Executive Director’s Column . . . Fall is normally the time of year when the ABA puts greater emphasis on promotion and marketing efforts as we head into the national show season and fall sales. This issue of The Angle highlights breeders in a round table discussion who have done a great job with their personal marketing efforts. The Breeders’ Choice Sale is behind us, and the highlights are also presented in this issue. Thanks to everyone who participated in this inaugural event. I encourage each of you to submit an entry in the Ayrshire Yearbook. It has proven to be a great promotional effort over the years. The fee is small with just $100 per animal, or buy two and get one free. This is a great opportunity to promote your breeding program. Past entries in the Yearbook have paved the way for future revenues for individual breeders with live animal and embryo sales. Contact the ABA for more information on the Yearbook. Participation in the tried and true proven promotional projects is great, yet the ability to venture out into something new is very exciting! The ABA will be celebrating AYRSHIRE TUESDAY on December 1st. This is going to be a fun, worthwhile activity for all Ayrshire enthusi-
asts. We’ll enjoy Thanksgiving Day, followed by Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, then… AYRSHIRE TUESDAY! The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association and Promotion Committee is kicking off this event as a fun way to promote the breed, provide quality merchandise, and provide Ayrshire vendors with a platform to sell products for great Christmas gifts. We’ll overtake the ABA website and social media pages with Ayrshire deals that day. There could be Ayrshire cheese, Ayrshire soap, clothing, note cards, semen, embryos, ABA services and much more. If you have things to market on AYRSHIRE TUESDAY, keep watching for more details to come soon, or contact the ABA office directly. As we’re beginning to wind our way down to the end of the year, please take time to review the data your farm is submitting for official testing and classification programs. Be sure your cows are identified as Ayrshire with their complete registration numbers. Without correct identification, this valuable information will not be reflected in your official performance pedigrees. If you are having problems getting this data corrected, please contact the ABA office for assistance. The year 2020 has certainly taught us that complacency can’t be the way forward. Times change, so let’s all commit to trying something new in our Ayrshire promotion and marketing efforts.
Becky Payne
US AYRSHIRE Mission Statement: The purposes of the Association are to maintain the integrity of Ayrshire registrations and transfers, to improve the breed of Ayrshire cattle, to publish a Herd Book, and to maintain other records and registrations as the Association deems necessary or conducive to the best interests of the breeders of Ayrshire cattle.

MARKETING ROUNDTABLE
Marketing Roundtable: BREEDERS SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE Farm Name & Family Information Bear-Ayr Farm breeds and raises registered Ayrshires near Blair, NE. It is operated by Donna & Keith Mertz with their young daughters, Casey & Haley. They are also greatly aided by P&A Ayrshires/KCCK Genetics (the Kruse Family) & Breezy Ridge Dairy (the Hefel Family) who milk our cows. Both Donna & Keith are first generation in the dairy industry, both hailing from the beef industry. Grand-View Ayrshires, Tim & Katie Busch, have no employees and Katie works full time off the farm. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns is operated by Trent and Matt Henkes. Matt is the sixth generation to return to the farm. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC is located in Oconomowoc, WI. Pat and Phyllis are on the farm full-time. Their daughter, Katie, is a high school science teacher and lives and works on the farm when she isn't in school. Their son, Tom, owns an IBA distributorship and helps with crops and cattle. Tom and his wife, Keely, and their two children, Bryn and Blake, live next to the farm and raise some heifers by them. Along with milking cows, the Agnews also raise their own crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, rye, and alfalfa and they also do custom work for other area farmers.
Herd Information Bear-Ayr Farm: All heifers are raised at my farm in Nebraska. My goal is to pick up the calves within one month of birth. They are raised on milk replacer and starter until 6-8 weeks of age varying on time of year and daily intake of starter. Once weaned they are raised in small group pens on dirt lots with south facing loafing sheds for housing. They are fed grain and grass hay. I try to move them to either dairy within a month and a half of calving for transition. They are then calved and milked at either P&A Ayrshires/KCCK Genetics of Dyersville, Iowa or Breezy Ridge Dairy of Epworth, Iowa. Due to poor milk prices and heavy culling I have reduced my milking herd to 10 head currently. Classification totals are 1-EX, 6-VG (2-1st Lact), and 2 G+. I have also been using embryo transfer heavily for the last 2 years and am excited for those animals to begin to calve in. Grand-View Ayrshires: The cows are housed in a tie-stall barn. They are fed a TMR
and a partial TMR during summer when they are grazing. The heifers and dry cows are housed in bed pack in a hoop barn. We have 50 cows, 80 head of young stock and the herd average is 20,000 pounds of milk. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: We milk 65 cows, mostly Holsteins and 10 Milking Shorthorns. We have a 52-stall tie-stall barn and feed TMR to the milk cows. Milking Shorthorns have an RHA on nine cows of 17,580 pounds of milk, 617 pounds of fat and 529 pounds of protein. We currently have three Milking Shorthorn cows over 100,000 pounds lifetime that are still in the herd. Classification totals are 4 EX, 4 VG (3 1st Lactation) and 1 GP. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: Mapleton Valley is home to 120 head of registered Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns. Cows are milked twice a day in a 49-stall tiestall barn. When the weather doesn't include a chance of snow, the milking herd has access to a freestall barn bedded with sand and freechoice haylage and corn silage as well as rye bales. All younger animals and dry cows are on pasture. Milk cows are fed high-moisture corn and a protein mix in the barn twice a day and eat haylage and corn silage at a feed bunk. In the winter, cows are kept in the barn the majority of the day and are fed dry hay along with the grains and silage. Currently, there are 38 Milking Shorthorns on test and they average 17,000 pounds of milk (onethird of the herd are in their first lactation).
What is your breeding goal and what sires do you use to help achieve that? Bear-Ayr Farm: I utilize a combination of proven and young sires. I try to minimize inbreeding and am always looking for outcrosses. My goal is to maintain over 90% purity or higher on my matings. When doing matings I look for a balance of type and production. In my situation of having my cows milked on other dairies, without my cows minimally covering their feed costs I cannot justify asking others to milk several “pretty cows for me just to show. I cannot expect others to lose money feeding, housing and milking poor producing dairy cows for me. Grand-View Ayrshires: I breed for long legged, deep bodied cows that last a long time. I am currently using Tuxedo, Reagan, Viking, and Ringer. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: I focus on high type from prov-
en cows families. I also try to look for outcross genetics to minimize inbreeding. This spring we have had four Foster heifer calves and one Jericho. Foster brings the outcross genetics I am looking for, being sired by an Australian bull. A few bulls I look to be using this year are Rockstar, Wildside and Gianni. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: We strive for cows that can milk, look good, and are built to last. We have been increasing our use of polled genetics and A2/A2 bulls. We have also been testing our own animals for both of those genes as well. Milking Shorthorn purity is also important to us, so we use mostly full herdbook or EXP sires. Right now, we have got some impressive daughters by Julius, Rockstar, Zumba, Red Ruben and Anticipation. We are currently using those bulls as well as Delux, Alrite-P, and Secretariat-P.
What kinds of marketing tools do you currently use to promote and sell genetics? Bear-Ayr Farm: We use Facebook consistently. It is free, quick and can connect instantly with numerous individuals. Secondly, digital ads that we have done with The Angle have been amazing. They have reached an entire new market by being posted on the Dairy Agenda Today website. It has enhanced the exposure of our Ayrshires outside of the Ayrshire community. Grand-View Ayrshires: We mainly use our Grand-View Ayrshires Facebook page. We will be doing some print and other advertising for our upcoming sale next year. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: We primarily use Facebook and The Angle. Facebook is quick, instant and free. I still feel it is important to advertise in The Angle to reach every Milking Shorthorn member. I have had proven luck selling cattle from my ads in The Angle. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: We use a combination of print ads (both in The Angle and other farm papers), digital ads (on the AMSS classified page on the website), and social media posts, both as an individual and through our farm page.
What are your marketing goals? Do you want to create awareness, sell animals directly, sell animals through an online sale? Bear-Ayr Farm: Our marketing uticontinued on page 27

