course website.

This fall, flipped lectures no longer replace in-class lectures but are offered as a supplement.

Hug explained that an inclass survey taken during the spring indicated mixed reviews. While he expected

the distribution of opinions to resemble a bell curve, the results showed that there were many students who really enjoyed the flipped form, while others were very opposed to it, Hug noted.

“There was one guy, after the first survey, [who] said it was the coolest thing he’d ever done. He really wanted to take us to lunch,” Hug said. “Other people were like, ‘This is the worst thing to happen to education. I want to die.’”

While some students appreciated the interactivity, others were burdened by the amount of prep time required for a flipped lecture.

“Going into it, I wasn’t so sure about flipped lectures because it means that students have to do more … and instructors have to do more. And I didn’t think that was right. That’s why we try to come up with a balance,” Sedgewick said.

Mark Fillmore ’15, a COS concentrator who took the course in the spring, said that while some of his classmates found that Coursera lectures were not very engaging, he appreciated this resource, as there was a drastic difference in his understanding of the lecture material if he watched the Coursera video beforehand.

Due to the very negative reaction from some students, Hug opted to offer a weekly optional flipped lecture this fall in addition to, rather than replacing, the regular lectures so as to accommodate students of both learning preferences.

“I wanted to give everyone what they wanted, if possible,” Hug said, adding that he decided he didn’t want to alienate the “small but significant number of students who were really, really underserved by the flipped model.”

The flipped section sees a significantly smaller attendance than does the regular lecture, with around 20 to 30 attendees rather than around 140 students. As Hug explained, students seem satisfied with the course organization this semester.

Ellen Zhou ’16, an electrical engineering concentrator currently enrolled in COS 226, explained that she found the flipped lectures to be very helpful. “We don’t go over the same material, and we go more in depth … and the main thing is that we’re able to clear up any confusion that we have.”

Although Zhou attends regular lecture, she said that she “really likes the Coursera lectures” because they provide another source from which to study independently and explain the material from another point of view.

LGBT Center offers online chat outreach program

Collaboration helps launch recycling pilot program

Those questioning their sexual identity or searching for LGBT resources need not look further than their computer screens.

The LGBT Center’s Outreach Chats Program, a service providing an anonymous online chat resource for students to communicate with trained peer educators, is now receiving regular business in its second year. While the chats are a less visible resource than other campus initiatives offered by the LGBT Center, their anonymous nature offers more hesitant students the opportunity to get difficult questions answered privately.

Debbie Bazarsky, director of the LGBT Center, explained that the program was started in fall 2012, with its unique anonymous format giving students a resource without demanding visibility from them.

“There are a lot of students who are questioning their gen-

der orientation or sexual identity who don’t feel comfortable sitting down with someone and talking about it,” Bazarsky said. “Sometimes that just feels too visible, so the chats provide an opportunity for people to get resources and support from other students without being so visible.”

Since the program’s inception, peer educators who responded to students through the chats have fielded questions of varying complexity, Bazarsky said. The types of questions that get asked are about subjects like coming out to friends and roommates, explaining gender identity to family, where to get an HIV test and when certain programs are happening.

Bazarsky said she hopes the Outreach Chats can provide a more comfortable and convenient way for students to access a resource they may need.

“We’re reaching people who have questions, and we’re supporting people who maybe don’t feel comfortable getting support in other ways,” Bazar-

sky said.

The anonymity of the chats may also address student hesitation to go to the LGBT Center in person. Other LGBT Center initiatives, such as panels in residential colleges and peer support and discussion groups, require a more visible involvement.

“There can be a stigma toward going to the center, or a fear about talking to someone in the center and being seen by someone you know,” Eskender McCoy ’14, a peer educator and group facilitator at the LGBT Center, said. “Ideally, [chatting] would enable people who aren’t confident enough to physically go to the center to get questions answered.”

Though the LGBT Center has not collected statistics from the chats, Bazarsky said her guess is that many of the students who have been using them are not yet out to everyone and are less likely to be already engaged with the LGBT Center. By Anna Windemuth A single-stream recycling pilot program in 1939 and Edwards Halls was launched Monday through the collaborative efforts of Greening Princeton, a student group that promotes environmental sustainability, and University Building Services.

Students in these buildings may dispose of all recyclable materials in one receptacle rather than separating them, as the current recycling system requires.

The debate over transitioning to single-stream recycling has been an ongoing one, according to Director of Building Services Jonathan Baer. Building Services was already considering the switch when Greening Princeton Co-President Misha Semenov ’15 approached Baer last semester with a proposal for a pilot program.

“Greening [Princeton] has been easy to work with.

They’re enthusiastic, they’re energized, they’re thoughtful and they’ve done some very nice marketing for the pilot program,” Baer said.

Greening Princeton spent last week collecting data about current recycling trends in both 1939 and Edwards and will use this data to measure the effectiveness of single-stream recycling combined with outreach efforts to educate students

about the process.

The organization is currently promoting the program through f liers, stickers and door-to-door communication, according to Semenov.

“We’re going around and knocking on every single door in Edwards and 1939 until we make sure we’ve talked to every single person,” he said. “I think at Princeton, most people don’t know anything about how our recycling system works,” he added.

The blue recycling bins provided to each dorm room only accommodate paper and cardboard, Semenov explained. Plastic bottles and cans must be disposed of separately. However, Greening Princeton’s data shows that many students were already using single-stream methods though the University does not. As a result, blue bins with incorrect contents are sent to regular trash instead of recycling.

A single-stream system, combined with educational campaigns, will increase recycling rates, members of Greening Princeton suggested. The group will collect data again next week to evaluate possible changes in student recycling behavior.

