to the newsmen on Monday by the Head, Communications and Servicom Department of FIRS, Mr. Wahab Gbadamosi. The breakdown of the figure showed that N3.3 trillion was generated in 2016, N4.02 trillion in 2017 and N5.32 trillion was realised in 2018, making it the highest revenue generated in the last three years. But the non-oil tax revenue raked stood at N2.149 trillion in 2016; N2.5 trillion in 2017 and N2.852 trillion in 2018. According to the document, the FIRS under the leadership of Babatunde Fowler designed initiatives to ensure a robust

tax administration that is beneficial to all stakeholders. The document quoted Fowler as saying, “the achievements mentioned above also demonstrates the diversification of the Nigerian economy by the Federal Government. “This does not mean that we have left behind the oil tax revenue. It grew from N1.15 trillion in 2016 to N1.52 trillion in 2017 and N2.52 trillion in 2018. Non-oil tax revenue is still over in excess of the oil tax revenue. “We also do collect four per cent in terms of cost of the collection but only for non-oil revenue collected. On oil revenue collection, we do not get any commission and we have been able to make

sure that our services are more efficient and convenient to taxpayers. “This has brought about a considerable reduction in the cost of collection of actual taxes. “In 2016, it was 2.6 per cent, 2017, 2.49 per cent and 2018, 2.14 per cent, meaning that our actual cost of collection is heading downwards based on the efficiency and technology that we are deploying to tax collection. “Some of the ICT initiatives that we have continued to build on are the e-payment channels which makes it convenient and easy to pay taxes anywhere in the world and to also download receipts of payment from any point one so desires”, he said.

Buhari’s tough decisions will be in Nigeria’s interest - SGF Mathew Dadiya with agency report The Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustafa, says the tough decisions President Muhammadu Buhari will take during his second term, will be in the interest of Nigeria. Speaking with reporters in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, Mustapha allayed fears that the second term of Buhari would be tough on Nigerians. Buhari had said his second term would be tough, sparking tension in some quarters. But the SGF described the president as a good man, who had the trust of ordinary Nigerians and would like to see improvement in their lives,

while the nation moved to the next level. Mustapha also identified the ban on rice and fertilizer importation as one of the tough decisions taken by the government and which yielded positive results by boosting local production, among other things. “When we came to power in 2015, about 27 states couldn’t pay salaries; we had to take tough decisions like giving them bail-out and Paris Club refund. These are tough decisions,” Mustapha said. “By such tough decisions we are able to raise the number of rice farmers from 4 million to 12 million and we are about 98 per cent self-sufficient in rice. “Due to the establishment of many fertilizer blending plants after we banned the

importation of fertilizer, the product is now available and the prize is going down.” The SGF said antigraft institutions such as Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) as well as the Code of Conduct Bureau were being strengthened to tackle corruption. He said that with the strengthening of such institutions, corruption would be nipped in the bud. “It’s better to prevent it (corruption) instead of spending a lot of money prosecuting corruption cases,” Mustapha said.

Why we are investigating Atiku’s son-in-law – EFCC Doosuur Iwambe, Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said that the commission has commenced investigation into alleged money laundering by the Finance Director of Atiku Abubakar’s group of companies, Alhaji Babalele Abdullahi. Explaining why Abdullahi was arrested by its operatives

in Abuja on Monday, Spokesman of EFCC, Mr. Tony Orilade, noted that there anti-graft agency is investigating a case of money laundering against Abdullahi. The EFCC however declined to disclose the figure involved in the laundering allegation against Abdullahi. It was gathered that Atiku’s son-in-law was ‘’taken away’ by security agents on the suspicion that he could use hard currency to

unduly influence the outcome of many polls taking place in the country. Although the EFCC had initially kept mute over the arrest of Abdullahi, the agency on Monday tried to douse rising tension over the detention of the man, admitting that he was in its custody but did not indicate the exact location where the man was being kept. 2019 Presidential election: Atiku goes to court Tunde Opalana, Abuja

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will today file a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to invalidate the outcome of the February 23 presidential poll. Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission last Wednesday declared President Muhammadu Buhari winner of the presidential election. According to INEC, Buhari was re-elected for a second term, having polled 15,191,847 million votes, winning 19 states to defeat 72 other candidates including the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, who polled 11,255,978 million votes. National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, made party’s decision to approach the Supreme Court known while addressing members before the Expanded Caucus Meeting of the party went into business session on Monday. He said: “The decision to go to court has been finalised and agreed and the process is on. The lawyers have been assembled. We may be in court today (yesterday) or tomorrow (today). No one can

stop us. “No matter the propaganda of APC, we will seek justice till the last drop of our blood to the highest court of the land. We believe justice will be done and God Almighty will give justice”. Secondus also indicted some critical stakeholders in the Nigerian project for keeping silent in the face of unbridled irregularities perpetrated in the February 23 Presidential election won by incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. The party expressed disappointment over open sentiments displayed by the leaders after the declaration of Buhari by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without questioning infractions such as militarisation of election, disenfranchising of millions of voters and violent disruption of polls in some parts of the Southern Nigeria. Secondus said “they are celebrating criminality. But they need to know that one day the criminality they are supporting and celebrating today, will consume them one day”. He bemoaned what happened during the Presidential poll, saying “what happened has never happened in the history of the country”.

Secondus specifically quipped at the National Peace Committee led by Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar for failing to react to displeasure of several million of Nigerians over the polls. “The National Peace Committee is keeping quite. What we have in Nigeria now is dictatorship. But one day there will be divine intervention and the nation will be rescued. “Our leaders should stop being sentimental. Emotions and sentiments will not save this country. What they are doing will rather further nosedive the situation we find ourselves”, he said. He also warned both President Buhari and INEC to be weary of the side of history they stand today because of the future. “President Muhammadu Buhari, INEC chairman, you may think that all is well. But history is being recorded. In the nearest future, the truth will be made known. President Buhari, how will history judge you”, he said. The chairman wondered if election would hold in 2023, arguing that with the military on the side of the APC, the party may not even conduct election but declare winners. The PDP vowed to report to the United Nation and other global

Plea bargain: Late Badeh’s family concedes $1m, company, 5 properties to FG As Court orders wind up of Iyalikam Nigeria Limited

Andrew Orolua, Abuja Three months after he was killed by yet-to-be identified killers, the family of former Chief of Defence Staff, the late Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd), on Monday, conceded the forfeiture of his company, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited and five choice properties to the Federal Government in a plea bargain settlement. Through the late Baden’s lawyer, Samuel Ologunorisa (SAN), the family entered a plea bargain agreement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This formed part of a judgment delivered by Justice Okon Abang at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Monday following a further amended charge brought by the EFCC where Badeh’s company, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, was made the sole defendant after his demise. At the resumed trial, on Monday, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Oluwaleke Atolagbe, told the Court that the business of the day was for the second defendant to open defence since the first defendant (Badeh) was now deceased. Atolagbe said however, that in view of an agreement reached between the prosecution and the defence, a further amended charge of 10 counts had been filed as well as a plea bargain agreement. “My Lord, there is a development, the prosecution met with the defence and we have been able to reach an agreement. “We filed a further amended charge dated March 1, 2019 and filed

March 4 and we also filed a plea bargain agreement with regards to provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, (ACJA),” he said. Atolagbe asked that the new charge be read in open court and in view of the plea bargain agreement, a guilty plea be entered for the defendant, (Iyalikam Nigeria Limited) by the court. Following the reading of the ten count amended charge and the plea of guilty entered for the defendant by the court, the lawyer prayed the court to enter judgement based on the plea bargain agreement. “For the avoidance of doubt, we ask that the court should order, as part of the sentence, the final forfeiture of all the properties affected in counts one to ten in the further amended charge as reflected in the plea bargain agreement. “We further pray that the defendant be convicted and wound up based on the plea bargain agreement and Section 19 of the Money Laundering Act.” Delivering judgement, Justice Abang held that in view of the plea bargain agreement, the defendant was guilty as charged. “I have before me a plea bargain agreement duly executed by Iyalikam Nigeria Limited and the EFCC. “I hereby find the defendant guilty and accordingly convict the defendant of the 10-counts further amended charge. “Having regards to the plea bargain agreement duly executed by the parties, Iyalikam Nigeria

Limited is hereby wound up and the judgment shall be served on the Corporate Affairs Commission for necessary action,” the judge said. Justice Abang also ordered that the following assets be forfeited to the Federal Government; “A mansion situated at No.6 Ogun River Str., off Danube Str., Maitama Abuja. “A shopping mall situated at Plot 1386, Oda Crescent, Cadastral Zone, Wuse II Abuja. “A duplex located at No.19, Kumasi Crescent, Wuse II Abuja. “A duplex at No. 14 Adzope Crescent, off Kumasi Cresent, Wuse II, Abuja. “Semi-detached duplex at No. 8A Embu Street by Sigma Apartments Wuse II, Abuja. “The sum of $1 million recovered from No.6 Ogun River Street., off Danube Str., Maitama, Abuja.” The judge further ordered that in view of the fact that the first defendant (Badeh) was reported dead, all proceedings against him are terminated. Until his death on December 18, 2018, Badeh was standing trial on charges of alleged abuse of office, money laundering and converting public money to personal use to the tune N3.9bn. He was arraigned along with the company on a 14-count charge bordering on fraud, to which he entered a “not guilty” plea to all counts. The diverted money was said to have been meant for arms purchase in the face of worsening destructions by Boko Haram terrorists.

