‘One chance’ robbers devise new method in FCT Use POS to rob unsuspecting victims
Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja The activities of robbers popularly known as “One chance” in the Federal Capital Territory is assuming a frightening dimension. The deadly gang who now operate during the day and night have added another dimension to their enterprise by moving around with a Point of Sale (POS) transaction machine. They now target the SIM cards of their victims, alongside ATM cards. It has been discovered that, with the SIM card, they can access their victim’s bank verification number (BVN) and have total access to other accounts linked to it. Though the police say it is decreasing due to several measures being put in place against it, residents and victims told The Daily Times that ‘One Chance’ robbery style is actually on the increase. It is usually carried out in commercial vehicles, where criminals pose as passengers only to turn against other passengers in transit.
Mr. Jude Agbo, a resident of Nyanya, a satellite town in the FCT, told our correspondent that he was returning from his office at Maitama Extension around 11:00pm after the day’s job. He boarded a cab at Mpape junction to go home, but immediately after the car took off, the man that sat beside him removed a gun, pointed at him and asked him to cooperate with them. He said: “They collected all I had on me. As if that was not enough, they took my ATM card, drove to a bank around the area and requested for my pin with the gun still pointing at me. “After I gave them the pin, they confirmed to be sure after which they pushed me off the car on the very lonely road. Before the day break, they withdrew N300,000 from my account. It is indeed an experience I will never forget”. Another incident involved Alfred Uma who was returning to Abuja from Lokoja. He alighted from the popular Utako market where he boarded a taxi to Wuse Zone 5 having no inkling that he boarded a CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

vehicle operated by thieves. He said mid-way into their journey, just after Sky memorial the robbers announced their mission. “The two-man gang asked everyone in the cab to obey their orders or get hurt. “To my utmost shock, these gang had a POS on them. Those of us with ATM cards were asked to transfer money using the POS. We had no choice but to obey because of the dangerous weapons they were carrying”, Uma said. Residents say they are no longer safe and it is really disturbing because it keeps happening every day. The ugly development has brought safety and security issues to the front burner amongst Abuja residents. A reporter who was waiting for a taxi at the Federal secretariat also fell a victim of this deadly gang. According to the reporter simply identified as Alex, as soon as he boarded the cab, he observed that the driver took him through an unfamiliar route. “It didn’t occur to me that
he had a bad motive because I thought he was avoiding traffic only for him to stop on a lonely road not far from AYA, pretending he wanted to take a tool in the boot to check a fault in the cab. “Before I could say driver ‘hurry up’, he came into the cab with one other man from God knows where who pointed a dagger at me, dispossessed me of my laptop and everything I had on me, then they threw me out of the cab and zoomed off. It was terrible”. Another ‘One Chance’ incident involved a middleaged woman who came out from a bank along Ahmadu Bello Way, Garki after withdrawing money. She boarded an unpainted Volkswagen Golf cab unknowing that four other passengers already seated in the cab were members of the driver’s gang. Luck, however, ran out on the driver and his gang when a taxi sighted the Volkswagen car and discreetly followed the cab behind having sensed that the mission of the four men in the cab when they picked up the victim was suspicious. While the criminal and
his gang were busy robbing their victim, the taxi driver behind rammed his car into theirs thereby forcing them to stop. That was after they had snatched N57, 000 cash from the woman’s handbag. The other members of the gang escaped leaving the driver to his fate. The shouts for help by the woman drew the attention of passersby who pounced on the driver and subjected him to serious beating. He was lynched by a mob. Many of the red municipal buses that linked the city centre to the suburbs have since been decommissioned and are now wasting at the Abuja Municipal Transport Company park along Kubwa Expressway. As a result, with the chaotic public transportation need between the city centre and satellite towns, private vehicles have become the only alternative for people to reach their destinations, and also pose the greatest risks. Most residents (especially those that make use of commercial transportation) have either had encounters or known someone that had an encounter with the criminals.
Army investigates conduct of troops during polls Continued from page 1 the investigative committee is headed by Maj. Gen. T.A. Gagariga with Brig. Gen. J.M. Ali, Brig. Gen. G.O. Adeshina, Brig. Gen. M. A. Obari, Col. A.T. Bitiyong, Col. A. Tanko and Col. W.A. Bakare as members and Lt. Col. Ebuk will serve as secretary. He said in a press release that the committee is “to investigate all allegations of misconduct against the NA during the just concluded general elections. The committee is to submit its report not later than 31st of March, 2019.” The committee, which has already commenced action, was inaugurated by the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General Kay Isiyaku, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, and admonished to carry out their duties objectively, fairly and transparently in line with its
terms of reference. According to Col. Musa, the committee’s terms of reference centered on thoroughly investigating the activities, actions and/or inactions of NA personnel in all the states that alleged one infraction, wrongdoing or the other. “The committee is also to collate and thoroughly analyze all reports to determine the veracity of the allegations, including the alleged assassination attempt on the Rivers State governor and the circumstances that led to the shooting to death of Lt. Kurmi as well as that leading to serious injuries to an officer and some soldiers in the state. “The committee is further mandated to visit all states where issues have been raised about the conduct of NA during and after the elections and also interact with Civil Society Organisations, sister security agencies and state
governors with claims against the army,” he added. It would be recalled that Lt. Gen Buratai had at many fora, consistently (both in words and actions) soundly indicated that under his watch, army personnel must remain apolitical, respect human rights and abide by the rule of law in all its official engagements within or outside Nigeria and in or out of conflict situation. Troops were deployed for the elections under Operation Safe Conduct that was set up to provide support to the police and other security agencies to ensure hitch free and successful elections in the country. Chairman of the committee, Major General T.A .Gagariga assured the army chief and all Nigerians of the committee’s commitment, resolve and determination to objectively and professionally address the major issues as contained in the committee’s terms of reference.

Forfeiture of N2.4bn: Supreme Court rules against Patience Jonathan Adrew Orolua, Abuja The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by Patience Jonathan, wife of former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, seeking to upturn the interim forfeiture order by a Federal High Court, Lagos placed on the sum of N2.4 billion linked to her. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had traced the said sum to her and alleged that it was a proceed of illegal activities. The N2.4 billion, according to the EFCC was surreptitiously kept in the bank account of La Wari Furniture and Baths Limited, domiciled with Eco Bank Plc.
Justice Mojisola Olaterogun had in 2017 ordered the interim forfeiture of the money and held that anyone interested in it should appear before the court to show cause why it should not be finally forfeited to the federal government. Dissatisfied with the ruling, thr former First Lady had approached the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, seeking to upturn the ruling of the lower court. However, ruling on the appeal on January 12, 2018, the appellate court, in a lead judgement read by Justice Mojeed Owoade, rather upheld the interim forfeiture order. Not satisfied with the ruling of the appellate court, Dame
Jonathan, through her counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, again filed an appeal challenging the ruling before the Supreme Court. However, the five-member panel of Supreme Court justices have now again in a unanimous ruling, delivered on Friday, March 15, 2019, upheld the interim forfeiture order of the N2.4 billion. It would be recalled that a fivemember panel of Supreme Court justices, had on Friday, March 8, 2019, in a unanimous judgement, also dismissed Mrs. Jonathan’s appeal against the interim forfeiture order of a Federal High Court, Lagos, for another $8.4 million traced to her by the EFCC and believed to be proceeds of illegal activities.

