Zwaar was de voornamelijk stoffige 36ste editie van Le Dakar, die afgelopen januari alweer voor de zevende keer LatijnsAmerika werd gereden. De motoren, quads, auto’s en vrachtwagens vertrokken vanuit de Argentijnse hoofdstad Buenos Aires. Na vier wedstrijdetappes op de zinderend hete Argentijnse vlaktes, maakten ze de overtocht via het Andesgebergte naar Chili. Daar deed het hele peloton onder andere de droogste plek ter aarde aan: de Atacama woestijn. Daarna ging de tocht via een korte uitstap naar Bolivia terug door de Andes om uiteindelijk weer in Buenos Aires te finishen. Gemakkelijk gezegd, maar de pers moest deze rally nog wel even vastleggen.

Uit ervaring weet Léon Jansen, teamcaptain van het Dakar Press Team dat dit geen eenvoudige opgave is. Zijn eerste Dakar Rally deed hij in 2004. Destijds finishte Le Dakar nog echt in de Senegalese hoofdstad Dakar. ‘Sinds het vertrek uit Afrika is er veel veranderd’, aldus Jansen. ‘Het tempo ligt vele malen hoger en de ondergrond van de etappes bestaat voornamelijk uit gravel, rotsen en keien, zodat het materiaal het enorm te verduren krijgt. Bovendien ligt de temperatuur hoog, zeker in Argentinië, waar uitschieters naar 50 graden Celsius mogelijk zijn. Voor ons een extra reden om onze off road voertuigen tot in de puntjes te prepareren.’

‘Nadat ik met Leo Verkerk van TSL Leerdam over onze technische voorbereidingen sprak, had ik direct zijn aandacht. Verkerk gaat helemaal op in techniek en opperde al snel een aantal bijzonder slimme aanpassingen aan onze Amarok. Zodoende hebben we een Solar Panel op het deksel van onze pick-up gemonteerd, die vervolgens de SuperB Lithium Battery zou moeten voorzien van stroom. Technisch specialist Marko van TSL Leerdam bouwde vervolgens in het interieur van de Amarok een frame op maat, waarop een Waeco koelkast paste. Een serieuze klus, want tijdens de zware ritten off road wil je natuurlijk niet dat zo’n apparaat het vervolgens begeeft.’

‘Het Solar systeem en de koelkast hebben de zware tocht goed doorstaan. TSL Leerdam heeft het systeem bijzonder degelijk gemonteerd, want na negenduizend woeste kilometers zit alles nog net zo vast als voor de Dakar Rally. En de koeling wordt nog altijd gevoed door zonneenergie, net als alle accessoires. The 36th edition of Le Dakar was extremely tough and very dusty. The event took place in South America last January for the seventh time. The motorbikes, quads, cars and trucks started in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. After the first four special stages on the hot Argentinian plains, the Andes was crossed to Chile. In Chile the Rally continued in the driest place on earth: the Atacama Desert. After a short visit to Bolivia the Andes was crossed again and the rally ended in Buenos Aires. Sounds easy enough, however the rally, that for a large part takes place in very harsh terrain, also needs to be covered by the press. Léon Jansen knows out of experience that this is not an easy assignment. He completed his first Dakar in 2004. In those days Le Dakar still finished in the capital of Senegal: Dakar. ‘After leaving Africa a lot has changed”; according to Jansen. “The speeds are much higher, the tracks generally consist of gravel, stones and rocks. The equipment takes a tremendous beating. Especially in Argentina the temperatures are much higher, temperatures of over 50 degrees Celsius are easily reached. We must pay full attention when preparing our off-road vehicles for this challenging task.” “When I spoke with Leo Verkerk of TSL Leerdam about our preparation, I immediately got his attention. Technique is close to Leo’s heart. He soon proposed a few ideas to improve our Volkswagen Amarok. A solar panel was installed onto the lid of our pickup. The panels charge a SuperB Lithium Battery. Technical specialist Marco of TSL Leerdam built a custom made frame for a Waeco cooler that fits the interior of the Amarok. Maximaal bandenaflaten met Hutchinson velgen De VW Amarok Dakar Proto van het Dakar Press Team is na twee Dakar Rally’s al op veel punten serieus geprepareerd. Toch is er altijd ruimte voor verbetering. Tijd om de standaard 18” VW-velgen te verwisselen voor het echte werk: de 16” Multi-piece Hutchinson aluminium velgen, voorzien van Beadlock systeem. Heeft de standaard aluminium Volkswagen velg een maximaal draagvermogen per velg van 930 kilogram, de Hutchinson velg kan een belasting per wiel aan van maar liefst 1.500 kilogram. Daarmee verminder je dus de kans op schade of krom rijden. Bovendien is de bijzonder stoer vormgegeven velg voorzien van een Beadlock, waardoor een band (in ons geval een BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A 265/75R16) tot 0,5 bar kan worden afgelaten. Het Beadlock systeem fixeert de band met de velg. Ondanks een uiterst lage bandenspanning heb je dus gegarandeerd altijd grip. Bovendien kan de band nooit van de velg aflopen. Wel zo fijn als je van een schuine fesh-fesh duin naar beneden rijdt!

Ook op de Toyota Landcruiser 105 hebben we Hutchinson Beadlock velgen gezet. Deflate your tires to the minimum with Hutchinson rims After two Dakar rally’s the preparation of the VW Amarok Dakar Proto of the Dakar Press Team has been refined, however there is always room for improvement. It was time to change the 18” VW rims for something more serious: the 16” Multi-Piece Hutchinson aluminum rims, with Beadlock system. The standard Volkswagen rims have a maximum capacity of 930 kilograms per wheel, the Hutchinson rim can handle up to 1500 kilograms. The additional capacity considerably decreases the risk of damaging or bending a wheel. The robust looking rim is equipped with a beadlock system. This makes it possible to reduce the tire presure (in our case a BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A 265/75R16) to 0,5 bar. The beadlock system fixes the tire on the rim and despite the low tire pressure grip is guaranteed. An additional advantage is that the tire cannot run of the rim. A huge advantage when descending a steep fesh-fesh dune! The Toyota Landcruiser has also been equipped with Hutchinson rims. 11

In de dagen voor de start is Buenos Aires het hart van Le Dakar. Samen met de deelnemers, viert de stad voor de vierde maal de start van de zwaarste rally van het jaar. In Parc Tecnopolis wordt het bivak opgebouwd en zijn de technische keuringen. Maar liefst 414 voertuigen moeten gekeurd worden: 164 motoren, 48 quads, 138 auto’s en 64 vrachtwagens (exclusief service voertuigen en persauto’s). Een enorme logistieke operatie. Tijdens deze dagen treffen de teams de laatste voorbereidingen en bereiden de coureurs zich mentaal voor.

