Evolving since 1874
Multi-generational Diers family reects on past, looks ahead By Danna Sabolik
danna.s@dairystar.com
WAVERLY, Minn. – Since 1874, there have been 27 Presidents of the United States. That is how many presidents the Diers family has been operating under. Enduring global tragedies like the Great Depression, as well as personal devastations from farming accidents, the Diers family looks to their past to gain strength and persevere to a brighter future. Today, the Diers Corporation looks a little
different than it did in the 19th Century. The fourth and fth generations operate the day-to-day activities on the farm. Gary and Linda Diers farm with their daughter and son-in-law, Colette and Andy Thorson. They milk 250 cows and farm 900 acres of corn, alfalfa and grass hay near Waverly, Minn. Hermann Diers and his wife, Louise, homesteaded the land in 1874, living in a temporary home until they were able to construct a farmhouse in 1890, where they raised their two boys.

Their son, Edward, grew up and took over the farm with his wife, Lydia. Struggling through the Great Depression in the 1930s, Edward took his own life and forced 12-yearold Roland Diers to step up to
the role as the sole laborer on the farm. “It’s relevant to today because it’s happening today,” Andy said. “The depression, the suicide is happening to farmers right now.”

DANNA SABOLIK/DAIRY STAR
The Diers family kept records of their milk producĆ&#x;on, cost inputs and proďƒžts through all the years of the dairy farm, daĆ&#x;ng back to 1927. depression and everyone knew he had it,â€? Gary said. “There was nothing you could do back then, there was no way to treat those symptoms.â€? Young Roland continued school until his senior year of high school, when the farm took priority and required his full attention. Roland married Evelyn in 1941 and had 10 children, eight surviving to adulthood. Gary was the oldest of these children, and took over the farm in 1969, with his wife, Linda. “When it came to me, there was nothing else I was going to do, I was going to be a dairy farmer or I wasn’t going to be,â€? Gary said. Together he and Linda have ďƒžve children, and today Colette, their youngest daughter, farms with her husband, Andy Thorson, and their three daughters. Andy and Colette met at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. While Colette worked on ďƒžnishing her journalism degree, Andy moved to her home farm and helped out while Colette’s sister took maternity leave. He had the opportunity to live with Roland, Colette’s grandfather, and hear a lot of his stories ďƒžrst hand. Dairy has always been the priority on the farm, although many other species have graced the Diers’ acres. Swine, sheep and chickens have all found their home on the Diers’ farm, but today their primary focus is the dairy animals and the crop farm. Gary farmed with several of his brothers at one time or another. Jerome came to the farm at the time when Roland and Evelyn were retiring. At that point, they decided to incorporate the farm. Diers Corporation came into existence on July 1, 1969. In 2015, the reigns were passed on to Andy and Colette, with heavy involvement in day-to-day operations by Gary and Linda. Today, Colette is in charge of managing the cows and works closely with their herdsperson, Stacy Konerza. “She’s been here for almost eight years now, and she honestly does more with the herd health than I do,â€? Colette said. “I work more with employees and paperwork and managing the FARM program with First District.â€? Her role has changed through the years, but she is grateful for the transparency it has allowed the farm to communicate with their neighbors. “The tools that we have now to work with employees and to make our farm a place that’s pleasant for our employees, the cows and for anyone that comes to visit is very critical with today’s society,â€? Colette said. “It’s something we really have to be aware of.â€? The dairy has always been interested in innovation and has been one step ahead of the curve when it comes to facilities. In 1920, the original barn was constructed and ďƒžt 30 cows. They were milking
24 cows in 1927, when the records begin. According to those early records, some cows were milking 45 pounds a day and that was all done by hand. Along with being impressive statistics, the records also offer sentimental value to the family and were recently found by Gary’s brother, Dwayne, who farmed with him until he retired in 2012. “If [Dwayne] would have brought them to me ďƒžve years ago I probably would have said ‘Cool, that’s really neat,’ but now it has so much more meaning to me because of what we’ve gone through this last year and how hard it’s been and even looking forward,â€? Colette said. “This is really tough.â€? When Colette and Andy took over the farm they set goals of what they planned to accomplish in the coming years. The market for dairy is not what it was predicted then, so there have been some big changes. “We had a lot of goals in 2015 and now a lot of that has changed in the past year,â€? Colette said. “You start looking at what you’re doing, why it’s important, what’s vital to what you need.â€? “God’s timing in all of this has been very humbling,â€? Colette said. “There have been things this year that have solidiďƒžed everything for me going forward.â€? Andy and Colette have three daughters, Mikayla, 16, Malorie, 14 and Victoria, 11. “We’ve got three girls and they’ve gone through the struggle with us,â€? Andy said. Colette agreed. “All summer long I cut back on employees and count on them to help,â€? she said. In addition to making sure the farm is familyoriented, the Thorsons are allowing the girls to develop their own passion for the farm and all are interested in farming to different degrees. “Our goal in the future is to have something to pass on to one of our daughters if they would chose to continue dairy farming,â€? Andy said. To those who say his chances are limited without a son, he points out that this generation of the farm is continuing through a daughter. Farming is clearly in the veins of the Diers family, and by extension the Thorsons. This year is the 50th year of Diers Corporation, and the 145th year of the Diers family farming on their land. Having a rich history they can reference through old record books and photographs at their ďƒžngertips helps the family endure turbulent times, and see that they have overcome big blows in the past. “Hold on to the things that are important to you very loosely because at any point you could lose them,â€? Gary said. “It’s not just about if the farm will survive to the next generation. Farming is a dangerous occupation. How do you hang on to it without it controlling you?â€?

