ing advocacy, marketing and research and development for the dairy industry is receiving cautious approval from stakeholders.

But some farmers have raised concerns how one organisation spanning the whole industry can provide effective advocacy.

UDV president Paul Mumford says a new national body to represent the dairy industry would be beneficial after further consultation with farmers.

The Australian Dairy Plan Committee’s Joint Transition Team released a report on Wednesday, January 29, recommending a new model called NewCo B, to restructure the way the dairy industry operates.

JTT chair Shirley Harlock said the JTT’s analysis confirmed a view that current industry institutional arrangements were no longer fit for purpose.

“I encourage everyone in the industry to read the report carefully and to lend your support for implementation of a new, modern organisation that would enable our great dairy industry to prosper nationally and internationally into the future,” Ms Harlock said.

Mr Mumford said the report suggested what a unified model would look like, but more work was required in order to assist farmers.

“It’s now been put to the state dairyfarming organisations to open the discussion up with our members and farmers to identify what the farmers are wanting out of a united national voice, and whether it’s an appropriate model,” he said.

Mr Mumford said feedback submissions to the Australian Dairy Plan committee from industry members were due on Saturday, February 29, and that the period of time for engagement was too short to get the project right.

South-west Victorian dairy farmers say Australia’s grassroots farmers are again being ignored in industry restructure plans.

The Wannon branch of the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria says the industry would be better off keeping its current advocacy structure rather than adopting the JTT plan.

Vice-president Bernie Free said while the branch would meet in the next week to formulate an official response to the proposal, his initial thoughts were negative.

“It’s a worse proposal than what’s already out there; we might as well just stay with what we’ve got,” Mr Free said.

The branch had proposed a united national organisation called Dairy Farmers Australia, which aimed to bring together policy, industry advocacy and R&D, led by farmers.

“Our proposal had farmers in control; farmers are answerable to farmers all the way up our tree to national level,” Mr Free said.

“This JTT proposal is like DA hijacking the whole advocacy, R and D and education side with no grassroots control and no grassroots mechanism to challenge the national body to justify what its doing.”

Patrick Salway, who died alongside his father as they tried to save their southern NSW farm from fire, has devastated his wife.

"I love you now, I love you still, I always have and I always will," Renee Salway said.” I will see you again Patrick, my best friend.

“Hope you are up there ‘fixing things in the stars tonight’.”

Patrick, a young father and dairy technician, and his 63-year-old father Robert Salway were found dead on Tuesday by Robert’s wife.

“The men had stayed back to save the family home in Wandella, about 10 km northwest of the gutted township of Cobargo.

“Two amazing men from such a beautiful family," Kristy Wren posted online on Tuesday.

“Patrick, you were always the life of the party.

I will always cherish the memories I have of you.

“Meanwhile, tributes piled up for volunteer firefighter and expectant father Sam McPaul, who was killed fighting fires on the VictoriaNSW border.

The Holbrook man, 28, was killed on a property at Jingellic, east of Albury, on Monday evening after the truck he was on was hit by winds

The 10-tonne truck was flipped on its roof and Mr McPaul died at the scene.He’d been expecting his first child in May with his wife Megan, whom he married in 2018.The McPaul family had lost another "champion bloke", Brayden McPaul said.

“We are all shattered and can’t believe that it is really true," he posted online."Sam, you will be truly missed and have gone down a hero trying to save the things you care about.

“Jen Hyde said she was absolutely devastated.

“Still cannot believe it, you were just at my house on Sunday holding my Olly and giving me hugs,” she said.

Glenn McLeod remembered his "dearest friend" by posting a photo of the pair at Mr McPaul’s wedding, saying Mr McPaul was due to come around for a New Year’s Eve roast.

“I can’t believe you’re gone,” he said.

An emotional Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said “hearts were breaking” at the RFS for the McPaul family.”

“I don’t think the comprehension has set in yet, of the enormity of the tragedy and the loss,” Mr Fitzsimmons told reporters.

Mr McPaul is the third firefighter to die since December 19, when a tree fell into the path of a tanker carrying young fathers Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O’Dwyer, 36, near Buxton.

Fodder fears for fireimpacted dairy farmers

The Smith family, dairy farmers at Brogo, NSW, and volunteer firefighters, turned out to answer the call from Brogo Rural Fire Service at midnight on December 30.

Brad and daughter Samantha donned their firefighting gear and went to help their community.

Deirdre and the remaining two daughters, Emily and Jessica, were needed at home to put out spot fires.

Later that morning, Emily and Jessica brought the mixed herd of 150 Friesian and Jersey-cross cows in for milking, amid burning embers and smoke.

“You couldn’t see your hand in front of your

face,” Deirdre Smith told Dairy News Australia.

That began a regular cycle of call outs, patrolling regularly for ember attacks and farming in darkness and smoke for the family and their broader community.

“We’ve been patrolling day and night,” Mrs Smith said.

“On January 4, the sky went dark at 3 pm until 6 pm on the following Sunday.

“We were able to keep milking and Bega Cheese was able to pick up as normal, every second day.”

The herd cell count has risen to 326 000 in the past week, for which they expect to be penalised.

Two weeks after the bushfires hit the region around new year, calves have been dying from respiratory distress.

The family’s self-replacing herd is managed

for year-round calving, so there are always young calves being raised.

So far, six heifer calves, ranging in age from two-days-old to one-week-old, have died from respiratory distress.

“The smoke is very thick and there’s no escape from it,” Mrs Smith said.

“They went into respiratory distress and there was nothing the vet or we could do to save them. It’s an ugly way to die; it’s very distressing to watch.”

The dead calves were part of their future production system.

On top of that, the ongoing four-year drought has impacted irrigation and consequently silage harvest.

“We had to stop irrigating months ago because the Brogo dam is down to 12 per cent

capacity,” Mrs Smith said.

“We’ve only been able to make 170 silage rolls; we normally make 400 rolls.

“We’re still holding on to that silage, because it’s for the milking herd and when we start feeding it out, they’ll need four rolls a day and that’ll disappear quickly.

“We’ve normally stopped feeding before now, but we’re still hand feeding everything. We’ve got four days of hay in the shed.

“We’re worried about where will we get fodder for winter?”

Being caught up in the Shoalhaven fire complex, which has halted road access outside of the region, means the herd is unable to be fed purchased grain, because it hasn’t made it to the farm yet.

Fodder deliveries are also being held up.

Advocacy under a new plan

The new draft industry plan is an ambitious attempt to address concerns expressed in almost a year of debate and consultation.

Developed by the Joint Transition Team, for the Australian Dairy Plan, the proposal has discarded the idea of separate representative and R&D bodies, in favour of a combined organisation.

Stakeholders now need to ask themselves, (and the team, if possible) does this address the central issues raised in feedback generated last year?

One of the recurring themes raised in farmer meetings was the need for more vigorous and targeted advocacy.

The feedback uncovered a belief that the fragmentation of advocacy had led to poor outcomes in achieving policy changes.

The irony is that many farmers have opted out of membership of advocacy bodies, resulting in fewer resources for those organisations and as a result, delivering less impact on political leaders.

Is that withdrawal because of dissatisfaction at outcomes delivered in the past, or simply because membership is seen as a superfluous expense?

The challenge under the new plan is to bring together all sectors of the industry; farmers, processors, research and development scientists and marketing people, when occasionally the interests of these parties have been different.

How would advocacy work if there was a repeat of the Murray Goulburn claw-backs?

It’s true that issues like this don’t come along every day, but handling a problem with potential internal conflict would require mature, cool heads and a well developed process.

This is acknowledged in the new report: “The organisation will need a strong internal capacity to resolve issues where there are divergent interests within the industry.”

The Transition Team has opted for a one-stop shop approach in the new model, which should have some advantages in terms of representation, but there are some potential down-sides if the new body is not carefully managed.

A bigger, all-embracing organisation can suffer from the same problems that afflict large bureaucracies; they tend to become sluggish, inward focusing and remote from the people they are supposed to serve.

The challenge will be to convert the team’s aspirations for high performance, efficiency and flexibility into a reality.

Lack of road access has huge ramifications JEANETTE SEVERS

IN THE Cann Valley, Victoria, a farmer in their 50s is a young person.

This is a community of old people who continue to work their generational farms.

It is also a community in its fourth year of drought, isolated, and has faced bushfires since early November.

Cann River dairy farmers and Saputo suppliers, Ross and Laura Walker, started readying their property for this summer’s bushfires more than 12 months ago.

“I bought a D4 dozer,” Mr Walker said.

“I’ve been preparing for this fire season for the last 12 months, everyone in this area is very concerned because you can’t rely on the authorities for fuel reduction any more.

“I put a few fire breaks around the houses and sheds, just scraping out broad areas of bare dirt.”

It was fairly easy work, given the ongoing drought in East Gippsland has meant little pasture growth.

The lack of growth also meant Mr Walker made less grass silage last spring, has relied on buying hay from neighbours and, because of the distance, only feeds his 300 milkers one tonne of grain each year.

“Freight is an extra $30/tonne for grain and an extra $50/tonne for hay. Anything you bring in costs more,” he said.

Since December 30, nothing has been brought in, apart from two truckloads of donated hay.

The grid power has been off, the performance of solar panels has been affected by overlaid ash and smoke, and people are relying on their own and neighbours’ stores of diesel fuel to power generators.

“Unleaded is also in short supply. You soon go through a tank of fuel driving around the farm checking livestock and fences,” Mr Walker said.

