episode with that guy who thought he found “love at first sight” and his thinking that he had a connection with the girl on the other team was the most hilarious moment on reality TV thus far. I was laughing so hard and proceeded to rewind the part and watch it again. It was that funny. Speaking of shows, I couldn’t wait for the premiere of Heroes on

We only went on three rides until we got tired of it and sat down to people watch for the rest of the eight hours we were there. Anyhow, if you have anything to say, send me an email. This may be his last performance at Cal State Fullerton. Graduate student Zack Kraus is currently rehearsing for his thesis production in “The Sea Gull.” Although this is technically the last play he needs for his graduate degree, actors are given the option to audition for the following semester’s productions as well. Kraus has performed in several plays at CSUF as well as at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, where he earned a Bachelor of

Science degree in Theater and Psychology. Although he loves the interaction between performer and actor in live performances, Kraus hopes to try his hand at television and film. “I have never done it, and I would like to just try it,” he said. “I love the theater though, and I will always be doing it in some respect.” During his graduate program at CSUF, Kraus had the opportunity to teach a couple of acting for nonmajor classes. Although he hadn’t considered it before, he will keep teaching as an option for his career. “I really enjoyed doing it. It is

rewarding in a different way than acting,” he said. Kraus is looking forward to branching out and entering “the real world.” The main thing he worries about the feeling of being alone in Los Angeles. “It doesn’t matter how many people are in L.A. I hear it is really lonely. Here you receive good constructive criticism. There is really none of that out there. That is a big fright,” he said. Kraus looks forward to the different roles ahead of him. “Mostly, whatever play I am in, at the moment is my favorite play,” he said.

People dressed in dark black rush around the stage placing props and pulling curtains, while behind the scenes is a whirlwind of bobby pins, nylons and makeup. “The Sea Gull,” presented by Cal State Fullerton’s theater department, begins tomorrow night in the Young Theatre. Six graduate students, as well as four professional actors, spent five weeks rehearsing the play. Director Svetlana Efremova-Reed said rehearsals are “going well.” “It is hard going, and there are still elements that need to be put together, but it is good. I am very excited,” she said. “The Sea Gull,” written by Anton Chekhov, follows the story of a young writer in 19th-century Russia. Efremova-Reed, who is Russian herself, said she feels it is her duty to teach the audience and her students about the Russian culture. “I love to share my vision. I have a very specific vision, especially with this topic. My students did

a great job capturing the cultural differences. They brought their own experience into their performances,” she said. Efremova-Reed said the lovestory depicts the sacrifice that people make in their relationships to pursue and present their art. “It is about the artist suffering, naïve love you experience when you are young, betrayal and the importance of family. There is a whole lot to the story,” said graduate student Zack Kraus, who plays the young writer Konstantin. Efremova-Reed is not only directing “The Sea Gull,” she is acting in it as well. “That was the biggest mistake,” she said. “I have never acted and directed at the same time. That was the hardest duty. But I did have a stand-in so I could become detached to see how it looked.” Kraus said it was both rewarding and challenging to work alongside the professional actors. “You push and push and push yourself and grow, but when you work with people like this you learn what it takes to be a professional,” Kraus said. “The Sea Gull” will run until Oct. 15. Tickets are now available at the box office or through www. tickets.com.

They started out playing acoustic songs alongside fiddlers and mariachis on the street corners of Laguna Beach in the summer of 2005. The rockabilly trio Faraway Boys has since gradually risen from the street corners of Laguna Beach and made its way up to the club scene, playing in clubs from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Last Thursday, the band found itself in the college scene as it performed underneath a warm September sun at the Cal State Fullerton Becker Amphitheatre. For drummer Sean Walbrink, last Thursday marked his return to the amphitheater. “I saw a lot of great bands here when I was in high school,” Walbrink

said. “When At The Drive-In played here, it was one of my favorite moments when I was 18.” Faraway Boys’ vintage-sounding combination of rockabilly and modern rock ‘n’ roll brought a little something different to CSUF: a 6foot-tall upright bass that is rarely seen in modern rock bands. During the set, bassist Miguel Gonzalez displayed his showmanship by doing stunts on his upright bass such as standing on it, laying it down and sitting on it, and holding it like a guitar – all while shuffling his fingers across the neck and body as he provided the steady sound that the upright bass gives. “Lots of practice. Lots and lots of practice,” Gonzalez said of how he learned the tricks. Faraway Boys attracted a number of curious onlookers who were participating in Associated Students

