Ex-VP to face charge over role in collapse of Bank PHB We dare FG to arrest Atiku on return from US - PDP

Mathew Dadiya and Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Federal Government has alleged that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, benefited from a slush fund that led to the collapsed of Bank PHB now Keystone Bank. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the allegation on Friday while briefing State House Correspondents. Mohammed said: “In any event, any time Abubakar returns home, he has questions to answer, following the fresh evidence that we have that he benefitted from slush funds that led to the collapse of the former Bank PHB. “The document we have shows that he benefitted to the tune of N156 million from that slush fund. “The papers, which we have here started from an internal memo on the 13th of January, 2009,

in which reads: Please refer for discussion you requested overdraft in favour of Atiku Abubakar for N156 million and deliver same to me. Please note that it must be delivered today (Jan. 13). On the same date, another memo was generated to confirm—please confirm that the amount stated below be issued from Claremont Management Services account. “And we have evidence here of the account mandate—the name of Atiku Abubakar; we also have a copy of the cheque in which the sum of N156 million was issued to Atiku Abubakar dated January 13, 2009 and of course we also have statement of account within that period that confirms that this sum was actually paid into his account. “These are fresh evidence as to his involvement in the collapse of Bank PHB, so we want him to stay as long he wants in the US but as soon he comes back, he has to explain to the electorate and CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

to Nigerians his role in the collapse in the former Bank PHB”. Mohammed added: “I have come to make few remarks about the recent visit of the presidential candidate of the PDP to the US. You can recall that few weeks ago, I did issue a statement advising the US government not to issue visa to Atiku. “Remember also that in that same press conference, I also stated that it remains the prerogative of the US government to issue visa to anyone it deems fit. “Let me say right away that we are not perturbed one bit that Alhaji Atiku Abukakar was able to secure visa to the US. As a matter of fact, he can go ahead and get the US Green card that will not save him from imminent defeat in the forthcoming election. “I want to remind Abubakar that the elections will be right here in Nigeria and not in the US,” the government’s spokesman said. In a swift reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the allegation against its Presidential candidate as trumped -up and went ahead to threaten the Federal Government to arrest Atiku on his return from the US. The party’s Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO), on Friday, described as laughable, what was described as plot by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidency to frame Atiku

out of fear that he is already coasting to victory in the February 16 Presidential election. The PPCO stated that Atiku Abubakar has nothing to do with the alleged issues leading to the collapse of Bank PHB. Rather, he said Atiku is “an honest and hard-working Nigerian who has no skeleton of any sort in his cupboard, unlike President Buhari, who is now entangled in series of corruption allegations”. Kola Ologbondiyan, speaking on behalf of the campaign body, said President Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) are jittery over Atiku Abubakar’s soaring popularity ahead of the elections. He berated the President for descending abysmally low to fabricate outright lies and falsehood in a bid to discredit a more qualified and acceptable Presidential candidate. The party tackled the Buhari Presidency on many accusations of corruption levelled against people close to the President without defence from government or proper investigation by anti- corruption agencies of government. “For emphasis, even the Chairman of President Buhari’s Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, had since told the world that the Buhari Presidency has searched everywhere and could not find anything incriminating on Atiku Abubakar.

“The world already knows that this attempt to mudsling our Presidential candidate is coming out of President Buhari’s frustration over Atiku Abubakar’s successful outing in the United States, for which the Buhari Presidency has gone into full hallucination. “ This is in addition to their frenzied face-saving effort to divert public attention from President Buhari’s humiliating appearances in the respective rallies and Television shows he has had”, said Ologbondiyan. The PPCO, however, counseled President Buhari and the APC to note that Nigerians can see through their lies, fabrications and frustration and that their scheme against Atiku Abubakar is already dead on arrival. It charged President Buhari to “provide explanation for the N9 trillion stolen under his watch as Minister of Petroleum Resources as detailed in the leaked NNPC memo. “President Buhari should as well, allow an open inquest into the alleged involvement of his relations in the N1.032 trillion alleged corrupt acquisitions in 9Mobile and Keystone Bank Plc”. PPCO gave assurance that Atiku and indeed all Nigerians, have already reached a national consensus to vote-in the PDP candidate as the next President of the country and the hat and they will not be distracted by this unfounded allegation.

Polls: Vote for me, I won’t betray your trust, Buhari begs Nigerians Pledges to end kidnappings, banditry

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that he would not betray their trust as he seeks their votes to be returned for another four years in office, come February 16 presidential poll. Buhari gave the assurance while speaking on Friday at the All Progressives Congress (APC), campaign rally held at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna. Speaking in Hausa language, the President recalled the hard stance he took against corruption in the country when he was military Head of State, locked up politicians and confiscated their loot before he was himself ousted and locked up, and many suspects retrieved their seized properties.

He pledged that having been favoured by God to return to power as a democratically elected civilian president, he would not relent in waging full war against corruption, adding that this time all loots recovered from corrupt government officials would not be returned to them. The President stressed that such monies and properties recovered from public officers since he assumed office would be deployed for the benefit of all Nigerians in a manner that they would not be retrieved by looters. Buhari stressed that having been elected by majority of Nigerians in 2015 and hoping to be reflected this year, he could absolutely assure all countrymen that he would equally keep faith with them and not betray their confidence in him. Maintaining that his

administration has been able to degrade the lethal capabilities of the Boko Haram terrorist group, he also pledged to stamp out the menace of kidnapping and banditry that had spiralled in some parts of the country. Magu raises the alarm over name dropping, extortion Warns public against impersonators

Andrew Orolua, Abuja

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has raised the alarm over the illegal action of some people who are using his name to defraud innocent Nigerians on the guise of securing favours from him. He insisted that he has never instructed any relation or officers and men of the commission to engage in any business transaction or wield influence in cases or investigations before the commission. Magu also urged the public to beware of certain dubious people who

are dropping his name for non-exiting jobs or favour, saying that he has no girlfriend anywhere. A statement by Tony Amokeodo, Special Assistant on Media & Publicity to Acting Chairman of EFCC, quoted Magu as saying: “My attention has just been drawn to latest despicable activities of certain disgruntled elements in our society who have decided to drop my name in order to defraud unsuspecting members of the public over non-existing jobs and unusual favours. “I wish to say with high sense of responsibility that I have never authorised any officer and men of the commission, including my relations to

engage in any business transaction or promise jobs for gratification. “I also wish to inform the general public that I have no girlfriend anywhere. “I wish to further inform the general public that recruitment of officers and men into the commission is strictly on due process. “I therefore advise the general public to beware of impersonators that are peddling unfounded information about my humble self and the commission. “I urge the general public to quickly alert the commission whenever anybody claims to be acting on my behalf or the EFCC for favours.”

2019 polls, a litmus test for acting IGP – Gov Al-Makura Mathew Dadiya, Abuja Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Almakura, has allayed fears by the oppositions that the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Mohammed Adamu, will compromise in the 2019 general elections, assuring that the IGP will not favour any particular candidate, describing him as a professional to the core. The governor, who met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, on Friday, shortly before he proceeded to Kaduna for his re-election campaign, said that the forthcoming

polls place a moral burden on the IGP to prove himself to the world. He said: “The IGP has a substantial burden on his shoulders, he is coming as new, and within the next one month, he is going to embark on a difficult exercise. But my consolation lies in the fact that he is someone whose commitment and loyalty to service is not in question. “I believe that he will bring to bear this perigee to ensure that he puts the professional focus of his job to satisfy all and sundry, both the government, opposition, and all ordinary men and by sticking to his direction so that whatever decision he takes will be in the best interest everybody and everybody will

be convinced. “I have no doubt in my mind that he will be an IGP that will be a pride to this nation”. Almakura said the people of Nasarawa State were grateful to Buhari for appointing their son as IGP. The Daily Times recalls that President Buhari recently approved the appointment of Mohammed Adamu as acting IGP to replace Idris Abubakar who attained 60 years on January 3, 2019 and mandatory 35 years in service. The acting IGP, had after decoration by the President, assured that he would restore professionalism in the police force, while sticking to rules of engagement.

UTME: JAMB registers over 300,000 in one week The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week. The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos. Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise. NAN reports that the board commenced registration of candidates for the 2019 all Computer Based Test (CBT) on Jan.10 and it would close on Feb. 21. According to him, the registration so far has been seamless, and the board is happy with the development. “We are happy with the way the

process is going; we hope it will continue this way. “So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as at Thursday. “We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said. Meanwhile JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified. “I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues. “Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her finger prints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja. “This will require the Chief Executive

to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said. This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues. The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) had argued that asking candidates with biometric issues to travel all the way to Abuja to get such issues sorted out was too demanding, citing dangers of transportation, fares, among others. Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the second Deputy National President of the Association, said that most parents were barely struggling to get money to get their children and wards registered. Ogunbanjo said that for those with such biometric issues, travelling to Abuja was an additional burden.

the country nor its treasury would be safe in his hands. He handed the APC flags to Kaduna State governor, Nasir elRufai and senatorial candidates of the party in the forthcoming elections, even as he charged the Kaduna electorate to insist on voting in Buhari and APC candidates at all levels. Governor el-Rufai, who was accompanied to the podium by governors of Zamfara, Lagos and Kebbi states, assured the President

of the genuine love for him by the people of the state, assuring him that Kaduna will deliver up to 80% of the total votes of about four million in the state to APC and Buhari. He condemned Atiku for travelling to the United States “to report to his masters”, declaring that getting a visa and going to America after 12 years shouldn’t be an achievement worthy of celebration by PDP and its supporters. Noting that his birthday falls on February 16, the day of the presidential poll, the governor appealed to Kaduna people to

honour him with a memorable gift on that day by even giving the President as much as 90 percent of the votes. Director-General of the President Buhari Campaign Council, Rotimi Amaechi, told the APC faithful to protect their votes on Election Day, alleging that the opposition PDP was planning to rig the poll. The president was driven round the stadium in an open-air bus from which he and el-Rufai acknowledged cheers from the crowd who were chanting solidarity songs.

Nigeria can become better with right thinking-Ubong King

As Sheri Riley, RMD, others to speak at Thinkation 2019

Motolani Oseni, Lagos Due to high unemployment rate, poor economic development, with rising population growth in the country, the founder of Ubong King Foundation, Ubong Thompson King, has charged Nigerians, especially the youths to change their thinking, in order to have a better country. This is just as the foundation confirmed that the second edition of its conference to promote creative thinking in the society, tagged, ‘Thinkation 2019: Out of the box’, would attract great speakers from all walks of life to tutor the youths on new perspectives and innovations to tackle Nigeria’s socio-economic problems, and meet the production demands of its growing population. Some of the speakers expected are the High Commissioner of Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Wendell Vincent Carlton De Landro; American actress, writer and empowerment speaker, Sheri Riley; member of the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Global Agenda Council; Hibaq Ali Maydhalaalis; Perfumer, Adewale Aladejana and Lilian Oparaji. Also, Olawale Ayilara; Calabar Chic and Founder CWG Plc, Austin Okere; Nigerian celebrities - Richard Mofe-Damijo and Timi Dakolo, among many other successful entrepreneurs. Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Lagos, Ubong King said, “If we can change our thinking, we can change the world.” He, however, added that Nigeria can be improved with right thinking, even as he explained that the paradigm would be changed through ‘Thinkation.’ The convener added that the Nigeria is in desperate time and in need of creative thinking young people with innovations that could help it triumph over the present socio-economic problems. “It was reported that on January 1st 2018 that 30, 210 children were born, but surprisingly, a lot of people did not understand the implication of that information, but I was touched because if 30,210 children were born uncalculated, unplanned are born in January, that means by the end of December 2018, 7.3 million children were added to our population. “I usually waited for the result of 2019 and I was not disappointed that on January 1st 2019, 25,684 children were born, that means by the end of 2019, 9.2 million would have been added to our population, so within 2018 and 2019, we would have added 16 million into Nigeria

