On The Cover
Spring 2021 exploded with events that were put on pause in 2020 and people were excited to be out enjoying the fellowship with their dairy fraternity. Inside you will find coverage of the Spring Dairy Expo, the Ohio Spring Sale, the Best of Triple T & Heath Sale, and the Buckeye Breed Builder awards presentation. Our farm feature is RMD Dairy where they have made the switch to robots and said they would do it all over again. This is also our annual membership issue with the membership directory sponsored by the American Dairy Association-Mideast. A big thank you to ADA-Mideast for their continued support of the Ohio Holstein Association and the Ohio Holstein News. This issue will be at the National Holstein Convention for attendees to pick up and enjoy! We look forward to seeing everyone out at the shows and events this summer!
From the Executive Director By Tom Thorbahn
Wow! What a show! Despite the frigid spring day, exhibitors at the Ohio Spring Dairy Expo in Circleville brought out a tremendous group of Registered Holsteins and Red and Whites for judges Ryan and Reichard to evaluate. You, the Ohio breeder should be proud of the great quality of the animals exhibited. A great big “Thank You” to everyone involved in planning the show, the judging contests, the sales held, and making sure everything came together. June 21-24 will be the National Holstein Convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Our fellow breeders in Pennsylvania have worked extremely hard to provide a great opportunity to experience great Holstein herds in addition to the history and culture of the area. As per past conventions, the Holstein USA annual meeting will be held. Director Steve Moff is a candidate for the board of directors’ seat from Region 3 for another three-year term. Junior members can again participate in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, and speech contests. There will be safety guidelines for all participants at the convention. Go to the 2021 National Holstein Convention website for all the details. The Ohio State Fair entry date is fast approaching. Please check out their website for information and entry deadlines. As of now only exhibitors will be allowed on the fairgrounds during the fair, but with restrictions being lifted this may change as well. With summer fast approaching, county fairs and district shows will soon be here. There are great places to visit with fellow Holstein breeders and members to see good Holsteins and watch those 4-H’ers in the ring. Many of the youth exhibitors are the future of our industry. Let’s support them in their endeavors. As spring rolls into summer enjoy the warm weather, the smell of fresh mown hay, that new heifer calf, and get-togethers with famiIy and friends as we enjoy the blessings summer brings.
Ad deadline for the September/October issue of Ohio Holstein News is Sept. 1
CORRECTION In the Rob Bouic story from the March-April issue we made a mistake that caused some confusion. The Holwyn prefix was owned by Rob Bouic’s great grandfather, Frank Bouic, and his sons: Henson, Pearl, John, Fay, and Eugene. In 1956, Rob Bouic’s grandfather, Fay Bouic, took his share of the cattle and started farming on his own with his sons Frank Allen, Don, and Walter. They registered their cattle with the Bouic prefix. In 1996, the Rob Bouic and Art Loschky herds were merged although Frank Allen continued to hold ownership of his cows and use the Bouic prefix for another decade. All of the descendants of the Holwyn and Bouic cattle still in the family are registered using the Arlosy prefix. We apologize for the confusion. M AY / J U N E 2 0 2 1 |

A Message from the President By Bill Indoe
The membership issue has always been one that people keep throughout the year and has historically been the magazine that several breeders wanted to advertise in because it would be available at the National Holstein Convention. Last year, that opportunity didn’t happen but this year, the convention is on and this issue of the Ohio Holstein News is on the table for everyone to enjoy. As you thumb through the pages of this magazine, you will notice Ohio Holstein breeders have continued to improve their genetics and they are in high demand. We have several breeders who have consignments in the National Convention Sale and that is a testament of their hard work and dedication to their breeding program. As most of you know, we are going back to Columbus for our
summer show. I commend those leaders in the Ohio PDCA who carried the heavy load last year to make sure we had a state show in Circleville in August and again this past spring. When may other states were not able to do anything, our group of leaders took the bull by the horns and made things happen. I for one and very thankful for that. Showing has been a big part of Richman Farms and I know for many other breeders throughout the state. COBA is celebrating their 75th anniversary this summer and I want to personally thank them for their continued support of our association and especially our magazine. Also, COBA General Manager, Duane Logan is retiring after leading the cooperative for the past eight years. We at Ohio Holstein thank Duane for his leadership and wish him a very happy retirement. Keep your eyes on our Ohio Holstein website and Facebook page for updates on future happenings. And a big thank you to Laurie Menzie who does a great job of keeping the website updated. See you out and about this summer.

