As I sat on the veranda at the Hales Mills Golf Course in John stown, NY., enjoying some Cabot yogurt and fruit, it was fun to see golf cart after golf cart of NY Holstein enthusiasts head out to tackle 18 holes of golf at the NY State Picnic and Golf Outing.

I’m not a golfer, so I was quite content eating yogurt and looking at the Adirondacks. But when they asked my husband and I to get on a golf cart and go take pictures of the golfers, we were all about it. We wasted no time as we traversed the course knowing nothing of golf cart etiquette hoping we wouldn’t make anyone mad if we were noisy or drove on the wrong grass.

We could easily identify those who visited the golf course on a regular basis and those who thought hitting a golf ball would be no different than swinging a baseball bat. And to see dairy farmers who spend their days grinding it out on the farm, managing cows and putting out fires were instead on a golf course swinging at a tiny ball, laughing when they missed it and relaxing with their friends, it was like a breath of fresh air.

While it wasn’t the typical state picnic activities of visiting a farm and seeing great cows, that day spent in the foothills of the Adirondacks enjoying a few hours of friendly competition away from the daily responsibilities served a purpose. Some wanted to compete, others wanted the challenge and yet others just needed the hope and rejuvenation that comes with friendship and the common bond of the Holstein cow. A special thanks to the planning committee and the spon sors of that great event!

Hello everyone! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer and early fall. I am currently in my senior year of high school and can’t believe it’s already been a month since the start of school. Along with that harvest season is in full swing. My favorite part of this time of year is the amazing smell of fresh cut corn. While I am stuck at school, many of our juniors have the amazing opportunity to go to the World Dairy Expo. Whether showing your cows on the colored shavings, spending time with family and friends, competing, or even experiencing the trade show, I hope you all enjoy that time.

Now I know it is still fall, but winter is right around the corner. Which means it is time to start thinking about convention. Start thinking of a speech topic and start writing it, practice some questions for

By trying something new you are gaining some many different experiences and will be able to meet new friends. My favorite things to do for convention are my DJM book and speech. I also encourage all of you to think about becoming a member of the Junior Executive Committee. It is a lot of fun and you get to work together with a team from fellow juniors all across the state.

Retirement is fun: Lots of time to call your own and tons of volunteer opportunities. More time for friends and family, books to read, flowers beds to pamper, recipes to try, area trails to hike. For me, lots of good stuff.

Then there’s a career that was the best. Challenging, rewarding, fulfilling, interesting, diverse. In the dairy industry that has always been huge in my life with the people I like the most and have the most in common. So, when Beth Keene asked me if I would consider taking an interim position, what could I say? Part time for no more than six months until a new Executive Manager can be found were my terms.

So here we are again. You’ve read and heard me say, “teamwork works” many times. Times are different than they were when I retired six years ago, but that statement is still true. That said, I ask you to join our search team and help us find a new Executive Manager. Perhaps it’s a job that has never been clearly defined, so here goes, from my point of view. Many hats for sure. We host our main events: Convention, Carousel, and State Show along with lots of day-to-day meetings, shows, banquets on the state and county level and then the everyday, often tedious, stuff that goes with any business. And NYHA is a business. Every day is a new day. Some days are a lot more fun than others. Flexibility and extreme organization are key to keeping things in order and flowing smoothly in our Association and with office staff. A team player who leads and will take the heat, has communication skills, vocal and written, with every age bracket, a love of numbers, budgets, and respect for conservative spending. Love for the Holstein cow and the industry she leads. A diplomat, cheerleader, and negotiator. Commitment, love of people, ambition, willingness to go the extra mile, metaphorically and physically. New York is a big old state. Nobody can be everywhere, but to not attend a function for no reason other than “far away” is not fair to members. And fair and equal to all membership is important. Not only is New York a big state geographically, our NY dairy industry is hugely diverse. The needs of members vary greatly. To keep membership viable, leadership must try to serve and promote all. Our cattle and our membership are envied across the country. Our juniors are amazing. That doesn’t just happen. It takes lots of hard work, creativity, vision, and teamwork.

Building an Executive Committee with strengths in particular areas worked for me. Sam Simon, Tom Kugler for the sharp dollar knife. Charlie McEvoy and Jimmy Perotti for making everyone feel included and welcome. Tim Perotti and Pat Pullis for keeping juniors active, participating, and setting the example for volunteering. These are just examples of key team members that served all of us so well. There are many.