population”, he explained. Commenting on the low contributions of tourism to the Nigeria’s economy, Amb. Wendell Landro, on the sideline of the event in Lagos, told The Daily Times that one of the reasons why Nigeria’s tourism and culture has not been contributing efficiently to the largest economy in Africa is because of her oil dependency. According to him, oil is a course and a blessing but more of a course than a blessing to some Africa countries, because money is coming in and sees no reason to diversify their economies. “For instance, a country like Dubai has oil but look at it today; they have major airports and amazing great things are happening there, why can’t that be happening in Nigeria too? But it is not happening, because of the perception of Nigerians”, he said. He, however, charged Nigerians at the helm to be visionary leaders, who are determined to serve the county, and not for themselves, not for their family or friends but for Nigeria. “And I maintained. Who is for Nigeria? Americans are for America, why can’t Nigerians for Nigeria? Because they want to go to the UK, they want to go to the US. Those countries are not their country, so Nigeria must come first”, he charged. Also speaking with our correspondent, a perfumer, Adewale Aladejana said: “I started my perfume business in 2015 with just 30,000, and we will hit the billion naira marks this year by God’s grace. So, we’ve come a long in four years in operation. Since the establishment of the perfume firm, he said it has expanded to international countries such as: UK, US; Canada; Ireland; Cyprus; South Korea; Ghana; Cameroon and Cote de voire. “We have over 600 distributors across the world, and over 25 employees. Although, we intends to grow to other Africa countries but we must understand that Nigeria is a big market on its own, and that is why we are currently working five more states to capture the entire 36 states of the country”, He said. Thinkation 2019 is an event put together by the Ubong King Foundation to speak to young Nigerians to come out of their dependency mindset and take on a productive mindset. It is set to influence the hungry minds in this generation to reposition themselves and get truly productive. Thinkation 2019 will hold today, January 19, 2019, at Harbour Point, Vitoria Island, Lagos.

Atiku may miss presidential debate - Secondus Short News Says cabal want to kill Buhari

Tunde Opalana, Abuja Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar may after all be absent from today’s Presidential debate. The party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus gave this indication in Abuja on Friday at the inauguration of 27 standing committees of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO). Secondus who was elated by Atiku’s trip to the United States told the gathering that the Presidential candidate will be returning back to the country on Saturday. Recall that the Presidential Debate for candidates of the 7 selected political parties are expected to intimate Nigerians with their Programmes and party’s manifestoes. Secondus said “Our Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar is in the United States now. This is an attestation to the fact that Atiku is clean and does not have any criminal charge in America “He will be meeting with members of the Nigerian community, the American business community and the United States government officials. “He will return back to the country on Sunday”.

Should he miss the debate, it will dampen the spirit of numerous PDP supporters who have been deriding the APC candidate, President Buhari of planning to tactically avoid the debate. The PDP National Chairman knock the aides of the President which he called “ the cabals “ for over stressing President Buhari, warning that they should not over stretched the health condition if the President. He said “we are pained about the way the cabal is mounting pressure on the President. You are aware of what happened in Kogi; you are aware of what happened during the interview. You can see that the President is under stress, he is under immense pressure from the leadership of the APC. “The analysis is very straight! Do they want to kill the President? Because they are over working him and you can see the mistakes all over. That interview was a national disgrace. “What happened in Warri yesterday was another national disgrace. No wonder we are not respected in the comity of nations. And when we say the truth, they say it is hate speech. “But some leaders of APC in 2015 could look at our President Jonathan and they will say he was clueless. It is there in the records. They will look at a man with PhD

and call him clueless. “Why are they now accusing us of hate speech for calling President Buhari incompetent. It is obvious that Nigeria does not need an incompetent President in this 21st century “, he said. Speaking about the PDP candidate, he said “ Nigerian public should know so that from now, they can see the clear difference between an energetic and competent candidate ready to become the President with a lot to offer, to turn around the economy of our country in the person of the Waziri of Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and one who has nothing to offer. “You can hear Atiku clearly. He has the rhetorics, the articulation. He can communicate, he can engage. So he is going to engage world leaders to bring honour and dignity to our country. “Shame on the leaders of the APC. Why can’t Buhari behave like Mandela? One term is enough. If he is doing this way like we are seeing in the videos, what will happen in the next four years? It will be a complete, absolute disaster. Secondus charged members of the committees to work round the clock to ensure the emergence of Atiku and other candidates seeking election on the platform of the party in the coming elections.

EFCC arraigns motor dealer for N2.9m fraud Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Port Harcourt Zonal Office has arraigned a motor dealer, Emmanuel Adiele before Justice Mohammed Abubakar of the Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Adiele was arraigned on a one-count charge for obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N2, 960,000 only. Adiele got into trouble when he allegedly collected the sum of N2.9 million, in two instalments, from one of his customers who offered to purchase a Ford Edge Sports Utility Vehicle from him. The petitioner alleged that he made full payments for the vehicle, but the defendant neither delivered it to him nor returned his money to him. He pleaded “not guilty” to the charge when it was read to him. We’re overwhelmed by rush to collect PVCs - INEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is overwhelmed by the current rush by eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) few days to the election. Mrs Ndidi Okafor, Head, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society at the INEC office in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday. Okafor therefore, appealed to prospective voters who were yet to collect their PVCs in the FCT to be patient with the commission as it is doing everything possible to distribute them before the deadline. NAN reports that INEC had set Feb. 8, as deadline for eligible voters to collect their PVCs. “We have been distributing PVCs in the six Area Councils and in all the 62 wards of the FCT for the past 20 months. “We had earlier appealed to residents to come and collect theirs to discourage the 11th hour rush syndrome, but they did not come, now they are putting pressure on everybody. “One of our staff was injured and most of them cannot even take break to eat due to the pressure from the people, so we are working on seeking assistance of the police in all the collection centres to maintain order.

N190m property fraud: Supreme Court dismisses case against EFCC Andrew Orolua, Abuja The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by one Frank Amah, who was prosecuted by the EFCC in 2007 before a Lagos State High Court for an alleged N190 million property fraud. The EFCC had brought Amah and his company, Chyfrank Nigeria Limited, before Justice M.O. Obadina on a six-count charge of conspiracy, and obtaining by false pretence in counts one to four, and stealing in counts five and six. Specifically, the EFCC accused him of presenting himself as an agent of one Alhaji Abubakar Mallam, to sell a property located at Ikoyi, a highbrow suburb in Lagos which was said to cost N190 million. The property was said to have been listed

for sale by the Federal Government in February 2005. Amah claimed that it was allocated to Abubakar, then a serving Deputy-Comptroller of Customs who he said was his “bosom friend”. However, after the transaction with Dunu had been concluded, the Federal Government, cancelled the sale of the government houses in Ikoyi, including the one which Amah purportedly sold to Dunu. Abubakar was to later testify in Court, that somebody used his name fraudulently to buy Federal Government house in Ikoyi, and that he never owned any house there. The EFCC had accused him of fraudulently collecting N102, 400,000 from Dunu, which was never delivered to any Alhaji Abubakar Mallam, but instead used N94, 800,000 out of it to purchase a house at Thompson Avenue, Lagos from the Federal Government Implementation Committee. He was also accused in counts five and

six of fraudulently obtaining N86, 900,000 and N7, 900,000 from Dunu, for the said transaction. Justice Obadina, however, in his ruling, sustained Amah’s “no-case” submission, and invariably discharged and acquitted him. But the EFCC appealed the ruling at the Court of Appeal, which on February 27, 2015 sustained counts five and six preferred against Amah, overruling the decision of the lower court and set it aside. The Court of Appeal held that “the respondent had adduced a prima facie evidence on counts five and six, which require some explanations from Amah and Chyfrank Nigeria Limited”. Dissatisfied with the ruling, Amah approached the Supreme Court, which on January 11, 2019 upheld the decision of the Appellate Court, ordering him to stand trial for counts five and six.

The Federal Government has trained 110 youths and some women on fish production as part of empowerment programme in Gombe State. The five-day fish training programme is with theme: “Fish Production and Management for Economic Empowerment and Food Security”. The programme was held at the Federal College of Horticulture (FCH) in Dadin Kowa, Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area of the state. Prof. Fatima Sawa, the Provost of the College said the the programme was in line with the Federal Government’s drive to address the threat of food insecurity through fish production. Sawa, who was represented by the Acting Registrar of the College, Muhammed Tukur, said that the programme, one of many being organised by the college, was to empower youths and women and to reduce unemployment in the country. Malam Mohammed Kashere, the Training Co-ordinator said that the training had equipped the participants with the needed skills to boost fish production in the country.

Road fatality down by 18% in 2018, says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said fatality on the nation’s highways reduced by 18.6 per cent in 2018, according to its end-of-year special patrol report. The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Bisi Kazeem, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Friday. Kazeem said that the special patrol, tagged: “Operation Zero Tolerance for Road Traffic Crashes,” took place between Dec. 20, 2018 and Jan. 15, 2019. He said that the number of people, who died in road mishaps, during the period, dropped from 338 in 2017 to 275 in 2018. He said that the figure showed a difference of 63, representing 18.6 per cent. The CPEO said that 2018 exercise came with different innovations, including the establishment of additional help areas and deployment of more personnel and logistics. Others, he said, included the creation of alternative routes for motorists and greater coverage of crash-prone corridors across the country by the organisation. Kazeem said that the 2018 report showed obvious improvement in certain areas over that of 2017. “For instance, while a total of 540 crashes were recorded in 2017 as against 542 in 2018, the number of people involved reduced from 4, 418 in 2017 to 4, 375 in 2018.

His Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that, his Restoration Administration has succeeded in making a very clear and positive difference in the state and that the people will see more changes before his tenure runs out.

He commended the organisers of the award for finding him worthy to be honoured and dedicated it to the people of Bayelsa State and members of his team. Asked how he was able to embark on what has been described as unparalleled infrastructure development of Bayelsa State, which included building an international airport, the 80-kilometre road to Ekeremor that had been on the drawing board for more than four decades as well as other big ticket projects, he said: “It is a question of commitment. Above all, it had to do with the passion of my team and I. “Now we are consolidating and our people will see more changes. What is important is for people to know that

public office is a platform for service. I think we have demonstrated that in all facets of governance of the state. “These awards are coming because of our genuine commitment to service. The Bayelsa story has changed for good because of this commitment.” This is the second time the governor is being decorated this January coming on the heels of the Daily Asset Newspaper Governor of the Year Award on Tuesday. At the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday, Chris Osaugwu and S. I Ameh respective counsels for the 3rd and 1st defendants moved preliminary objections to the petition insisting that it was filed outside 14 days stipulated by the law on pre-election matters. They argued that the court was therefore not in position to entertain the petition, urging that the court discontinue the case.

