Oryza U.S. Rough Rice Recap - Prices Little Changed After USDA Cuts Export Forecast Jun 11, 2014

The U.S. cash market was little changed today after the USDA WASDE report decreased their old crop long grain export projections by 2 million cwts which in turn increased their long grain ending stocks projection by the same amount, leaving the market with an estimated 19.3 million cwts of carry over.As of today, old crop offers held steady as low as $15.55 per cwt fob farm (about $343 per ton) for June shipment while most are still holding out for around $16.11-$16.33 per cwt fob farm (about $355-$360 per ton). Bids from exporters were unchanged around $15.50 per cwt (about $342 per ton) for June delivery while smaller mills were still said to be bidding around $16.00 per cwt (about $353 per ton) for the same delivery period; however, neither bids received much interest.

Biodynamic Farming: Organic, Sustainable Agriculture with a Mystical Twist Jun 11, 2014

Organic rice farming can be a philosophy – a way of life: That’s why Ente Nazionale Risi, Italy’s national agency for the rice-growing sector, will visit Cascine Orsine on June 18.Cascine Orsine is a special farm based in Bereguardo, Italy, not far from the Ticino River. The farm, which produces rice as well as other things, was founded in the late-1960s by Giulia Maria Crespi, an heiress of the family who started one of the most important Italian newspapers, Corriere della Sera.In 1968, Giulia Crespi got cancer; she survived radiotherapy treatment and withdrew to a small Swiss facility, Lukas Klinik, for further recuperation. The Lukas Klinik specializes in curing its patients following an anthroposophical approach to cancer treatment. This integrative approach to medicine includes biodynamic agriculture, a movement initiated by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s and credited as the first intentional sustainable agriculture program. Biodynamic farming seeks “a holistic understanding of agricultural processes” and treats soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock care as ecologically interrelated tasks, emphasizing spiritual, mystical, and astrological perspectives. One of the astrological methods in biodynamic farming considers lunar influences on soil and plant development and coordinates the planting, cultivating, or harvesting based on lunar phases and zodiacal constellations and whether the crop is the root, leaf, flower, or fruit of the plant.Another spiritual aspect of the program is the fertilizers and composts used. Rudolf Steiner prescribed nine different fertilizer preparations that he claimed mediated cosmic and terrestrial forces into the soil. For example, one prescription called for filling the horn of a cow with cow manure, burying it in the autumn, letting it decompose during winter, and removing it for use in the spring. Others called for yarrow blossoms stuffed into deer bladders or chamomile blossoms stuffed into cow stomachs before being buried, decomposed, and recovered for use in the spring.Skeptical? You’re not alone. While biodynamic agriculture now accounts for 142,482 hectares in 47 countries (as of 2011), the movement has seen its share of criticism. At best, critics say it is no different than other organic and sustainable farming methods; at worst, skeptics call it “pseudoscience” and note its lack of scientific evidence. Regardless, it has a strong following in Germany, where 45% of the total biodynamic hectares are located, and globally, over 200 vineyards employ the method.Cascine Orsine has been following biodynamic principles since 1976, thanks to Giulia Crespi’s son, Aldo Paravicini Crespi. While it’s not clear exactly which methods the farm uses on their rice crops, they are certified by Demeter, the first certification and labeling system for organic production, created in 1924. The Demeter association of biodynamic farmers holds the “biodynamic” trademark and requires that Demeter organizations meet specific international standards, including agronomic guidelines, greenhouse management, structural components, livestock guidelines, and post-harvest handling and processing procedures. According to their website, in 2013 Demeter biodynamically certified about 4,800 farms worldwide.

Oryza Afternoon Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Move Higher Despite Softer Grains and Bearish S&D Report Jun 11, 2014

Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery settled 9 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $14.125 per cwt (about $311 per ton). Rough rice futures bounced slightly higher following the release of today’s USDA S&D update. Both Old Crop and New Crop contracts moved higher despite the fact that today’s report was seen as bearish for the 2014/15 marketing year (recap below). Today’s move was likely the result of some short covering on the part of specs who some traders expect have continued to build on a short position in recent weeks. Many trade insiders are now looking for a bit of a recovery as commercials continue to add to long positions ahead of July’s delivery period, and as shorts are forced to pay up or face the responsibility of making delivery in a price cash market. The other grains finished the day with mixed results; soybeans closed about 1.2% lower at $14.4550 per bushel; wheat about 2% lower at $5.8925 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 1% lower at $4.4100 per bushel.U.S. stocks declined sharply on Wednesday, with benchmark indexes retreating from all-time highs, after the World Bank lowered its outlook for global growth. In its report, the World Bank projected the global economy would expand 2.8% in 2014, down from a 3.2% forecast delivered in January. Its estimate for world growth in 2015 held at 3.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 100.30 points, or 0.6%, to 16,845.62. The S&P 500 declined 6.94 points, or 0.4%, to 1,943.85, with industrials the leading laggard in a drop that had all 10 of its major sectors in the red. The Nasdaq shed 3.89 points, or 0.1%, to 4,334.01. On Tuesday, the Dow extended its record climb to a fourth session, and the S&P 500 halted a four-session streak of record closes. Gold is trading a touch lower, crude oil is seen trading about 0.1% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.1% lower at about 1:00pm Chicago time.Tuesday, there were 1,285 contracts traded, up from 957 contracts traded on Monday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Tuesday increased by 274 contracts to 9,081. Tags: U.S. rice prices; U.S. rice market; Chicago rough rice futures

World Bank's Vision 2030 for Myanmar's Rice Exports Jun 11, 2014

The World Bank has given a thumbs up to Myanmar’s rice export scenario. With China among the top importers of rice from Myanmar and the European Union opening its markets for duty-free imports from the Southeast Asian country, Myanmar can expect excellent market for its rice exports in the next 15 years, a recent

World Bank report stated. The other key findings of the report are: Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia are competing as other exporters in the region and that too at a time when Myanmar is focussing on low-quality export markets. Myanmar’s rice exports have not crossed 1.3 million tonnes in the last few years and it may not be able to reach this year’s target of exporting two million tons of rice. The country’s export target for 2020 is four million tons. Low productivity and poor rice quality at the farm level continue to affect Myanmar. The average paddy yield of 2.5 tons per hectare is half of that of other exporters in the region. -

Outdated processing units are causing 15-20 percent losses in quality and quantity during milling.

Myanmar’s main export point at Yangon Port cannot support its exports during monsoons. The cost of export is highest in the region. RECOMMENDATIONS -

Provide accurate market information to participants on production, consumption, exports and prices

-

Don’t limit the maturity of commercial loans to 12 months

Allow direct foreign investment to milling, warehousing and trading. Remove the government approval from the investments made through joint ventures. Don’t hold large government-owned stocks and use minimum farm prices to keep farm production costs competitive. -

Avoid export bans. Don’t cancel or increase tax after issuance on export licenses.

-

Lower port charges and reduce export procedure costs to increase competitiveness of Myanmar rice.

-

Chalk out new national seed policy.

-

Adopt new rice varieties with higher export potential

-

Tie up with the private sector to bring in farmer-friendly technology

-

Improve water management

-

Slash transport costs by investing in farm-to-market roads.

Oryza Overnight Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Quiet Overnight Ahead of USDA S&D Report Jun 11, 2014

Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery were paused 0.5 cents per cwt (about $0.11 per ton) higher at $14.040 per cwt (about $310 per ton) as of 8:45am Chicago time. The other grains are seen mostly higher this morning ahead of floor trading in Chicago: soybeans are currently seen a touch lower, wheat is paused 0.6% higher, and corn is noted about 0.2% higher. U.S. stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Wednesday, as shares in Europe traded lower after the World Bank downgraded its global growth outlook. The organization cut its 2014 outlook to 2.8 percent from 3.2 percent, citing damping expansion in the U.S. in the first half of the year, unrest in Ukraine and China's economic rebalancing. The day will be a quiet one for U.S. economic data, with just the monthly Federal budget statement and weekly mortgage applications. No major companies are due to report quarterly earnings. U.S. stocks were little changed on Tuesday. However, the Dow still managed to eke out its fourth consecutive record high and benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yields hit a one-month peak. U.S. stock index futures are currently trading about 0.5% lower, gold is currently trading about 0.3% higher, crude oil is seen trading marginally higher, and the U.S. dollar is currently trading about 0.1% lower at 8:45am Chicago time. ABARES Estimates Australia MY 2013-14 Paddy Rice Production to Decline to 825,000 Tons; Down 29% from Last Year Jun 11, 2014

