‘I’m amazed how I traversed Nigeria during campaigns’ Continued from page 1 some residents and political leaders of the Federal Capital Territory, led by the Permanent Secretary, Christian Ohaa, who came to pay him Sallah homage on the occasion of the Eid-El-Fitr festivities. The President used his reelectioneering campaigns to buttress his point, wondering that the crowd that thronged out to welcome him in each state he visited still intrigues him. He said that he couldn’t have engaged in vote buying, if he were to muster the financial strength to mobilise those crowd to vote in his favour. Also speaking on his experience in the recent polls, the president seized the opportunity, to mock Senator Philip Aduda, of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who sat by his right hand side. He said irrespective of the fact that FCT residents may not have voted massively for him, he owes them a mandate to secure the FCT as that will be ensuring protection for himself and the Vice President. In an extempore manner, he said: “I want to appreciate the number two man of the country because he knows what we are going through very quietly. I am very pleased that you came with this very powerful constituency. “I want to appeal to you to remain exemplary so that those under you will know that the country is doing very well. If you break down and complain, the impact will reverberate all over and then government will not be popular and whatever efforts we are making will not be
appreciated. “I have just spoken to the senator on my left (Philip Aduda) and I told him that his constituency did not vote for me. So I was very pleased that when they made the arrangement they put him very far away from me. I have all the results of all constituencies. I am not threatening FCT because to make FCT secure is to make myself secure and the Vice President. I think they are necessary evil that that was why they decided to vote for PDP. “During my long journey to this place, 2003, 2007, 2011, those were interesting political developments that enabled me visit all the local governments in this country, all 774 local governments. First port of call whenever I visit any local government was to visit the community leader for understanding and support. “I am very pleased that Nigerians understand me that although I was a governor, minister of petroleum and one time head of state, people know I don’t have a lot of money to give. So when I went round, I smiled and greeted them and I think it has helped. Because by the time I went to campaign for my second and last term constitutionally, I visited all the states this time around, some two states in a day, I thank God for giving me the stamina to do it. “What impressed me most was the turnout in all the states and FCT. The number of those who turned out were more than what anyone can afford to pay or force to come and listen. So I am very pleased that a lot of Nigerians have voted me, sympathised with me for what I went through between 2003 and
2019. “I went to court up to Supreme Court and in 2011, I went to court for eight months. And in the last one, God answered our prayers and gave us victory, and brought in technology through the permanent voters card. And INEC said whoever is aggrieved should go to court. “You all know as much as I know that most of my supporters are looking for the next day’s meal, we don’t have money to give. In 2011, I said God dey, in 2015 God brought technology PVC and that is how we won. “I thank you very much for those of you who suffered very much to support me. And I congratulate you for being happy that I made it and I assure you that I will continue to do my best in spite of the toughness of my neighbours”. Earlier speaking, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said that Nigeria was on the threshold of greatness, irrespective of the security challenges that still plagues the country. Osinbajo warned that government would stop at nothing to stop those stoking the embers of discord or divisiveness. The Vice President also said the fact that President Buhari is on ground today to celebrate the Eid-El-Fitr after his initial health challenges two years ago is something to thank God for. He said the renewed vigour and strength of the President was a manifestation of divine intervention of God in the affairs of Nigeria. The VP said: “First, let me congratulate you on this very solemn occasion that marks

APC, govs preach peace, unity as Muslims mark Eid -el –Fitri Tunde Opalana, Abuja, Moses Oyediran, Enugu, Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin, & Nosa Akenzua, Asaba The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Muslim Ummah to continue to imbibe the spirit, virtues and lessons of Ramadan in re-dedicating itself to the task of nation building. APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre IssaOnilu, gave the advice in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, while felicitating with Muslims as they celebrate Eid -el -Fitri. “In commemoration of the 2019 Eid –el- Fitri signalling the end of the Ramadan fast, the APC rejoices with all Muslim faithful and indeed, all Nigerians for the successful completion of the month-long fasting. “The party implores Muslim Ummah to continue to imbibe the spirit, virtues and lessons of Ramadan which include sacrifice, modesty and discipline in rededicating itself to the task of nation building. “We equally admonish Muslims and non-Muslims to cultivate the virtues of tolerance in their relationship with fellow Nigerians and shun all divisive acts and tendencies capable of destabilising the country,” he said. The APC spokesman added that in the wake of security challenges such as terrorism, armed banditry and kidnapping in parts of the country, Nigerians should remain vigilant and security conscious. He further added that while being security conscious, Nigerians should report suspicious activity around them to relevant security agencies.
He stressed that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration holds the protection of lives and property of every Nigerian sacrosanct. Issa-Onilu assured that the President would not relent in swiftly dealing with real and perceived threats in any part of the country. He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the peace, progress, stability and prosperity of the country and to grant its leaders at all levels the wisdom to successfully steer the ship of the nation. Also, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has enjoined all Nigerians to take advantage of the celebration to offer special prayers for the peace, unity, security and progress of the country. Governor Ugwuanyi in a message congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and other Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan, stating that Nigerians stand to benefit immensely from the spiritual rebirth offered by the fast. He, therefore, emphasised the compelling need for all Nigerians to continue to live in peace and harmony, to love and cherish one another as a people of “one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity”. While wishing Nigerians a pleasant and peaceful celebration, Gov. Ugwuanyi urged them to “remain committed to the core values that strengthen the bond that brought us together as a prosperous nation.” Similarly, Kwara State Governor, Abulrahman
AbdulRazaq, has greeted residents of the state on the successful completion of Ramadan and observance of the Eid. In the Sallah message signed by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Agboola Olarewaju, the governor said: “I greet our Muslim brethren on the successful completion of the (fasting) month of Ramadan. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitri, I pray Almighty Allah accepts our prayers and worships before, during and after Ramadan. “As we bid Ramadan goodbye, I urge Kwarans of all faiths to not jettison the spirit of Ramadan. We should remain our brother’s keepers, promote common humanity, do to others what we want done to us, and be good citizens.” He also called on the faith community to continue to pray for the new administration, saying “our agenda is to serve the overall interest of the people and build a Kwara of our dream.” In the same vein, Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has felicitated with the Muslim Community on the celebration of the Eid-el-Fitri, saying that though Ramadan fast is over, it is important that the lessons of the season are sustained and replicated in their daily lives for the good of society. It is my hope that today brings joy to all of your homes, both here in Delta State, Nigeria and around the world,” he said. Don’t drag our party into your crisis, PDP tells APC Tunde Opalana, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to involve the opposition in the current crisis rocking the ruling party. The PDP counselled APC to face its self-inflicted woes instead of seeking a face-saving measure by dragging the name of the PDP into its internal wrangling, bordering on the incompetence, recklessness and treasury looting by its leaders. The party noted that the APC, by bringing out its dirty linen to the market place, at this time, has again demonstrated its insensitivity and contempt towards the values and feelings of Nigerians. In a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party noted that it is most reprehensible that after pushing Nigerians into anguish and economic misery, the crisis-ridden APC will not allow the citizenry to celebrate the end of Ramadan in peace. “It is imperative to state that the PDP, as a responsible party, will not join the APC in its shameless dance, yet, the APC must know that it must answer for its failures, depravities and unrestrained looting of our
national treasury in the last four years. “This is the same APC, whose National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, confirmed as a sanctuary of looters and unpatriotic people, when he declared that, “once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven”. “It has also become clear to Nigerians that the APC is fixated on the PDP and has become feverish by the reinvention of the PDP to serve the interest of the people. This is in addition to the fact that majority of Nigerians now believe more in our party, the PDP, after seeing through the lies, deceit and failures of the APC and its government”, said the party. The PDP asked the ruling party to face the truism that having divided the Nigerian people, wrecked the once robust economy, returned the nation to a debtor status and brought so much misery to the extent that compatriots now resort to suicide and slavery mission abroad as options. It insisted that Nigerians cannot continue to lend it any support. The PDP further commended the determined optimism expressed by majority of Nigerians for the retrieval of its stolen Presidential mandate at the tribunal as well as the spontaneous jubilation across the country over the victory of the PDP in state

