political culture in Nigeria.” The President made the appeal on Wednesday during the second Signing of the National Peace Accord 2019 organised by the National Peace Committee at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. The Daily Times reports that on December 11, 2018, the Presidential Candidates along with their party chairmen signed the first 2019 National Peace Accord indicating their commitment to free, fair and credible elections in the country. President Buhari noted that the forthcoming elections are very special and significant for the growth of the nation’s Democracy. According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), our electoral Umpire, has already assured that they have done everything possible to ensure free and fair elections. “We will vote according to Parties, but in the end, the only real Party is Nigeria, our country. Our elections are important only to the extent that they make her strong. Let us do our best and ask God to bless us and our country,” he said. Buhari, who appealed to the young people in the country not to allow themselves to be used as agents of violence, pleaded with them to eschew all forms of violence and cooperate with all the relevant agencies during these elections. His words: “We are witnessing an exciting development in the area of the engagement of our Youth and Women in the democratic process. Hitherto, these groups have often not been in the mainstream of our political competition. It is in appreciation of their contribution that we passed

the Not Too Young to Run Bill last year. The success of the Act is illustrated by the unprecedented number of young men and women who have stepped forward to participate in this process as Candidates at all levels. Significantly, we have witnessed also the emergence of Women as Candidates across the political space. “These elections are taking place against the backdrop of the emergence of an unprecedented number of Political Parties. As of now, we have 91 Political Parties, out of which over 70 fielded Presidential Candidates. Although some Candidates have dropped out of the race, there is no doubt in our minds that our country is moving forward and that our democracy is expanding and also deepening. “I call on all Nigerians to contribute to the building of a viable polity by more active participation well beyond the mere casting of votes. Elections by themselves do not constitute Democracy. It is the spirit of citizenship engagement that utilizes the energy of citizens towards the attainment of good governance. “We have assembled here to mark the final phase of our campaigns and we are now at the doorstep of our elections. The Campaigns so far have gone well and we thank God for that. For the few incidents in which people lost their lives largely through accidents, we pray that God grants them eternal peace. Now campaigns are over and our next assignment is for us all, citizens and contestants alike, to go out and exercise our civic duties.” According to the president, “it was to ensure this that I made sure that INEC received all the resources they needed to perform their job”. He said that the nation’s security agencies have been

fully briefed and they know that their visible neutrality is key to the conduct, credibility and success of the elections. He commended the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Rt. Honourable Patricia Scotland, saying that her presence at the peace accord and her friendship means a lot to Nigeria as a country. The President also thanked the members of the Diplomatic Corps, the International Team of Monitors for standing by the country, adding that their presence would help to validate Nigeria’s process and commitment to growing her democracy, while thanking General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Chairman of the National Peace Committee and all his members for the hard work they have put into ensuring that the elections are peaceful. He said that the national peace committee contributed significantly in shaping the 2015 elections, “and we are sure that the same impact will be felt in these elections.” Meanwhile, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in his remarks, quoted the words of former President Goodluck Jonathan, “My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” which he said, remains a benchmark for him. He said that every candidate must remember that this election is about the future of Nigeria, adding, “we must abide by the will of the people as freely expressed through elections, under the terms of our constitution.” Atiku Abubakar pleaded with every staff and the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force, to be fair arbiters in the

Again, NJC delays decision on Onnoghen, Muhammad Andrew Orolua, Abuja Again, the National Judicial Council (NJC), on Wednesday, delayed its decision on the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, and the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, but accepted that the complaints against them are worthy of its disciplinary committee investigations. In continuation of its emergency meeting on Wednesday, the Council constituted a five-man Committee to investigate petitions written against Justice W. S. N. Onnoghen and Justice I. T. Muhammad in line with Rule 20 (1) of its Regulations. NJC also forwarded new petition written against Justice I. T. Muhammad by Action People’s Party (APP) for his response within seven working days. The Council said it has accepted the result of the preliminary assessment of the petitions against Justice Walter Onnoghen and Justice Tanko Muhammad, and that the petitions were worthy of further investigation and should not be terminated under Rule 17 of the Judicial Discipline Regulations of the Council.

Onnoghen Consequently, the council constituted a five-member Investigation Committee pursuant to Rule 20 (1) of the Judicial Discipline Regulations under the Chairmanship of Justice S. A. Akintan, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. It said that a new petition against Justice Ibrahim T. Muhammad by the Action People’s Party (APP) was referred to him for his comments within an abridged 7-days.

Council directed the Investigation Committee to work expeditiously, determine all the petitions and responses and report to Council for a final decision. As NJC deferred its decision, the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), on Wednesday, in Abuja, ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), to arrest and produce Justice Walter Onnoghen in court in the next 48 hours for trial on

Friday. Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar, issued the bench warrant against Onnoghen while ruling on an application by the Federal Government for his arrest following Onnoghen continued absence in court that has prevented his arraignment on six count charge. Tribunal Chairman, Hon. Danladi Umar, recalled that at the last sitting on February 4, the tribunal had insisted that Onnoghen must make himself available in court on February 13, for arraignment over alleged non declaration of his assets. When the matter was called on Wednesday, Onnoghen was not in court and his lawyers led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), prayed the court to take all pending applications particularly the issue of the tribunal’s jurisdiction. The senior counsel insisted that the issue of jurisdiction must be determined one way or another before the Tribunal could proceed to take further motions. He therefore prayed the Tribunal to allow the issue of jurisdiction being the foundation of the trial to be resolved in the interest of justice. But, counsel to the Federal Government, Aliyu Umar (SAN), opposed the application made by

Elections: EFCC warns against vote buying Promises reward for whistle blowers with useful information Insists on prosecution of offenders

Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja

As part of collaboration for successful elections, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned against vote buying ahead of Saturday’s presidential election. The EFCC has also promised reward for any Nigerian with useful information leading to the arrest of culprits, saying that the reward is in accordance with the Whistle Blowing policy. In a statement by the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the anti-graft body warned against voters’ inducement, saying that the full weight of the relevant

laws will be applied against perpetrators and receivers of illicit funds to undermine the elections and national security. The statement signed by antigraft agency acting Head, Media & Publicity, Tony Orilade, reads in part: “We wish to warn Nigerians against those who intend to engage in voters’ inducement. “There are existing laws in the Electoral Act, 2010 (EA), which forbid voters inducement. “For the avoidance of doubt, Section 124 of the Electoral Act, 2010 says that any person paying money to any person as bribe at any election is liable to punishment of N500, 000 fine or 12 months imprisonment or both upon conviction.

“Section 124 of the Electoral Act, 2010 also states that any person receiving any money or gift for voting or to refrain from voting at any election will be liable to a maximum fine of N500, 000 or 12 months imprisonment or both. “We therefore urge Nigerians to avoid or resist inducement from corrupt politicians and vote for the candidates of their choice. “We also seize this opportunity to state that that EFCC in collaboration with INEC will reward any patriotic citizen that provides an authentic information leading to the apprehension of any culprit of vote buying in accordance with the Whistle Blowing Policy. “Our investigations and

intelligence gathering sources have revealed that certain corrupt politicians have perfected plans to pollute the electoral process with illicit and looted funds. “We also have intelligence reports on the plans by some countries in collaboration with some politicians and looters to bring in foreign currencies to induce voters and undermine the elections. “But our operatives in collaboration with sister agencies are doing everything possible to block the illicit funds and ensure credible polls in the country. “It is our collective duty to resist attempts to corrupt our electoral process by exposing the evil perpetrators”.

Lagos/Badagry Expressway: FG seeks private sector participants to fast-track completion

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, said Federal Government was working with Lagos State Government on the possibility of private sector involvement in the reconstruction of Lagos/Badagry Expressway. Osinbajo disclosed this during his visit to the palace of the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Toyi 1, as part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) election campaign tour. According to the vice president, private sector involvement will fast-track the completion of the

construction project on time. “The contract for the project has been awarded; it is only to ensure that adequate finance is given to the contractor. “We are also working on the possibility of private sector involvement in the project because if it is government alone, it will slow down the project. “So, we are working with the Lagos State Government to see how to put all resources together to do it quickly. “It is a very useful commercial

road, it is also attractive for the private sector to invest in,’’ Osinbajo said. On the Badagry Deep Seaport Project, the vice-president said that the project had gone very far. According to him, the most important thing about the project is that it is not a government project. “The Federal Government has already given approval to the private sector companies who are promoting and building it. “The role of the government is to grant necessary approvals and those

approvals have been granted. “So, what we are waiting for is for the private sector to put together the resources to complete the project. “It is a big project and it is going to be one of the biggest port in Africa,’’ Osinbajo said. Earlier, the Badagry monarch had urged the federal government to fasttrack the completion of the Lagos/ Badagry/Seme Expressway. According to the Akran, the international road is a major

Onnoghen’s counsel and insisted that the issue of the defendant’s absence in court to take his plea, must be first addressed. He said that until the defendant appears physically in the tribunal court, the issue of jurisdiction and other motions cannot be taken, adding that while in court, Onnoghen has the right to refuse to take plea but has no right to refuse to appear in court. The counsel recalled that since January 14, when Onnoghen ought to have been arraigned, he was not in court and that even after the service of the charge had been effected to Onnoghen in person, he still did not appear in court. The government lawyer, who cited authorities to support his submissions, promised to make the authorities available to the Tribunal to enable it arrive at a just conclusion. However, in a surprise move, the CCT Chairman brought out a written ruling and read it just as the government lawyer concluded his argument. In the ruling, Umar ordered that a bench warrant be issued against Onnoghen for his arrest either by the Inspector General of Police or the Director General of the Department of State Services and to produce him before the Tribunal this Friday. Umar said that Onnoghen must be in the dock on Friday unfailingly, adding that he must first submit himself to the jurisdiction of the tribunal and raise whatever objection he has to the trial thereafter. “I recall at the last adjournment, I ruled that the defendant must appear in court today. My memory is intact, but since he has chosen not to be in court, this tribunal has no option other than to use machinery at its disposal to compel the appearance in court. “For this reason, bench warrant is hereby issued to the Inspector General of Police or the Director General of the Department of State Services to produce him before this tribunal on Friday. “He must be in the dock on Friday unfailingly”, he said. Shortly after the ruling, the Federal Government lawyer drew the attention of the Chairman to the fact that this Friday is an eve of the presidential election, but Umar dismissed the information and insisted that Onnoghen must be brought before him on the next adjourned date. Umar, who did not allow the two other members of the tribunal to make input or react to the ruling, announced that the matter be adjourned till Friday. Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal on Wednesday adjourned appeals filed by Justice Onnoghen challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal to try him without NJC first determining his capability, to February 25. The adjournment was sequel to the request by the Federal Government lawyer, Koloso that a private prosecutor, Aliyu Umar (SAN), who is prosecuting Onnoghen case at the tribunal wants to handle the appeals himself.

