DAIWA FISHING TACKLE 2020
ACHIEVING A DREAM CAPTURE. Mr. Hiromu Sano with his PB Kingfish weighing 32kg. Caught during testing of the 20 Saltiga in Japan.
THE LEGACY STILL LIVES BUT IS NOW REBORN. 20 Saltiga can be defined as a fishing reel with unparalleled strength. The one phrase we have all said in our heads “one day I will be the one with the giant fish. Daiwa has built the 20 Saltiga to make your dream come true. User friendly and tough against the giants, Daiwa built 20 Saltiga to be the ultimate saltwater spinning reel which is superior in all aspects of strength and function.
THE STRONGEST ARMOUR. Tackle that you can trust. Tackle that gives you confidence. Our aim is to design a reel to suit the wants and needs of anglers. We want the angler to challenge themselves to “BREAK YOUR RECORD. Daiwa is certain that 20 Saltiga will enable anglers to achieve their angling dreams all across the world.
Reel The Saltiga series of reels has made many angler’s dreams come true. In 2020 Saltiga will return to the market with the introduction of a MQ body and brand-new cosmetics. The larger diameter radiation drag knob with heat sink system coupled with a newly designed drive gear brings strength and smoothness to the reel whilst the latest technology spool creates trouble free casts. By adding every element of newly developed Daiwa Technology, we are certain that the 20 Saltiga is the toughest reel produced throughout the long history of Saltiga.

THE KING OF OFFSHORE
BLUEFIN TUNA Ichiro Sato "With the 20 Saltiga, I am confident enough to say the reel can handle 300-400kg Bluefin Tuna." Fishing for Bluefin Tuna with a stickbait is known to be the hardest task within the field of fishing. 50kg, 100kg and 200kg, the sizes of these giant fish are unknown and still continues to grow. Mr Sato has inspired many anglers by breaking his own record. With 20 Saltiga, he is aiming to Break the Record of 300kg class fish. Since the day Daiwa came up with the concept of 20 Saltiga, Mr Sato has had enormous amount of input to this reel. “I don’t usually request much to the engineer, all I have asked for is to create the toughest reel that can go head to head against monstrous size fish and something the end user can trust and rely on.” So why are durability and strength the key elements to this reel? Bluefin Tuna as you know are fast swimmers with a ton of power. From the moment it strikes the lure, the reel will be tested by its speed, power and also the amount of force and impact that comes through the reel whilst fighting the fish. “no one wants to lose their dream catch, they want to be able to land that fish. The only machine we have to fight with is your fishing reel on its own, us as an angler needs to be able to focus on the fight and not to think “what if something happens to my reel?”. 20 Saltiga gives me no fears or stray thoughts and for that I can focus on the fight and also can fight with confidence” Long hours of battle with the fish puts everything under a lot of stress and to build a reel that can support you is a very hard task to complete. “Larger the fish gets the harder and longer the fight becomes. It will test your rod strength, the reel strength and also the line strength. 20 Saltiga has exceeded the strength level of the fishing reel moving it to the next level and it will become a big part of an angler’s journey to land 300-400kg Tuna.” 20 Saltiga will help you “BREAK YOUR RECORD”. 8

MQ BODY MQ Body will take the reel to the next level “By implementing MQ Body to the new 20 Saltiga, an angler can put their reel through a 30kg full drag setting and still not worry about the reel failing. MQ design is the main source of strength to this reel.” (Sato) Up until 20 Saltiga, reel bodies consisted of two key elements known as a body and body cover. The MQ System does not require a body cover, it allows an Engine plate to screw on direct to the body.

Therefore, the body no longer has a need for body cover screws, this development allows a larger diameter drive gear to be fitted providing the reel with more power.

By incorporating the newly developed Aluminum Air Rotor to 20 Saltiga, it has more than doubled rotor strength in comparison to 15 Saltiga. Having to fish with diving stickbaits in most cases, the large Bluefin Tuna fishing puts a reel through a lot of tension changes, especially to the line roller assembly as well as the rotor. The field tester believes that he feels confident to fish with 20 Saltiga and feels like the reel can go up against any conditions or situation.

