IT’S TIME...

to optimize herd comfort and performance with routine milk pregnancy testing.

Time to Rest

Least invasive method to confirm pregnancy. Promotes resting time which is associated with improved production. Research shows one hour of lost resting time leads to approximately 3.5 lbs. less milk/cow/day.

Saves Time

Conduct through routine DHI samples. Eliminates time and labor to sort, restrain and palpate animals.

Now is the Time

At 98% accurate, the milk pregnancy test identifies pregnancy status as early as 28-days post breeding until dry off.

From the President’s Pen

Michigan Holstein Association Hi All, I hope this finds everyone well, with crops planted and either finished with 1st cutting hay or getting rolling with it. To me this spring has seemed chilly, but who knows what Mother Nature has in store for us this summer! I would like to thank the Show Committee for the great job they did in planning and putting on the Great Lakes All-Breeds Spring Show. Our numbers may have been down a bit this year, but I think the quality spoke for itself! Great Job to our exhibitors and breeders. I look forward to seeing what they have in store for our ALL-MICHIGAN Show in July! Our Sale Committee and Sale Manager, Randy Lettinga, also deserve a pat on the back. Many of you know its hard to sell animals in a depressed market, but I think all said and done, it proves quality animals demand decent prices even in depressed markets. The sale sold 37 actual live lots with an average of just of $1400. The sale had 4 lots over $2,000. The high seller was a December Brown Swiss calf consigned by Blessing Farms and Brian Garrison, of Indiana. She sold for $3,900 to Lynn DeForest. Second High Seller was consigned by Moo-Ville, the Westendorp family of Nashville, she sold for $3100.

happening in 2020 and finally attending one in 2021, it was gratifying. It was great so see everyone and catch up on the “what’s what” in Michigan. Hope to see everyone in July! Until then…

Michigan Junior Holstein News

From Your President

As summer gets closer, the Michigan Junior Holstein board gets more excited about what this summer has to offer all of Michigan’s junior members. From attending National Holstein Convention, to seeing members at the Michigan summer show we are eager to connect with the youth in our state and network with juniors around the nation.

Before we dive into summer, let us not forget the exciting times we had this spring. Juniors found themselves in the show ring, for some, for the first time in over a year! At this time, we also welcomed Mill Wheel Show Clinics who hosted a fantastic showmanship and fitting clinic, we hope to see Katie back in Michigan again! The 2021 National Holstein Convention is one event that MJHA is always looking forward to. Knowing that this is an excellent opportunity to meet dairy industry leaders around the nation, this event also gives the youth in our state an experience that they will never forget. Good luck to those members attending and

competing in contests this year! The week of July 12th is one to look forward to as the summer show will be held at this time. We hope to see many of you there! For updates about our annual meeting and dairy fun day, please like and follow our Facebook page, as we continue our planning process. Thank you for your time,

Notes From the Field

Max & Mandi’s Memo In the foreword of his 1985 book Progress of the Breed, The History of U.S. Holsteins, Richard H. Mansfield wrote, “Few organizations devoted to livestock interests have achieved the sustained forward movement of the Association over such a long period of time. Through the years, the Association and the breed faced matching challenges and opportunities, but none equaled the last three decades.”

These three areas of focus have continued to help the Holstein breed move forward in the 21st century, and Holstein Association USA offers easy ways for members to use all three tools. Our team of highly trained classifiers continues to provide unbiased evaluations of your herd for mating and management purposes. Contract classification is a cost-effective option for those who classify three or more times a year.

During the 36 years since this book was published, a multitude of new challenges and opportunities have arisen for Registered Holstein breeders. Much as they did in the decades prior, our members have risen to meet the challenges and take ahold of the opportunities presented.

Data from genetic evaluations are made available in a variety of forms, both in print and online. Genetic testing services can also be purchased through Holstein Association USA. AgriTech Analytics (ATA) is a DHIA certified dairy records processing center that provides a wide selection of reports for farmers. A division of Holstein Association USA, ATA offers same day turnaround on data received from your service provider.