Fulani group endorses Buhari for second term Mathew Dadiya, Abuja A Fulani Pastoralists group under the auspices of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has declared its support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term re-election bid. The group said that they were throwing their weight behind the President because of his support and development of livestock policies which would enhance their lives and that of their cattle. MACBAN announced their support on Friday while speaking to State House correspondents after the secretary, Mohammed Kiruwa led other members to meet with President Buhari. He said although the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 16 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar was also a Fulani man from the north, he failed as Vice President to secure the interest of pastoralists in the country. Kiruwa explained, “they are both Fulanies. Atiku had two terms as Vice President in this country. Under his tenure we did not see anything that was put in place to change the position of pastoralists in Nigeria. Throughout those periods of the past administrations, the

subsector suffered the worst neglect ever. “The grazing reserves were allowed to be taken over by farmers. The infrastructure in the sector were allowed to dilapidate, the reserve were not maintained. It is now that we have began to see light at the end of the tunnel. And we know what Buhari did when he was in the PTF, he has a lot of passion for the development of this sub-sector. We also see the desire of what he wants to do to revive the livestock sub-sector in the country”. According to him, MACBAN informed the President that the 20-million strong body had sent the delegation to endorse his bid for a second term of office on account of the administration’s achievements in office which included, the successful clampdown on kidnapping and cattle rustling; and the fight against terrorism and corrupt elements in the society. The leader of MACBAN said President Buhari’s personal qualities of honesty, integrity and his unparalleled commitment to the unity and progress of the nation, also informed his association’s support for a renewal of his tenure. In his remarks, President Buhari appealed for accommodation and tolerance among cattle herders and farmers throughout the country. The President said that his government will give equal respect to all citizens irrespective

of their ethnic, religious and geopolitical backgrounds. “I appeal to all farmers and herders for restraint, mutual respect and tolerance for one another as people destined to live together in this great country. I appeal for patience and understanding as the administration works towards lasting solutions to these conflicts,” the President stated. He also urged the herders to support him in the task of bringing lasting peace to the country. The President called on state governors to work with the Minister of Agriculture, who he said, had been mandated to work out a solution with states by which herders will have access to water for their livestock, and farmers will have security against destruction of their farmlands. The President also attributed part of the conflict between the two groups to the climate change phenomenon and population explosion, but regretted that its politicization by selfish individuals who did not mean well for the country did not also help matters. According to the President, “Before the Benue and Taraba crises, I called the Minister of Agriculture and the Governor of Central Bank and asked them to work with the state governors on rediscovering the gazetted cattle routes, clear of farmlands that had made for peace during the First Republic.”

CUPP fingers Amaechi, el-Rufai, AGF Malami Short News in fresh plot to arrest Onnoghen Bauchi NUJ condemns attack on Tunde Opalana, Abuja Coalition of opposition parties in Nigeria, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has alleged fresh plot by the federal government to arrest the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. The CUPP also alleged that the Presidency ordered the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar to disregard the Federal Highway Court order restraining the Tribunal from continuing the trial. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the coalition accused the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi , Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Elrufai, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami as part of the clique that sponsor a new petition to National Judicial Council to force Onnoghen out of office. They finally said that Onnoghen’s purported removal was to make way for the appointment of Justice Tanko Mohammed in acting capacity. CUPP’s Spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere said “the cabal of the Presidency have just concluded a meeting last night where they have now set the stage to burn down the institution of democracy and constitutional governance for the purpose of achieving a narrow aim of annexing the judiciary.

“Just few hours after our release of the secret letter directing the freezing of the account of the CJN illegally without a Court order, these men have at the end of their meeting last night directed the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Mr. Danladi Umar to disregard the Order of the Federal High Court, Abuja which has directed the Tribunal to maintain status quo and go ahead to issue a bench warrant on the next adjourned date being Tuesday the 22nd January, 2019 in the event the CJN does not appear in Court. “The meeting of the Presidency cabal also resolved and directed the new Ag. Inspector General of Police that the immediate arrest of the CJN on the same Tuesday as effort will be made to ensure he is served with the order same day, following the issuance of the arrest warrant would be his litmus test for his speedy confirmation as the substantive Inspector General. “They further resolved that another petition would now be forwarded to the National Judicial Council and that petition has already been drafted in the Chambers of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. “This petition will precede the other frivolous and trumped up allegations which will be submitted against Justice Mary Peter-Odili, Justice Cletus Nweze and Justice Rhodes Vivour just to scare them away and tarnish their good

names. “Those in the meeting were Rotimi Amechi, Nasir El-Rufai, Abubakar Malami, Boss Mustapha, and the Senior Advocate of Nigeria working with Rotimi Amechi who drafted the petition. The President is aware of this plot as the meeting rose with the resolution that Rotimi Amechi and El-Rufai would go to brief the President immediately. The CUPP reminded the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal of his pending criminal charges and conscripted that as long as he issued the arrest warrant nobody will move against him. It said the said charges against the Chairman of the Tribunal has already been filed and is being handled by the Spokesman of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Festus Keyamo. This is a copy of the charge already filed. “The plan on Tuesday to get Danladi Umar to issue a bench warrant against the CJN, the plan on Tuesday to get the Ag, IGP to arrest the CJN and the plan on Tuesday to forcibly arraign the CJN are solely aimed at forcing the CJN out of office hence paving the way for a well-known pro-Buhari Judge, Justice Tanko Mohammed who is the Deputy Chaiman of the NJC to take over and do all their bidding. Let it be known that unless and until the CJN is found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction, he will not resign!

Court admits Melaye to bail on compassionate grounds Andrew Orolua, Abuja An Abuja High Court on Friday admitted Senator Dino Malaye to bail on health grounds. Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, granted the bail while ruling on a fundamental rights suit filed before the court by the complainant. Senator Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has been in police custody since January 4, 2019, when he surrendered himself to the Police, who had laid siege at his Maitama, Abuja residence. The judge in the ruling on the application for bail filed by Melaye’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), held that though there was no formal charge before the court, he would still grant bail on health ground. However, the Court ordered the complainant

to provide three sureties, two of which must show evidence of landed properties in Abuja, as part of the conditions of the bail. The Court also held that the third surety must be a clerk of the National Assembly who must do a letter to the court that the applicant must be produced in court when he is required. Justice Halilu subsequently adjourned till January 23, to rule on the substantive matter. In arguing the bail application, Chief Ozekhome submitted that ill health was a condition to reckon with in consideration for bail. According to Melaye’s lawyer, it is only the living that can stand trial. Ozekhome noted that in an investigation procedure it was unlawful to arrest a suspect unless there are enough evidence to caution him. While submitted that Melaye is a victim of Political Vendetta, Ozekhome said his client

who is a senatorial candidate in the forthcoming general is been held in custody, purposely to prevent him from taking part in the election. Prosecuting counsel, Simon Lough, in opposing the bail application, said Melaye’s arrest was lawful because it was in pursuant to a petition written against him. He said that the petition alleged that Melaye was in possession of firearms and he attempted to commit an assassination. On the issue of Melaye’s health condition, Lough argued that there was no evidence given by the applicant to show that the medical facility where he was taken cannot take care of his illness. Melaye, had locked up himself for 8 days in his house in Maitama, Abuja, to prevent his arrest by a team of police operatives who besieged his residence to arrest him over alleged attempted culpable homicide.

Umahi explained that despite he did not enjoy the support of his former boss, Ex-Governor Martin Elechi in 2015, the people of Ikwo LGA still gave him 90percent votes, saying he was optimistic that they would replicate same in the upcoming elections. He urged the party faithful to throw their support behind all PDP candidates; maintaining that those contesting against them were wasting their time as the party had, no rival in the state.

The plight of contractors in Kebbi handling feeding in Senior and Junior Secondary Schools in the state can be best described as pathetic, as they watch their hopes go down the drain with the State’s refusal to settle them. Hajiya Maryam Umar who is the leader of the female contractors told Daiy Times that for over three years the state government has refused to pay them a kobo. She said that they have tendered evidence of executing the feeding contracts that was duly confirmed by the State Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Magata Alieru who later sent it to the Government House for necessary action. Aside that, Maryam added that their leadership met with the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Sulaiman Argungu on the matter but nothing concrete came out of it except denial. The chief crusader lamented that the lukewarm attitudes of Kebbi Government jeopardises the social and health lives of the contractors whom she said many are now lying badly sick while some are battling with hunger and high blood pressure due to interminable waiting.

Chika Ike: One of the greatest challenge was losing my parents For Chika Ike, the stardom she is currently enjoying today is as a result of her constant hardwork and consistency put over time. She kicked off her acting career at an early age of six in her local church and has since grown to the super-diva enjoyed in our various TV screens. Having featured in countless movies, Chika is an actress with exceptional and outstanding display of roles and characters. Recently, Chika added another feather to her nest as she turned an author with the unveiling of her first book titled ‘Boss Up’ where she opened up on never heard details of her upbringing, her Harvard business school experience, concerning fear and successful business tips. She spoke with MUTIAT ALLI about this and other sundry issues. With your new book, you exposed a lot about of your family issues; what steps have you taken to reconcile with your father? Despite the rejection by my father, all this are courage that has shaped me to the woman that I am today. Although my father is late now, but I was able to do that with the help of my mother. We had a good relationship before he passed on like three years ago. We had that moment where we had to sit down and make amends. Do you now have a good relationship with other members of your family after? Definitely!! One of the reason why you have to read the book to know how we got that point ; I think it’s what happens to a lot of people because most time you don’t know what you are doing until you are been confronted on what you have been doing. My father is a wonderful man and good husband to my mother; looking at their relationship always made me to want to get married. My father is full of surprises and he made have this believe that marriage is beautiful depending on who are getting married to. It’s been said that woman like to married a man like their father; was that applicable to you too? Yes!! If I could have an husband like my father because he as a perfect gentleman and a good man& husband to my mother. You talked about your previous marriage, is there any part of the book where you addressed finding love again? Off course in the book I mentioned my past marriage and everyone is aware of it because it was all over the social media and also there is a part of the book where I also took part of the blame and all that. Is there a new relationship now? I think you have to wait for the big announcement to come when it’s due. Having spoke about your past relationship in the book, are you not scared that you may be dragged to court for revealing too much? For me all I wrote in the book is equally all that have been addressed in the court and in the media, there is no defamation of character at all because it’s all there in the media. The court knew why I left my marriage because it is legal as it was due to domestic violence which was obvious. I don’t have a terrible relationship with my ex, I have forgotten and let go all that happened and moved on. What will you miss most about your late mum? I will miss everything because my mum was very strong woman, passionate and don’t forget she was a pastor. She was educated and very

outspoken philanthropist. She was my pillar; like I always say to people when your parents passed, God becomes your father and mother and he will surely be there for you always. When the media tries to play on your vulnerabilities; what will be your reaction? The normal reaction because of course nobody wants his/her vulnerabilities is played upon. But at this point in my life; it’s a two-way street, life is either good or bad. You embrace the truth and leave the bad; at this point I think I am strong right now and for me to write this book showed that I am ready. So how were you able to overcome those turbulence moments in your life? I think one of the greatest challenges so far for me was when my parents passed, for two years I was living but I was not myself because I was going through a lot of emotion. Six months after mum passed I lost my sense of being what I meant by that is that I could not think straight because I was going through a moment of depression. I never knew that the loss of a parent or a family member can make you pass through this but at the end, I prayed, went for counseling and I got better. How affordable is the book? Very affordable as a copy can be gotten for a token of five thousand naira but in some couple of days, I will be doing lots of promotions but you have to stay tuned to benefit from it. On Okada books download its selling for two thousand five hundred naira. You equally said you took some blames in the book; young girls will like to know what part of the blame you took and how you were able to resolve it? You have to read the book to understand all this phases I went through!! Truth be told, I took blames that were mine and how I overcome it is one of the reason you have to read the book. You ventured into real estate at age 20, why then do you go into acting? I have always loved to act because acting is my first love; it makes me wake up in the morning feeling happy. My latest movie is titled ‘Small Chops’ and will be out in cinemas across the country. Real Estate on the side is equally one of my ventures because I am a business oriented person and acting has given me that platform to get favored and be involved in several projects. With ‘Boss Up’, do we get to see like sequence of it into a movie or series? Let’s keep our fingers crossed and just see how we unfolds because am very sure I will pull a Beyoncé on all of you. Currently I am

Chika Ike looking at all the opportunities that will come with it but on the movie aspect I have not thought about it. What is the scariest experience you have had in acting? I was on clutches at some point and what made me to use that is part of the reason why you need to

read the book. That was one of my scariest moment because I thought I was going to lose my legs because the doctor told me I won’t be able to do some amount things for some years; that was my breaking point in the Nollywood. Did is happen during a movie set? Yes it was on a movie set.