‘We Would Do It All Over Again’
RMD Makes the Change to Robotics RMD Dairy is in Rittman, Ohio, about a half-hour northeast of Wooster, and is owned and operated by Rick Dotterer and his sons Matthew and Mark. What Rick’s father began in the 1950s with a herd of Brown Swiss cows has grown and developed into the 600-cow Holstein milking
herd it is today, while embracing new technology and keeping family at the forefront. With the help of one full-time employee, Ryan Musser, and six part-time helpers who are mainly in high school, Rick, Matthew, and Mark share the bulk of the work on the dairy. Rick is charge of all of the feeding, Matthew looks after the young stock from baby calves to breeding age, and Mark manages the milking herd. The RMD partnership was established in 2009, when the sons bought into the business. As cow numbers continued to grow, a new 6-row freestall barn was constructed in 2015. Three short years later, the first six Lely A4 robots were installed. “We started up in January 2018,” said Mark. “It was freezing!”

The choice to go with Lely was simple: the dealership is six miles down the road from the farm. “We have a good relationship with WG Dairy Supply Center. They
service the robot and take care of the parlor as well.” The double-10 parallel parlor is still used to milk 150 cows, three times daily. For the Dotterers the decision to make the switch to robots was largely driven by labor. “It was a getting harder to find help in the area and we would rather manage equipment then people,” said Mark, adding, “all the new technology of everything is also pretty intriguing.” Often, transitioning to robots can come with its challenges but the RMD herd handled it well, possibly because they were used to a three times daily milking schedule. Patiently working through any of the minor challenges that did arise, he noted, “we would do it all over again.” Although they lost some production initially, the cows bounced back quickly and the herd is currently realizing an average of 28,000 pounds of milk, 1,140 pounds of fat, and 900 pounds of protein. All of the cows currently milked by the robots are in their second lactation or higher, while first calvers are milked in the parlor. With the
The new barn was constructed in 2015, with robots added in 2018 long-term goal of becoming 100 percent robotic in the future, two more Lely A4s will be up and running in June, helping to alleviate some of the pressure on the current robots. “We’ll still continue to milk in the parlor for a while yet,” said Mark, “but eventually all the cows will be milked robotically.” The biggest change he has noticed since going robotic is management style. “We aren’t less busy; it just changes the timing and how we manage things.” When considering advice to share with other breeders who may be thinking about switching to robots, he stresses the importance of having a good team in place. “Establishing a good relationship with the nutritionist, veterinarian, hoof trimmer, and equipment dealer is key. You can’t get hung up on the robots, you still have to spend time with the cows and take care of them.” The addition of the robots on the farm has also adjusted some of the traits necessary when selecting bulls. Although the goal for RMD is to work with animals that have the potential to produce 200,000 pounds of milk, type has its place as well. “We select heavily for high components and milk,” explained Mark,” but you can’t forget about type. As a robot herd we look closely at teat placement and milking speed, but overall we want a functional type animal that is balanced and able to work hard.” RMD Dairy works exclusively with Select Sires to achieve these goals for its herd and participated in Select’s ART program until December last year. “The ART
The next generation - Max & Tess milking in the double 10 parallel parlor
program allowed us to bring a lot of really good genetics into our herd,” he said, “and in turn, we are able to send some bulls to stud.” RMD-Dotterer SSI Gameday was recently released through Select Sires’ NxGen program. Sired by Big Al, a Frazzled son, Gameday is out of Pine-Tree SSI 9839 3412-ET, who is a GP-82 Blowtorch daughter with a VG mammary system. Gameday is currently No. 9 on the Top GTPI list at +3043, with +1242 for milk and +889 NM$. Out of the same dam is RMD-Dotterer SSI Maximus, sired by Rolan, who is currently coming up through the GForce Young sire program at Select and is +2930 GTPI. “The progeny from the Blowtorch cow and her Yoder dam will definitely be influential in our herd in the next coming years,” said Mark. “We’ve flushed several animals from that family already.” In addition to Gameday and Maximus, they are also currently using Conway, Dobbins, Parfect, Top Dog, and Renegade in their breeding program. The Dotterers have recently begun classifying their herd again, scoring 200 ani-