Inc.’s Block Party event just outside the Titan Student Union and provided a soundtrack of sorts for the festivities by playing original songs such as “Sailor Jerry Rum” and cover songs of Elvis and Johnny Cash. Aside from Elvis and Johnny Cash, the band said that its main influences are rockabilly groups the Stray Cats and Reverend Horton Heat. “He’s got a classic sound to him, but he plays it mean, he plays the guitar real mean,” Faraway Boys singer/guitarist Scott Young said of The Reverend Horton Heat. “I really look up to him and his stuff.” The young band was well-received by the CSUF audience considering it has yet to release a record and people don’t really know what they are hearing, Walbrink said. “You can’t really expect a big crowd, so that’s why we work extra hard,” he said. “Eventually when you come around a second time, you hope more people show up.”

Performing live is something the band enjoys very much, regardless if they’re playing for a packed club or in front of three or four people, Young said.

“It’s overwhelming, it really is,” Gonzalez said.

If Jackass Number Two is your first experience with the Jackass franchise, you should pass. If you’re a fan of the series, however, the first film, and the Steve-O videos, however, this movie is right up your alley. Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Chris Pointius and Wee Man push more toward the raunchiness of the Steve-O videos and away from the stunts. Though there still are plenty of stunts, the guys of Jackass jump the line of decency at times, particularly when Chris Pontius ingests some questionably unethical animal byproducts. At the start, the boys do a take on running of the bulls through a Midwestern town with trampling and plenty of destruction. The film’s end is a musical number featuring many extras and stunts to keep audiences entertained until Rip Taylor appears to announce the show is over. Some of the stunts in between include a puppetry of the penis inside a snake cage, fishing for sharks with Steve-O as the bait, bees being placed into a limo that is locked, “milking” a male horse, a fart mask and a fake terrorist getting into a taxi. Knoxville, who was supposed to have made the transition into

legitimate acting, performs a full compliment of stunts and proves that he has not forgotten where he came from. Margera dresses his friend Preston Lacy up as his father and puts him into bed with his mother. He then tells Preston “don’t be afraid to get frisky.” If you love the previous Jackass adventures, then you will not leave disappointed. If you’re grossed out by ingesting disgusting things, go find a Julia Roberts movie

Minutes with Two

Jackasses

By Rachel Douglass and Sheena Desai Daily Titan Staff Writers TheBuzz@dailytitan.com

As Jackass Number Two hits the theatres Chris Pontius lends a couple minutes out of his busy schedule… Daily Titan Buzz: What’s your role in the upcoming Jackass movie? Chris Pontius: Well anything that involves a penis, that’s me. DTB: How did the nudity thing start for you? Pontius: Everything is funnier when you do it naked. I had this thong that my friend bought and I

brought it to the first Jackass shoot. I just put it on, and it became what it is today. DTB: So when you were a kid you probably didn’t think you would be doing what you do today, so what was your childhood dream? Pontius: I wanted to play with animals. I wanted to be a jungle man! DTB: Off camera are you the same? Pontius: I’m not acting. We are pretty silly most of the time. DTB: Do you consider yourself an actor?

A Perfect Intro to Smooth Jazz By Paul Saiedi

Daily Titan Staff Writer TheBuzz@dailytitan.com

You may see visions of elegant women in impossibly tailored gowns gliding on polished wooden floors in the arms of powerful men when listening to Diana Krall’s new album, “From This Moment On.” The music seems to flow out of a songbird’s mouth as she cries her heart out cradling an antique microphone. Krall’s voice transports listeners to another time and place.

