Building a generational farm

Cracraft works with son to improve dairy operation for tomorrow

BRILLION, Wis. – Matt Cracraft found a love for farming at a young age. Though he did not call a farm his home, he grew up helping dairy farmers. This work solidied what Cracraft knew all along — he wanted to be a dairy farmer.

“They say farming is in your blood, and I think it really is,” Cracraft said.

Cracraft worked to achieve his goal of owning a farm, and, in 2016, he and his wife, Renee, bought a dairy near Brillion. Cracraft has discovered that being a farmer is second to the joy of sharing that farm with his son, Grant. The desire to farm burns strong in the younger Cracraft as he eagerly follows in his dad’s footsteps at age 11.

“I always tell Grant, ‘This isn’t my farm, it’s our farm,’” Cracraft said. “It’s exciting to see the next generation interested. Grant is the future of this farm. He also has a one-year-old brother, Brooks, who might be interested in farming too.”

The Cracrafts milk about 73 cows and farm 200 acres. They receive help from a part-time employee and Renee’s family, who also dairy farm.

“Renee’s family helped us when we didn’t have machinery, and they continue to plant our corn because I don’t have a planter,” Cracraft said. “When we have a big project, everyone comes together.”

Cracraft also receives support from his parents, who help in any way they can, including running errands for their son.

“My dad always said, ‘If you’re willing to do the work, anything is possible – the sky’s the limit,’” Cracraft said.

Before buying his operation, Cracraft worked on a farm in Two Rivers and participated in Lakeshore Area Network for Dairy program. This program assists those planning to enter or exit dairy farming by pairing retiring farmers with younger people. During that time, Cracraft bought heifers and calved them in, growing his herd to 20 head.

“I did half of the chores and received half of the milk check while building up equity,” he said.

Through an opportunity at another farm Cracraft bought into a herd with plans to potentially purchase. However, the man who owned the farm Cracraft now owns called him with an even bigger opportunity.

“I laid in bed at night wondering what to do,” Cracraft said. “It was the worst decision to make. I got to know those other people, but this farm was a better t for us.”

Cracraft kept his registered cattle and bought half of the cows when he purchased the farm. He had a full barn when he started, milking between 45-50 cows.

“A lot of things are different since we bought the farm,” Cracraft said. “We always try to do little things each year to improve. It makes a big difference, and it’s fun to see our vision come to life as we complete projects. It’s important to me to keep the buildings looking nice.”

The Cracrafts added more stalls to the milking and dry cow barns and drive-by feeding for the dry cows and heifers, put in headlocks for heifers and installed new mats in the tiestall barn.

“We keep cow comfort at the top of our list,” Cracraft said.

The Cracrafts also added more fans to the barn to keep their milking herd cool, put in a bigger bulk tank, bought a new mixer and changed the barn cleaner.

“I applied for a grant for manure storage,” Cracraft said. “Right now, we haul manure daily, and I feel like that will really change how we farm. We (also) could may-

be do more with cover crops.”

Cracraft said building a new barn for dry cows and heifers is a possibility, and he is also thinking about adding an activity monitoring system.

“I’ve seen its success on farms,” Cracraft said. “There is technology that even smaller farms can utilize. Our approach is to do a better job with what we have — from the land that we farm to improving our facilities for better cow comfort.”

In addition to farming, Cracraft serves on the Wayside Volunteer Fire Department and is an A.I. technician for Select Sires Inc. He has been a technician for 16 years and breeds every day if needed, covering a 100-mile territory.

“It gets to be a lot of miles, but I enjoy it,” Cracraft said. “You get to know a lot of people, and it keeps me up on genetics

and trends in the industry and as far as what bulls people are using.”

Being a farmer helps Cracraft connect with customers.

“I hope what I do here on the farm is insight for them and vice versa,” he said. “When I’m at farms breeding cows, I get ideas.”

The Cracraft herd of Holsteins and Red and Whites is mostly registered and includes several Excellent cows.

“I like type, but I try not to just focus on that,” Cracraft said. “I look for health traits, and daughter pregnancy rate is big for me. I also watch components.”

Cracraft has changed his breeding philosophy, moving away from extreme type towards functional type.

“We’re not trying to be more than what we are,” he said. “I want good-scoring, good-producing, problem-free cows. It’s always been a dream of mine to take something to Madison, but we haven’t quite gotten there yet.”

Last year, the Cracrafts had the Red and White grand reserve supreme champion at the Manitowoc County Fair.