Executive Secretary’s Report ...
Hello Fall! The swing in temperatures as we move into fall is nothing new here in Wisconsin. While I can deal with the change of seasons, changes in daily life keeps me on my toes -- between in person and virtual meetings, we now are dealing with a hybrid model to learning. It all takes a little getting used to. We received word that the show in Louisville will go on - with some new rules. Please take time to read through those rules and direct any questions you may have to the staff at the show. By the time you received this Angle, there may be changes to the show, just like there are daily changes with everything else in the world of COVID. Your National Board has been meeting
on a regular basis since our summer meeting. There has already been some progress – from finding solutions to ongoing issues and committees meeting together to move the breed forward. For years, AMSS has been dealing with reporting issues when it comes to Milk Production reporting – which in turn is causing issues with classification. Due to the inconsistent correction process of the past, discussions with individuals that have a clear understanding with the corrective measures have led to the following conclusion. All incorrect records will be directed to the AMSS office. This will include all records of Milking Shorthorns on test. We will be working internally to assist in the correction of the records not only in our office, but also will be working with the DRPCs and CDCB to correct errors in all areas needed. Genomics has been an ongoing process. We recently found out that the lab was sitting on samples that were not processed. The correction of this issues will be resolved shortly. If you have submitted a bull for registration this year, you will be receiving information on how to submit a sample for genomic testing. To remind everyone, we are only sharing the results of the testing with the breeders. The collection of this information is to be used to assist our breed with compiling a good genetic base. We will continue to work on these solutions as well as anything else that
comes our way to bring the best services to our membership. Together, we can move the Red, White and Roan forward!

database computer system, having bulls for the future and making our society successful. I want to thank both Brenda and Kathy for the great job they are doing and continue to do. In addition, the Articles and By-laws committee has been working with an attorney, for months, on changes to our current practices. The AMSS needs to adopt these new by-laws and articles to be in good standing with the state of Wisconsin. Once these documents are sent to you, please
review and mail in your vote as soon as possible. Our society can be strong with the help of all members by registering, transferring, classifying, advertising, and making donations. It takes a full membership working together to better the breed we love. Let us keep the Red, White, and Roan a strong breed for the future.
Marcia Clark
Welcome to fall. It has certainly been an atypical year: events and shows have been cancelled, working from home and meetings via Zoom, wearing masks, and six feet of social distancing. As dairy farmers, we must continue to appreciate all the good things in life, including our health and well-being. As we look toward the remainder of 2020, let us also keep the following information in mind: • Registrations are being offered at a special rate for everyone to catch up. If you need assistance, please contact the office or a board member for help. • We are currently having monthly board meetings, looking at committee reports and reviewing other items as needed. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to Brenda or a board member. • We continue to review issues like the Mission Statement: To recognize and welcome the diversity of the Milking Shorthorn as a unique feature of our breed, distinguishing it from all other breeds in the United States. To encourage each breeder to use all the Society programs which will benefit them individually and respect the rights of other breeders to have a different goal and to use different programs. To administer the Society to effectively use the information generated by the breeders to aggressively market our breed.

Happy Fall! As we begin our journey into harvest time there is a quote that comes to my mind. “Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.” ~ Og Mandino. This quote has meant a lot to me in my years as a junior member and in my time as queen. As most have, I have been a junior member mainly my entire life. The dairy community is the sun that my world revolves around. From planting this simple seed in the early parts of my life I am now beginning to harvest the crop that it has produced. At this time last year, I was beginning my run towards the national show season circuit. I was incredibly nervous for all of the traveling, meeting new people, and having the opportunity to talk to people from around the world about our wonderful breed. Having my first national show all the way out in Pennsylvania I did not know what to expect going to a place I had never been before. Fortunately, my family was extremely supportive of all of the traveling. My mother was able to attend my first show with me out in Pennsylvania. If it weren’t for her my traveling experience would have been extremely different. She was able to assist me with everything from making sure I was where I needed on time to taking pictures for me and even helping me in talking to as many people as possible. Being a part of the national show circuit has always been a dream of mine. It puts my two favorite things together: cows and traveling. From all of my traveling and our current situation in the world, the dairy community has taught me how to always be flexible. Even though part of the national show circuit has had to take a pause, I have still made the best of everything. With the support of my family I have been traveling to as many shows as possible, and with the hope to add more to my list come this fall. With best wishes,

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT NATIONAL JUNIOR VIRTUAL HEIFER SHOW
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 National Heifer Show, the American Milking Shorthorn Society held the first virtual show! Because the show was virtual, they took advantage of the opportunity to select an international judge for the 2020 virtual show Michael Tuhan, of Riversleigh Illawarras served as this year’s judge. Michael has been honored to judge the Illawarra breed at Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Toowoomba Royal Shows. In addition to these events, he also served as official
for combined breeds at the New Zealand Dairy Event, Dairy Shorthorn’s at Newmarket-Nottinghamshire County Show in the UK and enjoys judging Holsteins and Jerseys at local shows. His best farming memory was winning grand champion at Royal Melbourne Feature show their first year that he and his wife Carly purchased the family farm. Michael enjoys seeing progeny of his own bulls have success internationally such as Cotonhall Tuck Clarissa. The bulls of choice for his herd are Venvale Prince, Llandovery
Jinny’s Empire, Silverleigh Maxima, and Treeton Pimp & Pingerly to name a few! Michael’s favorite family cow is Tulip who was one of their very first Illawarra’s purchase in the early 90’s. Tulip went on to be 10 EX3E and was grand champion at Melbourne Royal Show in 2012 & 2013. The American Milking Shorthorn Junior Society sends a sincere THANK YOU to Michael Tuhan for serving as this year’s judge!

MILKING SHORTHORN
A Trip to
r e b m e Rem By Greg & Marcia Clar k Preparing for our trip to Australia, the biggest question was “do we go or not?” since forest fires were popping up all over the country. We were down to the last week and the breeders in Australia told us to come, that it wasn’t as bad as the media was stating. Warren Doecke said “Life still goes on; we can’t stop living life because of the fires.” Our travel plans changed for the first leg of our trip, due to fires south of Sydney. We finally arrived in Sydney after a 17 hour flight and enjoyed the local sights that night. The next afternoon we flew to Cairns, and met up with Greg English. He drove us to Malanda, where we stayed with Terry & Ursula Tidcombe (breeders of Wallumlands Sunstorm, Supreme Champion at IDW, 2015 & 2019) and enjoyed wonderful dinners and hospitality. We spent two days Touring Queensland with Greg English and Terry Tidcombe, visiting historic sites with rides up in the mountains and down narrow laneways. We saw a number of waterfalls and lake areas that were land marks for them. The views were unbelievable and are places we would have never seen without our tour guides. We visited many herds as well. The Glenview Australian Reds is an organic herd, utilizing wonderful irrigated, lush pastures. They were using Lucky Strike valuing the polled genetics with high components. Casey Clarke, a young Illawarra breeder, is milking 270 head. She had many tremendous older Illawarra cows a lot of nice two year olds, with a special one by Wallumland Blush’s Savird. Our final stop in the Malanda area was Eacham Vale Stud owned by Greg & Bronwyn English and family. We saw some impressive cows, including Eacham Vale Erin 4 (Intermediate and Supreme Intermediate Champion at Royal Brisbane, 2019), Eacham Vale Precious 7 (Senior, Grand Champion and Supreme Champion at Royal Brisbane, 2019). Sires currently in use are Silverleigh Manhattan and Silverleigh Motivator. Then we were off to Melbourne on the next leg of our trip. We spent some time walking around the city and enjoyed seeing old churches and the farmers’ market. Sarah and Raymond Parker, of Glencliffe Farm, were our next tour guides taking us to the Shepparton area, home of International Dairy Week. We were able to visit their herd and saw a number of Glencliffe JP Jedi (Treeton Pingerly son) daughters. Jedi’s dam, Glencliffe Joyce 468, is a twelve year old cow with a tremendous, large frame. While in the area, we visited the Riversleigh Stud where Michael Tuhan showed us his wonderful herd of 150 head. Michael is using Myrtleholme Hunt and Glencliffe JP Jedi currently and our favorite cow of the visit was Riversleigh Scarlet Dorris 2 a seven year old and the class winner at IDW. The USLGE booth at IDW was visited by many Illawarra breeders.