Relationship

When your relationship go brutal, Walk away By Mutiat Alli

Sometimes we are so reluctant on deciding when to walk away from people who have proved that they are not meant for us. We ignore the signs, we waste much of our time in that relationship thinking that things will change for the better or work out, we fight big and hard battles, we miss out on chances of good people and we waste too much of our energy. Sometimes we are abused physically but still cling unto the relationship. If you find yourself in a relationship that makes you sheds tears or in relationship that you are been abused physically and you are already seeing the signs that you don’t belong together, please don’t waste more of your time and energy on such relationship. No matter how painful it maybe, please gather up all the courage and walk away for your dear life and fragile heart. You were not meant to be in pain and unhappy for all your entire life. You were not caged or locked there that you can’t walk away. And it’s not the end of

your life. Accept it that you were not meant to be and move on. Do not stay in the relationship because you don’t want your friends to laugh at you, you will only endanger your life in the process. If you make the mistake of getting married to such a man then my dear you in for a bigger trouble. We shouldn’t stay in a relationship where we are the only one that tries to please our man; both parties should try and please each other. Courtship leads to marriage, so during the period of courtship, if you see any sign that you think will not be favorable to you, please my dear, flee from it so that it doesn’t take your life. I’ve witnessed a relationship where a guy abused his girlfriend physically and the girl nearly lost her life in the process. How do you know it’s time to walk away from a brutal relationship? Here are some of the signs to show you that it’s time to take a walk: You fight constantly: Fighting in relationships is a natural in relationships. But if you guys are

constantly bickering and arguing or, more important, every fight you have turns nasty, it’s a sign to walk away. In the right relationship, you’ll still have problems, but they shouldn’t be a normal thing, and you should be able to get through them like respectful adults who care about each other but if you can’t solve the matter amicably then you have to take a walk. He thinks you are not good for him anymore: There is no relationship

without challenges, but there’s a very big difference between feeling inspired to be a better you and feeling inadequate in that relationship, and that can be hard to spot at first. But if the guy is making you feel insecure and irrelevant, get out now. He’s always hurting your feelings: When you started off with your partner, you both had a blossom relationship but now he sees you as a threat in his life, he does everything possible to make sure you cry, all he’s trying to do is to get you out of his life. If you are facing such a situation, it’s time to move out from such relationship. He uses you as his punching bag: A woman is seen as a helper to a man and not as a punching bag. A responsible man will never lay his hands on his lady. So my dear, if a guy beats you up at the slightest provocation, please run away from him. Do not stay thinking he will change as time goes on, because he will never change. The attitude he displays during your courtship is what he will take into marriage.

Social Media strategist, Pamilerin Adegoke takes the ‘Give A Girl Child A Pad’ campaign to Ibadan Isaac Oguntoye As part of his Corporate Social Responsibility, popular social media strategist, Pamilerin Adegoke, a.k.a “The Pamilerin,” kicked off his pet project ‘Give A Girl Child A Pad’ in the last quarter of 2018 at the Alapere Senior High School, Ketu, Lagos State. According to Pamilerin, ‘the economic situation in Nigeria is already bad enough and its sad to realize that a lot of women and young girls can’t even afford something as basic as a pad, so my team and I came up with the idea to do the best we can to ensure as many girls as possible get access to sanitary pads’. The first edition took place in November at the Alapere Senior High School, Ketu where 1300 sanitary pads were distributed to secondary school girls and just a few days ago, the train moved to the ancient city of Ibadan in Oyo State where students of People’s Girls Grammar school and Isabatudeen Girls Grammar school got their share of free sanitary pads. Over 1500 sanitary pads were shared in Ibadan. In the words of Pamilerin, ‘we’ll continue to do the best we can to help the girl child and let them know that they are not alone. In the coming weeks, the train will move to other South Western States in the country’. However organisers are calling on both the private and public sector for support on this laudable project.

NRC debunks online ticket racketeering, says political enemies at work Idu Jude Amidst the protracted controversy of online ticket racketeering at the Abuja/ Kaduna rail line, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has debunked the news circulating on the social media, describing it as the hand work of political enemies. The Managing Director, Engr.Fidet Okhiria, who disclosed this on Friday in Abuja, said there is a website circulating on social media for passengers to purchase tickets online saying it’s a fraudulent site and Nigerians should desist from such site. The Daily Times recall that the Abuja/ Kaduna rail line, since insertion, has been a Customer to tickets racketeering. Passengers have in the past accused the management not allowing the racketeers inflate prices of the ticket to richest in the society. “It is not true and has been making efforts to let people know that we have not started. That is a fraudulent website and when we do it, we will tell people. “ Because we have been telling people that we require it to be very secured, so that people cannot hack into it and do ugly things, so we have not started and Nigerians should know that we have not started the e-ticketing. “So, I will appeal to them that they should not patronise a site for ticketing issues, we still sell our tickets in hard copy at the stations”, he said. He however, noted that the process of the E-ticketing was ongoing stating that it was going to be under public Private Partnership (PPP) which has to go through due process. Okhiria, stated that by first quarter of 2019, all the processes should be over by ICRC for the automated tickets to commence. “We have gone very far, we want to partner with private companies so that there will be reliability, it is presently with ICRC so that all due process will be met, I hope by first quarter of 2019, we would have finished the processes. “We are trying to do PPP arrangements; there are some infrastructure that needs to be put in place so that the stations can have one entry in and one entrance out. “It is only then that E-ticketing can make sense, not when all the stations are porous, they have to be a control exist point which will have to go through ICRC.” Also, Mr. Paschal Nnorli, Manager, Abuja - Kaduna Train Service has appealed to passengers to desist from fake messages requesting for passengers to buy and reserve tickets online. He however stated that such messages didn’t emanate from NRC. According to the management, it’s attention was drawn to a fake online message requesting prospective passengers on Abuja - Kaduna train route to buy or reserve tickets online by visiting a certain website. “The general public especially our esteem passengers on Abuja - Kaduna Train Sevice (AKTS) are please advised not to patronise any of such calls as they did not emanate from NRC. “For clarity sake, NRC train tickets for now are obtainable in hard copy only from designated railway stations. Prospective passengers are therefore advised to buy their tickets only from NRC designated ticket offices and not through any other means,” he said.

CBN, stakeholders bemoan low insurance patronage Says 97.9m Nigerians don’t have insurance cover Unbanked Nigerians hit 60.1m, 96.3m don’t use mobile banking

Mathew Dadiya, Abuja The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other members of the financial sector, participating at the National Financial Inclusion Conference have raised the alarm over low patronage of insurance products in the country, decrying that 97.9 million do not have insurance cover. This is even as the Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFinA) 2018 survey, indicated that 63.6 per cent of Nigeria’s adult population have access to financial services, while 36.6 per cent are still financially excluded. The Director, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Mr. Kofo Salam-Alada made this known on Friday while presenting highlights of the Conference Communique to newsmen in Abuja. According to EFInA, 60.1 million Nigerians do not have a bank account, 96.3 million do not

use mobile money. Salam-Alada said that participants at the conference believed that insurance culture should be imbibed by Nigerians as it holds the key to poverty alleviation among poor and rural dwellers. The director said that in their discussions on financial inclusion, it was observed that there was currently more awareness about banking and other similar financial services than insurance. He said that it was for this reason that of all the financial services, insurance was one of the least patronised products. “We have agreed to put together a delegation to visit the regulatory agency for insurance that is the National Insurance Commission. “We will also visit the insurance associations to look at the strategies they are working on to advance insurance for financial service penetration. “The participants also identified the need to deepen legislative backing for the insurance

industry in addition to the existing compulsory insurance like the third party insurance,’’ he said. Also, Salam-Alada said that micro insurance scheme could be used as a tool to achieve financial inclusion and assist the industry to cover the gap between insurers and the grass root population. The Director also spoke on the findings by Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA), which shows that the North-East and North-West patronises financial services the least. “We recognised that the North-East and North-West have low financial penetration and this was attributed to cultural and religious factors. “So the conference resolved that providers of financial services should be encouraged to device more products that will be acceptable in these areas. “In addition to that, stakeholders using our various platforms will also devise programmes that will appeal to the people in the regions and

bring them into the inclusion bracket. Salam-Alade urged financial service providers to consistently deliver good services to their customers so that they in turn will not discourage others to use these products. According to the EFinA 2018 survey, 63.6 per cent of Nigeria’s adult population have access to financial services, while 36.6 per cent are still financially excluded. EFinA is a non-governmental organization and a financial sector development organization funded by the DFID and Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation. The survey was anchored on several indicators including Banked Population; Remittances; Savings with a Bank; Payments; Received Income; Loan with a Bank; and Banking Agents, among others. The EFInA survey reported that three factors of affordability, institutional exclusion and lack of awareness were the biggest obstacles to financial inclusion.

Nigeria, 4 others to gain as Afreximbank okays $170m to Orascom Mathew Dadiya, Abuja In pursuit of its short and mediumterm expansion strategy, an Egypt-based conglomerate Orascom Investment Holding (OIH) has gotten a facility agreement of $170 million signed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), which help in expanding its pan-African activities. The Director, Global Communications and Marketing, Obi Emekekwue, quoted the Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Oramah as saying that the facility agreement was part of the Bank’s effort to promote intra-African investments and export manufacturing using the framework of its Intra-African

Investment Finance Facility. Oramah said that the transaction was a significant opportunity for OIH’s targeted investments in companies across Africa to support their transformation, increase their production capacity and produce higher quality exports through better value addition, especially in the agro-processing sector. The facility would complement ongoing macroeconomic and safety net reforms in Egypt, which seek to foster sector-specific economic growth, especially in strategic sectors with proven record of creating jobs and reducing poverty, he said. The President said that the agreement would set up long-term strategic partnership between Afreximbank and Orascom, describing OIH as one of the

most successful and diverse holding companies in the North Africa region, with the potential of assisting the Bank in expanding its operations in the regional and Egyptian markets. “Our collaboration opens the potential for our two institutions to strengthen their relationship and mutual cooperation in order to make significant contributions towards unlocking the full potentials of intra-African investment,” he added. Also speaking, Naguib Sawiris, Chairman of OIH, said that that the company’s main focus was currently on investing in Africa, adding that the continent would only achieve progress if intra-African trade and investment growth happened. It was up to the Africans to come

How TraderMoni, MarketMoni, other initiatives lifting Nigerians out of poverty – Osinbajo Motolani Oseni Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has said the implementation of the Buhari administration’s micro-credit schemes, including TraderMoni and MarketMoni, and other initiatives are some of the ways by which the Federal Government is incrementally lifting Nigerians out of poverty. The Vice President stated this during his recent interactions with Nigerians across diverse backgrounds with visits to Karu, Mpape and Kubwa, all satellite towns in the FCT. In a statement obtained yesterday, which was signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande, the Vice President said more Nigerians would be lifted out of poverty if the is government re-elected for another term. According to him, “for the very first time in the history of this country, loans are being made available for petty traders, small traders, it is the love for the common man that informed this government’s decision to empower the poor.”