How APC won Zamfara elections in 24 hours – Gov. Yari
Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State has attributed the successes recorded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the February 23 and March 9 general elections in the state despite the party’s crisis to “divine intervention’’. Yari disclosed this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC was allowed to field candidates for all the elections in the state only a week before the first day of elections (February 23) when a Court of Appeal in Sokoto, Sokoto State, reversed an earlier decision of a lower court, which had banned the party from the elections. The Zamfara State Collation Officer, Kabir Bala of the Ahmadu Bello (ABU) Zaria, had announced that the APC Presidential candidate, President Buhari, won the February 23 presidential election in the state with 438,682 votes while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, scored 125,423 votes. Bala also disclosed that the APC had won the three senatorial seats and the seven seats in the House of Representatives from the state in the February 23 presidential and parliamentary elections. He said the APC governorship candidate won the state governorship election with 534,541 to defeat Bello Muhammad Mutawalle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 189,452 while the APC also won all the 24 seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly. Governor Yari, who spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday, said he was happy with the outcome of the elections, saying that it was God that gave this political victory to the APC in the state. He said: “You know the turmoil that Zamfara elections put on Nigeria, disagreements upon disagreements, from the party to court and then to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which disagreed. ”Then, we went back to court and finally under 24 hours, we were cleared and we were back on the ballot box. “Only God has done this and given us
the victory. “I am very happy with the outcome of the elections. I also want to appreciate my people, despite the fact that some people felt I was carried away by the activities at the centre, insinuating I abandoned the seat, especially with the security problem, but the people are aware of what the administration has been doing and they appreciate it. “Despite the daily attacks, the security agencies were up and doing and their presence in the state was well appreciated by the people. “They also appreciated the efforts of Mr President which took us to where we are. Like I said only God could have done it.’’ The governor also disclosed that he had succeeded in reconciling all the aggrieved APC aspirants in the state. He said his past experience as party chairman in the state, member, House of Representatives and governor for eight years had helped him to restore peace and tranquility within the governing APC in the state. “In my state, there were only seven or eight people contesting for the governorship position and I have said it that if I could preside over primaries where 18 people contested and succeeded, why can’t I manage eight, nine or 10 in my state? “I have been on ground since 1999 to date and I know the system and how it works. I have been party secretary, party chairman, House of Representative and a two-term Governor, is with this experience that I was able to manage. “Unfortunately, there were a lot of misunderstanding between the party in the state and the national body but in the end we ended in the court and the court gave the verdict and INEC compiled. “Though, it came late, if you are with the grassroots definitely everything must work well. The people appreciated what we have been doing and when it came to voting, they voted wisely,’’ he added. Yari, whose tenure as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum would expire by May 29, expressed the hope that the forum would remain united and work in tandem with the Federal Government’s agenda.
Sugar’s murder: ADP protests, gives DSS, Police ultimatum Tom Okpe, Abuja
While the nation awaits the rescheduled inconclusive election in some states fixed for March 23 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has protested the murder of its prominent member, Temitope Olatoye, (also known as Sugar) in Oyo State during the Governorship and the State House of Assembly election last Saturday, asking the Inspector General of Police and the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS) to unravel the killers within 48 hours. Olatoye was reportedly shot at a close range on Saturday evening, March 9, 2019, and later died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University College Hospital, Ibadan,
following the bullet wounds he sustained on the head by suspected political opponents in Lalupon area of Ibadan, Oyo State. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, National Chairman and Presidential candidate of the party, Engr. Yusuf Yabaji Sani, described the late lawmaker as an astute and principled politician, saying that despite the overtures by some political parties to defect, the late lawmaker stuck to the ADP principles and remained loyal to the party. He said: “We call on the Inspector General of Police, Director General DSS and other relevant security agencies to within the next forty eight hours order a thorough investigation and bring to book the perpetrators of this dastardly political act. “The ADP is exceedingly
worried that Sugar who had won his Senatorial elections convincingly and later upturned was reportedly attacked by suspected thugs of a rival politician in his Lagelu/ Akinyele Federal Constituency of Oyo State. “We are confident of justice in this premeditated day light murder as we rely on the promises made by the President Muhammadu Buhari before the elections that all perpetrators of election violence will be made to face the full wrath of the law. “The ADP joins Sugar’s grieving aged mother, family members, friends, political associates, millions of supporters and the rest of humanity to denounce the gruesome murder of this philanthropist par excellence, family man, peace maker, popular politician exceedingly loved by his people who had
continuously elected him at every election he contested from the state House of Assembly to the Federal House of Representative where he was a serving member until his last outing when he again, was elected to represent his constituency as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”. Engr. Yabàji said the party is proud that the late Sugar remained an apostle of the ADP ideal of providing credible alternative leadership, ideas, philosophical framework and development-oriented policies that has been spoken of in the last one year. “Hon Sugar’s death was one in many others perpetrated by desperate politicians for selfish and ill- motivated interests. These condemnable acts of killings and the impunity, with which they are carried out have appalled Nigerians and
members of the international election observers, who have also denounced the killings and irregularities that characterised the elections, especially the March 9 Governorship and state House of Assembly elections. “The violence of the 2019 elections has once again proved that some political actors in Nigeria have imbibed this dangerous do-or- die politics, which has continued to bring death and destruction of property in every election cycle. The ADP is even more grieved that the security agencies that promised adequate security before, during and after the polls, appeared to have failed in their duties. “The ADP has it on good authority that elements of some favoured political parties had the backing of the security forces, while they perpetrated violence and irregularities during the polls”, he stated.

Similarly, the state government has accused the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just concluded governorship election in the state, Alhaji Sani Abubakar Danladi as the brain behind the crisis that erupted in Jalingo, the state capital since his declaration as the governor-elect. The state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Simon Dogara, who made the allegation this Friday during a press conference in Jalingo against the APC candidate, said that several lives were lost in the orgy of violence that erupted in the state. He said miscreants suspected to be APC youth attacked people who came out in their numbers to celebrate the PDP’s victory, disclosing that the dangerous dimension to the ugly incident
was the religious colouration the crisis has turned into. Referring to the APC governorship candidate in the state, Dogara said that “it is disheartening that a man who is aspiring to a high position of leadership of the state will resort to religious bigotry to achieve his ambition.” While thanking the larger section of the people for refusing to cooperate with him to cause more tension and damage to lives and properties, the commissioner informed that peace has gradually returned to Jalingo. He maintained that Governor Ishaku appreciates the contributions of all the good people of the state in achieving peace. INEC panel on Rivers concludes work The fact-finding panel constituted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to look into the conduct of the last governorship and state assembly elections in Rivers state has concluded its assignment. Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi told journalists in response to media enquiries that the panel which is headed by Prof. Anthonia Simbine would submit its report to the commission for further action “The Rivers Fact Finding
Committee is back and will submit its report to the commission which will study it and decide on the next line of action,” he said on Friday. Sources within the commission said that the committee whose deadline lapsed since Wednesday, could not submit its report the following day as the commission spent all day presenting
certificates of return to over 400 federal lawmakers. Following reports of widespread violence and disruption of elections in the Rivers state during the governorship and state assembly elections, INEC had announced the suspension of all electoral processes. While the suspension was indefinite, the commission also launched a probe of the entire processes and its fact-finding committee was to report back within 48 hours. The deadline ended Tuesday.
PDP asks INEC to declare Imo North senatorial result Tunde Opalana, Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to direct the immediate announcement of the already collated results of the February 23 Imo North Senatorial District election, as well as the March 9 re - run poll, in which the PDP candidate, Ndubueze Patrick is in the clear lead. The party cautioned that the continuous delay in announcing the final result, after returns have been established at the polling units, wards and local government levels is already heightening tension in the state. The party claimed that the results have been moved to INEC headquarters in Abuja following the harassment of INEC officials in Imo state by agents of the losing All Progressives Congress (APC) and Action Alliance (AA). Stating the party’s position in a statement on Friday, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said from the collated results in the February 23 elections, the PDP won in all the local governments in Imo North before polls in two local governments, Isiala Mbano and Ehime Mbano were cancelled and scheduled for a re - run. “Already, from the results declared, the PDP led in Okigwe, Onuimo, Obowo and Ihite/Uboma Local Government Areas with 21, 254 votes ahead of APC and AA which scored 12, 756 and 12, 236 votes respectively. “At the March 9 re - run elections, when the AA and the APC realized that the PDP was winning, they resorted to mutilation and alteration of results, particularly with the collaboration of collation officers in Ehime Mbano, before the intervention of the state resident electoral commissioner, who called for proper scrutiny of documents following protests by the people,” he said .

