Says ex-VP not qualified to have stood for Feb 23 poll Urges tribunal to void 11.1m votes recorded in favour of Atiku, PDP
Andrew Orolua, Abuja The ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) and winner of the February 23, 2019 Presidential Election, has told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in that poll, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is not a Nigerian and therefore not qualified to have stood for the election. The party claimed that the former Vice President is a Cameroonian and not a Nigerian citizen and his petition against President Muhammadu Buhari, its own candidate, should be dismissed for lacking in merit. In a reply to the petition filed by Atiku and the PDP in which the petitioners are seeking for declaration as the lawful winner of the presidential poll, the APC said that the 11.1 million votes recorded in favour of the two petitioners should be voided
as wasted vote by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. The APC’s reply to the petition, filed by its lead counsel, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), faulted the candidacy of Atiku in the election, insisting that as a Cameroonian, he ought not to have taken part in the presidential poll of Nigeria in the first instance. The party averred that Atiku was born on November 25, 1946 in Jada, Adamawa, in Northern Cameroon and is therefore a citizen of Cameroon and not a Nigerian by birth. Going down memory lane, APC claimed that prior to 1919, Cameroon was being administered by Germany and that following the defeat of Germany in World War 1, which end in 1918, Cameroon became part of a League of Nations mandate territory which consisted of French Cameroon and British Cameroon in 1919. Atiku is not a Nigerian...
Continued from page 1
APC further argued that in 1961, a plebiscite was held in British Cameroon to determine whether the people preferred to stay in Cameroon or align with Nigeria. According to the party, while Northern Cameroon preferred a union with Nigeria, the Southern Cameroon chose alignment with the mother country and that it was as a result of the plebiscite that Northern Cameroon, which included Adamawa, became a part of Nigeria. APC therefore said that contrary to the assertion of Atiku in his petition, he (Atiku) had no right to be voted for as a candidate in the election to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria held on February 23, 2019. The party averred that by reason of Atiku not having qualified to contest the election, all votes purportedly cast for him and the PDP in the February 23 election are wasted votes. Besides, the issue of the origin of Atiku Abubakar, the APC asserted that most of the claims contained in Atiku’s petition have become statute barred and that the Tribunal is not the appropriate forum to entertain same. Specially, the APC said that the issue of educational
qualification of the Presidentelect, Muhammadu Buhari, raised by Atiku cannot be treated by the Tribunal because the period for claims and objections on such issues has expired and that the petitioners failed and neglected to use the appropriate period to challenge the validity of the educational qualification of Buhari as contained in the form CF001, submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the General Election. According to the APC, since the petitioners have waived their right to challenge the propriety of information contained in the form CF001 of President Buhari, their petition no longer disclose any reasonable cause of action. APC also faulted the allegations of non-compliance with relevant laws made by Atiku and PDP, adding that their failure to make specific references to the compliance issue has fatal effect on the petition and therefore the petition did not have enough material to justify the ground of any relief sought. Atiku had in his petition with reference number: CA/ PEPC/002/2019 faulted the conduct of the February 23 Presidential Election on ground of non-compliance with relevance electoral laws and other malpractices
such as intimidation of voters, unlawful arrest of his sympathisers and the harassment by soldiers and other law enforcement of those wishing to vote for him. The former Vice President and PDP claimed to have scored the majority of the lawful votes in the election and prayed the tribunal to declare them as winners of the election. In the alternative, the PDP candidate prayed for an order cancelling the election and another order directing the INEC to conduct a fresh one that will conform to relevant laws. But the APC in the reply argued that failure of Atiku to join the Nigerian Army, Police and other security agencies who were alleged to have performed the harassment and intimidation as defendants in the petition to establish his claim is fatal to the petition. They urged the court to strike out the claims. The party therefore prayed the tribunal to uphold the victory of its candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, who polled 15,191,347 to emerge winner and his subsequent declaration as president-elect by INEC while also urging that the petition against the victory should be dismissed for having no cause of action. No date has been fixed for hearing of the petition.

Court gives Saraki, Dogara, 52 others 5 days to defend defection Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, gave Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and 52 other lawmakers until April 17 to file their responses to a suit seeking to vacate their seats. An advocacy group, Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) dragged the lawmakers to court seeking a declaration that they were no longer members of the National Assembly having defected to other political parties before the expiration of their tenure. The defendants comprise 17 Senators, 37 members of the House of Representatives, the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the clerks to both houses. When the matter was called, Mr. Efut Okoi announced appearance for the Senate and the senators while Safiya Mohammed announced appearance for the members of the House of Representatives. Both counsel urged the court to entertain their applications, noting that a
litigant’s choice of counsel was his fundamental right. Mr. Jubrin Okutepa, (SAN), who announced appearance for LEDAP, said that the defendants were attempting to confuse the court by changing counsel. He noted that at Thursday’s proceedings, Mr. Mahmud Magaji, SAN, announced appearance for all the defendants and wondered why that had changed. He urged the court to ask Magaji to move the applications he had earlier filed and strike out any other applications before the court with regards to the suit. Magaji, in one of his applications, challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter on the grounds that the plaintiff had no “locus standi” to file the suit. The trial judge, Justice Okon Abang, however, held that it was in the interest of justice to hear all counsels in the matter. He ruled that the plaintiff, (LEDAP), was at liberty to reply to all the processes filed by the defendants on or before April 15 and ordered the defendants to file their reply by April 17. He said that any party that failed to abide by the court‘s directive would have itself to
blame. The judge adjourned the matter until April 18. The court on Thursday, suspended delivering judgment the suit, even though the judge said it was ready, in order to give the defendants an opportunity to file their processes so as to give all parties in the suit fair hearing. LEDAP, in their suit filed on September 14, 2018, prayed the court for an interpretation of Section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution. This was with regards as to whether any member of the National Assembly who resigns from the political party that sponsored his election before the expiration of the term for which he was elected, automatically loses his seat in the assembly. The group was also seeking a declaration that the lawmakers were no longer entitled to receive any remunerations due to a member of the National Assembly and that any of such remunerations after their date of defection be refunded to the Federal Government. LEDAP in the suit, also prayed the presiding members of the National Assembly to declare vacant, the seats of the defectors.

Patience Jonathan: Court ICPC boss accuses NASS members of compromise, corruption during oversight duties hears oral evidence in $8.4m forfeiture suit
Tunde Opalana, Abuja Lawmakers in the nation’s legislative arm of government have been accused of lacking the will to carry out their constitutional oversight roles on the activities of the executive arm because of compromise and corrupt practices. The chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, who made this allegation, said that members of the National Assembly usually compromise their major constitutional functions of oversight and investigation. He said as a result of the compromise, which comes through commercialisation of their activities, the lawmakers lack the will to carry out their constitutional roles. Prof. Owasanoye spoke while delivering a paper titled ‘The Role of the Legislature in the War Against Corruption and Graft’ on the last day of the induction course for the second batch of elected members of the coming 9th Assembly. “We should avoid a situation where because people are being investigated, they come to say they want to change the laws to forestall that. I want to urge the lawmakers not to support that. “Oversight function has been
Owasanoye commercialised, which is why the mechanism hasn’t been effective. Legislature is accused of passing the costs to MDAs and of accepting other forms of gratification, eg foreign trips, phony seminars, etc, to look the other way. “The Legislature has powers of investigation: this was very well utilised in the past. But many other times, the power is commercialised. You find out that the investigators become compromised in the process. There’s lacuna on what the legislature should do with the findings,” he said. The ICPC chairman also challenged the lawmakers to make the details of
their budget public. “Since 1999, the Nigerian Legislature has never shown any seriousness in scrutinising the reports of the auditor general. NASS Budget rose from N6.9bn in 1999 to N139bn in 2018. “There’s no country in the world where the legislature budget is up to one percent. But the question is there’s no breakdown for the amount. It is opaque and disproportionate. If you make the details, it may even lead to the need for more funds. Why would the legislature demand the details of agencies’ budgets without making its own open?”
Nigerian woman killed in Saudi Arabia was a drug smuggler- FG The Federal Government on Friday said that drugs were hidden in the body of Kudirat Afolabi, the Nigerian woman whose execution by the Saudi Arabia government on April 1 had generated national outcry. According to the government, Afolabi was among the 20 persons arrested with drugs hidden in their body parts. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Relations and the Diaspora, Mrs. Abike DabiriErewa, who disclosed this on Friday to newsmen in Lagos, said the clarification became necessary in a bid to clear the air regarding the circumstances leading to the execution of the Nigerian. Our correspondent reports that Afolabi was executed alongside two Pakistani men and one Yemeni man. Their execution brings the total number of people killed by Saudi Arabia this year to 53. Before the Federal Government’s
explanation, there had been attempts, especially in the social media, to link Afolabi’s fate with the activities of alleged syndicates that specialises in planting drugs in the baggage of unsuspecting travelers at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. However, Abike-Dabiri, said Afolabi did not belong to the list of seven who are suspected to have fallen victim of the four-man hard drugs planting syndicate, declaring that “there are some people caught in Kano, but those they allegedly gave the drugs to are yet to face trial in Saudi Arabia. “What we can now do is to prevail on the Saudi authority that those people awaiting trial in their country are among the victims of the Kano syndicate. If Nigeria can do this, through the National Drugs and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia, they might not even be charged to court.
“But, Ms. Afolabi was one of those drugs were found on their bodies. They were 20 in number. They are the ones on the death row, as drugs were found in their bodies, including their private parts. In their case, the Saudis do not appear to waste so much time on them. What is on social media that the lady could have been saved was incorrect. “There was no way we could have done that. She was found with drugs on her body; just like the other 20.” The presidential aide however, pointed out that in the case of those awaiting trial, the NDLEA can work with the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia to save them, adding that “who knows, maybe if the NDLEA forwards their information to the Saudis that some of these people might be innocent of the crime, they might not even go on trial. “But, we must continue to move fast and in harmony, so that we ensure the innocents are not unjustly punished.”