Oshiomhole democratic institutions alleged unprofessional role played by the Nigerian military in the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections. The party noted with concern the role of the military in intimidating and harassing members of the opposition during the polls, alleging that the militarisation of the election was a negation of the constitutional role of the military. Briefing the press after the Expanded Caucus Meeting of PDP held at the party’s National secretariat in Abuja on Monday, the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Olgbondiyan. said it is an aberration for the military to play partial role in politics. He said: “Caucus further noted the role of the military in the February 23 election and resolved that we will report the action of the military through a petition to the United Nations as well as other global democratic institutions on the role of our military in the February 23 election”. “Caucus further raised issues about the harassment, intimidation and cajoling of our members on the plot by the Buhari Presidency as well as APC to intimidate the people’s president, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the resolve of the PDP to go to court by insisting, blackmailing and saying that he should not go to court”. He added that the party and its candidate have resolved to seek legal redress on the stolen mandate. “Caucus commended Nigerians for refusing the harassment, intimidation and militarisation of the electoral process and participating in the election but noted that the mandate that was freely given to our candidate was stolen and as such the party and the candidate jointly resolved to go to the tribunal and reaching the end of what is permissible within our legal system to get back our mandate on behalf of Nigerians”. Speaking on other topical issues raised at the meeting, Ologbondiyan said: “Caucus also reviewed the situation in Kano State particularly as it concerned the court decision and noted that an appeal had been filed against the judgement and we will continue to study and follow the situation as they arise. “On the forthcoming governorship election, we decry the

militarisation of the South South and the rigging which the APC is plotting ahead of the election. We urge Nigerians to come out en mass and participate in the election and ensure they vote for the candidates of the PDP”. At the Expanded Caucus Meeting were National Executive Council members, National Working Committee members, Presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Senators Philip Aduda, Dino Melaye’s, Board of Trustees chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, Engr. Buba Galadima, former governor Babangida Aliyu, Senator Ibrahim Mantu and former National Assembly members. Meanwhile, a support group of the PDP, Better Nigeria Group (BNG) has threatened to sue the party’s presidential candidate Alahji Atiku Abubakar, if he refused to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s election. Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Monday, the spokesman for the group, Mr. Dickson Iroegbu, alleged that the irregularities in the presidential election should not be allowed to stand for the sake of the future generations. “This brazen impunity should not be allowed to stand unchallenged otherwise amongst other things, our democracy will be dead forever”, he said, adding that the sham of an election which took place and the subsequent declaration leaves so much to wonder about credibility. The BNG expressed support for Atiku’s resort to approach the court for redress in a bid to claim the mandate overwhelmingly given to him by Nigerians. Urging Atiku not to backtrack, the group said “it is important that the PDP candidate realises and consistently keeps in his memory that it is not about him but those who have given him the mandate. “While we understand that he may be under pressure not to approach the court, we want to remind him that anything short of that shall be tantamount to abandonment of the people’s mandate and shall be a huge disappointment”. Members of BNG who wore black said they were mourning the loss of lives occasioned by the brigandage and violence which characterized the election.

Court nullifies Kano PDP governorship primary, orders fresh election State Exco dumps party for APC

Yakubu Salisu, Kano A Federal High Court in Kano on Monday nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidacy for not conducting primaries. The court presided by Justice Ambrose Lewis ruled that the purported nomination of Abba Kabir as Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is invalidated. Counsel to the plaintiff, Kabiru Usman, said the PDP would have to provide another governorship candidate before the coming polls. In his remarks, PDP’s counsel, Bashir Yusuf said the verdict does not affect Abba Kabir as a candidate but the PDP as a party. According to him, the PDP will obey court order. A PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Ali Amin-little, had approached the court, challenging the process that led to emergence of Abba Kabir Yusuf as PDP

gubernatorial candidate in Kano. Meanwhile, the factional leadership of the PDP in Kano under Senator Mas’ud Eljibiril Doguwa has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Announcing the official defection on Monday in Kano before newsmen, Doguwa said that after consultations with relevant stakeholders himself and 11 other executive members decided to move to the ruling APC as a result of irreconcilable differences between them and the National leadership under Prince Uche Secondus. According to him, since the return of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso to the PDP, the national leadership has sidelined him and his officials by recognising Rabi’u Suleman Bichi as the state party Chairman thereby creating two factional executives in the state. He said that a chunk of the party’s structure in

injured while discharging their duties during the polls. Adamu said that the Special Election Investigation Team had been directed to investigate all the cases, liaising with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure prosecution. He said that the perpetrators of the violence would be fished out and brought to justice no matter their status. The police boss reassured Nigerians and the international community of the commitment of the force to work closely with INEC and other sister security agencies towards a peaceful

Secondus Kano was handed over to Kwankwaso, a move he recalled, was part of the main reason former Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and his numerous supporters dumped the party some time last year. He pointed out that their choice of joining APC is to join hands with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje whom he described as a man with the interest of the state at heart whose main aim is

to transform the state in all ramifications. He accused Kwankwaso of destroying the party in Kano as the party could not win any seat in the just concluded National Assembly elections which took place alongside the presidential election. Mas’ud assured that there would be more defections in the state before the forthcoming gubernatorial and state House of Assemblies elections.

election. He said the personnel of the force should remain civil, firm, professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties. Adamu warned all political actors against violence and urged them to play the game in line with the Electoral Act. “Doing otherwise shall attract the full and appropriate response from the police and other security agencies,” he said. On the possibility of arming personnel at polling units, he insisted that no policeman would be allowed to carry arms at poling units.

He explained that it was against the electoral act and international law for officers to use arms at polling units. Adamu said that the force would continue to pay officers their allowances ahead of their deployment for election duty. He said that the meeting was aimed at debriefing strategic commanders and evaluating the performances of officers during the last elections. The police boss said the meeting would also afford the force, the opportunity to perfect plans for the March 9 Governorship and State Assembly elections.

said: “Yes, he Abdullahi is being investigated over alleged case of money laundering and the sum involved is €150 million. “Let it be known that investigation into the matter is ongoing and we can confirm that Babalele is in our custody. But he will be released soon,” the source added. The Daily Times recalls that Atiku Abubakar, Peoples

Democratic Party candidate in the just-concluded Presidential election, a few days raised an alarm over the arrest of Abdullahi by EFCC operatives, who invaded his residence. In a statement in Abuja by his Media Aide, Mr Paul Ibe, the former Vice President alleged that in a “desperate move” to make him concede and congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari, EFCC invaded the Maitama residence of Abdullahi.

Police arrest 323 suspected electoral offenders during presidential/NASS polls The Nigeria Police Force said it has arrested 323 persons across the country for alleged electoral offences during the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections. The force had earlier arrested 128 persons for alleged electoral offences. The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, disclosed this at a meeting with officers in the ranks of Commissioners of Police and above on Monday in Abuja. He said that two officers of the force paid the supreme price, some others were assaulted and

Humanitarian crisis looms in Abonnema, as Kalabari youths raise the alarm

“The EFCC agents numbering about two dozen came in two regular vehicles, an 18-seater Toyota bus with registration number Abuja CS 522 RSH and a Hilux van. “They came with a warrant to search the house and office of Abdullahi and found nothing incriminating. “They then proceeded to his office at Oakland Centre in Maitama and found nothing incriminating there. “However, they took away

some documents of landed property. Not done, the EFCC officials stormed his Wuse residence where they again found nothing incriminating after searching. “Afterwards, Abdullahi was taken away to the EFCC office in Wuse to make a statement,” Abubakar said. The anti-graft agency did not however specify how the huge sum was laundered or where it originated and where it terminated.