PDP warns INEC against cancelling Short News Delta runs free education at basic, declared results in Bauchi secondary levels - Gov’s aide Tunde Opalana, Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sternly cautioned the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, against attempts by his commission to tamper with and further cancel already tallied and declared results in 14 local governments in the Bauchi state governorship election. The PDP warned that with the charged atmosphere in state and the level of awareness attained by the people, any attempt by anybody to tamper with the already announced results will attract serious consequences. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, said the PDP already has full information of plots by certain known top ranking officials of INEC, who have been bribed with huge sums of money by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to widen the scope of result cancellation beyond Tafawa Balewa to 14 more local government areas and hike the number of cancelled votes from 70, 000 to 184, 555.
To achieve this, he alleged that INEC has been instructed by the APC to cancel already declared results in 230 polling units in 15 council areas in the state, cause confusion and pave the way for the APC to manipulate the March 23 supplementary elections. The party said upon realizing that the PDP and its candidate, Senator Bala Mohammed, are inevitably coasting to victory, being that Tafawa Balewa is home to the PDP, the APC is instructing INEC to cancel elections in more local governments where it plans to manipulate the process and allocate fictitious results for the APC at the March 23 polls. It insisted that such a wicked plot cannot stand, as the people of Bauchi state have fully rallied themselves for a firm resistance. “Our party is already in possession of a leaked document from the Bauchi INEC office, which exposed details of this wicked plot against the people of Bauchi state. “This plot further justifies our stance that even the cancellation of Tafawa Balewa results was orchestrated by the APC and INEC in the ignoble bid to forcefully rob the people of Bauchi state of their choice of the PDP candidate, Senator Bala Mohammed, as their governor.
“It is public knowledge that by the results delivered at the polling units, Sen. Bala Mohammed was already leading with over 4, 000 votes after results of 19 LGs were collated and announced. “With Tafawa Balewa LG where the PDP scored 40, 000 valid votes against the APC’s 29, 000, it is clear that our party won the election with about 15, 000 votes only for the results of the Tafawa Balewa to be cancelled for no just cause by INEC,” he said. The PDP urged Nigerians to note that the result for Tafawa Balewa was cancelled by the state Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Kyari, who unilaterally ruled that there was no result for the council area even when the Collation Officer, Mrs. Dominion Anosike, had informed the commission that there was no incident of cancellation, violence or electoral malpractices at both the polling unit and ward levels. “Though the PDP vehemently rejected the cancellation of Tafawa Balewa, it stands with the people of Bauchi state in their determination to go to the supplementary election on March 23 and reinforce its candidate’s victory in Tafawa Balewa LG.
Nosa Akenzua, Asaba The Delta state government has reacted to an online viral video where a pupil was reported to have been sent out of school for lack of school fees. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Charles Aniagwu in a statement in Asaba on Friday, noted that it was wrong to have put the blame on the shoulders of the state government as public schools in the state are completely free from tuition fees. The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a virile video online of a little girl purportedly from Delta state where she alleged that she was driven from school because her parents were unable to pay her school fees. “We have also watched the video and read several comments on the matter where mischief makers tried to put culpability on the state government. While we empathize with the little girl and her parents over her ordeal, it is important to state that the state government runs free education at both primary and secondary school levels in all public schools in the state and therefore, it is impossible to assume that the little girl was sent home from a public school in the state.

Some of the incoming lawmakers had on Thursday specifically, cautioned President Buhari and the APC leadership against working at cross-purposes to avoid another tussle that would alter the party’s zoning formula. The presidential aide said Buhari will remain neutral and allow the elected lawmakers carry out their constitutional responsibilities. He said that “the principle of President Muhammadu Buhari is that each arm of government should function according to what the constitution says which is that every person in government should do the right thing. “He (Buhari) will not go beyond what the constitution allows him and every arm of government should stick to its constitutional responsibilities.” Enang urged the federal lawmakers to give priority to certain critical legislations like the 2019 Appropriation Bill, New Minimum Wage Bill, the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and

He said that “the budget of the 64 different federal government owned agencies are still pending before the national parliament. “Unless the budgets of the different agencies are considered and passed, we still have a lot to lose in terms of opportunities for employment in those ministries and some capital projects which would have increased government spending or the spending of the various agencies and parastatals. “The executive is ready with all the system to come in and defend the budget. We have in advance, worked with the committee on appropriation to determine a time table for the defense of their budgets. “We have informed all the ministers, heads of departments, agencies and the ministries to be on the alert so that immediately the bill is committed to the committee on appropriation, we will upon invitation, appear before them.”

Benue youth allege INEC under pressure to subvert guber re-run
National President of Benue Youth Forum, Comrade Terrence Kuanum has raised the alarm that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was under intense pressure from high quarters to subvert the coming Benue state governorship re-run election in favour of the APC. He warned that any external interference to skew the process in favour of any party would be resisted by Benue youth and advised those plotting to compel the state resident electoral commissioner to announce the APC as winner of the re –run poll against the wishes of the majority of the people of the state, to also make available body bags to evacuate Benue youths who are prepared to die for a course they believe in. Comrade Kuanum, who spoke in Makurdi, said that Benue youth
have it on good authority that the state REC, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda had allegedly come under intense pressure from the APC to subvert the re-run election in the state and announce the APC candidate as winner. “The plan is for INEC to announce the APC candidate winner of the election while PDP heads to the tribunal to seek justice which will not be served. The APC and its cotravelers are pressuring INEC to destroy Benue state for their own greed even when it is obvious that the re-run is nothing, but an academic exercise because Gov. Samuel Ortom has a lead margin of over 80, 000 votes. “Moreover, we also have it on record that in the 179 polling units where elections were cancelled which are known PDP strongholds,
with registered voter strength of 121, 019, not more than 70, 000 of the electorate have Permanent Voters’ Cards, even at that, there is no way voter turnout in these places can hit 40 per cent. “We’re confident of victory; PDP Benue youth have said and we will reiterate that nobody, would impose a governor on us. We will freely choose our governor and he is the one who has continued to stand in defense of the people and that is why we came out en masse a week ago to vote him to show gratitude and we will do it again on March 23.” When contacted, the INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Benue state, Mr. Emma Okpe said “it is not true that we are under pressure to announce anybody winner of the March 23 re-run, these are mere rumours in the town.”

Abducted Lebanese worker killed in Kano A kidnapped Lebanese construction engineer has been found dead in the bush in Kano state, a police spokesman said Friday. His body was found by locals near Yansango village on the outskirts of Kano City said police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna. “The body of the expatriate engineer was discovered by villagers in the bush and the police were notified,” he told AFP, adding that “he was confirmed dead at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where the body was taken for autopsy.” Haruna, who said an investigation was under way, did not say whether the kidnappers had made any ransom demand. The engineer was supervising work on the site at the time. In April last year, gunmen seized a German engineer in Kano after killing his police escort, days after a Syrian businessman was killed by gunmen who abducted his teenage son. BMO commends Buhari’s foresight as non-oil exports rises The Buhari Media Organization has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over what it described as his foresight following the rise of non-oil export rise by 15 per cent. The group said the rise in foreign exchange earnings from non-oil export is a vindication of Buhari’s foresight in diversifying the Nigerian economy. According to the BMO, the expansion in production of agricultural commodities for export and mining of non-oil minerals is pulling in more foreign exchange for Africa’s biggest economy. This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke respectively in Abuja on Friday, stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) latest figures on earnings from non-oil and electricity exports which increased by 15 per cent to $1,034.59 million in Q4 2018 is a clear manifestation of the wisdom in Buhari’s
economic diversification efforts. “CBN statistics which indicate a favourable provisional balance of payments for Q4 2018 with a surplus of $2.80billion is a proof that Nigeria’s effort to reduce unnecessary imports and increase exports is working to our national advantage. “We expect Nigerians to appreciate that it is a significant economic achievement for the country’s current account balance to have improved from a deficit of $1,544.41 million in Q3 2018 to a surplus of $1,104.57 million in Q4 2018. “This achievement did not happen on its own, but a result of sound economic management by the administration and its agencies that are working in harmony to achieve the vision of President Buhari to reset the economy, sustain and deepen the status of our economy as the largest on the African continent,” the BMO
stated. The pro-Buhari group specifically, praised the CBN for its diligent management of the country’s foreign exchange chest and turning the nation’s financial account balance with assets of $2,327.91 million in the period under review against net financial liabilities of $4,615.17 million recorded in the preceding period. “The impact of restriction on access to foreign exchange at official rates for the frivolous importation of certain goods has had a significant impact in checking leakages of the country’s foreign exchange reserves by increasing the surplus in the goods account. “It is significant to note that the CBN says surplus in the goods account increased significantly to $6.794 billion in Q4 2018 from surpluses of $3.76 billion in the preceding quarter and $5.473 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017,” the statement added.
A group under the aegis of Plateau Citizens has declared that they will resist plans by the Plateau state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Malam Halilu Pai, to take the state into another round of crisis, accusing him of beating the drums of war. The group said as concerned citizens, Plateau youths were questioning INEC over its neutrality in the electoral process, asserting that majority of the crises that have engulfed the state were the outcome of the insensitivity of the electoral body to conduct free, fair and credible elections. Speaking at a press conference in Jos, the Plateau state capital, the group’s Director, Mr. Joseph Bot, also called for the resignation of the state INEC boss. “We hereby call on Malam Halilu Pai to resign honorably as the lives of Nigerian citizens surpass the interest of one man; our second prayer is a call for the cancellation of election in Jos North, Shendam, Wase, Kanam, Qua’an-Pan, Langtang South and Mikang Local Government Areas,” he said. The body accused the resident electoral commissioner of illegally distributing sensitive electoral materials, including thumb- printed ballot papers in favour of a particular political party. “These sensitive materials were found in the hands of reputable political personalities days before the general elections. Other sins of the electoral umpire range from the deployment of military troops who disrupted the election by harassing and brutally assaulting the electorate and youth corps members. “Use of unclaimed PVCs in the possession of INEC while carrying out secret accreditation at various corners. Exchange of smart card reader machines in some polling units and collation centers among others,” the group alleged.