We spent a lot of time in the booth with Kim Billman and Jodi Hoynoski enjoying the show. The judge for Illawarras was our first tour guide Greg English from Queensland. We were impressed by both the cattle and the breeders at the show and we will not soon forget it. Our next tour guide, and hosts, were Warren and Cheryl Doecke. Warren was at IDW for the show and took us and Amelia Manderfield by car (towing a pop up camper) to Murray Bridge. Along the way we stopped at the Llandovery Stud of Tony Hayes where they milk 450 Illawarras and Holsteins in a rotary parlor and are using mostly AI bulls. They had just been awarded Supreme Interbreed Junior Champion with Llandovery Guses Freda and Reserve Intermediate Champion with Llandovery Vision Joan at the IDW Illawarra show. There were numerous standout cows in the herd all with outstanding udders. We were able to stop in Mount Gambier to see the Blue Lake. This is the water supply for town coming from a volcanic complex over 4000 years ago. The water was a blue as you can imagine and it was amazing to see this historic site. The next stop was Braelee Stud, of David & Adam Kuhl, who are milking 170 Illawarras and over 2,500 sheep. We viewed all the cattle and saw how the sheep shearing was done. Treeton Pimp daughters were the standouts in this herd. We were able to view the cows as they went through the rotary parlor for morning milking at the Doecke’s Springvale herd. We made a list of all the great cows we would see at pasture later in the day. Then we headed to a river boat with the local group of Illawarra breeders and Amelia. It was a beautiful day for lunch on the river and conversations with breeders interested in US genetics. We spent the afternoon walking through the Springvale pastures inspecting cows a bit more closely. They have numerous paddocks for intensive rotational grazing and seeing the red, white and roan spread across the acres was quite a view. Doecke’s concentrate on longevity and milk production on 270 head of milking Illawarras. We saw quite a few family members of Springvale Thelma 49th and some promising daughters of Springvale Prides Anticipation. We also saw young daughters of Kuszmar Stroker Ace and Circle B A Lucky Strike PP on the farm. Ian and Julie Mullen, Glenbrook Stud, have lots of great Illawarra’s among their 330 milking cows. Brealee BP Dairymaid 2 was Grand Champion at Adelaide Show in 2019 and looked really good in her barn clothes. She has a General son that would be 66% in the USA and could be of interest in the future. We walked the pasture and saw many big framed cows with great potential. Geoff and Rosemary William milk 500 nice uddered cows at Treeton Stud. They are the breeders of Treeton Pimp and Treeton Pingerly, two poplar bulls being used who both have well uddered daughters. The herd has used Zumba, Logic and Ironman in the past and are interested in more US bulls in the future. Treeton Scarlet Zumba is a new bull which ST Genetics is making available in the US. We enjoyed dinner and discussion that evening with a group of Illawarra breeders in Murray Bridge. Our last farm visit was to Daivd & Jake Altmann, Blackwood Park Stud where 80 Illawarras are milked in the 500 head herd. Glenwood Park Buttercup 232 could be a potential bull dam as she is a two time national milk record holder with a pedigree full of long living productive cows What a whirlwind trip with good cattle, beautiful scenery, interesting history, and great breeders of the Red, White and Roan! We enjoyed our travels and the people we met along the way. This trip would not have been as wonderful without the kindness and generosity of all the folks who guided us, chatted with us and opened their homes to us. We cannot thank any of you enough for the hospitality!

TAX INFORMATION
By Pat Erickson
Pat Erickson is a manager with CLA, which is recognized by Accounting Today as the eighth largest accounting firm in the country. He has more than 10 years of experience in public accounting, and spends nearly 80% of his time working with farmers in CLA’s agribusiness practice. CLA has more than 120 locations, many in smaller communities close to where farmers operate. I often get calls from clients and prospects asking for a quick idea about taxes they will owe based on a specific transaction, their level of income, or other scenarios they encounter. The facts and circumstances of each situation typically play a large role in how these questions are answered — until we have more information, the response is usually “it depends.” In addition to a complex tax code that changes rapidly, there are many different types of taxes and instances when a taxpayer might encounter them. It is important for farmers and agribusinesses to understand how they will be taxed.
Income tax
There are a few key bits of information to keep in mind related to personal income taxes. • Federal income taxes range from 0% to 37% and are calculated based on filing status and level of income. • Tax rates are generally different based on the filing status chosen by a taxpayer: married filing jointly, married filing separately, single, or head of household. • Only one filing status will apply to a taxpayer in any given year. • Factors considered in determining filing status include marital status as of December 31, the living arrangements of the two spouses, and whether there are dependents. • A surviving spouse is allowed to file as married filing jointly in the year a taxpayer passes away. This is considered a more favorable filing status than the others.
16
• If the surviving spouse has dependents living with him or her, he or she may be allowed to file as married filing jointly for additional years. It is a common misconception that individuals who cross into a new tax bracket have all their income taxed at a higher rate. Income tax is a graduated system, which can be described as steps on a staircase. Individuals are taxed at one rate until they reach the top of that bracket, and only income above the top of that tax rate is taxed at the higher rate on the next step. Example: Jessica Smith, a single taxpayer, has wage income of $35,000. In 2019 filings, her first $9,700 is taxed at 10%. Her income from $9,701 – $35,000 is taxed at 12%. All types of income are subject to income tax, including wages, interest, dividends, and farm income reported on Schedule F. Ordinary income passed through on Schedule K-1 from a partnership or S corporation is also subject to ordinary income tax.
Long-term capital gains tax
The long-term capital gains tax results in the taxation of income from capital gains at a lower rate than the ordinary income tax rate. Capital gains are treated as the top layer of taxable income (e.g., for someone with taxable income of $100,000 and longterm capital gains of $20,000, capital gains are considered the income from $80,000 $100,000 for tax rate purposes). If a taxpayer files as married filing jointly and has taxable income of $80,000 or less in 2020 ($40,000 for single and married filing separately), long-term capital gains are taxed at 0%. From $80,001 to $496,600 of income, a married taxpayer filing jointly is subject to a 15% long-term capital gains rate. Taxable income above $496,600 for those filing as married filing jointly is subject to a long-term capital
The Angle | September/October 2020
gains rate of 20%. Beyond the 0% long-term gains rate, the levels of taxable income for single and married filing separately are different. Long-term gain simply means that the asset was held for longer than a year. Short-term gains on assets held one year or less are taxed as ordinary income. Raised dairy cows require a holding period of more than 24 months to qualify for long-term status. Land that has appreciated in value and has been held for more than a year prior to a sale is subject to preferential capital gains rates. If equipment is sold or exchanged and has appreciated in value (which is less common), the portion of the sales price that exceeds the amount originally invested also receives preferential treatment. Recapture of depreciation upon the sale of an asset or when the one-year holding period is not met does not receive preferential treatment.
Self-employment tax
Income reported on Schedule F is subject to self-employment tax and is calculated separately from income tax. Certain types of income passed through on Schedule K-1 from a partnership are also subject to self-employment tax. For spouses that file jointly, each must combine all sources of their self-employment income. The self-employment tax is then calculated separately for each spouse. Since self-employment tax is calculated annually, it is also important to consider the timing of reporting income. For example, from a self-employment tax perspective, breaking even on Schedule F for two consecutive years has a significantly different tax impact than reporting income of $10,000 one year and a loss of $10,000 the following year. In the breakeven years, there is no self-employment tax assessed. In the second scenario, although the same amount of total income over the two-year period is reported, the taxpayer is subject to self-employment tax in the year
TAX INFORMATION in which $10,000 of income is reported. A self-employed individual is responsible for the full 12.4% Social Security tax and 2.9% Medicare tax (in a typical employee-employer arrangement, each is responsible for one-half of these amounts). Finally, individuals are allowed a deduction on Schedule 1 for half of their self-employment tax owed.