Young men and women going under the aegis of Kalabari Youth Federation have alerted Nigerians and the entire world on the killings in Abonnema in Akuku Toru local government area of Rivers state, saying that the attack on soldiers by unknown gunmen in Abonnema has led to humanitarian crisis in the area. Speaking in Port Harcourt yesterday on the development, the President of the Kalabari Youth Federation, Mr. Livingstone Membere, who called on the international community to intervene in the crisis, said that the people of Kalabari were no longer sleeping with their eyes closed for fear of the activities of criminal gun men who had unleashed terror in Abonnema. Mr. Membere commended the Nigerian Army for being professional in handling the crisis, saying “I want to thank the Nigerian Army. They’ve been very professional in the recent unfortunate event that happened. They did not harass anybody. They’ve allowed people to move out of the community. They’re patrolling, trying to get closer to the actual set of persons that perpetrated this very heinous crime.” He continued: “But going beyond that, there is a humanitarian crisis. More than 5,000 persons have exited Abonnema. Some of them come into Port Harcourt and some are stranded in Degema. We are faced with a huge humanitarian crisis. When I say more than 5, 000 persons, the figures are way beyond that.” The Kalabari youth president, however, said that the youth group was making efforts to expose those behind the killing of a senior soldier and injuring others in Abonnema and ensure justice was done. According to him, “The Kalabari Youth Federation is investigating everything that is happening in the Kalabari Kingdom. And in due time, people will pay for it. This is not the time to massage the ego of people. “Our people are suffering. More than 5,000 persons from Abonnema are now displaced? Abonnema that used to be the hub of hospitality in Rivers state is now a battle ground and nobody will pay for it? They will pay for it. They will. All of them. They will pay for it,” he vowed. In another development, following the violence that engulfed Abonnema during and after the February 23, Presidential and National Assembly elections in the area, the Abonnema council of chiefs has offered to assist the military to track down

the hoodlums who killed the soldier during the period. Speaking on the situation in the town, the Amanyanabo of Abonnema, King Disrael Bob Manuel, called on the residents who fled from the area during the 23rd February election day violence to return home. The Amanyanbo condoled the GOC of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army over the death of the soldier and two others who were attacked last Saturday, vowing that the criminals who carried out the attack (who he believed were not indigenes of Abonnema) would be fished out. “The Abonnema Council of Chiefs and the good people of Abonemma strongly condemn the attack on military personnel in Abonnema by criminal elements and thugs who are non-indigenes of Abonnema. “We condole with the GOC 6 Division on the death of one of his officers who lost his life in the hands of armed political thugs that invaded Abonnema on the 23rd February and 2 other soldiers who were attacked by criminal bandits in the night of 2nd March 2019 at Abonnema. The Abonnema people are peaceloving and have had a long and peaceful relationship with the armed forces,” he said. Meanwhile hundreds of women in Abonnema yesterday staged a protest, asking the Nigerian army stationed at the town not to leave as being demanded by some people. Speaking to journalists during the protest, the leader of the women, Mrs. Abigail Don Pedro, and other women who spoke during the protest expressed fear that if the army left the community, their lives would be in danger as hoodlums would take over the community. The leader stated: “The women of Akuku Toru are protesting because we want the army to stay. The same people that are agitating that the army should go are the same people that are inviting the thugs to kill people in Akuku Toru. We, the Akuku Toru women, we need peace. We need the army to stay and protect our lives and property. Another woman protester said: “We want the army and police to stay. If the army leaves us, they will come into our houses and kill us.” The women protesters took their protest to the palace of the Amanyanabo of Abonnema, King Disrael Bob Manuel who assured them that efforts were underway to resolve the lingering crisis in Abonnema. The King said: “Today alone we have held a meeting concerning the crisis in Abonnema and what happened in Abonnema. So the committee will look at everything in totality and make a press release to everybody.”

EU proposes poverty alleviation, erosion Short News intervention projects in 6 states Union locks Nasarawa CJ, prevents Isaac Job, Uyo

Worried by ravaging effects of poverty and environmental degradation arising from erosion menace, the European Union (EU) has earmarked six pilot states in Nigeria for intervention. The benefitting states would include: Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Kwara, Imo, Delta and Lagos, where a team of assessment experts drawn from a combination of Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are working to confirm disaster vulnerable communities in the affected states. The President of the Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risks Reduction (NAPPDRR), Hon. Al Mustapher Edoho, one of the coordinating officials for the project, said 50 countries including Nigeria have been listed in the scheme. In an interview in Uyo yesterday, Edoho

listed some of the benefitting communities in Akwa Ibom to include Ntak Inyang and Abekpi in Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom; Mubi in Adamawa state; Oguta and Nekede in Imo state; Orhie Irri and Aradhe in Delta and Ilorin in Kwara. He said the programme is aimed at complementing the States’ Development Goals (SDGs) by alleviating rural poverty through provision of essential lifeline for the disasterprone communities. “It’s a global social development initiative and the project helps United Nations International Strategy on Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) to review the progress towards the implementation of the Sendai, Japan’s framework on disaster reduction globally, as well as climate change”, he explained. According to Edoho, his NAPPDRR was selected as one of the participating organisations “after a rigorous understudy of the impacts

of disaster risks like flooding, erosion and environmental pollution in two communities in Akwa Ibom”. He disclosed that the findings of the team of investigators and enumerators sent to the affected areas would be heavily deliberated upon at a comprehensive forum of all stakeholders before the commencement of implementation. “We will interface in the course of the investigation with multi-stakeholders like civil society organisations, youths and children, persons with disabilities, women, the professionals and elderly persons and Local Government’s officials. “At the end, we will hold a local action plan on Disaster Risks Reduction (DRR) to review the whole finds and build capacity as well as promote inclusive risks governance. Each of the risks area will be provided with a micro project to mitigate the impact of the disaster and build their resilience”, he stressed.

lawyers, others access to court

The National Executive Council of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has locked Justice Suleiman Dikko, Nasarawa State Chief Judge (CJ) at the High Court Headquarters Lafia. The CJ who disguised and entered his office around 8:00 am, was locked inside as the Union blocked the entrance of the court. National President of JUSUN, Marwan Mustapher-Adamu led other members of the National Executive Council (JUSUN) on a protest on Monday in Lafia. The President was also represented by Saidu Adamu, National Assistant Secretary of the Union, also prevented lawyers and other management staff access to the court. The President explained that the Union would continue to stage a peaceful protest at the court for three consecutive days and nobody would be allowed in or out of the court. Similarly, Jimoh Musa, Nasarawa State Chairman of JUSUN, said the strike was to press home demands for better welfare. He listed some of the demands to include: illegal deduction on their salaries, lack of payment of five years promotion arrears, lack of convention of staff with higher qualification among others. The Union embarked on an indefinite strike since Nov. 13 2018, to demand for better welfare of its members.

I am ready to die for youths - Bala Mohammed Samuel Luka, Bauchi Bauchi State gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir has said that Bauchi state youths are worth dying for and will do that in order to brighten their future. According to him, “the youths are ready to die for me and I am also ready to die for them. I am in the contest to bring the people of Bauchi State out of the woods. Our youths and women will be given utmost priority if I am elected the governor of Bauchi State”. Senator Bala Mohammed Kaura who was speaking on Sunday at a town hall meeting in Bauchi to present his manifesto said it was worrisome, the current trend where the youths are been used by some selfish politicians to guard campaign posters and billboards. He said, since inception, the present administration has refused to employ a single graduate into the state civil service despite the fact that year-in year- out hundreds of youths have graduated from different institutions across the world. The guber hopeful who lamented that the youths in Bauchi state have been relegated and have become political thugs said he would do everything possible to bring them to limelight if eventually elected governor in March, 9 gubernatorial and state assembly elections.

Tinubu denies banning Gov Ajimobi from governorship rallies Says governor is partner in progress, not rival

Patrick Okohue The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has denied having any rift with the Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi, saying that he and the governor are partners and not rivals and that his intervention in the Oyo State APC is to engender genuine reconciliation not to hide or supplant the governor. The former Lagos State governor was reacting to a report by an online news media, that he, Tinubu, was moving to ban Governor Ajimobil from leading the APC campaigns in Oyo following his intervention in the state and holding discussions with some notable leaders and bringing back to the party’s fold former Governor Adebayo AlaoAkala. Tinubu, who described Governor Ajimobi as an excellent governor and a faithful member of the APC, said that Ajimobi “has brought progress to the state and in serving two consecutive terms, Ajimobi made history in Oyo. He is instrumental to anything the APC can achieve in Oyo.” The APC leader in a statement on Monday by his Media Adviser, Tunde Rahman, noted that he was only lending his support to the governor’s and APC’s efforts in the state. “They are partners not rivals,” Rahman said.