Supreme Court okays Rev. King to die by hanging
The Supreme Court has okayed the convicted General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Rev. King to die by hanging. In a unanimous judgment Friday afternoon, a seven-man panel of justices of the apex court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, upheld the death sentence that was earlier handed to Ezeugo by the Lagos state High Court. Consequently, the court in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, dismissed the appeal filed by the convicted clergyman. Justice Ngwuta declared that “the facts of the case could have been lifted from a horror film and having resolved all the 12 issues Ezeugo raised in his appeal, this appeal has no merit. The judgement of the court of appeal is hereby affirmed. “The prison sentence that was earlier handed to the appellant is no longer relevant in view of the death sentence passed on him.” It will be recalled that Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging on January 11, 2007, for the alleged
murder of his church member, Ann Uzoh. He was subsequently arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder. The charge against him was instituted at the instance of the Lagos state Directorate of Public Prosecutions. During the trial, the prosecution had argued that the convict poured petrol on the diseased, Uzor and five others. Uzoh died on August 2, 2006, exactly 11 days after the incident. In her judgment, trial Justice Joseph Oyewole, who is now a justice of the Court of Appeal, Calabar, said there was sufficient evidence linking the accused person to the commission of the crime. Consequently, she convicted and sentenced Ezeugo to 20 years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder and death by hanging for murder. But, dissatisfied with the judgment, Ezeugo filed an appeal at Appel Court, Lagos and in his notice of appeal dated January 16, 2007, prayed the appellate court to set aside the judgment of the lower court. Aside 16 grounds of appeal he raised
through his lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, he was subsequently granted leave to argue an additional 16 grounds based an amended notice of appeal filed on June 15, 2008. Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident, insisting that the deceased, Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries. The three-man panel of justices of the appellate court, in a lead judgment that was delivered by Justice Fatimo Akinbami, dismissed Ezeugo’s appeal and upheld the high court’s verdict. The other members of the appellate court panel that equally concurred with the lower court’s verdict were Justices Amina Augie and Ibrahim Saulawa. Determined to save his life, Rev. Ezeugo lodged an appeal before the Supreme Court. However, his appeal was challenged by the Lagos state government which urged the apex court to dismiss it and uphold the concurrent verdicts of the two lower courts.

Bandits kill 17 in fresh attack on Kaduna village
At least 17 people, including civilian militia members were killed in clashes with cattle thieves in a community in Kaduna state, the police confirmed on Friday. According to the police, armed bandits attacked Jan Ruwa Village in Birnin Gwari district of Kaduna state and stole livestock, leading to clashes with a local militia force. Kaduna state police spokesman Yakubu Sabo said the bandits took away many cows, but that
the vigilante members fought the bandits in an attempt to reclaim the stolen herd. “In the process, the bodies of 15 vigilantes and two others were recovered,” he added in a statement. The Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna state has in recent years become notorious for cattle rustling and kidnapping for ransom, forcing many local people to flee for their homes. Gangs are known to roam
on motorbikes on the hunt for victims, often crossing over into neighbouring Zamfara state. Kidnap victims are often released within days if the ransom is paid, but residents say they can be killed if no money is forthcoming and their bodies dumped in the bush. Amnesty International last year said communities in Zamfara state were “at the mercy” of armed bandits who had killed at least 371 people in the first six months of 2018.

I can play all roles but I cannot be nude - Actress Amada Ebeye Amada Ebeye, who is presently on the set of her new TV series, It’s a Crazy World, is ready to do anything to protect her son and their bond. In this interview with MUTIAT ALLI, the Delta State-born filmmaker shares her worries, challenges that come with film production in Nigeria, child adoption and lots more. Enjoy… It’s A Crazy World, why did you decide to opt for that name? I decided to go with the name because of the content of what I’m shooting. It’s a comedy series. It has lots of competition for women. It has lots of struggles. It’s funny and at same time too much to learn from, touching every aspects of live. At first, I wanted to call it The Wives, when I created the story but lots of movies with similar names out there. I wrote the script but I have writers who write for me. However, there are still some episodes I wrote. What’s the general message you want people to learn from the story? We are tackling issue which has to do with the social media. We are trying to make people see the vices of social media. It’s unarguable that it has made people rich; it has changed the lives of some people. It has connected the world together. But then they are some other bad sides of social media. It has destroyed a lot of people that don’t know how to use it. People get intimidated and depressed over the fine photos they see on social media. So It’s A Crazy World has been put in the screen for you to see what happens on social media, behind those lovely, smiling photos. Did you have any personal encounter with some of the vices of Social media? I’m on social media all the time. I’m an actress. I’m an extremely private person, so to smile and take photos to put on social media is a lot of work. So, I understand what’s it’s like to stay relevant on those new platforms. How many hours do you spend on social media? To be very honest, in a day I can spend 20-hours on social media. What’s your favorite social media? Instagram. I like Twitter but I won’t choose it over Instagram. How did you pick your cast for the Series? I developed the Treatment in 2017 when I was in film school in Canada. I just want people that respect in the industry to be in my movie. Over there I thought to myself, who could pull off the role of Don in the movie and I know it would be Bob-Manuel Udokwu. Because he is very good at what he does. He is one of my best actors. When it was time to look for the wives, I know Grace Ama would always play the Kemi role well. Then other ones I picked also fit into their roles perfectly. How easy was it for you to get them to be on your set, all together? It was Okay. We thank God for instagram. Most of them, I sent them Direct Messages (DM) and they responded. I got their contacts, chatted them up. Bob-Manuel was the only person I wouldn’t get on Instagram because he is not on Social media. So, I got his contact, called him up, spoke with him and he came on board. He didn’t give me any stress. How has the chemistry being on set, it’s obviously going to be a long shoot?
It has been amazing. Talking about working with these professionals, it has been brilliant. Because they just know what to do. For them, acting is just inborn. They take their lines so smoothly, because they have been in the game for so long. They put themselves into the character and deliver perfectly. From the look of this beautiful location in Victoria Garden City (VGC), we could tell you have spent huge amount of money to achieve all these, can you put a figure to it? Thank God you know. Everything I’ve spent and still spending is close to 30million naira and over. Are you doing this alone or collaborating with some investors? I couldn’t do this alone. I had to sell the idea because I had to go from budget to budget. I started with N10m, then 15, then 25, now I know it might surpass N35m. I pray I make my money back and also be able to pay my investors. They trusted me with their money, so I don’t want to disappoint them. What’s giving you the confident that you will get your money back? I’m very spiritual. I tell God the little one I have, please use it to bless my hustle. I put in my money, my sweat, so I believe God will bless me abundantly. When is it ready for people to enjoy? June. It would be ready for all. Where do you plan to air it? Right now my target is African Magic Showcase, family and another. Why did you decide to go into production? I told myself, I don’t just want to be an actress because no matter how you act, you can’t be richer than your producer. So, I went back to rethink. So, I am now I’m an actress, producer and filmmaker. Well, its not over for me for anything. I just like following my life, steps by steps. I do plan my life, but sometimes you see yourself doing what you had planned never to do again. But right now, I have the right to tell my own stories the way I want it to be. I now have my own world, to do my own stories. I still like Asaba, I am not saying Never to anything. That’s still where they money are made. What are the challenges of being a first time TV series producer? The challenge is budgeting. The light situation. We are shooting for 30 days. When I went to make inquiries to rent cameras and lights, the amount I was told was so shocking. I had to start buying my own equipment to add to the ones I already had. Then feeding all the cast and crew for that number of days, it not an easy one. They are my responsibility till the shoot is done. What of your son, how do you create time for him? My son is not here. My mom went to Canada to stay with him. So, my family is always there to support me.
Amada Ebeye What would you say is the proudest thing you have done for yourself? My son. That’s the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my life. That’s the only thing I can’t regret. The only person I can’t trade for anything in the world. I can trade this production if the worse comes to worst (laughs). But my son, never! What would you regard as an addicted bad habit? Well, I’ll say going late for meetings or appointment. Then I have Sweet tooth. I love chocolate, and other sweet stuffs. I have to struggle to keep fit. What is that one thing you can’t wait to tell your son? I tell him I love him every day. But on a deeper level, I can’t wait to tell him that no matter what he does, he would get married someday but he should always have a place in his heart for me. I pray every day that my daughter-in-law would be good to me. I just don’t want anyone to turn my son away from me. Are you scared that one day, a lady would come and take your son away? I get scared of that all the time. Then people tell me that, maybe I should try have another child. Because it’s always my son all the time.
So when are you having more kids? I’m not a regular everyday girl. My dreams and aspirations are different. What other women might be dreaming about, is not same thing I would want to become. When it comes to giving birth, I really don’t think I want all my children to come from me. I would wait to see what happens in the nearest future. I want to adopt. Right from when I was much younger, I dreamed of the day I’d be able to say this; that I want to adopt kids. I look at those kids that don’t have parents and I keep wondering why we have to keep giving birth, when there are already lots of kids out there to take care of. Adoption is my priority than giving birth to my biological children. What kind of role do you play at this stage of your career? I play all roles but I cannot be nude. Do you have regrets, looking back at some roles you had played in the beginning of your career? There are lots of them I can count. Then everyone wanted to be popular and pay bills. You just pick up any roles given to you. That’s why I tell people don’t let this industry pressurize you to do what you don’t want to do. They have been movies that I had done in the past, but if you bring the scripts to me now, I’ll turn them down out rightly.