mals this March. While they have always registered, RMD spent the last couple years using the Holstein Complete program provided by Holstein USA. “There is a lot of value in classification by providing data for bull studs to improve the breed and sires,” he noted, “plus it helps us to see what’s working and what’s not in our herd.” While the continued growth of the herd and facilities is important for both Matthew and Mark, their young families could easily provide a fourth generation of Dotterers to dairy farm. Mark’s twins, Max and Morgan, who are juniors in high school, are actively involved in milking and keeping the robots clean. “The kids haven’t made any decisions yet, but they enjoy the farm so far,” said

Ohio Holstein VP Becky This is the second article spotlighting the officers of the Ohio Holstein Women and this issue is about our vice president, Becky McDonnell. I am Becky McDonnell, daughter of Robert & Anna Brill, from District 8 in Lorain County. I started showing the Holstein breed when I was old enough to be in 4-H and continue to hobby farm and show cattle with my husband, Kyle. He and I met at the Lorain County Fair and married in 1990. We started our herd with one animal, a Southwind daughter, when my dad decided to retire from the dairy business in 1991. We then bought cattle at sales and started breeding to build our herd of animals with the K-BEC prefix to show and to have a few for our future children to pick from when they were old enough to show. Many of our original heifers originated from the Quietcove prefix. The K-BEC prefix comes from our names, K for Kyle and BEC for Becky. Prior to our daughters being born, we showed at different fairs around the area and met many of our current dairy cattle friends. Our most memorable winnings were from when the Holstein Association still had bull classes. We had the 1997 Ohio State Fair Reserve Grand Champion Holstein Bull and the 2003 Ohio State Fair Grand Champion Holstein Bull, which became the All-Ohio Winner. When our first
McDonnell
daughter, Morgan (McDonnell) Goss, was able to be in 4-H we had a herd of Holstein heifers to show. A few years later, our second daughter was born, Miranda. Once she was able to be in 4-H, she decided she enjoyed the Jersey breed more, so then we started adding Jerseys to our herd. Today, our herd includes Holstein and Jersey dairy cattle which 50% of our Holsteins are Red & White. I currently work full-time at the Lorain/Medina/Cuyahoga County Farm Service Agency where I have just finished my 30th year and I am also the secretary/ bookkeeper for my husbands business. I have been a Lorain County 4-H Advisor for 32 years. During those years, I have volunteered at the Cloverbud Camp, been a member of the county Advisory Board, served on the county Livestock Sale Committee and organized county Cloverbud Judging. I am currently the Vice President of the Wellington FFA Alumni, Secretary of the District 8 Holstein Club and a member of the Lorain County Dairy Youth Auction Committee. Our District 8 Holstein show is held during the Lorain County Fair. I have helped organize the show, prepared many show programs and help organize the Kiddie Showmanship that is held at the conclusion of the show for the under 4-H age children to participate. I love to see the younger youth show off their animals and have some

fun. Most of them are just excited to get the goodie bag at the end. Why did I become involved in the Ohio Holstein Women group? The first year my daughter ran for Ohio Holstein Queen, 2013, while she was being interviewed, I decided to go to the morning women’s meeting. Since joining, I have attended meetings, reviewed scholarships, been on the Women of the Year committee, and even got elected as an officer. Well, now you know more about our Ohio Holstein Woman vice president. Stay tuned for more in the coming months. We hope these life stories encourage you as a farm woman and Holstein cow lover and owner. Hopefully, when we meet again in person, you’ll want to join us!