With a number of schoolwide events approaching, an email sent to students by the residential college directors of student life warned students to exercise caution over the weekend in light of the seventh case of meningitis associated with the University.

The email, which had the subject “Alcohol and Meningitis,” advised students to prevent the spread of the disease by using their own cups, washing their hands frequently, using hand sanitizer and refraining from sharing drinking glasses, smoking materials or eating utensils.

Alcohol consumption may put students at increased risk for spreading the bacteria that causes meningitis, the email warned.

“The more you drink, the more your judgment may decrease about sharing objects that come into contact with the mouth, thereby increasing your risk of disease,” it read. It also emphasized that despite the popular perception of alcohol as a sanitizer, the volume of alcohol in alcoholic beverages is not enough to prevent the spread of illness.

“Please have fun, but play it safe this weekend!” the email concluded.

The annual campus-wide Orange and Black Ball will take place on Friday night, followed by the Homecoming football game against Yale on Saturday afternoon.

The New Jersey Department of Health declared an outbreak of meningitis at Princeton on May 20, after four University-associated cases had emerged since March.

All six individuals who were diagnosed with meningitis prior to this weekend’s case have since recovered.

The seventh case involved a male University student hospitalized with possible meningococcal disease on Nov. 10. The student sought treatment at University Health Services on Saturday for symptoms of acute illness, according to a health advisory email sent to all undergraduate students Sunday evening. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

halls, in addition to providing alcohol-based hand sanitizer and tissues at all event headquarters and meal sites.

Alumni and visitors returning to campus for Reunions weekend in May received hygiene reminders in their welcome materials.

In order to combat the spread of the disease on campus, the Student Health Advisory Board distributed reusable drinking cups to the student body at the start of the semester in September.

The red cups said “Mine. Not Yours.” and were intended to remind students not to share cups with other students.

“Right now, with meningitis on campus, the best way to stay safe is to only drink from your own cup,” Kathy Wagner, senior health educator for UHS, told The Daily Princetonian in September.

The strain of bacteria responsible for all six previous cases was identified as N. meningitidis serotype B. State law requires all college students living in dorms to receive a licensed meningococcal vaccine, which protects against many strains of the bacteria but does not protect against serogroup B. The bacteria is contagious and can be spread through close contact between people, such as coughing, sneezing and sharing utensils. It is estimated that 5 to 25 percent of the general population carries the bacteria without developing symptoms of illness, the most recent health advisory said. Infection with N. meningitidis can be treated with common antibiotics.

ACLU attorney Crump: Government violating fundamental privacy rights

The government’s mass call tracking program violates fundamental civil liberties and rights to privacy, Catherine Crump, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy and Technology Project argued in a lecture on Thursday.

Crump began the lecture with a simple question: “How many of you have cell phones?”

Virtually every hand in the room shot up.

“It used to be practically impossible for the government to track you without expending tremendous resources,” Crump added. “Practically speaking, the police were unlikely to do it unless they had really strong reason to suspect someone was engaged in wrongdoing.”

But modern technologies have made it simpler for law enforcement to track citizens’ movements and communications, Crump explained, posing a threat to citizens’ privacy. Because this change has been so sudden, the ACLU began working in 2012 to inform citizens that this surveillance exists. The ACLU filed nearly 400 Public Records Act requests with local police departments across the U.S. that year to request information about their government’s policies on warrantless cell phone tracking.

“People did not seem to be concerned that the FBI, for example, was engaged in this,” she added. By showing people the involvement of local law enforcement, the ACLU could demonstrate how extensive the network of surveillance was.

Crump also said the ACLU had obtained a document titled “Retention Periods of Major Cellular Providers,” which recorded the lengths of time various cell phone providers maintained records, produced by the De-

partment of Justice in 2010 to advise law enforcement officers seeking cell phone records. The ACLU posted this on its website, alerting the public to the involvement of cell phone companies as “buffets of information” for government authorities.

Crump also discussed several of the ACLU’s pending cases against the government’s mass call-tracking program.

“We’re the ACLU. We file lawsuits,” Crump said.

The ACLU opposes the NSA’s interpretation of Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allows the government to compel production of all relevant, tangible information which is useful to national security, Crump said.

The ACLU argues that tracking the calls of every citizen cannot possibly be relevant. In response, government authorities have argued that they need a database of all records in order to conduct proper contact chaining analysis.

The ACLU also contends that the Fourth Amendment, which guarantees citizens’ right to privacy, does not allow for such surveillance. Crump likened such surveillance to the location-tracking of vehicles by GPS, which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional in the 2012 case United States vs. Jones.

However, the 1979 case Smith vs.

Maryland, which allowed the government to monitor two days’ worth of a person’s calls, sets a strong precedent for the ACLU to fight, Crump acknowledged.

The ACLU also argues that mass-data collection is in violation of the First Amendment, the right to free speech. A hearing on this issue will take place next week in the Southern District of New York.

Crump also discussed the PRISM and Upstream programs, which allow the government to acquire intelligence about foreigners.

“I don’t think we should be naive that all governments spy on foreigners,” Crump said. “But I do think there’s something new about the scope of this spying.”

Crump said the NSA’s loose interpretation of the FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 has led to an unprecedented amount of tracking, not only of potential terrorists or criminals, but also of politicians, U.S. companies abroad and more. The ACLU filed a lawsuit on behalf of Amnesty International in 2008 on a similar issue, but could not prove definitively that they were in fact being tracked, Crump said.