He has a maximum of four weeks of silage remaining, given he is feeding the milking herd 10 to 12 round 700 kg bales every day.

BASED IN TOOWOOMBA

On December 30 and 31, the bushfire that had been active on his boundaries, broke through and burned the 81 ha of pasture set aside for dry stock.

It is two-thirds of the farm’s grazing country.

“We’re getting by at the moment with dry feed, maintaining dry stock, carry over cows and bulls,” Mr Walker said.

He also had about one kilometre of boundary fence and additional internal fencing burnt.

Many farms in the district have lost fencing to the bushfires, meaning livestock are roaming.

Mr Walker had to return two bulls and some cows to a neighbour.

He is currently repairing fences where he can, but is desperate for fencing supplies to arrive, along with fresh food, fuel and fodder.

If the highways that give him access three ways were open, fencing contractors could arrive, too.

“We’re working first where there’s still a bit of grass on the southern end, its 24 of pasture and if we get it fenced, it can have cattle on it,” Mr Walker said.

Fortunately he recently replaced some of his fences with steel posts; these fences are still standing.

The community has put out a call to BlazeAid to help with fencing.

Mr Walker has also been stunned by recent offers of help and fodder.

“But without access by road, we can’t get help in, or food, fencing gear or grain or hay for the cows,” Mr Walker said.

With a diesel generator to power the dairy, so he can keep milking, Mr Walker has had to dump milk every day since the power went out with the turn of the year.

“We’ve been dumping milk since December 30,” he said.

“That’s about 5500 to 6000 litres every day.”

He supplies Saputo, but the milk tankers haven’t been able to gain access along the Princes or Monaro highways.

Nor can any supplies get along the highways.

That is despite two truckloads of donated hay receiving permits to deliver as far as Cann River.

“We were able to get 20 bales of the donated hay, delivered by road,” Mr Walker said.

“It’s not like this happens irregularly.

“We get wind storms and smaller fires throughout the year, where they regularly close the roads for a week.

“The Princes Hwy should be cleared back the tree length on both sides.

“There needs to be a conversation around access along highways and major roads.

“Dairy farmers are dependent on authorities opening roads.

“Closed roads are an occupational health and safety, medical and commerce impediment.

“They’ve got CFA volunteers here who cannot access transport routes, health care needs, backup or other services.”

The couple has also been using a diesel generator to power their house, with a little light in the evening, an opportunity to cook a meal and switch on their household water supply.

“We had to throw away everything in the freezer,” Mr Walker said.

Defence force providing much-needed help

SOLDIERS, PILOTS and navy personnel have all

been part of the relief effort around the bushfires in Queensland, Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia.

At the time of writing, more than 4000 Australian Defence Force personnel are serving across the three states, under the banner Operation Bushfire Assist.

In Victoria, especially in East Gippsland, 1300 ADF personnel in Joint Task Force 646 are assisting civilian operations.

Additional hundreds of enlisted personnel were part of the rescue mission to Mallacoota by HMAS Adelaide and Choules and MV Sycamore.

In NSW, 1400 ADF personnel in Joint Task Force 1110 are assisting in bushfire zones.

In South Australia, about 900 ADF personnel are part of Joint Task Force 1111.

There is also a cohort from the Army’s 9th Brigade providing support in Tasmania; a further smaller group are assisting in Western Australia.

In September, ADF personnel were part of support crews during bushfires in Queensland.

There are several hundred more people involved in transporting personnel and equipment across the country, by air and road, and providing logistics and accommodation, including preparing and serving meals.

The staff involved include full-time and, from January 5, a call out of 3000 reserve-enlisted

personnel focused on the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 17th Brigades and reservists from the 2nd Division, specifically the 4th, 5th and 9th Brigades.

According to a defence force spokesperson, Operation Bushfire Assist is the ADF’s main focus of operation, since they were mobilised to assist in bushfire relief in Queensland in September last year.

Apart from the well-covered extradition of tourists from Mallacoota, the ADF has delivered fuel, water, fodder and food by air to many isolated communities in East Gippsland and across NSW. Engineers have been involved in clearing roads of fallen trees and cleaning up fire-affected landscapes across all the fire areas.

The Papua New Guinea government sent an army troop of 100 engineers to Australia to assist this process.

The New Zealand and Singaporean governments have also provided defence personnel to assist.

A platoon of engineers has also been sent from Fiji to assist with the work of road clearing and assessment.

ADF helicopters have been used to transport firefighters into and out of isolated areas and aircraft are being used to conduct regular aerial surveillance over fire-affected zones, to help map fire movement and impact.

There are also ADF medical teams and pastoral officers on the ground, including in places such as Bairnsdale, Tumbarumba, Narooma, Cooma and Bega, to help meet community health needs.

airport to manage the logistics of multiple flights by firefighting aircraft with civilian and other defence-flight needs.

The ADF has been integral to delivering fodder to farmers in Bega Valley, the Buchan Valley and to Kangaroo Island.

As well as fuel and water, the ADF has delivered mail to communities, such as Mallacoota, that have been isolated for weeks by bushfires.

Two Fleetliner tanker trucks near Holbrook are providing 120 000 litres of water a day to local communities.

Heavy plant operations continue in support of the NSW Department of Forestry with construction of a 70 km-long firebreak in Bondo State Forest and in work around the Eden woodchip mill that assisted firefighters to control those fires.

The ADF delivered 18 000 litres of fuel to Omeo for generators, to power the town on January 6 and 7.

They also airlifted a few dozen people who chose to evacuate from the Omeo district.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) water treatment facility was established and began operating in Vivonne Bay, providing up to 12 000 litres of fresh water in cooperation with SA Water.

NZDF engineers supported repair tasks in the area.

ADF personnel are assisting farmers to save about $120 000 of garlic crops for local farmers on Kangaroo Island.

Defence personnel are also involved with koala rescue and care on Kangaroo Island; and in helping private residents to clear their properties in

preparation for recovery across various bushfire zones.

Defence has opened bases from Brisbane to Adelaide for the use of people needing short-term evacuation assistance. For more information, phone 1800 333 362.

The following bases are prepared to provide accommodation to evacuees if needed: RAAF Base East Sale, RAAF Base Williams, Latchford Barracks, RAAF Base Edinburgh, RAAF Base Richmond, RAAF Base Williamtown, RAAF Base Wagga and HMAS Harman.

Defence is facilitating the transport of additional fire retardant from the United States using their own airlift capacity, with assistance from international partners.

Dairy body commends response DEDICATED VOLUNTEER firefighters,

backed by government agencies, saved numerous lives and community assets during a summer of unprecedented bushfires across Australia.

Dairy Connect Farmers Group president Graham Forbes paid tribute to the work of volunteers who put their own lives at risk, while they spent time away from their families and properties.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the families that have lost loved ones as a result of these devastating bushfires,” Mr Forbes said.

“In NSW, almost five million hectares — which covers an area larger than the Netherlands — had been burned.

“We should acknowledge also the ongoing and valuable work of the Department of Primary Industries, NSW Farmers, Local Land Services and the local government councils impacted by fires.”

Dairy farmers were assisted with collection of milk, provision of fodder and diesel for generators by their processors, Dairy Australia and Dairy NSW. Local dairy liaison officer Neil Moss of Scibus contacted all affected dairy farmers, ensuring appropriate support was provided, after being appointed by the LLS. The Rural Fire Service surveyed the total number of damaged homes in NSW and confirmed 1995 homes were destroyed this season, with 816 homes damaged.

Traumatic events and grief: how the fires might affect us

this isn’t fair, why is this happening?

Secondly, they expose your own vulnerability; we immediately think it could have me that died, or my family or children.

■■ Finally, they overwhelm us; because the event is so outside what we usually experience we cannot get it out of our head.

The interesting thing about humans is that the range of thoughts, feelings and reactions will be varied.

There is no right or wrong way to respond.

Some people appear as if nothing happened, while others are unable to function as normal.

The range of responses is normal, but because the experience is usually outside our sphere of normal and everyday experiences, we often have no way of knowing that what we are going through is a natural response to an abnormal event and our mind quickly tells us we must be losing it or “cracking up”.

The “cracking up” is merely the expected short-term psychological effects of dealing with trauma.

These come in four areas: Cognitive (to do with our thinking), affective (to do with our feelings), psychophysiological (to do with our bodies) and behavioural (to do with our reactions).

■■ Cognitive problems may include difficulty in attending, concentrating, sleep disturbances, recurrent and intrusive thoughts, dreams and nightmares.

■■ Affective problems may include feelings of rejection, overwhelming sadness, worthlessness and feelings that the situation is hopeless and therefore I must be helpless. Changes in moods and feelings of depression and anxiety are affective responses.

■■ Psychophysiological problems can be real symptoms such as pains in the chest, tingling fingers, butterflies in the stomach, headaches, dry throat, etc. These are the physical indicators of the flight or fight stress response.

■■ Behavioural problems may lead to alcohol and drug dependency, withdrawal from ■■

AS I write this article, most of the NSW coast,

Snowy Mountains, Victorian high country and Gippsland and south-east Queensland, Adelaide hills, Kangaroo Island and parts of the Nullarbor Plains are being ravaged by horrendous bushfires.

Fires of this magnitude are not unusual, but what is unusual is the occurrence of such large intense fires in different parts of the country at the same time.