Imo PDP guber candidate exposes Okorocha’s N1.2bn sleaze Bonaventure Melah The campaign organisation of Imo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, said it has uncovered massive fraud and diversion funds belonging to the people of the by Governor Rochas Okorocha to the tune of N1.2 billion. In a press statement signed by its spokesperson, Kissinger Ikeokwu Esq and made available to The Daily Times, on Wednesday, the Emeka Ihedioha Campaign Organisation said the outgoing administration illegally paid a private consultancy firm a “whopping sum of N1, 200,000,000.00 (one billion, two hundred million Naira), as six months payment in advance, purportedly for payment of salaries for six months at a monthly remuneration of N200, 000,00000 (two hundred million naira) monthly. “The shady contract with the yet to be named company is suspicious because the Rochas Okorocha administration remembered to engage a contractor to manage payment of workers’ salaries just three months to the end of its eight years tenure. “The unilateral

agreement entered on behalf of the state by Governor Rochas Okorocha and his family will mortgage Imo finances to a consultancy firm whereby the state is required to pay N200,000,00000 (two hundred million naira) monthly, is illegal, fraudulent and unacceptable,” the statement said. According to it, the news that the administration of Rochas Okorocha in Imo State paid such amount to a company upfront when it has not rendered any service to the state is suspicious. “Why will a government that has only three months to the end of its tenure tie Imo people to such waste of scarce resources? Why would Imo State government pay a private firm N200,000,00000 (two hundred million naira) monthly for mere payment of salaries, a service the Imo State Ministry of Finance has been handling even in the final three months of its administration. “The manner in which the state government paid six months fee upfront to the tune of N1.2 Billion exposes the deep intents that this contract is a mere ploy to divert Imo funds for the illegal purposes of funding Okorocha and his son in-law’s desperate

Okorocha

bids to maintain Imo as their cash cow through the upcoming elections. “We are therefore calling on the Rochas Okorocha administration to immediately cancel the fraudulent contract and return the said sum of N1,200,000 (one Billion, two hundred million Naira) paid up front to the shady firm with immediate effect. “We wish to use this same opportunity to warn the relevant personnel of the Imo State Ministry of Finance to resist all illegal orders that will pitch them against the relevant laws of the land, as the Okorocha administration begin their last desperate plundering of Imo State funds and properties

in the final weeks of its failed administration. Any person whether staff of Imo State government or individual who aides this government in any manner to misappropriate public funds will answer for it at the appropriate time. “We urge Imo people to speak up against the plundering of our state’s commonwealth as we endure the last days of Rochas Okorocha misgovernance in Imo,” the statement said, adding that all monies belonging to Imo people that have been stolen by the administration of Rochas Okorocha would be recovered if Emeka Ihedioha is elected governor in March.

JOHESU flays FG’s move to privatise public health institutions Demands release of withheld April/May salaries

Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), on Wednesday, rejected moves by the Federal Government to privatise public health institutions. National Chairman of JOHESU, Comrade Joy Bioblemoye, while speaking at a mass rally in Abuja against happenings in the health sector, said the challenges facing the sector is corruption, and lack of fair management in the system. Some of the placards carried by the workers

had inscription such as “Adewale must go, no JOHESU, no hospital, health workers say no to corruption” among others. The workers who were on a three-day rally over the plight of JOHESU members, lampooned the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewale, for withholding workers’ salaries for the months of April and May 2018. He said the workers would not hesitate to shut down the sector, should nothing happen after the rally by the workers. Comrade Bioblemoye

while calling for President Buhari’s intervention into the matter, disclosed that over 90 percent of Chief Medical Directors of public institutions have their private hospitals. He said such practice lead to the rots in the system due to clash of interest. The union leader said the mass rally was to sensitise Nigerian public and government that the workers are not strike mongers. He said: “We are here today to sensitise the general public of the happenings in the health

sector. We want the world to know that the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewale, should to respect court order and release our salaries for the months of April and May. “While the court asked both parties nor to do anything that can jeopardise the peace process, the minister went ahead to implement no work, no pay”. The JOHESU national chairman further asked Nigerians hold the Health minister responsible should anything go wrong in the sector.

‘Presidential candidates must accept outcome of Saturday poll’ Continued from page 3 upcoming elections while letting neutrality prevail. He said: “For emphasis and in the spirit of fair play, I also urge our security agencies, not to embark on indiscriminate arrests of members of the opposition, 24 to 48 hours before elections, as has been the case in previous elections. “Hopefully, our democracy should emerge stronger from this process with the 2019 elections proving better managed than the 2015 process, which was adjudged free and fair with the then opposition’s victory unobstructed “Consequently, I also appeal to the President, General Buhari, to use his good office to ensure that every eligible person who casts their vote is confident in the process and in the belief that their vote will count. “Again, despite concerns expressed by my party leaders concerning likely electoral malpractices and the intimidation of voters and observers, I trust that our election officials and security services will do their duty in accordance with their oath and obligations.” The PDP candidate also appealed to Nigeria’s citizens to go out and cast their votes for the candidates of their choice, to be peaceful at all times, and confident in the nation’s democracy, its institutions and processes. Earlier, the National Peace Committee Chairman, Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar (rtd), said that the substance of the Accord was “our commitment to free, fair and credible elections in our dear country.” “In the Accord, we agreed to, among other things, Run an issue-based campaign and pledged that our electoral

campaigns will not involve any religious incitement, ethnic or tribal profiling, both by ourselves and all agents acting in our names. “Now that the campaigns have come to an end, we meet today to renew our pledge for peaceful elections. We therefore call on all fellow citizens of our dear country, and our Party supporters, to refrain from violence or any acts that may in any way jeopardise our collective vision of a free, fair and credible election. In addition, we call on INEC and all Security Agencies to ensure strict adherence to their constitutional roles. We also pledge to respect the outcome of free, fair and credible elections. “Today again, we renew our commitment to a united, democratic and prosperous Nigeria. We want to appeal to all Nigerians to stand together at this critical phase of our Nation’s history,” he stated. In her address, the Commonwealth Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, urged the all the candidates abide by the rules and ensure that their followers keep act peacefully for the good of the country. She said that Nigeria is an important country in the Commonwealth, adding that the health of Nigeria is the strength of Africa. The Head of European Union Delegation to Nigeria, Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, who spoke on behalf of the international community, alongside other speakers, also charged the candidates to ensure the peaceful conduct during and after the elections, appealing to the electoral umpire and the security agencies to keep their neutrality during the polls.

FG seeks private sector participants to fast-track completion Continued from page 5 gateway to other West African countries. “Kindly consider and fasttrack the planned establishment and construction of Badagry Deep Seaport Project that has been on the drawing board for about five years. “Since Badagry has joined the league of Oil Producing Communities in Nigeria, we shall be happy if you encourage the Lagos State Government to send, as a matter of urgency, the bill to domesticate the Niger Delta Development Commission Act as amended in 2017 to the State House of Assembly for ratification. “We want provision of infrastructure which includes electricity, schools, health centres and pipe-borne water in Seme border town,’’ the Akran said. He also urged the Federal

Government to upgrade facilities at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) and provide employment for its teeming youths in federal government ministries, departments and agencies. “We will be glad if the government will consider and approve the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic or its equivalent in our community,’’ the Akran pleaded. The Akran thanked the Federal Government for significant improvement in supply of electricity in the coastal town, adding that its communities now enjoyed ten hours of power supply daily. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vice-president took the APC campaign train to Badagry International Market, Agbalata where he solicited for residents’ votes in the upcoming elections.

Polls: UK threatens Nigerian politicians Short News with visa ban, asset forfeiture Gov Obiano beefs up security in INEC offices,

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, has warned that Nigerian politicians who incite or execute violence during Saturday’s elections would have their visas banned and assets in the UK seized. Ms Laing gave the warning at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja to unveil the Election Situation Room of the Civil Society Situation Room set up by a coalition of civil society organisations to monitor the polls in Abuja. She reminded political parties that apart from their assets being seized in the UK, they could experience a worst case scenario of prosecution. “We will apply this absolutely across board not directed to any particular party; so, we are monitoring and looking out for hate speech. “We are concerned about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally which has hate speech a lot and we will like to call that kind of thing out. “Our two worries are on security not just

on the role the police will play to ensure peace but about the role individuals play by getting angry or militias being paid to disrupt elections . “Then, another worry is fake news (and) that is why we rely on CSOs and we will work with them to get information,’’ she said UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, thanked the CSOs for the launch of the situation room, describing it as a good work toward the elections. Mr. Ibn Chambas said it showed that the groups were prepared for the elections and ready to monitor the voting process thus helping UN with ideas on the process in the country. The American Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, said the special thing with the room was not just about that CSOs would say and do but about what every Nigerian would say and do. “The time has come for this outside world that cares so much about Nigeria to listen to the people of Nigeria and to see what each of

them do and then forward the results to lift Nigeria up,’’ Mr Symington said. Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria, Ketil Karlsen, said the work of CSOs over the last years gave hope that continued consolidation of democracy clamoured for internally could happen. Jude Illoh, Country Director of Open Society for West Africa (OSIWA), said that though there a lot of apprehension about the election, Nigeria would overcome it. Mr. Illoh said Nigeria’s democracy had experienced good progress. “We have defied dictators, we have defied civil war and everything you can imagine, insurgency terrorism everything thrown at us we are still standing. “I can tell you that the morning after the election we will be standing as a country, proudly Nigerians, ‘’ he said. Clement Nwankwo, the convener of the Situation room, said the situation room would help monitor the election and give Nigerians information as it came in order to guarantee free, air and credible elections.

Osinbajo: AIB releases preliminary report on helicopter crash Issues 2 safety recommendations to NCAA, Caverton helicopters

Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo, Lagos Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) yesterday released a preliminary report on accident involving Agustawestland AW139 Helicopter operated by Caverton Helicopters Limited with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-CML which occurred at Kabba Stadium, Kogi State on February 2, 2019 with 12 persons on board, including the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. Releasing the report on Wednesday to journalists at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) office of the agency, Commissioner of AIB, Engr Akin Olateru stated that, the initial findings show that the helicopter had a valid certificate of airworthiness but that Caverton Helicopters Limited did not conduct site survey of the landing field prior to this flight. The Bureau also reported that Caverton Helicopters Limited did not carry out safety and risk assessment of the landing area prior to dispatch of the flight.

As a precautionary measure, AIB issued an Immediate Safety Recommendations to Caverton Helicopter, stating that “Caverton Helicopters Limited should ensure that flight operations are carried out in accordance with the company’s approved operations manual, vis-a-vis site survey and proper safety risk analysis are done before dispatching any helicopter to unapproved landing pads”. To the aviation regulatory agency, AIB also issued that “NCAA should issue an Advisory Circular to all helicopter operators flying in Nigeria to be alert of the possibility and the effect of brownout. Appropriate procedures should be put in place to mitigate its effect(s)”. According to Engr Olateru, other initial findings as discovered by AIB are that: “drug and alcohol test for the crew could not be carried out; the flight crew were properly licensed and adequately rested to operate the flight; the Captain was the Pilot Flying (PF), and the Co-pilot was the Pilot Monitoring (PM); the take-off, climb out, cruise and approach phases were normal

and that during cruise at 5,000 ft and at about 10 minutes to touchdown, the crew noticed the flight recorder light on the Crew Alerting System (CAS) come on and quick Reference Handbook items were accomplished. Other findings by AIB include: another helicopter operated by Nigeria Police Force (Bell 412; 5N-PEJ) landed ahead of NGR002; the crew briefed on landing in brownout and used the Company’s Brownout Landing Procedures; during the landing, at about 50 ft to touchdown, a heavy brownout enveloped the helicopter and the crew lost visual contact with the ground; the Co-Pilot called out radio altimeter 35, 30, 25, 20, 15 and no more; at about 14:34 h, the helicopter touched down hard on the right main landing gear and rolled over to the right; the crew carried out Emergency Landing Procedures which included immediate engines shutdown, fuel shut OFF, battery switch OFF, and generators switch off; all occupants of the helicopter were evacuated uninjured and that the helicopter was substantially damaged.

Kwara state Governor, Alh Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara will emerge victorious in Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections in the state. The Governor said from the enthusiasm shown by the people of the state so far during the party’s campaign rally across the state, the PDP is coasting home to victory. The governor who addressed PDP supporters in Iporin, Oke-Oyi , and Akerebiata; all in Ilorin East local government area of the state urged the people to troop out en-mass and vote for the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Kwara central senatorial candidate, Dr Bukola Saraki and all the party’s candidates for national assembly across the state. He urged them to repeat same on March 2nd by voting for PDP’s governorship candidate in the state, Hon. Razak Atunwa and all the party’s candidates for the state house of assembly seats. Ahmed assured the people of the state of new lease of life under the PDP government if they vote for Atiku and all PDP candidates in the elections. He said the opposition All Progressives Congress has no plans for the people of the state but was only out to deceive the people and get to power by all means.