He described the report by the online medium as another excursion into falsehood. But added: “This report goes beyond a lie. It is a vindictive attempt to sow discord because the writer is angered by the APC’s success in the presidential election. Thus, the writer has cast truth aside in his angry desire to inflict some kind of electoral wound on the APC.” The statement reads: “SaharaReporters seems unable to mend its ways. Instead of trying to publish what is fair and accurate, it rather grows its tales from seedlings of untruth and calumny. This online newspaper no longer bothers to offer the pretense of seeking the truth. For SaharaReporters, whatever is sensational must be true and whatever is true must be sensational. The real truth is that SaharaReporters no longer cares if its reportage is right. SaharaReporters just cares that it is widely read. It dare not allow veracity to hamper its business model. This is a disservice to ethical journalism which honors truthful, accurate reporting. “The report titled “Tinubu Bans Ajimobi from Appearing at APC Governorship Rallies” is another of SaharaReporters’ excursions into falsehood. The report claims that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu somehow has banned Governor Abiola Ajimobi from attending APC campaigns for Saturday’s governorship election in Oyo State. “This report goes beyond a lie. It is a vindictive

attempt to sow discord because the writer is angered by the APC’s success in the presidential election. Thus, the writer has cast truth aside in his angry desire to inflict some kind of electoral wound on the APC. However, the writer should refrain from this path of falsehood. It would be better for the writer to come to grips with reality and to accept the fact of the APC presidential victory and the likelihood of APC victories in most governorship elections, including that of Oyo. “The mischief that SaharaReporters cites is not between Tinubu and Ajimobi. It is solely in the mind of SaharaReporters. By its unsubstantiated report, the medium seeks to set brother against brother. Asiwaju and Governor Ajimobi have been political brothers and allies for a long time. Their friendship existed long before SaharaReporters came to the scene and will endure long after this self-diminishing online site is no more. “Moreover, Governor Ajimobi has been an excellent governor and a faithful member of the APC. He has brought progress to the state and in serving two consecutive terms, Ajimobi made history in Oyo. He is instrumental to anything the APC can achieve in Oyo. The truth is that Asiwaju is not trying to supplant or hide the governor. Instead, Asiwaju is lending his support to the governor’s and APC’s efforts in the state. They are partners not rivals.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa state, has denied involvement in the electoral violence that reportedly claimed one life in Oweikorogha community, Southern Ijaw Local Government area of the state. It was learnt that gunmen in military uniform reportedly killed a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the area during the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 23. The party in a statement on Monday by the state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, in Yenagoa dismissed insinuations by Governor Seriake Dickson, and the PDP in Bayelsa State that Seidougha Taribi was a victim of violence perpetrated by APC supporters. The party also noted its account of the Oweikorogha incident, “On the day of election, materials were brought to Oweikorogha. PDP supporters led by Moses Taribi, Seidougha Taribi, Promise Elijah, Reginald Dei and others were fomenting trouble with the intent to destroy the electioneering materials or hijacking them for their party. APC supporters did all they could to allow voting to take place. “While voting was on going, a certain Perebigha Azikwe of the PDP arrived the polling unit with a locally made pistol, and snatched the card reader. At that instance, the APC Ward 2 Agent, Deizigha ThankGod, approached the PDP loyalists to plead with them to return the card reader, but they refused.

Atiku should be allowed to go to court if he feels cheated

Ademola Adeoye

To start with, I like to say that I do not know the raison d’être behind the stance of the Ex-NBA President, Olisa Agbakoba, advising Alhaji Atiku not to go to court to challenge the outcome of the Presidential election that did hold on the 23rd of February, 2019. He said Atiku should accept the result, moving into the position of a statesman, leaving a legacy by assisting the civil society, the small parties and the PDP in reconstructing Nigeria on the question of a strong legal system. I opine that everyone—who truly believes in democracy needs to egg on and hearten Atiku to go to court. This is the breed of country we are trying to build—a country where citizens are free to go to court if they feel cheated. On the condition that Atiku can prove before the whole world that he truly won the last Presidential election, then let it be on record that PMB is the first president to be sent home by the tribunal— after winning a presidential election. This is how rock-solid democracy is being built in sane climes! Backtracking a little, thrice Buhari lost and thrice he went to courts of competent jurisdiction to challenge the outcomes of those presidential polls, because he felt he was cheated by the political party in power in those days. I cannot remember anyone

counseling him against going to the tribunal to challenge results of those presidential elections. At the end of the day, he lost those cases, but he was allowed to go to court. If it was good for him then, why is it now wrong for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar now? It is hypocrisy to say that Atiku is going to waste his time going to the tribunal. Furthermore, we have witnessed Governors—who were defeated at the polls. On the 26th of November, 2010, at around 2: 49pm, the court of Appeal in Ibadan, Oyo State sacked Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, declaring Rauf Aregbesola of the Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) as the Executive Governor of the State of Osun. It was a celebrated day for Rauf Aregbesola, Bola Tinubu and every member of the ACN. If it was good for Rauf Aregbesola and the ACN then, why is it wrong for Atiku and the PDP now? How about Dr. Kayode Fayemi? After a long tortuous legal battle spanning fortyone (41) months and seven days, Fayemi ultimately emerged as the Executive Governor of Ekiti State. He took over from Engineer Segun Oni—according to a unanimous decision of the Appeal Court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital. Led by Justice Ayo Salami, the five-man panel declared Fayemi, the Action Congress of

Nigeria, ACN candidate in the April 2007 governorship election, as the duly elected Governor of Ekiti State, having won the majority of lawful votes. If it was good for Fayemi, why is it wrong for Atiku, if he feels cheated? What of Peter Obi? He replaced Former Governor Chris Ngige, whose 2003 election victory was overturned by the Nigerian Federal Court of Appeal on March 15, 2006. But on the 2nd of November, 2006, Governor Obi was impeached by 16 members of the State House of Assembly after seven (7) months in office. He was replaced the next day by Dame Virginia Etiaba, his deputy, making her the first ever female Governor in Nigeria’s history. Peter Obi was reinstated as the Governor of Anambra State again on February 9, 2007 by the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu. Peter Obi felt cheated and went to Court and he won. This is the beauty of democracy. If he hadn’t gone to court, he would have been cheated forever. Also, if Atiku feels cheated, he should be allowed to go to court without maligning his image in the public. What was good for Peter Obi in those days because he felt cheated should also be good for Atiku today because he feels cheated. This is the kind of robust democracy we are trying to build.

Going to the tribunal does not stop Alhaji Atiku from playing the role of a statesman as Olisa Agbakoba did say. Infact, it is better to go to court than to cause political crisis in the nation. Atiku is actually behaving as an elder statesman and he needs to be commended, not condemned. The most civil thing to do when cheated is to go to court, not to foment trouble in the nation and that is what Atiku is planning to do. Instead of lampooning Atiku for planning to go to court, every well-meaning Nigeria is supposed to laud the proposed legal step of his. When the news of Atiku rejecting the outcome of the last presidential election, heading for court, Abdulsalam’s National Peace Committee also advised him against going to court and the propaganda of Atiku giving the National Peace Committee some ridiculous conditions began to fly everywhere on social media. We can never develop a great nation this way. We cannot afford to be changing a goal post in the middle of the game. If we are going to build a nation where the law rules, then let us have it. And if we are going to have a lawless nation, then let us have one! We cannot applaud some folks for going to court when they feel cheated and deride others for going to court when they feel cheated.