Disasters like these fires, the Boxing Day Tsunami, the White Island eruption, Cyclone Tracy may all be different in the damage and destruction that they cause; the components of how we are affected by real trauma (what we actually experience) and vicarious trauma (what we see, hear or read about) are the same.

Firstly, I would like to offer my sympathy to any of my readers who were affected by fires, as individuals who have lost loved ones or their homes or as members of communities who have lost valuable infrastructure.

Part of my day job during the past 30 years has been to provide critical incident response and management to schools in times of traumatic events: bushfires, severe wind storms, teacher and/or student deaths, bus accidents, kidnappings, murders, etc.

I feel that it is necessary to present this point of view because the newspapers, television and radio have bombarded us with images and descriptions that make it difficult for us not to be affected.

It is important to understand that the media plays an important role in getting vital information out to those at the fire grounds or those affected, but the continual message can be overwhelming for some.

The central theme in dealing with traumatic events is to get the community to understand what is happening to them when an event, such as bushfires, strikes their communities.

Traumatic events have three determining aspects: ■■ Firstly, they challenge your sense of justice;

sport and social groups.

For the majority of the population, if they receive appropriate counselling, then these problems will disappear.

But for a small proportion of the population, they may develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Appropriate counselling gives the person the opportunity to have their thoughts, feelings and reactions validated, legitimised and normalised.

The central theme is to get the client to understand that their reactions are a natural response to an abnormal event.

It is possible that some readers are now thinking; I’ve been feeling a bit like this, but I didn’t think that the bushfire would have that effect; I feel safe, I didn’t know anyone there, etc.

What the traumatic event has done is trigger a grief response in you, because of some other event you have experienced, previously in your life.

All humans experience grief when something or someone of value leaves or dies.

Grief is “the pain of letting go”.

How much we grieve is dependent upon how close we were to the person.

The more central the person was to us the more we will hurt and the greater the pain of letting go.

The grieving response follows a series of not so discreet steps.

All grief responses follow a similar pattern, but not all people grieve in the same way, or for the same time, or with the same intensity.

■■ The initial phase of grief is shock or numbness. When we first hear that someone has died we are shocked because up until that moment, in our mind, they were alive.

■■ The second phase is anger. It is not unusual for someone grieving to be angry at person who died, themselves, their God, everybody and anybody. Anger is a normal part of the grieving process.

■■ The next phase is denial, where we refuse to acknowledge our thoughts, feelings and actions regarding the way we are feeling.

■■ The next stage is depression, which is more

of an intense sadness than a clinical form of depression.

■■ The final stage in the process is acceptance, where we realise that we can live with the grief as the companion instead of the person.

In the aftermath and clean up of the fires, it is important that individuals and communities focus on what they can control and highlight the positive stories and experiences of community spirit and individual achievement.

In conclusion, it must be remembered that grief is a normal and natural human response.

It is painful, but will over time diminish.

Grief is the pain of letting go of someone we love and because we do not want to let them go, the pain is often very intense.

The way each of us grieves is personal and different, so there are no rules.

We must take it slowly and be prepared for a rough ride.

The best way to deal with it is to talk it out.

The short-term psychological impacts should become less frequent and the intensity should lessen over time, but if they are still worrying you six months to a year later then it is essential that you seek some professional assistance.

One good deed leads to many more

PAYING BACK a debt was high on the agenda

for Michael Shipton when the New Year’s Day bushfires hit the Bega Valley on December 30.

Four years ago, Michael and Ancret Shipton, of Candelo, NSW, lost 70 cows to facial eczema.

Quaama dairy farmers Richard and Debbie Platts turned up with 45 cows to add to the Shipton herd.

“They turned up with 45 milkers and gave them to us,” Mr Shipton said.

So when the Shipton dairy farm escaped harm from these bushfires but their neighbours, family and friends were reeling, with livestock, fences, pasture and buildings burned, Mr Shipton jumped in to help.

The young family offered their full hay shed to local dairy farmers.

“The two most distressing things for a dairy farmer are not being able to milk and not being able to feed your cows,” he said.

“It was easy to say, go to my shed.”

Bega Cheese organised the trucks, covered the cost of freight and co-ordinated delivery to 20 of its affected suppliers.

Mr and Mrs Shipton also paid for a B-double of oaten hay to be brought in from Brown Mountain and distributed among fellow dairy farmers.

“We paid for the hay and our transporter, Belubula Valley Hay from Canowindra, covered the cost of freight,” Mr Shipton said.

Along with farm worker Jeremy Spindler and electrician Rod Camilleri, Mr Shipton took the Shipton’s mobile generator on tour.

The 25KVA stand-alone generator, on its own trailer, is normally used to power the centre pivot.

They also took jerry cans of fuel with them, so other farmers could boost their own supplies.

“The generator is quite handy around the farm,” Mr Shipton said.

“We went to four dairies and Rod wired in the generator and we helped milk the cows.

“Everyone only missed one milking, before the power was back on.

“Then Rod went back and rewired their dairies, so they were back to normal.”

Mr Shipton and Mr Spindler also spent two days helping friends, Aaron and Emma Salway and Tim and Leanne Salway, at Cobargo, whose brother and father, Patrick and Robert Salway, died in the bushfires.

All of them have dairy farms hit by bushfires and losses include a considerable number of dairy cows.

“They have a lot to deal with and Jeremy and I went up there for two days, cleaning up and fencing,” Mr Shipton said.

“We’ll go back to give them more help soon.

“Because of the help we received from the Platts, we wanted to give back.

“We got to the Salways immediately because they needed help.

“It was important to help people straight away.”

local dairy farmers, with the company quick to organise fodder, fuel, generators, water and other supplies, and getting road access to pick up milk.

Dairy farmers were also reassured they would be paid for the milk they had to dump before a milk truck could get to their farm.

Bega Cheese chair Max Roberts said the processor’s milk loss because of dumped milk was quite small compared to overall production.

Bega Cheese has lost about 700 000 to 800 000 litres of milk that has been dumped on farm, in a milk pool of about one billion litres.

The main reason for dumping milk has been lack of road access by trucks to pick up farmers’ main livelihood.

But he said the loss would not have a major impact on supply; although the stock market had responded by downgrading the company’s share value.

He said the biggest challenge for farmers was ensuring a reliable power supply, so dairies could operate and cows could be milked.

“In our pick-up area, we haven’t lost any cows to the bushfire,” he said.

Fodder donations have also ensured many people have been able to look after their cows.

“As of yesterday, police escorts have been able to provide escort to milk trucks to pick up supply,” he said, in early January.

Bega Cheese support to individual farmers is to identify the best value for support — fencing is a priority and a permanent temporary electricity source is the next item on the list.

Some farmers are hopeful large generators will be available from the ADF, along with the skills to connect dairies to this power source.

Single body plan A SINGLE new, national body should be cre-

ated for the dairy industry, a report has found.

The new one-stop shop organisation would be responsible for advocacy, marketing, research and development and policy development.

Australian Dairy Plan independent chair John Brumby said the recommended change was a “significant” shift from the current fragmented nature of the industry.

The new body would be funded by the current dairy levy on all farmers, but processors have been invited to contribute as well.

The new organisation would be based in Melbourne but continue with representation in the major dairy regions.

Mr Brumby said the new model should be put to a vote of dairy farmers about mid-year.

Farmers heavily criticised industry advocacy bodies in a series of workshops held to discuss the dairy plan last year, and also argued that bodies like Dairy Australia should be doing more to lobby for farmers.

The new report released in January makes the following points about current arrangements: ■■

New body offers benefits: Mumford UDV PRESIDENT Paul Mumford says a new

national body to represent the dairy industry would be beneficial after further consultation with farmers.

The Australian Dairy Plan Committee’s Joint Transition Team released a report on Wednesday, January 29, recommending a new model called NewCo B, to restructure the way the dairy industry operates.

JTT chair Shirley Harlock said the JTT’s analysis confirmed a view that current industry institutional arrangements were

no longer fit for purpose.

“I encourage everyone in the industry to read the report carefully and to lend your support for implementation of a new, modern organisation that would enable our great dairy industry to prosper nationally and internationally into the future," Ms Harlock said.

Mr Mumford said the report suggested what a unified model would look like, but more work was required in order to assist farmers.

"It’s now been put to the state dairy-farming organisations to open the discussion up with our

members and farmers to identify what the farmers are wanting out of a united national voice, and whether it’s an appropriate model," he said.

Mr Mumford said feedback submissions to the Australian Dairy Plan committee from industry members were due on Saturday, February 29, and that the period of time for engagement was too short to get the project right.

"We put in a request for an extension for that deadline and it has been granted, I’ve been told the new date will be extended for a month," he said.

"We need a broader conversation on legislation and how policy leaders address farmers’ issues, because this document doesn’t delineate between state boundaries."

Mr Mumford said the released report brought on many questions that still needed to be answered including how accountability will be held and to whom, how processors collected levies and how the new six regional dairy offices would be identified and run.

STRUCTURE “IGNORES GRASSROOTS FARMERS” South-west Victorian dairy farmers say Australia’s grassroots farmers are again being ignored in industry restructure plans.

The Wannon branch of the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria says the industry would be better off keeping its current advocacy structure rather than adopting the Joint Transition Team plan.

Vice-president Bernie Free said while the branch would meet in the next week to formulate an official response to the proposal, his initial thoughts were negative.

“It’s a worse proposal than what’s already out there; we might as well just stay with what we’ve got,” Mr Free said.

