Udermanns awarded as First District Association’s Young Cooperator of the Year
By Tiffany Klaphake tiffany.k@dairystar.comSARTELL, Minn. —
Alex and Kirsten Udermann stand up for what they believe in and use what they have learned to promote the agriculture industry.
This is one of the reasons why Alex and Kirsten were named First District Association’s 2024 Young Cooperator of the Year. The couple was presented with the award Jan. 6 at First District Association’s annual meeting in St. Cloud.
“We were honored to be even nominated for the YC award and were excited to win,” Alex said. “Once they started reading off a description of the farm and the family at the winter conference, I started to think and nudged Kirsten, ‘Hey, I think they are talking about us.’”
The award is presented by
First District Association each year to a young couple who is actively involved in their farm and the community promoting agriculture.
“What sets us apart is that we believe in giving our time, talent or treasures to people and communities to better the lives of others with no expectation of any compensation,” Alex said. “Gratitude is the best gift.”
The Udermanns are involved with the First District Association’s Young Cooperators board, donate meat annually for their church festival, volunteer at the malt stand at the county fair and participate in eld days.

Wolf shares information about trends in the dairy community
By Emily Breth emily.b@star-pub.comNORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA, Minn. — At the Carver County Dairy and Beef Expo Feb. 19, the keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Wolf, addressed the importance of components, how exports affect the U.S. economy and the industry’s prices.
“We were coming off of pretty high prices in 2022, which was a protable year in general,” Wolf said, of Cornell University. “However, this is the second year in a row that we really didn’t have any milk production growth collectively in the U.S.”
Milk production has been limited in the U.S. due to the lack of storage and processing space among creameries, Wolf said.
Wolf said many milk processors would like to run another shift to process milk sooner and create more storage space.
On the farm, producers have added to their paychecks by increasing components.
“Milk production is at, but butterfat is not,” Wolf said. “2010 is when it took off. We are now averaging 4.5% butterfat.”
Wolf said in the past, people thought consuming animal fat was a negative. However, in recent years, it has been proven otherwise, causing increased demand for butterfat.
“After a long time of being told to not consume animal fat, we are seeing a change,” Wolf said. “Animal fat consumption has gone up, especially in the last 10 years. In response, butterfat prices have gone up.”
Along with this, whole-fat milk is the only form of dairy milk that has experienced increased consumption, Wolf said. Higher demand and increased prices have created the incentive to push for components rather than pounds of milk.
Increasing components is one way farmers can add more to their pay-
checks without being docked for increased volume or incurring hauling charges. However, maximizing components is not possible worldwide.
“Canada has a production quota (for butterfat) that they set each year based on what they think the butterfat consumption they need will be,” Wolf said.
Another change in the dairy community has been the decline in the number of dairy cows and an increase in the number of dairy-beef crossbred cattle.
Wolf said in 2016, 23 million units of dairy semen were sold. In 2021, 7 million fewer units of dairy semen were sold. During this time, beef semen went up 6.5 million units.
“The beef crosses are doing better, so this is a place to make some money,” Wolf said.
Another way farmers can look at their protability is through the demand for dairy foods worldwide through U.S. exports.
Wolf said exports began to climb in 2006.
“Prior to that, we were exporting 4%-5% of U.S. milk production and were importing an equivalent amount of different products,” Wolf said. “We still tend to export bulk commodities like skim milk, some cheese and butter, but we send more powders and proteins.”
The products that the U.S. tends to import are specic cheeses, such as parmesan, or other high-value products. Wolf said the U.S. imports about 3%4% of the dairy products sold nationwide.
“We are competitive with world prices,” Wolf said. “We are less competitive with butter and cheese price because we don’t ship as much compared to the powder.”
While it can be expected that increased exports would play a major role in the price farmers receive for their milk, a fair amount of the product does not go far.
“43% of U.S. dairy exports go to two places: Mexico and Canada,” Wolf said. “In 2014 and 2022, when China imported a lot from us, we had good milk prices. When China comes in, they move (the whole market).”