governorship elections which shows that the people are eager to have the PDP back at the saddle of governance. The party said: “This is because, while in office, the PDP, as a people-oriented party, remained dedicated to the wellbeing of the people. “The PDP administration salvaged our nation from a pariah status, paid off our foreign debts, grew the economy to become one of the fastest growing economies on the world map, revolutionized our aviation, telecommunication, automobile, education, agriculture, sports, entertainment, health, housing, railway, power and other critical sectors of our economy for the good of the people. “The PDP also strengthened our democratic institutions, created antigraft agencies, equipped our
security agencies, engendered equity and social justice, maintained a strict adherence to rule of law, respect for the rights of citizens and provided electoral reforms that guaranteed credible elections in our country. “Nigerians are saddened that the incompetent, divisive, vindictive and deceitful APC has reversed all the gains achieved by the PDP in a space of four years. If anything, the APC has only succeeded in bringing economic misery, escalated insecurity, piling foreign debts, dilapidated infrastructure and despondency in our country”. The PDP therefore counselled the APC to seek restitution for the misery it has caused the nation instead of always looking for scapegoats where none exist.

‘I’m amazed how I traversed Nigeria during campaigns’ Continued from page 3 the end of the Ramadan. “I want to say that God almighty has been extremely good to you and to our government. I recall about two years ago when I had to host this particular event because you were away on medical leave at the time. “But God has been so good, not only did he bring you back healthier than when you left, but has also been gracious enough for you to have a second opportunity to lead our great country. I thank the almighty God for you and for all of us who have been a part of your government and who have been a part of what God has done in our midst. “Our country as it is today is at a threshold of greatness, you have said so many times. Any situation where something great and something important is about to happen, usually you will have very many and negative opposing voices that want to keep that thing from happening. “I believe that our country is at a threshold of the breakthrough that we have been praying for and hoping for all these many years. And this is why many challenges are going on; challenges around security, religion, people who are stocking up embers of doom, religious grievance and ethnic divisions and all that. “But this gathering is one of those gatherings that we are at liberty, political leadership, religious leadership to demonstrate to our people that this country is a country of one people, the Nigerian people. They may be different in their faith and ethnicity but we are one people? We are one and united people. “I want to commend all our leaders who are here for making this tradition, that we will come together - Christians, Muslims, and people of different faith to demonstrate that this country is a united country. And that those who will want to stoic up embers of division we will not allow them to do so. “So I want to urge all our
leaders here that we must not allow the rhetoric of religion to supersede the rhetoric of unity. We must also speak up; we must seek ways that will unite our country. “We cannot keep quiet because there are so many negative statements being made every day and sometimes we ignore those statements and say these are people who have no understanding. But if we allow these negative statements to continue then they will define our country and will define the situation of our country. “As I have said our country is destined for greatness and I pray that the almighty God will lead us to that greatness. And as we move day by day towards that greatness, those who want to bring us down that God almighty will prevent them from doing so. “I want to commend you for the great leadership you have shown in the past four years and in this second term. I pray that may God almighty will help you and strengthen you, give you the grace and understanding and empower you even more to be able to do the things you desire in your heart to do make this country really great”. Among those present at the homage were the former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Others were the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu; the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, and the Director General of Department for State Service (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi; Civil Defence FCT Commandant; Permanent Secretary, State House, Jalal Arabi; Senator Philip Aduda; Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele and former Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu.

PDP Reps free to campaign for aspirants, says House caucus Henry Omunu, Abuja The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives caucus has authorised its members to campaign for any aspirant of their choice for the position of speaker in the national interest and deepening the nation’s democracy. The House PDP caucus made this position known on Tuesday in a statement released in Abuja, to mark the Eid-el-Fitr by the Minority Leader, Rep. Leo Ogor. According to the caucus, while the nation looks forward to the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, the PDP House caucus is leaving no stone unturned in furtherance of its determination to proactively decide the final outcome of the contest for leadership of the House in ways that would ultimately ensure that the people’s will ultimately prevails. Declaring its unflinching
commitment to the principles and ethos of democracy, the PDP House caucus disclosed that it has endorsed its members’ decision to work with speakership aspirants from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and are further allowed to attend meetings, participate in campaigns, strategy sessions and other activities of any aspirant of their choice. “While the PDP House Caucus has taken the decision with clear focus on the national interest as well as the future strategic goals of our party, we are not unaware that a few may unfortunately, feel inclined to go overboard, nibbling dangerously at carrots dangled before them without adequately heeding appropriate guidelines. “Nonetheless, such risks have to be taken occasionally as part of the sacrifice for the national interest which is an overriding consideration for us in our great party,” Rep. Ogor stated.
Meanwhile, the caucus has felicitated with Muslim across the country as they celebrate the Eid El Fitri. “After the focused and exacting spiritual discipline that the fasting in the holy month of Ramadan entails, it is our fervent wish that the collective supplications to our Almighty creator over the fate of our nation, the growth of its democracy and welfare of citizens become a reality. “May good deeds and the virtues of love, tolerance, empathy and other noble attributes of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.) continue to grow and flourish among the entire populace so that we can all reach out to one another in the true pursuit of peace, unity and progress,” the caucus added. It therefore wished all Muslims across Nigeria and the entire world, the infinite grace and enduring mercies of Almighty Allah on this joyous occasion of Eid -el -Fitri.