Please join the Executive Committee as they search for a new leader. If you know someone who fits the bill,

please let us know so we can reach out to them. And please encourage that person to consider the job. It’s a good one. If you have questions or suggestions about the job or job description, we need to hear them.

2022 Friend of NYHA Award

Syd McEvoy was presented with the 2022 Friend of New York Holstein award at the recent NY State Fair Holstein Show. Long-time friend and colleague, Patsy Gifford made the presentation that honored the voice of the NY Spring Dairy Carousel and NYHA enthusiast. Graduating from Cornell, Syd spent his early years as the Chenango County 4-H Agent before serving as the Cortland County 4-H Agent for a combined total of 32 years. Patsy stated, “An anchor element of the recognition and respect Carousel receives is the expert announcing that Syd does each year. And as a member of the Carousel team, he has often been the first in the barn in the morning answering questions, handing out back tag numbers, whatever it takes to help the entire event run smoothly.” Syd continues to serve the association and was back at the mic for the NY State Holstein in Greenwich.

Where has the year gone? Here we are into September already! As my favorite season of fall approaches, the summer leaves many memories behind. With that being said, I thought it would be neat to reflect back on some highlights of NY cattle and NY Holstein members over the decades. How many of you can relate/remember?!

1972 - Hillranch Fond Matt Jean – Twin EX 96 5E was born in this year, but it was in 1975 she was first two-year old and Grand Champion at the NYS Fair and first in her class at the Western National. She was bred by Donald Reed of Cortland, sold to Erinwood of LeRoy and then to George Morgan of Dreamstreet in Walton, all NY Holstein members and enthusiasts!

1982 - A feature article in July 1982 issue of the Holstein World with Professor George Trimberger, expert in dairy cattle, a pioneer in artificial insemination, and the creator of type classification of Holstein cattle worldwide. Professor Trimberger was at Cornell from 1944 until his retirement in 1975, coached 24 Cornell Dairy Cattle Judging teams who competed in national contests and accumulated one of the best records in the U.S. Many of his former judging team members and NY Holstein members went on to have tremendously successful careers in the dairy industry as cattle breeders, fitters, dairy cattle judges and so much more!

1992 – C Merckley Starbuck Whitney EX 96, owned by NY Holstein member Randy Fraiser. Randy showed at the time under the Twin Wind name. Whitney was Grand and Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo in 1992 (and 1993) and Grand at the Royal Winter Fair in 1992 (and 1994).

2002 – Young Allison Gaige and Gaige Highlight Tamara of Schoharie, stole the hearts of many across the country as Tamara went on to be named Grand Champion Female of the International Junior Show in Madison, WI. Tamara, bred by NY Holstein members David and Donna Gaige and went on to score EX 97. Her breakdowns included a score of 100 in body capacity, frame and dairy character, 97 for feet and legs and 93 in udder.

2012 – Co-Vale Fever Camila, All American Summer Yearling. Camila was 1st Jr 3 int. Champion, Honarable Mention Grand Champion at the 2012 New York State Fair. Bred by Brad Cates, Co-Vale Farm, Preble and owned at the time by Liddleholme Holsteins, Argyle.

2022 – What will your memories be??

Chelsea Hanselman has decided to leave her post as Executive Manager of NYHA. Her last day with NY Holstein was August 12. All of us at NYHA thank Chelsea for her service over the past 2+ years and wish her much success in her future endeavors.

Former NYHA Executive Manager Patsy Gifford has taken over the role on an interim/part-time basis until the post is filled. Patsy began her role with NY Holstein on August 1 and will be working three days a week, usually Tuesday thru Thursday, and for all NYHA activities throughout the state that are scheduled.

NYHA continues to be active! Summer shows were tremendously successful, both the NY State Fair and NY State Holstein Show will be completed as of this issue. The first annual Dairy Industry Golf Outing, hosted by NY Holstein was a huge success! Many thanks to all who made this activity come to fruition. A big shout out to Bonnie Bargstedt and her committee and to Hales Mills Golf Course for their enormous effort in pulling this together. Sponsors, golfers and all other helpers, thank you!!!

The 2023 NY Holstein Convention is shaping up, thanks to Convention co-chairs Jessica Hula- Federicks and her sister Jen Ploetz and their committee. Watch for schedules and updates as the Convention heads back to the Double Tree in Syracuse in January.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the Executive Committee and NYHA Standing committee chair people for their continued efforts on behalf of NYHA. Your efforts are truly appreciated. Thank you!