All round comfort and confidence. The reel functions and serves it's purpose perfectly from the moment you attach it to the rod. Cast, wind, control and hook up. There is so much this workhorse has to do. “This reel has an absolutely perfect balance. The weight ratio of the reel is perfectly engineered, it also releases from the spool freely while composing nice flawless loops when casting thanks to the newly developed spool and redesigned lip section. The reel can cast long distances and also creates less line trouble for an angler. The reel has a perfect binding between the drive and the pinion gears, so smooth and so light to wind. The drag feels so smooth and strong, the clicker is so much louder and sings well. Just an allaround great reel.
The aluminum air rotor is more than double the strength compared to the 15 Saltiga. It is also believed to be 1.5 times more durable compared the original Saltiga (2002 Model).
SALTIGA CHRONICLE
Toughness and durability is the key to success
Saltiga Development Story Seikai Murakoshi & Development staff
“The concept to the 02 Saltiga (Original Saltiga) was tough, long lasting and unbreakable” Mr Seikai Murakoshi (Mr Murakoshi) When we first started designing 02 Saltiga, we had all agreed to build something tough that would last a very long time but most of all it has to be unbreakable even under high pressure. That’s how we started the development of SW type reels. Mr Wataru Tsutsumi. (Mr Tsutsumi) Back in the 2000s there was no such thing as a SW spinning reel, we had to work with a small spinning reel and identify the fragile components of the reel. (Mr Murakoshi) I remember cutting out the anti-reverse switch and auto bail return system. As an engineer, what were the things you had in your mind to turn this concept into an actual product? (Mr Tsutsumi) The main focus was to have the fundamentals down pat. Just about 2 years before the Saltiga project started, the original Digigear project kicked off and this has definitely helped along the way for the Saltiga project. The next task we had to face was “how to create a water-resistant system”, there was no such thing as water resistant systems within the history of the Daiwa reels. (Mr Murakoshi) It was the era of using the packing as a water-resistant system. Other than the basics of the reel and the water-resistant system, what else did you have to do? (Mr Tsutsumi) The other main thing was to come up with the durable drag washers. It was known to burn out after a fight with decent size fish. We had to look hard to find the right material and produce something tougher. (Mr Murakoshi) The original Saltiga idea was a breakthrough to the market, we aimed to not upgrade or to model change for 10 years but unfortunately, after the 9 years we decided to upgrade. Can you give me a rundown of how it got to that stage? (Mr Tsutsumi) The original Saltiga felt quite heavy and stiff to wind purely because of the packing for the water resistance system. We needed to improve that, and we needed to find another solution, the engineering team has always known that. After 10 years of development, we found the solution and that was the Magsealed system. (Mr Murakoshi) It was a bit of a shock when I first heard about upgrading but once I went out to field testing and found out how much difference it makes to have or not have the packing in the reel. From that moment, I knew we needed to make some changes. It was very eye opening to me.
12
Mr Murakoshi has always been a pioneer of the Saltiga Development project.
(Mr Tsutsumi) We decided to use Magsealed system around the main shaft to start with, then we successfully created a Magsealed bearing which lead us to further development for the next generation of Saltiga. (Mr Murakoshi) I still remember the first time I used 14 Saltiga Expedition with the Magsealed bearing built inside Line Roller assembly, it was so smooth. (Mr Tsutsumi) The Magsealed bearings were developed to suit every reel and not only for Saltiga, but R&D team realized having this in Saltiga is the key to the answers we have always been looking for. By adding the bearing in the Line Roller system where the water will intrude the most. Nothing like having to not worry about seized Line Roller assembly. (Mr Murakoshi) I guess the Saltiga project has two big parts to it. One is to listen to the field tester and to answer their demands, they know the field, they know where the reel needs to improve more. And the other thing is to have engineer come up with new ideas and their creations. When both of these are put together you can create something amazing. 02 Saltiga was all about the field tester and the anglers needs, Original SALTIGA Prototype 10 Saltiga was all about the engineer and their creations. Now 20 Saltiga is a mixture of both. (Mr Horie) I have always felt like the reel was still missing the durability, it needed a further improvement. (Mr Murakoshi) I agree and the expectation from the end user was very high and we needed to be able to answer that.