Crump addressed audience concerns about email security, an issue that came into the spotlight this summer when Lavabit, an email provider who promised complete privacy, was ordered by the government to turn over the SSL key used to encrypt its users’ information. The order was part of an investigation into one of its users, strongly suspected to be Edward Snowden. Lavabit turned over the key, but also suspended its website indefinitely and is currently fighting the case with the ACLU, arguing that it was “unduly burdensome” for the government to ask Lavabit to turn over the SSL key.

In a concluding question-andanswer section, one audience member said she was holding out on the last way to resist NSA surveillance: “I’m still retaining the last vestiges of privacy held to me by not having a cell phone,” she said.

While this may not be an option for everyone, Crump said, it may be the best way to maintain your privacy.

who need and want support but feel uncomfortable coming in to the LGBT Center.

McCoy said he believes that the anonymous chats are worth a shot for nervous students who may be considering using the program. “My stance would be that they have nothing to lose by using the chats,” McCoy said. “They will never be any worse off than when they started, but they could be better off.”

For now, the LGBT Center’s challenge is getting the

word out about this available resource, Bazarsky said. The chats are currently staffed by four peer educators, two of whom monitor each weekly two-hour session. The center is still gauging involvement to evaluate the success of the program and decide whether or not to expand it. Bazarsky noted that participation varies weekly, with two students some weeks, and five in a short amount of time during other weeks.

The Outreach Chats run on Wednesdays when school is in session from 8-10 p.m. and can be accessed online through the LGBT Center’s website.

Despite the divided reception by COS 226 students, flipped lectures could provide students the opportunity to more deeply explore course material in lecture.

As opposed to the traditional teaching model, flipped courses devote the majority of time to the analysis, evaluation and application of material rather than ensuring that students understand and remember key concepts, COS 226 lecturer Ananda Gunawardena explained. Gunawardena has also designed an online repository of courses to teach professors how to flip classes.

“In a large lecture hall, you really don’t get any attention from the instructor … We have 50 slides that we need to get through, and there’s no time for discussion in class.

So the flipped lecture is a way for this discussion outside of class,” Gunawardena said.

Hug noted the benefit of flipped lecture for giving students the most efficient possible use of their time.

“It moves at a certain pace, and if you fall behind, I guess the next 60 minutes you’re in class are going to be kind of pointless,” Hug said in reference to the regular lecture section.

He also noted that for some students, learning the basics from a video makes more sense than learning them

In addition to the benefits of Coursera videos for enriching student classroom experience, they also open the door for further online interaction between student and instructor, Gunawardena said.

Gunawardena has developed an annotation system, “Courseware Salon,” which records students’ viewing habits in order to tailor teaching to students needs, he explained, adding that he is keen on using data to further individualize his instruction.

“With this kind of software, I can actually track and find what problems students are having,” Gunawardena said.

DeZarn of Dining Services has not ruled out another run for state senate

In certain courses, break trips offer extra perk for students

Donald DeZarn, the senior operations manager for Butler/ Wilson Dining Services, lost his bid for a seat in the New Jersey State Senate on Nov. 5, bringing his eight-month campaign on a Libertarian platform to a close.

Instead, Democratic incumbent Linda Greenstein will continue to represent the state’s 14th district.

DeZarn received the Libertarian nomination at a third-party convention in March. He ran on a platform that advocated limiting government, reducing the state’s debt and legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. He garnered about 2 percent of the district’s vote, The Associated Press reported.

“Honestly there was never any hope of winning … [but] I was quite happy,” DeZarn said.

“We ran to get a message out, and I think we were very successful at getting our message out,” he added.

At the University, DeZarn is known for his 17 years of work in Dining Services. He took a yearlong tour of duty in Iraq in 2005.

The campaign for state Senate was DeZarn’s first bid for public office. Despite the loss, he has not ruled out the possibility of running again in the future.

“I hadn’t planned on it, but I’ve had several people approach me about several things,” he said. “I’m considering it strongly,” he said.

DeZarn received little media coverage during the campaign, so he went door-to-door to drum up support, he said. DeZarn said that his opponents, Inverso and Greenstein, agreed to participate in a Mid-Jersey Chamber of Commerce debate on the condition that he would not be invited.

no idea I was running. Allowing me into the debate, that would just be giving me more access to the voters,” DeZarn explained.

“They tried every way possible to ignore me,” he added.

Greenstein and Inverso did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

One of the most prominent points of DeZarn’s platform was his support for the legalization of medical marijuana, which he

particularly supports for veterans. DeZarn was arrested for smoking marijuana at a Smoke Down Prohibition V rally in August.

He appeared in federal court to answer federal marijuana charges in late October and will be sentenced by a judge in December, according to a campaign press release. If found guilty, he may be fined up to $1,000 or be sentenced to a year in federal prison.

It is unclear how a conviction would affect DeZarn’s job at the University.

“We cannot speculate on the outcome of a pending court case, and we do not discuss personnel matters,” University Spokesperson Martin Mbugua said.

Throughout the campaign, DeZarn largely kept his bid for Senate separate from his work at the University, he said.

There is no University policy governing employees who run for elected office in a personal capacity, Mbugua told The Daily Princetonian in March.

Nonetheless, DeZarn said he was thankful that he was allowed to pursue public office and work at Dining Services simultaneously.

“I’m still very thankful that the University allowed me to run the type of campaign that I did — you know, it was a little bit controversial I’m sure to some people,” he said. “I will always be in debt to the University for what they allowed me to do.”

For some lucky undergraduates, fall break wasn’t a break from their courses, though it did involve zip-lining in Costa Rica and riding camels in Morocco. Courses that include all-expenses paid trips during spring or fall break provide memorable lessons, even while they can be expensive and don’t always draw students for the right reasons, students and professors indicated.

