BROWERVILLE, Minn. – After spending his entire dairy career renting facilities, an opportunity to purchase a farm site afrmed Trevor Lisson’s calling to milk cows. “We looked at a lot of farms to purchase and even considered building, but none of those worked out,” Lisson said. “This, here, was meant to be.” Lisson and his family – wife Alexandria and sons Thomas, 2, and Kolbe, 1 – milk 52 cows on a 150-acre farm site in Todd County near Browerville that Lisson purchased from Todd and Jean Pollema June 14, 2019. The property includes a tiestall barn and multiple facilities to accommodate youngstock, springing heifers and dry cows; calves are housed in hutches on the south side of the property. Lisson connected with the Pollemas nearly by happenstance. He was working with his farm business management instructor and nancial lender to develop a plan for building a new farm site when word of the Pollemas’ property became known. “Todd told me to swing in and look at the place,” Lisson. “We knew it was a perfect t for what we wanted. They came up with a price and it was something we were comfortable with.” With an updated facility and new house built on the property in 2005 and 2007, respectively, coupled with land and an opportunity to grow that land base in the future, Lisson had discovered a farm site he could not look away from. Within three months, the transaction was complete. “This had everything we were looking for. The barn was built for a high-producing herd, and it aligns with my style of dairy farming,” Lisson said. “It was the perfect situation.” In total, Lisson farms 210 acres near Browerville and

Staples. This past spring, he entered a contract for deed agreement to purchase an additional 70 acres of land that is south of the original 80-acre farm site, bringing the total acres at the Browerville location to 150. “My farm is far away from the other land I run, but with family in Staples it is a lot more manageable to keep up,” Lisson said. “With my younger brother coming back to help my dad milk his cows, it’s been easier for everyone.” The young farmer began milking cows in 2012. At the time, he rented facilities from his uncle near Staples. After about four years, Lisson relocated to another rented
farm site and invested in an irrigation system and made improvements on soil health. He also continually grew his herd to maximize prots from production. However, because of issues on the property outside of Lisson’s control, he was stuck at a crossroads in his dairying career. “I got to the point that I was mentally tired of farming, but if I did build, I knew I’d be taking on a lot of debt,” he said. “That was really waning on me and the commitment

At the same time, we had our rst son on the way and I was thinking differently about what I wanted for my family and our future.” Lisson was able to purchase his new farm site with nancial assistance from his local bank and a small loan from the United States Department of Agriculture as a young farmer. “I didn’t have a lot of debt going into this purchase, and I think that’s why the purchase went through so quickly,” Lisson said. “My grandparents and parents taught me how to manage
money. If you spend a dollar, you better make it back and don’t be wasteful.” The farmer also noted how well he and the sellers worked together. “Todd and Jean went above and beyond to make sure the place was ready for us to move in,” he said. “They made sure things were running well and we’d be off to a good start. They are amazing people.” Prior to moving to the property, Lisson downsized his herd. He spent the previous years building his herd and production as

he tried to offset the consequences of stray voltage. The new-to-him barn has facilitated a healthier, more productive herd. “This barn was made for the type of cows I have,” Lisson said. “My workload is less, and the cows are happier and healthier. Everything is better. It’s been awesome, knock on wood.” While the setup has aided in an overall better milking herd, not much of Lisson’s management has changed. He continues to house and care for his youngstock and dry cows as he did at the rented farm sites, and works closely with

Most of Lisson’s land is irrigated. “When we made this purchase, irrigation was already here and that was a big selling point for us,” Lisson said. “Having access to water changes everything, especially in a year like this.” With a farm to call his own, a herd proving their worth and land for continued opportunity, Lisson is at peace with where his dairying career has taken him. “I’ve always wanted something of my own,” Lisson
said. “This farm was ready, so now I’ll continue to focus on production and hopefully grow the farm. I have to see how the industry shapes out and how I’ll t in to that.” Lisson is also eager to take this opportunity to raise his family as caretakers of the land and animals. “There are miracles in my life … after intense prayers, I know with certainty that I’m living out my vocation,” Lisson said. “My family is here on this farm to raise strong, Christian men and women.”