Wednesday withdrew his plea of not guilty and admitted tricking Rijiya. Rijiya had on September 26, 2018 petitioned the Maiduguri office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) when it became clear that Audu had collected the sum from him under pretence as Audu could not provide him with foodstuff he paid for. In the course of investigations, EFCC recovered the sum of N12, 300,000 from
Audu and released to Rijiya on bond. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Maiduguri Zonal Office secured the conviction of Audu following one count charge against the defendant for obtaining the sum of N15 million under false pretence. Upon his arraignment on March 25, 2019 before Justice Fadawu Umar of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, the defendant challenged the jurisdiction of the court. The trial judge, thereafter, ordered the remand of the defendant in prison,
and adjourned to April 9, 2019 for determination of the application. However, at the resumed sitting, when the court was to rule on the application, Audu, changed his earlier plea of “guilty” to a one-count charge of cheating preferred against him, following a plea bargain with the prosecution. Justice Umar, subsequently convicted him and sentenced him to one year in prison, with an option of N1 million as fine. He was committed to prison pending the payment of the fine.
A Federal High Court Lagos, on Friday, took oral evidences in a suit seeking final forfeiture of about 8.4 million dollars, and N7.4 billion found in accounts linked to a former first Lady, Patience Jonathan. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had secured an interim order for forfeiture of the sums on April 20, 2018, before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, following a motion exparte it filed. Joined as respondents in the suit are: Patience Jonathan, Globus Integrated Services Ltd, Finchley Top Homes Ltd, Am-Pm Global Network Ltd, Pagmat Oil and Gas Ltd and Magel Resort Ltd and Esther Oba. On October 29, 2018, EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, had moved his motion for final forfeiture of the sums, urging that same be finally forfeited to the Federal Government. Meanwhile, defence counsel, Messrs Ifedayo Adedipe, SAN, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, and Mr. Ige Asemudara had respectively moved their processes in opposition to the motion for final forfeiture. On January 15, the court had admitted electronic evidences presented by respondent counsel, which depicted video exhibits showing various business outfits of the third and sixth respondents. The court had then adjourned until February 28, for judgment. On February 28, the judge had first dismissed an application by counsel to the respondents, seeking to set aside the interim forfeiture orders made on April 20, 2018. Meanwhile, giving its ratio on the motion for final forfeiture, the court held that it finds the affidavit evidences conflicting, adding that same can only be resolved if the parties concerned are called upon to give oral evidences. When trial resumed on Friday, EFCC counsel (Oyedepo) called a witness, Mr. Chukwuma Orji, who deposed to some of the affidavits, and he made adoptions before the court. Referring to his role in the course of investigation into the case, Orji told the court that he was Head of EFCC task force in Lagos, and named some of his team members as Ogare Ogbore, Idris Adamu. Abdullahi Tukur, Shehu, among others. He said that he came across the account of Global Integrated Services Ltd, A. M P. M Global Network, Pagmat Oil and Gas Ltd, and Margel Resort Ltd, adding that he also came across an account name captured as Patience J. Orji also adopted an affidavit deposed to by one of the team members, (Ogare Ogbore), and an objection by defence counsel was overruled by the court. The witness confirmed sums of money lodged into a First Bank account, and also confirmed that the first respondent was a public officer, who worked with the Bayelsa State government, adding that he annexed documents to exhibit same. He confirmed that the monies sought to be forfeited by the EFCC, are in dollars, whereas, the receipts of sale of proceeds were in Naira. According to him, the money being transferred by Bola Shagaya were in dollars and converted to Naira, which emanated from Aso rock, adding that same was from unlawful activities of first respondent. Under cross examination by first defence counsel (Adedipe), the witness reiterated that he was part of the team of investigators in the case.
When asked if he was aware that the first respondent was Nigeria’s First Lady under President Goodluck Jonathan, he replied Yes. On whether he was aware that the former First Lady had a pet programme known as Women for Change at the time, the witness replied that his investigations revealed that the programme was used to receive and conceal proceeds of crime. On if that was the provision of the programme’s constitution, the witness replied that while the constitution says something different, its purpose was different. When asked if the government of Bayelsa and Edo had complained to the commission, that the funds volunteered to the Women for Change was by force, the witness replied “I didn’t investigate to know if it was paid by force”. On whether he knew if Bola Shagaya was a friend to the former First Lady, the witness replied that he only discovered from investigations that they were coconspirators. “Have they been charged to court,” Witness replied “It is not my duty”. Adedipe then said: “I suggest to you that you are not a witness of the truth,” and the witness replied “You are wrong.” On whether the commission received any complaints from the Aso Villa about missing funds, he replied that he would not know as that was beyond his level, adding that he had seniors. When asked if all the donors to the Women for Change Initiative ever complained of missing funds, the witness replied that he was not aware. On whether he received any foreign intelligence against the respondent, he said “I don’t know” and when asked if the first respondent was ever interviewed at any time, he said No. Under cross examination by counsel to the third to sixth respondent, (Ozekhome) the witness confirmed that he is aware that deposing to an affidavit is a solemn oath. “I take it that you are not Ogare Ogbore whose affidavit you also adopted,” the witness replied No. When asked if the said Ogare Ogbore is sick or bedridden, the witness replied that he was not a doctor to know that and when asked if the person was dead or alive, he replied she is alive. On whether he had stated that he was a team leader in his affidavit, the witness replied that a team leader can aslo be one of the operatives. On whether in a statement obtained from Waripamo Owei-Dudafa, an exaide to former President Goodluck Jonathan or any other person, they had said they paid money into the account of third to sixth respondent, the witness replied “No, to the best of my knowledge,” When asked if it is his grouse that monies were moved into the account of the women for change, the witness replied that the concept was used to conceal proceeds of crime. On whether he had interviewed any official of the third to sixth respondent to know why funds were paid to them by the NGO, the witness replied No, adding that the account did not lead to any of those officials. The witness also told the court that he did not visit any of the companies in the course of investigation because it was not necessary. When asked if he was aware that Bola Shagaya wrote a letter to the EFCC and if he saw it, the witness replied that he was not aware of the document. Hearing will continue on May 9 and May 13.