While course selection opens the first week of December, beginning with seniors on Dec. 4, students wishing to take courses with trips have already started or submitted applications for them.

Courses for the coming semester that will offer trips during spring break include FRS 116: The Everglades Today and Tomorrow, a freshman seminar on climate change in the biosphere that will visit the Florida Everglades; HUM 336: Shakespeare 450, a course on Shakespeare that will travel to London and Stratford-upon-Avon to view performances given in honor of the playwright’s 450th anniversary; and COM 317: East Asian Gardens, a seminar that will visit Kyoto to study the significance of gardens in East Asia.

Students who have taken courses that offered break trips explained that the trips were an important part of their motivation for taking the course, though never the deciding factor.

“We joked around that the trip was a pretty big factor for everybody, but it seems like everyone is in it for various reasons and approaching it from different perspectives,” Natasha Madorsky ’17 said. She is currently enrolled in FRS 125: Global Environmental Change: Science, Technology and Policy, a freshman seminar on climate change and energy sustainability that traveled to Costa Rica over fall break.

Meanwhile, geosciences professor Gerta Keller, whose GEO 365: Evolution and Catastrophes course travels abroad each fall to study mass extinctions, frankly acknowledged that some students are drawn to her class by the appeal of the trip rather than the content of the course. But she noted that the students’ motivations for picking the class were not overly important to her.

“As long as they learn about science and the environment, that’s great,” Keller said.

Classes that incorporate trips are especially common in environmental-related disciplines, such as geosciences. Keller took her class to Morocco this year to study the unique fossil and rock formations in the Anti-Atlas mountain range.

Professor George Philander, also in the geosciences department, took his FRS 158: The Hedgehog and the Fox course, a freshman seminar on climate change, to South Africa in spring 2011 after he had noticed the “enormous biodiversity” and unique climate surrounding Cape Town during his own travels.

Professors and their departments weigh these benefits against the high travel costs involved. The GEO 365 trip to Morocco cost roughly $25,000 for 11 students in total, according to Keller.

Break trips are typically funded by the department associated with the course but can also receive funding from outside sources. Philander explained that an alumnus expended a special offer to foot the bill for his 2011 freshman seminar trip.

“Princeton is obviously a wealthy place,” he noted.

Emmiliese von Clemm ’14, a participant in Philander’s FRS 158 course, said she thought the University should only sponsor course trips that are essential.

“Sending a group of students

that far for a single week is a little hard to justify,” von Clemm said.

“A week is a very short time, I think, in terms of the relative cost and the effort it takes to get that many people there.”

Most professors and students, however, indicated that what they gained from the experience was well worth the cost.

“The best learning, I think, is hands-on. You get some feel of how you gather data, how you make decisions,” Keller said. “The only way to do that and to really make an impression on students is to go into the field.”

Both Keller and Philander also noted the value of the cultural exposure that such trips brought.

Philander noted how it changed the focus and perspective of his course when his students reached out to high school students living in the slums of Cape Town.

“It was quite unexpected,” Philander said, noting how students forged relationships with impoverished students living in the slums of Cape Town. “It made a very big impression on most students.” von Clemm said the trip changed both the angle of the course for the remainder of the semester and her own perpsectives.

“It definitely changed the way I think about a lot of the issues that were brought up,” she said of the trip.

Although often very work-intensive, course trips can also be exciting recreational experiences: Students in FRS 125 hiked, visited a hot spring and went zip-lining in Costa Rica, while Keller’s students rode camels in Morocco.

But, von Clemm reflected, students should not see the trips simply as tour deals.

“It’s not just a chance to have some fun on Princeton’s dollar, but there’s actually a big educational benefit from it,” von Clemm said.

He also said that students need to be careful not to mix contaminated materials, such as used napkins, with recyclables. “If you put one thing that’s nonrecyclable in a recycling bin, it’s really difficult to recycle everything else,” he explained.

The issue of contamination is consistently raised as a possible downside to single-stream recycling.

Semenov said Greening Princeton hopes to overcome this obstacle through improved communication.

“There is some evidence out there, from other institutions, that single-stream recycling doesn’t always result in higher recycling rates,” University Director of Sustainability Shana Weber, who is working with Greening Princeton to determine the most effective circumstances for recycling, said. Weber explained that the University has been cautious to make sure that when it does make the switch, that it is successful.

In 2011, the University earned a cumulative grade of A-minus — its first Arange grade — on the College Sustainability Report Card published by the Sustainable Endowments Institute.

Yale and Brown scored overall A’s in 2011, while Harvard and Columbia scored an A-minus and a B-plus, respectively. Assessment categories include student involvement, transportation, investment priorities and endowment transparency, for which the University received a D, its only sub-A grade. The institute ceased publication of college report cards after 2011.

Major Mistakes

f you had told me when I graduated high school that I would be a religion major, I would have laughed in your face. I took my first religion course because it was about film, and though religion sounded boring, film sounded cool. Plus, I needed an Ethical Thought and Moral Values class. My falling in love with the discipline came as a total surprise, and it always makes me smile to think that had I not been searching for a good EM, I never would have ended up in the religion department. This is partly why Princeton has these requirements — to encourage students to take things that seem boring or terrifying or alien to us. College, after all, is supposed to be the place where you find what you love and what you want to do. Your education is a journey, everyone says, neglecting to mention that the road becomes increasingly narrow as you get older. For A.B. students, it’s pretty much set in stone by junior fall. Engineers have it even harder: They choose a major freshman spring, and for both schools, it’s pretty hard to switch once you’re in a department. The Princeton website’s “Major Choices” page explains that such changes are rare, but “You may be comforted to know there are sometimes opportunities to change your mind.”