Other taxes
Two other types of tax that occasionally come into play are net investment income tax (NIIT) and alternative minimum tax (AMT). NIIT is a tax on investment income for those with adjusted gross income in excess of $250,000 if married filing jointly ($200,000 if single and $125,000 if married filing separately), and is calculated at 3.8% of income above these thresholds. Very few taxpayers are subject to AMT, due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which changed itemized deductions and increased the standard deduction for all filers.

AYRSHIRE
The Legendary
David Patrick By Becky Payne
W
e should be doing lots of great things in this year of 2020, yet the pandemic keeps sidelining us from activities we enjoy. Like shows and sales. Like World Dairy Expo. Like honoring the legendary David Patrick of Woodbine, MD as the National Dairy Shrine’s Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder. This prestigious honor is presented to an active, progressive dairy breeder whose expertise in managing a dairy herd is a model for others. David Patrick has been in the Ayrshire business for 79 years! His path with the breed started at the young age of 11. He remembers their county extension agent in the late ‘30s to early ‘40s was an Ayrshire man named Warren G. Myers. All dairymen in their county were introduced to the Ayrshire breed by Mr. Myers. In 1941, David’s father purchased two Ayrshire heifers to
18
give him a fresh start in the purebred dairy cattle business, and so marked the beginning for Maple-Dell Ayrshires. Family brings great pride to David and Ann, his wife of many years. They raised seven children, have 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. They operate Maple-Dell Farm with sons Mike and Denny and grandson Derek. David and Ann don’t miss a beat, and assist with milking daily. David also does all of the Ayrshire matings for Maple-Dell. Today around 165 Ayrshires and Holsteins are milked in a double-eight parlor, and roughly the same number of heifers are raised. The cows are fed a TMR and housed in free stalls with sand bedding or a bedded pack. Maple-Dell has been enrolled in official herd production testing for 60 years and have been classifying for 40 years. Participating in registered dairy herd programs and living a life of service has been important to the family. David served on the ABA’s Board of Directors for many years and one term as president. In addition to many industry-wide honors, the Ayrshire accolades to David and Maple-Dell Farm are significant. Highlights include: • ABA Distinguished Service Award, 2002 • ABA Master Breeder Award, 2010 • 14 Constructive Breeder Awards • Over 100 EX cows • 17 All-American and 18 Reserve All-Americans • Numerous bulls in AI service • Many cows ranking on the Elite CPI list Two favorites carrying his prefix are Maple-Dell Hi-Kick Sweat Pea and Maple-Dell Zorro Dafourth. Both have made an impact on the Ayrshire breed. “Sweet Pea”

was EX-91 3E and was the Ayrshire featured in the Purina Mills “Dairy Breeds of North America” painting by Bonnie Mohr. She was a national show grand champion and dam of the well-known AI bull Maple-Dell Soldier. “Dafourth” was EX-95 3E, was a national show grand champion, had two sons in AI (Drew and Diego) and one grandson (Dixon) in AI. Four generations of this family have ranked on the Elite CPI list. David has mentored and influenced many people over the years. Maple-Dell Farm provides at least 20 lease calves to youth every year. This commitment is possibly the result of the appreciation he has for his own mentors. Part of what makes David so special is how much he values others. He recently reflected on the Ayrshire influencers in his life. John Dalton of Hartland, WI has impressed David with his promotion of the Ayrshire breed over the years, and he considers him a good friend. He admired the leadership and administration abilities
AYRSHIRE
Ann & David Patrick of Jim McConnell of Wellington, OH. The late Ralph Shank Sr. of Hagerstown, MD inspired David with his love of the Ayrshire cow, and they had a great friendship for many years. With more than six decades working in the AI field and with the Ayrshire/Holstein mix at Maple-Dell, David has worked with many breeds and has literally seen it all. He considers the Ayrshire to be a competitive and beautiful cow, and has noticed an improvement in the breed’s disposition over the years. He says, “We have more issues with the Holsteins at Maple-Dell than our Ayrshires.” The Ayrshire has long been noted for her longevity, and David feels that production in those mature cows has now increased significantly. The improvements in the Ayrshire breed over the years are notable for him, particularly production and type. David feels that Burdette has been an influence on that big picture, especially as cows mature. He also thinks Kellogg made an impact for type. David is astute with his understanding that people see things differently. He reminisces that Ralph Shank Sr. bought a cow 40-50 years ago, and people just couldn’t
understand why he did. That cow ended up being a great foundation cow at Palmyra Farm and was a good asset. Speaking of assets, whenever there is a Maple-Dell animal in a sale, everyone looks twice. This is definitely because of the pride the Patricks have in their breeding program and their philosophy on selling only what they’re proud of. Type is always of concern because people like to look at pretty cows. “Breeders should try to buy and sell the good ones because it helps the breed when you can bring new people in,” explains David. “Not everyone can afford World Dairy Expo champions, but you can still buy solid Ayrshires for a reasonable price.” He also feels that Ayrshires are selling as well as, if not better than, Holsteins right now. His all-time favorite Ayrshire cow was “Bonnie” at Palmyra Farm because of her high production and type. He said, “If you’re into production, you have to have good feet and legs so they can get to the trough for high production.” The seasoned dairyman’s advice to young breeders is, “Start out with a balance of production and type. Be selective in your breeding program, and don’t be afraid to ask people for their opinion. Make sure to develop, and never stop developing, your management skills. In your life, you’re always going to meet negative people. As long as you believe in yourself and your program, you should just let the negativity roll off your back.” You can’t leave an interaction with David Patrick without feeling good about something! This interview was done with the help of his daughter Rhonda; and like always, we had lots of laughs. We asked David if there was anything unique about himself that others might not know, and he

answered that his faith is number one. This wasn’t news as anyone who knows David at all would say he’s lived life letting his light shine. He did reveal a fun tidbit. He recently found his 1947 school yearbook. Under his name, it said he was known for being friendly and for his leadership ability. His horror was listed as Holsteins! David feels very humbled to receive the Dairy Shrine Award, saying “I know a lot of great dairymen across the country who are just as deserving and have never gotten the award.” When asked what keeps this 90-year-old youngster going every day, David says “I feel blessed. I feel great. All of the people I have worked with and surrounded myself with have made me the man I am today. I’m going to keep going as long as I can. I feel better mentally and physically to be active and to do what I can to help other people.” David retired this past summer from Select Sire Power after 65 years of service, and is still inseminating cows for dairy and beef producers in the area. He has earned respect far and wide in the dairy industry, and his humble personality has made him the subject of numerous feature articles over the years. The All-American Dairy Show paid tribute to Maple-Dell Farm in a story as one of six herds who had participated every year for their 50th Anniversary celebration. David was crediting the All-American show’s outstanding showmanship contest when he said, “You see the true character of a person in the show ring. It takes a true man to stand at both ends with grace. And while I admit it is more fun at the top, I’ve stood at both ends and try to do so in good character.” This good character is the legend that is David Patrick.