Ebert Dollevoet staat met zijn Volvo V8 Buggy klaar voor de start. Ebert reed twaalf jaar geleden voor het eerst mee op de motor; nu start hij voor de derde keer met een auto. Net als vorig jaar met Marcel Schnijders als navigator. Bij de technische keuring staat ook de DAF T4 van het Hamer Dakar-team. Met in de truck Fons Jans, Bob ten Harkel en Hans Heerema. Fons Jans heeft zijn bevlieging voor de Dakar Rally van niemand minder dan Jan de Rooy. ‘Deze man heeft Dakar echt gereden’, zegt hij met ontzag. Buenos Aires is the heart of Le Dakar during the days prior to the start. The city and the contestants celebrate the rally starting in the Argentinian capital for the fourth time. The bivouac and the technical scrutineering are hosted in the Parc Tecnopolis. No less than 414 vehicles need to be checked. 164 motorbikes, 48 quads, 138 cars and 64 trucks (excluding support and press vehicles). A huge logistical operation. The teams use the time to do the last preparations and the drivers prepare mentally. Ebert Dollevoet and his Volvo V8 Buggy are ready to start. Ebert who competed in the Dakar for the first time twelve years ago on a motorbike, is starting in a car for the third time. Marcel Schnijders is his navigator again. The Hamer team DAF T4 is also present at the scrutineering. The truck is driven by Fons Jans, Bob ten Harkel and Hans Heerema. Fons Jans’s enthusiasm for the Dakar comes from his icon; the one and only Jan de Rooy. “He competed in the real Dakar”: Fons says in full admiration. 12

The spectators are still as enthusiastic as they were during the first acquaintance with the Dakar in 2009. At the foot of the Obelisk, Avenue 9 de Julio is full of people cheering as the competitors drive the full length of the Avenue before taking their place on the podium.

De adrenaline stijgt en het enthousiasme is overweldigend, Maurik van den Heuvel en Vick Versteijnen zwepen het publiek op door petjes de menigte in te gooien. Robby Gordon maakt het spektakel compleet door op de gebruikelijke wijze het podium te gebruiken om zijn Dakarmonster te lanceren. Maar er is ook tegenslag: de equipe Eterovic krijgt midden op het podium te maken met zijn eerste pech. Door een losgekomen dieselleiding wil de auto niet meer starten. Naast het podium wordt het euvel snel verholpen. Beter nu dan tijdens de race.

The participants enjoy this moment as much as the public. This is the last moment they meet before the real work starts. As the adrenaline flows faster and enthusiasm is overpowering, Maurik van den Heuvel and Vick Versteynen throw caps into the crowd increasing the excitement. Robby Gordon completes the show when he launches his Dakar monster in spectacular style over the podium. There are also setbacks, the Eterovic team experience their first problem on the middle of the podium. The car will not start because of a loose fuel line but the problem is soon solved next to the podium. Better it happens now than during the race.

De deelnemers starten op volgorde van hun racenummers. Dat gebeurt alleen op deze eerste dag; de rest van de rally start iedereen op volgorde van de classificatie van de vorige dag.

This year, 414 competition vehicles will be present at start of the 36th edition of Le Dakar. Bikes, quads, cars and trucks will leave Parc Tecnopólis in Buenos Aires for the first stage of the rally. On this first day of the rally they start in race-number order. During the rest of the rally the starting order will depend on the position they finished the day before.

De deelnemers beginnen met een liaison van 144 kilometer. Dat is de verbindingsroute naar de eerste special stage: het wedstrijdgedeelte van deze dag. Om 05.15 uur vertrekt de eerste motorrijder al uit Buenos Aires om zich ruim tweeënhalf uur later te melden bij de start van de special stage. Officieel is de Dakar Rally nu pas echt begonnen. In tegenstelling tot voorgaande jaren zijn de laatste dagen niet enorm heet geweest. Een voordeel voor de deelnemers, maar zoals ze Stage Liaison Total weten kan dit ook snel weer veranderen.

The contestants will start with a 144 kilometers long liaison to the beginning of the first special stage. The first motorcyclist will depart from Buenos Aires at 05:15 to arrive at the start of the special stage two and a half hours later. The Rally has officially started. It is not as hot as in previous years, a great advantage for the competitors, but they know this can soon change.

Het parcours kent venijnig scherpe bochten, zodat de rijders Stage geen Liaison Totalhun aandacht kunnen laten seconde verslappen. Het is moeilijk om nu al een 784km 0km 808km strategie te bepalen. Deze eerste dag is niet 784kmheel 0km 808km heftig, maar de rijders moeten toch 273kmsoms0km vol aan273km de bak.

The first 175 (for the bikes and trucks) or 170 (for cars) kilometers take place on relatively flat gravel tracks in a scenery that reminds us of Europe. The route invites competitors to drive fast, however the many sharp bends demand full concentration. . It is hard to determine the right strategy. This first day is not too tough, but that does not mean that the drivers can relax.