Election: AG uncovers alleged plot by APC to incriminate PDP chieftains in A’Ibom Isaac Job, Uyo The Akwa Ibom State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Uwemedimo Nwoko has alleged a plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District to hire armed thugs from within and outside the state into Ika and Etim Ekpo council areas during the forthcoming election and turn back to implicate People Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the area. According to the Attorney General, the plot was part of the recently busted plan by the opposition to incriminate, arrest and detain some key members of the PDP from the areas. Addressing correspondents in Uyo yesterday, Nwoko listed the targeted PDP stakeholders to include; himself the Attorney General, the National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Barr Emmanuel Enoidem and the former council Chairman of Ika Hon Saviour Enyiekere. Continuing from a text tagged “Satanic plot by desperate leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to falsely frame us on trumped up allegation of gun running, hiring of armed thugs and other criminal charges”, Nwoko disclosed that a very credible intelligence report has revealed a plot by the APC leaders in the area to partner with a middle-rank police officer to secure the patronage of higher ranking police officers to carry out the plot.

Presidential poll: An open letter to Nigerians

Emmanuel Umohinyang

Dear fellow Nigerians, I hope this letter meets you in good health, especially as we go to the polls for the presidential election this Saturday. I am compelled to write you in view of our recent experiences, having taken stock of our recent history and the future of our nation. You will no doubt agree with me that Nigerians and the world had great expectations that we would rediscover ourselves as a nation when the country returned to democratic rule in 1999. They were right in view of the false steps, we initially made as a nation at infancy and the human and material resources God has bequeathed to this nation. It was these that the world saw back then, that they christened our nation, the giant of Africa. This hope was buoyed by our riches in cocoa, oil palm, groundnut, rubber, gold and many others, from which Nigeria made a fortune as a young nation. Though the gains made from the “golden era” were lost to maladministration and corruption by successive administrations, expectations were particularly high globally as we returned to civil rule in 1999. This may not be unconnected with the feelings that Nigeria had a golden chance for selfdiscovery; the country also had former President Olusegun Obasanjo, of the Peoples Democratic Party, from whom much was expected, going by his governance experience. But twenty years down the line, the question remains how well have we fared after twenty years, sixteen of which was under the PDP? Indeed, the answer to that was delivered by the outcome of the 2015 general elections, during which PDP’s sixteen inglorious years came to an end through the ballot. Curiously, this was a period during which Nigeria made billions of Dollars from crude oil, with the product rising astronomically to over hundred Dollars and remaining at same, especially during Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Despite the boom, it is on record that things became worse for Nigeria as the ordinary Nigerian was reported to be living on less than a Dollar per day in the dying days of Jonathan. Many would also not forget that even salaries of Federal Government workers and their counterparts in the states were no longer been

paid. Therefore, that was the first thing the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari confronted on assumption of office by giving bail out to states. This was particularly in view of the fact that over 24 of the 36 states of the federation could not pay workers even before the administration came in. So far, the PMB administration has given N1.9 trillion to state for salaries and pensions alone, despite dwindling oil revenue. This was at a time facts emerged that billions of Dollars set aside to fight insurgency by the Jonathan administration had found their ways into private pockets. The Buhari administration also recovered millions of Dollars from the private residence of a former Group Managing Director of NNPC who served in the immediate past administration. Through prudent management of resources’, the current administration’s impact has been felt by Nigerians in critical sectors of the economy in the last four years. Realizing that we have over – depended on oil, whose price has been unstable in the international market in the last few years, the PMB administration came up with workable economic strategies including agric through diversification of the economy, which has brought about massive employment in the agric sector. The PMB administration invested over N500 billion in the rice value chain, even as over eight new rice mills have come on stream in Ebonyi, Kebbi, and many other states, while Nigeria’s rice production has doubled compared to 2014 levels. As a result, Nigeria had since taken a front seat among rice growers in the world with increased funding and capacity development initiatives, just as the new Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) has taken off with an initial fund of $1.2b provided by the World Bank and others. For the first time, Nigeria is also reaping massively from yam and cassava such that foreign exchange is now been made from yam exportation to Europe, a clear departure from the PDP era when we spent hundreds of millions of Dollars importing rice alone. This is even as the price of garri, rice and

yams have fallen significantly in the market due to mass production. In the power sector, this government generated almost three times of the 2,800 Mega watts it inherited from the Jonathan administration with additional power generation by the end of 2018. This was partly due to N701 Billion payment assurance programme of the current administration which has resulted in a 50 percent expansion in grid capacity which rose to 7,125 as at December, 2017. Even markets like Ariria market in Aba and Sura market in Lagos now enjoy 24 hours power supply through Integrated Power Project (IPP). In the area of transportation, this government has completed the Abuja – Kaduna light rail that of Lagos – Ibadan and Lagos – Abeokuta among others, for mass movement of goods and people, abandoned by the PDP. It has also successfully completed the Abuja airport run way, face lift and that of Port Harcourt airport. This is also the same story in the road transportation sector as PMB has done a lot in that sector by completing abandoned roads and initiating new ones, which has turned the country into a huge construction site. This include the Lagos – Ibadan Express way, Second Niger Bridge, Numa – Gombe Road, Enugu – Onitsha, Onitsha – Port Harcourt, Numa – Jalingo, Ilorin – Jeba etc. A lot of work is also been done on the economy which is now back on path of growth after the 2016/17 recession. This is in view of the fact that the Buhari administration has remained constant in growing agriculture and solid minerals, which is now raking in foreign exchange into the nation’s coffers. This is also helped by the fact that inflation continues to fall, while the nation’s external reserves are at their highest level in recent times. Recently, Nigeria’s stock market ended as one of the best performing in the world, thanks to the PMB administration. This administration has also not lost sight of the fact that it needs to focus on the people who are the reason for their being in office. For effect, it launched all the four components of the Social Investment Program (SIP) it promised the poor and the vulnerable to

How bad is too bad?

Wale Fatade

Two months ago, I warned in a write-up that Governor Ibikunle Amosun should be called to order as his actions in bifurcating the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State did not bode well for the party’s future. I’m no clairvoyant, but the piece was based on interviews and analysis of the politics in the home state of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. The chickens came home to roost on Monday, February 11 and if not for the dignified way President Muhammadu Buhari’s security aides handled the sad incident, only God knows how many lives would have been lost. In a clear breach of not only protocol, but of decency and dignity, Mr. Amosun not only behaved irresponsibly, he kept touching and prodding the president to the extent that one would have thought that he was going to assault him physically. But the entire blame of what happened should be laid at the doorsteps of our president. He seems to have forgotten the English saying that you can’t run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. His duplicitous or hypocritical actions of trying to have the best of both worlds led to what happened. He wanted Amosun so that he can still enjoy the support of

the new party his associate since their CPC days was floating. Buhari’s clear embrace of Janusfaced Amosun’s politics of who succeeds him made a rod for not only his own back but also the APC’s back as well. Laying the red carpet for Amosun and the APM’s governorship candidate in Abuja sowed the seeds for the horror show we witnessed yesterday. And that’s the message he has been heralding in some states where the APC is having issues. Vote for me on February 16 but when it comes to governorship, vote your choice, a clear case of having his cake and eating it. A major reason of why four years after he was elected our country is still the way it is, a reason why it took two years after one of his top aides was accused of cutting grass for millions of naira before he could be arraigned and also a reason why groups and citizens who filed Freedom of Information requests for his assets declaration forms cannot access them. We also do not know how much has been spent out of the $1 billion released from the Excess Crude Account to fund the fight against Boko Haram, but we all know how successful the battle has been. He says something and does another.

Simply put, our president is no different from the average Nigerian politician he demonizes regularly and rant about. His famous statement of “I’m for nobody but everybody” could actually be interpreted to mean “I’m for myself alone.” This is important as we go to the polls this weekend in an obvious referendum on his performance in office as an incumbent usually runs on his record in office. It is up to Nigerians to vote for him or any other presidential candidate among the plethora of options available on the ballot. My interaction over the last weekend with young adults and older folks revealed that there is still a legion of undecided citizens who are neither enamored of Buhari or PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. Apparently, they are seemingly disgusted with what the two parties offer and cannot be bothered. Two young women told me on Sunday that they would vote Fela Durotoye just as I have met supporters of Kingsley Moghalu, Tope Fasua and Omoyele Sowore. Now, it is quite possible that they change their minds or they were not saying exactly the way they will vote, but supporters of Buhari and Abubakar should not underestimate those who are angry with their candidates.

ease their economic pains. The SIP is the largest and most ambitious social safety net Programme in the nation’s history with N140 billion released and more than 9 million beneficiaries. These include the Trader Moni, Market Moni, Farmers Moni, N-power and Conditional Cash Transfer which have become house hold names due to their acceptance and popularity. On security, the Fulani herdsmen challenge issue has since been addressed by this administration. The PMB administration also needs to be commended for recovering the 17 Local governments taken over by the Boko Haram under the past administration, though more needs to be done. The current administration must also be given credit for fighting corruption with an uncommon zeal. As you read this, no fewer than two former governors who are APC members and many others are cooling their heels in jail for corruption, even as EFCC has recovered several billions in cash and assets. For the first time, looters are coming forward to surrender stolen assets to government. Even the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) is facing corruption charges in court for non declaration of assets, same as president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Similarly, other feats have been recorded in other critical areas within the same period; just as the footprints of the PMB administration is visible in infrastructural development in several tertiary institutions across the country, including IPP projects to power the schools. These and many more are reasons why all Nigerians, especially voters must seize the moment by using their PVCs to ensure that Nigeria remains on track. We must ‘shine’ our eye’s on February 16 in particular by shoving aside those the local and international media agree have a “corruption baggage tied around their waist, and are ready to sell our national assets to their friends as admitted by them. We should remember that corruption put us where we were before now; hence we must in unison queue up behind PMB on Saturday to kill a cankerworm that threatens our future by not allowing the years of the locust to return, the time to re – elect PMB is now.

With what happened in Abeokuta, we are only a stone throw away from violence, as all the indices are palpable. It is up to all citizens, however, to ensure that this does not happen. We owe it a duty too to comport ourselves well as we vote on Saturday, as only one person will emerge winner, we hope too that the loser will concede as soon as possible. The electoral body and security agencies should remain impartial and transparent enough for citizens to see so that whatever outcome will be easily accepted by all. We have seen APC and PDP pulling crowds in most cities they’ve campaigned so far just as we have seen a governor threatening to put election observers from foreign countries in body bags, a regular occurrence with him – he talks before reasoning. A hypocritical complaint of someone whose presidential candidate regularly cavorts with foreigners, and who prefers the company of foreign journalists to local ones. For the people of Ogun State though, giving a red card to Amosun this weekend in the senatorial election will be a good reward for his betrayal. May the best candidate wins on Saturday.

