Happy New Year to you and yours!
CHELSEA HANSELMAN
This time last year, I set several goals for the association and myself. Part of each New Year is looking back over the past year to see all that was accomplished and areas that could be improved upon. I also think it is important to set new goals.
JUNIORS
I made it a goal to attend at least one event in every county. While I wasn’t able to get to as many events as I wanted, I was grateful clubs were able to provide in-person events for their members. The association was able to host in-person contests for the Juniors in Corning so that New York could be represented at National Convention (and did I mention, New York WON the Junior division for Dairy Bowl?).
Although 2021 presented some of the same barriers we faced in 2020, the association advanced and made as many events as possible for our members. The summer picnic was well-attended and a wonderful time for all to relax; Spring Carousel and State Show had tremendous quality cattle exhibited; and our Junior Executive Committee has met in-person throughout the year, to plan and discuss how to strengthen the Junior association.
For 2022 the plan is to make all those events happen again and to focus heavily on the Junior association and its involvement, as well as how to strengthen the DJM program.
CAROUSEL
My goal was to make Carousel happen, and we did! Although the numbers of cattle and exhibitors were not what they had been in recent years, the feedback from those who attended was positive and everyone loved the new location.
We will be returning to Hamburg again this year from March 30-April 4 (check out page 5 for the full schedule), and I hope those who weren’t able to attend last year are able to this year. and, speaking of shows, mark your calendars for our State Show we will be returning to Greenwich, N.Y., again this year from Sept. 7-11.
SALES
We had a successful year in sales. Not only did we generate revenue for the association, we offered a lot of great cattle, embryos and IVF sessions from New York to others all over the country. We will start 2022 with an ET sale at the NY Holstein convention on Jan. 14. There will be something for everyone, so don’t miss this sale!
THE NEWS
Our goal for 2021 was to put more energy into both the printed News and our online pages so members had something worthwhile to read. Based on the feedback received, I think this is something we at the association need to continue to focus on in 2022. This year we will be offering 6 issues of the News: January, March, May, July, September and November.
We will also be offering more transparent advertising rates and you can expect Melissa to spend more face-toface time with our members. We have listened to what our members said, and I hope you are all happy with the upcoming changes and will consider advertising in 2022!
SELF-CARE
How did you all do with regularly doing something for yourself? I reminded everyone of this concept about halfway through the year, hoping you would remember to focus on you. For 2022 I will challenge everyone again to try to regularly do something for yourself.
I feel like so many of the members I encounter are selfless people and are constantly doing for others. Because of this you forget about yourselves - but as you know, you can’t help others if you aren’t taking care of yourself first. And remember, self-care can be something small … like taking 10 minutes to sit and drink your coffee instead of running out the door with it in hand.
APPRECIATION
It is important to let others know they are appreciated and valued. There are so many who volunteer their time to help make this association what it is today, and I hope you all know how valued you are! Thank you again to everyone who helped in 2021 - I wouldn’t have been able to do half of what I did without you.
Also, if you would like to get involved somehow with the association, do not hesitate to reach out to me. 2022 is full of exciting events and I would love to have your help.
Happy New Year, and I hope you stay warm and healthy! – Chelsea
Juniors, don’t forget to submit your photos for the photo contest. All entries are due to me by Feb. 1 - the winning picture, picked by the 2021 and 2022 JEC, will be featured on the March News cover!