Rep. Onyejeocha as speaker
The forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Public Relations Officers in the North-East, says it supports the South-East’s quest to shift the leadership of the House of Representatives to the zone. Coordinator of the forum, Mr. Aaron Artimas, disclosed this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja. Artimas said the forum was therefore, supporting the endorsement of Rep. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha as speaker of the 9th House of Representatives by the South-East APC public relations officers. He said that Rep. Onyejeocha, a four-time member of the House of Representatives, represents many shades of national opinion, especially gender issues, insisting that with her rich political background and an effective legislator, she was eminently qualified to represent the South-East and to serve the country. However, Artimas said that while the policy remains a political decision, the forum believes that the ultimate decision to this effect remains a function of members of the National Assembly. “As party officials, we are not opposed to the presumptive position taken by the national leadership of our party, but we strongly believe that no decision is exhaustive or final, “he said.
HIV/AIDS: FG to remove impediments on access to treatment Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja In its bid to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country, the federal government on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to remove all impediments to access to HIV and AIDS interventions aimed at halting the spread of infection in Nigeria. Justice P.I. Ajoku of a Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Friday, struck out a suit filed the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, against the All Progressives Congress (APC) for excluding his name from the list of gubernatorial aspirants in the March 9 General Election over his inability to present his NYSC certificate. Shittu, who was screened out of the APC governorship primaries in Oyo State for not having the mandatory NYSC certificate, filed the suit marked FHC/IB/CS/111/2018. In her ruling, Ajoku said that the case was struck out the due to the fact that Shittu did not file the case within the time stipulated by law, declaring that “I must first consider the provision of Section 285 of the constitution that makes it mandatory for all pre-election matters to be filed within 14 days of occurrence. “This particular case was not filed within 14 days, but outside the date. Therefore, I will not bother going into the merit of the case. Haven’t failed to satisfy the dictates of the constitution, the matter is hereby, struck out,” the judge ruled. The #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) movement on Friday in Lagos renewed its call for the federal government to launch a national missing persons’ data base. Umahi suspends auditor-general, others over communal crisis
Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi state on Friday suspended the state AuditorGeneral, Mr. Innocent Nwida from office over the latest communal crisis rocking the state. The governor also suspended other elected and appointed office holders from Igbeagu Community in the Izzi Local Government Area of the state because of the crisis. It would be recalled that on April 9, Umahi had suspended the chairmen of Ikwo and Abakaliki Local Government Councils and all elected and appointed office holders from Enyibichiri in Ikwo and Enyigba in Abakaliki over a communal clash. Commissioner for Border, Peace and Internal Security, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, announced the suspension of the officials while addressing newsmen after the governor’s meeting with people from Igbeagu community involved in a boundary dispute with Ukele community in Cross River state. Ugbala noted that the suspension which took immediate effect would elapse when
peace returned to the communities. “The affected persons, include the Auditor-General of the state, Innocent Nwida; Project Coordinator of the FADAMA 3 programme, Mr. Cletus Nwakpu and a traditional ruler, Ogbonnaya Ukwa, among other political office holders. “The issue of whether the governor has the constitutional right to suspend the elected officers does not arise because they are constitutionally mandated to protect the lives and property of their people. “However, when an elected officer fails to perform this function, he has violated the constitution and should either resign, be suspended or charged to court. The courts would interpret such issues further and we are expecting such situations with this decision taken,” Ugbala said. The commissioner berated the National Boundary Commission (NBC) for its inability to permanently resolve boundary disputes in the state, including others in several parts of the state.
“We sometimes doubt the sincerity of the federal government in settling such crisis and view the NBC as a toothless bulldog. It has made several visits to the disputed areas even before the inception of the present administration but no decision has been made. “It is not our duty to demarcate the boundaries and the state government has attended all meetings convened by the NBC, being always disposed to peace. We urge the commission to live up to its responsibilities because no land is worth the lives of the citizens. “The commission only makes ‘urban carol’ visits to the areas whenever there are clashes and we urge the media to mandate it to perform its duties,” he stated, adding that the governor would visit the affected areas today to assess the extent of damage and find a permanent solution to the crisis. “Stakeholders from the areas are enjoined to enlighten their people on ways of ensuring peace as the government will also look into issues concerning internally displaced persons,” he said.

N450m alleged fraud: i’m innocent Short News Group condemns unabated killings Belgore says in northern states Peter Fowoyo, Lagos
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Dele Belgore, on Friday told a Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos that he was innocent of the N450 million fraud charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Belgore and a former Minister of Planning, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman are currently standing trial before the court on a 9-count charge over alleged N450 million fraud. He said the anti graft agency knew those who committed the offence pressed against him, but freed them, and filed charge against him who did not benefit from the N450 million largesse. At yesterday’s proceedings, Belgore who was the campaign coordinator of the reelection bid of former President Goodluck Jonathan in Kwara State concluded his testimony in defence of the allegation. Led in evidence by his lawyer, Ebun
Shofunde (SAN), the defendant denied all the 9 -count charge bordering on the alleged offence pressed against him by the commission. Belgore told the court that in his statement he made at EFCC, he gave detailed information to the commission about who took possession, disbursed and used the N450 million which was the subject of the charge against him but the commission failed to pursue the culprits. According to him, while he was being investigated by the EFCC on the alleged offence, he gave account of the role he played and neither did he admitted orally to have committed the offence nor did he made any statement to admit that he was guilty of the offence. “I denied all the 9 court charge against me, I have never made any payment to all the names mentioned in the charge, in order to assist the investigators, I gave them detail information on who took possession of the fund how it was disbursed and used, I didn’t
benefits from the funds”, he told the court. Belgore had earlier told the court that the N450 million which was set aside as campaign fund for the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 was from series of fund raising activities done by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He also denied claims that the money was from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke. Belgore said throughout his tenure as the campaign coordinator of the reelection bid of former President Goodluck Jonathan in Kwara state, he had no dealings with Mrs. Diezani and that he was not aware that the N450 million he signed for in 2015 came from her. He added that claims by two EFCC investigators that the money was part of the N23 billion allegedly collected by Mrs. Diezani from three oil marketers; Northern Belt Ltd, Actus Integrated Ltd, Midwestern Company and one, Mr. Leno Laitan, ahead of the 2015 general elections, were untrue.
Mathew Dadiya, Abuja Berom Youth Moulders-association (BYM), a sociocultural group and umbrella body of the Berom Youths has condemned the continuous killings in zamfara State and other parts of Nigeria. Court grants Ex- SMEDAN DG N30m bail Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday admitted to bail former Director General of Small and Medium Enterprise and Development Agency (SMEDAN), Bature Umar Masari in the sum of N30 million and one surety in like sum. The surety must however be an owner of landed property in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and he must be a residence of the territory while the said property would be verified as condition for perfecting the bail. The ex-SMEDAN boss was on Wednesday this week, arraigned by the EFCC on a 17count charge of alleged money laundering. This followed Masari alleged involvement in N107.7million money laundering scam which the anti graft agency said he illegally earned from proceeds of gratification. When the charge was read to Masari, he pleaded not guilty while his lawyer, Mahmud. Magaji (SAN), urged the court to admit his client to bail.
Justice Okon Abang in his ruling on the oral bail application moved by Magaji (SAN), held that the offences upon which the defendant was charged before the court are bailable offences., Justice Abang noted that the granting of bail to a defendant is at the discretion of court, therefore he relied on the provisions of sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution and sections 162 and 163 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 in admitting the defendant to bail. The judge who upheld the argument of the defence counsel also noted that the paramount thing to consider in granting bail is to ensure that the defendant will continue to attend court to stand his trial. “It is in the light of these that I am inclined to grant the application for bail. The defendant is hereby admitted to bail in the sum of N30 million with one surety in the like sum.” Justice Abang however ruled that the defendant must provide a surety. “The surety must be a residence in Abuja and owner of a landed property within the FCT with a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) which must
be verified by the relevant agencies. “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in company of a police officer should confirm the residence of the surety.” The court further ordered that the surety must deposed to an affidavit of means and undertake to forfeit the bail bond. On the part of the defendant, Justice Abang ordered that he must deposit his International passport with the registrar of the court or a letter from the Nigerian Immigration Service, if he does not have an International passport. On Wednesday when the arraignment took place, counsel to the defenfant, Magaji, by way of oral application, argued that his client is entitled to bail and urged the court to grant him temporary freedom. However, the prosecution counsel, Ekele Ihenacho, opposed the oral application by the senior advocate. According to the prosecution counsel, there is the need for the senior advocate to place material facts on behalf of his client before the court, saying that the development will enable the judge to have an informed opinion on the matter.

He added that so far, 69,568 candidates had registered for the 2019 NECO examinations into unity schools while insisting that the ministry hope to meet the target of 80,000 applicants. “Regrettable as it were, the postponement has become necessary due to request from over seven states of the Federation who have asked for an extension of time to enable them to enrol more candidates. “Some of the states have less than 200 applicants enrolled for the examination and as such may not be able to fill their quota if not given the opportunity to enrol more candidates. “Records available to me from NECO indicate that only 69,568 candidates had registered to sit for the examination, hence, the need for an extension of time for more registration,’’ he said. Adamu said that the website for the registration would be closed on April 25. He added that this would enable candidates register on the day of the examination, provided they have made payment and obtained their PIN on or before closing date.