Voor de motorrijders is deze eerste dag de dag om te wennen. Robert van Pelt rijdt op een voor hem nieuwe motor van Yamaha. Die is veel sneller dan zijn motor van vorig jaar. Robert is dan ook blij met zijn 46ste plaats. Frans Verhoeven was met een 19de tijd niet ontevreden, maar ook hij was aan het zoeken naar de uitersten van zijn motor. Zeker bij het rijden van de topsnelheid van rond de 165 kilometer per uur off road is dat belangrijk. Voor de nummers één en twee van deze etappe is dat anders. Zij hebben meer kunnen trainen en pakken de topplaatsen zonder enige twijfel. Rallyrijder Henno van Bergeijk die in het dagelijkse leven voertuigen verhuurt voor film en tv, heeft 2015 aangegrepen om zijn ongelukkige val van vorig jaar te overschrijven. Hij liep toen tijdens een val een zeer ernstige schouderblessure op en heeft lang nodig gehad om te herstellen. Wat brengt het avontuur hem dit jaar? In het quadklassement gaat het er heel anders aan toe. De quadrijders hebben een hele andere techniek van rijden, maar die is zeker niet minder spectaculair dan de techniek van andere categorieën. Het overgrote deel van de rijders kent dit landschap goed. Van de 45 quadrijders komen er 31 uit Zuid-Amerika. Als de strijd van de eerste etappe is geleverd en de kaarten zijn geschud, zijn er direct al verliezers. Most motorcyclists use this first day to settle in. Robert van Pelt is riding a new Yamaha, a much faster bike than the one he had last year and is pleased to finish in 46th position. Frans Verhoeven was content with his 19th place, trying to get to grips with his bike. This is very important when driving off-road at speeds around 165km per hour. The winners of the stage have had the possibility to practice, they take the high raking positions with ease.. Rally driver Henno van Bergeijk’s daily business is renting out cars for film and television productions. He does not want to repeat last year’s bad fortune in 2015. He badly injured his shoulder during a nasty fall and it took him a long time to recover. What can he expect in this year’s adventure? Things are totally different in the quad class, they use a totally different technique, but it is equally spectacular. Most of the riders know the area well, 31 of the 45 quad riders are from South America. The stakes are set after the first stage, and there are already some losers. Richard de Groot encounters electrical problems with his bike. He decides to not to take the risk on the narrow race tracks and choses a safer route, but this means he misses a number of waypoints. The organization disqualifies him, despite the fact that he put priority on safety. He is not the only one that runs into trouble. The drivers suffer fatigue as the temperature rises on the long route to the bivouac. “It was as if the heat was radiating from the ground”, explains Frans Verhoeven.

Overgeleverd aan de grillen van Nikolaev rijdt Gerard vele tientallen kilometers in zijn stof en noteert uiteindelijk een negende tijd. Maar alles ligt nog open en het veld zit dicht bij elkaar. Wuf van Ginkel rijdt een mooie achtste plaats en blijft precies één seconde voor op favoriet Gerard de Rooy.

Hans Stacey heeft de beste strategie vandaag en slaat toe door de eerste dagzege in het truckklassement te pakken. The rally-like Argentinian roads provide many surprises in the truck category. Star driver Gerard de Rooy suffers in the dust of his rival Nikolaev. Gerard is faster but the narrow tracks allow no opportunity to overtake. Gerard can do no more than follow in Nikolaev’s dust and finally finishes in ninth position, illustrating the differences are very small. Wuf van Ginkel finishes in a very acceptable eighth position, exactly one second in front of Gerard de Rooy. The best strategy of the day is for Hans Stacey, with the first stage victory in the truck class going to him.

The Hamer Dakar team is less fortunate and has to retire on the first day. 70km from the stage finish they drive into a ditch and loose both axles. The Dakar is tough and unpredictable.

The first 838km have been completed and the drivers enter the bivouac for the first time. A beautiful bivouac located on the shores of a lake at Villa Carlos Paz, this is the first time the rally has been hosted here.

Tot rust komen is er tijdens de meeste etappes niet bij. En vandaag zeker niet. Voordat de coureurs San Juan bereiken, hebben ze enorm Total hard moeten werken. Zelfs de meest 523km ervaren rijders zullen op hun tandvlees rijden als ze de finish bereiken. Heel 520km simpel, omdat dit de langste special 520km stage is van deze Dakar Rally. En omdat de route veel verschillende rijdersdisciplines vereist. Het begin van de etappe gaat over hard terrein. Dat gaat langzaam over in stoffige Total secties, aan het einde gevolgd door grote zanderige vlaktes. Dit is de 1024km eerste echte test die waarvoor de 1024km rijders alleen slagen als ze continu 1024km alert zijn en adequaat reageren. Bij de auto’s pakt Nasser Al Attiyah de zege van de tweede etappe. Voor hem is deze zege heel belangrijk: ‘Dit was het Total plan voor vandaag, vanaf nu gaan we gestaag richting de rustdag.’ Nasser 393km is vastbesloten om de overwinning van 393km deze Dakar Rally op te eisen. Ook Joan Barreda Bort pakt de dagzege. Met 393km een flinke overmacht zet hij hiermee zijn stempel op deze editie. Maar dat ging niet vanzelf; de vele special tracks en de grote hobbels in het parcours hebben het de motorrijder flink moeilijk gemaakt. En niet alleen voor hem was het zwaar. Sam Sunderland, een gedegen concurrent, raakt totaal verdwaald op ruim 70 kilometer voor de finish, waardoor zijn kansen nu al afgenomen zijn.

There is not a lot of time to rest during the stages and today is no exception. Before the drivers reach San-Juan they will have to work hard. Even the most experienced drivers will take a beating before reaching the finish. This is the longest stage in this year’s Dakar rally, the route requiring a range of different disciplines. The stage will start with hard tracks that slowly change to dusty sections, the last part being large, open, sandy planes. This will be the first real test and to be successful, the drivers will have to be extremely alert. In the car category, Nasser Al Attiyah takes victory in this second stage. An important victory. He explains: “This was the plan for today, from now on we will follow a steady course to the restday”. Nassar is focused on winning this Dakar rally. Joan Barreda Bort also takes the daily victory. He sets a strong pace and makes a clear statement. But it was not an easy win, the many special tracks and big potholes made it very tough. He was not the only one that suffered; Sam Sunderland, one of his main rivals, lost his way 70 kilometers before the finish, limiting any chances early in the race.