Umahi: South East pacesetter and reformer

Anthony Nwosu

Most people know that the act of governance is not a rocket science but it beholds on those trusted with the leadership roles to bequeath legacies that would endure the sands of history. In less developed climes like Nigeria, leadership thrives majorly by propaganda and the resourcefulness of those in power to silence the opposition. It is even becoming more gloomy that the bastion of hope for the generality of the masses; the fifth columnists, those who are supposed to expose them that are pillorying the resources of our commonwealth have somehow compromised by being tools in the hands of these juntas called leaders in this nation by feeding the populace through their mass media stories that are only gullible for enrichment of their pockets to the detriment of this depraved nation. One wonders on earth how could a sitting Governor accused of bribe, would be winning award or the case of candidates accused of fraud winning elections in Nigeria while in jail. It touches the sensibilities of the citizens either they were misinformed, cajoled or coerced. But it points to one direction – a docile nation whose citizenry have been emasculated and incapacitated. However, there seems to be hope in the Horizon as a pacesetter, reformer berth within us. Who would have believed that in Nigeria where the minds of the leaders are skewed awkward to enslave the people, God raised an enigma whose major focus is to liberate the people from the shackles of oppressive forces that bedeviled the region in a long while? Harry A. Overstreet said, “The very essence of all power to influence lies in getting the other person to participate. I love the leadership proverb that says, “He who thinks he leads but has no followers is only taking a walk.” True leaders will always manifest the characteristics of knowledge, relationship, intuition, character, experience, ability and past success. There is an unsung hero who God endowed with the qualities enumerated above that has taken the governance to an enviable height. His grass to grace story was much of God’s direction, hard work, probity, and burning desire to succeed and impact on other people. As a Civil Engineer by profession, he stood by the watchword of integrity and honesty which guided him in his private business to a glorious success. Though he was very successful in his private business, the love to care for his people drove him into politics and he went through the ranks to become the State Chairman of the party. His leadership abilities also came to the fore as he was able to galvanize the fortunes of the party into a potent force. During his reign as the party Supreme in the state, every nook and cranny felt the equity participation of the democratic dividends. From the position of party Chairman, he was made the Deputy Governor under the regime of Chief Martin Elechi. I believe that by now most people would realise that the pacesetter and Reformer that is on the block is none other than the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Apostle Dave Nweze Umahi. The road to victory was filled with thorns but like his name depicts, he surmounted the entire obstacle

to win the exalted seat in Ebonyi. He forgave all his detractors to concentrate in the task of moving the state forward. His vision and plans are structured to focus on emancipating the beleaguered citizens of the state to a place of economic upliftment and prominence among the comity of states and in Nigeria. He set the pace for true reconciliation by running all inclusive government bringing in people outside his political party, people that are tested and trusted who shared his vision of making Ebonyi great. From the writer’s perspective, I could infer that the cardinal points of his administration are capacity development, resource development and building infrastructure. All these are allied towards job creations and enhancing the living standard of the Ebonyi indigenes. Today, various empowerment programmes are in place in Ebonyi, the street to skill programme is a vivid case in point, the widows’ programme championed by the wife of the Excellency, Mrs. Rachel Umahi, the empowerment skill acquisition for the teeming youth population to position them as key ingredient to the growth of Ebonyi economy. Need it be said that the cabinet is largely a youth cabinet that is so vibrant in taking decisive actions, delivery of quality service and uplifting the living standard of the Ebonyi indigenes. Though the resources of the state is largely low as the state with the lowest Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) and even with the least Federal allocation, the state has made giant strides in different sectors. There are several cases where the governor has taken radical decisions which previous administration refused to take in order not to ruffle political feathers. A case in point was when the Governor ordered the State Commissioner of Police to arrest one of his aides during the State Executive Meeting for being one of the master minds of a deadly communal clash in the state. Ebonyi has enjoyed relative peace since the advent of this regime in the State. He has nipped in the bud the intractable crises that has bedeviled the different communities, within the state and with the sister state, Cross River. The Governor takes no nonsense when the rights and privileges of the common people are trampled upon. Governor Umahi would always admonish his people to tow the path of peace, and is determined to end the reign of impunity as far as ethnic crisis are concerned by treating the promoters of such conflicts as criminals. Ebonyi is an Agrarian state with over 75% population into farming. Rice farming is the most popular and government is putting in machinery not only to plant but to process. As a result of the government incentive to investors, many are already involved in commercial rice farming when aggregated with the subsistence farming by the larger populace, Abakaliki rice can feed the whole of Nigeria if given the necessary support from the Federal Government. Today, people who have migrated to other cities like Lagos, Onitsha, Kaduna, Kano and even Nnewi are coming back in droves for farming. The youths are also not left out in this enterprise as many who were dislodged

as motorcycle riders (okada) as a result of Anambra State ban on its use have resorted to farming thereby increasing the output in the agricultural sector. Favourable climate, arable land and cheap labour cost are the driving forces behind the Governor call for investors to take up the opportunity in the investment window. To drive the investment portfolio, the state is so accommodating as people from various walks of life throng into the state on daily basis. It may interest you to know that the writer of this article boarded a 16 seater vehicle passing through Awka, Enugu and Abakaliki. Of the lot, two persons each dropped at Awka and Enugu while the rest went to Abakaliki. Does it not show where the pendulum is swinging to? Abakaliki city has witnessed tremendous development in every aspect through much of the commercial sector is still in the hands of non indigenes especially from the sister state, Anambra. It must have been one of the reasons why the Governor even appointed non indigenes to key areas to fast-track development and empower the lives of the Ebonyi indigenes. It is equally noteworthy to say that much of the street names in Abakaliki are towns from Anambra State showing early settlers in those areas. That the Governor has not thought it wise to alter this is a credit to his hospitality after all the only street in Awka was ignorantly changed to Club Street by the Governor. Abakaliki Street in Awka was ignorantly changed to Club Street by the Governor. Though Governor Umahi sent emissaries to Governor Obiano on the need for reversal but the outcome is not known to the writer till date. The Governor recently pronounced payment of N10,000 to NYSC Corps members every month to augment the stipend of as a mark of growing hospitality of the State. Abakaliki as at now is a city that is about to burgeon. At night, major streets are lit coupled with ancillary lights at the median of dual carriage ways with water fountains dotting the major roundabouts in the city. The buildings around the Government House have their fence walls painted with decorative artworks. Major government establishments also received this touch of artworks on their fence wall. Giant Electronic screens lit the major junctions showcasing landmarks works of the State Governor and broadcast premiership matches at night. Due to the undulating nature of the Abakaliki terrain, most drainage in the city are devoid of stagnant water that had forestalled the breeding of mosquitoes. In the area of infrastructural development, Governor Umahi has proven to be a man that has a Midas touch. It is no longer news that he is interconnecting the different communities with concrete road (8 inches thickness) that will still receive additional 2 inches coal tar. The good thing about this construction is that work is been done with the best engineering practices ever. These roads are built with attendant concrete drainages and shoulders. The concrete mix ratio with the structural strength can withstand any weathering effects for

generations to come. These communities hitherto were no go areas as a result of bad state, of the roads and broken bridges making supply of agricultural materials to the city difficult especially during the rainy seasons. Aside from the road works, the Governor has embarked on construction of different projects taking place simultaneously in Abakaliki, Afikpo and environs. Ebonyi Mall, Ecumenical Centre, new Government House, lodge, Presidential lodge, School of Nursing, Ebonyi State University to mention a few. Like I said in my last article, the structural strength and the concrete mix employed remains incomparable in the annals of history in building works in Nigeria. To complement quality service delivery, the Governor supervises the projects daily after routine governance works. Because he is a firm stickler for excellence during supervisions, works considered inappropriate will always be demolished. A church Pastor during the Sunday service of first Sunday in December here in Abakaliki remarked that the Governor is doing what most of his predecessors did not do and said he deserved accolades. He was preaching on the topic: Thanksgiving. It is also on record that the Governor said Airport will be built next year in Abakaliki; quoting him, “The airport may not be the biggest but it will sure be the most beautiful.” The two overhead bridges and the one under construction will complement the aesthetic look of the new Abakaliki city which will invariably turn Abakaliki to a city to behold in terms of beauty. It might even attain the status of Paris with the acronym, ‘See Abakaliki and Die.’ Truth be told that even with the lean financial resources of the state and the massive infrastructural construction works going on in most of the areas of Ebonyi at the same time, the Government of Ebonyi State still pays salaries of civil servants by the middle of every month. The prudent handling of the affairs of the State made it possible to continue the scholarship to every Ebonyi indigene from primary to university. “What a feat by this unsung Hero.” In the time past, Abakaliki used to be the scorn of the whole of South East but today Ebonyi people can beat their hearts with joy that the Lord had turned their captivity around and they were like them that dream. Some people might ask how, why so? The simple answer is the policies and programmes of the Ebonyi government have impacted on the downtrodden and the people are happy and enjoying it. I will end this piece with the words of Rev. Father Mbaka on his adoration service on Sunday 2nd December, 2018 at Enugu where he said that David was in the house and that he will defeat every Goliath on the way and that the crown of Ebonyi State will rest with him for eight years. Let us celebrate the Pacesetter and Reformer who is making giant strides and a national asset to Nigeria. Welcome Chief David Nweze Umahi, Ebonyi State Governor.