“15 Saltiga was a great success however there was a lack of durability” Mr Tsutsumi who helped design Saltiga and also created the name Saltiga. Based on Digigear the reel was created to stand against Salt water and to target anglers who specialize in Saltwater Game Fishing.
(Mr Horie) And that is the reason why we focused on improving durability of the body, the gearset and the rotor more than anything on the 20 Saltiga. We have decided to introduce MQ System to the new 20 Saltiga, this creates a tougher body and increased the rigidity of the assembly. We have also revised the paint on the body to come up with a High Corrosion Resistant Paint on the body. (Mr Murakoshi) How about the gearset? (Mr Horie) Our aim was to produce the drive gear which is a lot lighter but a lot stronger. The first step was to increase the diameter of the drive gear however, by increasing the size it also increased the weight. This is why we had to come up with a new material which will meet our requirements. By introducing G1 Duralumin, it allows us to increase the diameter and also the thickness of the drive gear but not to increase the weight, if anything we could reduce the weight. For the rotor, we have gone back to Aluminum Rotor. In the original model we used AL rotor, then for 10,14 and 15 we have used Zaion Rotor. A downside of the Zaion Rotor was its decreased the strength of the rotor. We wanted something tough, something that can stand against any fish and any fishing situation. For that, aluminum as a material has always had an upper hand on Zaion. Yes, the weight has increased a little but we minimized the increase by changing the shape. (Mr Murakoshi) I’m assuming you guys have managed to create mega upgraded version of the previous rotors in the history. (Mr Horie) Yes, we believe the 15 Saltiga is by far a quite tough reel but for us to be able to come up with something even tougher, that is a great achievement of ours and we are very proud of it. (Mr Murakoshi) I see, I do agree with you that 15 Saltiga is a great creation, and that’s why some people may find it rather difficult to think the same about 20 Saltiga but in 5 to 10 years I’m sure everyone will feel totally different about the reel and they will agree that the reel is by far the toughest reel on the market. 13
SALTIGA CHRONICLE
“To increase the durability we have upgraded Gearset, Rotor and introduced a Monocoque Body”
Mr. Ueno who was in charge of designing the LC-ABS Spool. He believes he has developed something great to go with Saltiga.
(Mr Ueno) As an engineer who re-designed the spool, I have taken onboard a lot of feedback from the anglers. It is very common for a lot of anglers to encounter the monster fish, but every angler felt that current model spools didn’t have enough line capacity on the spool. A great example is 5500 spools can only spool up to about 270m of PE6, that extra 30m to make 300m has always been a very high demand. (Mr Murakoshi) “Why should we throw away 30m of very expensive PE Line” is how every angler would have felt. (Mr Ueno) In saying that, just because you can spool a lot of line doesn’t always mean a good thing, it increases the chance of line trouble and effects the casting ability. This is why with the 20 Saltiga 14000 (equivalent to 5500), I have designed the spool to be able to take on 300m of PE6 with an ease. By introducing LC (Long Cast) ABS, it decreased the chance of line troubles but gained casting distance. (Mr Murakoshi) I don’t recall any line trouble while testing either. (Mr Ueno) As far as the drag system goes, we aimed to increase the strength and also the smooth run of the drag.
History of SALTIGA Mr Murakoshi was involved in 02 and 10 Saltiga. It has been 20 years since the original project started. The shape may change but the concept stays the same.
Saltiga Development Story Seikai Murakoshi & Development staff
(Mr Murakoshi) When you say, “Increase the strength”, Can you elaborate a little more? (Mr Ueno) We have managed to increase the strength against the very powerful run of the fish or the long fight against the fish. In comparison to 15 Saltiga Drag washer, it is more than 10 times stronger and less likely to burn out quick. We have added more drag washers, which means workload gets spread evenly across the drag stack. By designing the washers with a slightly smaller