“We switched to no-till and cover crops a few years ago,” Alex said. “I have taken our corn planter to eld days hosted by Stearns, Benton and Morrison counties to demonstrate what we do and have been on farmer panels to promote and educate on no-till and cover crops and the benets to other farmers.”
The couple said being involved is important to them.
“The biggest reason I like being on boards and going to events is because I don’t like just sitting here listening to politicians make rules and regulations for us or the general public criticizing us,” Alex said.
Equally important to Alex is the value of networking with others.
“It’s great to meet and make new friends and have someone to call if you have a question about something,” Alex said. “I also want to make sure consumers and politicians are educated on modern farming practices, and that we can change and do better if we all work together.”
Kirsten agreed.
“You meet a lot of neat people, and you get to have a voice in your cooperative and local communities too,” she said.
Alex and Kirsten and his brother, Jake, and parents, John and Mary Lou, operate Meadowbrook Dairy near Sartell.
Alex, Kirsten, Jake and John are all employed full time on the farm. Mary Lou helps milk in the mornings before work. Together, they milk 80 cows in a tiestall barn and raise replacements as well as steers.
At Meadowbrook Dairy, the Udermanns breed their top animals with sexed semen and all others to Angus. The family sells beef from their farm.
“My main goal is to make the farm as protable and sustainable as possible,” Alex said. “We strive for higher efciency to do better with what we have. I also want to give the sixth generation a better opportunity to farm. It is really about setting up the next generations for success.”
Additionally, the family custom hauls liquid and solid manure and custom plants no-till and cover crops.
“My goal is if someone wants to try it out on a 40-acre eld just to get their feet wet, we can help them start small without them investing a lot of money in equipment,” Alex said.
Alex and Jake, the fth generation on the family farm, started experimenting with no-till and cover crops in 2016
to save time and money. The more they learned about regenerative agriculture practices, the more they liked the results.
“Healthy soil means better crops, which means better feed for the cows,” Alex said. “That’s going to mean healthier cows and better-quality milk and meat. It’s a never-ending regenerative cycle. That’s why we continue to do it. There’s no downside to it. We’ve had great success and keep investing in educating our farm about soil biology.”
The farm became certied with the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certication Program and enrolled in the Conservation Stewardship Program.
The Udermanns have been using 100% no-till farming practices for three years. They mainly use rye as a cover crop as well as oat and radish and would like to add a multi-species legume mix to replenish nitrogen.
“We sold all of our tillage equipment and four-wheel drive equipment,” Alex said. “We save so much time and money on maintenance with having less equipment.”
Alex also credits having cattle to the success of their regenerative agricultural practices.
“We couldn’t do all the no-till and cover cropping that we do without the livestock,” Alex said. “The cattle are a huge asset to us. Cattle are the secret sauce to achieving healthy functioning soil.”
Alex said there is a lot to learn about no-till farming practices and cover crops. He wants to learn all that he can, not only to better their family farm but to share with other farmers and those not directly involved with agriculture.
“I have found my niche with the no-till and cover cropping,” Alex said. “I found something I am good at, and I enjoy doing. It makes me feel good to help someone else switch over.”
Whether it is sharing the message of consuming dairy products, regenerative agriculture or dairy farming in general, Alex and Kirsten are willing and eager to share their experience to others.
“We have a lot going on,” Alex said. “But, (cooperatives) need young people on the boards to help run them. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it. If you have an opportunity to volunteer your time, talents or treasures, please do. Sometimes just showing up is all that it takes to make an impact on someone else’s life.”
Reducing red tape for additives in livestock feed
Bill aims to support innovation
By Jan Lefebvre jan.l@star-pub.comWASHINGTON — A bill in the U.S. Congress called the Innovative FEED Act could loosen U.S. Food and Drug regulations for how livestock feed additives are categorized and approved.
Specically, the bill aims to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the regulation of zootechnical animal food substances.
If passed, the wording in current regulations would be amended to free up innovation and simplify the approval for the use of additives that have shown results in reducing food pathogens and/or diminishing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.
Many groups in the agriculture industry, including the National Milk Producers Federation, are behind the bill
and rallying for its passage.
Paul Bleiberg, executive vice president of government relations for NMPF, said the bill is greatly needed.
“The FDA previously regulated feed additives of this nature as drugs, even though they are not medical and move solely through the animal’s digestive tract,” Bleiberg said. “This had the effect of slowing down product reviews because the agency’s New Animal Drug Application process is both costly and cumbersome.”
The FDA posted a letter Feb. 2, signifying it recognized the need for change. It announced it will withdraw its policy regarding when animal feed ingredients can be classied as animal drugs. Currently, this is determined in part by claims made about the health and environmental benets the additives can bring.
“Additionally, FDA is working with Congress in seeking new legislative authority for a clear regulatory
pathway for substances added to animal food or drinking water that function in the gut of an animal in one of three ways,” the FDA’s letter said. “These substances may affect the microbiome of the animal, affect the byproducts of the digestive process or reduce pathogens in food products made from the animal.”
Bleiberg said NMPF commends the FDA for withdrawing the policy but wants to see the bill enacted for clarity in the classication of feed additives and for streamlining the approval process.
ent review of these products, enabling U.S. dairy farmers to act quickly and proactively on enteric methane reductions while maintaining global competitiveness.”
“To nish the job, we are working closely with Congress to enact (the bill) to provide FDA the clear authority to review and approve enteric methane-reducing animal feed ingredients using the agency’s Food Additive Petition,” Bleiberg said. “Enactment of the bill would allow for the safe but expedi-
The bill has wide bipartisan support and was rst introduced in the U.S. Senate June 8, 2023, by Roger Marshall, R-Kan., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., Jerry Moran, RKan., and Michael Bennet, D-Colo. It was introduced in the U.S. House Dec. 7, 2023, by Greg Pence, R-Ind., Angie Craig, D-Minn., Jim Baird, R-Ind., and Kim Schrier, DWash.
Bleiberg said he hopes the bill will be enacted quickly.
“We are working to enact the bill within the next couple of months, ideally as part of a larger legislative package,” Bleiberg said. “To get that done, we continue to build support and cosponsors for the measure in both the
House and Senate. We recently launched an advocacy alert to give farmers the ability to reach out directly to their members of Congress.”
On her website, Baldwin addressed the issue current regulations create on a global level.
“Currently, global competitors in Europe, Asia and South America have updated their policies to have feed products on the market that demonstrate increased efciency in meat production and byproduct and waste reduction, creating an unlevel playing eld for American producers,” Baldwin said. “The FDA does not have a timely and appropriate pathway for these innovative feed products to be approved for market. … These products use the FDA’s process for animal drugs, an eight- to 10year approval process, or feed ingredients, approximately a two-year process.”