Inlove with unavailable, romancing a ghost

F

alling INLOVE with unavailable means falling in love with someone you will never spend the rest or your life with. You will not cuddle in bed till both of you are grey. You will not bear the marriage title, and you will not have the honor or pain of being attached to this person forever. I say pain, because it is NOT a privilege to find yourself in this predicament. Unavailable love is dating a married man, sleeping with a married woman, loving a younger man, romancing a different status quo, nationality, religion….. someone who is very far and wide, health challenges like Aids, Cancer, Genotypes, etc. These are serious factors. Basically, Falling INLOVE with unavailable means being with someone who is worlds apart from you in all ramification. It means being emotionally entangled with someone who does not belong to you or who simply cannot be with you. Love is not enough. You must consider Bigamy, Adultery, and sheer stupidity. I apologize for where you are, but please if you find yourself in this loop, achingly take a bow. THIS AFFAIR WILL NOT END WELL. It is very

much like a death. One may wonder why they keep bumping into empty vessels, deep wells and mirages. It is not your fault. Matters of the heart could be very tricky. Nevertheless, after you have relished in the act of falling In love or in lust, you must pick yourself up and tell yourself the truth. You cannot cure alcoholism by drinking another bottle of beer. You cannot free yourself from diabetes by eating a bunch of sugar. So running to the very man or woman who you cannot be with, will only open you up to more addiction, and with addiction comes foolishness and illicit behavior. Not only will you be belittled or lose your dignity, especially for women, you will get yourself into a spiral of victimhood, which could block your chances of ever falling in love with the one who is AVAILABLE. You will heal eventually. You are who you are, and nothing is wrong with you. Love is a puzzle. You have to be the right fit. You are the right fit, but for someone else. Give yourself what this person gives you and cultivate your marriage or relationships to be greener. You were not created to chase the wind. Craving for unavailable is like romancing a ghost.

A broken limb

I

was thanking my friend (Facebook Celebrity: Jane Akwani) the other day for being such an inspiration to me. Her updates and articles have kept me encouraged to keep writing. I visited Nigeria with the intention of launching my book ‘A SELFISH TURN’. I had done the first launching in New York and I was really looking forward to spreading the word in my country. However the cost margin for printing was absolutely insane, so I had to stick to Amazon till I become a millionaire. Anyway, because I am not one to be defeated, I wrote another book, but fewer in pages, so I could print in Nigeria and launch it before I leave. The title is ‘DONT GO THROUGH HELL FOR FREE’. So as I was talking to Jane, I mentioned that I had to reschedule my trip and leave back to my abode, 2 months earlier due to my ailing health, and it was on my sick bed that I wrote this book. It marveled me that I was able to muster such beauty in my ugliness. I was so sick, yet so fixated on finishing the book. That is quite commendable. But you see, a few of us are catalysts, where we live through the hell that we speak of and we seldom get a breath of fresh air. We experience major lows and sparing highs, yet people glean from our seemingly high persona.

The issue with such people is we don’t know when to rest or should I say, quit. We are so used to giving of ourselves or fighting wars that we always expect to win. It took me getting very ill, to realize that it was okay for me to cancel ministrations and recover. Some people may presume it to be the devil interrupting God’s assignment through me. However, I have lived in my body long enough and I have observed my patterns well enough to know when something is God, the devil, or a warning. This was a warning. I was getting weaker by the day and I had to admit to myself that I have lost this battle, which is okay. I didn’t get to travel to Enugu, Gombe, and Zaria, to preach my heart out and sing my uplifting songs. Because I am such a fighter, it is hard for me to see when I’ve been defeated. There is no shame in defeat. This is a word for we overachievers and workaholics. The shame is when we choose to keep fighting wars that we are no longer equipped to fight, due to lack of sleep, and dwindling creativity. It is pivotal that you listen to your body and spirit, and know when your assignment in a certain season, is up. I am of no use to anything or to anyone with a broken limb. Shame no longer lives here.

Out-of-school children and future leaders

N

igeria with the current figure of 13.2million out-of-school children occupies first position on the table of countries with the highest number of out-of-school children in the world certainly calls for sober reflection. More worrisome is the fact that the figure instead of decreasing in the last few years is rather increasing. This statistics which represent approximately 20 per cent of the world’s population of such children is an alarming and ticking time bomb that will spell doom for the country if urgent steps are not taken by relevant authorities to address the situation. We observe that governance in Nigeria has become a circle of family business where politicians secure the future of their children to the detriment of poor Nigerians. Also, inadequacy of funding, lack of teaching tools and modern classrooms, poor numerations and the acute shortage of qualified teachers are some of the factors leading to the fall in the standard of education in Nigeria. Recently, the Multiple Indication Cluster Survey report for 2016 (MICS 2016) revealed that out of the 11.5 million of out-of-school children in Nigeria, Northern states have the highest rate with an average of 69%. The latest data MICS 2016 showed that out of the 11.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, 7.5.million (69%) are from the Northern part of the country while the North East has the largest number of out-of-school children followed by the North West. With this number, Nigeria accounts for more than 1 in 5 number of out-of-school children globally and 45% of this number are from West Africa. Within the huge number of the out-ofschool children, girls are the majority especially in Northern Nigeria. Education indicators for Northern Nigeria are however different from the Southern part of the country. Nigeria’s future prosperity depends on producing children who are well prepared to take their right place in the society but unfortunately, a large number of Nigerian children are at risk of deprivations of the basic social amenities. Most of these children are situated in the rural areas and hard to reach communities. Majority of them are living in conflict and communities under emergencies, and it has been difficult taking basic amenities to them. All children have the right to better life, an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potentials without discrimination, bias or favouritism which cannot be over emphasised. We also observe that the rising number of children engaged in street trading in our major cities is becoming a worsening menace. The problem is further exacerbated by rising poverty and general insecurity in the country. In the North, the ravaging insurgency has added to the problem. If drastic measures are not taken to correct the situation, things would only get worse. Let us learn from France, Britain, Canada and other advanced countries which built the foundation of their countries and rapid technological advancement on good and quality education. It must be pointed out also that in these countries, teachers are amongst

the best paid workers. Unfortunately, the reverse is the case in Nigeria. Having failed to fund public education, the children of the poor are roaming the streets, hawking goods while the rich are educating their children in private schools at home and abroad. But to the detriment of the society, the abandoned children of the poor are being recruited to criminality by terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal gangs. The irony of the crisis is that a government, which claims that it lacks money to fund education is spending several billions of naira to fight insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery and banditry. We believe that an uneducated population will be locked in a cycle of poverty for their entire lives. Additionally, these children could constitute the next generation of suicide bombers and militants. We are of the opinion that it is high time the government and relevant stakeholders address the problem frontally. It is sad that government’s free education for all pupils up to the first nine years of schooling has not been fully implemented. There is the need to increase the percentage of the annual national budget that goes to education. Schools should be adequately funded and the enabling environment provided for teachers and support staff to deliver functional and effective education to the children. We submit that the improvement of the classroom environment is key to lowering the growing figures of out-of-school children in the country. We also wish to state that teachers must not only be well trained, their welfare must be prioritised while the Federal Government should muster the political will to adequately fund education.

Women engineers make case for female in Buhari’s next level cabinet Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo, Lagos The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to include more women in his next cabinet as he shops for new team to take the country to the next level. The president of APWEN, Engr Mrs Felicia Nnenna Agubata made this call as the countdown to the International Women’s day draws closer. “We are asking for inclusion based on their competence and demonstrated capacities. Without sounding immodest, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Sen. Aisha Dahiru , Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Hon. Asabe Vilita Bashir fit the narrative. We are using this opportunity to seek support for them because of their competence, training and skill mix. What is good for the geese is also sauce for the gander” While congratulating President Buhari for his re-election, the APWEN president also congratulated all women elected into the national assembly at the just concluded elections saying they have made the women folk proud. “In our own context, we are using this medium to congratulate the President and Commander in chief, President Mohammad

Buhari; GCFR on the successful conduct of the just concluded presidential and National Assembly Elections and at same time pray for women inclusion as he assembles the new team to drive the country forward. We wish to recognize and congratulate all female engineers and illustrious women in sundry professions who participated and won the just concluded national assembly elections. They have distinguished themselves and have also impacted our advancement as a society. They have by virtue of these feats become worthy examples and models for the girl-child” According to Agubata, APWEN, a non governmental organisation with the mission to stimulate women engineers to achieve excellence in the profession and in leadership; and to encourage the GirlChild to take up the study of sciences (STEM) tailored towards the Engineering profession, has series of programs to achieve its goal which includes the Build It Invent it programme tailored towards the girl child in upper primary school (Primary 5 &6). Agubata explained that APWEN will join other women globally to celebrate the international women’s day this week adding that this year’s theme of BalanceForBetter was very apt as it coincided with the Nigerian election year. “The time is right to do everything possible to forge a more gender balanced world. Women have come a long way but we

are not yet where we should be. We need to sustain the push for diversity and inclusion: not because we are women but because we have the required skill mix and competence” “Ample progress has been made globally in some sectors but that is not good enough. TUC seeks more appointments for women in Buhari’s govt Stories: Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja In a bid to canvass for more positions for the women, the Chairperson, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Women Commission, Mrs Oyinkansola Olasanoye, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to bring into his government more women who would deliver the people’s economic needs.