Never has anything been less comforting. Because, guys, seriously, what if we screw up?

What if you think you love art, but you really love math? What if you stumble into an anthropology class after declaring another major and realize you love anthro more than English? I recently stared at the classes offered by the Center for Human Values with a sour feeling in my stomach, wondering whether — instead of dismissing them because they sounded pretentious — I should have actually looked into taking one. The thing is, though, that during my freshman and even in the beginning of my sophomore year, I would have rolled my eyes at the idea of studying ethics. It is only because of the work I’ve done this far in religion that I’ve realized I care — a lot — about morality.

Maybe I should have thought harder about all my opportunities and not dismissed a whole school of intellectual thought so easily. But, honestly, how could I have known where my education would lead or that the decisions I was making would take me somewhere I didn’t expect? How could anybody?

College was once a place where I could do anything and be anyone, full of possibilities and promise, but the problem is that — if you’re doing college right — the whole spectrum of selves available to you necessarily has to get smaller as you go through it. You start out overwhelmed by your options, and everyone tells you to open every door you find, but come sophomore spring you walk through a door and find you can’t walk back through too easily. The volume of our independent work makes this choice especially heavy: Two years of immersing yourself in a subject can be awful if you’re not sufficiently fond of what you’re studying.

Choosing what that will be feels huge, definite, absolute.

But my suspicion is that this choice is actually liberating, not restricting. I’m inclined to believe that the name “Princeton” on a diploma overshadows everything else. The exact discipline we major in means less, I think, than what we’ve learned, and our independent work actually offers us an opportunity to get interdisciplinary, to bend the rules. Even if I never do anything with religion for as long as I live, at least I’ve learned that I care a lot about a just society and ethical systems, and because of this, I have a better idea about the kind of life I’d like to live. Although sometimes when I think about all the things I could have done and could still be doing, I start to freak out a little.

College doesn’t mean the end of our educations. It just means the end of college.

Implementing a data analysis requirement

rinceton’s website explains that distribution requirements “transcend the boundaries of specialization and provide all students with a common language and common skills.” Currently, the University requires A.B. students to complete classes in seven general areas: Social Analysis, Epistemology and Cognition, Ethical Thought and Moral Values, Historical Analysis, Literature and the Arts, Quantitative Reasoning and Science and Technology. Providing a holistic education is the core of Princeton’s mission, and these requirements are a commendable measure toward that end. But Princeton’s formula for liberal education must at times adapt to the world beyond the FitzRandolph Gate. Those students who graduate Princeton with no exposure to computer programming or to basic data analysis leave this school without skills that are fundamental to the world in which we live.

Accordingly, the Board urges the University to replace the STN requirement with a data analysis and computer programming requirement.

Our personal, professional and civic lives are conducted, shaped, monitored and informed by computers and by the data they collect. The recent enrollment explosion in 100- and 200-level computer science classes to some extent reflects student awareness of this fact. This upward trend has stretched the department’s resources thin. The University tried to curb enrollment by designating the most popular courses “No Pass/D/Fail.” This increase is not a fad, just as the Internet, computing and “Big Data” are not fleeting trends.

Instead of fighting student interest, the administration should reexamine and update its understanding of a liberal education.

A computer science/data analysis requirement could be fulfilled by programming or statistics courses. Currently, some statistics classes and most 100-, 200- and

300-level COS classes are designated as fulfilling the Quantitative Reasoning requirement. But this requirement can also be filled by traditional math classes such as calculus that have little to do with programming or statistics, leaving many A.B. students with an inadequate understanding of recent technological developments.

The marginal value of the STN requirement in addition to the STL is minimal when compared to the potential value of a data analysis and computer programming requirement. Recognizing that expanding distribution requirements may impinge upon students’ other academic endeavors, the Board thus believes that the STN should be dropped in order to accommodate the proposed requirement. Computer programming and data analysis would confer skills that are intellectually important and professionally helpful in a wide range of fields. It is no coincidence that a number of humanities departments already require majors to fulfill some kind of a statistics requirement.

COS 126: General Computer Science is already a requirement for all B.S.E. students. But computer science and data analysis courses offer more than just technical skills for students pursuing quantitative degrees; they provide an introduction to a system of thinking and problem-solving without which a modern liberal arts education is incomplete. Even for students who want to pursue careers in fields that are not dependent on computer programming or big data, understanding these concepts is important because they have significantly influenced the broader workings of society. As such, the Board recommends that the University adopt a computer programming and data analysis requirement in order to prepare students for their professional careers and to maintain the comprehensiveness of its educational curriculum.

The humanities debate Aaron Applbaum columnist

T

here has been a trend in the past four decades of University students shying away from the humanities in favor of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The world is becoming increasingly technology-centric. Technical skills are therefore increasingly important, and more people should be interested in pursuing those skills — even in the social sciences, statistics has become absolutely required. Where did the rigorous and serious field of computer science come from? Departments such as math, statistics and physics. To have innovation, technical studies require the engagement of the academy.

Technical skills can lead to a certain set of in-demand jobs. According to information provided by The Wall Street Journal based on census data, high-paying jobs, including those on Wall Street, go to students who graduate in economics and other technical fields. Economics itself has splintered in various forms — Princeton alone has economics, economics with a math bent, Operations Research and Financial Engineering, a certificate in “finance” (which is the number one certificate by popularity) and a Woodrow Wilson

financial policy track. It makes sense that there would be a splintering and expansion of financial fields.