And to the Jrs, thank you for being a part of this great organization! Keep involved and enjoying all the events that come with Registered Holsteins! THE TOLLGATE RECIPE:

Collaboration, Quality, & Cow Families

By collaborating with their peers and committing to milk quality, Jim and Karen Davenport are proving one need not be “big” to operate a profitable dairy farm. They do it by milking 70 cows in a tie-stall barn on rented facilities, shipping some milk to Agri-Mark and the balance to a plant they own with several other dairy producers to process it using the Hudson Valley Fresh (HVF) label.

The term high-quality may be an understatement for milk produced at Tollgate Farm in Ancramdale, New York. The milking string of approximately 50 Holsteins, 16 Jerseys and five Ayrshires is the country’s most honored in terms of milk quality awards. It won a record seven Platinums in the National Dairy Quality Awards program sponsored by the National Mastitis Council (NMC), and has earned numerous milk quality awards from Agri-Mark.

By prioritizing cow comfort and cleanliness, herd health and welfare, the “clean” milk with low somatic cell and bacteria counts

sells itself to HVF customers.

For many years, Jim and herdsman Dave Schillawski shared milking responsibilities. In June 2022, those duties transferred to Schillawski and three relief milkers: a family friend and Jim’s brothers, Bill and Scott, who own some cows in the herd.

The change was made to enable Jim to commute 50 minutes each way to his 40-hour “part-time” job at the HVF plant in Kingston. He and two other producers help manage the plant so Sam Simon, founder and architect of the HVF brand, can eventually step down. The goal is to keep the business moving forward until the next generation can carry the ball. With Jim’s reduced time on the farm, Ethan Coutu - who brought the Jerseys to Tollgate - is picking up the slack and working toward ownership of the farm business.

The Tollgate Story

The story for Tollgate begins in 1939, when the brothers’ grandfather, Preston Davenport, moved his herd of registered

Ayrshires from Massachusetts to Litchfield, Connecticut. The Davenports milked cows and bottled and delivered fluid milk locally until the mid-1960s. They sold the bulk of the herd and farmland in 1974.

It was on this farm in western Connecticut where the brothers developed a passion for cattle and a desire to emulate the masterful breeding of their grandfather. All were active with 4-H, graduated from the University of Connecticut and pursued careers tied to the agriculture industry. Though Jim started as an engineering major, he switched to animal science halfway through his studies. The move put him in contact with Karen, who was taking courses to become an agricultural science teacher – and who recently retired after 31 years of teaching at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

They married in 1984. In the early years, Jim worked at other farms and was a DHI supervisor. The two began piecing together their own herd of Holsteins and

rented their first farm in 1986. They moved the herd to Columbia County in New York two years later, then settled on the current farm in 1993.

This farm with a spectacular view of the Catskills has its own vibrant history. The current owners, Drs. Woody and Saida Baxt, while on the hunt for a property with a view learned of its existence from well-known veterinarian and cattle breeder Dr. George Beneke at the Dutchess County Fair. The previous owners had lost their barn to a fire and had no plans to rebuild. The doctors purchased the property, enrolled the land in the agricultural land trust program and built an immaculate show facility for wealthy cattle investors.

When the Davenports came on the scene years later, the barns were empty, vacated when tax reform made investments less lucrative. The Davenports and the Baxts entered a handshake lease, an agreement that has stood for nearly three decades. The arrangement is a win not only for owner and tenant, but the community as well.

Milk Markets

The Davenports have been shipping milk through Agri-Mark, Inc. since 1986 and began sending

the majority of their milk to Hudson Valley Fresh Dairy LLC in 2010.

Dr. Sam Simon, a physician and farm owner, established HVF in 2004 to take control of his own destiny for milk prices and market a premium product. The company is owned by 11 dairy producers, including the Davenports and the Simons. HVF processes fluid milk, cream, yogurt and ice cream mix and distributes to 350 stores in the Hudson Valley and metro New York City. It is also on the menu for the military cadets at West Point. A key marketing message is a freshness guarantee of three days from farm to table.

“By working with Agri-Mark and Hudson Valley Fresh, we have been able to survive as a small dairy farm,” noted Jim.

Typically, milk is picked up every other day, with most heading to the HVF plant. But because processing demands fluctuate, there are times milk is not needed in Kingston, so Agri-Mark delivers it to a different customer. This flexibility in balancing the daily needs of HVF allows the freshest products to reach customers.