Get to know Hunter Thompson of Elkader, Iowa
Hunter Thompson Elkader, Iowa Parent: Jeri Kay Schiffman Employer: Whittle Farms Volga, Iowa Clayton County 560 cows 2021 graduate, Edgewood-Colesburg High School 18 years old Tell us your favorite experience of your employee helping with chores (answered by supervisor Shania Falck). That’s a hard one, since I’ve worked with him since he started. Every milking is an experience in itself. Once when the cows of pen ve got out and we had to run to get them, I lost a boot in the sand and Hunter laughed pretty hard. What qualities does your employee have that benet the farm? He’s hard working and very eager to learn. He brings laughter to the farm, and everyone needs a laugh. What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities are to run the milking parlor, including to keep up on sanitation, keep an accurate record of each pen during my shift, and start up and shut down of the milkhouse. On the side, other than what is required of me for my position, I volunteer for extra duties. These duties include dry lot cleanup, barn maintenance and eld work. When did you begin helping on the farm? My beginning on the farm is all thanks to my sister, Shinia. Her family got me into 4-H. That led me to start showing dairy cattle. After this, I was given the opportunity to apply at Whittle Farms through my sister, where I have now been employed for four years. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I devoted my entire time to Whittle Farms for the rst three years I was employed. I left

Thompson recently graduated from Edgewood-Colesburg High School. band class and choir class voluntarily to make time for homework. My mother always said if my grades slipped, I wouldn’t be able to work the large number of hours that I had been putting in, so of course, I worked extra hard to keep my grades up. In my fourth year, I came to be in a relationship with my lovely lady. Therefore, I chose to back off on my work load a little bit for some time to start the true path of my life.
What do you love most about farm life? For me, no matter the stress that follows is the fact that almost every day I aid in the production of a necessary product for the people of this nation.
How has working on the farm shaped your character? While I cannot easily answer that, I can say it provided me the honor of being the Iowa FFA Dairy Production Placement Prociency winner and a nalist for Iowa Star in Production Placement this spring.
What are your plans for the future? I plan to attend Northeast Iowa Technical College in Calmar, Iowa, for the John Deere Tech Program, which is a two-year associate degree. After college, I’ll be starting my next path with my lovely lady.
What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? Where there is a problem, there is always a solution.

What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be a crop farmer, truck driver or a diesel mechanic. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. If I had my own farm, I would have a huge shop, a huge shed, a huge bin site and a lot of acres. What is your favorite thing to do off and on the farm in the summer? My favorite things to do off the farm in the summer are going to the cabin and Farmfest. My favorite thing to do on the farm is to ride my four-wheeler. What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treat is an ice cream bar. What is the best thing about growing up on a farm? The best thing about growing up on the farm is there is a lot of space to play. If I had my own farm, I would have John Deere tractors, a dairy barn, a grain site, a main shop and a barn style house. What is your favorite thing to do off and on the farm in the summer? My favorite thing to do off the farm in the summer is going to the cabin with Grandma and Grandpa in Dent, Minnesota. My favorite thing to on the farm is to ride my four-wheeler. What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treat is vanilla ice cream cones. What is the best thing about growing up on a farm? The best thing about growing up on the farm is there is a lot of space to play. Jovi Zigan 8 years old When do you do chores? I do chores in the morning and night. In the morning, I do breakfast dishes, and at night, I help Mom feed calves. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? Why? My favorite chore is feeding calves with Mom and doing barn chores when Mom and I share earbuds to listen to music. My least favorite chore is feeding grain. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. My favorite animal on our farm is our German shepherd, Gemma. She is friendly, cute and loves going on adventures with us. What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be a vet like Dr. Pol. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. If I had my own farm, I would have a big calf barn, a big cow barn with robots, a heifer shed, a chicken coop, a kitty shed, a shop, a barn house and a swimming pool. What is your favorite thing to do off and on the farm in the summer? My favorite thing to do off the farm in the summer is going to Grandma’s cabin and going to the beach. My favorite thing to do on the farm in the summer is play outside and stay up late. What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treat is twist ice cream from Dairy Queen. What is the best thing about growing up on a farm? The best thing about growing up on the farm is there is plenty of space to play around and get exercise. Alec Zigan 5 years old When do you do chores? I follow Dad during chores in the morning and night. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? Why? My favorite chore is washing equipment and watching Dad scrape lots and bed pens. My least favorite job is calf pails and bedding heifers. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. My favorite animals on our farm are the beef cows. I like going on rides to check pastures with Dad. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a Bobcat xer when I grow up. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. If I had my own farm, I would have a big shop to x in with lots of tools and space to keep
my tractors and a robot barn and a heifer barn. What is your favorite thing to do off and on the farm in the summer? My favorite thing to do off the farm in the summer is going to the waterpark. At home on the farm, I like to clean lots and then pressure wash the skidloader when we are done. What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treats are chocolate milk and cheese sticks. What is the best thing about growing up on a farm? The best thing about growing up on the farm is we have lots of equipment.