The economy is growing, becoming more complicated, and there are more specific and specialized skills necessary to operate within that economy. The tools to deal with an increasingly complicated system should be increasingly focused.

If students are gravitating toward certain fields, they are necessarily leaving other fields. At the same time that more people are going into finance, fewer are going into the humanities. I believe that this should be of concern, though it is not unexpected and not necessarily bad. It is possible, in the same breath, to bemoan loudly the decline of cultural literacy and understand the increase in utility-centric academic pursuits.

One of the primary reasons to be concerned that fewer students are being educated in the humanities is that America seems to be slowly losing its ties to high culture.

I am, however, not convinced that the decline in humanities majors is necessarily to blame.

The beautiful tradition of Western scholarship is important, but the form of culture-consumption changes — there are trends over time. Aristotle wrote dialogues, but we don’t have all of them; they disappeared as things do when they

are not intentionally preserved. It is somewhat fashionable to lament the death of the opera — more fashionable, in fact, than going to the opera. I personally appreciate the medium but understand that it is not particularly popular right now.

Change is not inherently a normative bad. Works of enduring worth will endure. Homer’s “Odyssey” and the Bible still grace most high school curricula, as they should and as they might continue to do.

It is hard for me to admit that I am not mourning the decrease of humanities majors. I take my rounded education here very seriously, though I am not upset that I do not have to take Greek, Latin and Biblical Hebrew, as I would have if I came here decades or centuries ago. That academic pursuit fizzled to make way for what I consider to be more valuable: our distribution requirements, freshman writing requirements, etc. Even engineering students at Princeton have to take classes in Epistemology and Cognition and Literature and the Arts. But if time changes the Princeton student’s consumption of information, so be it.

Forms of this debate have appeared in many places, including The New York Times. Lamenting the requests he gets to donate his writing, author Tim Kreider wrote in his Oct. 26 column that: “My parents blew tens of thousands of 1980s dollars on

tuition at a prestigious institution to train me for this job. They also put my sister the pulmonologist through medical school, and as far as I know nobody ever asks her to perform a quick lobectomy — doesn’t have to be anything fancy, maybe just in her spare time, whatever she can do would be great…” Point well taken; getting paid money is an important part of working, and the expectation that writers are not due the same respect is unfair. But there is a clear difference between Kreider and his sister. Both of them, I’m sure, are good at their respective jobs, but there is a certain element of technical expertise that separates him from his sister.

Those who work in finance these days have a technical know-how that is new, growing and developing.

The field is becoming more demanding and more specialized.

Perhaps it makes sense that as the field expands and becomes more complicated, more students should pursue an understanding of it.

That humanities are suffering is, of course, sad, but so the trends go: the more technical the world becomes, the more technicians are necessary.

Culture and the Western scholarly tradition are perhaps changing, but surely not dying.

Epperly, Reid, Surace ’90 all viable candidates for FCS postseason awards COLUMN Continued from page 12

was named to the Buck Buchanan Watch List and was the lone Ivy League player to be named to the preseason All-America first team.

What is perhaps frustrating for Reid’s prospects for the Buck Buchanan Award is a familiar problem from last season — he has a huge target on his back. With Reid’s sustained success over the past few seasons as one of the stars of Princeton’s dominant defensive line, he always draws special attention from the opposing coordinator. While numerous double-teams and offensive plays designed to avoid Reid on the field have prevented him from posting the type of absurd statistics that some of his teammates may have, it is because of Reid’s presence on the line that the Tigers’ defense flows so well. Because of the attention he receives, his teammates have that

much more room to wreak havoc on the opposing backfield, break up passes and generally make life very difficult for the offense they are facing. It is for this reason, however, that Reid is Princeton’s most promising professional prospect, projected to go in the middle rounds in the 2014 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, it is also for this reason, despite the way he impacts the field, that Reid has a good case as a finalist but is unlikely to be the winner of the Buck Buchanan Award.

What about the Eddie Robinson Award? Unlike the other two, this award does not have a watch list — instead, the finalists are announced on Nov. 25. And on Nov. 25, head coach Bob Surace ’90 should be, without a doubt, named to the final list of candidates. The turnaround that Surace has engineered is nothing short of miraculous. Princeton football is not even two years removed from completing

its second straight 1-9 season. Of course, these seasons were plagued by injuries and bad breaks, but the depths to which the Tigers had fallen during those two seasons cannot be understated. The 2010 edition of Princeton football was, by objective terms, the worst season in program history, as the Tigers did not win a single Ivy League game. So why am I bringing this up? Because that makes Princeton’s success this season, in addition to the major steps the program took last year, all the more incredible. The Tigers are not just winning — they are dominating the opposition.

However, before hyperbole carries me away, let’s actually look at the extraordinary change in Princeton’s fortunes. It takes time for a new coach to establish success. It takes time for a coach and his staff to establish their offensive and defensive schemes.

It takes time for a coach to recruit. It’s only been four

years since Surace was hired.

That is why Surace should be a finalist and has a very good argument for the Eddie Robinson Award. Of course, in other ranks of college football, four years is unacceptable — success is demanded even before that. But the success of Surace and his team, the way they are crushing their opponents, speaks to the importance of patience with your new head coach.

If you are confident in your hire, give him some time, and despite early struggles, you may find your decision will pay off.

Finally, let’s look at the man perhaps most responsible for this domination.