Clean Milk Starts with Clean Cows

At Tollgate Farm, the protocol for producing high-quality milk is not fancy. Rather, it is consistent and hinges on three concepts that can be applied to tie stall, parlor or robot settings:

1. Start with clean cows. Stalls are lined with foam mattresses, bedded with kiln-dried sawdust and dusted with hydrated lime. Regular rounds are made to keep stalls clean, focusing on periods when cows are likely to lay down, like right after milking and when they return from the exercise lot. Wet, soiled bedding is scraped into the gutter and fresh bedding pulled to the rear of the stall. Clean cows create a more efficient process across the entire milking chain.

2. Do a thorough job with teat dipping. Every milker wears nitrile gloves. Before milking, teats are checked for moisture and dirt and dry-wiped if necessary. They are stripped, dipped in an iodine (0.5 percent) solution using a nonreturn dipper and dried with a paper towel 60 seconds later. The machine is attached with minimal or no air intake and removed when the vacuum is completely released. Teats are post-dipped their entire length to the udder floor to ensure full coverage - the action rinses off the milk film on the teat and replaces it with a germicidal layer of dip. Leftover teat dip is tossed after each milking.

3. Maintain a clean milking system. All milking units go through a clean-in-place (CIP) wash after each milking and a chlorinated sanitize cycle before the next milking. In the morning, all milking units get an external rinse, then a manual surface scrubbing with a rinse of mild acid solution before they are hooked into the rest of the system for the CIP wash. After both morning and afternoon milkings, the same soap/acid combination is used to hand-scrub the teat dipper, strip cup and CMT paddle. These tools are allowed to dry on a stainless steel shelf. After the evening milking, the milking units and hoses are rinsed off and spot-scrubbed before hooking up for the CIP system wash.

strong, loyal customer base has been built on milk quality. When Covid initially struck, we were able

to get product on shelves because we are a local supplier. That got our foot in the door of big-box stores, like ShopRite and Stop & Shop, and introduced us to new customers,” he

said.

“But milk quality is what keeps us there. When supply issues resolved and these stores contemplated dropping us, our customers came to the rescue. They demanded our products be kept in the cases, so we continue to serve these markets.”

Producing an Ultra-Premium Product

So how does the herd at Tollgate maintain average SCC levels under 35,000 cells/milliliter, raw counts around 1,400 and lab-pasteurized counts of about 19? Follow a basic hygiene protocol and pay attention to details, according to Jim.

A cow need not be show-ready, but she should be clean enough that you would drink milk directly from the udder. Too, pay attention to teat cleanliness and consider where and when they will contact wet, soiled surfaces.

same milking routine every day since 1987, after I watched a video on milk quality produced by the University of Minnesota Extension,” he added.

The team at Tollgate provides a comfortable environment, nutritionally sound ration and recommended vaccinations, as these impact immunity and resistance to mastitis. Milk from all four quarters of cows with high somatic cell counts is screened using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). Suspect cows are re-tested during the next milking and cultured if the suspect quarter shows no improvement or worsens. It is critical to identify the pathogen for treatment to be effective. All fresh cows are tested prior to introducing their milk to the tank.

Every producer who milks their own cows can relate to Jim’s breeding philosophy: “I want a herd

of cows I enjoy milking, even on Christmas day.” The barn is full of beauties that fit that bill.

With the last classification, the breed age average stands at 111.2 percent. The Davenports have received the Progressive Breeders Registry from Holstein USA for more than 25 years and bred 51 Excellent cows. The rolling herd average is 24,459 pounds milk, 946 pounds fat, and 730 pounds protein.

Though every cow has earned her place in the barn, some cow families naturally rise to the top. Included in this group is the “B” cow family that traces to Willow Terrace 2 Rex Beauty, a member of Dr. Beneke’s herd that was housed at Tollgate and eventually purchased by Jim. The highest-scored cow, Tollgate-Vu Durham Bluebell, EX94, hails from this family, as do a pair of EX-93 cows: Tollgate-Vu Braxton Blue, a granddaughter of Bluebell, and Tollgate-Vu Aftershock Bingo, in the herd today.

A bloodline dear to Jim’s heart

is the “C” cow family that descends from Fox-Cliff Conel, EX-92, an Elevation daughter he rescued from a herd that eventually sold under the whole herd buyout program in 1986. A promising member of this family is Tollgate-Vu Diamondback Carina, VG-87. She recently topped the senior three-year-old class and was named Grand Champion of the Eastern New York Holstein Show in July.

Jim’s brother Scott is also developing elite Holstein genetics through his herd, Watch-Hill, housed at Tollgate. The current star is Ms Connies Crush Cait-ET, EX90, a granddaughter of three-time All-American and All-Canadian Robrook Goldwyn Cameron, EX95. She stood second to Carina in the senior three-year-old class at the Eastern New York Holstein Show and was Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion.

