Do Your Homework Have you ever been in a conversation that seems to revolve entirely around the other person? Try as you might, somehow the “gravity” of every story seems to pull towards the other party. When I am in these types of conversations I struggle to feel any connection. It’s as if I’m a spectator and the conversation will go on with or without my participation.

When you are trying to build a relationship, the most obvious way to avoid making the other party feel this way is to ask questions – lots of them. After all, not only do you learn about their situation, you also make them the most important participant in the conversation. But there is another way to ensure that they feel valuable: do some homework before you meet with them.