“I like cows as much as anything,” Cracraft said. “I don’t mind sitting on a tractor for a few hours, but I would rather be in the barn. Everything we have is because of the cows.”

Grant owns four animals in the herd — three cows and one heifer — including a Red and White cow he bought as a calf.

“We use a nice selection of bulls, and when Grant asks if I have a certain bull, I can see if I have it in the tank,” Cracraft said.

Grant helps with mixing feed, milking and feeding cows, taking care of equipment and working the land, which also includes picking out seed.

“He greases things, puts hitches on and nds things I didn’t see,” Cracraft said. “He’s very observant.”

Cracraft said he considers his son a partner even though he is still a child. The pair bounces ideas off each other, and Cracraft respects his sidekick’s opinion.

“Grant gives us input even though he’s 11,” Cracraft said. “I want him to feel like he’s part of this.”

Blue sky creates a backdrop May 14 to Ma and Renee Cracra ’s farm near Brillion, Wisconsin. The Cracra s purchased this farm in 2016 and make updates every year to improve their opera on.

As a father and a friend, Cracraft encourages his son’s enthusiasm for farming and likes taking him to farm shows.

“There are so many things that are not fun about dairy and agriculture, and I want him to see the good, fun, exciting things too,” Cracraft said. “If you don’t show them the fun side of farming, they might not want to continue.”

The Cracrafts ship their milk to Scenic Central Milk Producers.

“My approach has always been, if you’re going to do something, do the best job you can,” Cracraft said. “My

goal is to create good cows. If we have good-quality milk and do a good job, I think there will always be a place for us.”

Sharing his farm with his son is the highlight of his career, Cracraft said. The father/son duo is working towards the same dreams and goals as they build their operation together.

“It’s just as much Grant’s farm in my opinion, and I’m happy he gets to share this with me,” Cracraft said. “I want to pass the farm onto the next generation.”

Preventing mold proliferation in hay bales

This article is reprinted with permission from the Midwest Forage Association. Many factors affect dairy sustainability and protability. Feeding large amounts of high-quality forages positively impacts both of these aspects. But farmers face a myriad of challenges to grow, harvest and store forages while maintaining nutritive value. Even though some losses are unavoidable, poor hay management may increase dry matter losses up to 30% due to spoilage. These losses decrease feed efciency, as each percentage-unit lost as DM is a percentage-unit of forage that cannot be converted into milk or body gain of growing animals. Spoilage also reduces the nutritive values of forages and feeds, potentially increases the emission of greenhouse gases, and becomes a major source of undesirable microorganisms. Moisture. Moisture is the primary factor inuencing hay spoilage. Dry matter losses and changes in nutritive value begin as soon as plants are harvested and continue until preserved feed is consumed. The need for rapid eld wilting is well recognized, but accomplishing this can be a challenge, especially with unexpected weather. Bales are more likely to spoil when hay is baled above certain moisture thresholds. Small bales (under 100 pounds) have a threshold of 20% moisture, whereas large bales (over 1,000 pounds) would ideally be baled with less than 16-18% moisture. But eld drying rate will depend on plant structure, swath structure, and soil and environmental conditions.

Losses are limited in dry hay with less than 15% moisture. This is because storage losses are caused by the activity of undesirable aerobic microorganisms, especially molds. However, when moisture is under 15%, their activity is minimal. But losses can be at least 25% when hay is baled with moisture over 20%. Keep in mind, hay moisture concentration has opposing effects on losses at harvest and during storage. Field DM losses are higher in drier hay because of leaf fragility during forage manipulation. This issue is more challenging in alfalfa than grass. A 5% increase in leaf loss can decrease protein by 1.2% while increasing neutral detergent ber by 2.2% in alfalfa samples. Hay baled too wet can also undergo heat damage. If enough heat is generated by the aerobic bacteria fermentation of proteins in sugars, several chemical reactions occur binding protein and sugars (Maillard reaction). A sweet smell combined with a tobacco-brown color is typical when this reaction occurs. But even though hay becomes more palatable, nutritive value is compromised as

protein availability is reduced; insoluble protein measurements (i.e., acid detergent insoluble crude protein, neutral detergent insoluble protein) increase.

