‘TIS THE QUESTION: ‘WHO’S THE BOSS’ By Alicia David

Daily Titan Staff Writer

In the middle of the 1980s between side ponytails and leg warmers was a television show that blended family and comedy to give us the right mix of entertainment. “Who’s the Boss?,” which got its start in 1984, was a popular sitcom that showed us not all households are run the same. Tony Micelli, played by Tony Danza, was a widower who wanted to raise his daughter Samantha in a different state and leave the fast-paced New

York lifestyle behind. The Brooklyn pair packed up their blue van and headed off to a small town in Connecticut where Tony searched for a job as a housekeeper. He showed up on the doorstep of Angela Bower, a divorced, prim and proper advertising executive, who was a little reluctant to hire a male housekeeper. After the urging of her mancrazy mother Mona, Angela decided to hire Tony. She hoped that he might also be a good male role model for her shy, soft-spoken son, Jonathan. Tony, an easy-going former baseball player, and Samantha

Mona, the fun-loving redhead, lived in a separate area above the garage. This living arrangement made it easy for her to frequently come and go as she pleased through the kitchen in the main house. She would Photo provided by nostalgiacentral.com sneak in to add were the exact opposite of her wisecrack comments before the overly-stressed Angela quickly being kicked out by and Jonathan, but the oppo- Angela. missing, while Angela acted as a motherly figure to Samantha. In the eighth and final season of the show, everyone started to go their separate ways. Samantha became more lady-like and after attracting the attention of many guys, eventually got married. Jonathan slowly broke out of his shell. And Although Tony and Angela became close to marriage with their constant flirting back and forth and love/hate relationship, they never did tie the knot. The show may not have had a traditional household setting, but it did show us the importance of bonding together to get through everyday struggles. For those of us who just can’t get enough of this light-hearted family comedy, the first season DVD has been released and re-runs of the show are often shown on Nick at Nite.

15 MINUTES WITH AN ARTIST By Kirk Dingley

A: I love my job. I get to teach art to kids. It’s the best job ever. I get so much out of it.

Pop artists Jasper Johns once said, “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.” This holds especially true for Cal State Fullerton student Miranda Madrano. The 24-year-old has truly made art her being. She is now just a few units away from receiving a degree in illustration, and she spends most afternoons teaching children the art of painting and drawing. We spoke outside the new campus performing arts center about a variety of topics, including her favorite daily activity: Breakfast!

Q: How old are the kids, and isn’t it always dangerous anytime you put paint in the same room with kids?

Daily Titan Staff Writer

Q: As a child, were you a natural artist? A: I used to draw a lot. I remember every time my mother bought a new Disney movie, I would draw the cover. I used to draw the Beauty and the Beast cover over and over. Q: So do you have to be born with some sort of natural ability to be a good artist or can someone who has no artistic ability be taught? A: Well, I don’t consider myself a natural artist. I just had a strong desire to do it. I wanted to get good. Plus, I’ve always really enjoyed drawing. So I think you

A: The ages range from 4 to 16- and no, I’ve never had to deal with any major paint disasters surprisingly. There was one time when one of the kids decided to start painting on the walls, but that wasn’t too bad. Other then that though, the classroom stays pretty neat. By Kirk Dingley/ Daily Titan Staff

Illustration major Miranda Madrano uses her laptop to draw her artwork . have to have a strong desire to become a good artist. Q: Who’s your favorite actor? A: Umm, that’s a tough question. I guess I would have to say Angelina Jolie, because she’s hot, and Charlize Thereon because she plays different types of roles. Q: What do you see yourself doing after you graduate? A: There are a lot of things I would like to do. I would like to get into storyboarding for movies. I’ve always had interest in doing greeting card illustration, and I would love to draw for

children’s books. Q: So it’s Sunday, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and you just woke-up. Describe what your day is like. A: I love eating breakfast in the morning. It’s one of my favorite things to do. Then after that, just whatever happens. I like to relax. Q: So it’s a beautiful day out, and your only goal is to scramble some eggs! A: Yes, pretty much. Q: Do you enjoy your job?

Q: What’s the most difficult part of teaching kids how to paint? A: Communicating to them on their level. I have to take everything I learn from my art teachers in college, and try to explain to them in a way that they can understand. It’s actually really difficult. Q: Are there any baby Picassos in the class? A: Some kids are really good and some kids are really horrible. [Laughing] I hate saying that, but some kids just get so frustrated! But, they all improve with time. Q: So do you want to go get an omelet? A: Sure, let’s go.