Editorial Commentary The ‘tyrant’ or the ‘thief’

Times Guest Columnist Mohammed Adamu

Democracy is first a choice-driven enterprise before it may be driven by the consideration of merit. People vote ‘choice’ either because they do not even have the capacity to discern ‘merit’ from ‘mediocrity’, or they may vote stark mediocrity even in spite of ‘obvious merit’. If the law allows mediocrity on the ballot, then mediocrity is an option. Democracy is concerned more with the freedom of the majority to choose what it pleases than with the desire of the society to be governed aright. All well and good if in the exercise of the right to freely choose, the majority is lucky to install good government. It is the reason that of the many definitions of democracy, ‘the right even to elect the wrong candidate’ is inclusive. Are we not often confronted with Hobson’s choices on the ballot? Are we not often faced with choices only as good as those ‘between the devil and the deep blue sea’? Or -as the English would say- between a terrifying Scylla and a horrible Charybdis? The law cannot regulate the legitimate choices that the democratic freewill is entitled to make. It chooses what it will. It rejects what it will not choose. Or else the democratic freewill ceases to be what it fundamentally ought to be, namely ‘free. As parliament is the touchstone of democratic freedom and regular election is the veritable proof of that liberty, so is the freewill the touchstone of electoral liberty. That it may be guided by conscience is only a ‘desirable’ function of the freewill, not a ‘necessity’. In fact that the free electoral will acts in repudiation of the dictate of conscience or that it acts of its own whimsical consideration, does not make its decision any less legitimate. The democratic freewill has the right to elect mediocrity and to vote out merit. It can be activated by moral consideration or it may be attracted even by depraved, dissolute concerns. It can elect a bum, a scum bucket or a lollygagger; and it can ignore the able, the capable and the knowledgeable. The ‘freewill’ is as its name suggests, ‘freewilling’. It is either ignorance or the tyranny of so called enlightened opinionation that arrogates the right to inquisition the free electoral will. We cannot make morally repugnant what the law has made a legitimate option. Try as we may, the judgment of which candidate is best or better in a democracy cannot be an objective one. It is forever a subjective one. One man has a right only to recommend his choice to another, and not to inquisition the choice that others make. Nothing underscores the primal place of ‘choice’ and the un-importance of merit than in the words of a cartoonist, Mike Peters, who wondered “When I go into the voting booth, do I vote for the person who is the best President or the slime bucket who will make my life as a cartoonist wonderful?” And it is the reason that ‘democracy’ is called ‘majority rule’: the right of the majority to a ‘way’ -no matter what other ‘way’ the minority would’ve preferred. Thus besides being an expression of the ‘will’ of the people, elections confirm what the majority –advertently or inadvertently- is willing to be governed by. As in our present situation, whether by a ‘stingy, right wing tyrant’ allegedly personified by Buhari or by a profligate, nowing, thieving capitalist represented by Atiku. Democracy, like ‘virtue’ is its own reward. And it is the reason Walter Winchell said that “too many people expect wonders from democracy, when the most wonderful thing is just having it!” Since the law has dared to have them, both –a tyrant and a thief- on the ballot, the law has thus made them, each, a legitimate option! Nor is the right by some to elect one, superior to the right by others, to elect the other. By the way, as there can be benevolent dictators, there can also be benevolent thieves.

At least medieval England’s Robin Hood was. Not that he was right, but he stole from the rich to give to the poor. But then the question arises: ‘did Atiku steal from the rich in the first place? Or did he even steal with the motive of Robin Hood –namely to give to the poor? Or did he –again like Robin Hood- give all that he stole to the poor? When you take unlawfully from the pocket of the commonwealth you are in a sense stealing from the poor -and cannot therefore claim to play the ‘benevolent thief’. You are either a Robin Hood or you are a hooded robber! But is Atiku a thief? For the reason that he has not denied that he did apologize to Obasanjo, yes. Because people do not apologize who are innocent. They do only when they are wrong. But Atiku’s apology, not only was it made to the unharmed party, Obasanjo, it was not preceded by a confession. Pleas everywhere are taken either with the confessional adjective, ‘guilty’ or with the negative, ‘not guilty’! They are not taken with the apologetic: ‘I am sorry’, or with a promissory: ‘I will not do it again’. Equally sins are forgiven with the confessional: ‘I have sinned’ and not with the pledge: ‘I have repented’. The one who says ‘I am sorry’ is no less sinning in the eyes of God, or any less culpable in the eyes of the law, than the one who says ‘I have sinned’ or the one who says ‘I am guilty’? Atiku’s ‘I am sorry’ is definitely no quittance from wrong, it is a clear admittance of ‘guilt’. Reason Obasanjo said ‘although I endorse him, I maintain that Atiku is still a thief’. Obasanjo has discharged and acquitted Atiku not because of his ‘innocence’, but in spite of his guilt. And isn’t that wonderful? That the illusive ‘quality of mercy’ sought by Portia in Shakespeare ‘Merchant of Venice’ should be found not in a heartless Shylock, but rather in the stony heart of a now ‘compassionate’ Obasanjo. Imagine ‘mercy’ not seasoned by ‘justice’, ‘forgiveness’ without ‘confession’; ‘absolution’ without ‘repentance’. But that is not the worst part of it; Obasanjo has not only forgiven Atiku on our behalf without consulting us, he is recommending a felon who once bled us, to our trust again. He wants us to reward an un-confessed criminal with the Presidency simply because the man has said ‘sorry I will not do it again’! Atiku himself has said that he is already filthy-rich enough, he needs not steal our purse again. But if all we say to Atiku is ‘go sin no more’, he should still be in our book of debt. And now Buhari. Stingy? Yes. Rightwing? Yes. But is he a tyrant? They say that a ‘tyrant’ is a ruler unrestricted by law. To the extent that Buhari has said that national security is superior to the rule of law, it cannot be denied that he is guilty as charged, a tyrant. But what manner of tyrant? A tyrant of necessity or a tyrant of gloat? Kings, said Robert Harrick, “seek their subjects’ good, tyrants (seek) their own”. Is Buhari guilty of the ‘despotism’ of kings or of the despotism of tyrants? Yes one of Britain’s Prime Ministers, William Pitt the Younger has said that “Necessity is the….argument of tyrants”, but shouldn’t ‘bad laws’, as the Irish-born British philosopher would say, be truly “the worst sort of tyranny”? What must leaders do who seek the public good but are hamstrung by laws? 19th century’s Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco provides the answer: “If I didn’t act with an iron hand, this would soon be chaos.” One man’s dictator is also another’s revolutionary. Buhari is not a tyrant of necessity. He is a benevolent dictator. He is not a maximum ruler, but is a despot ‘good governance’. Atiku is a thief! But to everyone, his democratic freewill: to vote a tyrant or to vote a thief; to elect the puritan or to elect the cavalier, the spendthrift or the extravagant, the benevolent dictator or the unrepentant rogue!

OUR POSITION Security agencies and forthcoming polls

I

f there is anything reassuring that the schedule February 16 Presidential, National Assembly elections and March 2, 2019 Governorship and Houses of Assemblies elections would be hitch free, it is the assurance given by the military last Thursday that it would be neutral, standing impartial during and after the elections. The assurance is coming towards the end of election campaigns and rallies that have pitched the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to an epic battle that seem to put the populace and the military on the edge. No doubt, allegations of illegal arms importations and the seizure of unlawful police uniform and military accoutrements had heightened the political tension, fueling the erroneous sense of insecurity. This, we believe, reinforced the need for the military to remain neutral in the forthcoming elections. Besides, this year’s general election provides a unique opportunity for the electorate to exercise their inalienable right to choose their representatives and the President who the military must subordinate to in compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended. Military neutrality in an election of this nature therefore will not only enhance its cohesion generally, but place it in a better position and strength to quell crisis in the event of any during the elections. Most importantly, the military remains the unwavering pillar of our strength as a nation which should not be toyed with by political class for personal gains at the expense of our peace and unity. We commend the bold steps taken by the military in alerting the public of its neutrality on the forthcoming general election. We urge the military authorities across the country to strictly carry out the order of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olorinsakin, and arrest any unauthorised persons in uniform on election days. We also urge that investigations into

allegations of illegal importation of arms be thoroughly investigated and culprits brought to book immediately to serve as a deterrent to others who are bent on causing confusion. This is most urgent, particularly, as credible intelligence report indicates that some people are planning to scuttle free and fair election in some parts of the country. Let the warning be obeyed to the letter and spirit of its content such that “the Armed Forces of Nigeria will carry out its constitutional duties with zero tolerance to unprofessional conduct, and let no military personnel fraternise with any political parties and associations. We appeal to service personnel including the police not to allow themselves be manipulated by the ruling party/government or those in opposition. It is important for all staff taking part in the conduct of the election and supportive services to realise that their conduct will affect the credibility of the polls either positively or negatively.

G 22 regroup to support Gov Emmanuel’s re-election in A’Ibom Isaac Job, Uyo

A group of 22 Governorship candidates on the platform of People Democratic Party(PDP) who slugged it out with Governor Udom Emmanuel in 2015 party primaries have returned to declare total support for Emmanuel’s re -election. The group made up of former Nigeria Ambassador to Russia, Barr Assam Assam (SAN), Senator Helen Esuene, Prof. Esu, PST Ita Udo, Dr. Samuel Udonsak, Engr Effiong Usung, Jerome Isangedighe among others, resolved to return Governor Emmanuel in next month governorship election. Addressing a press conference in Uyo yesterday on the topic titled “Never Again Masada” the spokesman for the group and former Commissioner for Youth and Sport in Akwa Ibom, Pastor Ita Udo said the G 22 was born out from 2015 governorship party primaries as aggrieved candidates resolved to form pan Akwa Ibom platform with a mission

to build a detribalized team that will foster justice, equity and good governance. Pastor Ita Udo maintained that the group was committed to towards sustenance of good leadership, peace, security and fundamental right of citizens. He said the conviction of above ideologies encouraged the group to stand firm with Governor Emmanuel to ensure peace and security in the state Using the biblical analogy of the ancient Israel who after death of Christ challenged the Roman Empire and were killed and pursued to the desert where they found fortress at Masada and were destroyed completely. “Never again shall we watch or allow the anti- people vices and destructive tendencies. Never again shall we allow electoral processes to be skewed or coerced. Short News AFRICMIL urges NBET MD/CEO to end victimisation of whistle blowers Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) has called on the MD/CEO of Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, Dr. Marilyn Amobi, to immediately stop the victimization of two whistleblowers, Sambo Abdullahi, Deputy General Manager and Head of Internal Audit, and Waziri Bintube, General Manager and Chief Finance Officer. In a statement signed by Chido Onumah, Coordinator of AFRICMIL, the organisation expressed concern over the management style of the NBET boss which has for long been overshadowed by allegations of fraud, abuse of office and harassment of both management and non-management staff. A high point of the public criticism of Dr. Amobi’s management, the statement said, “is the persistent victimization of two officers – Sambo Abdullahi and Waziri Bintube, for carrying out their duties in accordance with the rules and regulations of public service.” “We are aware that you have stopped the salaries and other entitlements of these officers since December 2017 allegedly for offences including writing petitions and embarking on leave without approval.