# 2 Joan Barreda Bort (ESP) - Stage victory

De hitte kent geen genade, ook niet voor de jonge coureurs. Veel rijders hebben deze etappe last gehad van de hitte en die werd Robert van Pelt zelfs bijna fataal. De 21-jarige coureur, die zich de jongste finisher van de Dakar Rally mag noemen, stond urenlang in de brandende zon, nadat zijn motor was afgeslagen en hij die door uitputting niet meer aan de praat kreeg. Robert is uiteindelijk met ernstige uitdrogingsen oververhittingsverschijnselen naar een veldhospitaal gebracht. Daar aangekomen ziet hij een groot aantal oververhitte motorrijders in het noodhospitaal dat de organisatie inderhaast heeft opgezet. ‘Het was doodeng. Ik was echt bang dat ik het niet zou redden’, vertelt hij. The heat is relentless, even the youngest of drivers suffer. Many of the competitors are affected by the heat and for Robert van Pelt it was nearly fatal. The 21 year old motorcyclist, who possesses the title as the youngest person to finish the Dakar, was exposed to the sun for hours after his bike stalled and he was so exhausted that he could not start again. In the end Robert was taken to the field hospital with serious overheating and dehydration. He arrived in a quickly established emergency hospital, only to find a large number of overheated colleagues. “It was really very frightening, I was very worried if I would make it,” he says.

Ook voor Orlando Terranova is te merken dat de Dakar Rally de zwaarste rally op aarde is. De koeling van zijn auto kan de hoge temperaturen niet aan, waardoor hij rustiger moet gaan rijden. Plotseling gaat het fout en slaat zijn auto vier keer over de kop. Wat er precies gebeurd is, weet hij niet. Maar was het wel zijn motor die oververhit raakte of was hij het zelf misschien? Heel anders vergaat het Bernhard ten Brinke. Hij finisht als derde en voelt zich ondanks de grote hitte in de auto nog heel erg fit. Hij is enorm tevreden over zijn Overdrive Toyota. Orlando Terranova also realizes that the Dakar is the toughest rally on earth. The cooling system in his car cannot cope with the high temperatures and he has to slow the pace. He is then surprised, the car flips over and rolls four times. He is not sure what happened, did he or the engine overheat? Bernard ten Brinke is more successful, he finishes in third place. Despite the high temperatures he feels very fit and is very content with his Overdrive Toyota.

De route gaat door een van de mooiste gebieden van ArgentiniĂŤ. Vanaf de rode gravelwegen heb je een geweldig uitzicht op de prachtige bergtoppen en immens diepe ravijnen. Tijdens deze kortere etappe kunnen de rijders genieten van de prachtige landschappen van de Pre-Andes. De vraag is of ze zich daardoor niet te veel zullen laten afleiden. De duizenden stenen maken de track verraderlijk; vooral voor de motorrijders is het oppassen geblazen. De hitte en de gevaarlijke wegen kunnen een prachtige dag een dramatisch einde bezorgen.

For many competitors, yesterdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stage lasted until the early hours of the morning. The relatively easy stage of today will be a well welcomed change. The stage will take the drivers through one of the nicest areas of Argentina. The red gravel tracks will provide fantastic views of beautiful peaks and deep ravines. The drivers will enjoy the picturesque scenery of the pre-Andes during this relative short stage, but they should not become too distracted. The thousands of stones make the track treacherous, so the bikers in particular will need to show concentration. The heat and dangerous roads can soon end what could be a beautiful day.

Na een zesde plaats in de etappe van gisteren is het Mathius Walkner die vandaag de snelste route kiest en daarmee zijn eerste etappezege op zijn naam weet te schrijven. Bij CP2 was de AustraliĂŤr nog vergezeld van de leiders in de rally. Daarna gaf hij gas bij en liet de specialisten achter zich om als eerste in Chilecito over de streep te komen. Marc Coma rijdt vandaag weer sterk. Nadat hij gisteren ruim tien minuten verloren had, eindigt hij vandaag maar veertig seconden achter Walkner.

After finishing in sixth position yesterday, Matheus Walker choose the fastest route today and won his first Dakar stage ever. The Australian was still accompanied by the rally leaders at CP1. Then, he opened up the throttle and left the specialists behind, to take the victory in Chilecito. Marc Coma has a good day,;after losing 10 minutes yesterday, he now finishes a mere 40 seconds behind Walkner. The Dutch riders do well, all arriving in time. Humphey Senn van Basel arrives as the last Dutch rider, just 2,5 hours behind the stage winner.

Tijdens deze derde etappe komt de Poolse motorrijder Michal Hernik op 39-jarige leeftijd te overlijden. De in Krakow geboren Hernik debuteerde dit jaar in de Dakar. De KTM-rijder begon als nummer 84 van het klassement aan deze etappe. Hij is op nog geen 300 meter van de doorgaande weg zonder helm gevonden. Uitdroging als gevolg van de extreme hitte werd hem fataal.

During this third stage of the Dakar Rally the Polish rider Michal Hernik passes away at 39 years young. It was the first Dakar for Hernik who was born in Krakow. The unfortunate KTMrider started this, fatal stage in 84th position. He was found no less than 300m from the main road not wearing his helmet. Dehydration caused by the extreme heat caused his death.