TEDDY THOMPSON DELIVERS SADNESS By Jamie Quarles Daily Titan Staff Writer

Sadness is like a shadow that lingers and darkens the soul. Singer/songwriter/producer Teddy Thompson seems to know this emotion well. In his new CD, “Separate Ways,” released February 21, he sings about lost loves, bitterness, even depression. Every song of Thompson’s echoes some type of struggle. Optimism is virtually non-existent. There aren’t many upbeat

songs on this moody album. In one song, “I Should Get Up,” the music is upbeat but the lyrics and undertones of the song are depressing. Thompson laments, “The world goes on without me/ I know it/ I know it/ No one misses the quiet kid ... ” Still, many of Thompson’s lyrics are refreshing. It is like a taste of reality when he sings about a love that cannot be saved. Thompson’s voice is nice, but many of his songs sound similar. There are no vocal surprises, which makes the songs boring. His songs “I Wish It Was Over” and “Separate Ways” sound alike. Also, a lot of the lyrics are repetitive. The most impressive songs

“...Not all who love are blind/ Some of us are just too kind/ We forgive to much” TEDDY THOMPSON

on the album are “Separate Ways” and “Shine So Bright.” These songs are memorable. “Shine So Bright” is easy to follow and catchy. The lyrics are emotional, but not so expressive that you’d want to pull out your hair. The song “Separate Ways,” has the best musicality all around. Thompson’s vocals are strong and the guitar, bass and

keyboards bring emotion to the song. Also, the lyrics are the best. They are truthful and have the ability to leave the listeners thinking about their own lives. He sings, “And not all who love are blind/ some of us are just too kind/ we forgive too much/ and never speak our minds ... ” Thompson also produced a couple of original songs including the song “I Wish It Was Over.” In it, he wishes for the demise of his current relationship. Though humorous, the song sounds intentionally cruel. Overall, the best feature of the album is the lyrics, which remain ever truthful and relatable to all who listen.

Reese Witherspoon (L) is nominated for Best Actress. Joaquin Phoenix (R) is nominated for Best Actor. Both for their roles in “Walk The Line.”

The 78th annual Academy Awards are finally upon us, and to no surprise, “Brokeback Mountain” leads the pack with eight nominations. “Brokeback” will probably not sweep the categories, but will definitely take home the Best Picture prize, since it is the extra heavy favorite. The film has already won almost every major critical award this year, including the Golden Globe. There is no chance that “Brokeback” will lose – you can just feel it in the air. The remainder of the nominees, “Crash,” “Capote,” “Munich” and “Good Night, and Good Luck,” are every bit worthy of Oscars themselves, but will all have to be satisfied with bridesmaid duty at this year’s ceremony. Other winners in the major categories are not so hard to predict this year either. Director Ang Lee, who was also nominated in 2000 for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” will surely take home his first Oscar for his outstanding work on “Brokeback.”

There are some outstanding performances in the Best Actor category as well, like Heath Ledger’s exceptional portrayal of a confused cowboy caught between two worlds, and Terrence Howard’s

critically acclaimed interpretation of a man who gives up everything to achieve his dream of becoming a rap star in “Hustle & Flow.” Joaquin Phoenix is also in the running with his brilliant, subdued imitation of the late great Johnny Cash, as well as David Strathairn, who plays Edward R. Murrow in “Good Night, and Good Luck.” The winner hands down will be Philip Seymour Hoffman however. His poignant portrayal of Truman Capote has had critics raving since the film opened, predicting without a doubt that Hoffman will take home the gold statue.

The front-runner in the Best Actress category is Reese Witherspoon, for her charming portrayal of the late great June Carter Cash Felicity Huffman is only a slight threat to Witherspoon for her transformation into a member of the opposite sex in “Transamerica.” The Best Supporting Actor race is between Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man) and George Clooney (Syriana). Academy members are more than likely going to honor Giamatti though, for he has been such an outstanding character actor through the years. The Best Supporting Actress Oscar will likely go to Rachel Weisz for her role in “The Constant Gardener.” Amy Adams, Katherine Keener, Michelle Williams and Frances McDormand are also up for the award, but Weisz is solidly in the lead with numerous awards already under her belt this year. The surprise element may be absent from the awards this year, but the Oscars are still always entertaining to watch – especially with Jon Stewart as this year’s host. So make sure you tune in to ABC this Sunday to watch the event unfold.

MADEA PROVES LOVE HEALS BROKEN HEARTS By Jessica Escorsia Daily Titan Staff Writer

An abusive relationship, a money-hungry mother, trouble with love and a teenage runaway, All of these are just a few of the underlying themes in Tyler Perry’s No. 1 box office hit, “Madea’s Family Reunion.” Adapted from Perry’s successful stage play of the same name, Mabel “Madea” Simmons (Tyler Perry), the pistol-packing mama, is back to reunite her family that has not had a reunion in five years. Madea, who always finds herself in trouble wit the law, is sentenced to take in a rebellious teenage runaway. Her lessons in tough-love and old-fashioned spankings, which Madea does not hesitate to do and are quite entertaining, helps develop the runaway into a well-behaved and respectable young lady. While Madea learns to cope with raising another teenager, the audience is taken on a rollercoaster of emotions with the heart warming love stories of her nieces Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) and her half sister

Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson). Lisa is engaged to handsome and wealthy Carlos (Blair Underwood) who seems to give her everything from flowers and jewelry to beatings and bruises. Carlos, a successful investment

banker, uses Lisa as a ploy to get what he wants from her moneyhungry bourgeoise mother Victoria (Lynn Whitefield). While Lisa is enduring beatings, her mother is too caught up on maintaining her status at the top of the social ladder that she doesn’t

seem to care much about what her daughter has to put up with for wealth and success. Meanwhile Victoria’s estranged eldest Vanessa, a poor single mother of two, struggles to learn how to trust and love men because of a shocking experience from her

childhood. Throughout the entire movie we cut from scene to scene between both the entertaining storyline with Madea and the difficulties of the teetering relationship with between the two sisters and their mother. But finally at the reunion everyone comes together and the secrets and lies come out for all to see. The whole family gets a lesson in life, love and the importance of a family sticking together from their great-aunts Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou, who give uplifting and poetic words to a much needed Lisa who seeks help at the reunion. “Madea’s Family Reunion” provides as much entertaining as you would expect from Tyler Perry. If all you want to see is Madea’s no-nonsense approach to life and how she speaks what’s on her mind, whenever she feels like it, it is best to save your money and wait to rent the movie. Madea’s on-screen time is not what you would expect because the more serious theme between the sisters takes on a stronger role in the movie.

THE MUSIC SCOOP PART TROIS By Jimmy Stroup Daily Titan Staff Writer

I have returned again in my quest to release you from the rampant commercialism that has throttled music and driven it from its real purpose: girls. That’s correct – the reason why music exists is to aid in getting laid (for those who make it, as well as those you use it). Fortunately, almost any music can help in attaining this goal. And these next five beauties might be what you ought to pick up and try out toward that end. (11) Nighthawks at the Diner by Tom Waits. I agonized over this pick. Because Waits is as diverse an artist as you’ll ever find, choosing one over others becomes a real hassle since he’s a musical chameleon and his albums reflect that. Mule Variations, for example, is really great. But I settled on Nighthawks because it’s accessible, and if you like this, you can move on to the

more complex. Sort of an homage to whisky and dive bars, this live double album is a nice mix of jazz tunes with Waits on vocals, piano and guitar (but only two at a time), and four other guys filling out the standard quintet. Especially good are “Better Off Without a Wife” and “Big Joe and Phantom 309,” a cover of the old Red Sovine ghost truck driver song (it’s OK – I know none of you know who Red Sovine is). (12) Aja by Steely Dan. This is my favorite band named after a dildo. Aw, it’s just one of my favorite bands period, name or no. I liked their early stuff, but I’m partial to the period in their career that Aja (pronounced Asia) came out of: just after they quit touring and before they quit altogether. And though reunited and again making music, I still think Aja’s my favorite. Some of you will recognize instantly the beats and rhythms taken out of several of these songs and “sampled” underneath some

popular R&B tunes of the last 15 years. Just remember that there’s a reason the R&B guys are ripping this off to make their crap better – because it’s totally killer. With

great funk, the jazz-rock on Aja combines the best in construction of very poignant and unforgettable tunes that stick with you long after you’re done listening. Best on the album: “Peg,” I think. It doesn’t hurt that Michael McDonald lends his considerable talent to the backing vocals throughout, either. (13) A Bigger Piece of Sky by Robert Earl Keen. Though not much a sing-

er, Keen’s best album is an excellent example of how great songwriting will compensate for other inadequacies. I admit that this is a country album; I think it’s the pedal steel that really gives it away. And the backbeat. And the fiddle. But forget all that, because this album is like crack. I keep it in the car at all times. “Jesse With the Long Hair Hanging Down” is as good a fast-paced ballad ever written, and “Paint the Town Beige” describes growing older in startlingly touching terms. “Daddy Had a Buick” is also a noteworthy tune, just because it’s so much fun. (14) The Commitments Soundtrack. I wouldn’t be recommending a soundtrack if it were the usual collection of lame movie tunes. Set in Dublin during the never-ending recession, The Commitments is a 1991 film about a rhythm and blues band made up entirely of white Irishmen (and women) – and they’re fantastic. The album’s a collection of soul covers the band per-

7

forms during the course of the film. “Dark End of the Street,” “Mustang Sally,” “Destination Anywhere”; they’re all there. And when I tell you that the guy who sings lead (Andrew Strong) was only 16 at the time, you’re going to call me a damn liar, but it’s true. (15) Graceland by Paul Simon. A staple of any complete musical collection, Simon brilliantly blends his folk style with South African influences to create a new standard for experimental fusion. The popular “You can Call Me Al” (some may remember the video featuring Chevy Chase – himself a musician in his own right) was a popular radio hit, but “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” and the title track “Graceland” have proved to be more lasting. “I Know What I Know” is my favorite track, but I could be argued out of it, since it’s all so good. That’s it for this week. Check back next Thursday as I line up five more albums for you t.o go buy.