Imagine getting started in the Milking Shorthorn breed by chance and already having the opportunity to impact on our breed. This is exactly what happened when Matt Borchardt, South Beloit, IL, was given the opportunity to purchase his first Milking Shorthorn back in 2012. Matt was looking to bring another breed into the operation at Family-Af-Ayr, a very well-established Ayrshire herd in Caledonia, Illinois. Fortunate to grow up milking and exhibiting a herd of registered Ayrshires, at county, state and national shows with his family, Matthew has been able to experience many show highlights, one Grand Champion, and one Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo along with numerous All Americans. He, along with his wife Kayla and two children Eli and Jolie, are now having good fortune with Milking Shorthorns. Originally looking into adding Jerseys to the Ayrshire herd, Matt received a phone call from Mark Fisher about a young springing heifer, Truelea Jack Lotto, an Oceanbrae Diamond Jack daughter, who needed a new home. “Lotto” goes back to Mi-San Acres Lola, a cow that in her own right has impacted the Milking Shorthorn breed, which is something that interested Matt. Lotto turned out to be a good purchase for the Borchardts. Classified at EX 90 with a 91-point mammary, she has made numerous records over 20,000 pounds of milk. What is even more impressive is her 1106 pounds of fat produced in 305 days during her 3rd lactation. But it was Lotto’s first calf, Natzke’s Prince Layla – P that really got them fixed on the red, white and roan. Sired by Spungold-R Prince of PA ET, this polled late September fall calf was named Supreme Champion Heifer at the county fair and was first place fall calf at the Illinois State Fair the following summer. She stood in the middle of the pack at the World Dairy Expo that year and the Borchardts were hooked. They have focused their breeding on production and type while including polled genetics. Layla-P herself is EX 90 with records over 24,000 pounds of milk – a great combo of all three of those traits. When selecting bulls, the emphasis continues to be
on udder quality, type and production. Two cows in the herd are homozygous polled and heifers the Borchardts have bred have done very well in the showring and the county and state levels. Even though the Borchardts have not been involved in the Milking Shorthorn breed for long, their list of highlights is growing. Breeding Circle B A Lucky Strike PP and getting him into AI is at the top of that list. They started by having him tested for homozygous polled and A2/A2 at UC Davis and then reached out to AI companies to gain interest. Reaching out to the AMSS Genetics Committee gave Matt more information about the breed and recommendations on how to market the bull. The last few years, they have focused on purchasing embryos from high profile cows to try to diversify the genetics in the herd. With all the great cow families in the breed, Matt said “he couldn’t pick just one” to buy from. He would love the opportunity to find a top Junior or Senior three-year-old that is “getting it done in the barn and the show ring” to bring in some great genetics. He feels this year is a difficult one to do that with the cancellation of so many shows. Matt is looking forward to being part of the AMSS genetics committee to help improve the breed for the future. He is looking forward to getting more involved as his kids grow and can show. Matt credits his success in the Milking Shorthorn breed and the dairy industry to his entire family and everyone who helped him chase his dreams. (Matt may not have known this before, but it was just a chance in 2012 that allowed Matt to purchase Lotto. Lotto was housed at a farm just outside of Fond du Lac Wisconsin. The family raise some great quality heifers but did not have a milking herd. They had contacted a local Milking Shorthorn breeder to see if she was interested in purchasing this heifer to add to her herd. Timing was not great with two young girls at home and she passed on the chance to buy Lotto thus giving that ability to Matt Borchardt. Seeing the success of this cow family and the impact the Lucky Strike has had, I often wonder if I would have had the same success.)

Ayrshire Juniors Dream Big & Take A Chance “Dream Big & Take A Chance” was the slogan for this year’s National Ayrshire Youth Calf Raffle. What a dream it was! With lots of effort put forward by the National Ayrshire Youth Committee, more tickets were sold this year than ever. Tickets sales were fast and furious in the week leading up to the big event. Several state Ayrshire clubs purchased blocks of tickets with the idea of using the calf as Thanks to Tim and Katie Busch for a benefit for their own states. their donation of “Dollie”. The drawing was held live on Facebook on July 4th, and the winning ticket was purchased by the Wisconsin Junior Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. Upon winning the calf, the Wisconsin Jr. ABA announced a grant program for their junior members to apply for the opportunity to own “Dollie”. The contest announcement stated their hope was that the recipient will remain involved in both the breed and junior associations as well as strengthen and nurture their passion for the Ayrshire cow. “Congratulations to Ainsley Noble of Lancaster, WI for being selected as the recipient of the WAJA Calf Giveaway,” stated McKen-
zie Ullmer in the winner’s announcement. “We were truly impressed by Ainsley’s knowledge and experience within the dairy industry as well as her eagerness to introduce an Ayrshire to her family’s farm. We are confident in her ability to develop her new calf, Dollie, and excited to see all that she accomplishes with this special opportunity. We know Dollie is in good hands!” Thank you to Tim and Katie Busch of Cecil, WI for their generous donation of this outstanding spring calf. Her pedigree certainly inspired much of the ticket sales! MARKETING ROUNDTABLE continued from page 7 lizes all three of the above mentioned. I have sold to first-time Ayrshire buyers and I like to follow-up with those buyers after the sale. I try to do this to find out if the animal has been bred and to whom, if they have calved and what they had, or to answer any questions the buyer may have. If it is a first time Ayrshire buyer I like to ask them if they have any questions about becoming a member of the Association or any other services the Association offers. On private sales I also offer to send in the transfer of the animal myself to the Ayrshire office to help maintain that animal in the registry. I have sold animals or embryos directly, through public sale and through online sales. My main goal is to educate buyers to the Ayrshire breed and to offer a product that will be desired and sought after. Grand-View Ayrshires: Our marketing goals through our farm Facebook page is to make people aware of our genetics and to sell animals directly to buyers. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: A combination of all three. For one it is important to support the breed by advertising. The added bonus is making people aware of your genetics and selling a few along the way. In Milking Shorthorns I feel it is important to be able to market your genetics so you have opportunities to bring new genetics into the herd. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: Our main marketing goal is to sell high-quality Milking Shorthorns to a variety of buyers. We've consigned animals of all ages to the Wisconsin State Sale, many of which have sold to young breeders just starting out in the breed. We've also consigned animals through our national sale as well as online. When the bull pens are full, we also advertise in local farm papers, and many of those bulls have been used to add components to offspring through cross-breeding.
Of all your marketing tactics, which one has been the most valuable? Bear-Ayr Farm: Facebook has been, as it can be done immediately from anywhere. It has an amazing reach, can be updated several times, and I can tag numerous people which then shows the post on their Facebook page. I also like that I can involve my young daughters as they can take numerous pictures with my cell phone and I can post them. I can also respond immediately to potential buyer’s questions. With my cell phone I can do Facebook post anywhere and anytime. Grand-View Ayrshires: I have had great success marketing with our Facebook page. It’s great being able to flush a cow for
embryos and post them for sale in the morning and have them sold by the end the day. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: Facebook, simply because it is quick, easy and instant. You can do multiple posts and updates as you sell genetics or have new ones available. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: We have always been about creating full pedigrees. Cows need to look good (proven by classification and show winnings) and milk (we are on DHIA) and last (not just one milk production record). We consign and privately sell animals that have a combination of those three things. A history of marketing these types of animals as well as using social media to promote these genetics has helped to keep sales consistent.
What advice to do you have for farms looking to ramp up their marketing tactics either in traditional media or online? Bear-Ayr Farm: Don’t be afraid to put animals, embryos, or your accomplishments on Facebook or in ads in The Angle. Take good pictures, this may mean taking lots of pictures on your cell phone to find the right ones. Get all different angles of your animals and also videos of them on the move. Make sure your animals are clean and in a clean environment when taking the photos and videos. Always use a picture on your posts on Facebook. Pictures draw attention and readers to a post. Consign your best to sales. This may seem like common sense; however, it is VERY important. The first animal I ever consigned to a public sale was Bear-Ayr Burdette Ray EX-94 2E before her four-year-old year. She went on to calve after the Iowa Spring Sale and be named Reserve Grand Champion of World Dairy Expo that year and the next along with other accolades. Lastly, keep your ad concise, whether online, on Facebook, or in print media. Hit the key points, don’t get wordy, like this answer just did, or people won’t read the entire thing. Grand-View Ayrshires: Set up a Facebook page for your farm. It is easy, and it is free. Post something on a regular basis either for marketing or just general cow pictures or other things going on, on the farm to keep people engaged. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: Get good quality pictures of your animals. It doesn’t have to be a professional photo. Make sure the animals are clean and in a well bedded area and get them in their natural habitat. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: Advertise what you have - either in print or online. Take pictures (either barn shots or get
professional pictures taken) and share them. Keep thinking about how to improve that next generation of cattle through matings. Seek out those looking for cattle near you and respond quickly and take the time to find out what people are looking for and answer questions.
How does being a member of a breed organization support your marketing goals? Bear-Ayr Farm: Being a member of the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association has aided me in several areas of marketing. It has allowed me to have a greater return on investment. I have a lower rate for registering my animals, lower rate on transfers and several other items than a non-member. By registering my animals they are more valuable in certain market areas. Being a member has allowed me to meet so many other members and thus network. My membership fee is a MUST in my operation! Grand-View Ayrshires: Being a member of the ABA is another available tool for marketing with ABA-run sales, their media sites, and print marketing. Henkeseen Holsteins & Milking Shorthorns: By being a member, if the National Office gets calls about someone looking for genetics in your area, if you are a member they can direct them to your farm. Also outside people can look up our membership list and then contact your herd. Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC: The most valuable program to us offered through AMSS is the EXPRESS program. At a yearly per-cow rate, registrations, milk recording, and classification are bundled together. It combines the things that are so important to us at creating that complete pedigree and benefits the breed. The AMSS website has a free classified page, on which we have sold several animals. From Katie Agnew: I am in charge of the AMSS semen tanks. Members can put in semen at a very reasonable rate, and we are currently at over 30 available bulls. Since most studs are moving away from carrying a variety of Milking Shorthorn semen, the society tanks get more semen out there much quicker. The list of semen is updated frequently, and both shippers are out for delivery almost weekly. I get several inquiries a week on semen, and the quicker I can get back to people answering questions, the more semen goes out. It does take time to keep it organized and put posts out on social media about available bulls (including pictures) as well as talking to people on the phone, but it is appreciated (by both the buyer and seller) and often leads to sales and future sales.