Abdulrazaq mulls supplementary budget to accommodate new priorities Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin
Kwara state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said he would send a supplementary budget to the state House of Assembly fund intervention projects in parts of the state. “We will have to send a supplementary budget to the state Assembly to accommodate some (interventionist) projects,” Gov. AbdulRazaq said during a visit to the scene of the twostorey building that collapsed in Ikokoro area of Ilorin, the state capital. Gov. AbdulRazaq sympathised with those who
sustained injuries in the incident, pledging to pay their hospital bills. The governor said the state needs to procure necessary equipment for the state’s emergency responders to evacuate people during such incidents. He had earlier told officials of the Ministry of Water Resources to submit a memo detailing everything they need to fix the water crisis in the state, saying such requisitions would be captured in the supplementary budget the new government will send to the legislature for approval. According to him, the water works must deliver constant
water supply to identifiable areas within the Ilorin metropolis in the next 100 days. He said such supply can be delivered to other areas of the capital city and across the state in phases, warning that he would not take excuses in the delivery of the key campaign promises. A victim of the building collapse, Dr. Richard Ifookorie, thanked the governor for the visit, adding that “we are very grateful for your kindness. God bless you.” According to him, it took the efforts of the neighbours to rescue him and his child from the rubbles.

According to the command`s spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, there has been any incident so far, assuring that the police had put in place adequate security measures to ensure that residents go about their businesses without fear of molestation from any quarter. At Karu, a satellite town in the FCT, security was tight as policemen screened those who came to participate in the eid prayers. The men of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) were seen regulating and controlling vehicular traffic along the Karu-Jikwoyi Road during the prayers.
FCT fun-seekers say previous sallah celebrations more fun
Fun-seekers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have described the 2019 Eid celebrations as less fun compared to that of 2018. The respondents, who spoke at the Novare (Shoprite) Gateway Mall, said the city felt emptier this year as there were fewer events to attend. Although, families were gathered at the mall to watch movies and shop, the vibe was a little quieter than most holidays. Respondents attribute the situation to the holidays falling in the middle of the week and the cluster of public holidays the week before. Many of those interviewed confirmed taken their children out on May 27 (Children’s Day) and enjoying a lavish holiday on May 29 (Inauguration Day). Mrs. Maryam Bilau said “we have had too many holidays and we have one more so people are trying to be careful with money. “The last few weeks have been really celebratory. But, Eid is special and should be celebrated more. This year, it seems people are trying to be more low-key,” she said. Joshua Ayamkpa stated that he brought his family to enjoy the holiday as they did not have the chance during Children’s Day. He also noted that the festivities were at its lowest ebb. “Honestly, this year is not as hot as last year in terms of celebrations, but it’s understandable. Too many holidays and no money; 2018 was far more fun,” he said.