Olasanoye made the appeal yesterday while reacting to Buhari’s promise of women and youths’ inclusiveness in his administration. Recall, the President had at a dinner to celebrate his re-election in Abuja, promised to appoint more women and youths into his administration for the next four years. “We want the President to appoint round pegs in round holes to ensure development and growth

of the economy,’’ Olasanoye said. While commending the President for considering women and youths worthy of inclusion in the governance process, she urged him to ensure that he met the UN’s expectation of 30 per cent this time. According to Olasanoye, the appointments should be devoid of political sentiments or affiliation, rather only women and youths capable of delivering democratic dividends should be considered. “We want women that can do

Niger Gov woos civil servants ...Releases N800m for payment of pensions, gratuities The Niger Government yesterday approved the released a total of N800 million for the payment of pensions and gratuities in the state. Gov. Abubakar Bello who disclosed this during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Minna on Monday, said that N500 million was released to the state Pensions Board in February and additional N300 million had just been released to settle the outstanding pensions and gratuities of retirees in the state. Bello added that government had also started paying death benefits to ease sufferings of families of the deceased persons. Also the Governor solicited the support of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the March 9 governorship and state house of assembly elections. He called on the members of the unions to vote for him based on his record of meeting

LASPOTECH dares striking workers, begins examinations The management of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, yesterday commenced its 2018/2019 academic session’s second semester examination amid withdrawal of essential services by the striking nonacademic staff unions of the institution. Despite threats by the striking workers of LASPOTECH, to disrupt the examination, the students were yesterday seen peacefully writing their examinations, in spite of the harsh condition although there was heavy presence of security officials within the school premises. Recall, the striking non-academic Staff of the institution last Thursday vowed to resist the conduct of students’ examination which was billed to commence yesterday. The Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP), LASPOTECH Chapter, had told journalists that the union was aware of plans by the institution’s management to conduct examinations and incite the leadership of the students’ union against the striking workers. “We learnt that the management is contemplating of forcefully conducting examination for the students next week Monday, despite the ongoing strike by

the non- academic staff. “We are also aware that the management had also invited the executive members of the Students Union to canvass them to clash with the staff unions if we resist. “We have however sent a warning to the students’ leadership to stay away and not be a party to the ongoing crisis because they are our children and we can never clash with them, as examination will be after our struggle,” he said. But in a swift reversal, Mr Abiodun Awoyemi, told journalist yesterday that it was unfortunate that the management went ahead to conduct examinations for the students under a harsh condition maintaining that while the unions would not disrupt the conduct of the examination, they would only ensure that services under its purview were not provided. “We have ensured that our members are not at work to provide essential services and also ensure that any services under our purview provided by some hired workers were disconnected. “We have been moving round the campus to ensure full compliance and services, just like the generator that we

met switched on have been put off,” he said. According to him, the clinic, library and other major offices were under lock and facilities such as electricity and water have been disconnected. On his part, the Polytechnics’ spokesman, Mr Olanrewaju Kuye, said the institution’s management could not afford to postpone the examination because it would have affected or distort the academic calendar. “Since the lecturers are not on strike and have taught the students for more than 13 weeks now, and are also ready to conduct the examination, what is wrong with that?” Kuye said the institution had also made an alternative provision for essential services such as electricity, clinical and ambulance that could be needed in case of emergency. He however disclosed that the lingering issues between the Polytechnics’ management and the striking non-academic workers would be resolved by the state government after the governorship election. “All things being equal, the issues will be resolved after the election by the grace of God,” he said. Daily Times recalls that members of

they were involved in the nation’s governing process. In the last four years of Buhari’s administration, only 13 per cent of women were appointed into political positions, as against the United Nation (UN)’s 30 per cent stipulation.

NASUP and SSANIP, LASPOTECH chapter, had since January 21, embarked on a continuous protest and indefinite strike to demand for the reversal of an alleged de-migration of their salary structure by the institution’s management. The unions said the Rector, Mr Samuel Sogunro, had de-migrated the workers’ salary structure from the CONTISS 15 against the Deputy Governor’s pronouncement and court’s directive. The Polytechnic management, however said it did not de-migrate its staff as claimed but was only correcting a realignment of the salary structure as directed by the state government. It said the need for the alignment arose because the management of the Polytechnic was forced by the unions to implement the migration in 2016, while the document presented for implementation as later discovered, did not emanate from NBTE. Following the continuous protest, the management disengaged four members of the union, including the NASUP Chairman, Mr Akinlawon Fasasi, on issues bothering on the breech of peace within the campus.

the workers’ demands that past governments had failed to meet. “I am here today to appeal for more votes than the ones you gave me in 2015. This is because we have been able to address some of the demands that past administrations could not meet in the past years in spite of our limited resources. “We are still trying to correct a lot of mistakes from the past and going forward we should be able to have a better system for workers such as building their capacity and continuous training of civil servants. “I am proud to say today that what we have done for pensioners, no administration in the past had done that; the records are there in the pension board office. “This is because we know how very important pension is to those who have retired. When you think of people that rely on pensions for survival, you won’t dare play with their lives. “We will continue to pay the pensions. Although the money keeps increasing, we will continue to pay until the Contributory Pension Scheme kicks off,” he said. Earlier, the state Chairman of NLC, Malam Idris Ndako, had called on the governor, to ensure that workers whose promotions had yet to be implemented were effected. Ndako commended him for ensuring the welfare of the workers, and urged him to implement the N30,000 new minimum wage once it was implemented by the Federal Government. Also, the state Secretary of National Union of Pensioners, Alhaji Baba Sani, commended the governor for the payment of pensions and for the release of additional money to settle them. Also, the State Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Malam Yunusa Tenimun, has said that the union would mobilise its members to re-elect the governor during the March 9 elections. “In 2015, the governor came to us to seek for our support of which we gave him. Today he is here again to solicit for our support and we will support him because he has impacted positivity on the lives of the people,” he said.

Senior lawyers who are putting finishing touches to the petition, hinted yesterday that the team is being cautioned not to fall into legal traps that may create bottle neck and unnecessary objections as to the jurisdiction of the tribunal if the petition was not filed within 14 days. President Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner on Wednesday February 27, of the general election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but the alleged infractions the petitioners are seeking to challenge were committed on Saturday February 23, 2019. A legal expert, said on Monday that effort to challenge the conduct and result of the election will go to no issue if by next week’s Tuesday no petition is received from the candidate or his political party the Peoples Democratic Party. According to the legal luminary The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (the Fourth Alteration No.21) ACT, 2017 is specific of what is required following the alteration of section 185 of the Constitution thus.

LCCI tasks FG on necessary reforms in NCS Joy Obakeye The Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Muda Yusuf, has called on the Federal Government to demonstrate a stronger political will to bring about necessary reforms in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Yusuf said customs clearing procedures are still fraught with irregularities and arbitrary charges, which he said is not inconsistent with the ease of doing business agenda of the government. He urged the government to prioritise the

establishment of the national single window platform to address issues of delay and other challenges affecting cargo clearance at the port, noting that members of the business community still encounter many problems in the cargo clearing process. According to him, it is the political will of the government that will make customs “do the right thing” and ensure the establishment of a single window platform to facilitate trade. He said, “We need to get key institutions in the sector particularly customs to be friendly. The problem with customs is not just an issue of corruption but they are not onboard the ease of doing business. So they need to be brought on board. The

government needs to compel them to be onboard the ease of doing business agenda and it is the political will that is necessary to make them comply to ensure the single window platform is realized. “No agency should be since to be above the general policy direction of government. They need to do something quickly about the single window so that the challenges of the speed of documentation and the frustrations experienced by importers will be dealt with.” Yusuf also noted that the issues around valuation and classification of goods by customs have become major concerns for businesses in the country. “Customs in the last few years has been one of

the biggest headaches for the business community. We need to make the customs concentrate more on facilitation of trade because, over the last four years, the emphasis has always been on revenue. There is a great deal of arbitrariness as the customs strives to meet the revenue target. “We need to see more emphasis on trade facilitation and to make that happen, it is important that we deal with issues of arbitrariness, issues of valuation and classification and multiple check points outside the port and issue of general customs administration. We want to see something that is more efficient and investment friendly in the next four years,” he added.