AYRSHIRE HIGH LACTATIONS
ABA Hosts
Palmyra Predator B Ruthless, VG-89 Max 2-03 Proj. over 25,000M Dam of high-selling embryos The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes for all of us this year. It has been challenging to sponsor in-person cattle sales with so many restrictions, and the ABA Marketing Committee took the opportunity to try something new. The Breeders’ Choice Sale was developed and went online with Cowbuyer, a key partner to the ABA for several years. Bidding began August 27 and completed with the final strike of the auctioneer’s gavel on August 29. There were 45 consignments, and 23 of them met or exceeded the reserve set by the consignors. Cowbuyer’s Aaron Ray Tompkins explains that online sales are a numbers game, especially if you publish a reserve on each consignment like was done with the Breeders’ Choice Sale. “If you can start at a price low enough to let momentum build, it will get potential buyers interested without scaring them off,” he says. In his experience, Tompkins says that anytime you have reserves set, a sale that sells 50% of the consignments is a success. He also adds that a key factor to the success of online sales if having quality photos and videos for every consignment. “I’m happy with how it went,” said ABA Marketing Chairman Damian Ullmer. “It was nice to have enthusiasm and interest to promote the breed. It was a group effort to make it happen, and we should all be proud. We can learn something from this sale for the future.”
Sunny-Acres TSB Poetic-ET High selling heifer
The high-selling live animal was lot 24, Sunny-Acres TSB Poetic-ET. This Burdette summer yearling was purchased by Delaney, Kalli and Cooper Barber of DeWitt, IA for $3,200. Her dam is an EX-92 2E “Dreamer” with records to 29,000M. She was also named grand champion of the 2019 NY State Fair. The next dam, an EX-94 3E “Poker” daughter has records to 31,520M. “Poetic” was consigned by Greg Evans and Kathy Mahon of Georgetown, NY. Tami Mueller and Allison and Abby Adrian of Cuba City, WI purchased lot 6 for $2,700 from the Emery Family of Sullivan, WI. Vallowhill Kings Mistress is a summer yearling sired by Bear-Ayr Distinct Kingsire. Her dam is VG-87, and the granddam is none other than Sharwards Calimero Megan, EX94 3E, 4x All-American with over 139,000M lifetime. Lot 27, Dominaire Bevitari-ET, sold for $2,700 to Kadyn Gibson and Tre Wright of Eminence, KY. “Bevitari” is a fresh Jr. 3-yearold sired by “Double Barrel”. Her EX-91 dam is a 2x All-American nominee with records to 29,460M. She was consigned by Jessica Peter and Garrett Schmitt of Melrose, WI. The IVF embryos out of “Ruthless” are going to be a RINGER, literally! Aaron Lovstuen of Decorah, IA purchased them for $1,150 each and selected the mating to Blue-Spruce Ringer. We’ll all be anticipating these potential calves as World Dairy Expo champions claim both sides of the pedigree.
RINGER is out of De La Plaine Bingo Stinger, EX-94 2E. She was grand champion at the 2019 International Ayrshire Show at WDE, was Unanimous All-American 5-Year-Old in 2019 and has production records to 4-03 365D 30,144M 4.3% 1298F 3.1% 935P. The dam is Palmyra Predator Ruthless-ET, VG-89 @ 2-09. She is projected to 25,517M 3.9% 1001F 3.0% 744P at 2-03 and was the 2019 Unanimous All-American Spring Yearling. The next dam is the world reknown Palmyra Berkely Ruth-ET, EX-94 2E. Ruth is a former #1 Elite CPI Cow, 3x Unanimous All-American, and 2x International Ayrshire Show grand champion at World Dairy Expo. She has a high record of 3-10 323D 32,060M 3.9% 1256F 3.0% 960P. The embryos were consigned by the partnership of Kurt Wolf, John Cannon, Matt Mackinson and Mary Faber. The Breeders’ Choice Sale was a great way to test the waters in doing a completely online sale. There were several great benefits for consignors, such as a much lower commission fee. Expenses were reduced as the ABA didn’t have to hire a sale crew, and consignors had no trucking expense getting animals to a sale location. Health tests were done after the sale to only meet the requirements for the state of final destination. There is also great potential to reach a wider and more diverse group of buyers. We’ll look forward to hosting another Breeders’ Choice Sale in the future.