The man in the synagogue at 56
Emmanuel Umohinyang
One of the hallmarks of truly great men and women is their ability to shine beyond the estimation of their adversaries, even in the most difficult of situations. The distinguishing factor for such people is that even when they seem to fall, they get even stronger in spirit and never fail to forge ahead From infancy the traits of greatness are always very clear to see in such people for those who can truly perceive. For such people, a clear vision, dedication, commitment, hard work and an unwavering commitment to God is a defining virtue. It does not really matter what their background may look like, the unique goal they have set for themselves is always the driving force. For those who God has obviously created for a mission and are able to realize that early enough, the grace to excel is ever present. Indeed, for Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly called T.B. Joshua, his life and impact on humanity could be likened to great book, each with an interesting chapter. This is in view of the fact that this great man of God is many things personifiedapostle of our Lord, Jesus Christ, hope to millions of hopeless people globally, teacher, chorister, philanthropist, author, father of millions, hope personified, succor bearer, friend of the poor, a gift to this generation and more. His church, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) singularly brought Ikotun-Egbe once considered a jungle to prominence on the world map due to its impact on that neighbourhood. This is because it’s coming to that environment was such that the big and mighty across the globe started trooping to that axis for spiritual healing. With this came a major boom for the economy of Ikotun and its environs as millions of businesses sprang up to key into the great opportunity. Hotel and allied business received a major boost, earning millions of dollars due to large numbers of foreign visitors trooping into Nigeria from across the
world. It was not for nothing therefore when hoteliers shouted from the roof tops that government should save their businesses when some people tried to take advantage of the controversial building collapse at the church to pull down TB. Joshua. This is instructive. SCOAN, Joshua’s church is on record as “Nigeria’s biggest tourist attraction and the most visited destination by tourists in Africa”. The Federal Government had in the recent past through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) acknowledged that six out of every ten foreign travelers coming into Nigeria are synagogue-bound, raking millions of dollars into government coffers in the process. Using technology which has made his job very impactful, Joshua has continued to reach all the nooks and crannies of the world like never before. His church’s television channel, Emmanuel T.V, through which he preaches undiluted word of God is the world’s most viewed channel on YouTube. One of the striking things about this great preacher of the word is that, not only does he emphasize holiness, he is never tired of preaching about the importance of love and giving, which he says are essential messages of Jesus Christ. He even takes it further by practical demonstration, which is exemplified in action from time to time in different parts of the world. Even Joshua’s critics acknowledge that he has no doubt demonstrated that he is number one friend of the poor around this clime. From the abundance that God has given him, the Prophet has reached out to millions of people from far and near, most of whom are not members of his church. He has even taken it further by making his members toe the same line of giving to the needy in the society. According to him, this was a major message of our Lord Jesus Christ and
needed to be done to give hope to hopeless in the society. Aside this, Joshua continually teaches that there is love in sharing because whatever God has given us does not belong to us alone. It is therefore not surprising that SCOAN distributes lorry loads of food stuffs regularly to the needy in different parts of the country. Though he has his own share of challenges like every human being, this great televangelist is a man not ready to be consumed by negatives. This he clearly demonstrated as a child with what seemed like a hopeless future. However, his strong conviction which was sharpened by his early connection with the Bible opened his eyes to the words of God and marked a major mile stone in his life. This no doubt is one of the things that confounds his detractors as they never fail to wonder where he gets the strength to rise when they think he has fallen. Even Forbes, the famous international magazine had in 2011 described Joshua as third richest pastor in Nigeria, though the church did well by debunking the report. The magazine must have relied on the Prophet’s philanthropic activities which covers many areas including scholarship, health, sports and more as the basis for this. For instance, Joshua’s church was reported to have sponsored a Nigerian student for a PhD at Oxford University in 2012 to the tune of one hundred thousand pounds, same for thousands of others sponsored from primary to university levels, locally and internationally. This was aside providing over five hundred thousand dollars worth of humanitarian aid to victims of earthquake in Ecuador in April, 2016. The Forbes report however has its positive side as the report suggests that Joshua has a huge financial war chest. The truth of it all is that Forbes was only acknowledging that Joshua was expending so much in an assignment he is carrying out so diligently.
Other widely respected international magazines have also named him among the world’s most influential personalities. However, it is a thing of joy that nobody has linked him with purchasing private jets and needless show of wealth in a nation so blessed, but with so many poor people. Also, he has not claimed to be far more popular than anyone, though the local and international media will not let him rest because of his ever-growing popularity. Curiously, this is a man who rarely travels out of Nigeria to other parts of the world, yet has his presence felt in far distant places and loved by many who have never come across him, thanks to technology. Even though his Arigidi-Akoko birth place may not feel his physical presence, but the people take pride in his touching their lives through regular support over the years through infrastructural support. T.B. Joshua’s story is that of grass to grace and his people are excited that he is making them proud around the world, a feat for which they cannot but thank God. Indeed, what the T.B. Joshua story teaches us are multi-faceted. First, his life teaches us that God is the ultimate decider of our fate and in Him we must put our hopes and aspirations. Even Joshua practically demonstrated this by getting closer to God, using the Bible as a compass to navigate his future at a tender age. Secondly, when God elevated him, he remained level-headed and demonstrated practical teachings of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Thirdly and most importantly, he has raised and is still raising leaders of the word to join others in raising Godly men to the glory of God and benefit of mankind. As he celebrates yet another milestone, on June 12, 2019, here is wishing the man in the Synagogue, Prophet T.B. Joshua, a happy birthday.
For the health of distressed Nigerians
Aniebo Nwamu
Every health-conscious person must have benefitted from association with health workers – doctors, lab scientists, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, radiologists and dentists. In several health conferences and programmes, the advice we get from these physicians is uniform: always go for a check-up to determine the state of your health, whether you’re sick or not. Those near age 40 and older, in particular, are advised to do comprehensive checks at least once every year. Most of the time, it’s poverty that keeps doctors’ clients away in a country that has no health insurance scheme. For one to complete the normal tests, one needs upwards of N100, 000. And the likelihood of discovering one or two diseases after the tests is always high. Next is the treatment. See why the poor are afraid to even go for the tests? Even the rich and the not-so-poor (I’m afraid to call them “middle class” in Nigeria) are guilty of neglecting their own health. We take our cars to the mechanics at the first sign of trouble. We invite plumbers to fix our bathrooms. When the TV set, computer or generator malfunctions, we always seek the relevant technicians. But when it concerns our health – our life that is irreplaceable and upon which everything else depends – we refuse to pay attention. No irony could be greater. Ordinarily, many are health-conscious. But we tend to seek diagnoses of our ailments in unorthodox ways. Some choose faith healing. Even orthodox healers recognise that faith healing is real, however. Herbal medicine is another. Our ancestors depended on this from prehistoric times. Africans have allowed much of this knowledge to perish. The in-thing is to study Pharmacy in university without acquiring any knowledge of the roots, barks and leaves of certain plants. Many
of the great medicine men of old died without passing the knowledge of herbs to their offspring. Today, 419 healers have taken over, prescribing loads of cash to be delivered to them rather than medicine to be taken by their patients. The Asians have not been foolish like us Africans. I’m not preaching against orthodox medicine. I can’t do that – it’s what I too depend on. But I also apply native wisdom. Any good doctor would tell you that every drug has a side-effect. You would have noticed that many doctors – those who prescribe basketfuls of tablets, capsules and injections to be taken thrice a day after meals – hardly take the drugs themselves. If your doctor doesn’t take drugs, why receive them from him? That’s one of the fears we nurse. And that’s why many fail to go for check-ups and possible treatment unless they are very sick. Negligence in Nigerian public hospitals is a source of fear too: some have met their own death on account of negligence. A few years ago, one of my friends went to the hospital to treat malaria when he felt the symptoms. The doctor, a young man like himself, ordered a few tests and confirmed he had malaria and an infection. He gave him an antibiotic – gentamicin, I think – which damaged my friend’s kidneys. For the next four years, he was on dialysis that consumed all his money. By the time he died two years ago, his family was heavily indebted. Another fear is that of quacks. And quacks are not just those who have no medical certificates. Even some qualified doctors are quacks, thanks partly to exam malpractice, the collapse of the education system, and admission rackets. The universities have been producing incompetent physicians. I know someone who never consults a doctor that is younger than 60 years old.
Then, there are misconceptions that prove difficult to clear. Those opposed to immunisation against diseases like polio, for instance, are not all illiterates. Even trained doctors have helped to spread dangerous rumours that, I guess, are sustained by politics – international politics this time. Have you noticed that the mortality rate among HIV/AIDS sufferers has declined? Twenty years ago, it seemed as if HIV/AIDS was about to wipe out Africans. Perhaps the disease has killed an “appreciable” number of people in Third World countries and now has to be stopped. I learned that a cure has been found for it, but the cheap drug would not be in the market until some pharmaceutical companies in the West recoup their investments in antiretroviral drugs. Who knows what to believe? Malaria. Everyone seems able to identify this disease. Though it’s prevalent in Nigeria due to mosquito attacks, many have shortened their own life by receiving a wrong diagnosis and a wrong treatment. It shares symptoms with some killer diseases, and, by the time the patient rules out malaria as the problem, the damage to vital organs could have been done. Stress, for instance, makes one weak and sleepy just like malaria. Rather than take bed rest, the ignorant one may ingest drugs that are injurious to her health. Usually, the next suspect after malaria is typhoid fever. The number of positive cases recorded in Widal tests has eroded the credibility of many labs. But, since clean water is a luxury here and many foods hardly pass the hygiene test, people do not bother to seek a second opinion. Along with malaria, stress could be the harbinger of the silent killer called hypertension. I’m not a doctor but even doctors don’t know the actual causes of many diseases. Hypertension or
high blood pressure (HBP), they say, has genetic sources but they have also not discarded tension or worry that lay people often attribute it to. The physicians agree that “environmental factors” play a role. There’s hardly any Nigerian today that can successfully ward off anxiety in everyday life. Unpaid school fees, unpaid rents, unaffordable hospital bills, lack of jobs, lack of food, lack of security, lack of spouse, loss of loved ones, political tensions, uncertainty about the future – who can avoid these stressors? Diabetes is HBP’s cousin that has been on the rampage also. Many Nigerians in their 40s have high blood sugar levels. Doctors implicate the pancreas’ inability to do its job, but consumption of sugar has equally been named as a culprit. Lack of exercise is also implicated. Sportsmen, farmers, labourers and others who do strenuous tasks – who sweat profusely on the farms or on the fields – are unwittingly taking great medicine. Despite the presence of numerous regulatory agencies, most foods we eat and offer guests are little less than processed sugar: the beers, the malt and soft drinks, the snacks. I wonder why these firms have not been put out of business by low demand for their products. I think Nigerians have to be saved from themselves. And one sure way is by making harmful products very expensive. Tobacco, brewery and certain so-called beverage companies ought to be taxed heavily. Good health depends a lot on our lifestyle – the things we eat, the exercises we do. Physicians advise us to eat everything in moderation. Bad cholesterol in fried/processed foods is linked to obesity, HBP, stroke and heart failure. We Africans ought to be eating fresh foods – including vegetables and fruit, not processed or canned ones. Sweet things kill.