Managing a dairy farm in today’s stormy seas of market volatility, input pricing and labor challenges requires not only a steady hand, but also the ability to react quickly and nimbly to business opportunities. Applications are now being taken for the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association Shayr-A-Heifer program The Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association (WABA) Shayr-A-Heifer program gives young people the opportunity to work with a registered Ayrshire as a project animal. Calves for this program will be spring, winter, or fall calves; suitable for young project members. The calf is selected by a committee of breeders, purchased by WABA, and then placed with the junior project member for them to raise. Ownership of the calf will be on a 50/50 basis with the WABA and the junior member, until the contract ends after two years. At that time the junior member can buy out the heifer or place her on the WABA Spring Sale for 50% of the proceeds. During the project, junior project members will learn about raising their animal, showing, breeding, Ayrshire genetics, and animal husbandry in general. A mentor will be assigned to the youth member to guide them through these steps and enhance their growth. Each year while they have the animal, they will complete a scrapbook and short essay showcasing their work and skills gained. These scrapbooks are eligible for cash prizes at the WABA annual convention. Junior member applicants must be under 21 years of age, Wisconsin residents, interested in learning more about Ayrshires, and have a plan of how to raise and care for their animal. Applications are due by Jan. 20, and can be found on the Facebook page, Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. If needed, a paper application can be mailed. Applicants are invited to attend the WABA Spring Sale on April 20, 2019 at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville, Wis. Here they will be able to see the Ayrshire breed showcased and network with other junior members of the Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. The Shayr-A-Heifer program is a great opportunity for youth to get started in raising dairy heifers, showing and become involved in Ayrshires! For more information, please contact Paul Hetke (715-532-7707), Chris Richards (608-623-2834), or Craig Keller (608-437-5156).