The Future at Tollgate

As Jim approaches “real” retirement, he is paving the road for a successor to take the reins at the farm. Ethan, another Connecticut 4-H member who found his passion in purebred Jersey cattle and the dairy business, will assume the farm side of the business. He worked at Arethusa Farm in Litchfield, shipped milk to their bottling plant and operated his own farm in Morris, Connecticut, for several years.

In December 2021 he moved his Jersey herd to New York. To accommodate the brown cows, box stalls in the old barn were taken out and smaller tie stalls added. A 36-by-

40-foot addition with deep bedded pens with headlocks was built for transitioning cows in and out of the milking herd.

At the plant, Jim and his cohorts are searching for a mentee with the mindset of the founders. “I want to mentor someone from within who can step up and lead. A person with skin in the game will be more likely to make the right business decisions for Hudson Valley Fresh to move forward into the future,” he explained.

As such, the future for the farm and processing plant looks bright and the legacy of Tollgate is sure to continue.

All-NY and Junior All-NY Contest Point System

1. Exhibitors must be current paid members of the New York Holstein Association

2. Junior Owned animals must be owned by the Junior exhibitor by July 15, 2022. If an animal is sold over the course of the show season points from shows where the animal was still junior owned do count.

3. Shows are divided into 2 divisions Tier 1 & Tier 2. See below for the shows that qualify for each category.

Tier 1 Shows Northeast Spring National Holstein Show, New York State Show, NY State Fair **Northeast Spring National Junior Show for Junior All NY

Tier 2 Shows County or Regional Holstein Club Shows-shows that you must be a NY member to exhibit at.

4. Point breaks are based on the number of head exhibited at a show. In the Junior All NY Division the head count is based on total animals exhibited at a show, not just Junior exhibited animals with the exception of the Spring National Junior Show.

5. Junior All NY Points are based on Junior Show Placings only.

6. Exhibitors can choose a total of 3 shows to count toward their All NY Award Total. This must be a placing from a Tier 1 Show, a placing from a Tier 2 Show, and the third placing may be from either a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Show. i.e. NY Spring Show, OHM Show, NY State Show OR NY State Fair, OHM Show, Schoharie County Show.

7. Points won by a Fall Yearling carry over if they are later shown as a Fall Yearling in Milk.

8. Ties are broken on the animal’s placing at their Tier 1 Show Choice.

9. Forms must be submitted to the office by October 15th, 2022

4. Junior exhibitors who meet the qualifications of this contest are eligible to enter. Animals shown by a junior with a non ownership certificate are also eligible.

Carol Thorn Menendez

Carol Thorn Menendez, Walden, NY, left this world on June 9, 2022, to join her husband Mino in heaven, where he has been awaiting her for the last 18 years.

Predeceased by her husband, Mino Menendez.  She is survived by siblings Donald (Fay) Thorn and Marian “Mooch” (Bob) Wilson; children, Claire (Steve) Dubnik, Michael (Joann) Menendez, Edward (Kathy) Menendez, Daniel (Susan) Menendez, Steven (Helen) Menendez, and Matthew (Rebecca) Menendez; She was “Gma” to her grandchildren, Carolyn and Colin Dubnik, Zachary (Diana) and Daniel (Janelle) Menendez, Jolie (Jeff) McPhee and Max (Mace) Menendez, Daniel, Kelly and Cassie Menendez, Megan and Sarah Menendez, Lauren and Jack Menendez, and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was born on November 8, 1939, in Middletown, NY to John and Myrtle Thorn and was raised in Thompson Ridge, NY.  She was a graduate of Pine Bush High School and went on to continue her studies at SUNY Albany and SUNY New Paltz.  Married in 1958, Carol and Mino lived in Walden, NY and raised 6 children, who were the joy of her life (most of the time).  She was a member of Most Precious Blood Church in

Walden, where she served on the Rosary Altar Society.  She was the matriarch of Sprucegate Holsteins, which she helped cultivate with her family for a lifetime.

Carol was a member and officer of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years, where she and Mino developed life-long friendships that continue to this day.  She worked in the Valley Central Food Service office for over 15 years.  For the last 21 years, she volunteered at Garnet Medical Center, where she was a valued member of the Guest Services staff.  She amassed over 10,000 hours of volunteer service time, and a second family that brought her happiness and fulfillment.