Marriage breakups happen in all field not just in Nollywood - Uche Ogbodo Light skinned actress, Uche Ogbodo is no new name in the movie industry as she has carved a niche already for herself in the creative industry via her distinctive role interpretation, and carriage amongst others. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, Uche spoke about life as a single mother, and touching story of her past amongst others. Enjoy…
What have been the challenges of been single mother? It has been tough. I never believe I would be a single mother in my life, but I’m a Catholic girl. We preach against abortion and all. Then, when you have a covenant with God that you are going to be a mother and a good wife, that I don’t ever want to break up with my husband when I get married, but things changed. I thought about marrying the father of my child, but the relationship didn’t work. It is unfortunate. This child came as a blessing; maybe God wants me to have this child to teach me a lesson. My parents told me that I am not married and that I should move on with my life, but I was like I think there’s a reason for this child growing in me. I didn’t get pregnant while in other relationships, so why this one? Why now? There’s a reason for this child and I’m keeping her. That’s why I kept her. It hasn’t been easy. What’s next for you, any plans for marriage? I am still positive. I still want to get married. I’m a Catholic girl. I want to be in a relationship where I would be happy, where I would be allowed to live the way I want to. I want to be happy. So, if you want to make me happy, then come on. So there’s no one in your life at the moment? There is actually. But just relationship. We haven’t defined it yet. What led to your decision to work on your body size, criticism?
No, not really. I don’t care about body shammers actually. It’s one of the things that happened in my life year’s back that made take on this step to make myself a better and happier person. I recently had a baby; my baby is 4 years old. Before the baby, I had issues with my Ex. These are life changing events, happening at same time. So, I told myself, that if i want to do what I want to do, I have to lose some weight. Baby weight and all. I had to reorient myself. Bottom line, I am happy. Did you at any point give up? No, I never. The minute I went to the gym, I knew the result I was looking out for. I didn’t think back. Each time I look in the mirror, I see a more beautiful version of myself. I’m happy, I never gave up. I started a movement Body Positive with Uche Ogbodo which is to inspire women to work on themselves. I notice that some women go through a lot and seeing the changes in their bodies, sometimes get them depressed that even contemplate suicide. So, I know they need a push to look better and become happier; I became that push for women. Nobody gave me that push before I hit the gym, but I want to inspire other women to find themselves, that’s how I want to give back to the society. I want to help women see how beautiful they are. Nobody is ugly. About your ex what actually happened? There are parts of life I don’t want go back to because whatever happened in my other life happened for the best. God has a reason for it to happen. I’m happy, that’s all that matters.
Uche Ogbodo
So you don’t think you made a mistake? I am happy, it didn’t work. I’m not an advocate for people staying in a relationship that you not happy in. If you are not happy go away. It is not a do or die affair. You don’t have to die in marriage. If it is no longer convenient for you, walk away. Don’t care what people are going to say, just move on. It’s your life. There are other means of happiness lined up somewhere. So, common move it girl! But you believed in him before you married him? No. I didn’t marry him. I have never been married but the media took me as a married woman. I was never married. I was in a relationship with someone and it lasted about a year and we broke up. We were
engaged to be married. But the minute we said that, everything just dissolved. So, when he left the picture, about a month after, I found out that I was pregnant. I didn’t want to tell anybody about it, I just wanted to think about my life. Should I go back to him because of this pregnancy? Or should I just move on? It me took about 9 months to realise that I don’t want that kind of man in my life. He would drag me back. How involved is he with his daughter now? Well, he hasn’t been involved because initial he said ‘this girl is not pregnant, she wants to get me’. Until, I went to America to have my baby. He wasn’t interested. I wasn’t interested on saying anything to him. Over the years, I’ve been able to take
care of my child alone. I don’t mind. It’s been great. What would you say is the major reason Nollywood actresses barely last long in marriages and even relationships? I don’t think relationship is hard for any Nollywood person to take. I want to believe that we are blessed people. Nollywood exposes you to better opportunity and takes you to greater heights. It gives you exposure that being a businessman or banker won’t give you, so whatever you do, all eyes are on you. And sometimes you are entangled with people that understand you or your job; they expect you to be a super woman. You meet people who don’t compliment you. It happens everywhere though, not just the Entertainers.

Fuji Music icon, K1 gives back Isaac Oguntoye In what looks like a divine arrangement, Fuji music legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Mashal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, has thrown his weight behind Oluwatobi Ilelolawa, the 12-year-old Primary Six pupil, who sketched President Muhammadu Buhari’s image with pen without alteration few days ago. Soon after a national daily published the story of the boy, K1, through his publicist, Kunle Rasheed, reached out to the writer. K1 said he was touched by the story of the boy and offered to sponsor his postprimary education to the university level. The music legend described the boy as a raw talent that must be guided, supported and not allowed to waste. “I was touched when the story was brought to my notice and I see it as one of those things one can do to impact the society. Education is key to success and who knows the boy we are talking about may be a governor or President in the making. He may become another Ben Enwonwu, Bruce Onobrakepya, Wole Soyinka or an international Artist of repute in the future. If the society fails to give him the needed support now, posterity will not forgive us. This is the time to lift a hand and groom a talent for posterity.” Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to introduce the promising artist to his new benefactor and perfect ways through which his mentorship and sponsorship would be handled.

Gastab Oil boss, Omogbolahan Adigun, hails Comrade Olawale’s appointment as Lagos PTD scribe
Kemi Nelson
Kemi Nelson resurfaces For sometimes now little or nothing has been heard about the society cum APC woman leader, Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson until recently when she was rumoured to have been lobbying for position after the general election. Meanwhile, contrary to a news report trending on the social media, the South West Zonal Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson has denied lobbying for a position in the government of the incoming Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu. The report is entitled; “2019: SanwoOlu in Trouble As Ex-Tinubu, Fashola’s Aides Lobby For Appointments.” It was alleged in the report that, Kemi Nelson, a former Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Job Creation and later for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation during the administration of former Governor Bola Tinubu, was spotted at Sanwo-Olu’s Ikoyi office, and that the visit “might not be unconnected with a position in the incoming administration.” However, a source close to Mrs. Kemi Nelson revealed that there was no iota of truth in the report and urged members of the public to disregard the allegation. The source stated that Kemi Nelson is currently an Executive Director of a federal parastatal, a ranking member of the APC, a NEC member of the party, and a member of the Governors’ Advisory council in Lagos State, which is the highest decision making body in the government of the state. According to the source, the report, especially where the name of Kemi Nelson was mentioned, was a figment
of the imagination of the writer. “it is common these days for people to write reports and imagine that certain things must have happened and feed members of the public with half truth and even blatant lies. “It is surprising that people could insinuate that someone of the caliber of Kemi Nelson would lobby the incoming government for appointment,” said the source, adding that the report is very laughable. The source stressed that Kemi Nelson is an accomplished politician,
who has continued to soar higher in her duty of serving her state and fatherland to the best of her ability. On why Kemi Nelson’s name was included in such a report, the source said that it was the handiwork of some “mischief makers, who are envious of the humble and enviable achievements of Mrs. Kemi Nelson over the years,” adding that the report would not deter the “revered politician” from contributing her quota to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

Aliko Dangote’s conviction
Kemi Nelson
Aliko Dangote does not need introduction especially in the business terrain. But what many people don’t know about the business tycoon is that the African richest man is only rich on paper. Most times according to the prime mover of Dangote Group, he had to convince himself that he was indeed rich. Recently, the Africa’s richest man, said he withdrew $10 million just to look at it and convince himself that he is rich. Speaking at the Mo Ibrahim governance weekend ongoing in Abidjan, Dangote said he knew he was rich on paper but had to convince himself that he was rich. To do this, the multi-billionaire said he drove to a bank, withdrew $10 million, took it home, put it on his bed, looked at it, and returned it back to the bank the following day. “The way it is that when you first start business, your target is to make your first
million. Fine, I did that,” Dangote told Mo Ibrahim. “After a year or so, I realised that I had much more, and I said OK, fine, all these numbers are just written numbers. “One day I went to a bank, and at that time, there were no restrictions, and I wrote a cheque and cashed $10m from the bank and put it in the boot of my vehicle, and I went home and I opened it and I looked at $10m and I said ‘now I believe I have money’.” Dangote added that he took it back to the bank the next day — after his mission was concluded. The Nigerian businessman has been the richest man in Africa for nearly a decade, following the expansion of his cement business, and the change of model to focus on local manufacturing. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote is the 74th richest man in the world as of April 6, and he is valued at $16.4billion.