Mansfield went on to write “It was during this time that the breeding of dairy cattle made the transition from an art to a science – that technological advances were readily introduced and implemented – that reliable genetic data and information became critical to improvement of the species – that industry integrity and credibility became an unqualified, fundamental hallmark for the Association to be able to serve its true purpose.” The technological advances and reliable genetic data available to Holstein breeders today are certainly much greater than they were in the 1980s. Classification, production testing, and genetic evaluation were identified as core “tools of the trade” used by Holstein breeders on the back cover on Mansfield’s book.

Classification, production testing, and genetic evaluation information are just a few of the products and services Holstein USA provides to members. These tools have all played an important role in improving the production efficiency of U.S. Registered Holsteins. With more technology and tools at producer’s fingertips than ever before, Holsteins are achieving new heights and making history. We look forward to the summer and continuing to serve our territories. Call us if you need anything!

Benthem Brothers Dairy announced as 2021 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year Benthem Brothers Dairy announced as 2021 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year EAST LANSING, Michigan – Benthem Brothers Dairy will receive the 2021 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year Award. The dairy is a family operation run by brothers Doug and Bruce, along with Doug’s son Jason and Bruce’s sons Ryan and Kyle. The award is given by the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University (MSU) and will be presented during the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference, which will be held virtually Feb. 4-5, 2021. MHA Honors a Baker Family Tradition gan futurity in 1998, she produced six daughters for the herd, four of which scored Excellent. Sweet’s bloodlines continue to influence the herd. Star-Summit B S Bootsie, EX 94 3E GMD DOM is another outstanding herd cow, winning her futurity in 1994 and producing six Excellent daughters.

Baker accepts the award from past winner Steve Reed By Bev Berens Tim Baker of Byron Center was named the Michigan Holstein Association’s Master Breeder for 2021. It’s not the first time a member of the family earned the award; he follows in the footsteps of his father, Henry Baker, who won the state’s first Holstein Association Master Breeder award in 1985.

Star Summit Farm ran a hot streak recently, winning Michigan’s Great Lakes Futurity in 2011 and 2015, earning Reserve Grand Champion at the Michigan Holstein State Show in 2015 and taking Reserve Champion cow at the Michigan State Fair in 1994. In 2010, Baker was named Outstanding Young Breeder for the Michigan Holstein Association. He has served as the association’s president, been on the executive board and show committee and served as National Holstein Convention delegate numerous times. Three times the farm has received Herd of Excellence awards. He is also a longtime 4-H leader in Ottawa County. Zondlak, longtime herdsperson, neighbor and friend, nominated Baker for the award. “I’ve worked alongside him for a lot of years and if there’s one thing I know, it’s that he’s passionate about farming. You can tell that he loves what he does, and I think his hard work is reflected in the quality of his herd,” she explained.

“It is a pretty good honor to have my name on the list of master breeders with some of those older guys,” the younger Baker said. “It is pretty special. To be listed with people like Velmar and Duane Green and my dad, people who aren’t even in cows anymore, is pretty special.” He appreciates the influence and support of his wife, Jennifer, and children, Gerrit, Jack and Elise. Brittney Zondlak has worked for the Bakers’ Star Summit Farm for 20 years and has also been an influencer on the herd’s success. “I appreciate my family, my kids, people like Brittney and good health,” Baker said. “It’s important to surround yourself with good people. I’m blessed with good health in general, and that helps keeps attitudes positive. “Dr. Bob Vlietstra (retired)has been a huge influence in the past as my former veterinarian. He was encouraging, gave good advice on many small things that helped the farm keep progressing.” Baker has led the farm for the past 36 years and is a second-generation dairyman. His first registered calf came as a gift from his parents at age 11. She eventually scored VG-86 and produced 230,000 gallons lifetime milk. His breeding philosophy combines high production, type, and longevity. Bulls must transmit correct udders, strong feet and legs, body capacity and be backed by strong cow families. Herd data reflect a commitment to this vision: During the most recent classification, 30 Excellent, 50 Very Good and 17 Good Plus cows called the farm home, and 90 percent of them carry the farm’s prefix. The farm has a 35-year history of classification results and is 100 percent registered.