Marshall issued a similar statement and highlighted the innovations being created with livestock feed additives.
“There are products that could address heat stress in livestock, products that would reduce nitrogen and phosphorus in manure to help feedlot operators comply with federal and state regulations, products to reduce the presence of food-borne pathogens in animal feed, or even to reduce the amount of ammonia in swine manure reducing its smell,” Marshall said. … “As the original conservationists, farmers and ranchers steward the land and rely on feed additives to improve the quality and efciency of meat and dairy. However, innovation to meet these growing demands has stalled due to outdated, one-size-ts-all federal policies.”
U.S. by Elanco Animal Health, have a proven track record of being able to reduce enteric methane emissions by as much as 30%,” Bleiberg said. “The product is already approved in EU countries, Australia, Brazil, Chile, and most recently in the U.K. and Canada. We have worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to

position voluntary conservation programs to support producers as they begin uptake of feed additives once approved.”
For instance, through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program, the USDA awarded funds to numerous NMPF members and partners last fall to support the adoption of innovative feed ingredients, Bleiberg said.
Bleiberg said a number of innovative products already have well-established results.
“Feed ingredients like Bovaer, or 3-NOP, which is sponsored in the

Tell us about your chapter. Our chapter is all student-run; we have 65% females and 35% males. We are a chapter that offers membership for students in grades 7-12. We participate in Leadership Development Events, Career Development Events and agriscience and have an extremely strong Supervised Agricultural Experience program with multiple students being recognized at the state and national level annually.
How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? Our chapter volunteers in the community by feeding the farmers every spring and fall, and we have also helped serve food at steak dinners. We also grow owers in our greenhouse and donate them to the nursing home for Valentine’s Day.
We also work at the annual trunk-or-treat event as well as donate to the Rural Community Food Pantry multiple times throughout the year. Every fall, we help sell collectible toy tractors at the Summer Farm Toy Show hosted in our school. Recently, we attended the Pioneer meeting where we listened to speakers and served them dinner afterward.
What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? Throughout the year, our chapter does a fruit, Edgewood Locker meat and WW Homestead Dairy cheese curd sale. New this spring, with the addition of the greenhouse,
we will be having a Mother’s Day plant sale featuring hanging baskets, owers and vegetables. These fundraisers help us cover the cost of trips for members. The most successful fundraiser is our annual fruit, meat and cheese fundraiser held annually in October.
What are the biggest events of the year? Our chapter’s big events include our annual degree night and annual chapter banquet, as well as trips to district, state and national events. As we have