World Bank to invest $15b in African human capital projects Motolani Oseni The World Bank has said it will invest $15 billion into human capital projects in Africa by the year 2023. World Bank Vice President for Africa, Hafez Ghanem, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, stating that the projects are part of World
Bank’s new plan to help promote skills development for African youth and enhance their competitiveness in a digitalising global economy. Others are increasing learning
outcomes for girls and boys in school by 20 per cent by 2023. By doing so, it will increase African workers’ productivity by 13 per cent. “Preventing a child from fulfilling his or her potential is not only fundamentally unjust, but it also limits the growth of economies whose future workers are held back,” Ghanem said. “GDP per worker in Sub-Saharan
Africa could be 2.5 times higher if everyone were healthy and enjoyed a good education from pre-school to secondary school,” he added. NECA wants CBN, NIPOST to halt stamp duties charge Temitope Adebayo Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has called on the federal government to impress on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), to respect the valid judgment of the court and stop the deduction of stamp duties charge from the accounts of Nigerians who are bank customers. Director-general of NECA, Mr Timothy Olawale, stated that the “issue of imposing N50 stamp duty commenced when the CBN directed that banks must deduct N50 stamp duty on
all transactions made, with a value of N1,000 and above. “There is the need to respect the valid judgment of the court and stop the systematic deduction from millions of Nigerians who are bank customers in the name of deduction of stamp duties charges,” he said. Olawale said the issue of stamp duty was tested in courts and a ruling obtained in an appeal against the lower court’s judgment in the case of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd vs Kasmal International Services Ltd & 22 Ors in CA/L/437A/2014. He said, Justice Ibrahim Saulawa and four other Justices of the Court of Appeal
held that the Stamp Duties Act did not impose a duty on all money deposits in banks. He said according to the Appeal Court, “electronic transactions” were not covered by the Stamp Duties Act, and to the best of his knowledge, there was no challenge of the ruling by any party at the Supreme Court.” Olawale said the refusal of the CBN and NIPOST to obey the valid judgment of a competent court is worrisome and amount to contempt of court and a sustained daylight robbery of millions of bank customers. “It is a mark of disrespect to the Constitution of Nigeria, disrespect to the
court, and disrespect to due process. “NECA had written letters in 2015 and 2017 to the CBN governor, calling his attention to the anomaly and judgment of the court, which he neither responded to nor did the needful by halting the fraud and rip off”, he said. Olawale advised that NIPOST should stick to its roles and responsibilities of producing and selling postage stamps. He called on the CBN to respect the law and judgment of the Court of Appeal and instruct commercial banks, through a circular, to stop the deduction of N50 stamp duty on customers’ accounts and return several billions of naira illegally deducted from them to date.

Finally, NCC grants additional broadband spectrum to MTN Ladesope Ladelokun Following a lengthy regulatory battle between MTN Nigeria and the federal government of Nigeria, the telco has now been awarded additional broadband spectrum related to its 2015 acquisition of Visafone Communications. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved the transfer of 800-megahertz spectrum
following a public inquiry. The transfer of 800-megahertz spectrum is expected to boost MTN’s market-leading position in the country. MTN bought Visafone from Jim Ovia, the former CEO of Zenith Bank, four years ago. The decision will enable MTN to extend its network reach in Africa’s most populous country, potentially to rural and unconnected areas, according to Olusola Teniola, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).
The carrier — Africa’s biggest by sales — has 67-million active customers in the country, more than half of whom use data services. “MTN is a dominant player in the voice segment and obviously they would like to ensure that they hold a leadership position in the data space,” Teniola told Bloomberg by phone. “Any operator that has the kind of spectrum that MTN holds is in a good position to lead the market.” Getting the better of an NCC
ruling will come as a welcome boost to MTN, which has long been the subject of regulator and government censure in Nigeria. In 2015, the NCC fined the carrier more than $5bn for missing a deadline to disconnect subscribers without proper registrations, a crisis from which the share price has never recovered. The penalty was eventually settled for about $1bn plus a pledge to sell shares on the local stock market, which is slated for later in 2019.

Why machine learning is critical for development of accountants -ACCA report Motolani Oseni The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has said that machine learning is becoming more relevant for many organisations as the hype increasingly becomes reality The global chartered accountants association revealed this in the new research, where it stated that there are huge opportunities for better business intelligence and across a range of activities carried out by accountants. The ACCA stated that adoption of machine learning needs to be based on legitimate business need rather than just wanting to be seen as using AI, adding that ethical challenges lie ahead - accountants need to align professional competence and due care with AI and machine learning. According to the report, a third of accountants currently see AI as all or mostly hype, while nearly 60 per cent say that in three years’ time it will become a reality, according to global research amongst nearly 2,000 ACCA members in 111countries. The report’s author and head of business insights at ACCA, Narayanan Vaidyanathan, said: “Machine learning is a critical area of development for accountants. Looking ahead it will be crucial to understanding its value and benefits, as well as the ethical challenges it presents. In all this, the starting point has to be a legitimate business need with a clear understanding of what it can bring to the organisation.” He stated that AI and machine learning can add value to the work accountants do – from generating valuable insights for business decision-making, to fraud detection, risk assessment, understanding complexities in taxation and also with more effective non-financial reporting. So the accountancy profession needs to understand how AI and machine learning work, especially given its role in influencing the trust we have in the decisions of these systems. “As with any technology, with power, comes responsibility. In the case of machine learning, ethical considerations are never far away. Accountants need to consider and manage potential ethical compromise from decision-making by algorithm, such as the risk of bias in the data set that feeds them and the issue of accountability for decisions made.” The report emphasizes that at a minimum all finance professionals should know how AI is evolving and be alert to how the developing capabilities could overlap with their impact on their roles. To prepare for the digital future, ACCA already examines a range of digital topics within its Masters level ACCA Qualification. It has also enhanced the digital content across many of the exams for students, while also ensuring digital is weaved into members’ continuous professional development. Narayanan Vaidyanathan concludes: ‘Machine learning’s entrance into the accountancy mainstream is a huge opportunity, where professional accountants have the chance to develop a core understanding of emerging technologies, while continually building them interpretive, contextual and relationship-led skills. They can then truly benefit from the ability of technologies like machine learning to support them with intelligent analysis of vast amounts of data.’ ACCA is the global body for professional accountants, offering business-relevant and first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.

Nigerians have seen beyond APC and their deceit and have spoken against it - Olafeso Dr Eddy Olafeso is the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South West. He is happy with the inroads the PDP made into the South West in the recently concluded general election, and in this interview with PATRICK OKOHUE he spoke about the performance of his party at the elections and efforts made by him and others to make the party more attractive in the South West, just as he castigated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for meddling in the election of principal officers of the National Assembly among other issues. Justice Walter Onnoghen recently tendered his resignation letter as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), after he was suspended by the President, following his investigation by the Code of Conduct Bureau and commencement of trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, after being accused of not declaring his asset, which many see as a frame up, to deal with him, because they did not want him as CJN in the first place, what is your view of this? My view corroborates with yours, it is tragic that we no longer have a sane nation, we have a nation divided against itself, from the beginning of his appointment as Chief Justice, you could recollect, it was during the period the Vice President was acting that Justice Onnogen was eventually confirmed. It is like every appointment from President Buhari has to be from the North, otherwise it cannot stand nor work. It is a sad scenario, very unfortunate; it is all about the destruction and the plundering of the institutions that can actually make Nigeria a great nation. It is a continuation of our downward fall with the habit of chaos and senselessness, Onnoghen is just part of the very complicated situation Nigerians have been dealing with under this government, it is rather unfortunate that this kind of thing happened. What impression do you have about the general election that just held, viz a viz your party’s performance? We thank the Nigerian people and the voters for their commitment in ensuring that the PDP is not dead despite the prediction of Adams Oshiomhole and his party the APC, we rose to the challenge of defending our position with the electorate. We did everything to convince them that we are far better than the APC government. If you look at the destruction from 2015 and now, in 2015 we had less than 1.5 million people as internally displaced, now we have over five million people in IDP camp. We have over 20 million people displaced in North East, now the insurgency have moved from North East to four other zones of the country. The economy has actually been plundered, there is no hope for the common Nigerian, everything is upside down, that is exactly what the Nigerian people voted against. You can see that the number of states controlled by the PDP has increased, as at today it is16 states and we still hope to get more states. People
Eddy Olafeso
are voting the PDP to run away from the draconian administration of the APC, and the hopelessness in the environment in the last four years. It is not a surprise to me that we did very well, because it is obvious that the nation can no longer take another four years of the APC, the election was rigged, and we are at the tribunal over the presidential election, and we are very hopeful we will secure victory.
If you look at the election now, the reality of pattern of voting is coming out, you can see we have more states now, now democracy is really entrenching itself. The next step as I hope is the INEC. INEC did not prepare adequately for the completion of the complex assignment they had at hand. We should not blame INEC all
You can see that the number of states controlled by the PDP has increased, as at today it is16 states and we still hope to get more states. People are voting the PDP to run away from the draconian administration of the APC, and the hopelessness in the environment in the last four years. It is not a surprise to me that we did very well, because it is obvious that the nation can no longer take another four years of the APC
alone, the political class should share out of the scenario which INEC found itself, and that exactly is what we must watch out for in the next election. The desperation, the attitude of even APC government against INEC, that they wanted to command INEC like part of their department in the APC, the party is part of the reason we have this unfortunate scenario of some election not being concluded a month after the election, the governorship election took place on the 9th of March and election of Rivers State just completed some days ago, a month after. How do you justify that under a democracy? How come election period is now like a war, that people have to die, it is rather unfortunate we lost so many lives, in the process of electing people who want to rule over the people, they go through pain and mystery and poverty in the last three and a half years, now the position of the leaders have to be filled just to go through votes, it is really, really unfortunate. I think by the time we will be writing the story of 2019, we have so many things to write concerning the feeling of that moment, and we all have a blame to share, not only INEC, political class, political parties, even Nigerians, those that did not actually raise alarm, when they see things going wrong, or those that kept silent in the face of tyranny. We all have ourselves to blame. It is unfortunate that Nigeria is not going the way it should be going, we are not where we are supposed to be, we are not actually creating a foundation for a new beginning for our nation. Well, the way things are at the moment, nobody knows what will happen in the future. The insecurity is rising, no job, the economy is going down, down, we are rated as one of the poorest nations of the world and we have been tagged as poverty capital of the world, that shouldn’t be our portion, by virtue of the gift of God under and above the soil of this great nation called Nigeria, those are the questions we must begin to ask ourselves, where are we going from here? That is one of the reasons we insisted on restructuring Nigeria, maybe we can bring back the energy of the 60’s to bear upon our productive energy and lead Nigeria to the destiny of our growth. Despite the shenanigans your party still made an inroad into the South West, how do you feel about the development? I am excited; I am the National Vice Chairman of the party in the South West. I thank God, it is a reflection of the energy and hard
work we put on our job. We said it to all of you at the beginning that we are ready to work, and we are ready to take the pain that is associated with working hard, to convince the people that the government in power is bad for them, and the Tinubu dynasty has been punctured, it is ineffective and it is associated with corruption, and on the eve of the presidential election, the man drove two bullion vans into his premises in Bourdilion and nobody raised an eyebrow, DSS, EFCC all went to sleep, the police, the army, all the security operatives just turned a blind eye to it. We know that, their rule over the South West is over, because we will stop at nothing to ensure we route them out of here, the most sophisticated zone in terms of education advancement, and the economic nerve of the nation, and unless we take South West away from these people, there can’t be any meaningful development, we have done well. We have to thank the people of the geo political zone, they have done well, we need to thank the people of the geo political region, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo all those that committed themselves to the struggle, unfortunately in some of our states, we still need to work on some of our leaders to do better, to be united, so that in the nearest future we will be able to take the largest percent in the South West, hope is rising in the South West and the PDP is doing very, very well out here, and we need to put enough energy into ensuring we convince our people and give them the better hope for tomorrow. Initially, the national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole said the party did not need the support of PDP senators to elect the principal officers at the National Assembly, but report has it now that the party, APC has started soliciting the support of PDP Senators, and encouraging them to support Ahmed Lawan as the Senate President, what have you got to say about this? Adams Oshiomhole by virtue of his background, by virtue of his level of education is more a cancer to APC than somebody who will look for solution, he is very undemocratic, it is so unfortunate, if you see the irony of the life he had lived, as a former union leader, the man has no clue whatsoever about democratic process, he opens his mouth wide, and vituperated many times he wanted to, and he latter begins to regret all the utterances that he has made, I have never taken him serious,

