Keeping your cool Cooling milk and keeping it cool are essential tasks for all dairies. As dairy farmers know, quickly getting milk to the proper temperature for storage can mean the difference between shipment and spoilage, not to mention happy, healthy milk-drinking customers when all is said and done. Understandably then, the refrigeration system on most dairy farms constitutes a considerable energy cost. But it’s also a considBy Shaun Daniel erable opportunity for energy savings, The MN Project too. Wisconsin Focus on Energy suggests the following order of priority for improving the efÀciency of your refrigeration system: 1. Refrigeration Heat Recovery Units; 2. Scroll Compressors; 3. Plate/Pre-coolers; 4. Variable Speed Milk Pumps. We’ll consider each of these options brieÁy in this article. Refrigeration heat recovery units Ordinarily with a refrigeration unit, the heat generated in the process of running the refrigerator is discharged into the air via the condenser. As an alternative, refrigeration heat recovery (RHR) units work by capturing this heat and repurposing it to heat water. The payback on energy savings comes from the decrease in water heating costs, since heating water accounts for approximately 18 percent of a dairy’s energy costs. With an RHR, up to 50 percent of those costs can be reduced. An RHR unit is comprised of a water storage tank and a heat exchanger. Through the milk refrigeration process, the hot refrigerant gas exits the compressor and is piped through the heat exchanger, where its heat is transferred to a piped-in water supply. Whereas the refrigerant gas might enter as hot as 200ÝF, the RHR heat exchanger decreases that by 75–85ÝF, in turn heating the water from, say, 55°F to as high as 100°F. The warmed water is heated the rest of the way by a water heater to the producer’s desired temperature. In the above example, offered by Focus on Energy, the estimated water heating cost savings would be 43 percent. One note of caution: a refrigeration heat recovery unit can sometimes be a competing technology with a plate-cooler, especially with smaller herd sizes. Having an energy audit done can help to identify which equipment choices will make the most sense for your operation. Scroll compressors A compressor is a pump within the condensing unit driven by an electric motor that circulates and compresses the refrigerant. The most typical style of compressor is called a reciprocating compressor. It works basically the same way an automobile engine does, with pistons turned by a crankshaft and driven by a motor. In contrast, scroll compressors are comprised of two main parts: a Àxed scroll (or spiral) and an orbiting scroll attached to the crankshaft. Scroll compressors have fewer moving parts than reciprocating compressors and no intake or discharge valves. This results in a quieter, longer-lasting, and more reliable piece of equipment, reducing compressor energy costs by 15-25 percent. Interestingly, scroll compressors have been around since the early 1900s, but are only now being recognized for their
potential. Scroll compressors tend to come standard on most new refrigeration systems. But if you have a system that is more than 10 years old, you might consider upgrading. According to Scott Sanford, Senior Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, scroll compressors can be adapted to existing condenser units if they are sized to within Àve percent of the Btu/hr capacity of the current compressor. To be sure, it’s a good idea to consult with farm refrigeration experts, including University of Minnesota Extension agents or your dairy supply company. Plate coolers and variable speed milk pumps Plate coolers (also called pre-coolers) are another option for utilizing waste heat in a productive manner. In this instance, a pre-cooler is installed in the milk discharge line before the bulk tank. As the Áowing milk passes through the plate cooler it runs against a plate which separates the milk from cold well water Áowing in the opposite direction. As with an RHR unit, the heat from the milk transfers to the water, meaning cooler milk, a decrease in refrigeration energy needs, and pre-warmed water to be used in other applications. While the warmed water could be used for parlor washing, most producers simply use it as drinking water for their cattle, which prefer the warmer temperature. In fact, It’s been demonstrated that cows will drink more water if it’s warmed, potentially increasing milk production. A plate cooler can lower the milk’s temperature by 20°F to 40°F before it reaches the bulk tank, leading to a reduction in refrigeration energy requirements of as much as 60 percent. Because the Áow rates of the milk and water affect the amount of cooling a plate cooler can provide, you should take care to make sure any pre-coolers are sized and installed properly. A minimum 1:1 water-to-milk Áow ratio is recommended and a 2:1 ratio is suggested for maximum cooling. If Áow rates of water can’t be increased to meet the ideal ratio, one option is a variable speed milk pump, which can slow the Áow of the milk through the plate cooler. Remember that before you make any purchases, you’ll want to check with your local utility about the rebates they offer. Arranging these beforehand makes the process a lot easier and better guarantees the support they can provide. The exact amount of the rebate often will depend on the type of equipment, sizes and efÀciency ratings, but rebates for the equipment discussed above are common. Ask your utility what they offer. For more information on refrigeration heat recovery units, scroll compressors and plate coolers, as well as other energy efÀciency ideas for your dairy, please visit The Minnesota Project website at mnproject.org or give us a call at 651-789-3330. On our website you’ll Ànd a wealth of information in the Farm Energy EfÀciency Resource Center at http://mnproject.org/e-EE_ResourceCenter.html. The Minnesota Project champions programs for the sustainable production and equitable distribution of energy and food in communities across Minnesota. In response to economic difÀculties faced by Minnesota’s dairy farms, The Minnesota Project was awarded funding from the Otto Bremer Foundation to provide dairymen and electric cooperatives with the resources they need to make dairy operations more sustainable, cost effective and proÀtable.