At Mpape community, Prof. Osinbajo told a gathering of artisans, women, community leaders and youths that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari was for the common people and had demonstrated same through the various empowerment schemes. “There is MarkeMoni; there is TraderMoni; the TraderMoni is for the petty traders, the small traders, selling groundnut and other small businesses; we give them N10,000 when they repay, they get N15,000, N20,000 and on and on like that. Explaining the rationale behind the micro-credit schemes of the Buhari administration, the Vice President said it was a step to help the traders move up “Because every one of us must start from somewhere; when you start poor, somebody must help you to become rich; if you are a small business woman, somebody will help so that you too will become a big business woman.” Continuing, he said, “that is why President Muhammadu Buhari started this TraderMoni so that market women can grow their businesses gradually and after a while, they too will have enough

money to be able to build their own houses and everything they want to do. “The MarketMoni is for the bigger trader and artisans, it starts at N100,000, but you must be part of a cooperative in order to benefit from the MarketMoni. “So, we are trying very hard, God helping us, if we are voted in, February 16, it’s the Next Level. Next Level for TraderMoni, for MarketMoni, for all the programmes that we are doing.” He assured the artisans that the Buhari administration was setting up a bank to be called the PeopleMoni Bank to lend money to artisans so that they could also grow. Earlier at Karu, Prof. Osinbajo addressed enthusiastic members of KaruJikwoyi Women Progressive Movement, assuring them of the commitment of the Buhari government to improve the lots of women. He told the women that petty traders among them would benefit from the TraderMoni scheme and other initiatives designed to uplift their lives and those of their families. The Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Abubakar, also addressed the women

on how various social intervention programmes would impact their lives. In Kubwa, the Vice President’s first point of call was the Yekini Aminu family at Information Quarters, where he was received by an excited and jubilant crowd among them youths who thronged the streets, danced and chanted ‘four plus four, four plus four, as the Vice President’s motorcade arrived Phase 4 area in Kubwa. After a brief chat with his host, the Aminu family, the Vice President addressed the crowd on the various empowerment schemes of the Federal Government and proceeded to the Gbazango area of Kubwa to continue his visit to the area. Vice President Osinbajo who had earlier launched the “Green Imperative”, an agricultural sector mechanization initiative, and chaired the monthly meeting of the National Economic Council, before leaving for the engagements in the FCT communities, returned to the State House to receive a coalition of Buhari 2019 support groups under the auspices of the “We Believe Movement”, who had embarked on a solidarity walk from the Unity Fountain to the Eagle Square.

Buhari to review BEDC’s operational licence over inefficient service Temitope Adebayo President Muhammadu Buhari has assured electricity consumers in Edo State that he would look into calls for the withdrawal of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC)’s operational licence over the company’s inefficiency. Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, revealed the President’s stance during the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Presidential campaign rally in Benin City, Edo State. Even as His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has urged President Buhari not to renew the licence of BEDC for what he described as the inability of the firm to provide electricity. At the rally, Obaseki said the president will ensure Edo people get electricity if he is re-elected, noting, “If we want light, if we want to progress, if we want industrialisation, if you want me to conclude everything I have started, we need to vote for President Buhari.” He explained: “We generate more than 700 megawatts of electricity in this city alone, but unfortunately, we do not have electricity and the reason is not President Buhari. The reason is that those people who were there before sold our DISCO to their friends. President Buhari told me even at the Oba’s Palace that we will do everything to make sure that Edo people get electricity.” Oba Ewuare II, at his palace, appealed to President Buhari to support Governor Obaseki’s quest to find an alternative source of electricity supply, noting, “Mr. President, I will not fail to mention the challenge of electricity supply in Edo State. Electricity supply is no doubt key to the development of any society. Unfortunately, over the years, the people of Edo State have experienced inadequate electricity supply by BEDC. “In fact, during one of the meetings of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, we issued a communiqué condemning the inefficiency of BEDC, including its estimated billing system.” “We also called for the withdrawal of the operational licence of BEDC. In this palace, traditional rulers appealed to the Federal Government to encourage and support the efforts of Edo State Government in seeking alternative source of electricity to meet the demands of the people,” Oba Ewuare II added.

Lagos guber: 2019 budget and Ambode’s battle for continuous relevance Patrick Okohue It has been predicted on many fronts that the 2019 elections in Nigeria was going to be an interesting one by all standards, but those who made those predictions may not even have factored Lagos State into the equation, however, recent developments are beginning to prove that if the election across the country is going to be interesting, that of Lagos will be super interesting. The governorship election in Lagos is going to be like none that has ever happened in the centre of excellence, that is if recent developments in the state are to be reckoned with. To start with, for the first time in the recent history of Lagos State, an incumbent governor of the state is going to watch the election from the sidelines without an opportunity to contest for a second term, as the powers that be successfully edged him out and gave his ticket to another person. When Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was elected Lagos State governor against all odds in 2015, he immediately hit the ground running and within a short period of time he was able to stamp his presence on many fronts, that people started speculating that his re-election when the time comes was only going to be a mere formality, but that was not to be as events towards the party primary of his political party the All Progressives Congress (APC) showed that he has fallen out with many leaders of his party and therefore no longer enjoy their backing. Ambode was eventually humiliated at a primary where his opponent and now anointed candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu defeated him in a landslide victory. Shortly before the primary was a rumour that there was move to impeach Ambode by the state House of Assembly, ostensibly with support from above, but that never happened, ever since then however, the rumour mills has not rested, this is more so as there seem to be no love lost between the state legislature and the governor who is seen by many of them as blocking their legitimate entitlement. There is no need pretending about the fact that there exist a frosty relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of government in Lagos State in recent time. What many do not contemplate is whether the two arms of government would be mature enough to ensure their differences do not affect the process of governance and the general wellbeing of lagosians at large. It all started during the July 22 Local Government Election in 2017,when the governor who allegedly was intent on building his own political structure in the state was said to have sponsored

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa

candidates against the wish of some party leaders, including lawmakers who believed they should be the ones to determine who gets what in their own constituencies, especially to secure their own political future. Though Ambode did not really succeed at installing his men as council Chairmen, he however went further to hand over list of people to be appointed as supervisory councillors to the elected chairmen of the 20 LG and the 37 LCDAs. Some LGs chairmen honoured his list while others like Alimosho (which is still largely being controlled by Ogbeni Rauf Aregebsole, former governor of Osun state) , Agege LG

(controlled by the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa’s own constituency) and Kosofe LG (a constituency where the right hand man of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC Lagos East Senatorial candidate ,Hon Bayo Osiniwo, aka, Pepper represents), threw Ambode’s list to the dustbin. The governor allegedly was angry at such development and subsequently decided to punish those LGs and LCDAs who went ahead to appoint their supervisory councillors in defiance to his wish by allegedly confiscating their allocation for 3 months. It took the intervention of the

party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for him to back down. According to a source from the State House, Tinubu had told Ambode to release their allocation and learn to concede certain things to some people ‘because you cannot win all in politics”, he further allegedly asked the governor to leave politics and face governance. It was after the resolution of this that he was able to go before the House to present the 2018 budget, though late in December 2017. To get back at him through the 2018 budget, the House moved all monies allegedly planted at budget sub- heads under different MDAs, which were not

We are representing the interest of our people and we will always do that. We have no resentment or bad blood; we are ready to receive the budget when the Executive is ready. The head of the Executive must be ready to perform his constitutional duties in this regard as stated in section 121 chapter 1 of the constitution

convincingly defended during budget defence to the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning’s, which means the governor cannot touch those funds without coming back to the House for budget reordering, otherwise, that would amount to misappropriation of funds, an impeachable offence under the law. Ordinarily, the House would overlook those low hanging fruits that could easily be plucked when the going was good, even when they discovered that the funds were planted by the governor to finance the Lagos City Bus Transport project, the House insisted the project had not been approved by them and cannot be funded under any guise. The governor it was learnt in retaliation also stopped the executive and legislative parley which comes up on quarterly basis. A forum through which the two arms of government dialogue and plan for the state, while the two parties also “smile home”. The executive legislative row got more dirty as year 2018 progressed , At this point, many of the lawmakers already got wind of the likelihood of him (Ambode) not securing a second term ticket, so they were ready to call his bluff. The battle line was finally drawn when 36 out of the 40 lawmakers signed in support of Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s candidature, against Governor Akinwumi Ambode, before the party’s primary election. The same House that was full of Ambode ‘s praise singers before then began to pick holes in every of his administrative style. The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa ,earlier in that year 2018 at a stakeholders/media parlay disowned the company introduced by Ambode (Vision-Scape) to take over refuse collection from Lagos Waste Management Authority ( LAWMA), Obasa said at that meeting that Vision-Scape was a ghost and not known to law of Lagos State. This is despite that the House had amended the environmental laws of the state to accommodate Vision-Scape when the going was good. As a follow-up to that, the State House of Assembly sometimes in October last year directed the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state to reactivate the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators in their areas to remove waste indiscriminately disposed. This followed an Urgent Matter of Public Importance raised by Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa Constitueny 1) on heaps of refuse scattered all over the state. Speaker Mudahsiru Obasa emphasised that the Lagos State Government does not know about Vision-Scape, stating that there are three arms of government which includes legislative, executive and judiciary, and that the state government ought to have consulted the House on Vision-Scape before they started operation. “We insist that we don’t know anything about Vision-Scape because we were not consulted before they started work. “We once wrote the Commissioner for

Lagos East: Youth groups endorse Osinowo, say ‘he is a philanthropist beyond politics’ Patrick Okohue Several youth groups on Wednesday adopted and endorsed the candidature of Hon. Bayo Osinowo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Lagos East Senatorial District describing him as masses-friendly. The groups across various Local Government and Local Council Development Area (LCDAs) in the district, gave the endorsement at the inauguration of the Hon. Bayo Osinowo Directorate of Youths and Students Mobilisation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the inauguration, which was organised by Mr Segun Olulade, the Director General of the Directorate, had about 200 youth leaders in attendance,. The event was held at the campaign office of Osinowo at Ketu, Lagos. Representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), South West; National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West and the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) were in attendance at the endorsement.

Speaking to NAN, Mr Saliu Adekunle, Vice President, NYCN, South West said that the group was endorsing Osinowo because he had helped so many students in the state. Adekunle said the student group believed that with Osinowo at the Senate, students would get more dividends of democracy, He expressed confidence that the APC candidate would win the contest as the group in the district would mobilise for the candidate. Also speaking, Mr Quadri Ayoade, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), NANS, South West said that Osinowo had been a grassroots politician with so many influence on the youths. According to Ayoade, efforts will be made to mobilise students and canvass for votes to ensure victory for Osinowo. Mr Adedayo Adebogun, the PRO, APC Volunteers, Lagos, a umbrella of volunteer youth groups for APC said that Osinowo had not failed the people as member of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Adebogun said that the APC senatorial candidate had been a great asset to the state as a unifier and stabiliser.

Prince Sadiq Adeesho, a former Vice President, NANS told NAN that the endorsement was an authentication of the interest and love people had for Osinowo. “He is a grassroots mobiliser; He is highly committed to the manifestos of the party and above all he is also a philanthropist beyond politics. “He has been able to affect so many people. We are happy to identify with him, Adeesho, the pioneer President of Omoluabi Youth group said. In his remarks, Olulade, who spoke highly of the candidature of Osinowo as a great politician of deep experience, said his influence cut across all sections, groups and strata of Lagos. Olulade, member representing Epe Constituency II at the Lagos Assembly said the youths were gather from all 16 LGAs and LCDAs that made up Lagos East Senatorial District. “All these are youths from Lagos East; we have the student unions across all our institutions in Lagos East. We have NANS, NYCN, NULASS, party youth leader and so many youth groups in this district. “They have all come here to declare support for the “Peperito” APC candidate

for Lagos East and all other candidates of the party. “They are all commit1ted to ensure that our candidate wins the election. They are our ambassadors, they are going out there to canvass for votes. “They have promised us that we are going to have one million votes in Lagos East. This is their promise and they have the capacity to deliver. They are ready for the job,” Olulade said. Mr Charles Odugbesi, a former State Secretary of APC and Director General, Hon. Bayo Osinowo Campaign said that he was overwhelmed with the support, saying that the support was a reassurance of victory for Osinowo. “With what I have seen today, it is an assurance that we have won the election. With the level of these youths’ intelligence and commitment, we have won already,” the director said. Odugbesi, who urged the youth groups to work hard, said God would reward their labour. He added that the youth groups had promised to deliver a million votes and that efforts should be made to double it and get two million votes.

