Farmington City Council approved the dredging of two stormwater ponds during Monday’s meeting. The goal is to both increase the volume of water in the ponds by more than 100,000 gallons each as

In 2012, the City Council and staff requested a survey of the city’s ponds to see if any needed to be cleaned out. The city has requirements for how much stormwater runoff can enter the Vermillion River. The test results for the two ponds showed that the sediment could be cleaned out using conventional methods. The worry was that it might have coal tar sealant, but City Engineer Kevin Schorzman said “fortunately it was free, making the costs much lower.

However, both ponds are either near farms or the drainage is from the backyards of residential neighborhoods. “I would think you would have a higher risk of running into that in an area of higher residential, Schorzman said. Farmington has more than 120 ponds in the community and Schorzman indicated that more dredging is in the city’s future. Bids will go out on Oct. 14. The approximate cost is about $95,000. Schorzman said.

When residents enter the voting booth on Nov. 4, residents will have two choices for Dakota County sheriff. Current Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows is not seeking re-election. When the filing closed last May, Herb Kotek and Tim Leslie both had entered the race. Leslie is actively campaigning while the campaign website Kotek listed at the Minnesota secretary of state’s website, www. koteksheriffdakota.com, is inactive. Attempts were made to contact Kotek with the number listed on the secretary of state website and his number listed phone book, but they were both disconnected. Kotek ran for sheriff in Steele County in 2010. According to the Owatonna People’s Press, Kotek started as sheriff’s deputy in Goodhue County and served as a police officer in Lonsdale and Owatonna. He also spent time as a Dakota County sheriff’s deputy. He lost his bid for Steele County sheriff, gaining about 1 percent of the total votes cast. Leslie, the current Dakota County chief deputy, has the endorsements of current Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows, Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom and several other police chiefs within the county. His website is at www. timleslieforsheriff.com.

In 2007, Flint Hills Resources donated this 57.62-acre land to the city with the stipulation that it would be used for recreational purposes. In 2013, the first phase of the development of the site began with the construction of three full-size soccer and lacrosse fields and the associated parking lot. The three fields are located in a dip in the land, surrounded by farm fields east of Akron Avenue on Bonaire Path.