diameter, it runs a lot smoother. Smaller means the per drag washer Max Drag Kg will decrease but we have solved that issues by adding more washers. (Mr Murakoshi) The smaller drag washer gives me an impression of “weaken”. (Mr Ueno) It’s actually a complete opposite, by shrinking the diameter, it runs smoother and it is less likely to feel sticky. (Mr Murakoshi) So, you are saying that this drag system will be able to go up against a variety of situations and still be as smooth?
(Mr Ueno) I can reassure you, in comparison to other model Saltigas, the drag will definitely feel less sticky and can be matched with any rod. (Mr Murakoshi) It is always nice to have a smooth drag even if we used a very stiff rod. It seems like 20 Saltiga has an ability to cater within different fields and became the all-around ultimate saltwater fishing reel. (Mr Ueno) The washer diameter has decreased but the knob itself has an increased diameter 1.5 times larger. By using aluminum drag knob, it will increase the volume of the heat releases from the drag stack and drag knob will work as heat sink system. (Mr Murakoshi) I’m guessing by increasing the heat dissipation, it will balance out the smoothness of the drag system and makes it stable while fishing? (Mr Horie) Yes, the larger diameter drag knob will also come in handy to control the amount of drag pressure while fishing. It is designed and shaped for an angler to be able to grip on nicely while fighting the fish too.
“The Saltiga brand is evolving and is creating a new legacy” (Mr Murakoshi) It’s very important to have a well-designed drag knob, it is definitely a plus for any angler. It gets harder and harder to control the drag system while fishing up against a larger fish, nice to know that drag will still be smooth when cranked right up. (Mr Horie) We have increased the drag kg and still have a smooth drag. With the 20 Saltiga, we can have it cranked right up to 20kg, yet the line still comes out nice and smooth. (Mr Murakoshi) Is it all across different size 20 Saltiga? (Mr Horie) Yes, from a constructive point I believe I can say yes to that question. For an example, 14000 size reels will still run smooth with 25kg of drag pressure.
Mr Murakoshi will always have a special place for Saltiga even though he has been involved in many projects.
(Mr Murakoshi) That’s definitely a massive increase in drag kg. (Mr Horie) I tried my best to answer to the request and feedback from the anglers. (Mr Ueno) I was the one to engineer spool etc. but the hardest part of development was definitely the drag washer. Because of the line capacity, we couldn’t make the drag washer diameter any bigger. With all sorts of restrictions, we had to manage to create smaller diameter drag washers yet not to lose power. To top it up we needed to prove the fact “it will not lose power” to Daiwa.
(Mr Murakoshi) You had to override the general rule of “Small = Weak” and “Lighter = Fragile” to come up with everything within 20 Saltiga. (Mr Horie) The one thing that shocked most was how the main shaft bent while testing, it was definitely something I didn’t expect to see. Usually the shaft of the drive gear will be bent due to the strong force but this time it was the other way around and bent the main shaft. I worked really hard to create the tougher main shaft. (Mr Murakoshi) As an R&D and as an engineer, what would the key points the anglers should look out for in 20 Saltiga? (Mr Ueno) I have always wanted to create something strong and within the field of fishing. I was honored to be a part of R&D team for the 20 Saltiga, I have listened to the anglers, I have taken onboard an opinion of others and now I feel that I’ve created something to be proud of. All I wish for now is to have the reel in the hand of many anglers. (Mr Tsutsumi) To reveal a bit of a secret, I am the one whom created the name ‘Saltiga’. I am humble and honored to see the name Saltiga has become the name and basically the face of the company. Unfortunately, I no longer am involved in development of Saltiga but it is great to see the legacy still lives and is loved by many. (Mr Horie) The reel has become something that can be loved by many and touches everyone’s heart. I hope the reel will support everyone and help “Break Your Record”. (Mr Murakoshi) Since the day the Saltiga project started up until now, the aim and the ultimate goal has not changed. It gave me great satisfaction knowing everyone is still and will always be working towards the same goal and working together. By changing the models and specs, the name Saltiga will always come back to the market as a better product. Who knows, 20 Saltiga will one day be the ladder for the next step.
Product testing was conducted countless times between the engineer and the field tester to create somthing great.