Dye, Simpson Awarded the Buckeye Breed Builder Awards they are part owners of Plainfield Farms, LLC in Belmont, Ohio. Plainfield Farms is a 100 percent Registered Holstein herd numbering 110 head. Their BAA is 110.4 with 33 Excellent and 58 Very Good cows. They have won the Purebred Breeder Registry award for the past 15 years with one Gold Medal Dam. Ben’s story started young, growing up on the farm around his parents and grandparents who inspired him to work with registered Holsteins. Ben stated, “I have worked on our farm since graduating high school in 2012. Since then, I have had the privilege to work with many great cow families and continue to develop our herd and genetics.” He added, “Cow families at Plainfield include offspring from Harvue Roy Frosty, Jacobs Goldwyn Brittany, and Tri-Day Ashlyn just to name a few.” The Buckeye Breed Builder Awards were handed out at the Spring Dairy Expo in Circleville. From left: Don Simpson, Danette Simpson, Ben Simpson, Marty Dye, and Hannah Simpson. The Ohio Buckeye Breed Builder Awards were presented on April 1, 2021 at the Spring Dairy Expo in Circleville. Before the naming of Mid-East Spring National Holstein Show champions, Jim Ray named Ben Simpson as the Junior Buckeye Breed
Builder Award winner and Doug Dye as the Senior Buckeye Breed Builder Award winner, posthumously. Ben Simpson is the son of Don and Danette Simpson and together with his wife Hannah and newborn son Brooks,
Ben is active in showing at all levels and Plainfield has bred or developed nine All-Ohio winners and ten Reserve AllOhio winners. Merchandising is important to Ben as he has consigned cattle to several Ohio sales and also the Music City Celebration Sale. Advertising is another layer of their merchandizing plan at Plainfield as they are frequent advertisers in Ohio Holstein News.
On the National Front A huge THANK YOU goes out to the Pennsylvania Holstein Association and their Convention committees. It has been many long years of planning and it is finally going to happen. The schedule is a little different than “normal” convention. Delegate responsibilities will be condensed into one day, Thursday June 24th. The day will start with the delegate breakfast, followed by a candidate forum with about four minutes of introduction for each candidate. A limited question period will take place with the incumbent candidates getting two questions each, then the remaining candidates will have five questions each, all in around robin format. Questions will come from the moderator and the delegates. 14

Ben concluded, “Showing, fitting, and breeding Registered Holstein cows has led me to meet many great people including my now wife, Hannah, and her parents Doug and Marty Dye. Doug was a great additional mentor to me with his knowledge of cows and provided me with generous opportunities to partner with him on cows, one being Quality-Quest Fireline EX-91. Hannah and I continue to work with exceptional cows from Quality-Quest including four excellent cows and numerous good young cows and heifers.” Doug Dye was honored posthumously as the Senior Buckeye Breed Builder Award winner while his widow, Marty Dye, accepted the award on his behalf. Doug worked for and with his dad, Marvin Dye, at Dye Mond Farms prior to buying his new in-law’s farm and striking out on his own with Quality-Quest Holsteins. While at home with his dad, Doug began the tedious task of identifying every grade animal and keeping good records. When the Holstein Association USA came out with the ID Grade update program, Doug had the herd ready to change over to registered cattle. Doug always had an
incredible eye for a nice, registered animal and bought quite a few over the years as well. When the Quality-Quest herd was dispersed last fall, they had 90 Registered Holsteins that averaged 26,660 pounds of milk with a BAA of 106 and earned the Progressive Breeder Registry award for 15 years. Over the Quality-Quest tenure, Doug bred or developed 45 Excellent cows, over 250 Very Good cows, two Dams of Merit and one Gold Medal Dam. He actively participated an exhibited in is local District 1 & 2 show where he also served as vice president of the club. Doug also enjoyed exhibiting at the District 3 show and the Canfield Fair and you would often see him sitting in the bleachers visiting with other breeders and watching his children show. His dream was to one day see his grandchildren show at the Canfield Fair. In addition to local shows, Quality-Quest animals were exhibited at the Ohio State Fair, Spring Dairy Expo and the North American International Livestock Exposition.