Examination malpractice: I didn’t see Sen Ademola Adeleke in exam hall, says witnesses Andrew Orolua, Abuja Two prosecution witnesses who testified before the Federal High Court, Abuja at the trial of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Osun Governorship candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday denied seeing the defendant in the examination hall. Senator Ademola Adeleke and four others are facing trial following their arraignment by Inspector General of Police (IGP) before the court for examination malpractice. Buhari vows to probe $16bn past PDP administrations spent on power projects President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the electorate to give the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) another four years to complete all the ongoing developmental projects and to initiate fresh ones. The president, who made the appeal at the Federal Capital Territory’s Presidential rally of the APC, on Wednesday, said his administration would continue to ensure efficient utilisation of the nation’s scarce resources in the provision of infrastructural facilities across the country. He, therefore, assured citizens that government would continue to use the little resources at its disposal to make life better for them. He said: “We have done a lot to start building the infrastructure – the roads, you know it more than I do; the railway and then power – we are going to get them done. “If you give us the next four years I assure you, you won’t regret it.’’ Buhari also insisted that those involved in the wastage of over 16 billion dollars on power sector without any meaningful

results under the previous administrations would be investigated and anyone found wanting would be prosecuted. Although the president did not mention whose administration spent the money, the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo was in power when the projects were initiated and executed. The House of representative had in 2008 launched investigation into the execution of the projects. Buhari said: “You know there was no power under the previous administrations, and a previous government admitted without anybody asking them, that they spent $16 billion for power. You know more than I do – Where is the power? Where is the money? “My point is on bribery and corruption, which is one of my three areas of focus. Those people who say they spent 16 billion dollars on power, they will account for it. “Yes, we are under a system now. Those who have been given responsibilities, in the three tiers of government; the Federal, States and Local Governments as they are busy, we will ask anti-graft agencies to

investigate and prosecute them. “We have already done a lot of cases, you know it, they came here and bought properties here in Abuja, and they invested outside the country. “We are appealing to different States in Europe and America to please help us recover looted government properties, which we are now putting back to building infrastructure.” The president used the opportunity to seek for votes from Nigerians of voting age, as they go to the polls on Saturday. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, who also spoke at the rally, called on the youth to come out and massively vote for Mr Buhari and other APC candidates in the general election. We are home to vote Atiku, says Diaspora Nigeria

Short News

A South African based organisation, Southgerians, has announced the arrival of thousands of its members and other Nigerians resident in many parts of the world to participate in the forth-coming presidential election slated for this Saturday, saying their coming is purposely to vote for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This is coming, as another group known as Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) stated in Washington today that Nigerians deserve election that is peaceful and credible. The Director of Southgerians, John Metchie, who spoke to some journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on arrival into the country, said no previous election in Nigeria had attracted the interest of the Nigerian Diaspora community like the coming Saturday election, especially that of the president, and attributed it to the realities on ground which he described as pathetic and therefore unacceptable. He said that the huge number of Nigerians returning home for the election is necessitated by their individual and collective concern for the hardship being faced by their relatives back home and the need to play their part in reversing the ugly trend through massive votes for the

The Ishola Balogun- Fulani led All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara state said it has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court on the ruling of the Appeal court, Ilorin division which recognised AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as APC gubernatorial candidate in the state. The State Public Relation Officer of the party, Dr Dele Kayode in a statement said the Tuesday’s court of Appeal’s ruling was in respect of the interlocutory appeal lodged against the order of amendment of the originating summon made by the state High Court. He said the Appeal Court ruling did not affirm the Bolarinwa led executive of the party in the state. Kayode said the appeal had two legs interlocutory and main appeal, and it is awaiting the final judgement on the main appeal. The Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin had on Tuesday upheld the nomination of AbdulRazaq as Kwara APC gubernatorial candidate, setting aside an earlier ruling by the state High Court. The appeal court also held that state High Courts lack powers to entertain any suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

US group seeks peaceful, credible election candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former vice president, Atiku Abubakar “I am just arriving. Just like many others as you can see. My boss, Prof. Isa Odidi is on his way. Thousands of Nigerians are coming home for the election, especially the presidential election. Nigerians living abroad are virtually ashamed of what our dear nation has turned to due to bas leadership. We agree that things were bad in the past, but it has never gone this bad. The current government was voted into office to correct mistakes of the past. If you cannot correct the situation, then leave things the way they were. “How do we explain that the Naira that exchanged one Dollar in 2014 is now N360? How do we explain the unemployment statistics coming from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) with millions of Nigerians out of their jobs within the past four years? What explanation can one give over the worsening security situation as thousands of Nigerians are killed by Boko Haram, now government has added ISIS among the terror groups massing against our people. What about the herdsmen? Why have the herdsmen stopped killing people because election is by the corner? These are questions that are still unanswered,” Metchie said. “Look at how fragmented Nigeria has become.

And those at the helms of affairs pretend that all is well. They carry on as if they are not hearing the cries of ethnic cleansing and economic deprivation against some sections of the country. What is the cause of the fragmentation of Nigeria? The answer is nepotism. You cannot treat some people like second class citizens in their own country of birth and expect things to continue as normal. According to him, Nigeria has thousands of competent hands that can rescue the country if given the opportunity, stating that there was no reason therefore to settle for second eleven when the hands are there “There are thousands of Nigerians living at home, and others, abroad that have all it takes to govern Nigeria well. In a football match, can a good coach settle for second eleven when the first eleven is there? “That is why we are back to vote Atiku and Peter Obi because they have the training, the skills and the competence to govern well. Atiku will reposition the Nigerian economy and bring prosperity to the people. Atiku and Peter are employers of labour with hundreds of thousands of Nigerians on their monthly payroll. These are broadminded gentlemen that would ensure equity and justice in the land which would unite the country,” Metchie concluded.

INEC working more for PDP - Oshiomhole Tom Okpe, Abuja

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working in the interest of the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the Saturday polls. Oshiomhole categorically said that the leadership of “INEC is unfair to APC” by refusing the party fielding elective candidates in Zamfara State while it looked away from the PDP in Kano State where the party did not hold its Primary Election. The ruling party chairman who said all allegations of the PDP are unsubstantiated however pointed that foreign observers are worthy partners but have not come to supervise the country’s electoral processes but

to observe and so, should maintain that statusquo. He also said President Buhari is not a sit tight President but only seeking re-election for second tenure in office which is not against the law. Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in a press conference at his Aso Drive Office in Abuja, Oshiomhole said: “If anything, this INEC has been very unfair to the APC. But we just discovered that we have a responsibility. The fact that we are a governing party imposes on us a certain level of code that you can’t be seen to rubbish every institution, because if we rubbish everything, it would mean that we don’t want election. “INEC believe everything the PDP says. As we speak, there are two Resident Electoral Commissioners who are virtually campaigning line by line with the PDP in the South-south.

“INEC, without giving us any explanation and without any concrete evidence went ahead to say we can’t field candidates in Zamfara, thereby seeking to award, without any context and nullify democracy in Zamfara state. Is that the way your friends behave if they are your friends. “INEC is working more for the PDP, based on evidence I can show. How can they explain that a court of competent jurisdiction gave orders in Zamfara to say this candidate is eligible to contest election and another high court in Abuja also gave a verdict saying APC did not conclude its primaries, but did not give order to INEC. There is no order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Court of Appeal made a pronouncement on this matter today that there was no order from the court in Abuja, but that there was a concrete order from a Zamfara High Court which upheld the primaries that was conducted in the state.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bauchi State, Ibrahim Abdullahi has disclosed that no fewer than 33,972 Permanent Voter Cards have not been collected in Bauchi state. Ibrahim Abdullahi said that, “As at January 10, a total number of 32,972 permanent voter cards are yet to be collected”. According to him, is about ninety percent of the total voter cards received for distribution in Bauchi state. REC Abdullahi said that the commission had recruited all the ad hoc staff needed to for the conduct of the election. He added that the recruitment was strictly based on the policies and guidelines of INEC. According to him, the commission has received all the required nonsensitive materials. The INEC Boss added that the last batch of the materials is being offloaded at the central bank in which representatives of political parties will witness the distribution of the election materials any moment from now.

33 months after, no evidence against me - Shekarau Yakubu Salisu, Kano The former Minister of education and two terms Governor of Kano state, Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau has said that, 33 months after the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) instituted a money laundering case against him, he is yet to be confronted with any evidence. Shekarau made the disclosure on Wednesday in Kano while addressing news men at his Mundubawa Residence during a press conference. Shekarau, who is contesting for Kano Central Senatorial seat under the All Progressive Congress, APC, dismissed any insinuations that the court case against him could affect his senatorial ambition. According to him, the EFCC case against him is a forgone issue as INEC has made it very clear that constitutionally and globally, when you are being accused, you remain innocent until proven guilty. He said those who are conversant with the court case are living witnesses and are aware that after seating for the sixth time, the commission has not been able to establish any substantial evidence against him over his alleged role in the N950 million laundry. “Initially, some people thought because Shekarau is in court he should not contest, but that’s not the case in the face of the law,

Sex-for-marks allegation: AAU suspends ASUU chairman Titus Akhigbe, Benin-City The management of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has suspended the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) AAU branch, Dr. Monday Igbafen. He was suspended over alleged gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threats of sex-for-marks. The suspension order was contained in the University’s News Bulletin, dated February 13, and signed by the Deputy Registrar Information/ Public Relations Officer, Edward Aihevba, titled: “Suspension of Dr. M.L. Ugandan, Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy.” The embattled ASUU Chairman however denied the allegation, saying that the issue at stake is an attempt to cow him. The statement reads in part: “The University community is hereby informed that Dr. M. L. Igbafen, Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy, has been suspended from duty, following his arraignment before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) on allegation of gross misconduct bordering on sexual

harassment and threats of marks for sex. “He had earlier been accused of this offence and an investigative panel set up, found him culpable and indicted. Recently, there was petition by the family of the female student involved asking that Dr. M. L. Igbafen be brought to book, failing which the University management would be reported to ICPC for failure to act. “On receipt of the petition, the University management asked for his comments. His response was found unsatisfactory. He was therefore arraigned before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC)... As due process demands, he has been suspended from the University, pending the determination of the allegation levelled against him. “He is therefore not allowed to participate or be involved in any University duties, activities or functions, except those related to Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) during the period of suspension. In response to a call by our Correspondent, Dr. Igbafen said the allegation was an afterthought, when the University discovered that he could not be compromised. He said: “If you have been monitoring

development in AAU, Ekpoma, you will not be surprised that a paper like that is coming from the University administration. It is the climax of a desperate Vice Chancellor who has so many things to hide, which we will bring to the press. “We have been battling the Vice Chancellor who wants to impose himself on the University. Am doing my job as ASUU Chairman, there have been several attempts to compromise, but I refused, and when they discovered that they are unable to compromise me, the next thing is to resort to blackmail. “Ask the Vice Chancellor, when did this issue of sexual harassment happened. The issue at stake is an attempt to cow the ASUU Chairman. We will address a world press conference on the issue.” Dr. Igbafen however warned against publishing what he called a libellous document. “We want to advise that we need to be extremely careful so that you will not be an accessory to the libellous paper. If you look at that paper with you, you will know that it is a libellous document and we will respond appropriately at the right time and we will collate all the papers that will come out,” he said.

adding, that malfunctioning parts would be replaced without necessary collapse of the entire system and commended the management for the safe airspace in the country. According to the NATCA president, while maintaining professionalism, the association will strive to ensure that customers of NAMA will be given services commensurate with the money stressing that they will do everything possible will be done for the country to retain its category one status. Agoro renewed call for the government to continue retraining and recruitment of Air Traffic Controllers to fill the vacuum created in the system as a result of the retirement of

personnel from the system. On remuneration for air traffic controllers at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria, Agoro lamented the poor allowances package for them stressing that the college was not fair to the ATCs there. According to him, what they earn as allowances were not commensurate with their position “Our controllers in NCAT are not being treated well in the area of allowances” He vowed to take it up with the relevant authorities in order to address the issue, Agoro was elected president of NATCA December 2018 to lead air traffic controllers in Nigeria in the next three years.

Enforcement of Cabotage Act will provide jobs for Nigerians – NIMASA Temitope Adebayo The Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage at the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Gambo Ahmed, has said enforcement of the Cabotage Act is to provide jobs for Nigerians.

The director, who represented NIMASA Director-General, Dakuku Peterside, at the investiture of Dr Bashir Jamoh as President of Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria, spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, clarified that the agency was not clamping down on vessels, but rather “keying them” to ensure compliance. According to him, we have an army of

trained, but unemployed seafarers that are supposed to be gainfully employed, while the foreign vessels plying Nigerian waters engage foreign sailors. “The Cabotage Act has been there, the agency before now has embarked on sensitisation campaign to shippers and widow periods given, so with the end of the awareness period, enforcement is next”,

Ahmed said. He said that on-board placement of the seafarers was just one aspect of the Cabotage law meant to create jobs for Nigerians in the sector. Ahmed said that other maritime countries had other forms of indigenous protective measure and Nigeria should not be an exception.