De Peugeotrijders beginnen langzaam hun draai in de rally te vinden. Sainz stuurt zijn auto naar een vierde plaats in deze etappe, vier minuten achter winnaar Orlando Terranova. De Argentijn, die tijdens de tweede etappe nog crashte, benutte zijn kennis van de omgeving en zette vooral in het tweede gedeelte van de etappe Giniel de Villiers en Nasser Al-Attiyah op achterstand. Deze etappe bezorgt Bernard ten Brinke een flinke tegenvaller. Hij schat een bocht verkeerd in en rolt de Toyota. Met een verlies van 30 minuten gaat Ten Brinke van de derde naar de achtste plaats in het algemeen klassement. Hij maakt zich nog geen zorgen; de rally is nog lang en er komen nog genoeg kansen. Af en toe een slechte dag hoort erbij. Tom Coronel verschijnt zonder zijn tweelingbroer aan de start. Broer Tim heeft gisteren de strijd moeten staken. Datzelfde geldt ook voor Ebert Dollevoet. Ook hij kan zich deze tweede etappe niet classificeren in zijn Volvo V8 Buggy. Bij de autoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s draaien de twee Nederlanders Erik van Loon en Bernhard ten Brinke enorm goed mee. Maar dat gaat niet vanzelf. Bernhard ten Brinke merkt al na 150 kilometer na de start dat de achterremmen blijven hangen. Doorrijden maakt het alleen maar erger; er zit niets anders op dan de remmen los te koppelen en verder te gaan. Het verlies is beperkt gebleven tot twee plaatsen in het algemeen klassement. Met vier lekke banden en een warmgelopen differentieel doorstaat Erik van Loon de eerste dagen richting de rustdag redelijk probleemloos. Cyril Depres loopt bijna een flinke schade op als hij de Polaris, die plotseling uit het fesh-fesh opduikt, net op tijd ontwijkt. Bij de trucks hakken de dagen er ook in. Door de late starttijden van de trucks (de eerste start is om 14.32 uur) zullen veel teams pas in het donker aankomen. Aart Schoones is dat bespaard gebleven. Maar veel anderen moeten in het donker rijden en navigeren. Maurik van den Heuvel mag ondanks zijn vertraging van de vorige dag toch starten met zijn Dakar Speed-truck. Zijn monteurs hebben de hele nacht doorgewerkt om een technisch probleem op te lossen. Dat blijkt uiteindelijk een simpel defect aan een kabeltje te zijn. Eenmaal ontdekt is het euvel snel verholpen. Toch blijft het spannend of zij ook morgen nog mogen starten. De vertraging van gisteren is zo groot dat de ASO kan besluiten om het team alsnog te diskwalificeren. The trucks start late (the first one at 14:32) and that means that many of the trucks will not arrive at the finish until dark. This is tough after so many tough days in the rally. Aart Schoones is lucky he arrives in daylight, but many of the others have to navigate and drive at night. Despite the time loss in the previous stage, Maurik van den Heuvel is allowed to start in his Dakar Speed truck. His mechanics worked all night frantically trying to find the problem that slowed him down yesterday. Finally they found the defect in a small cable, but it is still unclear if they may start tomorrow. The delay was so big that the ASO could still decide to disqualify the team.

‘Waar de woestijn in de zee eindigt’ is een veelgebruikte omschrijving van Antofagasta, een van de mooiste steden in Chili. De zee, woestijn en bergketen dragen bij aan een bijzondere schoonheid, ongewoon voor een grote stad. Langs de kust van de Stille Oceaan trekt de Dakarkaravaan verder naar Iquique, waar voor het eerst een podium is opgesteld. Een podium ter ere van de rijders die op de helft van de rally nog steeds in de race zijn. Voor de motorrijders zal de etappe iets langer zijn. Zij zullen een soort enduro parcours afleggen over bergkammen met prachtige uitzichten op de zee. Samen met de andere deelnemers moeten zij vervolgens de duinen langs dit deel van de Chileense kust trotseren.

The saying “where the dessert ends and the sea begins” is commonly used to describe Antofagasta. One of the prettiest cities in Chile. The sea, dessert and mountains all create a special beauty, unusual for such a large city. The Dakar caravan follows the coast of the Pacific Ocean North to Iquique, where a podium has been built for the first time ever. A podium to honor the competitors that are still in the race at this halfway point. The stage will be slightly longer for the motorcyclists. They will complete an endurance-type terrain over mountain ridges with beautiful views of the ocean. All the competitors will then have to conquer the dunes that dominate this part of the Chilean coastline. For the bikes and quads this is the challenge before the rest day. A huge crowd of Dakar fans are waiting for them in Iquique, a well-earned reception for the brave riders. 127

Het was een spannende eerste week met vijf winnaars in zes etappes. Velen zullen de loodzware tweede etappe niet snel vergeten, waarin zij vaak tot het uiterste moesten gaan. Toby Price just misses the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s victory again. Helder Rodrigues shows himself for the first time this Dakar. He is slightly faster than Price. The Australian misses a waypoint and has to go back. Despite this small setback he is satisfied with his first Dakar so far. Hans Vogels finishes the stage in twentieth position, 26 minutes behind leader Rodigues. The first part of the Dakar is completed for the motorcyclist. An exciting week with 5 winners in six stages. Many will not forget the extremely challenging second stage, a stage that was tough on all of them.

Nassar Al-Attiyah is niet alleen tevreden met de eerste plaats in het algemeen klassement. Hij is ook op jacht naar dagzeges en zet in Iquique de derde etappe op zijn naam. Het ging echter niet vanzelf; Giniel de Villiers en Robby Gordon maakten het hem zwaar. Zij eindigden op een respectievelijke tweede en vierde plaats. Ten Brinke en Van Loon strijden voor een toptiennotering en behalen uiteindelijk een zesde en negende plaats. Bij de trucks is Nikolaev met zijn Kamaz oppermachtig; hij heeft al vier van de zes dagzeges op zijn naam gezet. Het Kamaz-team eist ook de tweede en derde plaats op. Ton van Genugten rijdt een constante rally en weet de dag op de veertiende plek af te sluiten, met Jos Smink in zijn kielzog, ĂŠĂŠn plaats achter hem. Hoewel Pascal de Baar van het Mammoet Rallysport-team eindelijk van zijn pechvogel verlost lijkt te zijn, moet hij nu teamgenoot Martin van de Brink assistentie verlenen die vlak voor de finish stil komt te staan.