Nigerian rapper Mz Kizz joins other African Hip-Hop female artistes to celebrate International Women’s Day As the world prepared itself to honour women across the globe for International Women’s Day, Africa’s most innovative beer brand, Castle Lite, embarked on a journey of celebrating women across the continent by facilitating the biggest ever female Hip-Hop collaboration from Africa. The aim was to showcase the power when women stand together and fortify unity through music, so the brand partnered with an ensemble of five (5) heavyweight female rappers and boldly remixed Hip Hop royalty Queen Latifah’s popular 90’s anthem, U.N.I.T.Y. South Africa, Tanzania and Nigeria were collectively united to do the remix with the likes of Mz Kizz (Nigeria), Moozlie(South Africa), Gigi Lamayne (South Africa), Rouge (South Africa), and Rossa Ree (Tanzania), behind the mic. Castle Lite’s U.N.I.T.Y is more than just another female HipHop collaboration; it is a celebration and call, not only to women across the continent but to the rest of the world, to give life to the power of women in unity. The five artists executed a simultaneous live stream of U.N.I.T.Y. this morning on Instagram; a first of its kind for Castle Lite and on the African continent. And speaking ahead of the song performance (livestream), Castle Lite Brand Director Silke Bucker said: “Our ethos as Castle Lite has consistently been about pushing boundaries through innovation, and to commemorate this special day, there was no better way for us to unite women than through what is truly our passion point – music.” “The ever-strengthening musical ties across the continent made it natural for these brilliant artists to come together in song with the brand, and Castle Lite is privileged to place women in hip-hop at the forefront. Today we all celebrate the power of women in UNITY and our glow of pride couldn’t be brighter in celebration with all the amazing women across the globe on this unique international day,” Bucker added.
Last year, the extra cold beer brand broke music barriers when they hosted the first ever all female Hip Hop experience titled Hip Hop Her story, which focused on highlighting the role women have played in the evolution of Hip Hop. Castle Lite’s Hip Hop Herstory was a success and learning from that experience meant that the U.N.I.T.Y. collaboration was not only logical but progressive in highlighting and honoring the talents and contributions of our very own from Africa.

The NBS made this known in its “CPI and Inflation Report’’ for February released in Abuja on Friday on its website. The bureau said the figure was 0.06 per
cent points lower than the 11.37 recorded in January in the period under review. It said the increases were recorded in all Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP) divisions that yielded the Headline index. On a month-on-month basis, it said the headline index decreased to 0.73 per cent in the period under review by 0.01 per cent points from 0.74 per cent recorded in January. It said the percentage change in the average composite CPI for the 12 months period ended December over the average of
CPI for the previous 12 months period. It, however, measured the CPI at 11.56 per cent in the period under review, indicating a 0.24 per cent decline from 11.80 per cent recorded in January. The bureau said the urban inflation rate decreased to 11.59 per cent (year-on-year) from 11.66 per cent recorded in January of the same year. It said the rural inflation rate also decreased to 11.05 per cent in February from 11.11 per cent recorded in January. According to the NBS, the CPI measures
the average change over time in prices of goods and services consumed by people for a day-to-day living. It said the construction of the CPI combines economic theory, sampling and other statistical Techniques, using data from other surveys to produce a weighted measure of average price changes in the Nigerian economy. It added that the production of the CPI requires skills of economists, statisticians, computer scientists, data collectors and others.
N740bn debt: AMCON to disengage APMs for not effective in debt recovery Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The Managing Director/CEO, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Ahmed Kuru, has hinted on the corporation’s plan to disengage Asset Management Partners (AMPs) that are not effective in recovering N740 billion debts assigned to them. The AMPs are currently handling over 6,000 accounts within AMCON portfolio but outsourced to them. The accounts outsourced to AMPs constitute only 20 per cent or N740 billion of the total Eligible Bank Assets (EBA) portfolio of N3.7 trillion. Kuru said AMCON places equal importance on the recovery efforts as they count towards
the achievement of the corporation’s core mandate. He also promised the corporation may assign more accounts to AMPs that have shown aggression and zeal based on the review of the AMP scheme so far. Kuru spoke at the 2019 edition of the AMCON/AMPs Interactive/Feedback Session in Abuja. AMPs, are consortiums appointed by AMCON after a rigorous selection process with specialist skills required to ensure recovery and debt resolution; banking, legal, valuation and accounting. Kuru said that collaborating with AMPs became necessary because AMCON has a total loan portfolio of over 12,000 loans of various sizes and sectors that are still lingering many years after the corporation was established.
He stated that when this is compared to AMCON’s staff strength, it became obvious that the corporation surely needed a strategic approach to improve coverage, recovery and results. To achieve the mandate as part of the corporation’s renewed strategy to resolve these loans, he said, AMCON in 2016 introduced the AMP scheme to assist the corporation’s recovery activities especially in tracing, identification and location of obligors with the intent to resolve their outstanding indebtedness; tracing, identification and location of assets of obligors (both pledged and un-pledged) to enhance the EBA value, and achieve set recovery objectives. The AMPs, he further said, were also empowered to enable them get involved in negotiation of settlement & restructuring terms with identified obligors in line with approved
guidelines; pursuing & enforcing debt recovery and collection activities geared towards optimization of assigned portfolio to achieve set targets and initiation of legal actions to further the loan recovery mandates in line with approved guidelines, amongst other obligor engagements. With this laid down guideline and with AMCON sunset in sight, Kuru said AMCON is more aggressive with its recovery strategy and also expects its partners to equally step up their game because the corporation will no longer accommodate any AMP that is not moving on the same speed. “We know it is not easy the jobs we have assigned to you. Recovery is a difficult job but even at that, a few of you (AMPs) have shown they cannot cope; we may have no choice to disengage such partner”, he said.