Cleric urges Nigerians to pray for Buhari’s success
The Chief Imam of Alhaja Sideeqat Ahmad Megida Central Mosque, Ikorodu, Lagos, Nurudeen Abdul-Kadiri, has urged Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari with prayer to enable him succeed in his second tenure. Abdul-Kadiri made the plea after the Eid-el-Fitr prayer held in the mosque premises in Ikorodu on Tuesday. According to him, there is need for all Nigerians to support Buhari morally and spiritually for him to achieve tremendous success during his second tenure. “The expectations of the Muslims are that President Buhari should continue on the part he had started such as the issue of the security; although our president is trying in ensuring security of lives and property in Nigeria. “Government should revamp the economy and improve on policies and programmes that would benefit the downtrodden in the society. This government should try to create more jobs, and there is need to sustain the fight against corruption as well as indiscipline in the society,” he said. The Islamic cleric commended the oneness of Muslims throughout the fasting period and urged Nigerians to continue to love one another, just as he advised Nigerians to endeavour to play their roles and sustain all the lessons learnt during Ramadan.

...Idris tasks elected politicians to prioritise security The Emir of Zazzau and Chairman, Kaduna state Council of Emirs and Chiefs, Dr. Shehu Idris, on Tuesday urged elected officers to prioritise security of lives and property of Nigerians above any other issue. He made the appeal while delivering a speech to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at his palace in Zaria, Kaduna state. The traditional ruler observed that the security of lives and property was paramount, hence the need for government at all levels to accord it the desired attention it deserves to attain peace and prosperity. He said that “we want to appeal to all elected officers to do everything possible to fulfil their campaign promises and endeavour to carry all manner of people along toward an all-inclusive government for peace and tranquillity to prevail. “We want them to accord special attention to security of lives and property; they should also ensure the provision of sound and quality education, ease access to healthcare and farm inputs and implements and other social amenities.” The emir appreciated Gov. Nasiru el-Rufai for executing meaningful and developmental projects across the state in the last four years, especially in the area of peace, education, fight against drug abuse and banditry, among others. “We want to use this medium to extend our sallah message to Gov. Nasiru elRufai and applaud him for his zeal and determination to restore lasting peace in the state.
“It will not be out of order to use this opportunity to congratulate you for taking the oath of office for the second term. We pray and hope Almighty Allah will guide you aright and give you wisdom to take Kaduna to greater heights. “We pray Almighty Allah will give you the strength to build upon the successes already established and we urge our subjects to continue to cooperate with the security agencies by providing useful information toward stemming criminality,” he added. The monarch appealed to federal and state governments and lawmakers to be united to pursue a common goal of rebuilding the economy toward making it among the top economies globally. He also advised government to introduce more programmes to empower people to enable them become self-reliant in both rural and urban areas. The emir encouraged Muslims to sustain the lessons learnt during Ramadan such as humility, fear of Almighty Allah, forgiveness, obedience, care for the poor, needy and orphans, among other good virtues. “These are good lessons worthy of retention by Muslims. As good Muslims, you are not expected to indulge in social vices after the month of Ramadan. “We hope as Muslims you will continue to work and practice these virtues and you will continue to obey and respect Islamic rules and regulations governing your lives.
“We also want to appeal to you to support and respect those in position of authority by obeying all rules and regulations governing our existence as a nation,” he advised. He urged Muslims to continue to pray for peace to prevail across Nigeria, noting that peace is critical to the corporate existence of Nigeria. Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam, Sheik Abubakar Gumi, Kofar-Gayan Lowcost Eid Praying Ground, Dr. Muhammad Aliyu, described security as the highest bounty extended to human beings by Almighty Allah. Taking his text from Qur’an and Hadith, the Chief Imam said: “There is no ni’imah (bounty or blessing) extended to human beings by their creator like the blessing of security. “This blessing is only possible when people avoid ascribing partner(s) to Almighty Allah, Qur’an says: Those who believe and do not ascribe partner to Almighty Allah, these category of people are secured. “The Prophet (May and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: He who sleeps in his house secured and healthy and he has what to eat for the day, is like a person that is given the entire wealth of this world.” Aliyu recalled that it was in line with preservation of “Tauhid” (oneness of Almighty Allah) that He (Almighty Allah) protected Quraish from hunger, poverty, cold and winter season and ensure that they were secured.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday in Abuja, urged Muslims to sustain prayers beyond the Ramadan for peaceful coexistence in the country. Secretary-General of the union, Dr. Mike Ike-Ene, made the call in an interview as the teachers felicitated with Muslims in the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr. He called on Muslims to remain steadfast in their prayers to enable the country to overcome challenges confronting it. “I want to on behalf of NUT and teachers all over the country to congratulate our colleagues, our Muslim brothers, who have taken it upon themselves to join and complete the fasting. “It is a thing of joy because they have been in prayer for this country; this country deserves and needs prayers in all angles for peace, love and unity to be sustained.” According to Ike-Ene, once these elements are in place, there will be development in the country, there will be no insurgency, no Boko Haram, no robbery or kidnapping, insisting that “all these are happening, because there is no love,” he said.
Sallah: Bank customers decry poor network, insufficient funds in ATMs
Bank customers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday decried poor network and insufficient funds in majority of the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in the capital. As at the time of filing this report, many bank customers were stranded and standing on long queues at various ATMs waiting to make different transactions. Some of the banks visited were First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Access Bank, Union Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Stanbic IBTC in Area 3, Garki. Other ATM spots visited were Fidelity and Stanbic IBTC at Shoprite, Jaiz Bank, GTB in Apo and Zenith Bank, Garki. Some of the customers, seen making different transactions expressed displeasure at the situation and appealed to the relevant authorities to address the problem. At the GTB Area 3, a customer, Mrs. Liz Gabriel, said she took a taxi with the last money she had only to pay off the cab man and realise there was no cash in the ATM. Another customer at First Bank, John Jika, said he had been to several ATMs and there was no cash before he came to First Bank, bemoaning“I do not understand why the banks will keep treating customers like this. “Everybody is aware that there is public holiday today and tomorrow, and it is only ideal for the management of banks to ensure their ATMs are functional. It is very insensitive of them to make their customers go through so much stress just to take back their monies at the time they need it.’’ Another customer, Miss Funke Kadir, said she was supposed to travel and her trip had been delayed for insufficient funds in most ATMs. Kadir, who described the situation as pathetic, called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to sanction banks that do not properly monitor their ATMs.