If hay is rained on before or after baling but before storage, similar issues occur when baling wet hay. Under cool and wet conditions, even well-baled hay can absorb moisture. Storing hay in a dry, well-ventilated shed minimizes the risk of mold. Increasing ventilation in the storage area, having space between bales for airow, stacking bales in alternate directions, and reducing the size of stacks may improve drying conditions during storage. Preservatives. Organic acid-base preservatives are commonly used to reduce spoilage in high-moisture hay. These preservatives limit growth of bacteria and fungi but are often considered inconsistent. A study conducted by researchers from Maine and Virginia looked at the effects of various additives on hay preservation. This study reviewed 62 articles and evaluated propionic acid, buffered organic acids, other types of organic acids, urea, anhydrous ammonia and microbial inoculants.

Propionic acid, buffered organic acids and other types of organic acids reduced DM losses, moldiness, maximum temperature and insoluble protein concentration. But these preservatives were less effective in legume and mixed hay than grass hay. Legume hay required about four times the application rate than grass hay to maintain a similar maximum temperature. This is similar to the issues with buffering capacity when ensiling legumes. But microbial preservatives did not improve hay preservation although in silage they often have a positive response. Greater doses of organic-acid-based preservatives were also required when baling hay with higher moisture. Variations in moisture, storage conditions and the crop baled explain inconsistencies observed with preservatives. A good preservative cannot replace proper management and does not work in every condition.

A Risk to Animals and Humans. Heating and mold not only reduce the nutritive value, but also produce dust and spores. Dust is a combination of deteriorated hay particles, mold organisms and spores. Spores could cause respiratory problems for both humans and animals. Using a dust mask when working with moldy hay is advised.

As in silage and haylage management, moldy hay should be discarded. Even though ruminant animals are less sensitive to yeasts and molds than horses, detrimental effects such as reduced intake and impaired performance will occur. Molds can produce mycotoxins, which in high amounts could be harmful to animals.

The program will include a general session for all attendees to practice stockmanship skills and put theory into practical application while implementing handling skills in pens with dairy cattle.

Attendees will break into smaller groups to attend three repeating sessions focused on the technical essentials of the footbath, identifying treatment options for chronically lame cows, and discussing practices that create continuous improvements in hoof health to reduce the strain lameness places on cows and team members.

This program is accredited for up to 4 Dairy AdvanCE continuing education credits and up to 4 ARPAS continuing education credits.

The West Central Dairy Days Cattle Show will be Friday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds in Willmar. Ages 5 - 21 can exhibit. There are classes for all eight dairy breeds. Each exhibitor receives a cash entry award based on years exhibiting

During this webinar, attendees will learn how the use of monitoring technologies has helped dairies in the United States improve their reproduction management processes – driving an increase in performance. This increased performance leads to a more protable and sustainable environment. By pairing university research data with real-life dairy examples, Lopes will provide a solid base for this discussion. Additionally, he will share trial results from Cornell University, University of Florida-Gainesville and University of Wisconsin-Madison that have answered questions related to the inclusion of these technologies in large-scale dairy operations. Going beyond reproductive efciency, Lopes will describe how the use of these technologies can help dairy producers and their veterinarians make more informed decisions about overall management — leading to improved cow health and productivity. Registration is online.

“We’re thrilled to offer employers the chance to invest in their interns’ growth and development through PDP Accelerate,” said Amber Cafferty, marketing and development coordinator at PDP. “This event isn’t just about learning; it’s about empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders to excel in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.”

PDP Accelerate will be facilitated by Michael Hoffman, founder and owner of Igniting Performance Inc., a Dallas-based company that specializes in the skills of sales, customer loyalty and leadership. Hoffman will combine hands-on learning, peer networking and interactive skill practice to ensure interns build the skills they need to excel after college.

Interns will emerge from PDP Accelerate armed with the ability to initiate meaningful conversations, leverage technology effectively, exude condent body language, navigate diverse team dynamics, solicit and implement constructive feedback, and expand their professional networks — all essential attributes for success in the modern workforce.

Learn more about PDP Accelerate and register interns by visiting www.pdpw.org or calling 800-947-7379.

Blair-Taylor

Tell us about your chapter. We have a strong FFA chapter in Blair-Taylor. We have won the membership award at the state convention for the past two years and have had increasing participation in activities every year. Members have traveled to judge at World Dairy Expo, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and leadership development event contests. Six members have completed prociency and received gold, silver and bronze. The goal is to increase that number every year and have some members apply for their state degree this coming year.

How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? We work at events such as the Blair Cheese Festival and the Taylor FFA Memorial Day Tractor and Truck Pull, which is hosted annually to help the two alumni groups that support us greatly throughout the year. At each of these events, members serve food, walk in the parade, help with admissions and registration, and many other things. During January we do a Christmas tree pick up, and July 3, we serve cheese curds and milk-

shakes at Fireworks over Blair. Each year we add more events, and we are looking forward to adding more.