The branch had proposed a united national organisation called Dairy Farmers Australia, which aimed to bring together policy, industry advocacy and R&D, led by farmers.

“Our proposal had farmers in control; farmers are answerable to farmers all the way up our tree to national level,” Mr Free said.

“This JTT proposal is like DA hijacking the whole advocacy, R&D and education side with no grassroots control and no grassroots mechanism to challenge the national body to justify what it’s doing.”

Mr Free said the current system was far from perfect, but at least gave farmers a chance to be heard.

“This system would get to a board that’s going to be skills based, whatever that means, which means it will be like DA and they don’t take any notice.”

Mr Free said hands-on farmers were needed to represent fellow farmers.

“Our top people are supposed to be talking to federal ministers and if they’re not farmers, it doesn’t mean as much,” he said.

“You need to be able to sit in front of politicians and say I’m a farmer and know what I’m talking about and I talk to other farmers; if you’ve got a skills based board then you end up with a lot who aren’t farmers and can’t say they’ve got the fingers on the pulse.”

The branch also opposes processors in a national body.

“Our proposal is farmer-based; we don’t want processors in the room,” Mr Free said.

“Why on earth would we jump into bed with processors? We need processors and processors need us, but there are times where we have to stand up for ourselves and say that might be to the processors’ advantage but it’s not to our advantage.

Champions shine at IDW THE BUILD-UP to International Dairy Week

2020 had it all and yet fires, drought and tough conditions weren’t enough to deter a determined group of exhibitors from presenting their best cattle to the world in Tatura last week.

For the Templeton family from Tarwin, in Gippsland, the purchase of Avonlea Reginald Jacobina last year proved fruitful, with the sixyear-old taking out Champion Senior Holstein and IDW Grand Champion for 2020.

The family was ecstatic with the win, along with Holstein judge Brad Walker who was impressed by the ‘dairy-ness’ of the cow.

Tongala’s Frank Walsh and Brad and Jess Gavenlock from Cherrylock Cattle Co,

Tallygaroopna, won Senior Champion Jersey Cow and Reserve Grand Champion Interbreed with Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7.

Her pedigree can be traced back by Mr Walsh to 1908.

“Dawn has won her class every year she has competed and it is just so great to see her perform so well,” Mr Walsh said.

When Rochester’s Trevor and Julie Campbell sold their dairy herd last year they kept only two milkers; lucky one of them was Jimann Tequila Maree.

The three-year-old was hard to beat in the Jersey ring, taking out Intermediate Champion Jersey Cow along with Interbreed Intermediate Reserve Champion.

“Tequila Maree is the culmination of 53 years of breeding and I can remember buying the foundation cow when I was just 16 years old,” Mr Campbell said.

The Campbells were delighted with the win and described it as a great way to finish their dairy career.

Leitchville’s Steve and Deanne Hore had a great show, with Elmar Solomon Jessica 5-ET crowned Holstein Intermediate Champion and Interbreed Intermediate Champion.

The couple was very proud of how she looked and how she walked the ring.

“It was such an even show this year and to get a place, yet alone a ribbon in such a strong group of classes is amazing — the quality of

cattle this year really were a credit to all the exhibitors,” Mrs Hore said.

A highlight of the show was the fundraising efforts by the IDW community for the Salway family and the Bushfire Appeal, which saw $65 000 donated from the sale of a cow from the herd of Australian Fresh Milk Holdings — the cow made $50 000 while World Wide Sires added $15 000.

The crowd was also boosted by the attendance of the worldwide Ayrshire community, who stopped in at the show as part of the breed’s world conference.

Ayrshire breeder Michael Howie from Northumberland was impressed by the quality of cattle he saw across all the breeds.

“It has been a fabulous experience and a great few days spent at IDW,” Mr Howie said.

Charity auction raises $65,000 ULUPNA PASTORAL Company, Coppertree

Farms, Flanagan Marketing Services and Woodlawn Holsteins teamed up to purchase the cow as part of International Dairy Week’s World Wide Sires Evolution Sale bushfire appeal auction.

The syndicate donated $50 000 to the Salway family, from Cobargo, and BlaizeAid, before World Wide Sires chipped in with a further $15 000.

Flanagan Marketing Services director Lawrie Flanagan said the main reason for the purchase was to donate to the cause.

"The main reason was the donation," he said.

"There’s not many cows worth $50 000.

"We’re happy to be involved and help a worthy cause.

"If we make money out of it, it will be a bonus."

Mr Flanagan said they syndicate would pick out a good cow, with good index, type and pedigree and hopefully it will work out over time.

Once chosen, the cow will call Finley’s Flanagan Marketing Services director Lawrie Flanagan. His company was part of the syndicate that purchased the charity cow at the start of the IDW World Wide Sires Evolution Sale.

Family affair BLIGHTY’S ELLA Marshall is the future of

dairy industry in the NSW Murray valley.

The 12 year-old competed at the International Dairy Week in Tatura, taking after her father Lachlan Marshall.

Mr Marshall said he “could not be prouder” of his daughter.

“We have never pushed our children into dairy, but Ella has just gravitated towards it and has developed a great interest for our stock,” he said.

“I jumped in the car and drove to see Ella as she led one of our heifers in the youth competition.

“I then had to head back home to milk the cows, but I am just so proud of the person she has become.”

Ella also led for Kit Davidson who works at the Marshalls’ Blighty farm, and stayed to assist Kit for the rest of the week.

They showed a variety of cattle including Brown Swiss and a Holstein Friesian.

Mr Marshall said he was not only impressed by his daughter’s commitment to the industry.

He said the interest and passion shown by other young people wanting to be a part of the dairy industry was encouraging.

“It was great to see so many young people leading some exceptional cattle across all of the breeds, and seeing them involved,” Mr Marshall said.

“It is an important event to be involved in because it gives the participating youth, our next generation dairy farmers, an experience and an opportunity to handle and work with these animals, feed them and take care of them.

“There is a lot that goes on at the farms to get these cows ready for the show, so it was even better to see young people involved in

From his own observations, Mr Marshall believes both competitor and entrant numbers were up on last year.

“People committed to showing turned out in good numbers,” he said.

“The quality of the cattle were also well classed which was also great to see considering current conditions.

“I think it has been a great opportunity for people to get off their farms, stop talking about water, feed prices and the drought, and come together with like-minded people with a passion for dairy.”

After the bushfire appeal sale, it was Lot 7 — Cypress Grove V3 Ronimo Tiffany — that topped the World Wide Sires Evolution Sale after it sold for $12 000.

The top-priced cow was owned by the Jones family, from Foster, and was sold to Emu Banks Holsteins, from Terang.

Mr Leslie said he expected Cypress Grove V3 Ronimo Tiffany to top the sale.

“Yeah, I actually did (think it would sell for that much),” he said.

“She was number 17 BPI heifer in Australia and the Jones family sold her — it’s the first time they’ve sold at IDW. “Like every sale you do, there’s bargains in it but overall I think it was a very successful sale.”

The sale saw 31 Holstein cattle sell at an average price of $5295 and was conducted by Dairy Livestock Services.

The same sale in 2019 topped at $16 000, and averaged $6990 in 2018.

Zandstra’s role to talk directly to dairy farmers IT HAS been four months since Nowra dairy

farmer Ian Zandstra was appointed to the role of NSW Dairy Advocate.

Mr Zandstra’s role included facilitating the establishment of a Dairy Industry Advisery Panel, which was announced in January and includes people from a dairy farming background.

“We have researchers, consultants, DPI people and former processor directors on the panel who are all well-grounded in dairy and I think my role will be strengthened by the panel to advise and help me,” Mr Zandstra said.

Mr Zandstra said his role was to talk directly to dairy farmers and regularly report back to the agriculture minister.

He said there were a whole range of issues going on across the state, including drought, fires, fodder costs, lack of water and water storage in the Bega Valley along with water policy and the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in the Riverina.

“The MDBP plan is a real issue and there needs to be some sort of review, especially considering it is based on some scientific background that is not correct,” he said.

“The Riverina was once the favoured place for progressive farmers and political overtones have got in the way of the call to pause the plan and it is a real tragedy.”

Mr Zandstra said he had been busy keeping in touch with as many dairy farmers as possible, but he had made a deliberate attempt to keep things on the quiet, so as not become a dairy headline.

Dorrigo dairy farmer Julie Moore said she had not seen or heard anything much on these appointments.

She fears like many previous dairy initiatives, it has been started with the best of intentions, but will achieve little.

“I don’t really know what has happened with any of this,” Julie said.

She said on a positive note her farm had received some magnificent rains in December and grass was starting to grow.

“We are doing much better than we were six weeks ago, and I feel very blessed,” Julie said.

“Our supplier Norco has been helping us as much as they can — we have had a good increase in milk price and things are starting to look up.”

CONFERENCE TO TACKLE CULTURAL CHANGE The cream of the crop of Australia’s dairy industry will line up in Melbourne this month for Australia’s premier dairy event — the Australian Dairy Conference — from February 19 to 21.

A volatile start to the year adds further pressure to already stressed feed supplies SAM LEISHMAN DAIRY AUSTRALIA

FOLLOWING A challenging season of high input

prices for many dairy farmers across the country, the industry looks to a new year with hopes of improved operating conditions.

Unfortunately, the start of a new decade hasn’t provided the much-needed relief but added further challenges.

Bushfires have ravaged parts of the country and exacerbated the already drought-affected feed supply.

What started as a promising season for feed production last year was significantly scaled back and is forecast to end down year-on-year.