Beginning in Ayrshires grant open for applications The Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association (WABA) is proud to sponsor a dairy farmer grant program. Nationally recognized by the U.S. Ayrshire Breeders Foundation, the Wisconsin Beginning in Ayrshires Grant will help breeders establish themselves in this excellent breed. The successful applicant will be awarded a $1,000 grant from WABA, which will be used to help purchase an Ayrshire cow or calf. The goal of this program is to show existing dairy producers the protability of Ayrshires in their milking herd. Ayrshire dairy cattle are a valuable asset to every dairy farm. They have many positive attributes that are protable for all types of operations, including: low somatic cell counts, higher pregnancy rates, troublefree body composition, functional size, higher fat and protein percent, compete well in grazing and freestall set ups, and many other wonderful attributes. Applicants for this grant can have owned Ayrshires in the past and be looking to expand their herd, or be interested in the breed and looking to buy their rst animal. The successful applicant will be awarded a $1,000 grant from WABA. This money will be given as a certicate, which can be redeemed with the purchase of animals at the annual Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale. This year the sale will be held on April 20 at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Neillsville, Wis. The winner of this grant will be also given a one year free membership to WABA, and assistance and information in the selection of their sale purchase. The grant winner will be announced at the annual meeting on March 2. Their grant money will be rebated after successful purchase of an animal at the Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale in April. To qualify for the grant, a person must fulll these stipulations: – Actively engaged in farming – Age 25 or older – Interested in the Ayrshire breed – Wisconsin resident – Complete and submit an application – Provide two references, professional and personal – Attend Wisconsin Ayrshire Spring Sale Past applicants not awarded are encouraged to reapply. Applications can be found and downloaded on our Facebook page, Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. To have a paper copy of the application mailed to you, please call Richard at 715-307-0537. Applications must be postmarked by Jan. 20. Completed applications should be emailed to richard.franta@gmail.com, or mailed to Richard Franta, 1218 State Street River Falls, WI 54022. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I serve as my county’s alternate dairy princess. I am involved with the FFA organization where I have served the Little Switzerland FFA Chapter as an ofďƒžcer three times. Throughout my FFA career, I have been involved with many contests. My highest achievement in a contest was being a member of the 2018 Iowa FFA State Champion Dairy Evaluation team. I have also shown dairy cattle and swine at my county’s fair every year through the 4-H organization. Through 4-H, I also had the honor of representing the state of Iowa in 2017 at the North American International Livestock Exposition as a youth dairy judger. Why are you involved in these activities/organizations, and what is your favorite? I am involved with these different activities and organizations because of the importance I believe each one holds. These activities teach me life values and lessons I would not be able to attain by myself. My favorite activity would be serving as my county’s alternate dairy princess. During my time as alternate, I have been able to meet countless people from my region and am able to spread a positive voice about the dairy community and what we do. I have also been able to educate area youth about dairy products and other agricultural-related topics. Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. During my reign as alternate dairy princess, I have had opportunities to provide classroom education about the dairy industry. I enjoy working with children and sharing in their excitement to learn about the day-to-day activities on a dairy farm. What’s your favorite social media? Facebook. This outlet allows me to share positive agricultural posts at a time when there is misunderstanding about our industry. I like the fact that Facebook has the ability to connect a large scale of people compared to other social media apps.

Get to know Cayla Nolting of Waukon, Iowa.
What are your career aspirations? To help make a difference, whether it is only by helping in my community or making a larger impact on the world. I am attending Iowa State University in the fall where I will be studying agricultural business with a minor in communications. I want to help farmers in any way I can. I know this may seem like a broad goal, but I want to be able to help families like mine continue to be successful during these tough economic times. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? To not be afraid to take risks and to put yourself out there. Without trying new experiences, I would not be involved in all the activities that I am in. As an ofďƒžcer, I am often asked to give advice to younger members, and I always tell them to follow their hearts because it can lead to amazing things and help them ďƒžnd who they truly are. Who do you look up to? I most look up to my parents. They work 24/7 at a job they love and have instilled in my brother and me the value of a hard day’s work. They have supported me in every activity I have tried, and every organization and competition I have participated in. My mom always tells me that I am capable of achieving anything I put my heart into. Tell us something about yourself that many people don’t know. I was diagnosed at the age of 3 with type 1 diabetes. Throughout the past 15 years, I have met with several newly diagnosed diabetics to help them adjust to the difďƒžculties of living with this disease. I have also talked to various groups about living with diabetes and the insulin pump I use to help control it. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. The main jobs I perform are milking and calf chores such as feeding and bedding. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would love to see small family farms continue to thrive. In