Australia's paddy rice production in MY 2013-14 (April 2013 - March 2014) is estimated to decline to around 825,000 tons, down about 29% from about 1.161 million tons produced in MY 2012-13, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).The ABARES attributes the fall in production to a decline in planting area during the marketing year. Paddy rice planting area declined to 81,000 hectares, down about 29% from about 114,000 hectares in the previous year due to a fall in the supply of irrigation water in some regions. About 99% of paddy rice is produced in New South Wales. According to the ABARES data, production from the region stood at about 820,000 tons from 80,000 hectares of planted area. The region produced a yield of about 10.25 tons per hectare during the marketing year.USDA estimates Australia to produce around 958,000 tons of paddy rice (around 690,000 tons of rice, basis milled) in MY 2013-14 (April - March), up about 6% from around 907,000 tons of paddy rice (around 653,000 tons of rice, basis milled) produced last year. It estimates Australia to produce a yield of 8.98 tons per hectare during the marketing year.

Thai Commerce Ministry Mulls Further Rice Auctions; Experts Call for Thailand Rice Sector Revamp Jun 11, 2014

Thailand’s Commerce Ministry is planning to auction more rice through the Agriculture Futures Exchange of Thailand (AFET), according to the local sources. It is reportedly waiting for the military government's nod for implementing the plan. Local sources said that the Ministry is keen on attract more number of buyers to the auctions.Sources noted that the Ministry made the announcement after a joint meeting yesterday with representatives from the Thai Rice Mills Association (TRMA), Thai Rice Exporters Association (TREA), the Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO), the Internal Trade Department and the AFET. The Honorary President of the TREA requested the government to stop rice sales and conduct an audit of the existing stock. Prior to this the Deputy Head of the military government rejected suggestions by various rice sector stakeholders. Separately, rice sector experts and stakeholders called for a total revamp of Thailand's rice sector for it to sustain amid increasing costs and competition from other rice producing countries, according to a press release on the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) website. Participants in a roundtable forum hosted by a local newspaper stressed the need for moving away from massive production and low prices model towards low volume high quality model and focus on serving niche premium markets. Speakers in the forum expressed concern over escalating costs and falling incomes for rice farmers. They noted that all stakeholders from farmers to millers to exporters should be made part of policy making. They noted that even the Thai milling industry is underutilized. While it has a capacity of milling around 80 million tons per annum, Thailand is producing only 28 million tons of milled rice. The participants suggested that the military government could increase farmers' land ownership by allotting at least 50 rai (8 hectares) of land for each farmer to help them reduce their costs significantly. Most of the farmers spend heavily in land rentals. They noted that the government could allot around 100 billion baht in annual budget (around $3 billion) towards land allocation. They noted that the government should move away from all kinds of subsidies and encourage rice farmers and rice sector to become competitive versus other rice exporting countries such as Vietnam and Myanmar. Provisia Rice System to Tackle ALS-Resistant Grasses, Other Weeds Jun 11, 2014

A Germany-based chemical company has developed a new herbicide-tolerant rice system called Provisia Rice System which tackles a wide range of grass weeds, including ALS-resistant grasses, weedy rice and red rice. The new system features the Provisia seed containing the Provisia trait which allows farmers to safely use Provisia herbicide: an AC Case or group 1 herbicide site of action. Provisia helps rice growers control ALSresistant weeds. It has been designed to be used along with Clearfield Production System for rice, allowing

growers to rotate herbicide sites of action for controlling grass weeds including weedy rice and red rice. This provides a sustainable system to manage the risk of developing weeds that are resistant to available herbicides. Initial research on the new system began in 2008 and filed patent applications in 2009. Developed through traditional breeding techniques, its registration is anticipated as early as 2016 in the US, with other countries to follow. It is expected to add flexibility and diversity in herbicide usage which are necessary for clean fields and ultimate weed resistance.Rotating the Provisia Rice System with the Clearfield Production System will reportedly yield best results in weed control and promotes sustainable rice production

Loss of Traditional Markets and Overdependence on China May Prove Risky to Vietnam Rice Exporters, Says VFA Advisor Jun 11, 2014