MILKING SHORTHORN SIRE SUMMARY
April 2020 Sire Summary Base Change By Ellie Fleming Every five years, all breed proofs go through an adjustment to better reflect the current cattle populations in the United States. For each base change, we look back to cattle born five years ago and take the average of their traits, (i.e., how they are performing and how they look today). Those current averages are then compared to the numbers of the last base change, cattle born 10 years ago, and we shift the values of all traits to reflect that new average. So, the point of doing a base change is that a trait value of 0 should represent the exact average within the current population. For example, the April 2020 base change for Milking Shorthorn Milk was 36. This means the average milk production of the Milking Shorthorn breed has improved by 36 pounds more than what is was five years ago. So, when the proofs for the April 2020 Sire Summary were calculated, every single bull had 36 pounds subtracted from his milk proof. Some of the highlights for Milking Shorthorns in this base change include an 0.63 improvement for Productive Life. All breeds saw big improvements in this area, ranging from 0.12 to 1.86 increased PL. For
our type traits Milking Shorthorns saw an improvement on almost all traits by 0.1 to 0.2 points. While Milking Shorthorns did see an improvement in Milk (36 lbs.), and Fat & Protein (2 lbs. each), it is concerning when compared to the improvement in other breeds. All others breeds saw an average increase of 312 pounds of milk. The next closest breed was Guernseys, showing an improvement of 150 pounds. Guernseys, Ayrshires and Brown Swiss all saw a range of 10 to 16 pounds improvement in components compared to our four-pound increase. Although on par with the current trend in the industry, we saw a big decrease in Daughter Pregnancy Rate of -0.53. Holsteins made only a small improvement and all other protein breeds decreased, ranging from -0.12 to -0.99 off of DPR. Unfortunately, we were the only breed to show a change in the wrong direction for Somatic Cell Score, with a change of 0.02. This may sound like a small number, but SCS is a small range and all other breeds held steady or made improvements. Each base change brings an opportunity to step back and review our breed as
a whole and ask ourselves if we are happy with the direction we are going. Is our performance going to be conducive to the continued success and survivability of the Milking Shorthorn Breed? And what do we as breeders, and a society, want to do about it? *All information from the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding article “April 2020: Genetic Base Change” by H. MILKING SHORTHORN MINUTES
Summer Board Meeting
June 29 & 30, 2020 • Beloit, Wisconsin Meeting was called to order by President Marcia Clark at 8:11am on Monday, June 28, 2020 at the Hampton Inn, Beloit, Wisconsin. A quorum to conduct business was reached. Board members Bill Bartlett and Scott Cailteux were not in attendance. Guests present include Michelle Upchurch and Eddie Hartfield. Motion passed to approve agenda with an addition. Motions passed to approve minutes from the following meetings, April 28th, June 10th, June 18th, and June 19th. President Marcia Clark read her Presidents Report. She focused on how the work of the board supports the Red, White and Roan. Executive Secretary Brenda Gudex spoke about the work the National Office has accomplished over the past year and how programs will move forward. Standing Committee Reports Articles & Bylaws The board reviewed the drafts of both the Articles and the bylaws as presented by the committee. Numerous changes and additions were discussed. These changes will be passed onto the Article and Bylaws committee for discussion. A timeline of events in order to bring the new documents to the membership was discussed so that we can bring our Society up to date. Credentials Committee There was no report from the Credentials Committee, but it was noted the amount of work the committee did to assist in the unique situation for the voting this year. Breed Outlook The committee was asked to review the Express Program. The committee provided breakdown of cost savings for the current examples given on the form. When reviewing current Express Herds, the current breakdown for program does not meet our membership needs. The board discussed why breeders are not signing up for the program. The committee will review the program so that it fits better within our membership needs. One of the reasons breeders sign up for the Express Program is because of the Milk Production recording. This program helps our members to be eligible for National Milk Awards. Unfortunately, we have discovered numerous issues with data going into our database as well as our inability to pull the correct information out of the database to
use.
The board will make it a top priority to review not only the database, but the information going into it as well. Convention The National Convention Committee will provide an update on the Convention at the December meeting. As of right now, convention planning for Wisconsin, Illinois and Oklahoma/Arkansas/Texas are all on track. There are not many anticipated changes to the convention schedule for 2021. When the December report is given, we will review the Auctioneer and Sale crew pricing. National Sale No updates for 2021 at this time. All those who consigned in 2020 were refunded the consignment fee. The board discussed the outstanding animals from the 2019 sale. Brenda will be sending them a letter to request payment again. Type/Classification We have been receiving reports of incorrect or missing information on pedigrees regarding classification scores, especially multiple E records. Brenda and Susan have been working on updating the website rules to reflect the rules that have been changed. One of the rules that was missing was the verbiage regarding the bull classification change. There was also verbiage that mentioned “not considering the stage of lactation on the linear descriptive traits.” Susan would like the board to make a motion to make our rules meet the current classification standards. Motion passed to take out any mention of “not considering the stage of lactation” on the linear descriptive traits and there be no max score for bulls. International Committee Report given on the February trip to the USLGE meeting and the many ideas shared at that meeting that could benefit AMSS. A list was shared for potential travel and where to allocate funding. The committee would like to work on a checklist for future AMSS travel and the creation of a calendar and timeline. Because of the way funds are allocated, an application process for participants is not allowed. The board discussed creating a listing of individuals best suited to travel on behalf of AMSS. Feedback in relation to US genetics moving outside the US as well as those genetics that could potentially enter our herdbook was shared
Percentage information was discussed. International markets are looking at percentages. We do not share this information internationally, even though we promote our bulls on an international market. Recommendation was shared from the committee to bring foreign representatives to the US during our convention to meet with AMSS breeders for a collaborative effort of genetics transfer. What we may be looking for in the US could be very different from what foreign markets might be looking for. A listing of cows that could be potential bull mothers for exportable bulls was shared. These cows are backed by milk and components. Data was pulled from reports used to find Hardy Cow Award recipients. Motion passed to have a spreadsheet on percentages of the bulls from the Bull Book to share information internationally. Motion passed to pay membership dues of $5500 to USLGE for 2021. Genetics & Sire Asset Management The committee also discussed percentages and the consensus from the committee is that our current herdbook levels should not change. Bulls were presented. Treeton Scarlet Zumba should enter the herdbook as an EXP due to his sire, Mapleton VLY J Zumba being a full herdbook bull. Gorbro Joans Jazzy - Current AMSS policy would bring this bull into the herdbook as a GI. With the significant interest in this bull, the committee recommends that he be entered into the herdbook at a GI2 level. This would increase his usage due to the fact that a GI2 x with a full herdbook would be an EXP level. Motion passed to follow the committee recommendation of adding Gorbro Joans Jazzy to the AMSS herdbook at a GI2 level. Brenda will provide the Genetics committee with a listing of bulls registered. Recommendations of bulls will go both to the International committee and the Genetics committee. Bull Book The committee did a lot of target marketing to solicit advertisers in the book itself. One of the biggest changes this year was the need to mail the books out due to the cancellation of many of the National Shows. There will be reimbursement for the cost with the funding from USLGE funds. An electronic copy will be uploaded to continued on page 36