Nassar Al Attiyah is not just content with his first place in the overall ranking. He is also pushing to be stage winner every day. In Iquique he is successful for the third time and wins todays stage. It was not easy for him. Giniel de Villiers and Robby Gordon put up a good fight and made it tough for him, they finished in second and fourth place. Ten Brinke and van Loon are fighting for a top ten position and finish in sixth and ninth position respectively. Nikolaev is unbeatable in his Kamaz, he has won four out of the six stages. The second and third position also go to Kamaz today. Ton van Genugten is driving steadily he closes today in fourteenth position. Jos Smink follows just one place behind him. Pascal de Baar of the Mammoet team seems to have put his string of bad luck behind him, but now he has to assist his team mate Martin van de brink who breaks down just before the finish.

Dit is de eerste dag van de Boliviaanse marathonetappe; een doolhof op hoog niveau. De wedstrijdrijders vertrekken vroeg uit de Chileense kustplaats Iquique voor de verbindingsroute. Een paar honderd kilometer en een grensovergang verder komen de coureurs op een hoogte van 3.500 meter. Hier is het ademen zwaar. Eenmaal gearriveerd op het Boliviaanse plateau kan de race beginnen. Aan de start van de special stage toont Bolivia haar kleuren op zijn mooist. Daarna volgen de vele off road wegen met talrijke kruisingen. Die maken van dit parcours een doolhof waarin het gemakkelijk verdwalen is.. The first day of the Bolivian marathon stage; a high altitude labyrinth. The competitors leave the coastal town of Iquique early for the liaison. After nearly four hundred kilometres and a border post the drivers reach an altitude of 3.500 meters. Breathing is heavy here. Once they have arrived at the Bolivian plateau the race can begin. Bolivia really shows off its colours at the start of the special stage. Many small roads with numerous junctions follow, making a real labyrinth out of the route, getting lost is easy.

Voor de trucks staat de komende twee dagen een marathonetappe op het menu. Meer dan 330 kilometer duinen zullen een beproeving zijn voor de rijders en hun trucks. â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Avonds zijn ze op zichzelf aangewezen. Het zijn vooral de technische mannen aan boord van de trucks die het verschil zullen maken. Hans Stacey heeft het helemaal naar zijn zin: de nacht doorbrengen in een tent in de woestijn en op jezelf aangewezen zijn; dat is voor hem echt Dakar.

Wie ooit over een zoutvlakte heeft gereden weet wat voor ervaring dat is. Een unieke belevenis! Op topsnelheid over deze vlakte rijden is spectaculair, maar ook verraderlijk. En vandaag speelt de natuur een extra grote rol in de oversteek van honderd kilometer naar de andere kant van het zoutmeer. Het is koud en het regent. Zodoende ligt er op het zout een laag water, waardoor er een spray opspat achter de motorbanden. De stad Iquique is dit jaar gastheer voor maar liefst twee rustdagen. Verder wordt de route vanaf vandaag gesplitst in een aantal stages. De motoren en de quads krijgen eerst een rustdag en gaan dan het Andesgebergte over naar het zoutmeer van Uyuni. Dat zijn twee etappes zonder ondersteuning van hun teams. Voor de auto’s is er eerst de marathonetappe naar Bolivia, waarna ze terugkomen voor hun rustdag. Later zal blijken dat dit een ware aanslag op het materieel is, vooral bij de motoren. De trucks zullen de zelfde dag als de auto’s vertrekken voor een marathon stage naar Iquique. Op de rustdag is er tijd om naar huis te bellen, ook voor Adwin Hoondert. ‘Het was toch wel een heftige week; in geen enkele etappe hebben we iets cadeau gekregen.’ En hij was niet de enige die er zo over dacht. Jurgen van den Goorbergh: ‘Ik zit er helemaal doorheen, dus ik kan wel een rustdag gebruiken.’ The city of Iquique is the venue for two rest days this year. There are also some stages that will start in Iquique and will take separate routes per category. The motorcyclist and the quads begin with a restday and then they will cross the Andes to the salt lake of Uyuni. This will be a marathon stage of two days without any support from their teams. The cars will complete the same marathon stage to Bolivia a day earlier. Most competitors will find out that this will be tough on the vehicles, especially for the motorbikes. The trucks will leave the same day as the cars and compete in a marathon stage in the dunes around Iquique. The rest days provides time for the competitors to summarize the first half of the rally. Adwin Hoondert recaps: “It was a tough week, we had to fight the whole way”. He was not the only one to feel like this. Jurgen van den Goorbergh is more outspoken: “I am completely wrecked, I need a rest day”.

De manschappen in het truckklassement horen deze morgen bij het wakker worden niet de gebruikelijke geluiden van het reguliere bivak. Na een nacht in het marathonbivak maken ze zich op voor weer een dag in de duinen met heel veel zand. De tracks zitten vol met kuilen; het komt vandaag op techniek en uithoudingsvermogen aan. In Iquique eindigt de etappe op traditionele wijze. De routes voor de auto’s en de trucks komen samen bij de 1.500 meter lange afdaling van het ‘Dune d’Iquique’. Met weerzinwekkende snelheden dalen de coureurs af naar zeeniveau, luid toegejuicht door het massaal aanwezige publiek. Ondertussen zorgt het slechte weer in Bolivia voor modderige omstandigheden en de etappe voor de auto’s wordt ingekort. Desondanks brengt het oversteken van het zoutmeer van Uyuni spektakel. Yazeed Al Rajhi pakt de eerste dagzege voor Toyota. Erik van Loon rijdt een prima race en eindigt op een twaalfde plaats. Hij nadert Bernhard ten Brinke in het algemeen klassement. Die verliest door een hydraulisch lek veel tijd en moet de etappe zonder stuurbekrachtiging uitrijden. Vol trots laat de zeer constant rijdende Fernando Ferrand (senior) een filmpje zien waarop deze vaderzoon-equipe uit Peru met hun Volkswagen Amarok een hoogste snelheid klokt van 163 kilometer per uur.

