Enjoy! plans a long run Despite the odds, Enjoy! says it’s got the key ingredients to success by Stacey Ackerman SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE
Enjoy! Restaurant is an upscale American restaurant with Italian inspiration located behind Shops on Galaxie. The restaurant was part of a master plan by the city to develop an urban area. The Shops on Galaxie opened in 2006 with a mix of eclectic stores including The Green Jungle, Luxury Sweets and Jan’s Brown Bag Deli, none of which is open today. Despite the Shops on Galaxie’s high turnover and vacancy rate, Enjoy!, which opened in 2004, is here to stay, its management insists. Rumors of the restaurants closing, which have circulated for three years, are false, according to general manager Julio Pitre. The restaurant is still owned by the founders, Dan and Kay Shimek. It is operated by Morrissey Hospitality Companies, which also manages numerous urban upscale restaurants, including St. Paul Grill, Saint Paul Hotel, Pazzaluna, Tria, Restaurant Max and Hotel Minneapolis. Copper Bleu, which was its biggest competitor, closed after only a few years in 2007. Pitre says the closing of Copper Bleu was due to its inconsistent hours. Customers didn’t know when it was going to be open, so they quit coming. Pitre also feels that the development’s location at Dodd and Cedar in Lakeville was too far south for an upscale restaurant. opened in the old copper dome building. One of the secrets to longevity for Enjoy! is its customer base. “We have loyal guests and relationships that we built over the years. We see a lot of the same people. Fifty percent of our Sunday brunches are people that are coming back, Pitre said. While its guests are loyal, empty retail doesn’t help any of the businesses in the area. “The development has been kind of slow, Pitre said. “There is a vacant lot