lived by as he would never hesitate to consign his best cow or heifer to an Ohio sale. Advertising was important and he enjoyed using his creativity to come up with eye-catching ads. In 2010 and again in 2012 Doug had dispersal sales at the farm and enjoyed seeing others have success with cattle he had bred. Doug and Marty were married for 32 years and he was the father to six children, Joshua, Bryan, Evan, Jonathan, Hannah, and Micah and the Grandfather to nine grandchildren. Doug’s faith was very important to him and he was actively involved within his church community at the North Georgetown Brethren Church. The Buckeye Breed Builder Awards are presented annually and voted on by past winners. It is an award that affirms keen breeding decisions, hard work and dedication to the Registered Holstein cow, Ohio Holstein genetics and the local community.

farm he had seen was next to his holiday house and they only had 10 cows. France has a rather large dairy industry. I did some research and found out their dairy industry offers around 250,000 jobs for them. Also, 60 percent of their dairy cows are Holsteins. Another interesting fact is they call them Prim’Holstein in France. Julian’s favorite part from the farm visit was milking a cow. He even enjoyed tasting the fresh warm milk! Another opportunity I had this past May was speaking to 150 local 4th graders Hello everyone! Hope you are doing about the dairy industry. Almost 50 percent well! The show season is upon us and I of the students have never seen a cow up could not be more excited! I am sure you close or touched one. I talked about the nuare all working hard to get your cattle show tritional aspects of dairy products, the difready for this year’s shows. I always love ferent breeds and various interesting facts how competitive each show is. And I can’t about the industry. They all loved brushwait to see you all! ing and petting the calf that came to visit In May I met a foreign exchange stu- League Street Elementary. One girl asked dent all the way from France. His name is if she could buy the calf while a few others Julian and we got to talking about dairy asked if they could still join 4-H this year cows and he was thrilled to hear that he to show calves. Teaching the 4th graders could come visit the dairy. Once we got about dairy cows was a great opportunity. I to the farm, he was shocked at how many look forward to seeing you all at the district Holsteins we had. He said the only dairy shows and the Ohio State Fair this summer.
During Kayla’s visit to the school, the fourth graders were able to pet a calf. By the time she was done, several students wondered how they could join 4-H and show cows. 18

As summer creeps in, juniors will be out and about competing at district shows and state fair. We want to wish all of the juniors good luck as they have a summer full of shows. Also, congratulations to all of those juniors who enjoyed great success at the spring show in Circleville. We want to thank Jim Spreng of Spreng Capital Management for his generous donation to the Ohio Junior Holstein Association. As we look toward the summer show, we are looking for suggestions for class winner awards and champion awards at State Fair. Please send your suggestions to Laurie Menzie at whitelightholsteins@gmail.com Current thoughts are director’s chairs or decorative milk jugs or cans. See you at the summer shows! Ohio PDCA Awards Couple at SDE
The 2021 Spring Dairy Expo is in the books and may go down in history as one of the chilliest spring shows. Circleville held it's charm as over 600 head of cattle converged on the Pickaway County Fairgrounds and were paraded through the ring on March 31 - April 2nd. Annually, Ohio PDCA recognizes a selfless individual who is dedicated to the dairy industry and has been a valuable asset to the Spring Dairy Expo and the Ohio PDCA. This year the Spring Dairy Expo Award of Honor went to a couple who works hard to make sure things run smoothly at the show. Erica Davis and Jason Robinson were honored for the hard work and are flanked here by OHA President, Bill Indoe on the left and Lee Kohler on the right. Congratulations to Jason and Erica.