Appointment into cabinet will be on merit – Udom Isaac Job, Uyo
Akwa Ibom state Governor Udom Emmanuel has vowed that he was ready to promote excellence and merit in appointments rather than succumb to pressure from political stakeholders and enthrone mediocrity. He warned political leaders to refrain from mounting pressure on him to influence appointments in favour of some persons and groups. Speaking during the swearing in of new head of service and permanent secretaries at the Banquet Hall of the Government house, Uyo, Gov. Udom said he may retain majority members of his cabinet because of the numerous projects he needs to complete under their supervision. “Don’t come and tell me that this person didn’t work during the election and should be dropped because everybody worked and they all supported me. If you attempt to blackmail anybody, that will
even spur me to re-appoint that person,” the governor declared. Gov. Udom charged the new Head of Service, Elder Effiong Essien and the permanent secretaries to raise the bar of excellence in the discharge of their responsibilities, assuring that more permanent secretaries would soon be appointed. “Like I always say, nobody should send me text to lobby for any candidate because that is the surest route to the disqualification of such a person. Once I receive a name of any director from a stakeholder, it means the person is not qualified and lacks self confidence,” he added. According to him, political appointments would cut across the local government areas of the state, but decried the absence of qualified technocrats from some local governments areas, an issue he said should be of serious concern to stakeholders in such areas. While congratulating the new
appointees, the governor expressed optimism in their ability to deliver and further encouraged them to exhibit a high level of professionalism and tolerance in the discharge of their responsibilities. He tasked the new head of civil service to maintain good relations between the labour unions and government for a robust industrial harmony in the state. Gov. Udom appreciated the immediate past Head of Service, Mrs. Ekerebong Akpan for her meritorious services to the state as witnessed through massive improvements in the state’s civil service. He further charged the newly sworn in permanent secretaries to abide by their oaths of office and ensure that their personal interests does not over-ride the discharge of their official duties. “People should understand that appointments as permanent secretary are not promotions that come automatically because one has reached Grade Level 17 and so cannot get to everybody,” the governor stated.

APC chieftain urges Muslims to imbibe lessons of Ramadan Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin

He stressed the need for Muslims not to wait till another Ramadan before giving alms to the less privileged in the society and assisting the needy, pointing out that Almighty Allah values alms giving and there is always appropriate reward for such act. Police arrest 29 suspects in Oyo NURTW feud

Bauchi: Bala, predecessor spat over N11.7bn in state treasury Samuel Luka, Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state has alleged that his predecessor, Mohammed Abubakar did not willingly leave N11.6 billion in the coffers of the state government as claimed by his media aide, Ali Ali. According to him, former Governor Abubakar wanted to share the N11.6 billion left in the state government’s account to his cronies few hours to his handing over. The governor who spoke through his spokesperson, Dr. Ladan Salihu at a press conference held at the Government House, Bauchi, said his predecessor did not leave the said money willingly. Dr. Salihu said that the news making the rounds in the media credited to the former Gov. Abubakar, claiming that he left over N11 billion in the coffers of the state government was untrue. He alleged that if not for the quick action of Gov. Bala Mohammed, who was then governorelect, the money would have been shared. “The state government got refunds from the federation account in the form of bonds that
were to be discounted and the money deposited into the coffers of our state government. “This money hit our account 24 hours to the swearing-in. However, 11 hours to the exit of the government, we had it on credible authority that the then governor instructed for this entire amount to be blown away in form of contract payments for cronies and friends and hangerson, in forms of other payments that were totally uncalled for. “The incumbent governor reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and got them to block these payments. I think Mohammed Abubakar would go down in history as the first governor that has qualified to have a special place in the Guinness Book of Records for profligacy in government,” the spokesman added. Salihu further alleged that “this was a governor that would have spent N11 billion in 11 hours leading to his exit from government. Nowhere in the history of leadership in this country at the level he operated was that recorded in our country. If there was a governor that would have qualified for a gold medal in the history of our country in the area of misappropriation, misapplication and mismanagement of funds, it
was the former governor.” He claimed that if the EFCC had not been contacted to put a halt and to block the state accounts, nobody would have been talking of N11 billion in the account of the state government. According to him, the N11.6 billion was part of N14.7 billion which was discounted at 16 per cent even though other states got their funds discounted at nine per cent, “so it is clear for those who are familiar with the trends in financial circles that there was an insider trading. Bauchi state government was shortchanged.” He said that despite this the attitude of the incumbent governor is that he is a man of peace, a man of aptitude and attitude in the most sincere form of governance, who wants an amicable transition process and not to join issues with the former government. Salihu threatened to open a Pandora box of the things that happened during the administration of Abubakar that were too sordid to believe, too sordid to mention and too impossible to have been done under the watch of an executive governor should they resort to telling lies to the people of Bauchi state.
Commissioner of Police in Oyo state, Shina Olukolu, says 29 members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have been arrested for hooliganism and attempted forceful take-over of the leadership of the union. Olukolu made this known in Ibadan while addressing newsmen on the activities of the command. According to him, on May 29, Dauda Adisa reported to the police that some hoodlums attacked the office of Abideen Ejiogbe, the state chairman of the NURTW at the Orita-Challenge Motor Park in Ibadan. “Adisa said the hoodlums, who came in two Micra cars, three buses and a Previa car, shot into the air and wounded some members of the union with cutlasses. “He was able to identify two of the hoodlums, who were later arrested. In addition, other suspects connected with the failed attempt to extend the violent disturbance of public peace to other areas were arrested,’’ he said. Olukolu noted that the remaining suspects were nabbed at the entrance of the venue of the inauguration of Governor Seyi Makinde. He said dangerous weapons such as guns with live cartridges, cutlasses, sharp knives, charms and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, were recovered from the suspects. The police chief alleged that the suspects aimed at using the recovered arms to attack members of the public during the inauguration ceremony. Olukolu warned other members of the union planning to foment trouble at motor parks to have a rethink, saying the security operatives would deal decisively with erring members. He said that NURTW had been proscribed in the state and warned that they should steer clear of motor parks.