TUC insists on better representation of members in labour issues Joy Obakeye The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has come out to reiterate the need to review the law establishing the National Law Advisory Council (NLAC) in order for it to accommodate the trade union, considering the recent sidelining at the tripartite committee, over the minimum wage review. TUC, at a media briefing in Lagos, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, stated that “the union will no longer tolerate the violation of the trade union rights of its members to representation, collective bargaining and be consulted on labour matters in the country”. In a communique jointly signed by its President, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama and Secretary General, Comrade Musa Ozigi, NEC resolved that it is important for the voices of its member’s to be felt in issues relating to a trade union in the country. “The NEC-in-session reiterates that the law establishing National Law Advisory Council (NLAC) should be reviewed to include major Stakeholders, e.g TUC. The NEC-in-session warns that TUC will no longer tolerate the violation of the trade union rights of its members to representation, collective bargaining and be consulted on labour matters in the country”. TUC further commended the progress thus recorded on the minimum wage, urging the National Assembly to push further to ensure the speedy implementation of the new wage. “The NEC-in-session commended the House of Representatives for approving N30,000.00 as minimum wage in the country. It, therefore, calls on the Upper Chamber, the Senate to do the same without any further delay”. Also, the NEC lamented at the proposed increase in the cost of International Passport and Drivers License, asking that the concerned bodies return to the status quo, and formulating policies that will be beneficial to the masses. “The NEC-in-session frowns at the proposed increase of international passport and Drivers license by the Federal Government. It therefore calls on the Federal Government to maintain the status quo and formulate policies that will be more beneficial to the masses”.

My plans for Delta South in Senate - Uduaghan Stories by Patrick Okohue The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2019 Delta South senatorial candidate, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has said he wants to represent Delta South at the Senate in 2019 because of his desire to pursue quality legislation that will lead to the development of the district and the Niger Delta region. Releasing his manifesto in Warri, Delta State recently, Uduaghan, who is the immediatepast governor of Delta State said he hinged his manifesto on four pillars which he called the JEW+P (Jobs, Empowerment, Wealth plus Peace). In his words: “I salute you, my good people of Delta South Senatorial District. I seek

your mandate and support to represent you at the Senate. “Over the years, I was actively part of and at a time, head of a team that managed the development of Delta State. In those years the Delta State government through its various organs embarked on projects and programs in the areas of peace, human capital and infrastructure development that will lead to job creation and poverty alleviation. In doing this, we faced a lot of constraints. These constraints were mainly in the areas of nonexistent extant laws to control the various processes that were put in place to fast-track the development. “Efforts to bring peace and security to the area were mainly through engagements at various levels and the use of force. Both methods have led to a temporary

Group petitions INEC Chairman over alleged partisanship A group of young Nigerians has written to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Yakubu Mahmood, cautioning him against exhibiting bias against Atiku Abubakar, the leading opposition candidate, at Saturday’s presidential election. In the letter dated February 11, 2019 and copied to the United Nations, United States embassy, High Commission of the United Kingdom and European Delegation in Nigeria, The United Nigeria Group (TUNG) called Professor Mahmood’s attention to credible allegations that had been circulating online, pointing out his personal bias in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari, and describing ways in which the INEC chairman stands to gain if the elections go in the incumbent’s favour. “Because these allegations are so weighty, it becomes necessary that we bring them to your notice so you may be aware and then abstain from any acts that may eventually corroborate them,” Dr Emenena Bright, who signed the letter on behalf of the group said. “We are optimistic that you will stay on the side of the citizens to ensure an improvement on the 2015 elections, that our democracy may not only be sustained, but shall be deepened.” The letter quoted copiously from a Twitter thread authored by public affairs commentator, Prof Farooq Kperogi, and titled “ATIKU’S FIERCEST FOE ISN’T BUHARI, IT’S THE INEC CHAIRMAN”. “At this point, Buhari isn’t a threat to Atiku, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu

is actually Atiku’s most potent threat now,” Kperogi wrote. He went on to give reasons for his convictions, relating a conversation he had with a close friend of Mahmood’s brother. “He confided in me today that the electoral boss has a deepseated animus toward Atiku and has made many nasty, unkind remarks about Atiku in private. That, in and of itself, is not the problem. We are all entitled to our personal predispositions and biases as long as they don’t interfere with our judgement on occasions that invite our neutrality and fair mindedness. “However, the same source told me the INEC Chairman has a profound personal investment in APC’s electoral successes, like Maurice Iwu had of PDP’s victories. He said the INEC Chairman told his friend that he was going to hand victory to APC in Osun governorship election even though PDP clearly and handily won it.” Kperogi concluded his lengthy piece by conceding that INEC has taken many admirable actions in the past few months that point to some degree of independence. He, however, expressed concern that these actions may simply be “windowdressing to conceal plans for the grand presidential electoral heist on February 16”. The United Nigeria Group made it clear in the letter to the INEC chairman that the group was not going to swallow Kperogi’s allegations hook, line and sinker—but felt it necessary to bring the allegations to Mahmood’s attention and also caution him in case there might be any element of truth in them.

peaceful environment. “However, to attain a level of job creation and alleviation of poverty in the region that will lead to permanent peace, prosperity and a sense of well-being, there must be laws enacted to fast-track the processes of industrialisation, wealth creation and a peaceful environment. These are the laws I seek your mandate to bring up at the Senate. “My mission therefore at the Senate will be focused on four pillars which I call the JEW+P, which means Jobs, Empowerment, Wealth plus Peace.” He added that he will work on poverty alleviation through the creation of Job opportunities for the people of Delta South at all levels, noting that creation of industrial empowerment for the people of Delta South through the promotion and encouragement of indigenous participation, as well as, the use of homegrown

technology in the oil industry, will be one of his agendas. On wealth creation, Uduaghan said he will champion the creation of enduring wealth for the people of Delta South through the promotion of community partownership of major and minor oil companies and promotion of enduring peace in Delta South through the involvement of local and community people in security and peacekeeping. “Do you know why the Jews prosper and flourish anywhere they are? They patronise their own. We can build a new Delta South Senatorial district by creating an environment that employs our talents and utilises our God-given resources to flourish as a people. “As a former Secretary to the Delta State Government and a former two-term Executive Governor of the state, and also as I be Delta pikin, I know and understand your pains and your

needs. You need room to express your God-given talents. As governor, there were a lot of things I wanted to do to open up opportunities and bring economic development to you that I could not do because I was constrained by the laws of our country. This was what fired my desire to represent you at the Senate. “We come from a senatorial district that is massively endowed, and all we need to do is to use our imagination, and with the cooperation of our brothers and sisters from other parts of Nigeria, we will drive a New Vision for the people of Delta South Senatorial District. A New Vision that fully explores and exploits our strengths and endowments. “The unemployment level in Delta South Senatorial District is embarrassing, given that the region is the economic hub of Delta State hosting up to 72% of high impact industries, especially in the oil and gas sector. As a result of policy and security challenges which were beyond the state government, many of these industries were either shutdown or were operating way below capacity; therefore, many of the oil service companies in particular that used to give employment to a lot of our people, especially the youth were either shutdown or forced to relocate. “For example, the major oil companies for so many years did not prospect for new oil fields and this caused a major disaster in the employment, economic and social life of the people of Delta South Senatorial District. “I believe that focused legislative interventions in the Senate can deal with these challenges and launch Delta South Senatorial District into a phase of development and expansion that will meet the demands of our people. “Delta South Senatorial District can be galvanised and developed into the industrial base of the state by taking advantage of the oil and gas and the maritime sectors to create jobs for men, women and youths,” he said.

TETFund strengthens ties with US to scale up scholarship programme Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja In its bid to expand its scholarship programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has strengthened its ties with the United States government to accommodate the increasing number of participants seeking to further studies abroad. The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro, who made this disclosure while playing host to the Cultural Affairs Officer of the United States in Nigeria, Mr. Sterling Tilley, noted that scholars on this partnership will enjoy the full status of TETFund, Fulbright Scholars as well as other opportunities available after the completion of their programmes. In a statement by Director, Public Affairs, TETFund, Dr. Jacob Alada, Bogoro said: ‘’The Fund is looking forward to expanding its scholarship programme to accommodate the increasing number of Academic staff

yearning for opportunities for further studies. ‘’The Management of the Fund is ready for such partnership and would facilitate arrangements to ensure it is concretized within the shortest possible time. The US Government wants to partner with TETFund through its Fulbright Programme because of the credible Scholarship Programme the Fund runs. ‘’It should be noted that scholars on this partnership will enjoy the full status of both TETFund and Fulbright Scholars and other opportunities available after the completion of their programmes. ‘’The Fulbright Programme is sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, under world-wide policy guidelines established by the Fulbright Board. Earlier, Tilley, who was accompanied to the Fund by Miss Bella Anne Ndubuisi, the Cultural Affairs Specialist of the Embassy, stated that the aim of the visit was to strengthen the already existing relationship between the United States Embassy and the Fund through

partnership aimed at building capacity of Academics in Nigerian Universities. In particular, the Cultural Affairs Officer stated that the US Government and the Fund could partner through its Fulbright’s Scholarship Programme and the TETFund Academic Staff Scholarship programme whereby Academic staff of Nigeria’s Universities are supported by both the TETFund and US Government to undertake their Masters and PhD Programmes in the US at a cost to be shared. ‘’Furthermore, TETFund Scholars who are undertaking their PhD’s in Science-related fields in Nigeria could also benefit by being jointly sponsored by the Fund and the US Government to undertake their Benchwork in Universities and Research Centers or Institutes in the US. ‘’This process which started in 2015 with Prof. Bogoro if concluded would further justify the confidence the US Government has on the Fund as one of the foremost Agencies of Government in Nigeria’’, Tilley added.

EKSU partners TOPCOED, matriculates first set of students As Ag. VC assures students of quality education

Esther Taiwo Ekiti State University (EKSU) in affiliation with Topmost College of Education (TOPCOED0, Ipaja/ Agbado, Lagos, has matriculated first set of students for Sandwich degree programmes in the institution. The event which was held at TOPCOED in Lagos had the acting Vice-Chancellor of EKSU, Prof. Olubunmi Ajayi, the Registrar, Barr. Akin Arogundade among others in attendance. Speaking at the ceremony, the Ag. ViceChancellor, KSU, Prof. Olubunmi Ajayi, said the vision and mission of the university is to train and produce men and women of honour, equipped with good education, strong character, high level of morality and integrity. “That is why the institution had been blessed with high-caliber, world class academics and professionals who have distinguished themselves in their areas of specialization,” he stated. Ajayi added that this is the class of responsible group that they are aspiring to belong. She however said it takes moral uprightness, academic alertness, self-discipline and mental capacity to resist peer negative influence to reach the graduation goal. “I hereby assure all matriculants that the university will give you a quality education deserving of any reputable tertiary institution in

the country and with that, committed and hardworking students would complete his or her course at the record time stipulated for the programme.” The Professor of Chemistry however enjoined them to shun anti-social behaviours and all other acts of misdemeanour such as cultism, examination malpractices and any other vices that could jeopardise their success and future endeavours in life. “You should know that the award of Bachelor Degree is subject to having satisfied the university in both character and learning, therefore acquaint yourselves with rules and regulations, study hard and shun anti-social activities,” she reiterated. Earlier in her speech, the Provost of TOPCOED, Dr. Olufunmilayo Odunayo, said Topmost had established very cordial relationship with other academic bodies in the past, but the debut leap to EKSU has been seen as a major breakthrough and shall remain indelible in her memory for long. “Let me add that some other universities had made advances in the past but on our drawing board EKSU was ranked a good model in terms of quality in the academic industry and which EKSU has been maintaining consistently since inception till now,” he said. Odunayo explained further that Topmost as a group is a giant in the field of academics and this has enabled her to establish unfettered relationship with renowned and very reliable organisations.

