From the Editor Wow is the only word that comes to mind when I reflect back on the NY State Holstein Show held in Greenwich in early September. Wow – what a great bunch of cattle that paraded in front of Justin Burdette to evaluate. Wow – what a cooperative and helpful staff to work with at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Anything we needed or asked for, they were happy to oblige. MELISSA HART Wow – what a fantastic attitude from every exhibitor as their smiling faces and positive attitudes shone through the beads of sweat as they worked tirelessly to present their cattle to their greatest possible advantage. I want to commend the NY Holstein Association staff and show committee for backing Covid-19 in the corner and making it possible for breeders and enthusiasts to fulfil their annual, fundamental rite of passage and exhibit their cattle! And one more observation….the wash rack at the Washington County Fairgrounds is exceptional with it’s car-wash wands and a stereo system that encouraged spontaneous ‘Wash Rack Karaoke’ and a dance competition that would make Dancing with the Stars look like a Midwest Polka Party. If you missed this great event, don’t worry, you can relive it in the pages of this issue. We have plenty of show results to go around. Also, the All-NY Contest deadline has been extended and those forms are in this issue. And don’t forget to vote for your favorite NY Cow of the Century online! The voting ends on November 1st. The new feature, “Looking Back with Barrie” was well received, but we had to take a break this issue and we will be back at it for the NovemberDecember issue. Remember, consistency is key in advertising. We have plenty of affordable options for you to advertise, just call me and we can talk about what would be best for your brand and your wallet! I hope your fall harvest continues to be a safe and productive one!

Oneida County Jr Holstein Club October is here, and sadly that means colder weather is on the way. I am not a fan of being cold, but I do enjoy wearing sweaters and drinking hot chocolate, so I am not quite sure how to feel about the changing weather. I am sure that many of you feel the same. I would like to comment Danielle Herrick about the show season this year though. Even though almost every show was cancelled for the year, it was great to see so many of you still putting in the effort to train your animals and show them at the NY Holstein show that was held in early September. County fairs, state fair, and even Expo, I am super excited that quite a few of you were still able to show off all of the hard work that you put into the animals. I personally was not at the show, but I heard from multiple people that there was a huge turnout, so that was awesome. I hope that you all learned something from the show, and I can confidently say that this was an experience that you will never forget. Another point that I wanted to mention is how lucky we all are to have been raised in the dairy industry. I am currently at Cornell University, and one of the classes that I am taking Anatomy and Physiology of farm animals. For those of you who are planning on attending Cornell in the future, it’s a great class, but be prepared for a lot of work. While working through some of the vocab that we need to know for the class, I was reminded for the hundredth time just how much I have learned through working with cows. Not only did I understand a lot of the advanced terminology that was being used, thanks to all of my dairy bowl experience, but I also had a basic understanding of the layout of a cow’s body, thanks to dairy judging and working with my own animals. Most of the other students within the class are on the Pre-vet track, and they are very intelligent people, yet they lack the knowledge and hands-on experience that all of the dairy kids came in with. Now don’t get me wrong, I have to do a crazy amount of studying as well, but at least I have a little bit of a head start. This is only the most recent time that I have realized just how lucky I am to have been raised within this industry. From my speaking skills, to having friends from across the state, and even the country, there is so much that the Holstein cow and the dairy industry has offered me. So as fall descends upon us, take the time to notice just how much you have been able to gain from being a part of this great group. Also, I am not sure what convention will look like this year, if we are even able to have one, but it never hurts to start studying for 8 - NYN October 2020
This October the Oneida Co Junior Holstein Club marks 50 years since it was formed in October of 1970, a couple years before the New York Junior Association was started. We had hoped to be able to celebrate the occasion by recognizing some of the original members and accomplishments of subsequent Junior members, but the pandemic put that to a halt. Many of the members had been showing for several years both at the Oneida County Black and White Show (that’s what it was called back in the day) as well as 4-H members at the Boonville Fair. A half dozen or so families got together to start the club. There was the Cosgroves (Mike, Jerry, Kathleen, and Peter, Tom would join later), the Joneses (Doug, Kathy, and Carol), Riders (Dick, Nancy, and Paul), Roberts’ (Brad, Mark, and John), Thorntons (Diana, Mark, Brenda and Karen), and the vanLieshouts (John, Joe,Paul, Steve, Phil and Pat) as well as their cousin Mike. I hope I haven’t forgotten anybody. Bill and Joan Smith were our advisors. Our original officers were Mark Thornton -President, John vanLieshout- Vice President, Brenda ThorntonSecretary, and Mike Cosgrove -Treasurer. If memory serves me, Mark Thornton was coming off of a successful season where his junior yearling was Junior All-NY and placed well at the NYSF Open show as well as at Harrisburg. The club has kept going for all these years with a lot of hard work from club members and advisors over the years and we now have some third generation members. I would love to hear from any former members and hopefully share old photos or other memorabilia as well as their stories. -Mike Cosgrove