Much like her other albums, her newest release delivers precise melodic magic in the form of smooth piano play and velvet vocal styling. Perhaps Krall’s biggest success was her ability to tackle familiar standards and come across in a distinct, hypnotic tone. In the last two years, multiple music artists like Michael Bolton and Rod Stewart have attempted to resurrect old favorites in compilation albums with little or no success. What they fail to do, and what Krall does so well, is connect with the music and make it feel both old and contemporary. The album plays as the perfect background to quiet nights at home typing those late-night papers or to

romantic first dates. Most of the music sounds like a cross between Nina Simone and Norah Jones. Her rendition of “Exactly Like You” finds the perfect balance between soft piano play and lyrics. In a world where we carry our phones in our pockets and download movies to iPods, an album like “From This Moment On” supplies a refreshing break from the rat-race. This newest album makes No. 12 for Krall and is a great intro for first-time jazz vocal listeners while also satisfying the more demanding connoisseur’s appetite.

Pontius: I consider myself an entertainer. We don’t read lines… it’s like Steve-O [Stephen Glover] calls it, physical comedy. DTB: What were you doing before Jackass, and how did it start? Pontius: I’d been writing for different skate magazines since I was 17. We started goofing around and skating and [Jackass] just sort of happened. DTB: How did you end up the go-to penis guy? Pontius: I have a sweet pecker. It’s the sweetest in the group. I put it next to a snake. It tried to eat my

penis! When the Daily Titan spoke to Jason Acuna, aka Wee Man, he said he’s not sure on the sweetest pecker, but he does know of the smallest. DTB: We spoke with Chris, and he said that his pecker is better than anyone else’s. Wee-Man: I can for sure as hell tell you who’s is the smallest. It’s gotta be Ryan Dunn. That dude has definitely got the smallest pecker out of all of us. DTB: What are we going to see that is different from the previous Jackass movie? WM: The new thing in this one will be that Preston Lacy and I became stuntmen. We have performed all of our stunts DTB: Why do you think the majority of your audience is made up of college students? WM: Well, look at us. We are all a bunch of fraternity-looking guys. With a bunch of hot dudes on screen, college girls no doubt drool over us. DTB: What should everyone know before seeing Jackass 2? WM: Yeah. Everybody should expect to lose 15 lbs because you will be laughing so hard.

Underground, Flogging Molly are not just any sort of root, they are the potato – pleasing to many, satisfying and versatile, the band puts a particularly Irish flavor on your plate. After four studio albums, Warped Tours and many a drunken nights, the band has embarked on a college tour. No, they won’t be playing at this college, but the band will play locally at the Bren Events Center on the UCI campus. When asked why college students should attend, the band’s mandolin player, Bob Schmidt, said, “I dare them to come out to our show. If you wanna come out and hang out with people who don’t want to beat you down or make you feel miserable, [...] then you should. Just celebrate with us, you will not be disappointed. To read more of what Schmidt said and to find out how the show went, check out The Buzz next Thursday in the Daily Titan.

The setting is Las Vegas. Enough said. There are so many students with crazy and unbelievable stories taking place in Sin City, anyone can write a book about it. And that’s just what Rita Rudner did. Rudner, an acclaimed comedian in Las Vegas, stirs up conflict and vengeance, with a hint of sarcasm and humor in her third book, “Turning The Tables.” Rudner dedicates her book to her dog Bonkers “for sitting under the desk and never having any opinions” before setting up readers for a story that will keep them entertained. Allie Bowen, a 26-year-old vice president of public relations for one of the Strip’s most renowned resorts, Heaven, is accused of forgery

suits and manicured hands, is called in for questioning. As the entertainment director of Heaven and ex-boyfriend of Bowen, he is entrusted to speak on behalf of Bowen’s actions. Both Sacco and Bowen’s boss meet her for questioning, but when asked why she did it, Bowen confidently answered that Sacco had told her to. As soon as she says this, Sacco denies the accusation in disbelief, and it is then that Bowen realizes that she was conned by her horny, primped ex-boyfriend. Rudner cleverly uses her comedic expertise to write a book about an independent woman, divorced from a lousy magician with no future plans, wrongly accused for a crime that her ex-boyfriend set her up for and working hard to outshine her escort service business, where they advertise celebrity look-a-likes.

Sara Danner, marketing manager for the Titan Student Union, said the block party is an annual event highlighting the programs and services offered to students. “It’s really an event that attracts a lot of attention because we offer a lot of fun, events, and promotions,” Danner said.