What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? Which is the most successful? We have two main fundraisers throughout the year with the addition of our greenhouse sale in the spring. We sell the famous FFA fruit, nuts and popcorn in the fall, which is always a huge hit in our community; we do very well on this. The Blair-Taylor FFA also sells strawberries in the spring. This one is slowly coming into our program, but we do well with them as well. Our most successful fundraiser is either of these as our

community has so much support for our program and we are able to prot greatly from these to put back towards leadership conferences and conventions for the kids.

What are the biggest events of the year? The biggest events of the year would probably be the Blair Cheese Fest and Taylor Pull as we focus on the community and get to give back to those who support us. We also have an Elementary Agriculture Day where the entire elementary comes out to learn about all the fun agriculture stations our members design. It’s always a hit.

What is unique about your chapter? The most unique thing about our chapter is how excited the middle school members get to participate and reap the benets of their volunteering. They love to sign up for events and be active! We also have two alumni groups, which is super unique but is so fortunate for our members because of the endless support we get from each one.

Tell us about your family and farm. My parents are Nathan and Karen Kling, and we dairy farm near Taylor. I have one younger brother, Justin, and an older sister, Grace. Our family farms about 2,000 acres and owns two 250cow dairies; one is an organic pasture-based operation, and the other is a conventional robotic dairy. We also do some custom chopping and manure hauling. I also raise show steers and show pigs.

Why did you join FFA? I joined FFA because my family has all been involved in FFA and I wanted to help educate the public about where their food comes from and how well farmers treat their animals.

What is your role in the chapter? I am the president this year, so I am responsible for helping recruit new members, run meetings and organize events with the help of my chapter. I enjoy making connections with students and sharing what I know about agriculture. I look forward to new

When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? From our ndings, the Blair FFA Chapter was founded in January 1930, and Taylor FFA was chartered in April 1943. Since then, we have joined to be one, Blair-Taylor FFA, and have maintained a strong, passionate group advocating for agriculture. Our program has gone in spurts with membership, but we have been on an uphill climb in numbers and participation and our goals each year keep growing. We are very proud and excited to see where Blair-Taylor FFA grows next.

ways to continue to serve my chapter.

What FFA contests do you compete in? I have competed in dairy cattle evaluation, livestock judging, FFA quiz bowl and dairy products judging.

What do you look forward to the most in the upcoming year of FFA?

I am looking forward to attending the National FFA Convention in the fall. I enjoy this because I am able to meet new people, see new places and gain ideas from other chapters for recruitment and involvement that we can use to strengthen our local chapter.

How has FFA shaped you as a person? FFA has made me into a completely different person than I was when I started. I have gained more condence in public speaking from running meetings and doing various career development events. I also learned lots of social skills, met many new friends, got out of my comfort zone and got the opportunity to travel across the country. It also fueled my love for agriculture and let me teach others about the way we feed the world.

What are your duties on the farm? I have been helping out on the farm ever since I was little whether it was riding in the tractor with Dad or playing with the baby calves. My duties have since increased to milking cows, feeding calves, cleaning barns and assisting with other various tasks on the farm. I

Tell us about your farm and family. We are a family farm where we milk 60 cows and have about 500 acres that are mostly rented. We just built a new barn that is a parlor freestall set-up. We also run all Massey Ferguson tractors and combines that we work on ourselves.

Why did you join FFA? I joined FFA because I wanted to be an ofcer and make an impact on the chapter and our communities.

What is your role in the chapter? I am vice president for this year and have been the treasurer for the past couple of years. I aid the president in running the chapter and step up in his absence.

What FFA contests do you compete in? I have judged cattle and dairy products at World Dairy Expo and at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for the career development event contests. I hope to branch out and do a speaking contest this year.

What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? Doing all

also help with eldwork whether it’s tillage and planting in the spring, making hay all summer, or hauling manure in the fall.

the activities we normally do as an FFA chapter while adding on to the success we have created with new, exciting events.

How has FFA shaped you as a person? I have become more social and talk to more people rather than just my family. I also have gained many other skills that will translate to my life after high school along with the connections I’ve created with other chapters.

What are your duties on the farm? I milk cows, do eldwork and watch my nephews.

What are your future plans? To keep working on the farm and build it better every year.

What are your future plans? I am aiming to go to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for animal science and to pursue a career in that eld or come back to the family farm.