2019 budget and Ambode’s battle for continuous relevance Continued from 17 Finance, Hon. Akinyemi Ashade not to pay VisionScape again and he should return any money he paid to them after our instruction to the coffers of the state government. We will get to that, when the time comes, but we have to do the needful now,” Obasa said in a rather hash tone. This was the level of frosty relationship until now, when against the annual culture of budget presentation before the fiscal year that the Lagos State Government is known for, nothing has been done till now. The delay in the 2019 budget presentation is still being explained away through bulk passing by the two arms of government. The Lagos State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Olusegun Banjo on Wednesday 2nd of January said the 2019 Budget proposal was already in the State House of Assembly. Banjo in a statement said that the budget proposal of N852.317 billion was forwarded by the governor to the House via a letter and that the budget was to have been read before the House on Dec. 24, 2018. The Commissioner said Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode had sent verbal information to present the budget on December 24, after the state Executive Council approval on Dec. 19. According to him, the presentation did not take place as the House was on recess and could not form a quorum. He said in order to meet the traditional presentation, a formal letter with the proposed budget attached, was sent to the House on Dec. 28. “It is expected that when the House reconvenes, the Speaker will inform members of the content of the budget proposal sent by the governor and take necessary action,” he said. In reaction to this however, members of the Assembly decided to clear the air on news making rounds in the state alleging they were responsible for the delay in the passage of the year 2019 budget. Rt. Hon. Obasa, during the plenary session of the House on Thursday 10th of January said that there is no reason for anybody to shift blame on the Parliament over the late presentation of the budget for year 2019, saying the House is always ready to receive and pass the budget if done properly. According to him, a letter was sent to the House through a correspondence dated 28th December,

Ambode

2018 which is a total deviation from the norm of the House, a situation whereby the Governor comes to the hallowed chamber to present the budget to the lawmakers. “We are representing the interest of our people and we will always do that. We have no resentment or bad blood; we are ready to receive the budget when the Executive is ready. The head of the Executive must be ready to perform his constitutional duties in this regard as stated in section 121 chapter 1 of the constitution,” he said. The usual procedure is that before the governor presents the budget, there is usually a bilateral meeting between the Executive and the Parliament where issues on budget provisions and needs of Lagosians are discussed and then the budget is presented. But the governor who would not want to sit to discuss with his “political enemies” on any issue for now, especially when he is not going to be the one to operate the budget, seem to care less about such meeting. He is also not unaware of the pent up anger against him by the lawmakers for not extending the ‘’hand of fellowship’’ to them during the Christmas period, like one of them who spoke with our correspondent said when he asked why the governor has not come to present the budget, he

responded, “don’t mind him, he is afraid of coming here, and we are waiting for him, the man didn’t do well at all, you won’t believe he didn’t give us anything for this Christmas, we are waiting for him, because either he likes it not he must come to present the budget before the House, all those ‘I have sent the budget before the House’, he is just wasting his time, he is still coming here, that one that members will be posing beside him to take pictures before, he will just come and go, nobody will reckon with him” the lawmaker said in a friendly chat with our correspondent. Another report has it that the governor wanted to present the budget quietly without the usual ceremony of inviting party members with singing and dancing accompanying a typical budget presentation in Lagos, or what is the point gathering together the party members who do not want you for a second term for the purpose of budget presentation There are however, insinuations that the bulk passing between the two arms of government may likely end on Monday as the governor is said to be prepared to come before the House for the proper laying of the budget. Whether or not this will happen on Monday, we are waiting to see. However, the none presentation of the budget is also said to be brewing another fire, as some top members of the psarty are believed to be angry with the governor, accusing him of deliberately delaying the budget presentation so that it will not be passed on time for there to be money to prosecute the election in the state, while on the other hand allegedly pumping money into the campaign of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. It was alleged by those who do not want Ambode to remain on the governorship seat that despite acknowledging that he understood that only God gives power to whoever He wishes, he has been working against the choice of the people in the governorship contest. According to them he has decided and started acting it out the process of undermining his own party and that of Mr. Sanwo-Olu and is now actively funding Mr. Jimi Agbaje of the PDP. They further alleged that up till today, Ambode has given Agbaje close to 2.35 Billion Naira. These sums they alleged were given in staggered stages. It started with 90 Million, 250 Million, 250 Million,

1 billion transferred through Access Bank. Another 350 Million was given on the day that APC rally was disrupted. The last sum was brought by Mr. Steve Ayorinde to a house in Ikoyi owned by Mr. Dewumi Ogunsanya at McPherson Street. The first three sums of 90, 250, 250 installments were brought by Mr. Bunmi Ariyo, a noted assistant of Mr. Ambode. Akinwumi Ambode is said to be determined to undermine the will of the people by assuring Mr. Agbaje of PDP that they can rig the election for his party provided he will allow him, Ambode to control his government and look away from his alleged atrocities. As a result of this development, a move is again said to be in the offing to convince the leaders of the party on why Ambode must be impeached by the state Assembly, though the leaders are said not to be buying it because of the implication of impeaching a governor so close an election. One of the alleged prime movers of this is Mr. Mobolaji Sanusi, Managing Director, Lagos State Signage & Advertisement Agency (LASAA). It is alleged that Sanusi who in cohort with a few implacable elements within and outside of Lagos State government is hell bent on destroying Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Sanusi has denied any involvement in any such plot, saying he could never betray his principal. In a statement debunking the allegation, Sanusi said: “It is ridiculous and laughable that some disgruntled elements wherever can sit on quicksand to concoct this spurious accusation. They have failed, ab initio in this satanical, ill conceived plot. “I remain a loyal appointee of His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State. The detractors are looking for relevance where they’ll get none and their plot to divide the APC in the state has failed abysmally. “I am too ingrained in how to make LASAA an enviable institution in the past three years and to also make an appreciable impact in the governance of Lagos than to be detracted by the handiwork of proponents of fake news that we’re all trying to remove from our social media hemisphere. I remain loyal to my principal,” he said. It is believed that despite the approach that may be employed from any quarter to pretend that all is well with the Lagos State APC family, it is only a matter of time before the truth will come forth.

Ex-govs clamouring for senatorial seats is demeaning - Oba Idris Kosoko Urges them to play advisory roles

it coupled with the existing lineage. I grew up in a disciplined environment. My family was from a Muslim background before I converted to Christianity. I am naturally a self-determined person without relying on family fortune. I picked from my mother. She was a sort that will encourage you to do whatever you set your mind on. She loved all the children equally but did not influence anyone’s life decision. After the death of my father in 1972, she became the pillar of the house. My mother died on January 6, 2015, and coincidentally, April 12, the day my father died was same day I was appointed as the King many years after. Although he was not a king, but my forefather was. I inherited the throne from my grandmother side.

Stories: Chris Onuoha His Royal Majesty, Oba Oladele Idris Kosoko, the Ogundeyi II, Oniworo of Iworo kingdom in Olorunda local goverment area, Lagos became the 24th Oba of Iworo on April 12, 2017. The former federal house of representative member, Badagry constituency in the third republic who was also a retired soldier under 3rd Marine Command assumed the throne of his forefathers having chosen by Iworo Council of Obas and given the staff of office by the Lagos State Ministry of Local government and community affairs as a first class Oba. After retiring from the military services in 1979, and acquiring academic degrees from home and abroad, he went into business and politics. Oba Idris Kosoko made an impact as an instrument in establishing the Ministry of Science and Technology when he was former Chairman, Committee on Science and Technology, Federal House of Representative. Being a Muslim by birth, he later converted to Christianity and became a Superior Evangelist in the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC). Oba Idris Kosoko will be marking two years on throne come April, 2019. In this chat with Vanguard Royalty, he recounts deeds over the years, challenge government on infrastructural inadequacy in his community. In few months’ time, you will be clocking two years on the throne. How has it been? It’s really challenging, but with God, everything has been under his control. Without cross, there will be no crown. Some challenges like minor disputes, land matters, domestic and social among others will always be there but ability to resolve them is the reason we are installed as custodian of peoples’ heritage and culture. We are very close to the grassroot more than the government and dealing with their issues is very tasking but we always overcome with wisdom. I normally have a quarterly town hall meeting as a platform to address the community, listen and seek their views about how to move the community forward. In all, I give glory to God. Which areas would you say are more challenging and what would you count as an achievement within this short period of your reign? Last year, 2018, the community built a standard police station which was donated to the Lagos state government to serve Iworo community. Security is very important for a rapid development to any community. We built the police station to help curtail social vices within the community. Iworo is a tourist zone with beautiful beaches around us. Whispering Palm is in Iworo, including Suntan beach and other decent leisure outlets. We cannot compromise security of the visitors including investors that are already trooping to the community. Secondly, I created more streets, built resident quarters, standard shopping plaza to compliment what is on ground. You can see also, that Lagos state government is constructing a standard road starting from Aradagun junction on Badagry Expressway connecting Iworo to Akume in Awori and leading to other parts of Lagos within the creek axis. This is very symbolic because many investors who are coming to Iworo community to establish factories will have good access road and it will benefit the community on employable basis. But at this juncture, I must say I am not pleased with the deplorable state of our major road, the Badagary Expressway. The challenge of Badagry expressway is affecting us seriously. It is a federal road and I am disappointed that Babatunde Fashola, being Minister of Works was a former governor of Lagos state. He has neglected the road and has never deemed it fit

To become a king is not easy especially with many qualified contestants aiming at the same throne. How did you overcome yours? There was really a challenge, big one. Nobody gets to the throne on a platter of gold. My mother initially discouraged me because of what you mentioned earlier as kings being diabolic. It amounts to even losing life and my mother said; she doesn’t want to lose me. She advised me to forget about it saying “after all, I have been blessed with wealth.” I told her, that the community has found me capable and I would not force myself if they say no. After I convinced her that it is community choice, she called me and blessed me to go ahead. It was a big tussle then. We were about 7 contenders to the throne but I would say, God chose me before the people. But all that has been settled. The others had no choice but to agree on who the king makers chose.

Oba Kosoko

to embark on-the-spot assessment of the road. Sometime ago, when we invited President Buhari to come and see things for himself, he flew over our terrain with four helicopter and landed at Seme to commission a project. What the federal government generates from this road is huge in terms of revenue. Government cannot spend up to three quarter of the money they make on this road to put it in order. It is a serious threat to our economy and the entire people of Badagry who are cut out of seamless business transactions. Badagry is a tourist town and the situation is not helping the tourism sector. Coming to my palace achievements, I appointed both lesser and higher chiefs that help pilot the affairs of the Oba Iworo in Council. Community wise, minor domestic issues were put in check. Before I came on the throne, many homes within the community were living in separation as a result of amenable domestic issue. I frowned at it sternly and designed means of curtailing it. I established a community law and devised what I call ‘palace punishment’ where offenders are meant to sweep or cut grass for a period of time as a debasing punishment in the glare of the entire community. The exercise worked, and adherence to the community law as I speak to you now is well observed. I am also working on the area of curbing illicit drinks and hard drugs within the community with the help of security agents. This involves not only the consumers, but also the dealers. I have opened some jetties to make other communities within my kingdom accessible. I am also appealing to the Lagos state government to build more jetties to compliment what we have for now. Iworo community is one of the ancient towns in Lagos State created over 400 years ago. We are basically farmers and fishermen and also, have rich culture which forms our enviable heritage. Iworo have many festivals celebrated annually. They are Egun, Oro, Agun, Gelede and Agbe festivals. I have personally set up committee to upgrade these festivals to attract tourists and to enhance the community visibility in the global tourism map. You are an evangelist and at the same time a traditional ruler. How do you pilot both opposite positions with an assumed insinuation that traditional rulers are somehow fetish? It is not true when people say kings are fetish. Ordained Kings are neither idolaters nor

fetish. Let me tell you. People misinterpret the role of Obas and perhaps, term it fetish without adequate knowledge of their responsibilities. David in the Bible was a king. When Moses was called upon to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, he confronted Pharaoh with a mere stick, and when God commanded him to throw the stick on the floor, it turned to a snake. You cannot call that fetish because it is just a pronouncement from God. The tongue is the authority and kings are meant to exercise this authority without bias. Don’t forget that an Oba is ordained from God and installed by the people. All those references to traditional practice are not a mark of fetishes. In my palace, there are people and hierarchy that handle certain things for the palace. God says in the scripture that I came to the world not to destroy the existing law but not to lead people astray too. That’s why there are palace chiefs that perform certain duties without a king apparently getting involved in all things. In that case, has your faith as an evangelist been affected with any palace traditional rites or performance that questions your religious belief? It is a very logical question. Like I said, I have been asked this question time over. As a Superior Evangelist in the Celestial Church of Christ, and as a traditional king, there is a mutual understanding to carry everyone along without necessarily affecting my faith in God. Some chiefs are designated to oversee certain things in the palace. The community is not a one religion entity. There are Muslims, Christians and traditionalists in the community. It is in the King’s position to accommodate all and the people are happy with me. The people have existed from creation, and a king cannot come and abolish their heterogeneous rights overnight. For me, I will not participate but must ensure that everyone live in peace. In my palace you will find ingredients of prayers such as kolanut, oil, salt and other things. My palace stool is an altar of monarchy. There is nothing fetish under it. As a superior Evangelist in my church, I follow what is written in the bible. My faith as a Christian has not tilted despite being a traditional ruler. As a growing child, did you have any inclination that you will be a king? Kingship is not what I grew up knowing but I may say my disciplined nature paved way for

