Tough economy good for college enrollment Community and technical schools are experiencing a boom in job-skills training by Jessica Harper DAKOTA COUNTY TRIBUNE

College enrollment has risen over the years and some speculate it is due, in part, to displaced workers returning to school. “Many folks thought they didn’t need an education ... Then the rug was pulled right out from under them, and they find themselves looking for a new career after 25 years in the field, said Scott Gunderson, chair of the business and management department at Dakota County Technical College. Gunderson said he has seen a “huge influx in enrollment in the last year due to layoffs. Enrollment in DCTC’s business school in Apple Valley increased by about 20 percent between the fall of 2008 and the fall of 2009, he said. The program, which was launched in 2003, consists of an array of business degrees such as marketing, entrepreneurship, business management, among others. DCTC also offers independent study opportunities in which career experience can transfer into credits for individuals who are age 25 and older. Enrollment, in general, at DCTC increased from 2,104 students in the fall of 2008 to 2,206 students in the fall of 2009. Although DCTC does not track how many of these students are returning from the workforce, Gunderson said that anecdotally he is seeing more displaced workers return to school. As its enrollment grows, the vo-

cational school is looking at potentially expanding its Apple Valley site, Gunderson said. Inver Hills Community College also has seen an influx in enrollment. In the fall of 2008, the community college had 5,607 students. This increased to 6,210 by the fall of 2009. Like DCTC, Inver Hills does not track how many of these students are returning from the workforce, but Peter Hoch, director of business development, said he is seeing more displaced workers return to school. Rassmussen College in Eagan is seeing similar trends. Enrollment at the private school has increased from 500 students the fall of 2008 to 900 students the fall of 2009. Rassmussen, which offers associate and bachelors degrees has seen an increase in students returning from the workforce. But that is to be expected since that college is tailored to people returning from the workforce, said Antar Salim, business program coordinator at Rassmussen College in Eagan. The local community colleges are in sync with statewide trends. Enrollment in colleges and universities statewide has increased 19.9 percent between the fall of 2004 and the fall of 2008, according to the Minnesota Office of Higher Educa-

There are many reasons people return to school: a mom returning to work after a divorce, a veteran who feels a new career would be better than another deployment in Iraq or a mortgage-industry worker displaced by the housing bust. They are part of a new boom in college and vocational school enrollment. See Stories, Page 2A