His words: “Today apart from this new relationship with EKSU, we maintain balanced relationship with premier bodies like National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN, Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, National Business and Technical Examinations Board, NABTEB, Industrial Training Fund, ITF, and a host of other bodies saddled with the responsibilities of promoting education.” On how the institution works, the provost said the college operates an open-door policy. “Although, students /staff unionism is highly discouraged, to avoid disruption in our academic calendar, we have set up the students’ representative council whose responsibility is to be a forum to check and balance the system. “This maiden set has been identified as a force to reckon with and our belief is that the confidence reposed in them shall not be misplaced either now or in the future.” Congratulating the matriculating students, Odunayo urged them to see the degree programme as a life-time opportunity that comes once in a blue moon. “You are therefore enjoined to strive hard and reciprocate the gesture of your benefactors by operating within the ambits of the law because success does not come without sacrifice,” Odunayo said.

Lagos State University (LASU) recently honoured two of its principal officers - the immediate past Chief Medical Director, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja Prof. David Oke and the new Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo. Welcoming guests at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lanrewaju Fagbohun, stated emphatically that LASU that was despised in the past has now become a sought after. He said the two CMDs are great people who have played a great role in the life of project LASU and the new CMD will play his role. He told Prof. Oke that wherever he is, he should continue to support LASU and LASU will continue to connect with him while thanking him for all his contributions to the university. The Vice Chancellor described the new CMD, Prof. Fabamwo, as cerebral, a man well connected and asked him to use his wealth of experience to achieve greatness for LASUTH. He said the road may be rough but believes he would surmount all the challenges. In his response, the former CMD, Prof. Oke described the Vice Chancellor as a brother and colleague. He also called him a gentle man and thanked him for the honour which he said took him by a surprise. He also appreciated the other principal officers - the Provost, LASUCOM team and LASUTH. And to his wife of 30 years, he said a big thank you for tolerating him this far. To the new CMD, Prof. Fabamwo, the LASU VC confessed that he prayed that he should be the new CMD because of his carriage, mien, Queen’s English. He added that as at now, there is no person better for the job than Prof. Fabamwo. “I am confident that he would make a success of the appointment”, he said. The new CMD thanked those who believed in him in taking the job as well as the confidence the VC has in him. Fabamwo stated that he knows the nooks and crannies of LASUTH very well, stressing that it is a place he has traversed for 32 years. He applauded the giant strides of the former CMD, Prof. Oke made at LASUTH and said he hopes to match and surpass the successes he made at the place. He thanked all for taking time out to grace the event and described the team left behind by the former CMD as an excellent one and believe they will still carry on the good job. Speaking further, he told the gathering that he has assured the Provost, LASUCOM that between LASUTH and LASUCOM, it would be a seamless effort, saying the two will work like a Siamese twins. “At this point in time, we have a progressive Vice Chancellor - Professor ‘Lanre Fagbohun in- charge and I can see that in the near future good tidings are coming”, he said. He remarked that the hallmark of any great man is to balance work life, family and social life, saying this helps to see life from a good perspective.

Nobel Peace Price 2019: OPM founder nominated for award

The General Overseer of OPM has been unanimously nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 by numerous civil society groups, non-governmental organisations, top notch think tanks, environmental activists, peace forums and human/gender rights advocates under the aegis of the Global of Peace Congress, Reporters for Accountable Government, Teachers Without Borders, Green Peace Initiative, Gender Rights Agenda, Shelter for All Agenda, Centre for Nuclear Disarmament on account of his tremendous achievements in advancing the cause of national, regional and global peace, unity, stability and progress as an unparalleled missioner, visioner, philanthropist, emancipator, mentor, motivator and empowerer of hundreds of thousands of men, women, youths and children throughout the African continent, Europe, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean regions. In nominating Dr. Chinyere for price, the organisers took into consideration, the OPM Foundation launched by Apostle Jesus OPM in 2010 has bravely engaged in the rehabilitation, empowerment, training and alms giving of tens of thousands of Nigerians and some of the foundation achievements include Free Computer Training Centre at Elele Prisons; Free

Tailoring and Computer Centre at Rumuyi, Emohua LGA, Rivers State; OPM Free Restaurant in Port Harcourt, Rivers State; Free Primary & Nursery School at Ohanku, Abia state; Free ICT base Nursery/Primary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State; Construction of Housing Estate in Rumoukwurusho, Rumuigbo and Aluu communities in Rivers state; Construction of 2 bedroom flats for numerous widows; MultiSkill Acquisition Centre to trains Nigerians in oil & gas, carpentry, tailoring, rig welding, free driving school etc; free lunch, free computer training, free textbooks & fully equipped laboratory for students in Port Harcourt, provision of free water borehole for Nkukpuwa community in Abia State and feeding & ministering to thousands of homeless people in Houston Texas amongst other benevolent endeavours. Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere’s OPM Foundation is renowned for providing numerous philanthropic, charitable and benevolent services to the less privileged and vulnerable members of society particularly the poor, the infirm, the disabled, the widows and orphans irrespective of sectional, linguistic or cultural affiliation. Fittingly, after winning souls for the Almighty God, Apostle Chinyere’s legendary foundation focuses on the physical and

mental wellbeing of the converted by providing free education, free restaurants (feeding), free boutiques, free skills acquisition training and free medical services for millions of citizens across the African continent, Asia, Latin America and beyond. Indeed as the fastest growing Pentecostal mission in Nigeria, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere’s OPM is dedicated to transforming the totality of the human person in order to ensure that they are productive to the society as well as beneficial to themselves and their families. For instance, the skills acquisition scheme is intended to make the beneficiaries learned in certain skills like hairdressing, tailoring, bead making, aquaculture, poultry, animal husbandry e.t.c that would boost their income generation and make them self sufficient in all material particulars. This skills acquisition program has trained hundreds of thousands of individuals thus raising the socio-economic indices of the community countries and continents at large. Another crucial plank of the OPM Foundation’s charitable activities is the ‘Operation 45,000 Free Schools’ project design to train over 45,000 less privileged children in standard schools constructed by Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere throughout the country, a feat unprecedented in the history of the nation. Indeed Apostle

Chibuzor has mandate the massive construction of standard primary and secondary schools in all the geopolitical zones of the country to train pupils and students irrespective of religious affiliation. The beneficiaries will be provided with free textbooks, free uniforms and even be privileged to go on excursions within and outside the country. The most striking example of Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere pioneering track record is his landmark establishment of the first all Girls Technical College in Africa which is totally free of tuition, accommodation, or any other fees for that matter. It is a reflection of the compassionate Dr, Jesus OPM’s unvarnished commitment to the education of the girl child and the eradication of illiteracy and all forms of oppressive practices against the women folk . The establishment of the All Girls Technical College is the first of its kind in the continent as there exist boys technical colleges and co-educational technical colleges but never a girls only technical college making Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere’s girls technical college the numero uno in Africa. Apostle Chinyere Chibuzor’s OPM Foundation has, without doubt, fed, housed, clothed, educated, empowered and delivered multitudes of souls running into millions and thus has furthered the

Chinyere course of world peace, unity, stability and prosperity to merit his historic nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize to join other notable awardees like Pope John Paul, Nelson Mandela, Barrack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King amongst others, it is unarguable that the missionary, empowerment upliftment and educational exertions and interventions of the famed Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere has raised the socio-economic, life expectancy, income generation and infant/ maternal survival rates of the Second and Third world countries in a manner that the various governments of those societies could

not hope to achieve due to the utmost sincerity, consistency, steadfastness, creativity, altruism and unvarnished kindness, benevolence and compassion of this incomparable Man of God and his epoch marking OPM Foundation. In this regard, the Global Civil Society Coalition earnestly urges the Board of Trustees of the Nobel Prize Foundation to heed the urgent and unimpeachable call of millions of the faithful brethren all over the world to bestow the 2019 Nobel Prize for Peace to Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, Dr. Jesus of OPM. As the saying goes, he, who the cap fits, let him wear it. To God be the glory.

Russia, Iran, Turkey to hold fourth round of Syria talks in Sochi

Yemeni pro-government forces take part in military operations outside Hodeidah

Rebuking Trump, House votes to end US involvement in Yemen The House of Representative passed a resolution on Wednesday that would end US support for the Saudi-UAE war in Yemen, a strong rebuke to US President Donald Trump. The measure, which was passed by 241-177 vote, will now go to the Senate where it enjoys broad support among Democrats and key Republicans. The Senate passed a similar measure in December, but that bill died when Congress adjourned for the year. “Nearly all of the bombs that have fallen say the same thing, `Made in the United States of America’, “ Democratic Representative Jim McGovern said ahead of Wednesday’s vote. “They fall on weddings. They fall on hospitals and on homes. They fall on funerals, refugee camps and school buses,” he added. “It is an aerial bombing campaign that hammers civilians every single day.” Two amendments were added to the resolution before the final vote. The first allows for continued intelligence sharing with Saudi Arabia, and the second condemns anti-Semitism and declares it’s the policy of the US to oppose trade boycotts against allies such as Israel. The bill invokes the 1973 War Powers Act, which gave Congress the ability to end US involvement in a conflict if there was no formal declaration of war. If the bill passes the Senate, it faces a likely veto by Trump, who avoided any mention of Yemen in his State of the Union address last week and whose administration has escalated tensions with Iran. US politicians backing the resolution would need two-thirds support in both chambers of Congress in order to overturn a presidential veto. But House Republicans are backing the administration’s position on the conflict in Yemen, which is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. “If this resolution passes, we are emboldening Iran to

continue its nefarious adventures in the region,” Republican Representative Lee Zeldin said prior to the vote. The Trump administration maintains that because US military support to Saudi Arabia has been limited to aerial refueling, intelligence sharing and logistics support, the president is acting within his authority under the 1976 Arms Export Control Act and to help an ally, according to a February 11 statement by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB). “Unfortunately, the resolution is misguided because United States armed forces are currently not engaged in hostilities in Yemen and it’s not clear what the resolution would accomplish,” Republican Congressman Tom Cole said. “The president is operating well within his rights.” The OMB added that “in addition to [the bill’s] erroneous premise, the joint resolution would harm bilateral relationships in the region, negatively affect our ability to prevent the spread of violent extremist organisations - such as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS in Yemen.” There has been renewed focus on the US role in Yemen after the October murder of Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi. After offering several contradictory statements, the Saudi kingdom confirmed that its agents killed the writer inside its consulate in Istanbul, but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) was involved despite reports that the CIA concluded the de facto Saudi leader ordered the murder. “I don’t think it’s a done deal that Trump is going to veto it. It’s an uphill battle,” said Representative Ro Khanna, a California Democrat who sponsored the anti-war resolution. Khanna is seeking support from Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican ally of Trump who was outraged by the killing of Khashoggi. Support from Graham could help tip the balance in favour