Epperly, of course, is a nominee for the Walter Payton Award. It is surprising that it has taken this long for him to get there. Epperly has 475 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, with 1,668 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air. Against Cornell, he started the game with 29 straight completions, set-

ting an NCAA record. He is first in the FCS in points per game, second in completion percentage, third in scoring per game and sixth in passing efficiency. These statistics are eye-popping and in and of themselves speak volumes to Epperly’s case for the Walter Payton Award. Add to that Epperly’s instrumental role in driving the Tigers toward an Ivy League title this season, and the case has been built for Epperly not just to be a finalist for the award, but the winner.

But why limit Epperly? The comparison between lefthanded, well-built quarterbacks who both have deep religious convictions, effective ability as runners and very accurate throwing arms is easy. Epperly has been compared, more and more during his run to prominence, to former Florida quarterback and Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow. Epperly is on the Walter Payton Award Watch List. But why shouldn’t he catch the eye of the Heisman

voters? Players from all divisions of college football are eligible, so it is possible. And if you compare his statistics to those of the current Heisman front-runners — reigning trophy holder and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota — Epperly’s match or even surpass theirs.

Of course, Epperly is not going to win the Heisman Trophy. He has not faced the sort of competition that Manziel, Winston or Mariota have faced. But is the argument for his candidacy that out there? Possibly. But give it some thought. Epperly should without a doubt be invited to Philadelphia for the Walter Payton Award.

Perhaps, the voters should also recognize Epperly by letting him follow the footsteps of recently passed Dick Kazmaier ’52, winner of the trophy in 1951, to New York as a finalist for the Heisman Memorial Trophy.

The Tigers’ more experienced players are expected to step up on the road, particularly senior forward Will Barrett and junior forward Denton Koon. Barrett made four of his six three-point attempts last Sunday for 12 points. Koon will likely come off the bench again to add major force in the paint, as he made 50 percent of his field goal attempts last Sunday to lead the Tigers with 17 points.

The Tigers also hope for major contributions from team members who were not on last year’s roster. In particular, the team looks to continue reaping the benefits of senior guard Jimmy Sherburne’s return, as Sherburne missed the

entirety of the 2012-13 season due to injury. The 6-foot-3inch Wisconsin native put up a career-best 13 points for the Tigers last Sunday in his first collegiate start. In addition, Princeton will look to some of its rookies to help out in the first career road game. Freshman forward Spencer Weisz became the first freshman to start a season opener for the Tigers in five years last Sunday, grabbing six rebounds and adding four assists in addition to his five points in an impressive start against FAMU. The Tigers will face a Butler lineup that is not only acclimated to first-class competition, but also has leaders who have gone to the deepest stages of the NCAA Tournament. Senior Khyle Marshall poses one of the biggest threats to the

Tigers’ defense, a powerful 6-foot-6-inch forward who put up 19 points and 13 rebounds in Butler’s opener last Saturday.

The Florida native started 35 of 36 games for the Bulldogs last season and led the team in field goal shooting (.566).

Marshall led the NCAA Tournament with 23 offensive rebounds back in 2011, but he is not the only threat in a wellestablished offense. Senior forward Erik Fromm, sophomore guard Kellen Dunham and junior forward Kameron Woods all reached double digits in scoring in last Saturday’s 89-58 trouncing of Lamar. Butler outscored Lamar 62-22 in the paint, a clear indicator of the threat it poses to Princeton within the arc.

“The key is just to not lose focus. We just have to keep our attention to detail up,” Reid added. “We’re just excited. We’re in a good position.”

and Benvenuti (8G, 7A). Freshman Cat Caro has tallied eight goals and three assists, earning two Ivy League Rookie of the Week awards. In goal, Anya Gersoff has allowed 1.49 goals against average and earned a .738 saves percentage.

“Postseason is more exciting than regular season,” Benvenuti said. “The last few games in the regular season were vital for us to win in order to clinch a place in the tournament, so those games and the upcoming games were and are all must-wins.

That being said, we always adapt a crazy and intense attitude in the postseason that is unlike anything a person has ever experienced. I have learned from experience that the postseason players must lose any inhibition or fear of mistakes in order to be successful.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the second round of the tournament. That game will occur on Sunday at 2 p.m. against the winner of No. 1 Maryland and American.

“The main difference about the postseason is that you either win or your season ends,” Evans said. “We play, even more so, in postseason without any inhibitions, knowing that if we don’t give it our all, our season may not continue.”

Homecoming showdown with Yale set for Saturday

On Homecoming Saturday, the football team has a chance to earn its second straight bonfire.

After defeating Harvard in a triple overtime thriller Oct. 26, the Tigers (7-1 overall, 5-0 Ivy League) face Yale in a game that could earn them a spot in Princeton history.

The Tigers have had a stellar season and are alone atop the Ivy leaderboard, the only undefeated team remaining in the league.

After losing their season opener to Lehigh by one point (29-28), the Tigers have gone undefeated for seven games, a feat they have not accomplished since 1995. Last time Princeton went on a sevengame win streak, Yale ended it.

If that history repeats itself, the Tigers would, with a win by Harvard, be tied for first in the league. If Princeton wins, it stays atop the league with only Dartmouth between it and the Ivy title. If Princeton wins and Harvard loses, the Tigers will clinch the championship this weekend.

Junior wide receiver Matt Costello stressed that his team was viewing this game as it would any other.

“We’re practicing just like we always do, we’re preparing like we always do, we’re not changing any routines,” he said. “We’re keeping everything the same and, come Saturday, everything’s going to be the same, and it’s been working for us. At the end of the day, we just have to play.”

Yale’s defense will prove hard for Princeton to break this weekend, as the Bulldogs are third in the league with 23 points allowed per game. Last weekend, Yale kept Brown to only 25 completions on 46 throws and sacked the QB twice.