Hay and grain yields were variable across the country, with most of the production taking place in the south-eastern states.

Feed prices in late 2019 softened slightly although withstood the normal pressure associated with harvest.

Entering the new-year period, prices firmed

once again as competition increased due to the ongoing drought and more recently, bushfires.

Vast farming areas across Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia were heavily impacted by the fires.

While large areas of bushland were impacted, significant damage occurred to pasture, hay supplies and stored grain.

Fires in NSW and Queensland burnt typical cropping land, although because of the drought, little to no crops had been sown.

Properties in these affected areas required urgent feed.

As roads were closed many deliveries required police escort or in some cases, fodder drops by helicopter.

This sudden spike in demand combined with the sustained pressure from drought-stricken areas increased enquiries for hay significantly.

A heightened presence of trucks on the road and fear of a supply shortfall triggered reports of “panic” buying.

Supported by an increase in hay donations, this resulted in prices firming in nearly all regions.

At the time of writing, cereal hay is trading up to $78/tonne higher on average this month compared to December.

However, most regions are trading at a discount or similar price to this time last year, excluding Tasmania and Western Australia.

During the Christmas period domestic grain prices also followed offshore markets higher.

Despite this price climb, all regions are trading at similar or lower prices this month compared to January 2019.

It must be noted that hay and grain prices are compared to a significantly high price last year and the cost remains well above historical averages.

Rainfall across the eastern seaboard in late January helped fire-hit regions and improved the soil-moisture profile across the country.

This was particularly favourable in southern Queensland, which has experienced challenging conditions for some time now.

On the back of the late rain some farmers are looking to plant sorghum, but for the most part, this will do little to improve the area planted this summer.

It is expected that this will be one of the smallest sorghum crops for 20 years as unfavourable conditions throughout early summer hindered planting.

The increased demand for feed doesn’t always result in an increase in supply released to the market.

It’s hard to quantify how much hay is being traded.

However, it’s postulated that seller engagement is low as many growers keep supply for personal use.

This has also been true in the grain market.

Therefore, prices going forward will partly be affected by sellers’ willingness to release feed onto the market.

Despite challenging seasonal conditions, there is still hay and fodder available around the country.

Industry sources suggest that it is unlikely supply would run out completely, although as prices climb it becomes increasingly unaffordable to purchase.

Therefore, it is the tradeable volume that has the potential to run out.

With little to no data on production or the amount of hay and fodder traded in Australia, it is difficult to quantify volumes in challenging circumstances such as the bushfires.

This has prompted discussions of the need for a more transparent market database.

Milk production fall AUSTRALIAN MILK production has fallen by

5.5 per cent, a loss of 190 million litres, in the first four months of 2019–20, according to Rabobank’s latest global Dairy Quarterly report.

With the latest outlook from the Bureau of Meteorology suggesting conditions could remain drier-than-average over the summer months, Rabobank senior dairy analyst Michael Harvey said the bank had revised down its 2019–20 milk production forecast to a fall of 5.8 per cent.

“On a volume basis, this fall to 8.3 billion litres represents another loss of 500 million litres of milk from the system,” Mr Harvey said.

“With the majority of falls to come from northern Victoria and the southern NSW irrigation districts.”

That said, Mr Harvey said production was tipped to return to growth in some key dairy regions in southern Australia, with producers in these regions in a better position to capitalise on high milk prices given their on-farm silage reserves.

This is flowing into limited supply growth, with combined milk production growth among the big-seven milk producing regions (the US, the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay) expected to remain at, or slightly below, one per cent throughout 2020 and into the first half of 2021.

Most of this growth is expected to come out of the EU and US, however it will be relatively modest.

In New Zealand, the volatile weather will tip the balance for the season between incremental growth of around 0.5 per cent or a decline of similar magnitude.

While in China, the report said, elevated milk

prices were driving an increased interest in herd expansion, with the country’s 2020 output forecast to grow by two per cent.

Given the modest milk production outlook, skim milk powder prices are likely to see the most improvement, while butter prices are expected to remain generally range-bound and cheese, fairly stable.

“The report also said that with milk and dairy product prices on the rise, the ability to pass on increases to consumers through the supply chain could prove a challenge.”

In terms of the price outlook, Mr Harvey said Rabobank had held its commodity milk price forecast for 2019–20 at $6.65/kg of milk solids.

“Over the past quarter, there has been further upward movements in announced farm gate milk prices, with reported weighted average prices across the southern export region ranging between $6.90/kg MS and $7.20/kg MS, including supplementary payments.”

With production down, Mr Harvey said Australian exporters continued to battle tighterthan-normal exportable surpluses.

“This will mean an ongoing push to optimise their respective product mixes, with the exportable surplus set to remain under pressure throughout 2020.”

The report also said that with milk and dairy product prices on the rise, the ability to pass on increases to consumers through the supply chain could prove a challenge.

It said consumer demand could be at risk, with “much of the world either recovering from, in the midst of, or on the verge of some degree of recession”, citing slower growth already seen in the United States (in its restaurant trade) and Argentina.

“Dairy producers around the world have spent the last several years waiting for a return to price levels reminiscent of those seen in 2014,” the report said.

“Now we are approaching that territory, there is anxiety over consumers’ ability to withstand price increases.”

Despite the positive price signals, the report said dairy producers were hesitant, or unable, to expand as they wait to see if the higher prices can be absorbed by consumers. If not, the upside

20 // NEWS CONFERENCE EXAMINES FUTURE GENETIC DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS World-leading genetics experts will outline what the future is likely to hold for the industry at a major Victorian conference in March.

Genetics Australia will host the threeday conference on March 18 to 20 to examine future directions in genetics with a horizon of 2030.

The conference will start with a oneday forum at Tabcorp Park in Melton on March 18 followed by farm tours in South and West Gippsland during the next two days to showcase progressive breeding programs.

The event has attracted leading international and Australian speakers, including Select Sires International Development vice-president Joel Mergler, Sexing Technologies chief executive officer Juan Moreno, Texas A&M University assistant professor Ky Pohler, Dairy Australia senior industry analyst John Droppert and Agriculture Victoria principal research scientist (genomic and cellular sciences) Jennie Pryce.

Genetics Australia chief executive officer Anthony Shelly said the conference would be a great opportunity to hear from some of the best geneticists and genetic professionals in the world.

“The conference will give dairy farmers and industry professionals a glimpse into what the future is likely to hold,” Mr Shelly said.

“It is rare to have such an outstanding group of local and international speakers

all in one place.”

The conference will look at genetic developments in the global space and determine how these developments will impact the Australian breeding industry and the broader Dairy Industry.

“Over the past few years the progression of genetics in the dairy industry and more broadly in agriculture has been phenomenal, and with the volume of research and development happening, that will expand even further the next decade,” Mr Shelly said.

“This conference will pull together all relevant information and help any interested farmer or industry member to understand how we can adapt to these new technologies to make sure we’re ahead of the game and achieving the best possible and most profitable outcomes.”

Day one of the conference will conclude with a dinner with Sexing Technologies chief executive officer Juan Moreno speaking on his ST journey.

Committed to natural and sustainable farming A DAIRY  farming family’s decision to move

away from perennial rye-grass to some new pasture species might be challenging convention, but it is certainly working for the Davis family from Cobden.

Reggie and Tanya Davis along with their four children milk 600 Holstein cows grazing 260 hectares of pastures.

Along with three other farming families in the area, they supply fresh milk to the Green Pastures label they established five years ago.

It is now one of the only Australian-owned milk brands available on supermarket shelves.

The Davis family is committed to natural and sustainable dairy farming.

Almost a decade ago they began rebuilding their soils with biodynamic farming principles, replacing the majority of their conventional granular fertiliser program with home-made compost.

More recently, new grass varieties have been

According to Reggie, rye-grass pastures are often not robust enough to handle the rigours of extreme climatic conditions, or high stocking rates needed to maintain profitability. “It’s not cheap replanting your pastures every year,� he said. “Ideally, we want to have pastures with a good density and good persistence that don’t need a truckload of fertiliser every month.�

He started exploring alternatives three years ago, with help from pasture seed specialist, Michael Grant from Stephen Pasture Seeds.

On farm, Hummer is mixed with white clover and is boosted with home-made compost, as well as some sulphate of ammonia in the winter.

“Hummer grows like mad in spring, so we often have to cut it for silage to keep up with the growth,” Reggie said.

“Even in summer it’s ready to graze again after 12 to 13 days rather than 16 to 20. It loves being grazed.

“These newer release fescue varieties like Hummer are more palatable for the cows than the older style varieties that would cut your tongue if you tried to chew them.”

With the success of Hummer attention was then turned to a group of paddocks with variable soils — a Hummer tall fescue and Savvy cocksfoot mix was used.

Savvy cocksfoot is a new high-yielding cocksfoot variety suited to shallow, lighter soils and is disease resistant and bred to tolerate hard grazing.

“Savvy and Hummer together have been good on our irrigated pastures, with the Savvy dominating on the dry corners of the centre pivot paddocks,” Reggie said.

“Savvy’s brilliant when you get a shower of rain over summer, it greens up straight away.”

But he said it was important to go through a cropping program to prepare paddocks well and give the new deep-rooted pastures time to establish.

“Don’t graze too hard the first winter and

that way, you should have it for five to 10 years,” he said.