Report
The days are getting darker and it’s getting chilly at night! Everywhere I go I see crops being harvested- corn being CHELSEA HANSELMAN chopped, the last grass cutting of the year being mowed, pumpkins and mums being placed in farm stands, and families going apple picking. The leaves are beginning to turn color and kids have gone back to school (whatever that may look like for your school). After the year we have had this change in season reminds me of all the changes we have had to endure and continue to experience. And, in true farmer fashion, you all continue to persevere regardless of what changes are thrown at you! The New York Holstein State Show in Greenwich NY was a change for all but it was a huge success and I thank all of you that participated and made this such a tremendous show. I recently heard someone say that the show ring isn’t about showing cattle- it’s about finding your friends and finding your family. This was so evident at the State Show, as I saw friends and family from all over New York (and neighboring states) smiling, laughing, and spending quality time with one another. I believe this show was exactly what New York exhibitors and breeders needed- to not only have an opportunity to showcase their finest cattle but to be able to see the benefits of their hard work and enjoy the time doing it alongside fellow New York members. Congratulations to all of our juniors who participated in the state show, whether it was showmanship or the open shows. Also, a huge thank you to ST Genetics and Katie Coyne for sponsoring the junior member events. Katie donated her time and expertise by providing a showmanship clinic to our youth and ST Genetics provided shirts for the juniors and also funded a pizza party before the clinic that was enjoyed by many! Looping back to my theme of change, the New York Spring Dairy Carousel will be experiencing a change. After 45 years of it being at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse NY, the location for the 2021 show is being changed to the Erie County Fairgrounds in Hamburg, NY. The Hamburg location offers exhibitors gorgeous facilities and the association believes it makes the most sense considering the State Show was in Eastern NY. The dates for the Carousel Show are March 29-April 3. Another change that I want you all to be aware of is the New York Breeder’s sale, formally known as the Harvest Sale. We decided to change the name of this sale to spotlight our New York Breeders and really emphasize the quality cattle bred in this state. The sale will be virtual and auctioneered by Dave Rama. animals will remain at their home location during the sale. Consignors have the option to clip and prepare their own animals and provide the association with photos and videos to advertise or the option to contract with the Cornell dairy students to assist with this is available. We have quality cattle, high genomic tested cattle, and large groups available! There are a lot of deadlines coming up so please make sure to mark them on your calendars! The All-NY contest applications deadline was extended to November 15 2020 to give you all time to get photos taken and provide results from the shows you participated in. The 46th Futurity is due November 2, 2020 and I encourage all of you to participate in this event- it is such an accomplishment for those that participate! Lastly, the active and retired breeder recognition and outstanding young breeder recognition applications are due to the office by October 15, 2020. Each club should try and nominate someone from within their county for these awards. We are moving ahead with planning convention and will keep you all informed with what this looks like. Hello friends, it appears we have made it to fall! School busses are rolling (on a little different schedule around here), the air is getting a little more crisp, folks are using the beautiful fall days to make as much hay as they possible can and corn harvest is well underway, if not completed, in most parts of the state. One of my favorite fall activities is attending fall sales. I had the opportunity to attend the Ju-Vindale dispersal on September 19th and it was great to get out and go to a sale. The tent and barns were overflowing with sale goers who were happy to get out and see some really good cows and other breeders. As the sale got underway, it almost seemed like folks were happy to be at a sale and have the chance to buy. Bidders were eager and bidding was fast. Prices were strong throughout the day, with 20 head selling for over $2,000. Animals sold to five states outside of New York, but a good majority of the cattle stayed right here in New York. Breeders supporting breeders is how to keep the market strong for our registered Holsteins. A little promotion never hurts either. Have you given any thought to a regular advertising program in the News? Melissa might cringe when I say this, but it has always been my opinion that advertising programs don’t have to be big and flashy