To get past the Yale defense, the Tigers will rely on their core of outstanding offensive upperclassmen. Junior quarterback Quinn Epperly has 36 touchdowns this season — 20 of them passes and 16 of them rushing touchdowns. The last time he played at Princeton Stadium, he also set a NCAA Division I record with 29 straight completions to

start the game against Cornell.

His notable performance this year has put him on the Walter Payton Award Watch List, which honors the outstanding player in the FCS. Epperly has a wide range of receiving options to use against Yale. Senior Roman Wilson leads the league with nine touchdown receptions and is second in the league with 97 receiving yards per game. Junior Seth DeValve had seven catches for 77 yards, and junior Connor Kelley had six for 75 last weekend, as each scored.

Though Epperly has been the story of the season, a variety of Tigers will challenge the Bulldogs on the ground. Sophomore running backs DiAndre Atwater and Dre Nelson will see plenty of downs Saturday, as will junior running back Will Powers. Given what head coach Bob Surace ‘90 and offensive coordinator James Perry have been doing this season, Epperly and sophomore quarterback Kedric Bostic could see plenty of rushing attempts.

Epperly for Heisman?

Tigers prepare for national title defense

On Monday, junior quarterback Quinn Epperly was named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. The Sports Network, one of the world’s largest sports information wire services, presents the major awards in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, also known as FCS, at the end of each season. These include the Walter Payton Award for the best offensive player, the Buck Buchanan Award for the best defensive player and the Eddie Robinson Award for the coach of the year. Epperly joins a teammate on these watch lists for the first two awards, as senior defensive tackle Caraun Reid has been on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List since the beginning of the season.

Princeton football, now ranked No. 24, has a reasonable candidate for all three of these awards. I’d like to examine exactly why Epperly and Reid are on those lists, and if it starts to sound like I’m arguing for the Heisman, not the Walter Peyton Award, think about it — it might not be as wild as it may sound at first.

Let’s start with Reid. Coming into this season, Reid generated the most buzz of anyone on the football team. After a unanimous first team All-Ivy selection and second team AllAmerica honors, awarded by The Sports Network, Reid was granted an additional season of eligibility because he missed the 2010 season due to injury. The field hockey team will travel to College Park, Md., for the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament this weekend. No. 8 Princeton (13-4 overall, 7-0 Ivy League) qualified for the tournament after defeating Penn last weekend and finishing the regular season undefeated in conference play. The Tigers are the defending national champions and will face off against Penn State (13-5, 5-1 Big Ten) in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon. Penn State earned an at-large bid despite losing 4-3 in overtime to Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

“There’s definitely a certain kind of pressure that comes along with defending the national championship title,” junior striker Allison Evans said. “But, there comes confidence, as well, because we know as a team what it takes to reach and win the highest level of competition.”

“We are a different team this year, and we don’t hold onto last year’s achievements,” senior midfielder/striker Michelle Cesan added. “We have played every game this season like we are the underdog, and that is how we will enter the tournament.”

The Tigers and Nittany Lions are no strangers to the NCAA tournament. This year marks Princeton’s 19th overall NCAA appearance and 10th consecutive appearance.

Last year’s championship was the Tiger’s first and only NCAA crown. The Nittany Lions have qualified for the NCAAs in 29 of the team’s eligible 32 seasons, including See FIELD HOCKEY page 10

Tigers look to start season Princeton to host defending MAAC champs in home opener 2-0 against Butler

After opening the 2013-14 season with a convincing 6750 win over Florida A&M last weekend, the men’s basketball team will look to start 2-0 for the first time in four years when it tips off against Butler on Saturday night in Indianapolis. The Tigers (10) will also look to beat the Bulldogs (1-0) for the first time, as both of the previous meetings have resulted in Butler victories.

Princeton will hope to maintain its offensive momentum from last week for its first road game of the season. Facing a larger and more physical defense, the Tigers will especially look to continued success from behind the arc. Last Sunday saw the Tigers make 12 three-pointers on 31 attempts, the most three-pointers made since last February against Dartmouth and the most threes attempted in a D-I game since 2009.

This Sunday, the women’s basketball team will have its home opener against Marist in its second game of the season. The team lost its season opener against Rutgers 79-65. Head coach Courtney Banghart will continue to evaluate a young and evolving team as the Tigers take on the Red Foxes (0-1), who come in having won the MAAC eight times in a row.

The team this year has a big hurdle to overcome: the loss of last year’s seniors, including star forward Niveen Rasheed, who led the team

in scoring with 16.7 points a game; third-leading scorer center Megan Bowen; and three-time Ivy League defensive player of the year guard Lauren Polansky.

The Tigers showed that they are up to the challenge in last week’s game against Rutgers. Junior guard Blake Dietrick, who was fourth in scoring on last year’s team, had a game-high and careerhigh 20 points. Sophomore forward Alex Wheatley added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, while senior forward Kristen Helmstetter, who was second in scoring last year, added eight points and nine

rebounds. Freshman Vanessa Smith added seven points off the bench. Head coach Courtney Banghart said the game gave her and her team confidence.

“I actually thought the Rutgers game was a valuable experience for us, for our young team,” she said.

“If we’re not continuing to evolve at this stage [of the season], it’s gonna be a real long year.”

“This group has been very effective on the offensive end, so I think we’ve stressed the defensive side of things thus far,” Wheatley added.

The team has worked in practice to continue honing

its strong offense and improving its defense.

“Each practice, we get a little better and grow in a new direction, both offensively and defensively. We’re always working to improve,” Wheatley said. “I think the game last weekend was a good measure of where we are right now. There are always things we can improve upon, and the lessons we learned from the Rutgers game help us with the rest of our season.”