ARTIC MONKEYS FACE FIERCE COMPETITION By Cindy Tullues

Daily Titan Staff Writer

Is it me or did the Arctic Monkeys appear out of nowhere? They might not be the next best thing in the music industry, but the British rockers’ hit single, “I bet you look good on the dance floor” has created a musical buzz in the indie rock community and are slowly creeping their way onto your radio! The monkeys walked away with several British music awards this year, proving they are worth listening to. After much hype from the British music press, the group released their first debut album titled “Whatever people say I am, that is what I’m not” across the nation on February 21. Catchy lyrics fueled by a rollercoaster of guitars and drums have transformed them from an unknown band into a No. 1 phenomenon in the United Kingdom, even daringly being compared to The Beatles.

But their music seems to be a mix between The White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand – also under the same record label. The only resemblance the Monkeys have to The Beatles is an unassuming British accent. The album is undoubtedly filled with a lot of young energy that drives the musical talents of 20year-old singer Alex Turner. Though he cannot be considered a musical poet, his relentless stories about women, clubs and fame is refreshingly amusing. But, most of their songs seem to be clones of one another and of all other indie bands. Despite their monotonous music, listeners will find themselves bobbing their heads and humming to “Dancing Shoes.” I do not doubt that the Arctic Monkeys will become sensations, but I fear that they will only become another face in the music industry. “Whatever people say I am, that is what I’m not” is a good start, but the competition is fierce.

HIDE LADY LUMPS WITH SPRING FASHION TRENDS By Lauren Padilla Daily Titan Staff Writer

The cold weather brought pretty coats, holidays, presents, snowboarding, wonderful comfort food and unfortunately for many some extra winter pounds. Now spring is steadily approaching and it’s time to lose the coats and show some skin. This can seem a little scary if one’s body is not yet up to “par.” So how can one sport the latest fashions while still maintaining the confidence that your body is in line with its oh so fabulous wardrobe? Now is the time to beat the winter bulge and revel in spring’s beauty. First off, start with revamping your lingerie. It’s not only made to make you look sexy, but also to enhance the

areas you love and the not-soloveable areas. If your beautiful booty got a little jiggly with all the holiday sweets, you might want to pick up some fuller briefs or boy-cut underwear, they will make your rear look just right under springs flimsy skirts and adorable sundresses. A six-pack is rather hard to maintain when it has been masked all winter by luxurious coats and sweaters. Springs feminine silhouette will be quick to remind anyone that their tummy might be lacking some firmness. It might sound a little grandmaish but a higher top control brief will turn one’s physique goddesslike under a body clinging spring dress. If you would rather skip the body armor, the very stylish empire dresses are perfect for

drawing attention away from a not so perfect waistline. If you are still feeling remnants of the winter chill, opt for some wide leg trousers paired with a soft feminine blouse. The wider trousers will pull the eyes away from the tummy, and make it look much smaller proportionally creating a beautiful overall balance. The wider cut also works wonders on disguising one’s thighs if that’s a problem area. If your arms feel a little flabby, especially after watching Madonna’s 40-year-Pilate-toned arms in her latest MTV video, a girly cardigan is your remedy. It will add a soft comforting touch to any of springs dresses or delicate ensembles and do the trick of making everyone forget that you don’t have the time to spend 23.5 hours of the day toning up like America’s Material Girl.

CHEAP FUN AT THE SANTA ANA ZOO By Jackie Kimmel Daily Titan Columnist

Since last week I told you all how to become movie star extras, I thought I would add something different to my activity list. This time I am offering a place where you can spend the day with a swamp wallaby or a mosquito fish. You are probably thinking that I have been shot too many times by a laser gun, but I am referring to spending a day at the Santa Ana Zoo. It is not surprising that visiting the zoo would not be anywhere in the top 50 things a college student could do. Yet, zoo attendance could be the missing link in the chain of usual entertainment ideas. The Santa Ana Zoo is first and foremost local, and those who live in the city of Santa Ana, get

in for free. A visit to the zoo can help in a homework assignment that requires you to write about something different or unique in your life. Zoos are always a hit when it comes to dating. The zoo is not the most romantic place, but could come in handy if your mate is scared of a certain animal, bird, or bug and clings to you for safety. Plus, the zoo is the perfect setting if you have children, baby-sit children, or have younger siblings to watch over. For those who truly enjoy the company of animals and have some spare time the zoo is always looking for volunteers, ranging from zoo ambassadors to assisting in special events. The Santa Ana zoo is $6 for adults, and children under 3 get in free.