The contestants in the truck category are not woken up by the usual noises of the bivouac this morning. After spending the night in the marathon bivouac they prepare for another day full of dunes and a lot more sand. The tracks are full of potholes, technique and perseverance will be key today. In Iquique the stage ends in a traditional way. The routes for the cars and trucks will join for the 1.500 meter long descent of the “Dune d’Iquique”. The gathered crowd cheers the drivers on as they drive down the dune and cross the finish at sea-level. The bad weather in Bolivia creates difficult muddy conditions for the drivers and the stage has to be shortened. Despite the shortening of the route, the crossing of the Salt lake of Uyuni is still very spectacular and Yazeed Al Rajhi wins the first daily victory for Toyota. Erik van Loon does very well and ends in twelfth position. He is closing the gap to Bernard ten Brinke in the overall ranking. Ten Brinke suffers a hydraulic leak and has to complete the stage without power steering. The constant performing Fernando Ferrand (Sr,) proudly shows a video film. The video shows how the father and son team form Peru reach 163km/h as they descend the dune in their Volkswagen Amarok. 181

Ton van Genugten komt vlak voor de afdaling zonder diesel te staan. Hij stapt uit en ziet tot zijn verbazing dat zijn truck zonder hem aan de afdaling begint. Snel ingrijpen van monteur Eric van Gemert brengt de truck tot stilstand. Ton stapt direct in en bedwingt zonder motor de afdaling. Helaas stopt de truck er honderd meter voor de finish alsnog mee, dankzij het mulle zand. Navigator Anton van Limpt rent naar de finish om de laatste stempel van de dag in de wacht te slepen. Snel haalt iemand in het naastgelegen bivak wat diesel, zodat de truck uiteindelijk al rijdend de finish passeert. Ton van Genugten runs out of diesel just before the descent. He gets out of the truck, only to see it start to run down the dune without him. Eric van Gemert, his mechanic acts fast and manages to stop the truck. Ton can get in and drive down without an engine, all goes well until the truck grinds to a standstill 100 meters before the finish in the soft sand. Navigator Anton van Limpt gets out and runs to the finish for the last stamp of the day. The much needed fuel is quickly picked up from the neighbouring bivouac and the truck crosses the finish line on its own engine power.

De laatste etappe in de Chileense Atacama woestijn is een feit. De lange terugreis naar ArgentiniĂŤ, waar de finish in Buenos Aires wacht, is gestart. Alle deelnemers volgen dezelfde route, die begint met ongeveer vijftig kilometer in mul duinzand. Daarna komt het op ervaring en stuurmanskunst aan. De smalle paden met diepe kuilen en verraderlijke bulten zullen uiterste concentratie vragen. Op deze slechte paden van fesh-fesh zullen de voertuigen de nodige krassen en beschadigingen oplopen door de vele grote keien. This is the last stage in the Chilean Atacama desert. The route back to the finish in Buenos Aires has started. All the contestants follow the same route, which starts with about 50 kilometres of soft dune sand. After that experience and driving skills will make the difference. The narrow tracks with deep potholes and hidden bumps will require full concentration. The bad roads with lots of fesh-fesh and hidden stones will be harsh on the vehicles bodywork.

Daarmee eindigen vier Honda’s in de top vijf. Hans Vogels raakt samen met Xavier de Soultrait door een navigatiefout van de route en verliest veel tijd. Ook Fans Verhoeven verliest vandaag tijd en finisht als 35ste. Voor Henno van Bergeijk stopt Le Dakar vandaag. Het lukt hem niet meer om aan de start te verschijnen wegens technisch problemen.

The HRC riders Joan Barreda Bort and Javier Pizzilito take forth hand fifth position, putting four Honda’s in the top five. Hans Vogels and Xavier de Soultrait make a navigation mistake and lose a lot of time. Frans Verhoeven also loses time today and ends in thirtyfifth position. The Dakar ends for Henno van Bergeijk, he does not make it to the start due to technical problems.

The victory in the truck category goes to Kamaz again. Nikolaev started the stage fast, but had to let Mardeev pass after he broke down. The Ivecoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s can keep up the pace today. Gerard secures third position. Hans Stacey takes the sixth position just in front of Martin Kolomy in his Tatra Buggyra. Pep Vila in the Iveco fast assistance truck finishes in a respectable sixteenth position, however he also missed a waypoint and his ranking is corrected to twenty fifth position.

The motorcyclist experience a very tough time during the nearly 400km long liaison to the start of the special stage. As they cross the Andes on the way to the border the icy temperatures are too much for some of them. They have to be treated for hypothermia along the road side.

They cannot enjoy the fantastic views the Andes has to offer. In temperatures of five degrees Celsius under zero flamingos stand in the lakes that are partially covered in a thin layer of ice. The motorcyclist are on their own again for the next two days. The second marathon stage starts on the Salinas Grandes at an altitude of 3.600 meters. The riders do not experience the bad weather in Salta as they are still completing the last kilometres. Joan Barreda Bort beats Marc Coma to the finish line. Hans Vogels finishes in tenth place and boxrider Jurgen van de Goorbergh does well finishing in 32nd position.

Het De Rooy-team kan ook vandaag het tempo van Kamaz niet bijhouden. Gerard was absoluut van plan de winst van deze etappe op zijn naam te zetten, maar hij moest genoegen nemen met een vijfde plaats. Hans Stacey eindigt vlak achter hem als zesde. Dat brengt Stacey steeds dichter bij de vijfde plaats in het algemeen klassement. De Dakar zou de Dakar niet zijn als hij niet tot op het laatste moment onvoorspelbaar was. Deze etappe voert de rijders over landbouwweggetjes door het Argentijnse platteland. Snelle rechte stukken worden afgewisseld met haakse bochten. Maar door felle regen worden de stoffige paden vandaag ook nog eens ĂŠĂŠn grote glijbaan. De tracks worden onbegaanbaar en de organisatie neutraliseert de wedstrijd voor de motoren

en quads na 107 kilometer. Voor de autoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s en de trucks wordt deze laatste beproeving al bij CP1 op 34 kilometer geneutraliseerd. Door de neutralisatie is de etappe te kort om nog voor veranderingen in het algemeen klassement te zorgen. Toch is er veel voldoening en emotie als de deelnemers de laatste eindstreep van deze monsterrally passeren. Het is nu echt voorbij en ze hebben het gehaald!