The latest pasture renovation project has been on some dryland hill country. Again, the focus has been setting paddocks up for longterm persistence sowing Savvy cocksfoot with Prospect AR37 perennial rye-grass.

“The rye-grass is really a cover to suppress weeds, provide some early grazing and give the Savvy cocksfoot time to establish. Over time, I expect the rye-grass will decline in this hill country, while the Savvy cocksfoot thrives.”

The whole grazing system is supported by the biological farming system, which is based on using effluent from the herd mixed with gypsum to create a healthy compost. This largely replaces granular fertilisers.

Reggie said they had been tracking soil health and fertility for a decade and have seen improvements in a range of areas, including the numbers of worms and other soil biota and increasing soil phosphorus levels.

“The combination of our soil-management practices and the introduction of these new deep-rooted pasture varieties are really paying dividends for our farm,” he said.

“We’re not spending as much on bought-in feed, or fertiliser, and with pastures that will last, we’re reducing the time and money spent on sowing and pasture renovation.”

Michael Grant said dairy farmers had a range of pasture and cropping options available to them beyond traditional rye-grass pastures.

“One size doesn’t fit all, and the right pasture

depends on your rainfall, soil type, grazing patterns and the way you want to manage the farm overall,” Mr Grant said.

“It has been great working with Reggie. He’s open to addressing problems and trying new things.

“This new approach is really working for him — you can just see it in the pastures.”

Tips for autumn pasture DURING SUMMER in south-eastern Australia,

with limited rainfall on rain-fed areas of the farm, leaf emergence rates slow, pasture growth rates decline and there is increased grazing pressure on any irrigated areas of the farm.

As a result, the average pasture cover of the farm tends to decrease.

The autumn break occurs when there is a significant rainfall event with follow-up rain that lead into winter.

Sometimes there are “false” autumn breaks when there is a significant rainfall event but no follow-up rain in the following weeks.

In a “false” autumn break, pasture will become green, but there is little growth and once soil moisture becomes limiting again, this growth will stop.

Once the true autumn break does occur, it provides the opportunity to build pasture covers across the grazing platform prior to cooler conditions and slower pasture growth during winter.

To get the greatest benefit from the autumn break consider: grazing management, nitrogen use, pasture renovation and grazing management.

There are three principles to follow to maximise pasture consumption and ensure good pasture quality.

1. Set grazing rotation based on leaf stage For rye-grass-based pastures, this means grazing at the 2.5 to three-leaf stage or before canopy closure to maximise the amount of pasture grown. The difficulty of achieving this will depend on how the farm was managed during the dry period. If a leaf-stage based rotation was maintained on the rain-fed area of the farm despite there being only a small amount of growth, this should be continued.

If a fast-grazing rotation was used or rain-fed paddocks were not grazed during the dry period there would be a bulk of paddocks at a similar leaf stage. In both circumstances, there will need to be some compromise to establish the right rotation and achieve an orderly feed wedge.

2. Grazing duration In slowing down the rotation, it is important to ensure an area isn’t grazed for longer than two to three days. If cows are grazing the one paddock for more than three days, they will start to eat the pasture regrowth, which will slow growth rates and reduce pasture yield. Use back fencing to avoid this.

Ensure if young stock or dry cows are following the milkers the grazing is completed within three days.

3. Ensure grazing residual targets are reached Aim for a post-grazing residual height of four to 6 cm between the clumps, equivalent to 1400– 1600 kg DM/ha to maintain quality.

Nitrogen use Nitrogen fertiliser is generally a cost effective tool for increasing pasture growth and could be considered when extra feed is needed. Nitrogen is only effective on boosting the growth of pasture that is growing — it shouldn’t be applied to dormant pasture and where soil moisture is limiting. Nitrogen can be applied as soon as there is a significant rainfall event (>25 mm) and continue until soil temperature becomes too low.

Temperate pasture (e.g. rye-grass) will generally

respond to nitrogen when soil temperature is above 4°C. Sub-tropical pasture (e.g. kikuyu) will respond to nitrogen when soil temperature is above 10°C. — Dairy Australia.

conditions there is a heightened risk of nitrate poisoning in livestock.

When an animal is poisoned by nitrate the ability of its blood to transport oxygen is reduced.

As a result, an affected animal will have difficulty breathing, followed by becoming weak and staggery before collapsing and dying. If clinical signs are noticed early enough, veterinary treatment is possible.

A range of different weeds, crops and pasture plants have been associated with nitrate poisoning.

Capeweed, variegated thistle, marshmallow and pigweed are well-known accumulators.

Other crop plants including maize, rape, soybean, linseed, sorghum, millet, wheat, oats and barley have also been associated with nitrate poisoning, under certain growing conditions.

The factors that typically lead to plants causing nitrate poisoning include: ■ rapid plant uptake of soil nitrate following rain after a prolonged dry spell; ■ moisture stress and low temperatures;

the use of nitrogenous fertilisers; and spraying with hormone-type herbicides such as 2,4-D makes plants more palatable.

If you have any concerns, it is recommended that hay and other feed be tested prior to feeding to determine its nitrate levels.

Cattle and sheep can tolerate a certain amount of nitrate.

One way of reducing the risk of nitrate poisoning is to ensure that cattle and sheep are not overly hungry when introduced to a new feed, so their intake of nitrate is moderated to a tolerable level.

If nitrate poisoning is suspected, animals should be removed without delay from the suspect paddock/ feed and placed onto low-risk feed containing less toxic herbage.

Rye grass has become a key pasture element.

DAIRY FARMERS seeking a way of assess-

ing the agronomic performance or economic benefit of different rye-grass cultivars can use a rating system to determine the best choices for their property.

Australian dairy farmers invest more than $100 million renovating pastures each year.

Perennial rye-grass accounts for almost 80 per cent of this.

The Forage Value Index is a rating system that helps Australian dairy producers and their advisers to make more informed decisions when selecting perennial rye-grass cultivars. It provides an accurate, reliable and independent assessment of the potential economic value of perennial rye-grass cultivars in different dairy regions of south-east Australia.

The selection of better-performing cultivars will help to increase pasture productivity at key times of the year and ultimately, farm profitability.

The FVI is based on independently-calculated Performance Values for seasonal dry matter production and Economic Values.

PVs are determined by trial data from the Pasture Variety Trial Network, supplemented by data supplied by plant breeding companies that meet eligibility criteria.

EVs are determined by economic analysis of case study farms in different dairying regions in south-east Australia.

The FVI for each cultivar is expressed using a colour coding system, with the green colour representing the best performing cultivars in each region.

The FVI ranks cultivars according to their colour coding and user-nominated attributes (for example seasonal production, ploidy, heading date, and endophyte). Only cultivars listed in the Pasture Seed Database and confirmed as a cultivar by the Australian Seed Federation are used in the FVI. The Forage Value Index pasture tables are available for dairy regions in south-eastern Australia.

The FVI tables have been recently updated with the inclusion of the results of several pasture trials conducted in southern Australia. More cultivars have been included and additional trials of current cultivars have extended scope of the FVI tables.

The seasonal performance tables rank cultivars by their performance (yield) in each season.

Each table also shows the overall FVI performance and the other season’s performance.

Use these tables to narrow down the choice of cultivars. Cultivars with the green bars are the highest performing.

Getting started on pasture renovation HOME-GROWN FEED on a dairy farm is most

often the lowest-cost feed source.

Repairing run-down and severely droughtaffected dairy pastures is a high priority, but can be an expensive process.

Start by assessing and prioritising paddocks and in some cases parts of paddocks that will benefit from resowing or full renovation.

These may include: ■■ Higher fertility areas that will respond quickly with a simple resowing and start contributing to the grazing rotation. These may be the highest priority.

■■ Mid-range soil fertility areas that will require more preparation time and fertiliser/effluent cost but give a good response for this winter.

■■ Run-down pastures — perhaps regular silage/hay paddocks that will respond well to renovation as well as the addition of strategic fertiliser to support grazing early and production of multiple fodder cuts later in the year.

■■ Farm areas that have not performed very well for years, and require time consuming and costly renovation. These may be a lower priority and may need short-term species sown before sowing back to perennial grasses, for example an annual rye-grass followed by a fodder crop next summer?

Test soil samples from strategic areas on the farm if this has not been done in the past three years.

The results will help prioritise the paddocks to resow first, determine program and application rates of base and maintenance phosphorus, potassium and sulphur. Contact your agronomist for further information.

The workload required and costs of the renovation program will assist in deciding what paddocks and how many paddocks can be renovated.

Ensure that contractors are booked in advance and that the budget for the program includes soil testing, fertiliser, seed, contractors and extra labour if required.

Run-down pastures will require a bigger investment in time and resources.

Pastures have been severely impacted in many dairying regions hence the demand for seed in autumn is expected to be high.

Burnt pasture recovery will be grappling with recovery after fires swept through their properties and destroyed their pastures in January.

Appropriate action will depend on the intensity of the burn, the condition of the pasture before the fire, what type of pasture was established, pasture recovery post-burn and the finance and time available.

Peter Notman and Adam Fisher of Notman Pasture Seeds have listed practical management strategies to improve pasture recovery and get it back to producing quality livestock feed.

Peter and Adam said it was important to note that the intensity of the burn would impact the potential recovery rate of pasture grasses.

“In cool-moderate burns pasture can recover provided adequate moisture and fertiliser is available after the fire event,” Mr Notman and Mr Fisher said.

“In intense hot burns where there was a fair amount of fuel on the paddock in dry pasture, all plant material maybe dead, so the area should be re-sown.”