…and what is the relationship like, with your fellow contestants? I extended the hand of fellowship to them because kingship is a call to serve and the palace doesn’t belong to one person alone. I told them, if it is anybody’s turn, I will support, but if God has chosen me, I need all the support to succeed. However, only few of them had come forward for common engagements but during Town hall meetings, they all come for mutual deliberations. What is your relationship with other Obas in Lagos especially Oba of Lagos? I have a healthy relationship with all the Obas in Lagos State. I am a member of the State Council of Obas. It is a composition of about 86 monarchs out of over 200 Obas we have in Lagos state. I have been very active in State council of Oba’s projects, including the recently held Conference of the Yoruba Obas in Ile-Ife where I participated actively in certain deliberations that concern Obaship in the Yoruba land and diaspora. Nigerians will be going to poll to elect new leaders soon. As a former Federal House member, how do you see Nigeria politics now? Yes, I was formerly a member of Federal House of Representative during the shortlived Shagari regime, representing Badagary Constituency. In my own opinion, Nigeria democracy has come to stay without military interference anymore. We are growing politically but has not gotten there yet. Developments you see today are as a result of democracy but more need to be done. However, one major challenge I see is the recycling of old politicians maintaining positions back to back. I am not happy with former Governors of States still clamouring for Senatorial seats. A governor, for instance is the controller of a state under which Senators, Federal House members and State Assembly comes under. It doesn’t make any sense, having governed a state for eight years, yet still stoop low to vie for a senatorial position. It’s absurd. He knows the state laws. Which law is he going to make again? I will advice ex-governors to sit back and play advisory role and allow upcoming ones to take over. As a traditional ruler, our role is to preach peace and tranquility in our various communities, and never allowing anyone to disrupt the democratic process we are building on. People should come out and exercise their civil roles and elect who they think will work for them.

Daily Times Nigeria Saturday, January 19, 2019

Sudan police fire live rounds outside home of slain protester Sudanese police fired live ammunition at mourners outside the home of a protester who died early on Friday from a gunshot wound sustained the night before. About 2,000 mourners gathered in the Burri neighbourhood where the man, Moawia Bashir Khalil, 60, was shot on Thursday. According to local reports, Khalil was killed inside his home for helping unarmed protesters hide from security forces. The procession turned into a spontaneous anti-government demonstration, the latest in a series of protests against the leadership of President Omar al-Bashir. The capital, Khartoum, has witnessed weeks of pitched battles between police and demonstrators over the state of the economy and other issues. “We are not scared, we will not stop” the protesters shouted, as they took to the streets of Khartoum’s eastern district of Burri, the hub of an anti-government rally late on Thursday. Video footage showed men and women, many wearing masks, shouting slogans against the government as a thick plume of smoke - resulting from burning tyres and rubbish - billowed behind them. A child and a doctor were also killed by gunfire in Burri on Thursday, said the Sudan Doctors’ Committee (SDC), a group linked to the opposition. Before police opened fire on Friday, some mourners pelted officers nearby with rocks and overturned and destroyed a police truck, witness video showed. The mourners blocked the main street in Burri with boulders and chanted “there is no God but God!” and “Martyr! Martyr!”. Several were wailing and crying and some were carrying

Sudanese flags. There were no immediate reports of casualties. After Friday’s shooting outside Khalil’s home, thousands attended his funeral at a cemetery across from a police officers’ club. Clashes with police had calmed by the time protesters transported the body to Burri Mosque. Demonstrations also spread to other cities and towns, including the Red Sea city of Port Sudan, the provincial capital of Gadaref and in the agricultural hub of Atbara, where the first protest broke out in December after a government decision to raise bread prices. The protests have since escalated into broader demonstrations against alBashir’s three decades of iron-fisted rule that have triggered deadly clashes with security forces. Officials say at least 24 people have died, but human rights groups have put the death toll much higher. Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Khartoum, said the demonstrations showed little sign of slowing down. “These protests are set to continue. Today is Friday, usually, a day when protesters have an easy excuse to gather in mosques at the end of the prayer,” Vall said. “Police have [in the past] been able to stand in areas where protests were planned and prevent hundreds from congregating. But they are not expected to do that today because the anger is rising and will only get bigger as the hours of the day progress.” Last week, Amnesty International said more than 40 people had been killed and more than 1,000 arrested. Human Rights Watch said the dead included children and medical staff. Before the protests, AFP reported

Empty streets and burned vehicle as a result of the protest that one of their journalists saw security personnel, many in plain clothes, stationed across the downtown area of Khartoum and along the expected route of Thursday’s march. Several army vehicles, mounted with machine guns, were stationed outside the palace. The Sudanese Professionals Association - a trade union representing doctors, teachers and engineers among others - has stepped into the vacuum created by the arrest of many opposition leaders. Mohammed Yousef, a spokesman for the association, said demonstrators were prepared to continue to press their grievances while remaining patient and wise. “The people of Sudan are known for being particularly determined, stubborn, and for playing the long game. They are not hot-headed, nor do they despair easily,” he said. Despite the crackdown, the

movement has grown to become the biggest threat to Bashir’s rule since he took power in 1989. The protesters accuse Bashir’s government of mismanagement of key sectors of the economy and of pouring funds into a military response Sudan can ill afford. Sudan has suffered from a chronic shortage of foreign currency since South Sudan broke away in 2011, taking with it the lion’s share of oil revenues. That triggered soaring inflation and saw the cost of food and medicines more than double, with frequent shortages in major cities, including Khartoum. Al-Bashir has blamed the protests on foreign “agents” and said the unrest would not lead to a change in government, challenging his opponents to seek power through the ballot box. He has ordered the police to use “less force” against protesters, but deadly violence during the demonstrations continues.

DR Congo slams African Union’s call to suspend election result The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has rebuked the African Union (AU) over its calls to suspend the announcement of the final results of its presidential elections, insisting that the Constitutional Court assessing the vote’s legality was impartial. The court will rule on Friday on an appeal filed by election runner-up Martin Fayulu - who says he was cheated of his victory in the December 30 election. “The court is independent,” government spokesman Lambert Mende said on Friday. “I don’t think it is the business of the government or even of the African Union to tell the court what it should do.” At a summit in Addis LOSS OF DOCUMENT

g 21 Kenya court orders five suspects held over Nairobi attack

Five suspects have appeared in court in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in connection with Tuesday’s deadly hotel attack. The siege, which lasted more than 18 hours and was claimed by the armed group, al-Shabab, left at least 21 people dead. The court on Friday granted a request by the prosecution to hold the suspects - four Kenyans and a Canadian national - for 30 days in order to conclude their investigations. “The team of investigators has so far covered considerable ground in the investigations,” Noordin Haji, director of public prosecution, said in a statement on Friday. “The investigations into this matter are complex and transnational and would, therefore, require sufficient time and resources to uncover the entire criminal syndicate,” Haji added. The suspects, identified as Joel Nganga, Oliver Muthee, Osman Ibrahim, Gladys Kaari and Guleid Abdihakim, were arrested on Wednesday in the Nairobi neighbourhoods of Eastleigh and Ruaraka, hours after the hotel siege ended. George Kinoti, Kenya’s director of criminal investigation, said on Wednesday those arrested were being treated as key suspects because they were in close contact with the attackers. The al-Qaeda-linked group said it carried out the attack in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Wednesday all the gunmen behind the attack were killed, adding that Kenya will hunt down every individual that was involved in the siege. On Friday morning, businesses in Nairobi’s commercial hub of Eastleigh were closed in solidarity with victims of Tuesday’s attack. Traders told Al Jazeera the attack was an attempt by the armed group to hurt the city’s business environment. “We closed our businesses in solidarity with those affected by the attack. We are saddened by the situation in Nairobi,” Abdi Mohamed Aden, a shopowner, told Al Jazeera. “They [the attackers] are trying to incite people against each other but that will not happen.” Mohamed Ali Abdi, a trader in the eastern suburb, said Tuesday’s attack left people shaken but determined. “We closed down our shops because we are mourning the death of our brothers, our fellow Kenyans who lost their lives. We want to tell those who want to destroy Kenya, we will destroy you,” he said. Of the victims of Tuesday’s siege, 16 were Kenyan, one was British, one was American and three were of African descent but their nationalities had not yet been determined, according to police. The attack at DusitD2 was the first in Nairobi since the Westgate mall attack in 2013, which left more than 60 dead.

Caroline Wozniacki disappointed but defiant after Australian Open loss

A bitterly disappointed Caroline Wozniacki said she was leaving Melbourne Park with her head held high Friday, despite arch-rival Maria Sharapova ending her dream of defending the Australian Open title. Sharapova upset her in a three-set thriller to reach the last 16 at Dane’s expense 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. World number three Wozniacki spent more than a decade chasing her maiden Grand Slam and said it was tough to accept she was now out of the running to retain the trophy. “I’m a competitor, I love to win, I hate to lose — I hate losing more than I love

winning,” she said. But the 28-year-old refused to beat herself up about the loss, saying she had left everything on the court in her third round clash against the Russian. “Some days you lose,” she said. “As long as you give it your all, as long as I fought for every point and was really trying to do everything in my power to win, I can’t really blame myself. “Of course, I’m disappointed that I’m not through to the fourth round… I did all I could and just came up short.” Wozniacki refused to blame the loss on the rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis she revealed during the offseason, which

sometimes leaves her so exhausted it is hard to move. She said that was not the case when facing Sharapova and she felt fine on court. The former world number one also dismissed suggestions that the pressure of entering the tournament as defending champion had weighed on her, insisting she had enjoyed the experience. “I actually didn’t find it hard at all. I find it kind of pleasurable. It was nice and exciting,” she said. “It’s a luxury for me to have achieved winning a slam and being number one and winning a lot of other tournaments.”

Egypt took over as hosts for the tournament two weeks ago after Cameroon was stripped of the event, and as part of their fast-moving bid want to start on June 14, a Friday, instead of June 15 a day later. The Egyptian authorities want to attract as many fans as possible to have

their opening ceremony in the cavernous 75,000 capacity Cairo International Stadium, and therefore want to stage it on the first day of the weekend, which for them is a Friday. “We are looking into it,” CAF director Nathalie Rabe. “Nothing has been agreed to yet,” she said, adding that a decision would be swiftly forthcoming. This will be the fourth CAN staged in Egypt, which has been expanded to 24 teams for the first time, up from 16 in 2017 in Gabon.