The Dakar would not be the Dakar if it did not have surprises right up to the finish. The stage will take the contestants over farm tracks located in the Argentinian country side. Fast straight stretches that end in sharp ninety degree turns. A downpour turns the dusty roads into a huge skating rink. The tracks become very dangerous and the organization neutralizes the race for the motorcyclists and quads after 107 kilometres. For the cars and

trucks this final challenge is neutralized at CP1 after 34 kilometres. The neutralization makes the stage too short to influence the leader board. Despite this there is great satisfaction and emotion as the competitors cross the last and final finish of this monster rally. It is really over now, they made it!

Het venijn zit in de staart voor kistrijder Jurgen van den Goorbergh, die in zijn klasse op een mooie tweede plaats eindigt. Op vijfhonderd meter voor de neutralisatie gaat hij nog zachtjes onderuit, vol in de modder. Als hij dan uiteindelijk de finish passeert, komen alle emoties eruit: ‘Wat een rollercoaster!’ De beste prestatie van een Nederlandse equipe bij de auto’s heeft de afgelopen 26 jaar op naam gestaan van Kees en Mieke Tijsterman. Zij werden in 1989 vijfde in het algemeen klassement. Met hun vierde plaats dit jaar streven Erik van Loon en Wouter Rosegaar deze prachtige prestatie voorbij. Robby Gordon zet deze laatste etappe op zijn naam. De man uit Arizona kan er niet genoeg van krijgen en beloont het publiek, dat de regen aan de finish getrotseerd heeft, met een spectaculair extra rondje.

The sting is in the tail for boxrider Jurgen van den Goorbergh, who finishes in a beautiful second place in his category. He falls down in the mud just 500m before the neutralization. When he finally crosses the finish of the stage all his emotion is released: “What a rollercoaster”! The best results ever for a Dutch car team in Le Dakar was set by Kees and Mieke Tijsterman 26 years ago. They finished fifth in the overall ranking. Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar beat this great record by finishing fourth in this year’s rally. Robby Gordon wins the last stage, the driver from Arizona, USA, never seems to get enough. He rewards the public that braved the rain with a spectacular encore.

Bij de Trucks heeft het Kamazteam de touwtjes in handen. De drie podiumplaatsen zijn voor Airat Mardeev, Eduard Nikolaev en Andrey Karginnov. De 28-jarige Mardeev haalt hiermee zijn eerste Dakaroverwinning binnen. Ales Loprais voorkomt met zijn Veka MAN nog net dat Kamaz de eerste vier plaatsen inneemt. Hans Stacey doet aan het einde van de rally nog goede zaken. Na de elfde en de twaalfde etappe, wint hij ook deze dertiende. Hij eindigt daarmee als beste Nederlander op de zesde plaats in het algemeen klassement. De man uit Best vertelt enthousiast aan de finish hoe hij heeft genoten van deze laatste stage. ‘Wat was het glad! Het was wel oppassen, want ze lagen aan alle kanten naast de piste. Maar wat was het geweldig. Ik heb echt genoten!’ De tiende plaats is voor Marcel van Vliet met zijn rode MAN. Hij rijdt dit jaar zijn tiende, maar ook zijn laatste Dakar Rally. Drie keer zat hij vlak bij een etappeoverwinning, maar drie keer was Hans Stacey hem net te snel af. De meeste andere dagen was de sympathieke truckhandelaar uit Dubai achter in de top tien te vinden. Jos Smink en Ton van Genugten vochten om de elfde plek. TonTrans Dakar won als amateurteam. Smink moest achter Van Genugten aansluiten, maar was daarmee wel de beste Ginaf.

Kamaz is overpowering in the truck category. The three podium places are taken by Airat Mardeev, Eduard Nikolaev and Andrey Karginov. The twenty-eight year old Mardeev wins his first Dakar. Ales Loprias with his Veka MAN is the only person that stops Kamaz taking the first four positions. Towards the end of the rally Hans Stacey does really well. After winning the eleventh and the twelfth stage he also wins stage thirteen and finishes as best Dutch truck driver in sixth position in the overall ranking. The man from Best explains enthusiastically how much he enjoyed the last stage of the rally. “It was really slippy, we had to watch out, people where skidding of the track all over the place. But I really enjoyed it”. Tenth position is for Marcel van Vliet in his red MAN. This was his tenth but also last Dakar. In three occasions he was close to winning a stage, but each time Hans Stacey was a fraction faster. Throughout the rest of the rally the sympathetic truck dealer from Dubai ended high up in the top ten. Jos Smink and Ton van Genugten fought for the eleventh position. Smink had to accept that the honour went to Van Genugten, but he did finish as best Ginaf.

Bijna de helft van de gestarte deelnemers is uitgevallen tijdens de slopende race van de afgelopen twee weken. De Dakar Rally uitrijden is niet vanzelfsprekend. De 216 overgebleven wedstrijdrijders rijden vandaag dan ook in een uitbundige feeststemming over de finish het podium op. De coureurs van 79 motoren, 18 quads, 68 auto’s en 51 trucks wanen zich allemaal winnaars van deze rally, al zijn er maar vier echt nummer één in hun klasse geworden. Marc Coma wint Le Dakar dit jaar voor de vijfde keer. Natuurlijk is ook alle aandacht voor Nasser Al-Attiyah die de laatste week domineerde en daarmee voor de tweede keer de Dakar wint. Nearly half of the competitors retired during gruelling race that lasted two weeks. It is therefore understandable that there is a great atmosphere when the survivors eventually take place on the finish podium. The 79 motorcyclist, 18 quad riders, 68 cars and 51 trucks all feel that they have won the rally. Only four actually took first place in their class. Marc Coma secured his fifth Dakar victory. Nasser Al-Attiayah dominated the rally from day one and took first position in the car class. 232