to get results…they have to be consistent! Regular herd promotion will help keep you herd in front of readers. And that’s another thing, don’t be so quick to believe that “newsprint is dead and digital advertising is the only way.” Digital advertising does offer many advantages such as turn around time and in the case of Facebook, cost. However, print media has staying power. Have you ever stopped at your neighbor’s house and feasted upon the stack of magazines next to the kitchen table? They never throw anything out! With magazine advertising, you just never know when someone might pick up a copy and catch a glimpse of your ad. Give it some thought and call Melissa today. Speaking of picking up copies, if you are in Circleville, Ohio and picking up a copy at the North American Open Dairy Cattle Show, then thank you and welcome. Ju-Vindale Dispersal Draws Enthusiastic Crowd By Jason Pullis
Picture perfect weather, an immaculate farmstead and an excited crowd all came together on September 19th at the Reflections of Ju-Vindale Holsteins Sale in Cazenovia, NY. Owners Vince and Juliet Wagner welcomed the crowd to their impressive farm for their final dispersal, culminating 44 years of breeding registered Holsteins. Over the years, 67 EX cows have carried the Ju-Vindale prefix, while the couple have developed at least another 30 EX cows. Creating a lot of pre-sale interest and topping the sale at $10,100 was Arethusa Awesome Aluna *RC, a VG 87 Awesome daughter with 1076 of fat at 2Y and just fresh with her third calf in late August. Her dam was VG by Acme, while the next dam is EX-94 by Goldwyn followed by 2E 95 Ernest-Anthony Aphrodite and then Tri-Day Ashlyn (2E 96-GMD-DOM). After a spirited bidding battle, Anthony Crothers of Pitcher, NY, came out on top with partner Glamourview Farm of Walkersville, MD. Second high seller of the day at $3,900 was Ju-Vindale Pep Speckles-Red, a July 2018 daughter of Windy-Knoll-View Pep-Red. She sold fresh about three weeks and
was backed by a VG 85 Durable and then eight more generations of VG or EX dams from the Derrwyn Miss Special-Red (2E-94-DOM) family. The Kelsey family from Monanfran Farm in Canastota, NY, were the buyers. Selling for $3,400 was JuVindale Snow in July, a daughter of Ronelee Snowmobil fresh 60 days and looking much better than her GP 83 @ 2Y score. Her dam was VG 86 by Baccardi with records to 1271 of fat. Ryan Wolfe of Pine Grove, PA, was the buyer. Dean Jackson of Mt Glen Farm in Columbia Crossroads, PA, purchased five head on the day and led off their list with a VG 88 at 3Y Trump daughter milking right at 100 pounds a day and carrying service to King Doc. Her dam was VG 87 by Ju-Vindale Allstar-Red, followed by an EX 90 2nd dam with 186,000 lifetime. Her April 2020 red son by Dun-Did TT Black Onyx *RC sold for $1,350 to Scott Currier of Clayville, NY. Jackson also picked up the July 2019 Forrest daughter of the Snowmobile mentioned above for $1,625. The sale was managed by Hosking Sales of New Berlin, NY with Tom Hosking selling the cattle and John Burkett reading pedigrees. Assisting in the ring were Dan Hosking, Dan Z. Stolzfus, Jarrod Burleigh and Larry Hill. The sale was expertly clerked by Brenda Hosking. When the dust had settled at the end of the day, 78 milking cows averaged $1,717, 21 bred heifers averaged $1,719, 39 open heifers averaged $953 and 10 half lots averaged $1,130. 20 head sold for over $2,000. Buyers came from five additional states besides New York. A partial buyers list follows.

2020 All-New York Contest Rules 1. Only Holsteins of 87% or greater RHA (Registered Holstein Ancestry) are eligible. 2. Animal must have been owned by a NY Holstein resident member at the time of a show in which the animal qualified. Partnership animals will be accepted providing one partner was a NY Holstein resident member at the time of the show in which the animal qualified. 3. To qualify, animal (or group) must show in a county Holstein show, district show, or be among the top five at the New York Holstein State Show. 4. One switch will be allowed in group classes. 5. Junior exhibitors who meet the qualifications of this contest are eligible to enter. Animals shown by a junior with a non-ownership certificate are also eligible. 6. Recognition will be given for the Best Bred & Owned animal in all individual classes. 7. The All-New York committee reserves the right to reject entries/photographs that do not meet these rules or photo specifications above. 8. All entries and appropriate photographs must be received by November 15, 2020 to be eligible for the contest.
2020 Junior All-New York Contest Rules 1. Only Holstein females of 87% RHA (Registered Holstein Ancestry) are eligible. Owner must be a resident Junior member of the NY Holstein Association at the time of the show in which the animal qualified. 2. Ownership date must be recorded on the animal’s registry certificate as July 15, 2020 or earlier. Animals must have been owned/leased by member at a show in which she qualified. An animal owned by a partnership of Junior members is eligible provided each member meets all qualifications. Junior-Senior partnership animals are not eligible for this contest. 3. To qualify animal must have placed first or second at any local or district, Junior Show, Holstein Show, Open show OR have placed in the top five at the New York Holstein State Show. 4. Recognition will be given for the Best Bred & Owned in each class. 5. The All-New York committee reserves the right to reject entries/photographs that do not meet these rules or photo specifications above. 6.