Bullseye
Dairymen from around Ohio provide their insider knowledge of what bulls they are using in their herd and what observations they are making about the daughters. Ack-Lee Registered Holsteins, Kristy Ackley, East Liberty, Ohio Sidekick –We like their length, and we also like their dairyness. Unix – We have calved a couple of them in, and we are finding they are really nice-uddered cows that are well-balanced. Tattoo –We used him, but we aren’t sure he will have the width that we need. But they are definitely square with good udders. Delta Lambda – We have used him be-
cause we have seen some super-uddered, well-balanced daughters, but we don’t have anything on the ground yet. Sexed Warrior-Red – He’s a good red bull, he puts on a lot of rib, but we won’t use any conventional semen of him because we have had calving trouble with bull calves. Diamondback- We are still using a lot of him because these daughters are slower maturing, and they make great older cows that only get better with time. Brownhaven Farm, Lou Brown, New Bremen, Ohio On the NextGen list we are using Conway and Parfect. We chose them because we liked their data. We have a couple of Conway calves and find them to be leggy and taller while the Parfect calves are medium in size. Another reason we use them is because they get cows pregnant. Conception rates are a big reason why we use the bulls we use. We use them once, and if they catch, then we will use that bull again. In the Select Sires lineup we are using Captivating, Parsley and Roadster. They all have strength and low SCC. They must have strength, three-quarters of the bulls that
get released are frail. If they do not have strength, they don’t last in the free stalls and we don’t want them. We feel like all we are getting out here are narrow rumps and frail cows and that just does not work. The Semex bulls that we are using are Lambeau because he is high on their Genomax list and Obsidian, he’s high on the TPI list. Although he is not as strong, he has good health traits, according to the data. We have purchased a few Delta-Lambda daughters because they are higher on type and we want that in our herd. We also have a few fresh King Docs, and they have very acceptable udders, some I’d even call fancy. Overall genomics is 80 percent of what we are looking at while the other 20 percent is proven bulls. To make sure we keep different bloodlines in the herd, we like to find sons of good daughters that we might have missed along the way. I will end with a question; if there is a bull with a SCC of 3 or higher, why are we marketing those bulls? In my opinion, that is a huge problem. We have so many other better bulls to choose from, there is no reason to market bulls like that.

The shows will go on
By Barb Lumley
A good friend and I had a long discussion the other day about Holstein history and Holstein happenings. The subject of showing Holsteins came up and we are both looking forward to the upcoming Holstein and county fair dairy shows. One of the things we talked about was the people who criticize the breeders who like to participate in dairy shows and who breed their herds for type. There are those who insist that you can’t breed for type and get high production. I personally bred for type and had cows who made top records, many who produced 200,000 to 300,000 pounds of milk lifetime. I had three cows in my small herd who lived to be 18 years old and were classified Excellent. And I loved showing cows! In the early years clubs were formed for registered Holstein breeders with the support and encouragement of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America. Their purpose was to educate breeders about registered cattle and to encourage them to purchase registered Holsteins. Meetings were scheduled that included speakers, youth activities, picnic dinners and entertainment. The meetings were often held at a well-known Holstein breeder’s farm, giving him the opportunity to show off his herd and the bloodlines he was following. Eventually the decision was made to hold shows at these meetings and also prior to the Holstein consignment sales. Both the Holstein Club shows and the shows held at county fairs were very important in the early years, as it was a means to advertise a breeder’s herd and an opportunity to sell from the herd and especially to sell young bulls. One of the most important results of holding Holstein shows was the opportunity to meet and get to know other breeders. Lifelong friendships formed over the years. Participating in shows became “family affairs”. Youth were involved not only as junior Holstein members but in 4-H and F.F.A. in their home counties and in state fairs. Many of them were and have been friends through their entire lives. Some of those friendships led to marriages! I have so many memories of showing at the Ohio State Fair years ago and I am sure many others do also. You didn’t just move