Never too busy to help, Carol embodied the word ‘service’ to her church, to her community, and to her family.  She will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives she touched.

Carlyle G. Darron

Carlyle G. Darron passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at age 95. Beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Doris; sister Helen Schultz (just 24 hours prior) and his parents, Leigh and Eva Darron. Survived by his children Jacqueline Hansen (Roger), Linda Yale (Tom) and Richard Darron (Karen).  Cherished Grandpa to 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grand-children.  In addition, survived by nieces, nephews, and many loyal friends.

Carlyle was born in Walworth and resided there for his entire 95-year adventure through life.  He graduated from the Walworth Academy High School. Carlyle and Doris raised their 3 children at the original Pillar Hill dairy farm on Walworth-Penfield Road. He was a respected dairy farmer, earning recognition for showing his award-winning cattle for 75 years at the Wayne County Fair. He always had ponies, or horses, around the farm and bred Sheltie dogs for 65 years. He was proud to serve his community as Walworth Town Supervisor for 8 years, was a charter member of the West Walworth Fire Department and a lifelong member of the Walworth United Methodist Church. He served on numerous boards throughout the years, including Agway, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Wayne County Soil and Water and the Walworth Planning Board.  He was an active member of the Wayne County Holstein Association.

The family wishes to thank Terri Bell-Sorce for her wonderful care and assistance over the past 3 years.

The 2022 Madison County Fair Dairy Cattle Show, held July 8 in Brookfield, NY was a huge success with over 100 head filling the barns to capacity. Judge for the day was Dan McGarr to evaluate the high quality all day long. Club Show

The O-H-M [Otsego-HerkimerMontgomery] Holstein Club held their annual dairy show on Thursday, July 21st at the Fonda Fairgrounds. Tim Abbott, noted cattle judge from Vermont, placed the 92 outstanding cattle as well as judged 4 classes of youth showmanship. Winning the showmanship competition was Master Showman - Morgan Hodge; Reserve Master Showman-Luke Byma; and Honorable Mention-Justin Wolfe. Twenty-three junior members, ages under 8 to 20 years old, participated in special age groups.

Champions of the Senior Show were won by Elmvue Farm of Fonda and Ovaltop Holsteins of Richfield Springs. Jr. Champion was Ovaltop Warrior Ripley-Red, 1st place Fall Yearling Heifer owned by Alexis Wolfe and Reserve Jr.

Champion was the first place Spring Yearling, Elmvue Sidekick Rhiann owned by Elmvue Farm. Honorable Mention was awarded to Rivercross Farm with the first place Winter Calf, Rivercross Denver Ritz. The Senior and Grand Champion of the Sr. Show was awarded to the first place 4 year old milking cow, Garay Doorman Bree-ET owned by Elmvue Farm; Reserve Sr. & Reserve Grand Champion honors went to the first place Aged cow, Ovaltop Dback Noleta owned by Ovaltop Holsteins; and the Honorable Mention Sr. & HM Grand Champion was awarded to Elmvue Farm’s first place Jr. 3 Year old-Ghislair Sdkck Framboise-ET.

Junior Show Champions were awarded to Alexis Wolfe’s winning Fall Yearling, Ovaltop Warrior RipleyRed. Reserve Jr. Champion went

to Kaylee Byma’s Fall Calf. CollinsPride WR Olivia-Red; and Honorable Mention Jr. Champion honors went to Charlise Canary summer yearling, Canary Sidekick June. In the Junior Show the Intermediate Champion, B&L Diamondback Mystery was also declared the Grand Champion. And the Reserve Intermediate Champion was also declared the Reserve Grand Champion for Lance & Daniel McClure with Pineland Diamond Trinket. Winning the Senior Championships were two entries from Jr. member Stephen Ulman.

Although the number of entries for this year’s show were down from previous years, the quality of the cattle was exceptional. Elmvue Farm was awarded the Premier Exhibitor of the show while Ovaltop Holsteins won the Premier Breeder honors.

NYHA State Picnic

The NYHA state picnic took on a different look this year as members from around the state gathered at Hales Mills Golf Course in Johnstown, to compete in a golf outing and enjoy a BBQ. Justin Kelsey tossed the idea out as something different for the association to involve younger members and 15 teams signed up to test their golfing prowess. Most of the teams

donated their winnings back and the association came out on the positive side. Those folks who didn’t golf enjoyed visiting on the veranda that overlooked the Adirondacks and a delicious catered BBQ. Thanks to Bonnie Bargstedt for coordinating the event.