Nigerians have seen beyond APC and their deceit ... was no support from government, my parents could not afford the kind of education I have today, so Adewale and co must be serious, this party will not tolerate that. Anyway, the police is already investigating him over creating chaos in our party, he is not a member of the PDP, nobody had any agreement with him whatsoever.
Continued from page 17 even the eight years he spent in Edo State, as the governor of the state was a complete disaster for his people, but because he is in the ruling party, they are still covering him up for all the corruption charges against him, he is a tragic personae in this country as far as democratic development is concerned. He is one of the worst mistakes ever made by APC. Even the APC, is that a political party, if APC were really a political party, how can Adams Oshiomhole be their national chairman, but their times are numbered, alongside with Adams Oshiomhole and his cronies. What business does the executive and the party leaders got to do with the National Assembly, the legislature is another arm of government, it is another arm of government that the executive have nothing to do with, and I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the National Assembly members to make sure that, they do the needful by selecting leaders that can actually serve the nation at this particular point in time. One thing I can assure you is that, Lawan or whatever his name is, is not a considered material for such a lofty position of the president of the Senate, if of all the agenda Lawan has is how to extend the tenure of the president, to elongate the tenure of the president. Of all the problems in the country, insecurity, the pain, Lawan’s consideration is how to extend Muhammadu Buhari’s lack luster almost four years of ruling, and I know he is going to be defeated at the tribunal, I have no business whatsoever because their time is numbered, Oshiomhole, Lawan, Buhari cannot hold the nation to ransom, we will free ourselves, this is a land of freedom and of great men that has fought to keep this nation together, and neither are we going to allow their labour to be in vein, by allowing this reckless characters to continue to dominate our public life. As the national vice chairman of the PDP South West, what are you doing about the crisis rocking the Lagos State chapter of the party, I mean the faceoff between your governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje and the party leaders, also the fight over who controls the state executive between Segun Adewale and Adegbola Dominic? Segun Adewale is not a member of our party, about the blame game between Agbaje and leaders of the party that is always a true tale of defeat, we are stepping into it, and we will make sure that everybody comes together, the party is bigger and more authoritative than any individual, we have called and caution everybody, I know for sure at long last we will sit at the table and resolve our differences. On Adewale issue, how can an individual, even if he is a raving mad man and in a democratic process where things are structured, just wake up one morning and say he is the state chairman of the party. He said he had agreement with leaders of the party. With who? He said with Adegoke Salvador and others. Where is Salvador now, there
Eddy Olafeso
was a congress that produced Salvador, when he left, the National Working Committee ( NWC) of the party, looked into the situation , and Dominic is currently the state chairman of the party, who did Adewale had agreement with, he is sick, and the person is equally sick, they are oblivious of what it takes to become the party chairman, and the party constitution is very clear, he is not a member of our party, as far as I am concerned he does not exist. Who does he relate with, if they zone the whole thing and the national working committee is not working with him? He should go and find something tangible to do with his life. What are you doing about the crisis raging in the party? There is no crisis, I spoke with the DPO, Ikeja he has been routed out of the office, Dominic is completely in charge, you cannot brew crisis where there is none, I am building this party, we have had enough, I am not building any crisis, that was why we
quickly ostracised him, if you read my press release, I made it abundantly clear that, this is not the era of Ali Modu Sheriff and co, where people just wake up early in the morning and make some pronouncements. Adewale is not a member of our party, how can you run in July 2018 as the governorship candidate of ADP in Ekiti State, and suddenly now say he has agreement with the party, with who? He must be insane and trying to wake up from his insanity. Nobody will tolerate such characters any more in our party, this not the era of thuggerry, it is the era of reasoning, we must be compassionate to understand that, the people behind it all they are suffering, there is so much pain and poverty in this land. I am worried because this is not how we grew up. People grew from poor background to the level we attained, because there was provision for education, provision for health, people fed well in school during Obafemi Awolowo era. How could I have a PhD if there
You see, when you are stealing the people’s mandate to just want to remain in power and you are not doing anything with the power, it is unreasonable , it is inhuman, God will punish them, God will punish all of them in APC punishing Nigerians, no light, no water , no housing, some people sleep on the road, we live in Lagos. Is this the way life should be lived, noooo.
The election tribunal that sat in Abuja recently declared Senator Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the Osun governorship poll held last year, just some days after that pronouncement by the tribunal a high court said he was not qualified to contest the governorship poll, are you surprised about the closeness of the rulings? That is the usual shenanigan of the APC and their desperation to hold on to power in Osun State and their failing to actually attain that, I am not surprised, a law court has already passed judgment on that, that he is entitled to contest. The constitution of our party says the man is competent to run, and he is a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. All their appeals are just to muddle up things for the appeal, just to find a way to shield and steal what do not belong to them. Look at what happened at the presidential election, they stole the presidential election, so they want to steal and remain in government. So, they are just trying to steal power, to remain in power and abuse proceedings and misrule cannot work, to be fair with you, it will not work. Your party has won the governorship election in Oyo State, what efforts are on ground to win more elections in the geo political zone? I congratulate the people of Oyo State for standing their ground against oppression and inversion, and eventually when the election held, you can see they (APC members) are not popular in Oyo State , I congratulate the elected governor of Oyo State for his outstanding brilliance and leadership in that election for bringing everybody together. Oyo will be a launch pad for our return to South West, we have returned in Ondo State, we won two senatorial seats, we won the presidential election massively, even when they did everything to cut down our lead. We are coming, we are telling the rest of the world that Ondo State is coming back into the PDP fold, alongside with Osun State, since Oyo and Ondo States are in the basket, it is just a matter of time to return to the South West, to re - enact the lost glory of the Awolowo era and time, believe me, it is doable, it is just reducing all the humongous stealing under APC. They claim that the PDP is corrupt, believe you me what the APC is doing right now is digital stealing, they have done nothing in the last three and the half years, and they are trying to explore their way through
another four years, that is what they are doing, they spent four years blaming the PDP, well the remaining four years, I don’t know who they will continue to blame, I don’t know may be they will continue blaming APC (themselves) for the first four years, they are irrational, they are insane, that is why I don’t listen to them in the social media and the news, I wonder why Nigerians still listen to that kind of insane utterances from people who don’t know exactly what they are trying to do. They have no principle or any ideological position that they are hinging governance in Nigeria on and that is the truth. I am passionate about what I am saying because, I know we can do better than what we are trying to do. PDP did better despite the fact that we were disconnected from the people. The reasons advanced why the PDP lost election in 2015 were given as arrogance on the part of PDP members, disconnection from the people and indiscipline on the part of party members, will you say your party has addressed these lapses? All what you said about us are correct, and we have addressed them, if we did not address them, we couldn’t have done better in the last general elections, we have eliminated this idea of victors sharing all the positions, and public office being for the highest bidder internal democracy have improved, things are done right in the open, we criticise ourselves, we have apologised to the Nigeria nation, we have called to order some of our leaders and some of them are even retired. Before God and man we made it abundantly clear to anybody who want to run that the wish of the people must prevail, that was the decision of NWC which I am a member, that is what we are doing exactly differently from the APC, you could see that all our primary processes were different from their own, they just sit in the office and write results , they just write names and submit and say those are their candidates, that was why many factions of APC submitted candidates’ names, and in the end none was accepted by INEC. I am not saying we don’t have our own problems, we had problems in Ogun and Lagos states, but I am sincere enough, and honest to know that those are problems and I have to resolve them, I have to bring everybody to the table to resolve them. Like I have been tough on Adewale of Lagos State, who decided to open his mouth wide and vomit insanity, that is what the party has to do, discipline, internal democracy, good leadership, commitment to goal and ensuring that when you go wrong you have to apologise. How many times have you seen APC apologising to Nigerians for insecurity, for lack of infrastructural development, for not ruling well, except abusing everybody and blaming everything on the PDP. For us, the future is very, very bright and we will get back our stolen presidential election, mark my words, by the time the presidential election litigation is declared in favour of Abubakar Atiku at the tribunal, court of Appeal and Supreme Court, you will come back and interview me. You will see that these people just sold dummy to the Nigerian people and finally the dummy will kill them.

