Tim Pawlenty, the presidential candidate, doesn’t square with Tim Pawlenty, the boy from South St. Paul. LARRY 4A WERNER FORUM

No, I don’t work at a coffee shop — I work in one (actually, several). As an online instructor, book author, freelance writer and mother of three young children, I need to find an office, but my home is more of a calamity of Dora the Explorer, Matchbox cars and bouncy balls than it is a soothing place to think. Because of my very limited time to “office when a babysitter comes or my husband is home, I’ve explored the best coffee shops in Dakota County for logging some productive time. I’ve found which ones are quietest, most friendly and have the best hours. Here are my top picks:

This female-owned business gives me a very feminine vibe. It’s tastefully-decorated and is filled with women’s groups. The jewelry for sale is very chic and reasonably-priced, though sometimes a distraction from my productive time. The owners always greet me by name. The tables are comfortable, and the lighting is good with track lights on the ceiling
and there’s a three-pronged lamp, which I usually pull by my table. The coffee is a bit pricey, but very good. The food has a lot of healthy options, which helps in my weight-loss efforts. I usually get a turkey sandwich with a side salad and a pickle. Since it offers both wine and coffee, it is open late. This is great for me, since I usually work on Sunday nights. It can get a little noisy at times, especially when a lot of groups are meeting. Overall, Jo Jo’s offers great company, ambience and hours, and I get a lot of work done when I go there.

Brad Feneller and Allison Wenino of Burnsville Young Life talk about the group’s past projects at Jo Jo’s Rise & Wine in Burnsville.
It seems like everyone goes to Panera. There are retirees, children and business people, so the people-watching is second-to-none. The food is expensive for cafÊ food, but it tastes great. There are a lot of healthy choices, including salads and smoothies. Plus, there are free refills on the coffee — I’ve been known to put back a cup (or six) during a day’s work. I wrote most of a book I published recently at this location and found it to be bustling, but I was able to tune out the action and focus on my writing. It is open until 9 p.m. on weeknights, later than a lot of other coffee shops. It’s conveniently located by Target, which is open until 11 p.m., so I can even pick up a few essentials kid-free on my way home. The fireplace is great on cold days, but the biggest obstacle is finding a power outlet — many tables don’t have outlets nearby.
Momentum to change aspects of No Child Left Behind law is coming from both Democrats and Republicans. JOE 4A NATHAN