Nkanga blames Nigeria’s poor development on injustice Isaac Job, Uyo
A former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom state, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga has blamed poor development in the country despite its rich human and natural resources on injustice. Speaking in an interview in Uyo, Nkanga decried a situation where people from Niger Delta states who have contributed so much to the economy of the country continue to suffer neglect and marginalisation. He wondered why the money paid by oil companies as penalty for gas flaring should be shared across all the states of the federation whereas only oil producing areas actually suffer dangerous environmental and health hazards arising from gas flaring. “The problem is when we sit down as Nigerians, do we wonder why we are not making progress. God has endowed
us with human and natural resources but if we continue to build the country on injustice, progress and development will be elusive. “The oil companies have been paying penalty to the federal government for flaring gas but federal government will take that money and share it the way they are sharing the oil money. Meanwhile, everyday it is reported that people are going blind, and dying in the oil producing areas. “As the person that is out there in Ibeno or Warri is going blind because of gas flaring, is the person in Zamfara or Kaduna going blind too because of gas flaring? So these are the issues that annoy the people of this region. “It is gas flare and other environmental issues as a result of oil exploration that are causing blindness and deaths in the region, yet they are playing with it,” he stated. Nkanga, who is the National Chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum,
(PANDEF), expressed disappointment that President Buhari’s government failed the people of the region by not implementing even one of the 16-point which the forum presented to it 4years ago during the negotiations to stop agitations in the Niger Delta region. He said the stakeholders played their part by ensuring that destruction and bombing of oil installations was stopped in the overall interest of the country, believing that Federal government would keep to its promise of looking into the issues affecting the region captured in the 16points. According to him, it was initially agreed that there will be continuous dialogue on the 16-point agenda and reminded the federal government of the negotiations with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo for oil companies to relocate their headquarters to Niger Delta states where they operates, but such arrangement never yielded expected result.

Rights activist seeks impeachment of Anambra governor for alleged gross misconduct Human Right activist, Mr. KeneChukwu Okeke, has instituted a legal action to compel the Anambra State House of Assembly to initiate an impeachment proceeding against the state governor Willie Obiano for alleged gross misconduct. Okeke in a motion on notice marked A/606M/2019, brought before Justice Chukwudi Charles Okaa of the Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka, Monday; seeking to compel the Anambra State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Obiano for allegedly, “grossly misconducting himself in a manner that breached the express provisions of Sections 121 & 124 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended).” However, reacting to the development, the Anambra State House of Assembly denied that there was such attempt to impeach Governor Willie Obiano over alleged refusal to grant autonomy to the state judiciary. The rights activist had six months ago, in the Suit marked A/462/2018 sued the governor
and the House of Assembly on the need to implement the financial autonomy clause guaranteed for the Judiciary and Legislature (co-ordinate arms of government) vide Section 121 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended), citing alleged constitutional breaches by the Governor and the House of Assembly. He further threatened to compel the House of Assembly to commence an impeachment proceeding against the governor, should the lawmakers fail to act accordingly. In the motion on notice, the rights activist further contends that in flagrant violation of the 1999 constitution, Governor Willie Obiano laid the Anambra State 2019 Appropriation Bill which contains the budgetary estimates of the Judiciary and Legislature (as prepared by the Executive Governor) before the House of Assembly and the subsequent release to the legislative and judicial arms in quarterly tranches, by the executive arm, the amounts standing to the credit of the

Judiciary and the Legislature which is therefore illegal and unconstitutional. It was submitted therefore, that the proper procedure is for the Judiciary and the Legislature to prepare their independent budgets or estimates, and any amount standing to the credit of the Judiciary is charged upon the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the State i.e. statutorily transfer to the heads of the Courts, and that of the Legislature will stand transferred to the account of the House of Assembly. It was also alleged that Governor Obiano in abusing section 120 (2), (3) of the 1999 Constitution, started spending from the public tills without a valid appropriation bill properly laid before the House of Assembly in accordance with the Constitution which is the governing laws, the rights activist now approached the court seeking an order to compel the House of Assembly to begin the impeachment process, the House of Assembly having turned a blind eye to the illegality being perpetuated by the Executive Governor amidst the former’s refusal to impeach Governor Obiano based on the alleged constitutional infractions. The pending applications in the suit, are further praying the Court for “an order striking down the Anambra State 2019 Appropriation Bill for being illegal and inconsistent with the express provisions of Sections 121 & 124 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (amended).” The Governor of Anambra State was further accused of treating the orders of the court with a great disdain and abusing the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at will, particularly from the angle of the observance of the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as contained under Chapter II of the Constitution.

The South East region deserves to be offered the Deputy Senate presidency with Senator Dr. Orji Kalu as the man to beat, if merit is the yardstick for the measurement under the present progressives’ dispensation,” the release said.
The group described Kalu as a God-fearing politician, “a man of honesty, well educated and highly disciplined, an astute politician who is tested and trusted and has demonstrated capability for good leadership as he presided over the affairs of Abia State as governor from 1999 -2007 without blemish or blame. “Enugu States had the opportunity of producing the Deputy Senate President from 2007 to date with Senator Ike Ekweremadu. “Now that APC has zoned the Deputy Senate President to the South East, nobody deserves it than Senator Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.”