Govt. to demolish over 150 defective buildings in Lagos Island Temitope Adebayo Following the collapsed of a three-storey building on Massey Street in Ita Faji, Lagos, the Lagos state government has started pulling down defective buildings marked for demolition in Lagos Island. Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) are currently demolishing some houses at Freeman Street in Ita Faji. Twelve people, including nine children, were killed in the incident while 50 were rescued.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it had rescued all the trapped victims but some residents said people were still in the rubble. When he visited the area after the collapse, Akinwunmi Ambode, the governor, said some landlords had been resisting the demolition of defective buildings. But the Lagos state building control agency (LABSCA) on Friday began the demolition of defective buildings on the Lagos Island. Men of the agency’s task force pulled down a three storey building on 60A Freeman Street, Epetedo area. The demolition exercise is not
unconnected with the Wednesday incident around the same area, where a four-storey building collapsed, killing over 18 pupils and leaving scores injured. LABSCA official, Mr Omotayo Fakolujo, told newsmen that the property owner had been served several notices dating back to 2013 before the demolition. He said that over 150 houses on the Lagos Island have been identified for demolition. “On the Lagos Island, we have over 150 houses marked for demolition. We have removed over 30 in the last year and we are going to be removing them in phase. “What we are trying to do is to remove occupants from all these structures that
have been marked so that no life is lost in Lagos. “For now on Lagos Island alone, we have a clear court case approval of over 80 cases and 80 structures that are ready for removal and we will do it in phases systematically from today (Friday) so that life will be comfortable for Lagosians. “We will remove three today on Lagos Island. And for the houses that are still occupied, we are going to evict the occupants of the structures because their life is more prominent to us.” Noting that the agency is monitoring to ensure that new structures are built right, he noted that in the past three years there
Blind users can now explore photos with microsoft AI Godwin Anyebe Users can now use touch to explore objects and people in photos. Microsoft’s seen AI is an app that lets blind and limitedvision folks convert visual data into audio feedback, and it just got a useful new feature. It’s powered by machine learning,
of course, specifically object and scene recognition. All you need to do is take a photo or open one up in the viewer and tap anywhere on it. “This new feature enables users to tap their finger to an image on a touch-screen to hear a description of objects within an image and the spatial relationship between them,” wrote Seeing AI lead Saqib Shaikh in a blog post. “The app can even describe the physical appearance of people and predict
their mood.” Because there’s facial recognition built in as well, you could very well take a picture of your friends and hear who’s doing what and where, and whether there’s a dog in the picture (important) and so on. But the app now lets users tap around to find where objects are — obviously important to understanding the picture or recognizing it from before. Other details that may not have made it into the overall
description may also appear on closer inspection, such as flowers in the foreground or a movie poster in the background. In addition to this, the app now natively supports the iPad, which is certainly going to be nice for the many people who use Apple’s tablets as their primary interface for media and interactions. Lastly, there are a few improvements to the interface so users can order things in the app to their preference.

Negative effects of 2019 elections will take many years to erase and correct – Yerima Comrade Shettima Yerima a renowned human rights activists is the President of Arewa Consultative Forum. He is worried about the outcome of the 2019 elections, describing it as a failure, arguing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the country several years backward. He told PATRICK OKOHUE further in this interview that unless the nation deliberately decides to restructure the system, the future is bleak The much awaited 2019 elections just took place and many things happened, like the inconclusive elections in many states, as is now peculiar with this INEC and many other things that Nigerians had thought the nation had over grown in organising elections, but what is your impression of the elections generally? It was sad and very unfortunate that in the 21st century, we are experiencing this kind of election, it is sad, some of us felt very pained because a lot of us have a lot at stake. A lot of us feel so sad that we have made a lot of sacrifices for this democracy to come into being. Also remember that we have some of our colleagues who today are not alive to see what is happening, despite being part of the struggle from the days of the military that we have been together as young comrades. For over 20 years we were in the trenches clamouring for democracy, but this is not the type of democracy that we expected. We thought that by now we would have been improving, but the last 2019 election has actually shown that rather than going forward we are going backward, and have gone much steps behind now, because I do not see us solving this problem in the next 10, 20 years to come. What we have lost in this election, where the will of the people are not being respected, where people come out enmass to elect their leaders, but simply because of the interest of one or two persons, who felt they are not comfortable with those people who were elected, they undermine the collective will of the people and do it and get away with it. Where you see INEC suddenly becoming an APC arm of government, where security agencies who are supposed to be seen to be neutral and look at the country as their primary responsibility to protect, but rather turn back on the country and do the bidding of few individuals, this portend nothing but danger, where a ruling party does not believe that it should have opposition, rather what they want is to have a one party state, where anything goes, where impunity will become the order of the day, where they can do anything their own way without anybody checkmating their excesses, this is rather unhealthy. It is sad, what happened in the last election is not what we expected, with the kind of money approved for INEC, with the kind of both local and international support that they got, with the good will of Nigerians behind them to encourage them to give us free and fair election, which was the only thing Nigerians asked for, but it turned out to be something else. Today, whether you like it or not, PDP has been vindicated when they said they won
that presidential election from what has happened in the governorship election. Why was it so impossible for the INEC and the APC to agree that they have been defeated in those states that they declared inconclusive, only in states won by the PDP that elections have been declared inconclusive, but where APC won even when there are more cancellations, going by figures and everything, going by the Electoral Act, they were declared as winners, but in the case of states won by PDP it has been declared inconclusive, this is unfair, Nigerians deserve more than this. Unfortunately, today the INEC cannot be said to have any credibility before Nigerians, my worries is not what happens today, but the consequences of what happens today is what we are going to reap in the next 20 years, because you cannot come out and tell Nigerians to come out enmass and vote, because they will always think back on this, and where people wake-up on election days and they don’t feel like going to vote, it is obvious that we are in for a dooms day, because certainly we might not get the kind of leaders that we desire to govern this country, people who will lord it over us, the mafias will continue to do their own thing and they will continue to impose people on you to lead you whether you like it or not. This is the problem we are going to face in the future. You are one activist who has been around since the days of the military, you have seen a lot of things, what will you say is the problem of Nigeria, because over time many countries who were in the same situation with Nigeria have gone far ahead of us, yet we seem to be going round in cycles? Going back to history, in the dark days of the military, in the era when we had the likes of Gani Fawehinmi, of blessed memory, the likes of Beko Ransome Kuti, the likes of Wole Soyinka, even though he is alive, he is not actively involved in some of these struggles now, the likes of Chief Anthony Enahoro whom I worked with closely, especially during the NADECO days. The activism at that time was more coordinated, well organised, the civil society were doing very well, with the Campaign for Democracy, and so many of these platforms at that time, subsequently, after the demise of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Beko, Enahoro, things went wrong, the last we did was in PRONACO, under the leadership of Chief Enahoro, when I was the Youth Director, Beko was the deputy to Enahoro, we were advocating for a new constitution for the country, the civil society was strong because there

was a rallying point. After the demise of these heroes suddenly there was no more rallying point, that was where we began to lose it, some of them would rather think about themselves rather than think about the collective interest. At the time of Gani Fawehinmi, he does not care about where you came from, he does not care about your religion, when an injustice is melted on you he takes his own resources to fight for you. Are we saying we don’t have lawyers like Gani Fawehinmi today? We do, but do they have the same mind set like him? No. I wouldn’t want to mention names, but some of them are
still alive. They suddenly compromised the struggle, they made it as if it is their personal business and they do the business themselves to the extent that even their followers loss confidence in them, so there is no rallying point, that is why it is so difficult to make a clarion call and you see every civil society coming on the desk to do the battle, otherwise, if we were so organised the way we were in the past, some 15 years ago things wouldn’t have been the way it is today, so we lost out. Will you say the coming of the political era helped to compromise the