m is to create perfect water resistance, SW continue to battle with saltwater intrusion. From the first Saltiga, a water resistance system has been a must-have technology. Starting off with rubber packing, evolving to the way of Magsealed system then the addition of Magsealed bearings. Now to the MQ Body system, 20 Saltiga has finally obtained a perfect water resistance system.
MAGSEALED
Magseal system creates continous smoothness of winding and stops water and salt ingress to the reel.
The water resistance system which brought the biggest shock to the fishing tackle industry. A magnetic fluid is utilized (used in spacesuits) to create a magnetic shield within the reel. Adding the fluid between the body and the rotor creates consistent smoothness to the reel when winding. The system will shut out the saltwater intrusion, it also reduces the winding noise found in the pre magsealed models.

LC-ABS Creates long casts with less trouble
Mr Hiromu Sano is an angler who is well known within the industry for his variety of fishing styles and target species. Out of all the fishing he has done, he is specifically known to target large yellowfin tuna and yellowtail kingfish. He is known to travel all the way to Kyusyu and Okinawa Region for his yellowfin, he has taken multiple domestic trips to Genkai Nada and Goto Island, also travelled all the way across to New Zealnd for XL size Kingfish. He has chosen 20 Saltiga as his weapon of choice to battle against the so-called the giants. To Mr Sano whom travels all across Japan and the world, it is very important to have tackle he can trust, especially the reel. “I need to be able to trust my reel; every cast could lead me to the personal best fish. The last thing I need is to be dealing with any issues with tackle while I’m on the trip. I need my fishing tackle to promise me that they will be there to support me land the giants. 20 Saltiga is exactly what I wished for.”
18
Mr Sano has a unique fishing style for Yellowfin Tuna. It is common for an angler to be casting at a bust ups and schools of bait, but he prefers to cast a long distance within the area where the fish could be cruising and entice them to bite. An angler who holds records are usually great at their casting and they can cast a distance no others can. “Casting Game requires long-distance casting. Especially in the Sagami Bay, an angler requires the extra distance and it will definitely be an advantage for you to be able to cover the ground no others can. 20 Saltiga supports you to reach the distance you could never reach. The newly designed spool creates a very smooth flow of the line release and reduces the chance of wind knot also.” Even when you target yellowtail kingfish, it far more effective when you can gain distance with your cast. If cast distance is the key to create the opportunity for hook ups, the drag system on the reel is the key to landing the fish. “Fighting Yellowfin is like a marathon, you don’t try and stop them from running, let them go until they are done. The initial run is high speed and energetic, this is why smooth drag system plays a big part in this game. “ The bigger the tuna is the distance and speed of the run increases. In that moment, the drag system will heat up very fast which leads to burnt out washers and will create that sticky feeling to the drag.
New Design LC-ABS Spool LC-ABS Spool will allow you to approach the distance you couldn’t before. Casting game is all about the distance. Having to gain that extra distance will create more opportunity for you to encounter the larger fish. We have all had that moment “ if only we could gain extra 1 metre with my cast, if only the lure had gone an extra 50cm futher” It may seem like a small distance but it is a key factor in the casting game. with the new LC ABS SPOOL , the angler will be able to gain that extra distance in comparison to 15 Saltiga.
The LC-ABS design makes it less likely to encounter line trouble, always on point.
Cast Ability Smooth Cast Feel.
By introducing LC-ABS Spool, it creates less chances for the anglers to encounter the line troubles. Casting Accuracy and casting distance are the key factors in the casting game. “ Without having LC ABS Spool, I don’t believe I could land my personal best Kingfish of 32kg, purely because I couldn’t be able to cast the distance without the new spool”. (SANO)

Towards the end of the fight when fish gets tired, an angler would like to crank up the drag and gain as much line as possible to put an end to the fight, but what if the drag system fails and tuna decided to go for their last run, you may as well give up and say bye to your “catch”. “You know Tuna fishing is definitely going to be a long fight, you need a reliable drag system. Runs smooth when the fish goes for a run and it’s got to be powerful and smooth at the same time when I crank it up to put an end to the fight. On the other hand, fighting Kingfish just requires a decent amount of smooth drag so I can make sure there is enough tension to the line and the hooks won’t come off. 20 Saltiga can definitely accommodate both target species of mine. Just by adjusting the drag setting it can cater to any fishing, that’s the 20 Saltiga.”
Re-designed drag stack with a new heat dissipation system. In comparison to 6 drag washers in 15 Saltiga, 20 Saltiga has 14 drag washers. By adding the newly designed radiation drag knob, it will function as heat sink system to release more than 10 times the heat in comparison to the resin drag knob fitted on previous model Saltiga. The new drag system installed in 20 Saltiga can accommodate both situations and makes your fight against the fish a lot smoother and easier.

In 2001, we introduced the project of Saltiga to the market. The first release of the original Saltiga has definitely left a massive impact within the fishing reel category. Until the release of the Saltiga, there were no large reels which could be used for SW casting or jigging game within Japan. The original Saltiga was made to be tough and unbreakable. The first reel within the market which had a water resistance system installed and it became centre of attention and topic of conversation in no time. It’s been 19 years since launch and project Saltiga has never stopped. “Magsealed System” and “Magsealed Bearing”, introduced something unique to Daiwa and improved the performance of the reel. The word has been said again and again but smoothness of the reel, durablility and reliability has always been the aim of the development team. For an angler to “Break Your Record”, 20 Saltiga was designed and developed for you to challenge yourself. 20 Saltiga consists of 5 different sizes with 9 different models for you to achieve and break your own record.