of the bill in the Senate, Khanna told Al Jazeera. “I am going to make the case to him, given his strong comments on Khashoggi and moral disapproval of the Saudi regime, that this is one of the ways we can collectively signal our moral approbation, our moral opprobrium on the Saudis,” Khanna added. Most House Republicans voted against Wednesday’s resolution and instead urged passage of legislation providing military aid to Israel, cooperation with Jordan, sanctions on Syria and an anti-BDS bill. The Middle East security policy bill, which does not include language on Yemen, passed the Senate earlier this month. Democrats in the House have planned committee hearings on the Senate bill. The US suspended in-flight aerial refueling for Saudi and UAE combat jets in November 2018. The OMB February 11 statement said the Trump administration is supporting “diplomatic negotiations to end the conflict and promote humanitarian access, mitigate civilian casualties, enhance efforts to recover United States hostages in Yemen and defeat terrorists who seek to harm the United States.” More than 10,000 civilians have been killed during the war in Yemen, according to the United Nations, though rights groups estimate the total number of deaths is much higher. The country, which has suffered an outbreak of cholera, is also on the brink of famine. According to UN data, 18 million Yemeni civilians face potential famine with nearly three million women and children “acutely malnourished.” Representatives of Yemen’s warring parties met earlier this month on a ship in the Red Sea to discuss a stalled truce agreement that would allow humanitarian aid to flow through the port of Hodeidah. “This is going to put huge pressure on the Saudi’s to come to the peace table,” Khanna said.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will host a trilateral summit with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts in the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi. Thursday’s meeting between Putin, Iran’s Hassan Rouhani and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan will focus on the long-term settlement of the Syrian crisis, the Kremlin said in a statement on Monday. But the three leaders will also discuss projects and coordination on the international arena. On the sidelines of the summit, the trio will hold individual meetings, according to the Kremlin. The summit is the fourth of its kind since Putin, Rouhani and Erdogan first met in Sochi in 2017. The three states refer to themselves as “guarantor countries”, claiming they fight for securing peace in Syria. In December 2016, they brokered a ceasefire, setting up the so-called “de-escalation zones” in the war-torn country. The Syria talks run in parallel to the Geneva talks organised by the United Nations. But Russia distrusts the negotiations organised by the West. On Wednesday, Russia stayed away from a Middle East conference organised by the United States in Poland, a NATO member. The Russian foreign ministry said in comments carried by the Russian news agency Interfax that Moscow views with concern “US attempts to impose unilateral geopolitical interests through initiatives presented as opinions of the entire international community”. Iran also criticised the US for seeking the withdrawal of the Iranian military out of Syria. “The conspiracy of major states like the US will not affect our policies,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in

comments carried by Russian state news agency, TASS. Thursday’s Sochi talks were preceded by a meeting between Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar in the Turkish capital Ankara on Monday. Shoigu and Akar said they needed to coordinate their next moves on Syria, solving a few remaining issues ahead of Thursday’s summit. Russia and Turkey share a strong opposition to the US military presence in Syria and are coordinating ahead of the planned withdrawal of Washington’s troops. Iran and Russia are close allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey supports the opposition. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of Russia’s foreign ministry, said last week that Russia demanded Turkey do more to tackle rebel fighters in Syria’s Idlib province and fulfil promises it made as part of a deal with Moscow last year. Turkey and Russia brokered a deal in September to create a demilitarised zone in the northwest Idlib region that would be evacuated of all heavy weapons and opposition fighters. The deal helped avert a government assault on the area, the last major bastion of Assad’s opponents. Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Zakharova said the situation there was rapidly deteriorating and that rebels were trying to seize control of the entire de-escalation zone. “Given the extremely difficult situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone, we expect our Turkish partners to activate their efforts to ultimately turn the tide and to fully carry out the obligations they took upon themselves,” Zakharova was quoted as saying by the foreign ministry.

Venezuela’s Guaido says he’s working to restore ties with Israel Juan Guaido, Venezuela’s selfdeclared president, has said he’s working to restore ties with Israel a decade after Venezuela severed relations with it in solidarity with the Palestinians. Guaido told Israel Hayom newspaper on Tuesday: “I am very happy to report that the process of stabilising relations with Israel is at its height.” “First we’ll restore the relations, then we’ll announce the appointment of an ambassador to Israel, and we very much hope an envoy will come here from Israel,” he said. Guaido, who is backed by the United States, also said he was weighing whether to relocate Venezuela’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “I will declare the resumption of ties and the site of the embassy at the proper time,” he said. The status of Jerusalem is one of the biggest obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem recognised as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, including the eastern sector that it annexed in 1967 in violation of international law. ‘Mossad are trying to kill me’ Last month, Israel joined the US, the UK and a host of European countries in recognising Guaido as the interim president of Venezuela. However, President Nicolas Maduro - who won elections in 2018 with 67.7 percent of the vote - retains the support of state institutions including the military and Russia and China.

Guaido’s embassy announcement could mark a sharp shift in Venezuelan foreign policy, which has traditionally backed a two-state solution to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. Under Hugo Chavez, Maduro’s predecessor, Venezuela cut ties with Israel over its actions in the 2008-2009 war in Gaza. The 22-day land, naval and air bombardment saw more than 1,400 Palestinians killed, thousands injured, and massive damage to infrastructure, including homes, factories and schools. At a rally in 2010, Chavez also alleged that Israel was “financing the Venezuelan opposition” against him. “There are even groups of Israeli terrorists, of the Mossad, who are after me trying to kill me,” he said. Guaido has vowed that the opposition, which he has regalvanised after several years of infighting, will keep protesting against Maduro until new presidential elections could be held. The opposition has been holding regular protests and on Tuesday held a vigil demanding that aid being blocked by Maduro be let in. Maduro’s government insists aid is not needed and that the US is using it as an excuse to get its hands on Venezuela’s abundant oil reserves, replicating the US’s military interventions in Iraq and Libya. In a separate development on Tuesday, Russia said it was ready to help resolve Venezuela’s crisis but warned the US against intervening in Caracas’s internal affairs.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp charged for comments about referee in West Ham draw

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been charged by the Football Association for comments he made about the referee after his side’s draw with West Ham. Klopp said Kevin Friend’s performance was affected by the decision to allow Sadio Mane’s goal, which should have been ruled out for offside. The FA says Klopp has

been charged as the comments “questioned the integrity of the referee and/or implied bias”. He has until 18:00 GMT on Monday, 18 February to respond to the charge. The Premier League match at London Stadium on 4 February finished 1-1. Mane put Liverpool ahead in the first half but James Milner was

offside in the build-up. Michail Antonio equalised for West Ham before the break but Klopp said Friend “did not want to open the gap any more” in the second period. “I heard our goal was offside, I’m pretty sure the ref knew that,” Klopp told BBC Sport. “In 50-50 situations it was always a free-kick for the other team, which

g23

was hard and did not make life easy.” Speaking to Sky Sports, the German added: “As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don’t want to open the gap any more. “Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn’t during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside.”

Flying Eagles hopes of eighth U20 AFCON title dashed after losing to Mali on penalties The Flying Eagles will not win an eighth U20 AFCON crown in Niger after they lost 4-3 on penalties to Mali in today’s semifinal after both teams were tied on 1-1 after extratime. Valentine Uzornwafor and Okon Aniekeme lost their penalties in the shootout for Mali to go through to only their second final of this U20 championship. It was a sweet revenge for the Malians who had lost to Nigeria in the semifinal of the U20 WAFU

Cup in Togo in December. The Flying Eagles will now play the losers’ final on Saturday against the losers of the other semifinal between Senegal and South Africa. Mali opened scoring in the 78th minute when Mali sliced through the Flying Eagles defence to release Mamadou Troare who fired past a stranded goalkeeper Olawale Oremade. However, Nigeria drew level four minutes from time when substitute Pascal Durugbor

thundered home a loose ball inside the box past Mali goalkeeper Koita. The Flying Eagles started brightly, before Mali gradually warmed up into the game to make it more of a contest. The speed and skills of the Nigerians were canceled out by the physicality of the biggerlooking Malians. There were no real chances by either side in extratime, before the lottery of the penalty shootout.

Efe Ambrose: Super Eagles always in my heart Coach: Police Force volleyball team will Derby County defender Efe Ambrose has not played for the Super Eagles since Nigeria’s 1-0 loss away to Egypt in March 2016, but the player has revealed that he still keeps up to tab with the national team and calls some players to continuously encourage and support them. Nigerian defender Ambrose has not played for the Super Eagles since Nigeria’s 1-0 loss away to Egypt in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in March 2016. Since then, the defender has not been called up but he insists he still has a lot to offer to the Super Eagles. “I love Super Eagles and will always support my country whenever they play. I love what the coaching crew are doing with the team and all I have to do is work hard to earn a recall.” stated Ambrose. “ I call some of the players regularly, I know what’s happening with the team, I call some of the players to wish them well and pray for them” “Am a Nigerian and I love my country. I will always support the green and white as it is my fatherland and am proud to be a Nigerian player who played for Nigeria”, concluded Ambrose.

The rock-solid defender was a regular in the Super Eagles under former gaffer Sunday Oliseh before the manager resigned in February 2016. He was invited by the then interim boss Samson Siasia for the doubleheader against Egypt in March 2016 for the 2017 AFCON qualifiers. Ambrose, earlier today completed his move to Derby County after having his contract terminated by Hibernian, has 51 caps for the Super Eagles and was part of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title for Nigeria.

Taiwo Oladipupo, the coach of Nigeria Police Force (NPF) volleyball club, on Wednesday said his team would work hard to win the upcoming 2019 Nigeria Volleyball Premier League. Oladipupo told journalists in Abuja that they would strive to improve upon their 2018 performance where they emerged third. “We have a complete team, because our players are officers of the Nigeria Police. But we will need to recruit more players to strengthen the team for the league. “So, we will work hard to win the 2019 league. We

want to lift the trophy, and that is our target. We all share the same dream as a team,’’ he said. Oladipupo also told NAN that the InspectorGeneral of Police and the Chairman of Nigeria Police Volleyball Club would support the team to actualise its dream of winning the 2019 league. “They always encourage us whenever we participate in any competition. “They support the team with the necessary things it needs morally and financially, which always boost and strengthen the team for a good performance by the end of the competition,” he said.

U-23 AFCON: Imama Amapakabo calls up 33 players ahead Libya clash

Kylian Mbappe: PSG show there’s nothing to fear without Neymar Kylian Mbappe said Paris SaintGermain showed they need not be afraid of being without Neymar or Edinson Cavani as the French club won 2-0 at Manchester United in their Champions League last 16, first leg on Tuesday. “We need to stop with the scare stories. People need to stop being afraid. Of course Neymar is hugely important and Cavani is fundamental to us, but football is played on the pitch and we showed that today,” Mbappe told RMC Sport. The World Cup-winning forward scored PSG’s second goal on the hour at Old Trafford after Presnel Kimpembe’s 53rd-minute opener as Thomas Tuchel’s team took firm control of the tie before the second leg next month. It was an outstanding performance from PSG in the absence of the injured Neymar and Cavani — the world’s most expensive player for one, as well as the French champions’ all-

work hard to win 2019 league

time top scorer. In their absence PSG still succeeded in inflicting a first defeat on United since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their interim manager. “In the second half we came out with the best intentions because we knew they wanted to step up the rhythm and especially get a goal at home,” added Mbappe, whose goal was his 23rd of the season in all competitions. “We are happy, but it’s only half-time in the tie and we need to continue preparing well, because I think in the last 20 minutes we dropped off a bit physically. “We have three weeks now to make sure we are ready for the return and ensure we qualify.” Coach Tuchel said his team improved as the game went on, while the hosts suffered after seeing both Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial go off injured.

Head Coach of the national U23 team, Imama Amapakabo, has invited 33 players to camp ahead of next month’s U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (U-23 AFCON) qualifying fixture against Libya. Amapakabo, the former Enugu Rangers manager who will be assisted by Kennedy Boboye (Assistant Coach), Fidelis Ilechukwu (Assistant Coach) and Etta Egbe (Goalkeepers’ Trainer) listed nine defenders, 10 midfielders and 10 forwards for the assignment. Tunisia will stage the first leg of the U-23 AFCON qualifier as the Libyans still cannot host international matches in their country due to the civil unrest. The game will hold between March 20 – 22 in Tunis, with the return leg in Nigeria billed for the 25th of March. The invited players resumed camping in Abuja on Wednesday. Nigeria is the defending champion of the U-23 AFCON . The U-23 Eagles defeated Algeria in the final of the second edition of the championship staged by

Senegal in December 2015. That triumph earned the Olympic Eagles a ticket to the Men’s Football Tournament of the Rio 2016 Olympics, where they won the bronze medal – Nigeria’s only medal at the Games. Egypt will host the 3rd U-23 AFCON from 8th – 22nd November 2019.