So many things happened at the time of the fight against military dictatorship, even when the military left power and returned to the Barracks, some of us were not mindful of the fact that we needed the power, we kept chasing shadow, when the military were no longer in control and some people came from behind who were never part of that struggle and hijacked the process. When we got to some extent we realised that the enemy we were looking for were no longer there, we turned back but some people have already grabbed the power and those are the same people today that have held this country to ransom, they never paid dues, they never made any sacrifice, they never suffered for it, they abuse the sensibility of Nigerians because they never made any sacrifice, they never knew what was involved at the time we fought against dictatorship. So, it is so sad and painful when we see this election of 2019, now we realise that almost what we did in the past, the kind of sacrifice of those lost in the battle, those that suffered a lot of detention with us, and this is not what we expected to see now, our case, the likes of me is different from somebody who just woke up one day to call himself a comrade, form a small group of people, sit down under air-condition, in a comfort zone and talk, the way they see things is not the way we see things, that is why sometimes when we talk some people will say are you mad, no, we are not mad, we know what we are saying, it is painful, because you felt this is something you are nursing for the betterment of the country, then one person will singlehandedly come from nowhere and abuse the entire process, people will just sit down and laugh and think it is normal. The consequences is that maybe after now we begin to reap it, probably some of us may not be alive again to give our own side of the story. But certainly, this is total backwardness, in this era you conduct an election of this nature, marred with rigging, even before the election day the election have been rigged, the hands are very clear, even the removal of Justice Walter Onnoghen was itself a rigging, just for all of these to happen and people fold their hands and say all is well. Some people are suggesting that for these kind of anomalies to be avoided that there is the need for electoral reforms that will involve maybe electronic voting, transmission of results electronically and all that, do you share these views? Huge protests in Algeria as allies turn on Bouteflika A huge crowd has gathered in the Algerian capital to protest for a fourth consecutive Friday demanding urgent change and an end to the rule of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power for 20 years. Demonstrators crammed streets and squares in central Algiers after Friday prayers, many draped in Algeria’s red, green and white flag. Reuters news agency said protesters numbered in the hundreds of thousands, describing the rally as the biggest since the start of the rallies last month. Demonstrations also took place in Bejaia, Oran, Batna, Tizi Ouzou and other cities. The rally was the first major test of whether 82-year-old Bouteflika has calmed anger on the streets with his surprise announcement on Monday that he would not seek reelection but would instead cancel the presidential poll scheduled for April 18. “You pretend to understand us, we will pretend to listen to you,” read a banner held aloft by the mostly young demonstrators. “The options for the authority to stay in power have become nil,” law student Kenza Sulaimani was quoted as saying by the DPA news agency. “We don’t want to see anyone belonging to the present regime.” Meanwhile, Algeria’s ruling FLN party showed more signs of turning its back on Bouteflika, with one senior figure saying in an interview overnight that the long-serving president was “history now”. Former spokesman Hocine Kheldoun, who talked to Ennahar
television late on Thursday, became one of the most senior FLN officials to break with Bouteflika publicly, saying the party had to look forward and support the aims of demonstrators. A former minister who is familiar with Bouteflika’s inner circle told the Reuters news agency that the president could not survive given the pressure building against him. “Game over. Bouteflika has no choice but to quit now,” the former minister said on condition of anonymity. Protesters were initially overjoyed when Bouteflika announced he would not stand again, but his move to cancel the vote prompted accusations of “tricks” and set off a new round of demonstrations. He has also named a new prime minister, replacing the unpopular Ahmed Ouyahia with former interior minister Noureddine Bedoui, who, on
Thursday, defended the postponement of the polls. The protest movement has been led by students in a country where half the population is under the age of 30 and youth unemployment has spurred anger against a government seen as out of touch. The military, which has traditionally played a behind-the-scenes powerbroker role, has distanced itself from Bouteflika and stayed in its barracks throughout the crisis. It is expected to retain influence under all scenarios. Bouteflika, who uses a wheelchair and has rarely appeared in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, has promised a “national conference” to carry out reforms. The president said new elections would be held “before the end of 2019”, suggesting he may stay in office for another year.
‘Hello, brother’: Muslim worshipper’s ‘last words’ to gunman A Muslim worshipper, who was among the first people to be killed in New Zealand’s worst ever mass shooting, appeared to say “Hello, brother” to the attacker just moments before he was shot dead. According to a live stream video of the attack, the man, who is yet to be identified, could be overheard saying “Hello, brother” as the gunman approached the entrance of the Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch. At least 49 people, including children, were killed in Friday’s attacks targeting the Al Noor and Linwood mosques. Police said on Saturday morning that 42 people were being treated for wounds following the “terrorist” attack. Two of them, including a four-year-old child, were in critical condition. Video footage of the assault, which has been widely shared on social media, showed a gunman shooting indiscriminately at worshippers as they ran for safety or lay huddled on the floor. A 28-year-old Australian man, who police have not identified, has been charged with murder. He is set to appear in court on Saturday. As the attack shocked New Zealand, a nation where violent crime is rare,
several social media users hailed the Muslim man who greeted the attacker before he was murdered. “’Hello, Brother’ were the last words of the first New Zealand victim. As he faced a rifle, his last words were peaceful words of unconditional love. DO NOT tell me that nonviolence is weak or pacifism is cowardice,” one Twitter user said. “’Hello brother’ a word came out of a pure soul filled with a peaceful faith. ‘Hello brother’ was said to a killer with a rifle pointed to this greeting. ‘Hello brother’ he said thinking that he is talking to a human with soul and feelings. ‘Hello brother’ was shot dead,” another wrote. “Hello brother and the reply was three bullets - Bi-ayyi thanbin qutilat (For what crime. She was killed) [Quran: 81, v9],” said another. Aziz Helou, a resident of Melbourne, Australia, wrote on Facebook that “amongst the chaos of today, the evil we both heard and saw”, that one incident stood out. “The first Muslim man to die, his final words were ‘hello brother’. These words were uttered by a man who symbolised Islam. He had a rifle pointed at him by a man with clear intentions to kill and
how did he respond? With anger? With aggression? No, with the most gentle and sincere greeting of ‘hello brother’. “Perhaps this hero was trying to defuse the situation? Maybe Allah used this man to show the world the kindness that is Islam. I don’t know but what I want, is to make certain, is that this detail isn’t lost amongst you. That this mans final act was an Islamic one, a sincere courageous and warm way to stop violence instead of fuelling it”. In a social media video, former New Zealand rugby star Sonny Bill Williams gave a tearful tribute to those killed. Williams, a practising Muslim, struggled to hold back tears in the 64-second Twitter post, telling families of those killed that “you are all in Paradise”. “I heard the news. I couldn’t put it into words how I’m feeling right now,” Williams said. “Just sending my duas (prayers) to the families”. Before the attacks took place, the gunman reportedly published an Islamophobic manifesto on Twitter. He then live-streamed his rampage, according to an analysis by the AFP news agency. Political leaders across the world condemned the killings, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan describing them as “the latest example of rising racism and Islamophobia”. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan also blamed the attacks on rising Islamophobia. “I blame these increasing terror attacks on the current Islamophobia post-9/11 where Islam and 1.3 billion Muslims have collectively been blamed for any act of terror by a Muslim,” said Khan. “This has been done deliberately to also demonise legitimate Muslim political struggles.”