In areas of perennial grasses an important strategy of overflowing troughs is effective in establishing the pasture recovery.

“Adjust the float valve on your water trough to make it overflow and making it irrigate a small area to see what grass plants recover with moisture,” Mr Fisher said.

“Do this two to three times to identify whether the plant populations in the paddock have survived.

“If perennial pasture recovery after watering paddock is not satisfactory then re-sowing would be required with a leafy diploid perennial rye-grass, such as Matrix.”

Kikuyu pasture would be expected to regrow after rain/moisture and should be re-sown with annual or Italian rye-grasses as per the normal practice in autumn.

“In cool-moderate burns pasture can recover provided adequate moisture and fertiliser is available after the fire event.”

For any Italian rye-grasses affected it is best practice to re-sow those paddocks regardless with a densely tillered rye-grass, such as Vibe.

“With persistent and production and extremely late heading (plus-27 days) to stay leafier for longer late in season we have received excellent feedback with Vibe from many of our customers,” Mr Fisher said.

Early re-sowing options include cereals, annual rye-grass and Italian rye-grass. All should be re-sown in autumn as per normal practice.

“A good early planting combination would be Bullet annual rye-grass and forage oats,” Mr Notman said.

“Oats are slightly quicker to start and the Bullet Annual Rye-grass provides far better quality and tonnage as the season goes on.”

Where there is an adequate regenerating pasture, or where pasture seed has been sown a fertiliser application will speed the growth and

the recovery of the pasture.

“A soil test would also be recommended as a fire burns the top organic matter layer of soil.

A soil test will determine if there are any problems,” Mr Notman said.

Weed control is also essential to ensure broadleaf weeds do not compete with moisture and nutrients of re-generating pasture.

Warmest year on record THE BUREAU of Meteorology has released its

2019 Annual Climate Statement, showing 2019 was the warmest and driest year on record for Australia.

The Annual Climate Statement is the bureau’s official summary of the previous year and includes information on temperature, rainfall and significant weather.

Australia’s average mean temperature in 2019 was 1.52 °C above average, making it the warmest on record since consistent national temperature

records began in 1910 and surpassing the previous record in 2013 of 1.33 °C above average.

Meanwhile, the national average rainfall total in 2019 was 277 mm, the lowest since consistent national records began in 1900. The previous record low was 314 mm set during the Federation drought in 1902.

Bureau of Meteorology head of climate monitoring Karl Braganza said the record warm and dry year was one of the key factors influencing recent and current fire conditions in large parts

of the country.

"2019 was consistently warm, but it was bookended by periods of extreme heat," Dr Braganza said.

"January last year was the warmest month Australia has ever recorded, while just a few weeks ago in December, we saw the Australia-wide record hottest daily average maximum temperature broken multiple days in a row.

"At the same time, rainfall deficiencies across large parts of eastern Australia have continued to

increase, unfortunately exacerbating both drought conditions and the current bushfires."

Dr Braganza said there were multiple factors influencing Australia’s weather patterns in 2019.

"Most of this year, Australia’s climate has been dominated by a very strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole, which acted to warm and dry Australia’s landscape, particularly from around the middle of the year,” Dr Braganza said.

"We also saw the influence of a rare Sudden Stratospheric Warming event high above the south pole, which acted to push our weather systems northward and compound the warmer and drier than average conditions over southern Queensland and NSW during spring, amplifying the fire weather.

"The other key factor at play is that Australia’s climate has warmed by more than a degree since 1910, which means very warm years like 2019 are now more likely to occur, while the trend in recent decades has been for drier winter and spring seasons in the south."

Last year also saw some periods of significant rain in northern Queensland and north west Western Australia.

In recent weeks, some of the key drivers of the recent warm and dry patterns during Australia have eased.

As a result, rainfall for the coming months is expected to be average to below average in the east, while wetter-than-average conditions are possible for much of Western Australia and South Australia.

However, temperatures are likely to remain warmer than average during the rest of summer.

ALTHOUGH DAIRY producers are paying more

attention to their milking cows during heat stress, many times they will not be aware of how heat stress during the dry cow period has a huge negative impact on the cow and her offspring.

This implies economic losses for the dairy producer; as an example, it represents an average loss of A$130 per cow per year in United States dairy herds (Ferreira et al., 2016) when dry cows are under heat stress.

This amount is only considering the loss of the subsequent milk production and not the impact on the offspring.

Dairy cows will adapt to heat stress by modifying her metabolism to increase body heat loss and reduce heat production.

Part of the adaptive mechanism also involves a shift in glucose use to prioritise the immune system at the expense of other uses, such as milk production and reproduction.

A summary of various studies has demonstrated that when dry cows are under heat stress during either the close up or the entire dry cow period, their subsequent milk production dropped by 2.2 or 4 kg per day respectively during their next entire lactation period (Tao et al. 2016; Macko et al., 2017).

Although the reduction in pre-calving dry matter intake (1 to 1.5 kg) explains part of the decrease, the compromised mammary development is also playing an important role (Tao et al. 2018).

Preparing the mammary gland for the next lactation period require the mammary gland involution for the destruction of the inactive mammary cells and the proliferation of active mammary cells.

Studies have shown that those processes are impaired when dry cows are under heat stress

because of some change at the cell and hormonal level.

The immune response pre and post calving will be reduced when dairy cows are under heat stress during the dry cow period.

Studies have shown a lower immune cells (neutrophils) function after calving and a lower plasma immunoglobulin (IGg) level during the dry cow period (do Amaral et al., 2011).

This will create more health problems after calving.

To add to the negative impact of heat stress during the dry cow period, the calves born from those cows will have lower immunity and reduced milk and reproductive performance.

Heat stress during late gestation will trigger hormonal changes at the placenta and fetal level which will result in lower birth weight (Macko et al., 2017) and lower weight and height at 12 months of age.

The mammary gland development in the fetus will be impaired and the future milk production of those first calf heifers was shown to be reduced by 5 kg per day for at least the first 245 days in milk (Dahl et al., 2016).

These heifers will become pregnant later and will require more services per conception than heifers from cows that were not under heat stress conditions during the dry period.

B vitamins are essential nutrients, being enzyme cofactors with specific functions in the energy and protein metabolism and in the immune response of the dairy cow.

Riboflavin (B2) play specific role in immune cells (neutrophils) production and function, even in reducing oxidative stress along with folic acid (B9).

Liver function is crucial for glucose synthesis, immune response and some specific hormones needed for reproduction.

B vitamins, such as folic acid (B9), riboflavin (B2), B12 and choline, are nutrients involved in the mechanism to reduce liver fat infiltration.

Those same B vitamins when fed as a protected blend during the transition period was shown to increase dry matter intake before calving and up to four weeks after calving (Morrison et al., 2018).

An increase in dry matter intake during this crucial period would be beneficial to reduce the impact of heat stress.

Heat stress during the dry cow period will impact negatively the cow health status and next milk production and reproduction.

Dairy calves born from cow suffering from heat stress in late pregnancy will have lower birth weight, reduced immunity and will produce less milk in their first lactation.

The reduced performance of the cow and her offspring will result in a loss of profit for the dairy producer.

Supplementing a blend of protected B vitamins (Choline, Folic acid, B12 and Riboflavin) before and after calving is an innovative tool to provide ammunitions to dairy cows to counteract the heat stress impact on health, reproduction and milk production.

The benefit of supplementing protected B vitamins during heat stress is even higher than under non-stressful condition.

What can be done to reduce the impact of heat stress during the dry cow period?

The use of cooling systems and a reduction of stocking density are sound management tools to reduce the extent of the heat stress.

Providing clean water along with some nutritional adjustment to the ration will alleviate the risk of reduced performance.

The supplementation of specific protected B vitamins in the diet before and after calving is also beneficial to reduce the negative impact of heat stress.

RECORDING THE INCIDENCE OF METABOLIC DISEASES AT CALVING Recording disease incidence at calving is a critical step in managing metabolic diseases and establishing a successful and productive lactation.

The transition period is defined as the four weeks before and the four weeks after calving.

As the cow is adapting from nonlactating to lactating a lot of changes are occurring, which affect the cow’s hormones and metabolism.

All metabolic processes are intricately linked. A failure of one metabolic process will inevitably impact on the efficiency of others.

During the transition period, there is a greatly increased risk of disease, with 80 per cent of cow health problems happening within this period. If there is a shortage of essential nutrients, the cow may be unable to adapt resulting in a range of diseases, including: ■■ hypocalcaemia and downer cows; ■■

hypomagnesaemia;

■■

ketosis and fatty liver;

■■

immune function.

■■

udder oedema;

■■

■■

abomasal displacement;

There are four aims of transition cow management.

■■

retained foetal membrane (RFM)/ metritis; and

■■

poor fertility and poor production.

There is now a substantial body of evidence confirming the transition period represents a brief but critically important period of time in a cow’s life when careful manipulation of diet can impact substantially on subsequent health and productivity.

As a result of an increased understanding of homeostatic processes, the concept of transition feeding has evolved from one focused on only control of milk fever to an integrated nutritional approach that optimises: ■■ rumen function; ■■

calcium and bone metabolism;

■■

energy metabolism;

■■

protein metabolism; and

Cows should be managed so as to reduce disruption to the rumen, minimise mineral deficiencies, provide sufficient energy around calving and avoid immune suppression.

