Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2019 Daimeng WANG

(852552) Junhan Foong+ Studio 07

Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

According to the Zeara-polo, sighs are classifed as simbol, icons and indexes ,whcih is regarded as a kind of tool to representate specific object/concept. but the diagram is more elaborate, used in express architecture form can predict the condition which are hard to visualise and can describe space. It dose not play a representational role for physical object.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Plan: started at tracing the contour lines to determine the position of the pavilion and the lawn. Then trace the pavilion outline to determine the size of it. PLAN VIEW Elevation: measured the height of the lawn and pavilion. Rised up the contour and then shaped them as mound by”PATCH”. And also proviede the thickness of the main structure by

“2018: Carme Pinós”. 2019. Mpavilion. http://mpavilion.org/ architect/2018-carme-pinos/. ELEVATION The process during constructing the Mpavilion met several challenges. The plan drawing is easy to posion the pavilion but the elevation and section drawing was hard to read properly due to the different angles of its shape. It was confusing about how to determine the correct dimention of each component beacuse there still was a distence between the elevation lines and the paviliion itself. And the methods of connecting two floating planes were multiple but mirror one of them to duplicte another is the eastest one for me. “ROTATING “helped a lot when connecting individual part together,

“EXTRUDECRV“.

PERSPECTIVE - NORTH-WEST

3

Perspective: traced the structure lines of the roofing, consider the direction of the timber and the connection with joists and beams. Then combined the different layers as the roofing, angled the two floating planes.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

In Herzberger ‘s concept, design should not be focus on specific purpose, it should be used for mutilple functions. As well as in Architecture, it is supposed not to be limited in one particular utility. Thus, when designing architecture, the architects should also consider about the accomadation potential, to maximise the utility of space. The Mpavilion designbackground is to establish the relationship between human and nature, provide a harmonize environment to the city. Its structure provide shadows and rainwater shelter for people to gathering together. But the floated plane towardes to different direction and its topography is sloped, provide the the potential for people to seat along the slop of mounds. The vertical timber support and the bench do not defined which area must used for having rest, but just give a guide for them to sit and chatting with others.

Week Two

Isometric

Carme Pinos Mpavilion During modelling the Mpavilion, firstly it was established in Rhino and then detailed the lineweight and the shadow in Adobe illustrator. Choosing this South-east angle can show more information not only the volume of the pavilion but also the cellar under the mound. The only shortcoming of this view is it hide the gutter that collecting rainwater. The structure consists of four layers component. A layer of polycarbonate that using as waterproofing; a layer of purling connected with beams as the main structure; and also two layers of timber roofing on both sides to make the whole structure more stable. There are different directions of the timber frame so I carefully tracing the planview-lines to make sure the direction is correct, and the distance between each single timber batten is same.Array command helped me a lot. The thesis of this Mpavilion is to establish a relationship between human and nature, provide a a harmonious environment within this city. The direction the roofing towards is provide a response to the city center, and also follow the human-made mounds’s shape to communicate with each other.

In make 2d, change the linewidth to further detailed the representation. The thickest line was used in the outline of the pavilion, not only for represent the steel frame but also to distinguish the pavilion and the landscape. And also as the distance close to us, as the lineweight thicker. I also emphasize the junction the two plane connect together to help people better understand the structure. I used thinner line in gutter and timber batten, which are intensive and further away from our view. The contour is very thin beacause it just represent the height of the mound, does not have real thickness.

5

When consider about the circulation and threshold, I think the main factor to define threshold. Two layers of different arrangement of the timber battens provide fragmented and grid shaow, which also can follow the solar path to change the angle and direction to the ground. It help people consider where is the relative privacy space like under the shadow of the pavillion. And sitting on the third floor of the benches is privacy due to the high position, Leaning on the timber support also can provide people a sence of security. The circulation of this area main from the North east and South east beacause the entrance is close to the path of the park. People seat on the bench ,but not alwasy under the shadow but also want to seat at the space between drak and bright area. which can provide a good view for sightseeing,

CIRCULATION

THRESHOLD

There are many factors influence the circulation. The pavilion is on one open space therefore there were 3 or 4 entrance can pass throught the area. people stay under the pavilion can enjoy the shadow also can take shelter from the rain so the shadow area like underthe pointed roofing area would be more density. Morning there are less people than noon and afternoon, which are the time elders and children prefer to hang out at the park. Sometimes, there are some peopel just have a look the structure but not occupy this area, also include stuff just go through the basement to work.

6

There isn’t specific public are and privacy area can be defined, but the space under the timber support can provide semi-privacy feeling to people who leaning on it, and also the third floor area bench which is the highest seat. The only privact space is the service basement that under the mound. The structure of roofing is made of steel, timber and polycarbonate, which are stable and can provide a sense of secuity and safety for people.

Appendix

Process

choose [top view]to trace the contour of the mound.

trace the four different layers. use the same outline to make sure the shape is always the same. trace one timber batten, then extrudecrv one, and use[array] to arrange a line of batten.

use elevation to define the dimention of each component.

7

Appendix Process

use [Patch] to give the mound a volume.

move the four layers and layed out togather.

add the exterior I beam to make the whole roof complete. and add a gutter

8

Appendix

Process

angle one roof 10 degree. and then rotate the roof plane to 180 degree in x-plane.

there were some intersection, can use solidpton to adjust it.

9

Appendix Process

as the roofing, connect the timber batten and sturcture together.

follow the contour line to draw the track of the brick to shape the first layer bench. extrude one sigle brick

still use [Array],thedistance should around 200mm.

10

Appendix

Process

using [split] to cut off the curved surface, and [trim] to cut the the basement wall to the shape you want.

make 2d the model and then inser it in AI, to change the linewidth.