Seyi Olofinjana backs Super Eagles for Nations Cup Glory Ex-International Seyi Olofinjana has backed Nigeria for success in the forthcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations holding in Egypt. The former Wolves, Stoke City, and Hull City midfielder is tipping the Super Eagles under Coach Gernot Rohr for a glorious outing in Egypt. “I’ve been to a few Cup of Nations and after watching the players at the World Cup, I think the Eagles can do well in Egypt,” Olofinjana said. “I think the country should be looking at perhaps doing more this time, only that it is always difficult playing against the Northern Africans. “Slightly, the Northern National teams are a bit tactical, they try to run, they try to create space and all… “But we also dwell on their weakness too, if the sun comes out and we always try to use that chance to get our goals. Meanwhile, We have a coach who knows how to bring everybody together, and the boys we’ve got have a bit of experience – players like (captain) John Mikel Obi, and

Republic latest by January 27. “I have been told that we are no longer traveling to Saudi Arabia for the friendly match. I was not giving any reason for the trip’s cancelation,” Maikaba said. The Flying Eagles will play in Group A alongside hosts Niger, South Africa and Burundi in the competition that will start in Niamey from February 2nd to 17th.

Israel-based Chikeluba Ofoedu begs for a chance with Super Eagles Chikeluba Ofoedu, Maccabi Tel Aviv attacker, has called on Gernot Rohr to give him a chance to prove himself with the Super Eagles. Since moving to Europe after emerging as the revelation of the 2011/2012 Nigerian league season, Ofoedu has continued to impress in front of goal. The attacker scored his seventh goal for Maccabi Tel Aviv when they drew 1-1 with Hapoel Tel Aviv in a recent derby. “Coach Rohr should give me a chance with the Super Eagles,” Ofoedu said. “My focus now is to play for the Super Eagles as I feel I am ripe for it and my teammates have been asking me why I am not in my country’s national team. “I know how difficult it is to break into the Super Eagles due to the numerous established and emerging talents at the disposal of the manager but I think I can bring something to the team’s attack.” At 19, he joined Rangers

International from UNTH Healers FC and scored 12 goals to emerge the club’s top scorer. Ofoedu then moved to Turkey to join division one side Trabzonpor in 2012 and went on to play for other first division sides, Karşıyaka, Samsunspor and Eskişehirspor till July 2017, scoring double figures for each of the teams before moving to Maccabi.

“I enjoyed my time in Turkey as I was loved by fans of all the teams I played for,” Ofoedu said. “I needed a new challenge and so I did not hesitate to jump at the opportunity to join Maccabi. The Super Eagles are set to play Seychelles in a dead rubber final 2019 AFCON qualifier and four days later, will host Egypt in an international friendly in Asaba.

Kwara United rallies fans for support ahead of Enyimba clash

Ahmed Musa. “They can bring the younger ones with them so that we do not just to go the tournament to enjoy it but to push ourselves to the next level,” he concluded.

Ahead of the crucial clash with Enyimba FC of Aba, the Chairman of Kwara United FC, Thompson Oladimeji, has begged the club’s faithful to double their support for the Harmony Boys. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Kwara United started their campaign this season with a draw at home against Sunshine Stars before been hammered by MFM in their

second game in Lagos. Reacting to the club’s two games played this term, Oladimeji believed his wards can still soar this season and therefore called for total support. “I have spoken with the players and the technical crew, and I want to assure our supporters that they will see maximum improvement in our next game. “I understand the love that Kwarans have for this team, and I want the support to continue so that we can all achieve great things at the end of the season,’’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warns Manchester United players over complacency Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Manchester United of the dangers of complacency as they prepare to face Brighton after beating Tottenham to extend their perfect record under the interim boss. Solskjaer has won all six of his matches in charge since taking over from Jose Mourinho on December 19 and will look to keep that sequence going at Old Trafford on Saturday. Arguably the most impressive victory in the sequence came last Sunday when Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Wembley thanks to a Marcus Rashford goal and an eyecatching goalkeeping display from David de Gea. “As I’ve said before, you go into every single game as a Manchester United coach, as a player or manager, thinking you’ll win the next one, that’s just the nature of this club,” said Solskjaer. “We’ve had six good games but the next one is the most important one. You cannot be too confident. It’s complacency you have to be wary of. It’s the other side of it. “I want players to be confident but not be complacent and take their foot off the pedal because that’s a big difference for me. I want them go into games full of confidence, taking people on, getting the crowd with them because that’s what it’s about.” Solskjaer has yet to see the best of forward Alexis Sanchez, who missed

last Sunday’s win at Tottenham with a minor hamstring problem. “He’s champing at the bit in training,” he said. He’s attitude has been fantastic in training and I’m looking forward to seeing him.” The interim boss has played down the suggestion that he is responsible for coaxing better performances out of the players since last month’s departure of Mourinho, adding that he was confident the former United manager would be back in work soon. He said: “Yeah, why shouldn’t he? He’s a fantastic manager and with the results, he’s had I don’t think he’ll be struggling for work.” Fellaini injured Solskjaer said Marouane Fellaini is facing up to four weeks out of action with a calf injury. The Belgium midfielder has made just two substitute appearances for United since Solskjaer replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho. Newspaper reports this week suggested that Fellaini, who signed a two-year contract in June, would be allowed to leave during the January transfer window. His injury would appear to have ended the prospect of that happening, while Solskjaer has given the midfielder some reassurance by suggesting that he has an “X-factor”. “There’s an X-factor in different players. We all know Felli’s X-factor.

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool laying groundwork for sustained success He’ll be working hard to get back in when all the big games are coming as well.” With Fellaini injured, Solskjaer has suggested that Scott McTominay’s chances of going out on loan may have receded. Celtic have been in negotiations with United about taking the Scotland midfielder on loan, but the caretaker manager appears reluctant to sanction a deal. He said: “Scott is working hard. He’s a young boy I still believe in. We’re working on his contract. With the injuries to Felli as well and the squad we have, I’m not sure we’re going to see any movement.”

Fabinho warns against mistakes as Liverpool prepare for another ‘final’ Fabinho is hoping to see Liverpool avoid “silly” mistakes as they prepare to treat every Premier League fixture in an ongoing title challenge as a “final”. The Reds have positioned themselves at the front of the race for English top-flight supremacy, with a four-point lead held over defending champions Manchester City. A solitary reversal at the Etihad Stadium represents the only blot on their copybook to date, with Jurgen Klopp having been able to maintain momentum and grind out results when required. Fabinho, though, is aware that there can be no letting up, with a man who has previously tasted success in Ligue 1 with Monaco aware of what is required to get over the line. The versatile Brazilian told Liverpool’s official website: “It’s true that I did well in that league but it’s a different league. “We won the league; I think it helped me for the future, as is the case now. “We have to take things game by game. Our next ‘final’ is against Crystal Palace and we really have to treat this game as if it were a final. “There’s still a long way to go, it’s a long league season, so we have to keep calm, take things game by game and keep going.” He added, ahead of a home date with Palace on Saturday: “Liverpool are really consistent and defensively sound. “We’re a team that attacks, we’ve always got a lot of numbers in the opposition half. When it comes to

a player putting a cross in, there are always lots of bodies in the opposition box for us. “And, despite not being a defensive-minded team, we’re always ready to go on the counter-attack, our system is set up for that. “The team is going through a great patch, every player’s confidence is sky high, and all of this has contributed to the team’s good form.” While confidence is brimming at Anfield, a narrow 1-0 victory over Brighton last time out helped to highlight how deep the Reds are going to have to dig in order to end their long wait for title glory. Fabinho added: “Yes, the last

game was an example of this. We had a lot of possession, Brighton put a lot of men behind the ball, so we had to be patient and try to work hard to find an opening to split the defence and get the ball to our forwards. “It was difficult but when we got behind them we managed to cause them problems. “Perhaps the game this weekend will be similar in this regard. We’ve got to be patient and not squander possession with silly passes. “We’ve got to play on the attack and try to get through their defence but while being patient, knowing if we get the ball to our attackers they can cause a lot of damage to the opponent.”

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool’s Premier League rivals that the leaders are laying the foundations for long-term success. Klopp’s side sit four points clear at the top as they chase Liverpool’s first English title since 1990. But the Liverpool boss does not want this season’s potential title triumph to be a one-off. The German believes the willingness of Liverpool’s owner John W Henry to reward star players with improved contracts is key to fulfilling his ambition for sustained success. Andrew Robertson is the latest to commit himself to the club. His new five-year contract follows long-term deals for Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson. “In general it’s always a good sign to have the opportunity to extend contracts early,” Klopp told reporters on Friday. “If we can keep these boys together, we are in the middle of our development, so it’s good news for Liverpool. “These 17-18 players plus the really young boys, that’s the squad of the future.

It should be like this. It’s investment, the club gave us the opportunity to do it. Really nice.” Klopp is yet to win a trophy since taking charge at Liverpool but there are plenty of signs he is on the verge of ending that drought this term. While Klopp would not be drawn on just how successful Liverpool can be with their current crop, he agreed they are now strong enough, on and off the pitch, for a period of challenging for major honours. “Progress is something everybody should expect. The club gave us a fantastic opportunity to bring in outstanding players, to keep outstanding players. My job is to make sure we perform on the pitch,” he said. “Where will we be in two or three years? I have no idea but the age group is good. This season will not finish our development. “It doesn’t look like we’ll lose any key player (and) we build a new training ground, another step in the future.” Liverpool are likely to offer promising youngster, Ki-Jana Hoever, a professional contract after he turned 17 on Friday.

Cristiano Ronaldo expected in Madrid for tax fraud trial Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is expected back in Madrid on Tuesday to attend a trial for tax evasion in which Spanish prosecutors are asking for a 23-month prison sentence and a fine. The Portuguese striker, who left Real Madrid for Juventus last July, is expected to plead guilty after he agreed to a settlement worth €18.8m with Spanish tax authorities last summer. However, he is unlikely to serve any time in prison, as Spanish law states a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation. The prosecutor’s office said it was seeking a fine of €5.7m ($6.5m), which it said Ronaldo had already paid, as well as interest of about €1m. That fine, expected to be confirmed on Tuesday, is part of the total agreed in the earlier settlement, judicial sources said. Ronaldo, 33, who has helped take Juventus to the top of Italian football’s Serie A, will have to travel to Madrid

immediately after playing for Juve against Chievo on Monday. The trial was initially expected to take place on Monday, but the prosecutor’s office said the date was now set for Tuesday. It is expected to be concluded on the same day and be short, with officials saying the hearing will only require Ronaldo to confirm he accepts the deal.

Chelsea in talks with Bayern Munich target Callum Hudson-Odoi Chelsea are in talks with teenage winger Callum Hudson-Odoi about a new contract. The 18-year-old, who has made 13 first-team appearances but is yet to start a Premier League game, has been the subject of a £35m bid by Bayern Munich. He has 18 months left on his contract, and Chelsea want him to stay. There have been reports he has been offered a deal worth up to £70,000 a week, but playing time is understood to be the most important issue for him. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has been critical of Bayern after they went on the record about wanting to sign HudsonOdoi. Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said the German club

“really want to sign him”. “It’s not professional, because they are talking about a player under contract with Chelsea,” said Sarri. “So they didn’t respect our club, I think.” Sarri, who said he wants to sign two players in January, last week reiterated he wants the teenager to stay at Stamford Bridge – and has played him in their past three matches. Hudson-Odoi played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup, started their 1-0 defeat at Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final and came on as a late substitute in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League on 12 January.