Brinks-Rivera named 2021 Outstanding Young Breeder By Bev Berens Kenda Brinks-Rivera is the latest in the list of young women to earn the Outstanding Young Breeder Award from Michigan’s Holstein Association. With a thirst for knowledge and a passion for Holsteins, she said the award checks off the third of her big dreams in the dairy industry in a short time. In 2018, the first was realized when buses rolled onto the McBain farm during the Holstein Association’s National Convention in Traverse City. That same week, the second dream became reality when she purchased her own heifer during the convention’s annual sale. Brinks-Rivera and her husband, Ruben, farm with two generations at Ber-Sher Dairy, where the family milks approximately 200 cows. She is responsible for cow and heifer care, along with the farm’s genetics program, earning respect from dairy professionals at a young age for the genetic progress made at the farm. “I can’t really explain my reaction because I was shocked that I got it,” she said. “It means more than I can really describe; I’ve learned so much from my grandpa and dad about genetics, and I just kind of took it under my own wing. I’ve always been in love with this herd and one cow family, and I think that family really helped achieve this award.” She has successfully marketed high-genomic bloodlines nationally and to Japan. “The Brinks family is working to breed an elite and balanced herd for type and production, while targeting a few specific bloodlines for high-rank on the genomic indexes,”

Producers Association, company boards and local youth shows. Among its outreach endeavors, the farm hosted Breakfast on the Farm in 2011 and recently hosted a farm tour for MMPA young farmers. sQuality, efficiency, and good management have been operational goals for Benthem Brothers Dairy, and it has been recognized for the effort. In 2019 and 2020 it was awarded National Mastitis Council National Dairy Quality Awards (Silver). In 2017, not only did the dairy receive a Gold MMPA Quality Award, but it also was a finalist for Consumers Energy Project of the Year. The farm is featured as a case study by Consumers Energy for upgrades resulting in 687,598 kWh electric savings each year. The farm also is Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program verified in farmstead, cropping and livestock. In the words of the nominator, “their congeniality and open-farm policy to any of their fellow producers make the Benthems an outstanding neighbor, dairy producer and nominee for this award.” “The Benthems are leading the way in using new technologies which benefit farm economics, employee satisfaction and animal welfare,” said Dr. Dale Rozeboom, interim co-chair of the Department of Animal Science. “It is with great pleasure that the MSU Department of Animal Science recognizes the Benthem Brothers Dairy as the 2021 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year.” Summer 2021

Kenda Brinks-Rivera received the award at the Michigan Holstein Association Annual Meeting in Corunna. said Jess Jakubic, of Central Star who assists the Brinks family on sire selection. “They also had the opportunity to sell an early and high-ranking Thonmaker daughter in the National Convention sale. “Kenda takes every opportunity to ask questions and learn from the experience of others to better herself and the family’s operation, especially in the areas of sire selection, best management practices and marketing.” Herd highlights include eight Progressive Genetics Herd Awards, nine Gold Medal Dams and 15 Dams of Merit all carrying the Ber-Sher prefix. Two hundred forty-six Ber-Sher cows attained higher than 100,000-pound milk records and 16 exceeded 200,000-pound records: Ber-Sher Marty Con Connor (VG-86) produced 344,330 lifetime and Ber-Sher Whiz Connor Cookie (GP-82) hit 320,910. And Ber-Sher Pagewa Toni Thelma holds a National Elite Performer title for the farm. In 2018, Ber-Sher Dairy expanded to include a creamery, selling cheese through local and specialty markets throughout Michigan, beginning with cheese curds as its specialty. In 2020, it began bottling milk. An all-hands-on-deck approach puts every family member to work in the barn, in the creamery and in the marketing department. Brinks-Rivera now splits her time between the farm and creamery. She and Ruben are raising their three children - Hadley, Finley and Lakyn - to be the next farming generation. Brinks-Rivera’s parents, Ron and Barb Brinks, her sister Amberly Mejia and brothers Nick and Riley Brinks are also involved in all aspects of the operation.