The Vietnam Food Association (VFA) Advisor warned Vietnam's rice exporters over losing traditional export markets and depending too much on exports to China, according to local sources. He noted that recently, Vietnam has lost many traditional markets either because some of them, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, have started of stepping up their local production; or some of them have started shifting to other exporters such as India or Thailand. But demand from China has more than compensated for the loss and the Vietnamese exporters are convinced that this is a positive sign for the country's rice sector, he says. The VFA advisor told local media sources that Chinese rice importers are keen on piling up rice stocks due to escalating tension in the East Sea over an oil rig, adding that increased demand from China has led to an increase in domestic rice prices of 5% broken rice to increase by VND 200 per kilogram (around $9 per ton) to VND 8,300 per kilogram (around $387 per ton). He says Vietnamese local traders as well as exporters are happy with the rise in prices, which have been declining since the beginning of the year due to excessive supplies and reduced demand for exports. Now farmers and exporters are assured that the output from the 2014 summer-autumn crop would be sold out easily. He calls Chinese action as "abnormal", saying it is a temporary phenomenon. Also rice that is shipped through land borders has increased by about 50% this year, he says. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) estimates that Vietnamese exporters offloaded at least 600,000 tons of rice (around 60% of total exports to China) through land borders since the beginning of this year. The VFA advisor noted that he foresees a risk for Vietnamese exporters if China suddenly stops buying rice from Vietnam. IMD Predicts 70% Probability of El Ni単o in Second Long-Range Monsoon Forecast, Says USDA Post Jun 11, 2014

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a 70% probability of an El Niño occurring in its second long-range monsoon forecast released on June 9, 2014, according to the USDA Post in New Delhi. The USDA Post reports that the IMD has predicted that the seasonal rainfall would be 93% of Long Period Average (LPA) with model error of ± 4 percent compared to the previous forecast of 95 percent of the LPA with model error of ± 5 percent. The LPA is the aggregate of seasonal rainfall from 19502000, and is estimated at 89 centimeters. Based on this forecast, the IMD predicts that there is 26% probability for India receiving normal rainfall (96 - 104% of LPA) and a 33% probability for India receiving a deficit rainfall (below 90% of LPA) this monsoon season. The IMD also predicts North-western India to receive 85% of normal rainfall, Central India to receive 94% of normal, Southern India to receive 93% of normal and North-eastern India to receive 99% of normal rainfall. July rains are expected to be 93% of LPA and August rains are forecast at 96% of LPA, reports USDA Post. However, USDA Post reports that so far Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which indicates the impact of El Niño on the Indian subcontinent, is currently in a neutral state, and so there are chances that the El Niño may weaken. and Bangladesh declined sharply, prices increased in China, India, Vietnam and the Philippines. Prices in Myanmar were relatively stable, says the FAO.Wholesale rice prices in Cambodia continued to decline in May 2014 for the second consecutive month due to increased supplies from 2013-14 harvests and reduced export activities. Rice prices in Indonesia also declined for the second consecutive month due to the ongoing 2014 main season crop harvest. Rice prices in Bangladesh declined slightly in May with the beginning of the 2014 Boro harvest. Prices in Thailand continued to decline for the third consecutive month due to continued sales of government stocks and abundant new supplies from the ongoing 2013-14 secondary season harvest. Prices in Sri Lanka declined in May due to the ongoing Maha harvest.Retail prices of Japonica rice in China increased slightly due to a general food inflation in the country despite adequate supplies from imports in the past months and favorable prospects for the 2014 harvests. Prices in India increased slightly following recent increases in fuel costs. Vietnam prices increased in May, after moderate declines in the last four months during the 2013/14 winter-spring harvest, due to renewed export demand, particularly from China and the Philippines. Retail prices in the Philippines continued their uptrend due to reduced imports in earlier months. High fuel prices and delayed shipments from Vietnam are also contributing to the price rise. ' Prices in Myanmar remained relatively stable due to ample supplies from the ongoing 2013-14 secondary season harvest.Rice export prices in Vietnam, India, Pakistan and Uruguay increased in May 2014, according to the FAO. However, Thai rice export prices continued to fall due to increased rice sales by the Thailand government. Tags: India rice prices, Vietnam rice prices, Thailand rice prices, pakistan rice prices