in Holsteins, you moved in the family! That included the kids, show boxes, show clothes, work clothes, towels, bedding, food, drinks, small refrigerators, chairs, the show equipment and more. In the “good ole days” you stayed for a week. You got everybody and everything settled in, then you went around greeting old friends and meeting new ones (you had already been yelling back and forth with some of them as you worked). For the next few days you concentrated on preparing the Holsteins for the show. And what a show it was in those days! Then the shows were over, the ribbons given out, champions selected, some people agreed with the judge, some didn’t. It was time to visit with old friends, get better acquainted with new friends, look more closely at some of the Holsteins, talk about bulls, learn new things and just relax. For a few years one of the traditions at the Ohio State Fair Holstein show was for the owner of the Grand Champion Cow or Grand Champion Bull to have a party with everyone in the barn invited. Several years ago the owner of the Grand Champion Holstein Bull was a very well- known young breeder from a north eastern district in Ohio. The party was planned, everyone gathered in the area where his Holsteins were tied. There was food, snacks and “beverages”, however there were certain rules concerning which “beverages” were allowed. Everyone was laughing and talking and having a great evening, when someone noticed that an Ohio State Highway Patrolman had entered the building. In those days the Highway Patrolmen were always on the fairgrounds and checked all the buildings. Suddenly blankets were being thrown over ice chests, bales of straw being moved around and everyone was sitting up straight and trying to look “cool”. He stopped at the crowd, spoke to everyone, looked around and started to walk on down the aisle. The owner, who had enjoyed several “beverages”, stopped him and in a loud voice said, “Come on down here, I want to show you my Grand Champion Bull!” He then proceeded to enlighten the patrolman on the winnings of his bull and the complete pedigree! When he finished, the patrolman thanked him, told the crowd to have a good evening and went on his way. The sighs of relief could be heard all over the barn! This is just one of my many, many memories from showing Holsteins. The friends and memories are the most important part of the show ring. My friend, Bill, and I both agree that we feel a little sorry for the people who never belonged to a breed organization, never attended the meetings and picnics, never went to or took part in a dairy show (you don’t have to show a dairy animal, there are other ways to become involved). They and their family have missed so much! Bill and I both would have enjoyed meeting them and hearing about their herd. We also agreed that had it not been for the shows and registered Holsteins Bill and I and our families would probably have never met! Show season is here, the shows will go on! The whites are ready, the kids are excited, the grown-ups look forward to seeing each other and the Holsteins will be beautiful. Come join us!

A herd sire to be efficient should have every advantage from the onset.” Topics discussed in the article were “The Bull Calf ”, “Factors Influencing Growth, Size and Form”, “Age and Rate of Growth”, “Training the Bull”, “Feeding Growing Bulls”, “Legumes Hasten Growth” and “Grain”. “GREATEST LIVING SIRE” Dies at 16 YEARS Fairview Pontiac Beets Korndyke 94943, who for some years has been advertised as “the greatest living Holstein sire” died March 2, 1928 at Wellington Stock Farm, A. and above. In 1927, 5,175 sold with eighteen (18) selling for $1,000 and above. The article was written by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. A letter to the editor from W. Eugene Salee, Kaifeng, Honan, China written March 1, 1928 told of the fate of Holstein cattle that had been shipped to China in the spring of 1926. The cattle were just beginning to get settled in their new home when a war broke out. A battle for possession of Kaifeng occurred the middle of March 1927. The school campus and dairy farm were between the firing lines. With the help of Marshal Chang Tso-lin the best of the dairy herd were saved and moved to Peking. He reported the cattle to be doing well and increasing in numbers and no matter which way the war might go, they would have their chance to make their contribution to the building of a new China. Mr. M.A. Milam wrote from Miami remarking that judging from the reports emanating from China he supposed the cattle had long since been made into “chop suey.” A two page ad in the center of the magazine advertised the Ohio State Guaranty Sale to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 1 and 2 at the fairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio, managed by the Ohio Holstein-Friesian Association, 2029 102nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio, I. D. Hadley, Field Secretary. The Annual Show –Tuesday morning--$145 in Gold as Prizes, Loving Cup for the Champion Female. Annual Banquet Tuesday evening at 6:30.