As Iliyasu Adamu woke up to the news that the first sliver of the new moon had been sighted the night before, he felt a sense of optimism that he had not felt in a very long time. There was no doubt in his mind that this Eid ul-Fitr would be like no other. And as he continued to get ready to celebrate the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan with communal prayers in his Mosque and various festivities with his family, his mind was focused on the one duty that he was determined to fulfill by the end of the day… Burgundy was Iliyasu’s favourite color; he had always wanted to wear a burgundy Sallah outfit. But it was not a color that was traditionally used to sew Babbar Riga with; men usually wore neutral, plain or pastel colored Babbar Rigas. It had always been a mystery to Iliyasu why his community frowned at the thought of men sewing colorful traditional attire. After all, it seemed to be alright for men to wear bold colored shirts and jackets in Western attire and women were widely accepted and encouraged to wear colorful traditional clothes. About four years ago, on a trip to the market to buy scandals for his two children, Iliyasu’s eye caught sight of the most beautifully burgundy colored material he had ever seen. Instantly, it was love at first sight for Iliyasu. So deep and instant was that love, that Iliyasu refused to let any thought that he would never have the courage or opportunity to wear this special material dissuade him from purchasing it. As soon as he left the market with his scandals and material in his undersized black polythene bag, Iliyasu went straight to his tailor with the instruction for the tailor to sew a special Babbar Riga with the most artistic yellow embroidery. And what a job the tailor did because two weeks later, when Iliyasu went to pick up his garment, the contrast of the intricately woven yellow embroidery against the burgundy almost took his breath away. Rushing home, he laid the treasure on his bed, tilted his head and took some time to marvel at the beauty; then he carefully hung it in his closet. Since picking up the finished garment from the tailor all those years ago, Iliyasu had brought it home and put it at the back of his cupboard where it did nothing but collect dust and smell of mothballs. He had never had the courage to wear it in public. That was until this Sallah when Iliyasu bought the burgundy masterpiece out, dusted it off and asked the washer man to wash it with extra strong starch and to iron it very straight. As Iliyasu put on his work
of genius, which still smelled of mothballs and struggled to move in the over-starched burgundy regalia, he felt a sense of pride and contentment to be wearing a garment that reflected the optimism and brightness that he felt within himself. This was a special Eid; in fact, the most special Iliyasu would ever mark and as he and his outfit jerkily and stiffly proceeded to the Mosque for the Eid prayer to thank Allah for the help and strength given to him throughout the previous month, his mind went to the other important task he had promised himself he would fulfill today… Ramadan, the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from break of dawn to sunset, was usually a spiritually fulfilling but difficult period for Iliyasu. While he was satisfied with the inner peace he felt when he prayed and beseeched God for forgiveness and mercy during Ramadan, the abstention from food was really a great challenge for a ‘tuwo’ and ‘fura’ loving Iliyasu. He loved food almost more than anything else in his life and the humungous size of Iliyasu’s stomach exposed his secret habit of stuffing 6 servings of tuwo and 10 cups of fura in one meal. Usually Eid was a period that Iliyasu used to ‘gormandize’ to make up for lost food during the month of Ramadan. This Eid would be no different. In the past Iliyasu had dedicated his prayers during Ramadan to seeking God’s intervention in the welfare of himself and his immediate family, but this year was a little different for him. Due to certain events Iliyasu had experienced within the last 18 months, this year, he went into his Ramadan prayer, first of all, to be in complete devotion to Allah but secondly he went into his worship with a different need and desire from previous years. For Iliyasu, this Ramadan was not just an abstention from food and drink, neither was it about praying for the welfare of his family. Rather, it was an exercise in patience, understanding and discipline; an exercise in which he needed to search his soul and learn what the true message of Ramadan represents in his life. Iliyasu lived a relatively satisfactory life. He had a patient and accommodating wife who devoted herself to their family, two children who were obedient and respectful and a job where he earned enough to comfortably support his family. He was somewhat an eccentric character and had never been a particularly sociable person. Often people referred to him as awkward. But
even with that awkwardness, Iliyasu had mostly kept himself out of other people’s business, preferring to go to the riverbank and watch the flow of the water in his spare time. He would do that for hours and every day after leaving work, he would go to a river bank that was not too far from his workplace to sit alone amidst the tranquility and watch the water flow. But there was an inner feeling that Iliyasu nursed which, up until 18 months ago, he never let anyone know. Iliyasu had an innate and vicious hatred for anyone that practiced a religion that was not Islam. By the time Iliyasu realized that he nursed these deep feelings, he had tried to dismiss them because he worked with non-Muslims in his office. But over time, from one sectarian skirmish to another in his state, that hatred had grown into a severe loathing. From Iliyasu’s point of view, Muslims in his community were constantly accused, persecuted and targeted. The situation, in his mind, became worse because every time there was a sectarian and religious conflict, the media immediately put out a report saying that it was the Muslim community, which had launched the attack. This angered Iliyasu because he didn’t see the actions of the Muslims as an unprovoked attack but as retaliation for an earlier attack or injustice that was done to the Muslim community. All Iliyasu wanted to see was the end of non-Muslims in his community; he had a thirst and desire for this. For over 13 years, Iliyasu had lived with his family in the same house. He loved where he lived because it had all the amenities that his family needed and it had a small garden in the back where Iliyasu grew carrots. But the one negative of living in the house for Iliyasu, was living next to his neighbor, Cletus. Cletus Samson and his family had moved into the house next-door approximately 5 months after Iliyasu. In the 12 and half years that they were neighbors, the two men had barely spoken to each other. There seemed to be silent understanding of hatred between born-again Christian Cletus and devoutly Islamic Iliyasu. Each looked at the other with suspicion and contempt. Each believed they were defending, protecting, representing and doing right by their religion. Their wives were not allowed to speak to one another and their children, who happened to be the same age, were not allowed to play together. Often, the two grown men would do little things around their compounds such as throw dirt towards one another’s house to anger the other or block each other’s cars in the main driveway.
U20WC: Flying Eagles technical crew may face probe Flying Eagles coaching crew may face massive probe if the Nigeria football Federation (NFF) is to listen to calls from disappointed fans and stakeholders following the dismal outing of the team in Poland. The Paul Aigbogun led side raised the hopes of many in the country following their 4-0 demolition of Qatar in the opening match but took a nose dive afterwards managing to crawl into the knock out stage before bowing out after a 2-0 defeat by African brothers Senegal on Monday. Disappointed Nigerian fans have lampooned the team with some describing them as the worst team ever to be paraded by the country in the U-20 category. As if the dismal outing was not embarrassing enough, allegation of bribery is reportedly being made by some players who claimed that they were dropped because they could not raise N5million allegedly being demanded by the technical crew. The technical crew will no doubt be looking forward to having an opportunity to clear the air on such allegation and perhaps explain to the nation why the team turned into a toothless bulldog after the first match. A member of the 1996 Olympic Gold
medallist Emmanuel Babayaro did not hesitate in joining the league of those calling for probe into the Poland outing. He noted that the team from outset showed a lack of commitment and desire to win in the championship. The youth championship he further reasoned is very important as it provides the necessary feed for the under 23 team and the Super eagles respectively and as such should not be operating below par. “The technical team are not up to speed technically. It baffled me that we will be going for a World Cup without our best legs, it is a shame. “If we play well with the youngsters and we are eliminated in the group stage it’s cool, it is developmental. We need to go for the right lads for our own future. “The NFF should do the needful. Do proper investigation into what happened with the Flying Eagles,“ he told Goal.com Five countries Columbia, Ukraine, Italy, Ecuador and Senegal have already hit the quarterfinals. Should Mali fail in their bid to progress Tuesday against Argentina, only Senegal will fly African flag in the quarterfinal fixtures scheduled for Friday and Saturday respectively.