Head of Outstanding Registered Holstein Cattle
70
NOTE: This is an outstanding offering of beautifully uddered, homebred, 100% registered Holstein cattle. The Dahlen family began dairying in 1973 with a small herd of registered Holsteins and have expanded their herd to the present sale day offering. This herd features many 80 point plus cows, with individuals to 88 points, with possible excellents in waiting. This herd has been on official test and exclusively artifi cially bred for over 35 years. Current offi cial DHIA records indicate a herd average of 2X 21,900 milk, 3.9% fat and 3.2% protein. Individuals producing to 129 lbs. per day with 9 over 100 lbs. and 6 in the mid 90’s. Current tank average 81 lbs. No BST. Several will be just fresh and in peak production. For many years the Dahlens have been in the top 100 (currently ranked 73rd), among the lowest SCC herds in Minnesota. Careful sire selection is evident throughout the herd with the Dahlens choosing elite sires and service sires, including, but not limited to: Sanchez, Atwood, Million. Braxton, Crown and Alexander Laurin, Blitz, RSVP, and the list goes on. Along with a great set of young cows, we offer an exceptional group of bred heifers sired and in service to leading sires. Excellent herd health program. This herd will provide something for everyone from milk to superior genetics. If you enjoy farm fresh herd additions from a proven program, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend the Timbr Creek-D complete milking herd and select bred heifer dispersal. Prior inspection welcome by appointment beginning Saturday, March 24th. Sale held under cover. Trucking available. For your catalog, phone today. (320) 352-3803 or midamericanauctioninc.com

Head of Outstanding 317 High Producing Holstein Cattle
NOTE: This is a very good herd of large frame, well uddered, high producing Holstein cattle. This herd has been on test since 1985 with current owner records indicating a herd average of 2X 22,988 milk, 3.6% 770 fat and 3.1% 702 protein, current tank average 78 pounds. No BST. Several quality milk awards over the past several years with the 2011 yearly SCC average 126,000. Last test SCC an amazing 106,000. Many cows and heifers recently fresh or due soon after sale time. All cows housed in a free stall facility and milked in a double 4 flat parlor allowing easy transition to any type facility. Artificial breeding to the breed’s leading sires along with selected herd sires from the famous Goebel Bros. Dairy used since the Wensmanns began dairying. AI sires and service sires include, but not limited to: Bomaz, Deuce, Graybil, Jock, Omar, Reuben, Lyle, Zillion, Rolex and Dex, among others. The Wensmanns have always chosen sires that transmit superior traits directed to feet, legs, udders and durability. A strenuous herd health program through the Cold Spring, MN vet clinic in place for many years. All cattle vaccinated and boosted seasonally. All dry cows dry treated and given the Scourboss vaccination at dry off. Cattle will be TB tested post sale for out-of-state buyers requiring such testing. Hooves trimmed regularly. Along with a fancy set of young cows, we offer an exceptional group of bred and open heifers that are sired by leading sires and out of top Wensmann dams. If you are in need of high quality dairy replacements in volume, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend the Wensmann complete dairy dispersal auction. Thank you! NOTE: While we often are able to provide all breeding and production information on the sale brochure, with this number of cattle that will not be possible. However we will provide a catalog upon request that will include all information. Please call (320) 352-3803 or www.midamericanauctioninc.com to obtain your catalog today.

NOTE: The Wensmann family, after nearly 30 years of successful operation of their dairy farm, have decided to retire and sell the following at auction. Mid-American Auction Co. is very pleased to be selected to conduct the Wensmann’s high quality dairy dispersal auction. Ron, Audrey and their family began dairying on this farm in 1983 and have done a great job in building an outstanding herd of high quality Holstein cattle that possess the important traits today’s dairy farmers demand. Please note the 10:00 a.m. start time, as with this number of cattle we must as always begin on time. We will begin with a few livestock related items, skid steer attachments, then right on to cattle. Prior inspection welcome by appointment beginning Tuesday, March 20th. In case of severe weather, please listen to KASM 1150 AM Albany or phone owner for further information. All cattle will sell under cover. Trucking available. Thank you!