SpaceX launches first commercial mission of Falcon Heavy A rocket, created by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, has made a giant leap. On its first commercial mission, the Falcon Heavy is taking cargo into orbit. More than 23 storeys in height, the Space X Falcon Heavy packs
twice as much power as any other rocket on the Earth. Its future missions will push military satellites into orbit and ferry passengers into space for a price cheaper than ever before roughly $90m a launch.

Sudan’s General Awad Ibn Auf said he was stepping down for the “benefit of our nation”
Sudan’s Ibn Auf steps down as head of military council The head of Sudan’s ruling military council has announced his resignation in a speech broadcast on state television. General Awad Ibn Auf’s announcement came late on Friday as tens of thousands rallied in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, demanding a civilian-led transition after the military overthrow of the country’s longtime ruler, Omar al-Bashir. “I, the head of the military council, announce I am giving up the post,” Ibn Auf said, adding he took the decision to preserve unity of the armed forces. “This is for the benefit of our nation, without having to look at special interests, big or small that may impede its progress ... I would like to recommend that you work together and reach a solution very speedily,” he added. Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Adelrahman Burhan will now head the transitional council. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum, said protesters in Khartoum greeted Ibn
Auf’s announcement with “ululating and cheering”. “People are celebrating on the streets; they are saying that they managed to topple President Omar al-Bashir after four months of protests and less than 48 hours after the military council took over, they managed to bring down Ibn Auf, too,” she said. “He [Burhan] does not have the same tainted record ... that most of the [al-Bashir] regime officials had,” Morgan added, citing Ibn Auf and Bashir’s alleged responsibility for war crimes in Sudan’s western region of Darfur between 2003-2008. Burhan is expected to address the Sudanese public on Saturday, Morgan said, adding that the armed forces will be keen to gauge the response from pro-democracy protesters to Ibn Auf’s resignation. “The protesters are waiting to see what kind of vision and plan Burhan has, and to see if he is going to be the person they would want to represent them during the transition period, or whether they should continue with
their sit-in,” she said. The Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), which spearheaded the months-long protests that triggered al-Bashir’s overthrow, praised Ibn Auf’s departure as a “triumph of the will of the masses”. Protesters in Khartoum, meanwhile, told Al Jazeera the toppling of al-Bashir and resignation of Ibn Auf within 36 hours was the result of “patience, sacrifices and struggle for four months”. “We now want to witness the power being handed over to the civilians, this is the ... democracy and freedom we aimed to achieve,” Abdul Jabar Ibrahim, 60, said. The SPA called on protesters in the capital to continue a six-day-long sit-in outside the army headquarters in and take to the streets outside the military’s “various garrisons” elsewhere throughout the country. Earlier on Friday the group pledged to “resist the emergency, curfew and all the actions announced by the coupists”.
Suspected al-Shabab fighters kidnap two Cuban doctors in Kenya
Suspected al-Shabab fighters have kidnapped two Cuban doctors and killed their police bodyguard in northern Kenya near the border with Somalia, which is where the armed group is based, according to officials. The doctors were ambushed as they headed to work on Friday, said David Ohito, communications director for the Mandera county government. Ali Roba, the governor of Mandera, said in a statement that the gunmen’s vehicle blocked the doctors’ vehicle “and opened fire at their bodyguards, killing one instantly”. The abductors might have taken the doctors to Somalia, police spokesman Charles Owino said. He said the doctors’ driver had been detained to help with investigations. A police official identified the doctors as Dr Assel Herera Correa,
a general physician, and Dr Landy Rodriguez, a surgeon. They were stationed at the Mandera County Referral Hospital as part of a group of about 100 Cubans who came to Kenya last year to help boost health services. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press. “Our security agencies are working with Somalia Government Security agencies to pursue the abductors into Somalia with the objective of rescuing the victims,” Kenyan police chief Hillary Mutyambai said in a statement. It was the second abduction of a foreigner in five months, likely carried out by the Somali-based al-Shabab. In November, an Italian volunteer, Silvia Romano, was kidnapped in southern Kenya’s coastal region by gunmen linked to al-Shabab. She has
not been found yet. The al-Qaeda affiliate has been fighting since 2007 to topple Somalia’s central government, which is backed by a 20,000-strong African Union force, known as AMISOM, and establish its own rule based on strict interpretation of Islamic law. The group also conducts frequent assaults in Kenya, mostly in the region bordering Somalia, to put pressure on the Kenyan government to withdraw its troops from Somalia. On Tuesday, the US embassy had upgraded its travel warning for Kenya, listing “do not travel” for Mandera county. “Exercise increased caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism and kidnapping,” the warning read. Kidnappings in Kenya are relatively rare but can have a devastating effect on tourism, a major income-earner.
Ukraine’s presidential candidates have travelled to Paris and Berlin to seek international backing nine days before the April 21 runoff vote. French President Emmanuel Macron first hosted comic Volodymyr Zelensky, a political novice who is tipped to become Ukraine’s sixth president, for talks in Paris before a planned meeting with the incumbent, President Petro Poroshenko. Poroshenko, who is anxious to make up ground lost to Zelensky by showing off his experience, travelled earlier in the day to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. Both men were expected to discuss Ukraine’s five-year war with Russianbacked rebels in the country’s east, a conflict in which France and Germany have attempted to broker peace. Polls show 41-year-old Zelensky, whose only political experience involves playing the president on TV, easily defeating Poroshenko for the leadership of a country jaded by the conflict with Russia. “Very cool,” Zelensky said of his meeting with Macron. “We spoke about life, we spoke about the main things,” he told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. “We spoke about stopping the war in Donbass,” he said, referring to the conflict in eastern Ukraine. In the first round of the presidential vote held on March 31, Poroshenko
received fewer than 16 percent of the votes whereas Zelensky secured more than 30 percent. Merkel told a news conference with Poroshenko that she had invited him to Berlin to continue their “constant exchange” on security. “I think it’s important that we continue to discuss, even at a time when the elections are under way,” she said. France and Germany are part of the so-called Normandy Quartet with Ukraine and Russia set up to try end the conflict between Kiev and Moscowbacked separatists. The war has killed 13,000 people since 2014. Poroshenko, a 53-year-old chocolate mogul, has positioned himself as the only candidate able to stand up to the Kremlin. On Friday, he downplayed the significance of Zelensky’s rise from comedian, telling reporters in Berlin: “We have politicians who are not part of the political system, but that also exists in other parts of Europe. Ukraine is not an exception.” On Thursday, he had described the Paris and Berlin visits as “especially important” in the face of what he called Western “attempts” to lift sanctions against Russia, imposed after its 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula. Kiev and its Western allies accuse Russia of supporting the rebels militarily. Moscow denies that.
Pakistanis form human image of Christchurch mosque
Thousands of Pakistanis clad in white have gathered in the central city of Jhang to make a human image of New Zealand’s Al Noor mosque in Christchurch city, where 50 people were killed by a white supremacist four weeks ago. Drone images showed worshippers standing in formation on Friday, their snow-white traditional shalwar kameez and prayer caps in stark contrast to the emerald green of a public field, as a second group formed the words “Islam is peace” nearby. Huge New Zealand and Pakistani flags were also displayed along with a giant banner which read: “Solidarity with the martyrs of Christchurch from Pakistan”. The tribute was organised by the Muslim Institute, a non-government organisation aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Muslim world, which also released the drone footage. Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian and self-avowed white
supremacist, has been charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 of attempted murder after opening fire at the Linwood and Al Noor mosques on March 15. Nine of the victims were of Pakistani origin. One, Naeem Rashid, was posthumously given an award for bravery by Pakistan after he apparently tried to tackle the gunman before being shot. Tribute organisers praised the New Zealand government after what had been a “very tough time” for Muslims in the country - especially Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Her response “not only soothed the wounds of Muslims but also assured them that Muslims in their country are safe”, said Sahibzada Sultan Ahmad Ali, a religious scholar and one of the organisers. “We worked really hard to make this model,” one participant, Noor Hassan, said of the tribute. “It was so pleasant that we were ready to stand like this for the whole day.”