If these four aims are addressed during the transition period, and a successful lactation is established, cow health targets should be achieved.

■■ Establishing a successful lactation means much more than delivering a live calf. It also means: ■■

a cow with a rumen well adapted to higher energy feeds;

■■

almost no clinical cases of milk fever in the herd;

■■

very low incidence of other cow health problems common in the first two weeks after calving;

■■

low mortality rates in the first two

weeks; ■■

higher herd fertility;

■■

more productive lactations;

■■

less labour and stress from time spent on sick cows;

■■

enhanced animal welfare.

By measuring and recording the incidence of metabolic diseases at calving dairy farmers can compare how many cases they have and compare against industry standards.

If you don’t measure, you won’t know.

Producers should be aiming for <1 per cent incidence of metabolic diseases. If the incidence is >2 per cent, contact your veterinarian or adviser for assistance.

Livestock grazing risks after rain WITH RECENT rain welcomed across some

areas of eastern parts of Australia, the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is urging farmers to be aware of risks to livestock through changes in feed quality and nutrition.

NSW DPI development officer Todd Andrews said recent patchy rain in drought and fireaffected areas had seen some pasture growth develop, which was a great step towards recovery, but could also be deceptive in terms of its nutritional quality for stock.

“Short fresh pasture or ‘green pick’ has a high water content and is low in dry matter, so some stock will not be getting the quantities they need, which can be disastrous for those already in poor condition,” Mr Andrews said.

“Despite its low nutritional value, producers should monitor those animals that ‘chase green pick’ given that it is also highly palatable and an enticing variation to long-term drought rations.

“The low dry matter in the fresh growth could lead to animal health and welfare issues, in lactating cows for example, who have high energy requirements.”

Mr Andrews said drought or fire-affected paddocks had very little fibrous “old growth” left to buffer intake and so it is important to monitor stock during this rapid dietary transition.

“Most of the things that can go wrong — such as clostridial diseases, bloat, nitrate and toxic plant poisonings — cause rapid death, and so prevention strategies are the best approach,” Mr Andrews said.

Producers are encouraged to: ■■ Vaccinate for clostridial diseases such as pulpy kidney and black leg; ■■ Continue supplementary feeding to help transition stock from grain to pasture based diets. Avoid the abrupt dietary change from putting hungry stock into fresh paddocks; ■■ Monitor and control factors that can affect stock herd/flock health including unusual plants and weeds, especially around areas where introduced fodder was fed out; ■■ Be aware of potential nutrient toxicities and deficiencies such as grass tetany along with nitrate/ nitrite and prussic acid poisoning; ■■ Monitor and control internal and external parasites such as worms and blow fly; and ■■ Be mindful of pasture quality and quantity before livestock purchases are undertaken.

DAIRY AUSTRALIA LAUNCHES ‘OUR FARM, OUR PLAN’ Dairy Australia is rolling-out a new farmbusiness management program called “Our Farm, Our Plan”, which is designed to help farmers identify long-term goals, improve business performance and manage volatility.

Our Farm, Our Plan uses a process involving all key decision makers in a farm business to identify how a farm is performing and the steps needed to achieve long-term goals.

“Pricing and climate volatility in recent years have increased the uncertainty and risk of dairy farming,” Dairy Australia managing director David Nation said.

“It is evident that farms with business plans in place are better able to navigate these challenges, as well as take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

“Many dairy farm businesses are run on a huge amount of accumulated knowledge.

“Our Farm, Our Plan provides a simple process which involves all key decision makers in the farm to agree a vision for the business and prioritise areas for improvement, to share the plan easily with other people and to track progress.

“Action to build farm-business skills and improve profitability is a key objective of the Australian Dairy Plan and Our Farm, Our Plan provides an easy to use

resource for farms to identify and achieve their strategic long-term goals, as well as better manage risk.”

Our Farm, Our Plan was developed

by Dairy Australia, with support from Gardiner Dairy Foundation and DairyNZ. It uses a three-step planning process starting with a Farm Fitness Checklist, which focuses on a farm’s current performance and opportunities for improvement.

A QuickPlan allows key decision makers to agree on long-term goals for the business and forms the basis of a Plan on a Page, which summarises actions required to achieve these goals.

The plan can be easily shared with all employees as well as other important stakeholders, such as financial advisers and banks.

It can also be used to track progress.

“Long-term goal setting and business planning have never been more important for Australia’s dairy farms,” Dairy Australia’s farm performance lead Neil Webster said.

“Everyone has plans in their head — getting them down on a page means they’re understood and owned by the key people on the farm.

QLD milk contract claim AN AWARD-WINNING Q u e e n s l a n d

milk company has accused the Queensland Government of “hogwash” after a lucrative contract to supply hospitals went to foreignowned companies.

Sunshine Coast dairy company Maleny Dairies is seeking an urgent meeting with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to explain why it was overlooked in favour of offshore interests.

“The Queensland Government has spent last year saying it will support local Queenslandowned businesses and Queensland jobs and then gives a milk tender to a Chinese and French-owned company,” the company said in a Facebook post challenging the decision.

“Maleny Dairies farmers needed that contract and so did we.

“Local farmers will struggle to stay in business if we can’t get the kind of support that Norco enjoys from their state government (in NSW).”

Maleny Dairies owner and director Ross Hopper said claims his company could not supply enough milk for the Metro North Hospital and Health service’s 19 000 staff and one million patients were rubbish.

He also said the decision made a mockery of the government’s Buy Queensland strategy to support Queensland jobs.

“We’re currently doing over 200 000 litres a week. That tender was only five per cent,” Mr Hopper said last week.

“It’s hogwash. Why would we put the tender

in if we couldn’t supply it?”

In a statement last week, the government spruiked the fact staff and patients would continue to get “fresh milk”, sourced “as much as possible” from Queensland dairies.

It said the government “knows the importance of supporting local providers wherever possible” and pointed out the successful bidder, Lactalis Australia, began with the Pauls milk factory on the banks of the Brisbane River in the 1930s and had a head office at South Brisbane.

But it made no reference to the fact that Lactalis Australia is owned and operated by the Lactalis Group, a French business and the world’s largest fresh dairy company.

A small part of the supply contract will be serviced by Lion dairy, which is owned by Japan’s Kirin Holdings, but is about to be bought by the China Mengniu Dairy Company, with that deal subject to a review by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Queensland Acting Health Minister Leeanne Enoch said the government chose the only tenderer able to supply the full range dairy products needed.

A Metro North spokesperson said Maleny Dairies could not supply enough product to service the contract.

The company, which employs 50 staff and buys milk from 11 Queensland dairy farmers, hopes to secure a meeting with the premier and the health minister.

If you’re away for the day, ensure your home is properly secured including making sure all windows and doors are locked. If you are going to be away for an extended time like holidays, arrange for someone to regularly check on it. NEARLY 700 farms across Australia were affected by theft and burglary in the last year according to WFI Insurance claims data — prompting the insurer to urge people to keep their properties safe and valuables protected.

According to WFI claims data, some of the most common items stolen from farm sheds were power tools, chainsaws, motorbikes and quadbikes.

The most commonly stolen items from homes on farms included personal items such as jewellery and watches, cash, mobile phones and devices, along with keys to vehicles — often resulting in the vehicles also being stolen.

Livestock were also exposed to theft, with WFI claims data showing more than 4000 animals were reported stolen in the last year including sheep, lamb and cattle.

Farmers helping farmers pany AgriWebb is launching The AgriWebb Community — Helping Hand Project, so fireaffected farmers — whether they’re AgriWebb users or not — can get the help they need.

AgriWebb co-founder John Fargher said Australians had been shocked by the scale of destruction caused by the bushfires and the true horror awaited many farmers on their return home.

“Buildings have been destroyed, crops lost, and livestock has perished,” Mr Fargher said.

“There are fears up to 100 000 livestock could be lost. The figures are almost too great to grasp.”

In the face of this crisis, Mr Fargher and the AgriWebb team were keen to contribute to the recovery.

After receiving a number of offers from the AgriWebb community Mr Fargher realised AgriWebb was well placed to make a difference.

“We know there are people out there who want to lend a hand,” Mr Fargher said.

“So we decided we could drive a community project to help connect these people with those who need help.”

The AgriWebb Community — Helping Hand Project aims to connect farmers needing assistance with farmers willing to help.

Australia Day award for pair Two dairy industry leaders have been named in the Australian Day honours list announced in January.

Anne Astin from Melbourne was awarded the OAM for significant service to the dairy industry and to food safety regulations.

In 2010 she also received the Australian Dairy Industry Council’s Outstanding Service Award in recognition of her leadership and services to Australia’s dairy industry, and in 2016 was awarded the Dairy Industry Association of Australia’s John Bryant Gold Medal for outstanding service to the industry.

She has been the non-executive chair of Dairy Food Safety Victoria since 2017 and was the inaugural chief executive between 2000 and 2011.

Dr Astin’s broader community activities have included board membership on Kildare Ministries, a council member of Catholic Social Services Victoria and chair of the William Angliss Institute.

Queensland’s Duncan Alexander MicInnes has been awarded the OAM for

service to agricultural show societies, to the dairy industry and to the broader community.

He is a councillor of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland, serves on its veterinary, biosecurity and animal welfare committee and the joint stock committee.

He was chairman of Dairy Farmers Milk Co-operative between 2013 and 2017 and also served as a director for 13 years.

For many years he was a district secretary with the Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation and has had many roles with the Scenic Rim Regional Council.