NIMASA committed to developing blue economy through capacity building – Dakuku Temitope Adebayo The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside has reiterated that the Agency remains committed to growing the ideals of the blue economy by bringing to the fore adequate knowledge of the sector in line with the capacity building drive of the Agency. Dakuku who made this known during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos recently said that adequate knowledge of the sector would ensure fair and professional reportage. He charged the media to embrace investigative

journalism in their method of reportage as it will benefit the maritime industry and the nation at large. The DG who was represented by the Executive Director, Finance and Administration of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh also gave the assurance that the Agency will continue to partner the media in various ways, including capacity building; adding that they the fulcrum through which the activities of the Agency can be made public, thereby attracting more participation in the sector. “On our part as an Agency, we give priority to capacity building as it remains the only way the industry can grow and the Media are not left out of this. We are what we project to our stakeholders, both local and international; hence the need for the

media to embrace investigative journalism to make their reportage factual and balanced”, he said. Speaking further, he stated that the Agency remains committed to the ideals of actualising the Blue Economy, which deals with the totality of all economic activity associated with the oceans, seas, harbours and coastal zones. The concept also includes; aquaculture, biomedicine, boats and shipbuilding, ship repairs, defense and security, amongst others all geared towards wealth and job creation for the growth and development of the Nigerian economy. He also highlighted other steps the Agency is taking to ensure a robust maritime sector to include the drafting of a dedicated anti-piracy bill,

which is before the National Assembly, to provide the requisite framework for the fight, prosecution and punishment of piracy and other related crimes in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea, expected to be passed to law soon. Also, the Agency has the approval for the acquisition of intelligence gathering maritime domain awareness assets and military response assets to fight pirates and make Nigeria’s maritime domain safe for economic activities. Also speaking during the event, the President of the Shipping Correspondent of Nigeria (SCAN), Mr. Yusuf Babalola commended the Management of NIMASA for its strides in transforming the maritime sector, through various Stakeholder oriented policies.

Glo EVC, Bella Disu, 65 others clinch IoD certification Ladesope Ladelokun The Executive Vice Chairman, Globacom, Mrs Bella Disu, and 65 other Directors of various organisations have clinched the certification of the prestigious Institute of Directors (IoD). The 66 directors were admitted into the body of directors at the February 2019 New Members Induction ceremony of the Institute held at Eko Hotels last Thursday. While Mrs Disu was one of those who bagged the Institute’s full membership, some others got associate

membership. Three Directors got the life membership at the induction ceremony where the Institute’s 1st Vice President, Chief Chris Okunowo administered the charge. President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute, Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Mohammed, admonished the inductees on the importance of corporate governance as a panacea to being impactful and successful leaders. Alhaji Rufai equally underscored the need for continuous learning for the directors in order for them to remain competitive and on top of their game. In his keynote address with the theme “Eight

Technologies every Director needs to be aware of”, the Chief Economist for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr Andrew Nevin, opined that the number of private sector companies ought to be increased in Nigeria to ameliorate poverty. According to him, t the largest foreign exchange earner for Nigeria is its human capital domiciled in the diaspora. He mentioned eight technologies including Cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, Drones, Virtual Reality, Internet of Things, Robotics and Blockchain, which he said were germane and encouraged the inductees to familiarise themselves with the technologies which would aid their capacity and

competence. Mr Akin Fanimokun of First Bank in his response on behalf of the inductees promised that the new members would uphold the ethics of the profession at all times and in all places as by good ambassadors of the IoD. The Institute was founded 35 years ago to professionally develop Directors by imbuing them with necessary leadership skills to enable them to lead their organisations well and consequently contribute their quota to the development of the country. Mrs Disu, who joined Globacom in 2004, doubles as a Director of Julius Berger Plc, a construction company which is reputed as the biggest in Nigeria.

Merger:

Diamond Bank introduces PayDay Loan Motolani Oseni and Joseph Inokotong As part of its merger benefits to customers, Diamond Bank, Nigeria’s leading retail Bank has introduced PayDay Loan to ease the financial burden of customers. PayDay Loan is an instant salary advance service available to all customers who have their salary accounts in Diamond Bank. This is service quick, convenient and does not require any paperwork, collateral or guarantor. PayDay Loan was originally an Access Bank Salary Advance Scheme that provides instant credit to its salaried customers and individuals whose salaries are processed through the electronic payment platform REMITA. As a result of the merger between Diamond Bank and Access Bank, the instant loan service has now been extended to Diamond Bank salary account holders. “Customers are at the heart of our decision to create one of Nigeria’s leading banks. The combination of Access Bank and Diamond Bank will result in real benefits and that is why we have introduced the PayDay Loan scheme to Diamond Bank customers. Together, we will bring the power of banking to millions across Nigeria, focused on speed, service and security. TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2019

VOL. 3

NO. 888

N100

It has always been politics of ethnicity and religion but not ideology The pattern of voting in the February 23, 2019 presidential election clearly defines what Nigeria has always been-a nation cursed and fragmented by all forms of segregates, mostly ethnic and religious. While Muhammadu Buhari, a serving president of the whole country won only in states from northern part of the country populated by his ethnic kinsmen with same Muslim background, his main challenger, former vice President Atiku Abubakar, won in all the South East and South-South states where mainly Christians live as well as some states from the South West. Atiku’s victory in the Southern part of the country is attributed to a few factors including the choice of his deputy who is a Christian from the South East. When Nigerians vote, they vote tribe and religion, not merit. When Nigerians want to go to school, their parents seek admission for them in schools where majority of the students share their religious inclination. In offices and business places, Nigerians fraternize on the basis of tribe and religion. If an Iboman is a minister, most of the contractors coming to his office would be Ibos. When a Yoruba man is a minister, every contractor or supplier coming to seek job there would be Yoruba, the same is true of Hausa, Fulani, Igala, Ebira, Nupe, Ijaw, Edo, Itshekiri, all tribes. When job vacancies are announced, directors and others in privileged positions begin to look for their kinsmen. They are not bothered about hiring competent hand that would deliver quality service but see it as opportunities to bring in their relatives, no matter their qualifications and experiences. Whatever we do in Nigeria, it is about tribe, religion and other mundane and nepotistic considerations and not, never, about the wellbeing of Nigeria. It has never been ‘Nigeria First.’ Following his victory at the polls, President Buhari is expected to shakeup his executive cabinet by dropping some ministers and other aides while appointing new ones. Everywhere you go in the country, politicians are discussing it; the way citizens are feeding on the matter. Rather than thinking of fishing out competent professionals to get into the system and fix the country whose economy is in tatters currently, what they will be calculating is ‘who from my tribe or religion will the president appoint,’ and when the announcement is made, people would go and do a count of who and who were appointed. They will want to know how many of the appointees are Christians? How many are Muslims? How many are Ibos? How many are Yorubas? How many Hausas and Fulanis were appointed into the cabinet? Those are the questions Nigerians ask; and so round pegs are forced into square holes, in the end in order to create ethnic and religious balance; a sort of nonsense. Looking back in times, to the early morning of March 5, 1958 when Daily Times broke the news that “NORTH REJECTS THE MOTION ON FIVE

SHILLINGS WAGE,” one would begin to wonder why lawmakers from a particular region of the country would rise up together to reject or support a motion for uniform wage in a country. One would have expected to see lawmakers rise, individually to debate for or against the motion, any motion at all, rather than on the basis of religion or ethnic divides. According to the Daily Times story, legislators from the Northern House of Assembly rejected the motion by 71 to eight saying it failed to address disparities in the cost of living.

That was the pattern of our thinking, our politics, even before the nation attained independence; and it has continued to be like that. When the North resolves on something, anything for that matter, the East will reject the resolution, same with the west; and it would be the same, if the reverse is the case. It is so bad, the level of fragmentation in Nigeria; that many have asked why did we become one country in the first place? If you open up a chat on social media today, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, any platform. The

next thing is that young Nigerians would take up the matter and the next thing is that the debate would turn to abuses; Yorubas calling Ibos unprintable names, same with Ibos insulting Yorubas, same with Hausas and all others. Young people who are supposed to shine the light of emancipation and progress due to education and social interaction have eaten the bread of deceit kept for them by their fathers and are therefore biting gravel in their mouths. And Nigeria sinks further into the abyss.