From the number of medals won so far, Nigeria seems to be topping with three gold medals and two silvers while Egypt are playing second fiddle to the West African giant in the competition. WWC: You have no reason to fumble in France – Aisha Falode warns Falcons World Cup bound Super Falcons have been told to avoid wobbling and fumbling in France as that will amount to making nonsense of their first grade preparation. President of the Nigeria Women Football League Aisha Falode who gave the warning, noted that no batch of the Nation’s senior female team has been so well prepared ahead of the world cup than the current team. The team according to her did not only get the best of camping, friendly and competitive matches as shape up for the world cup but also have an experienced technical bench that understands what is at stake. “No Super falcon’s team has been given the type of preparation that you have had and so we expect that you will go there and do the needful” she said at the unveiling of the touring World cup trophy to the public at the Nicon Hilton Abuja on Thursday. Many agree that current super
Falcons had what could pass for a good preparation for the forthcoming world cup, going straight from their 9th title at the Africa Women’s Nations Cup in Ghana to invitational tourney in China and then to the Cyprus Cup and finally to Spain where they also played two friendly matches winning one and losing one. Some die-hard followers of women football in the country say the only way the team can be said to have done well is if they can go beyond the Quarterfinals which is the highest Nigeria has achieved since inception in 1991. The quarterfinal feat was achieved at the 1999 edition in United States while other editions have ended in the group stage. Coach Thomas Dennerby has the task of going beyond that if he hopes to be counted as having made reasonable contribution to female football in Nigeria. Some of the soccer fans who came
out to see the trophy however called on the NFF to ensure that there are no distractions in camp. The reaction is not unconnected with a recent report that there are squabbles in in camp over the choice of captain for the team. While some in the Glass House reportedly want Onome Ebi to captain the team, the coach prefers Rita Chikwelu. Ebi and Chikwelu have been joint captains since the arrival of Dennerby and both lifted the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations trophy in Ghana. A new dimension was added when France based attacker, Desire Oparanozie, was named captain after the last friendly against Canada which Falcons lost 2-1. Falcons will battle Norway, South Korea and hosts France in the group stage of the World cup which kicks off June 7th.
ICC U-19 World Cup: Training tour will boost John Ogu seeks fresh challenges outside Israel Nigeria’s performance – Chuma Anosike Nigeria international John Ogu But after a difficult 2018/19 He was part of his country’s Chuma Anosike, the Chairman, Anambra Cricket Association, on Friday said that adequate training tour would help prepare the national U-19 team, adequately ahead of the ICC world Cup in 2020. The national cricket U-19 team, the Young Yellow Green, made history in Namibia in March after qualifying the country for her first ICC U-19 World Cup. Anosike said that the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) should organise extended training tour to enhance the team participation at the World Cup slated for South Africa. “Before the qualifiers in Windeok, Namibia, the U-19 team was in Zambabwe for pre-tournament series and that really helped the team in the qualifiers. “Engaging the boys in extended training tour, ahead of the World Cup, will boost their performance and increase their playing time. “I was in Namibia during the
qualifiers to watch the team and they did excellently well,” he said. The former NCF Vice-President also commended the present board for moving the sport forward, urging it not to relent on its effort. He also appealed to stakeholders and private bodies to complement the effort of NCF in ensuring a good outing for the U-19 team at the World Cup.
has admitted he wants to leave Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheva at the end of the season. The midfielder’s contract ends this summer and, despite talks with the fivetime Israeli champions, he is keen to seek fresh challenges elsewhere. It means the 30-year-old, who has won six domestic titles in Israel, will leave after five years at the club. “I feel like what they are offering is not enough for me,” Ogu told BBC Sport. “And I need a different challenge now. I feel like I can still offer a lot at the top level of European football. “I hope something positive comes from them [Hapoel Beer Sheva] but if not I’ll move on to further my career somewhere else. “I believe I have the ability to continue my career in Germany or Spain.” After stints in Slovenia, Spain and Portugal, Ogu moved to Hapoel Beer Sheva in September 2014 after his contract with Academica de Coimbra was ended by mutual consent. He has had a successful time at the club winning three successive league titles as well as lifting the Israeli Super Cup twice. His time in Israel also saw him recalled to the national team and he was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
season which has seen secondplaced Hapoel Beer Sheva twenty-seven points adrift of leaders Maccabi Tel Aviv, the Super Eagle is convinced it is the right time to leave. “I achieved a lot in Israel but this year has been too bad for my team and for me personally,” the 2017 Israeli Cup winner added. “That’s life, that’s football and now I am thinking ahead and looking forward to a greater challenge. “I think I have the ability and the skills to achieve success elsewhere. Just waiting for my agent to know the next direction.” He has made 186 Hapoel appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing eight assists. At international level, Ogu has two goals in 22 appearances for the three-time African champions. He played three group matches for Nigeria at the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup and in three 2014 World Cup qualifiers, but was omitted from the squad for the finals in Brazil by coach Stephen Keshi.

Dennerby: Why I made Desire Oparanozie Super Falcons captain
Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby has explained why he had to choose Francebased forward Desire Oparanizie to lead the team to France at the World Cup later this year. Oparanozie got the nod to captain the team after Monday’s international friendly against Canada in Spain which newsmen gather may not go down well with the top guns at the Nigeria Football Federation who wanted Onome Ebi. Oparanozie got Nigeria’s goal in the first half of the game after profiting from a brilliant
pass from Uchenna Kalu. In an interview, Dennerby stated that he arrived at the conclusion of choosing his captain base on the value the individual placed on her self. ”Oparanozie is disciplined and has good character, she is young and has a longer playing span in the team,” Dennerby said. The captainship was a controversy at the Awcon finals in Ghana where the team won it. There was a risen dust as to who to lift the trophy between two veterans Rita Chikwelu and Onome Ebi.
bantamweight 118, super bantam 112, featherweight 116 and any other super featherweight 129. “In these categories, all these female boxers are running, they don’t want to fight me. When I was back in Africa, they were reigning all over the U.S. and they were unbeatable. But ‘The Iron Lady’ has arrived and everybody has run away, nobody wants to fight. I mean I’m knocking on their doors and they don’t want to come out…” Despite the frustration from not getting opponents, she is optimistic ”I will bring them out because they have what I need, they have all the titles that I desire. I will keep collecting those titles from them and pack them because I know they will not take it from me.”

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has described the increase in reports of alleged racist abuse in English football as “really painful” and bad for the game. Premier League club Arsenal opened an investigation after a video on social media appeared to show a supporter racially abusing Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during their Europa League encounter on Thursday. Chelsea, in action at the same time away to Slavia Prague, slammed as an “embarrassment” the fans who allegedly sang racist songs about Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. Raheem Sterling, Wilfried Zaha, Danny Rose and multiple Football League players have recently called out instances of abuse from the stands and on social media, while equality and inclusion organisation Kick It Out has expressed concern about the level of discrimination at grassroots level. Aubameyang had a banana skin thrown in his direction during the north London derby in December and the Gabon international expressed frustration when quizzed on the
subject following the 2-0 win over Napoli. “I am really disappointed about that,” Aubameyang told reporters. “I had the same problem here against Tottenham. When you are black like me it is really painful, I think, because we are in 2019 and obviously it is not good for football in England. “Hopefully we will find a way to kick it out.” Arsenal are well placed to reach the Europa League semi-finals thanks to their polished first-leg performance against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, although their poor away form will come under scrutiny in the reverse fixture at Stadio San Paolo. “We know away we have some difficulties. We have to improve that,” Aubameyang said. “We are confident. We had a good result and we have everything in our hands. We will go there and try to win the game. “If you win there I think you send a message to everybody. It will be an important game and a good challenge for us.”