Con nued from FFA | Page 10 entered our sixth year, we continue to expand and grow our events and chapters. We just added a greenhouse in the past year and are excited to host community events and workshops using that in the near future as well.
What is unique about your chapter? We have too many things that make our chapter unique. We are a grade 7-12, so we have junior high membership as well. We are a unique chapter in which, annually, over 40 members in grades 7-12 compete in agriscience research in the six different pathways: animal systems, environmental and natural resource systems, food products and processing systems, plant systems, power structural and technical systems, and social systems. Students’ projects are self-developed and implemented.
Tell us about your farm and family. I grew up on our family farm, E&A Dairy, near Bankston, Iowa. Our family farm was started ve generations ago, and I am the sixth generation. We milk 120 Holstein, Jersey and Holstein-Jersey crosses. In addition, we have 160 acres of corn and alfalfa as well as pasture. I work daily alongside my parents, Eric and Amanda Gaul, along with my younger brother, Adam, who is a sophomore, and my sister, Claire, who is a freshman.
Why did you join FFA? When I walked into the halls of Beckman Catholic High School as a seventh grader in the fall of 2018, it was the rst year that FFA was ofcially chartered as our own chapter. I believed this would be a
When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? In 2014, a sharing arrangement was created that allowed Beckman Catholic High School juniors and seniors to take animal science and crop science courses with Maquoketa Valley Community School District in Delhi, Iowa, which opened them to FFA membership. After two years, the opportunities expanded with the sharing arrangement to include grades 9-12. In 2014, 18 students took advantage of the sharing arrangement, and it continued to grow. In the spring of 2018, the program grew so much that Beckman Catholic chartered its own chapter with 51 members May 1, 2018. Our chapter grew from the original 51 to 148 members in grades 7-12 today. The journey has been one that has had Mrs. Mausser as the adviser every step of the way.

great opportunity to do things I enjoyed in agriculture and learn along with others. I had the opportunity to have six positive years of FFA experience.
What is your role in the chapter? As a senior, I am currently the president of my chapter.
What FFA contests do you compete in? Dairy cattle evaluation, ag mechanics, ag impact, ag CSI and agricscience research.
What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? As my senior year and FFA membership winds down, the things that I’m most looking forward to are my upcoming state convention trip in April where I will get to represent our chapter as we receive our National Chapter Award. This was something that our ofcer team worked very hard on this last year. In addition, I’m looking forward to the ag mechanics contest this spring. We had a very successful showing last year at state, and I hope to be able to improve upon that third-place nish last year. I also will be showing dairy cattle at the county fair, and I’m looking forward to spending time in the barns with friends.
How has FFA shaped you as a person? I will admit that as a seventh grader, if you had told
me that I would be FFA president someday, I would have said you were crazy. However, over time, I have increased my public speaking skills and leadership skills, and it has developed me into the person that I am today. I’m willing to stand up for what I believe in as well as advocate for our industry thanks in part to FFA and my agriscience experiences. In agriscience, I have solved real-world problems, including building my own hydroponic system in my basement during the pandemic as well as developing paper gaskets that are 3D printed to assist in downtime on farms. They have made me think about the amount of money that is spent on some of those things as well as how simple solutions can get the job done. I enjoy getting to meet people from all over the world, and FFA has truly helped me to do that. This last year, I was the rst male president in Beckman Catholic FFA history. It has been an adventure. Every style of leader is completely different, and I learned that it is OK to delegate and ask for help. It was my rst year as an ofcer, and I worked alongside six female ofcers on my team. It was a wonderful experience. I look forward to the new ofcer team being elected and sworn in at our banquet April 1.
What are your duties on the farm? My duties on the farm include milking cows, feeding heifers and doing eldwork as well as doing maintenance on equipment around the farm.
What are your future plans? My future plans are to continue to be a diesel mechanic at Simon’s Trucking, where I started through our school’s mentoring program and used as part of my SAE project, and I will continue on the family dairy farm. A lifelong goal would be to own the farm in the future.
When do you do chores? I help with chores at night after school, on the weekends and days we don’t have school.

What is your favorite game to play on the farm? I like to play tag with my little brothers. I also like to do ips and things like that. I am really good at gymnastics. I was born to be exible.
What is your favorite meal that your mom or dad makes? I love to eat corn on the cob with lots of butter.
What is your favorite thing to do off the farm with your family? I like to go swimming with my family. I have never gone ice shing, but I would really like to. We have ice shing poles.
When do you do chores? I help with chores when I’m not going to school.
What is your favorite and least favorite chore? I like feeding calves because they are cute. I don’t like washing cows because they sometimes kick.
What project do you enjoy helping your parents with on the farm? I like helping Dad with building the new barn.
Tell us a fun memory you have of living on the farm. I like having fun with the cows.
What is your favorite animal on your farm? I have lots of favorites: Magic the cat, Gopher the dog, and my favorite cows are Pumpkin, Dells, Cherry, Fruity and Acorn, who is Pumpkin’s daughter. Pumpkin is going to have another calf soon.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a hoof trimmer. I like when the hoof trimmer comes. His name is Dave.
If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have horses, pigs, cows, dogs, cats and chickens. It would be a big farm, and I would have red tractors.
What is your favorite game to play on the farm? I like to play hide-and-go-seek and tag.
What is your favorite meal that your mom or dad makes? My favorite is the ham, parmesan and spinach hot dish my mom makes. I like hamburgers too.