From the Jersey Desk

Michigan Jersey Cattle Club Wow. It felt good to get back in the show ring and see our dairy family at the Great Lakes Spring Show in April. A huge thank you to the show committees from both the MHA and MJCC. Between this show and the summer show they have put a lot of time into creating a great experience for us. I know for us, we enjoyed watching our kids experience the show after nearly two years since our last time together in Michigan. They’re starting to help at the wash rack and in the show ring, and they can’t wait to come back this summer. I also want to take an opportunity to thank the sale committees along with Randy and his team for a great Foundation Sale. We were able to sell several jerseys this year through the sale with some of the commissions coming back to MJCC to help promote the jersey breed in Michigan. Thank you to all the buyers and sellers. As I mentioned earlier, we are eagerly looking forward to the All-Michigan Show this summer in Hillsdale County. The show committees have created an opportunity for us to draw in competition from neighboring states as well as offer premiums to our exhibitors. We hope to see you there showing off your best or just enjoying good looking cows and your dairy family!

In Memoriam

Alan Wayne Kuehnert, 64, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, in Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne on Feb. 8, 1957, he was a son of Melvin and Delores (Fritz) Kuehnert. He spent his formative years in rural Fort Wayne, graduating from Carroll High School in 1975. Alan was married to Cynthia Pullen in Fort Wayne on Nov. 12, 1977. He, along with his family, own and operate Kuehnert Dairy Farm, a proud Indiana family farm that has been in operation since 1897. Alan was the fourth generation to farm. His farm has hosted the Kuehnert Dairy Fall Festival since 2013. Alan knew no strangers. His favorite thing to do was to interact with the guests that attended the festival on his farm. He loved to tell his family’s story with the goal of instilling a trust in the quality of the products that U.S. farmers produce. Alan’s drive in life was faith, family, friends, and his farm. He was a proud father and grandfather who loved to work alongside his family. He was a faithful servant to his community, where he truly helped and touched so many lives. Alan was an active leader at St. John’s Lutheran Church-Lake Township. He was a true advocate for Indiana agriculture, leading and serving on the boards of various organizations. He was also a 40-year member of the National Holstein Association and served on the Prairie Farms Board of Directors. In 2019, Kuehnert Dairy Farm served the milk to the winning driver of the Indianapolis 500. He called this experience “the opportunity of a lifetime.” Alan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cynthia Kuehnert; his parents, Melvin and Delores Kuehnert; his two sons, Nathan (Sarah) Kuehnert and Andrew (Brittany) Kuehnert; his four grandchildren, Allie, Bryar, Kennedy, and Carson; a brother, Stanley (Carol) Kuehnert; and three sisters, Sharon (John) Engstrom, Linda (Anthony) Eagle, and Nancy (Pastor David) Koeneman. Larry Keinath, 74, of Vassar passed away peacefully on May 4, 2021 on his centennial farm, following a brief illness, surrounded by family and friends. He was born July 22, 1946 to the late Henry and Lillian (Koeppendoerfer) Keinath. He was raised in Vassar, Michigan, graduated from Vassar High School in 1964, and attended Delta College. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millington. Larry was a partner with his brothers in Keinath Brothers’ Dairy Farm for over 50 years. Over the years, he was a member and held offices in MMPA, DHIA, Select Sires and District 1 Holstein. He was past president of the Tuscola County 4-H and a leader in the Richville Livestock 4-H club. He valued assisting countless youth with their 4-H projects, including all his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed showing registered Holsteins all his life and in later years, also showed Brown Swiss at the Tuscola County Fair, the Michigan State Fair, and many other livestock shows. Larry, affectionately known a U.L., was everyone’s favorite uncle, related or not. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Larry was the drop-in neighbor that never failed to bring out laughter with his quick, witty humor and his ability to tease. He enjoyed his trips to the stockyards, going to grab a popsicle, taking a crop tour, and catching up on neighborhood “news” as well as lunches and coffee with friends. His quick, witty humor would always make you smile. Larry took great pleasure with his life on his farm, his cows and chickens, rarely missing chores. Larry leaves to cherish his memory, his brother Robert 20 Michigan Dairy Cattle News

(Elaine) Keinath; sister Janice (James) Kribs; and brother John (Carol) Keinath; brother-in-law Ralph (Marie) Worden, 11 nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, plus many special friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Lillian Keinath. sister Roesmary Worden, brother Ron Keinath, and sister-in-law Kay Keinath. The family would like to give a special recognition for his two special caregivers, Lori Hecht and Janel Woodward for going above and beyond during the last few months.