MILKING SHORTHORN MINUTES continued from page 35 the AMSS site. Semen Sales Process for semen sales was discussed. The board discussed payment for the semen sales – not only for the actual semen, but the shipping cost as well. Motion passed to bill for AMSS semen sales as soon as the order is placed with a minimum shipping fee of $50 added to the bill. Semen must be paid for prior to shipment. With the balance for shipping due on return of the tank effective July 1, 2020. Juniors The juniors are moving forward with a virtual junior show with entries due July 1. They have held elections for their board which will be announced soon. The Junior board has asked last year’s queen to extend her reign, they are finalizing this. Junior applications were accepted and are being reviewed. No applications were taken for the Australian trip as the 2020 trip has been postponed. Futurity/All American All entry fees have been reimbursed for Futurity 65 which was to be held in 2020. The 2021 Futurity will now be number 65. The All-American contest was discussed as well as the 2020 National Show schedule. Motion passed to add no new national shows to the 2020 show schedule. Shows added to the show schedule will be considered as regional shows. All open shows that submit information for all placings, judge information and follow all AMSS qualifying rules with no limitations, will be All American qualifying shows. All placings will be eligible for the All-American contest. Animals must be nominated with professional photos. Motion passed that for any junior qualifying shows, all placings will be eligible for the all-American contest. Milk Production The committee recommendations were discussed. One of the recommendations was to move the award format to lactations rather than ages levels. The board discussed the current awards and it was decided not to change the age levels of the awards. A Yearling in Milk award was added to this year’s award. The board will ask the committee to go through the awards to see if some of the requirements could be changed. Also discussed was the information being used to determine award winners as well as who qualifies for awards. In order to qualify you must either be enrolled in the EXPRESS program or the Milk Recording program. That will not change. Native and Dual Purpose

Correspondence was shared from the committee based on the recommendation of the board at the December meeting. Also shared was a report from 2016 in which the committee provided information regarding minimal participation in the AMSS breed programs. Historical Preservation A historical display was worked on for this year’s national convention. Coordination of an office visit was put on hold due to the pandemic. The board discussed the binding of the journals. This has not been done in sometime. The board will discuss this further in the future. Finance Scott Cailteux joined the meeting via phone to review financial information. Scott presented changes to the 2020 budget due to the changes in revenue and expenses because of the COVID19 pandemic. At this time, even with the changes made, we will most likely need to pull dollars from an investment account at year’s end. We did receive PPP funding to cover two months of costs. Website, Promotion & Publication Motion passed to discontinue advertising in the GRAZE publication for 2020 and to discontinue the booth at the GRAZE conference. The board discussed the website and challenges with the site. Brenda will be in contact with a website developer to give us some options moving forward with the site. The Angle was also a point of discussion. We are currently working on a late summer issue due to the lack of material for a May/June issue. The board brainstormed ideas for the next issue. We discussed fewer issues going forward. This will need to be discussed when the next contract comes due. The Junior National Heifer Show was discussed in its virtual format. Other virtual shows are popping up as well. Motion passed to include virtual shows as qualifying shows for the 2020 All American Junior and Open contests. Clarification on needs for the USLGE funding was discussed. Mexico and Japan have come to the forefront as potential trade partners. A large group from the US attends the CNOG show in Mexico and it was discussed to use this group for partnerships. Motion passed to send an AMSS member to Mexico with the CNOG group. Motion passed to invite Rob Kite and Michael Tuhan to the AMSS National Convention in 2021 using USLGE funds. The National office will keep a listing of those interested or recommended for travel. The 2019 Bull registrations listing will

be shared with both the international committee and the genetics committee. This listing along with the packet shared by Kylie on the cows will be a great starting point for discussions between the two committees. A committee will be put together to work on database concerns. Brenda shared with the board a plan for month meetings and regular board reports. Motion passed that starting in July we would have standing board meetings. Brenda will get out moratorium information to our membership. Motion passed that the AMSS will not knowingly publish any information that is known to be inaccurate. The Endowment committee was discussed. The AMSS board presents an ask to the Endowment committee for special project on a yearly basis. Motion passed to ask the Endowment Committee for $2500 to fund projects. Motion passed to end the regular session of the board meeting at 1:11pm. Reorganizational meeting President Marcia Clark called Bill Bartlett, outgoing member of the board to thank him for his service and release him from his duties. Scott Cailteux was excused during the regular meeting. Eddie Hartfield and Michelle Upchurch were welcomed to the Board. Norm Magnusson, Executive Secretary for the Brown Swiss Association visited with the group and assisted with the election. The following were the results of the elections: President: Marcia Clark Vice President: Susan Lee Executive Committee members: Tom Landrum, Jim Foss, Marjorie Kuszlyk Motion passed to hold the Winter Board of Directors meeting in Beloit on December 11th and 12th. Meeting adjourned at 2:12pm.

At this continued on page 37
MILKING SHORTHORN MINUTES continued from page 36 time, Louisville is still planning on the show going on. We are still waiting on final news about the type conference. Mikayla Krause spoke about a classification issue. This is an ongoing issue that the office is working on with the assistance from the committee. The board discussed committees in depth. Marcia Clark along with Brenda presented a plan to rework committees. Meeting adjourned at 8:21pm.
August Meeting Minutes
The August Board of Directors meeting was called to order by President Marcia Clark on Tuesday August 25th. A quorum to conduct business was recorded. Motion passed to approve the minutes from the summer board of directors meeting. Motion passed to approve minutes from the July board meeting. Committee Reports Article and Bylaws The final changes will need to go back to the lawyer to have those changes incorporated into the documents. There was follow up discussion on the use of the Endowment funds being put into
these documents so that it covers all of the aspects of the society. Education, History, Promotion Proposals being accepted for website work. Angle issues were also discussed. The delay of the Angle continues to be an issue. The board discussed options to be able to make the Angle a more timely publication. Endowment The committee approved a donation of $2500 to the AMSS for items such as the website, mailing of Articles and Bylaws, and binding of old publications. Type & Classification Reporting issues were discussed. Much of it is coming from information missing or incorrect DHIA reports. AMSS needs to work on assisting our breeders to correct the information. There are issues at all 4 of the DRPC. The committee will work on getting this under control by December. International Committee Invites have gone out to Rob Kite, Michael Tuhan and Ryan Barrett for convention next year. The claim for the bull book has been submitted to USLGE. The group continues to work on researching potential bull dams. Genetic Committee
Pending a negative HCD test, plans for importing the Jazzy bull will move forward with an initial import of 2,000 units. Jody Nus will be importing the semen and will work with Katie in getting some in the AMSS tank and shipping. National Shows/All American Discussion was had regarding the All American Contest. The consensus was that since the board already decided to move forward with a contest with revisions, no more changes would be made. AMSS was contacted to see if AMSS would be able to fund an associate judge at the National Show in Louisville. The board discussed options to share for a cost effective associate. Other Business The board discussed the fees that we are charged for every credit card transaction. There is currently a policy for using a credit card to pay for purchases at the National Sale. The board discussed if this could be used as an overall policy. Meeting adjourned at 8:09pm

MILKING SHORTHORN
* * * CALLING YOUR ATTENTION * * * The staff wants to ask breeders to do us a big favor and it won’t cost anything. There are a large amount of cattle on test sheets that are misidentified. The association receives 700 plus error notices yearly from the testing centers. Many registered animals are identified by DHIA or vet ear tags and not registration numbers. Most of these records we can do nothing with. They need to be fixed on the owner’s end first. This is a problem when it comes to recording production records. An example would be, “I registered a calf and when I got the pedigree there were no production records on the dam.” That starts with a misidentification with your testing center. It is also a problem when it comes time
to classify. When a breeder’s herd inventory is downloaded for the classifier, the animals listed by tag numbers do not show up on the classifier’s handheld. The registration numbers must be hand entered. If the owner doesn’t correct the ID, it will be wrong the next time. An example from a recent classification tour would be this: “She has to be in the program, we’ve classified her 3 times already!” Well, that may be true, but she was identified incorrectly on the test sheet every time; and she was not corrected with the testing association. The society is not responsible for identification on the test sheets. That needs to be done by the owners, the milk tester and testing center. It is not only the registration
number of the cow herself that causes this. It could be sire ID, dam ID or as simple as birthdate or Breed ID, (AY, BS, GU, JE, MS vs. HO, XX). Please take time to check your test sheets or herd management programs for identification errors. This will allow us to better provide you with accurate data.