The world reacts to New Zealand mosque attacks
Political and religious leaders from across the world have expressed their condemnation at the deadly shooting at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. Forty-nine people were killed and at least 48 suffered serious injuries in the shootings targeting the mosques during Friday prayers. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the shootings appeared to be a well-planned “terrorist attack”. Police said three men and a woman were in custody in connection with the attacks. The timing of the shootings and the posting on social media of what appeared to be live, point-of-view video footage of the assault by a gunman, added to the distress of many. Here is how political leaders around the world reacted soon after the incident. Turkey Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the deadly attack on the mosques, describing them as “the latest example of rising racism and Islamophobia.” “With this attack, hostility towards Islam, that the world has been idly watching and even encouraging for some time, has gone beyond individual harassment to reach the level of mass killing,” Erdogan said at the funeral of a former Turkish minister. “It is clear that the understanding represented by the killer that also targets our country, our people and myself, has started to take over Western societies like a cancer.” Erdogan’s spokesman separately condemned what he called a “racist and fascist” attack. “This attack shows the point which hostility to Islam and enmity to Muslims has reached,” Ibrahim Kalin wrote on Twitter. “We have seen many times Islamophobic discourse against Islam and Muslims turning into a perverse and murderous ideology. The world must raise its voice against such discourse and must say stop to Islamophobic fascist terrorism,” he said. US President Trump sent out a 270 character Tweet but failed to mention the word Muslims when condemning the deadly shootings. Instead, he sent his “warmest sympathy and best wishes” to the people of the country. “49 innocent people have so senselessly died, with so many more seriously injured. The US stands by New Zealand for anything we can do,” Trump wrote in a post on Twitter. Earlier, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that the US strongly condemned the attack. “The United States strongly condemns the attack in Christchurch. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with the people of New Zealand and their government against this vicious act of hate,” Sanders said. The UN Security Council condemned the mass shootings in Christchurch as “heinous and cowardly” and said acts of “terrorism” were criminal and unjustifiable. ‘Hello brother’: Muslim worshipper’s ‘last words’ to gunman “The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” the 15-member body said. A spokesman for Antonio Guterres, UN secretary-general, said the UN chief was “shocked and appalled at the terrorist attack” in New Zealand and was urging people everywhere to work together to “counter Islamophobia and eliminate intolerance and violent extremism”. Jordan According to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, a Jordanian man was among those killed and five other Jordanian nationals have been injured in the attack. “This heinous massacre is an appalling
terrorist crime. It unites us against extremism, hatred and terrorism, which knows no religion,” Jordan’s King Abdullah said. Lebanon Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Jubran Bassil warned against the rise of extremism in the West, saying it puts “communities at great risk and in direct confrontation that will only lead to the scourge of war.” Egypt Egypt said it stands by New Zealand and the families of the victims, and condemned “the despicable act of terrorism that goes against all principles of humanity and serves as a new reminder of the need to continue and intensify international efforts to fight terrorism, violence and extremism.” Qatar Qatar said it condemned in the strongest terms the “terrorist and brutal attack” in New Zealand. In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Qatar reiterated its firm stance on rejecting violence and terrorism, regardless of motives and reasons. Indonesia Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslimmajority country, strongly condemned the shooting as authorities were checking on whether any of its citizens were victims. “The government and the people of Indonesia convey deep condolences to the victims and their families,” Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a statement. READ MORE New Zealand PM: Dozens killed in ‘terrorist’ attack on mosques She was earlier cited by media as saying six Indonesians had been inside the mosque when the attack occurred, with three managing to escape and three still unaccounted for. Malaysia In Muslim-majority Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, the leader of the biggest party in its ruling coalition, said one Malaysian had been wounded in the attack he described as a “black tragedy facing humanity and universal peace”. “I am deeply saddened by this uncivilised act, which goes against humanistic values and took the lives of civilians,” he said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims and the people of New Zealand.” Pakistan Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan blamed the New Zealand attacks on rising Islamophobia after 2001’s September 11 attacks. “Shocked and strongly condemn the Christchurch, New Zealand, terrorist attack on mosques. This reaffirms what we have always maintained: that terrorism does not have a religion. Prayers go to the victims and their families,” he tweeted. “I blame these increasing terror attacks on the current Islamophobia post-9/11 where Islam & 1.3 bn Muslims have collectively been blamed for any act of terror by a Muslim. This has been done deliberately to also demonize legitimate Muslim political struggles,” he added. Afghanistan Afghanistan’s ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, Wahidullah Waissi, said on Twitter three Afghans had been wounded. “My thoughts are with the family of Afghan origin who’ve been shot and killed at this heinous incident.” Organization of Islamic Cooperation The Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said the attack “served as a further warning on the obvious dangers of hate, intolerance, and Islamophobia.” OIC’s Secretary General, Youssef alOthaimeen, urged the New Zealand government to provide more protection to Muslim communities living in the country. Al-Azhar University in Egypt Al-Azhar, the world’s foremost Sunni Islamic institution and university, said the attacks reflects an “escalation of the discourse of hate, xenophobia and Islamophobia” in Western countries.

Nigerians fighting their way to glory outside of Nigeria
Nigeria has always had a history when it comes to combat sports. The towering legend of Dick Tiger was impossible to escape, Hogan ‘Kid’ Bassey held a featherweight title as far back as 1957, and in the last three decades the likes of David Izonritei, Ike Ibeabuchi and Samuel Peter have shaken up the heavyweight division. Perhaps it is simply a case of Nigerians being able to channel their pent-up frustrations at the state of their home country through martial arts, and in that sense sport is simply a means of release. Be that as it may, Nigeria’s fighters are once again tasting glory and acclaim all over the world, flying the nation’s flag as they do so. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a relatively new phenomenon, founded only some 25 years ago. The UFC is the biggest competition in the mixed-martial arts (MMA), where competitors combine boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling and other disciplines while fighting in an octagonal cage. Now firmly established in the mainstream, Nigerians have wasted no time asserting their presence within the octagonal ring. Kamaru Usman was born in Auchi, but left for the United States of America at the age of

He took an interest in wrestling in high school while he harboured his own Olympic wrestling dreams, but in 2012 he debuted in the UFC. Usman, 31, is the first African to hold gold in the promotion on March 3, he defeated long-reigning welterweight champion Tyron Woodley to win the UFC Welterweight title. He may be the first, but it certainly does not seem like he will be the last. Israel Adesanya, 29, recently caught the eye when he defeated UFC legend and longest reigning champion in the competition’s history Anderson Silva in February. It was a highlight reel moment for the selfstyled ‘Last Stylebender’, who could end up being a champion as well in the middleweight division. While mixed martial art is considered a little too violent by some of the Nigerian audience, boxing is a lot easier to relate to. Anthony Joshua, the WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight champion of the world, is the obvious standard bearer, and is undefeated in 22 professional fights, 21 of those coming by way of knockout. His heritage lies in the bustling city of

Sagamu, two hours’ drive from Lagos. However, beyond him there is upcoming talent in the division in the form of Ughelli native Efe Ajagba. The 24-year-old has been largely forgotten since he represented Nigeria at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. There, he was eliminated in the Quarterfinal by Ivan Dychko, a previous bronze medal winner in the superheavyweight category. He would attribute that defeat to his lack of a proper sparring partner in training, and alleged that his higher ranking had seen him favoured by the judges. Believing he has stayed too long in the amateur ranks, in July 2017 he moved to the United States to turn professional. Since then, Ajagba’s growth and rise has been impossible to ignore: none of his nine professional fights to date has gone the distance, and eight of them have ended by way of knockout. He has the potential, certainly, to be a top heavyweight contender in the future, and so far looks to be managed intelligently and at a steady pace. There are some doubts over the quality of his opposition, but it is important to note he is only 24 years old, and has a lot of time to step it up.

Manchester City and Manchester United will not play their home games in next month’s UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on the same or consecutive nights, UEFA said on Thursday. European football’s governing body said, ahead of Friday’s draw, that this was as a result of a decision by local authorities. It said it would amend the scheduling if both Manchester clubs are drawn to play their home games in the same week. UEFA said Manchester United, who finished below champions Manchester City in the English Premier League last season, would have their fixture reversed. The quarter-final first leg matches will be played on April 9 and April 10 with the return legs scheduled for April 16 and April 17. “Following a decision made by relevant local authorities, Manchester City and Manchester United

The event which will be happening in Nigeria for the first time in 19 years will be staged in the city of Port Harcourt starting from April the 22 to 28. cannot play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights,” UEFA said. “Should both clubs be drawn within the same sequence (home or away), the team having finished lower in the domestic league the previous season — in this case United — will be reversed in accordance with the UEFA Club Competitions Committee principles. “In accordance with paragraph 21.01(b) of the UEFA Champions League regulations, the UEFA administration will determine which matches will be played on Tuesday, which matches on Wednesday.” UEFA said that the same rule would apply should both teams advance to the semi-finals. There is also the possibility that derby rivals Manchester United and Manchester City could face each other in the quarter-finals. They may even have to take on fellow English Premier League (EPL) sides Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
